1.0 OBJECTIVE
This assignment is given based on the following objectives:
To encourage the students to explore through literature search from various
sources (primary or secondary data) on the topic given.
To help the students to appreciate the theoretical aspects which have been
discussed and delivered in the classes and analysing its application in the
construction industry.
To encourage students to carry out the task on a systematic research based
approach.
To evaluate the understanding of the students through the task submitted.
2.0 TASK
You are assigned to propose the scope in relation to the topic given. A brief description
and synopsis on each of the topics is given as a guide. Those areas which are not
mentioned but are related to Quantity Surveying profession are highly encouraged to be
addressed. Your assignment should complete with relevant case studies (local &
international), related sketches, photos and drawings. In addition, you have to scrutinize
the case studies, cost involved and the problem encountered by the
developer/consultants/contractor.

2. 3.0 TOPIC
Alteration and demolition works: The scope may include partial or total
demolition. There are various techniques; analysing its application on relevant
projects; however the suitability will depend on various factors. Preparatory
works before and during demolition works commenced are some of the critical
areas to be well addressed. An interview or observation amongst those involved
to the nature of work is the value adds in exploring the scenario.
Scaffolding: The scope may include the various types of scaffolds, its
application and suitability in projects. Safety measures during installation and
dismantling is very important to ensure its functionality. Is there any guideline on
the safety measure that the industry had the scaffolding also is a factor of
important that had tarnish the image of the construction industry recently.
Shoring: Consider as a temporary works in most cases. The types vary and the
choice is dependent on the purpose of the shoring itself. Widely used at projects
sites. An analysis through observation and snap shot photographs will highlight
its usage.
Underpinning: The objective is to transfer the load carried by an existing
foundation from the present bearing level to a new at a lower depth. Can be used
to replace a weak foundation but there are other reasons that alludes for
underpinning. An exploration on those reasons will expose further on the
activities involved during underpinning.
Steel structure: For a multi-storey project, the structural frame can be made
from steel, in-situ concrete or pre-cast concrete. Comparing the choice between
each structural frame based on the principal factors considered in their selection
will highlight the difference. The subject of fire in multi-storey building has
received considerable attention in recent years. Identifying a wide variety of
products and methods available to protect structural steelwork will be a value
adds in the understanding structural steelwork.
Long span roof: The scope covers for roof where the span exceeds 12.0m in
length. The material used can either be timber or steel. An analysis on its
application particularly in commercial and industrial building will highlight its
features and connections points.
Wall cladding: Development of lifting devices-led to the technique of
constructing walls with large, light elements or claddings attached to the
structural frame. The system separates the finishing process from the basic
structure. Fixing technique vary according to the nature of the background
structure, the type of cladding system used. The system can be applied as the
works proceeds or after the completion of the structure.
Accommodation of services: The extensive use of services and equipment
required in many types of building necessitates its early consideration in housing
them both vertically and horizontally. Identifying the consideration factors on the
choice of methods for accommodating services in buildings will highlight the
2
3. difference. Adopting a case study on several common types of services found in
complex buildings will give an exposure on the method to house those services.
