Dan Gilbert Stuck Between Two Choices Analysis
Stuck Between Two Choices?
Stuck trying to decide between two choices? This article will help you out.
What Will Make You Happy?
Dan Gilbert, the author of Stumbling on Happiness, has a super popular Ted Talk, The Surprising
Science of Happiness.
I never liked it. Especially the term "synthetic happiness" because it sounded like we should never
try to be happy, but just accept things how they are, but I was missing the point.
The point was, that the path we choose in life (or the path forced on us) rewires our brains so that it
make us happy about it.
And that means even being wrongly convicted and being in jail for decades could be a "glorious
experience" for some people.
Thus, the only way to not be happy is to not chooose, to stay stuck where you are.
And that's where you are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A coin flip? No.
The top regret of many on their death bed is: I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself,
not the life others expected of me.
There is more to happiness than just synthesizing it. Even Dan Gilbert is very clear about this.
You can't desire two things equally, you desire one more than the other. But you are stuck because
the one true path you want to take takes courage.
Here is the truth not one else has the guts to tell you: there is only one path for you.
And of the "two" paths you have, one you are letting people decide your life for you, doing what
society wants. You are being dragged along, you are drifting.
Here is the thing, synthetic happiness only comes when a situation is forced on you or you choose
the situation you can't change later.
But neither is true when you're allowing yourself to be dragged along, as you can change the
situation anytime.
How to Take Action
And I bet your "second" path that you are afraid to take has to do with it being irreversible. You
want to keep your options open, but, as the science shows, that'll make you even more

Analysis Of Stumbling On Happiness By Daniel Gilbert
Known for his research on affective forecasting, the prediction of how the future can affect ones
emotional state, Daniel Gilbert, wrote a book explaining how people tend to have delusions of their
future which often misleads peoples' happiness. This Harvard college professor of psychology
published one of the best time selling books, Stumbling on Happiness, arguing that imagination is
what triggers peoples joy. As a social psychologist Gilbert wanted to understand what is it that truly
causes that feeling to come. People continue believing in beliefs that aren't necessary true simply
because people and society can't handle the truth. For instance, if you give up after a failure, you
will never reach your goals. In the final chapter of Stumbling on Happiness, Gilbert addresses how
people who only imagine what will make them happy in the future tend to make poor decisions. He
includes how "...a lot of the advice we receive from others is bad advice that we foolishly accept..."
while, "a lot of the advice we receive from others is good advice that we foolishly reject". ... Show

Throughout my years of growing up I have heard this saying many time and in many different ways.
I've heard from my parents, my family members, teachers, counselors, guest speaker, etc. But most
of the people I have heard from said it in a similar way which was, "with success comes failures".
While I was in middle even in high school my classes had numerous amounts of guest speakers
trying to persuade the kids to become successful in life and motivating us to never stop reaching for
our goals even though if you stumble during the process, you should never give up. Many people
have a mindset that causes them to believe that if you fail in something you will never be successful
but I believe that this is one of those false belief

Actually telling someone that things don't always turn out as planned is met with a defiant refusal to
admitting this notion. There is no diminishment in our personal attempts to stay on track when our
minds have been made up. The human desire to be in control is so powerful we refuse to even admit
to losing control. This way of thinking can ultimately blind the mind from accepting just how
unprepared we are to see the future we want, or think we do.

Stumbling on Happiness Essay
What is Happiness?
People travel through life with what seems like a single goal: to be happy. This may seem like a
selfish way to live, however this lone objective is the motivation behind nearly all actions. Even
seemingly selfless deeds make people feel better about themselves. That warm feeling experienced
while doing charitable acts can be described as happiness. But what is authentic happiness? There is
an endless possibility of answers to this question, and man seems to be always searching for the
solution. Although one may reach his or her goals, there is always still something one strives for in
order to be happy. In the book Stumbling on Happiness, Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert takes
the reader through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"When people find it easy to imagine an event, they overestimate the likelihood that it will actually
occur" (Gilbert, 2006, p.19.) Gilbert explains that this causes us to be overoptimistic about our
futures and thus changes what we do in order to be happy. Young people imagine traveling the
world, starting a successful business or becoming a star. Later on in one's life they may realize that
they do not have the funds to travel the world, the talent to become a star, or even the desire to start
their own business. Perhaps they come to the conclusion that they would be happier starting a family
or writing a book. Humans have an undeniable want to control. The reason somebody imagines the
future is so they can do something about it (Gilbert, 2006, p. 21.) We imagine a future better than
today so we can take the actions necessary to get to the better tomorrow. I imagined college being a
whole lot better than high school. The freedom and the separation from my parents was something I
wanted. So in order to get here I studied hard in high school, strove for a good ACT score, and
applied to universities. The actions I took in high school were in order to control the future. Gilbert
answers the question of "Why should we want to control our futures?" "It feels good to do so–
period. Impact is rewarding. Mattering makes us happy. The act of steering one's boat down the
river of time is a source of pleasure, regardless of one's port of call" (Gilbert,

Love After Love : Love After Love By Derek Wallcott
Love after Love
At a first glance, the title of the poem, "Love after Love", might appear to imitate another soppy
love poem written by another pretentious poet claiming to know yet another secret to a perfect love.
One could not be more wrong. Nor, would one know, at a glance, the impact Derek Wallcott's poem,
"Love After Love", has had on my life. An impact that would make all the difference, through all of
the trials and tribulations, seventeen–year–old me has endured so far. In a short fifteen lines, I have
relearned the everlasting importance of self–love and the transformative powers I hold within
myself. These lessons which I vowed, to never let myself, again, forget. As a thirteen–year–old girl,
thrust into the cruelest, most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As it is hard to feel happy for another, while jealous, it was nearly impossible for me to completely
love others without loving myself in return. I had become so familiar with the darkness that I
allowed to consume me after years of loathing everything I was, that I made sure to never let myself
become accustomed to that feeling ever again because I knew how hard it was to get out. In Italo
Calvino's essay, "Why Read the Classics?", he asserts that literature should help us "discover
something we have always known" (Calvino 3). Walcott takes that very much literally and demands
that we should rediscover our past selves and "peel our own image from the mirror" and "give our
heart back" to ourselves (Walcott). While most people believe that to be happy, we must remake
ourselves into an entirely different being, Walcott reminds us that we, in our innocence, were at one
point, the best self we could be. Our only task is to rediscover and retransition into that person we
once knew so well and loved so much. The world drills into our minds that we must be bigger,
stronger, faster, the most successful and the most self–sufficient in this competitive world. "Love
after Love" exudes the truth that even our incomplete, imperfect self's, are in fact, enough. I am
enough. These words have helped me focus on all of the many good qualities I already possess,
rather than the ones I don't. While it was a tough road to self– discovery, I believe in full faith, that

A Clean Well-Lighted Place Response
Response Paper #2 Wealth does not equate to happiness Elderly people may be thought of as
content, rich, or happy to see such a long life. This is true in some instances, but money does not
bring happiness to one's life. The joy of family friends and love is what brings true smiles to
someone's face. In "A Clean, Well–Lighted Place" by Ernest Hemingway the older gentleman is
depressed about life and likes to drink his sorrows away, although he is wealthy it does not make
him happy. Throughout this story the narrator depicts characterization the most in many instances,
through the older man and the waiters. By the man's actions, and also the younger waiters choice of
words. The theme is evident that if you are rich you will not always be happy with life, looking past
the wealth it is the small things in life everyone may take for granted. ... Show more content on

Drinking heavily until close and stumbling out alone every night. "Last week he tried to commit
suicide, one waiter said. Why? He was in despair. What about? Nothing. How do you know it was
nothing? He has plenty of money" (Hemingway). Missing his loved ones more than anything,
money is just a variable to him, meaningless, he wants back what he cannot have and that is his
beloved wife. Which is reasonable, losing a loved one is a tough pill to swallow for anyone, but
rising above the loss shows true character in one's self. He shows sadness even with money, through
his actions by drinking heavily. And by his thoughts, thinking it is ok to commit suicide over you not
being happy with one thing in life that is

Daniel Gilbert: A Brief Biography
Daniel Gilbert was born on November 5, 1957. Surprisingly, he didn't aspire to be a Psychologist. In
fact, when he dropped out of high school, at the age of 19, he wanted to become a Science Fiction
writer. After several years of hitchhiking across America Daniel decided to go to community college
and become a Science Fiction writer, but the only class left was Introduction to Psychology.
Subsequently, he went to the University of Colorado Denver where he received his BA in
Psychology in 1981. Daniel went on to get his PhD in Social Psychology from Princeton University
in 1985. After graduation Daniel taught Psychology at the University of Texas in Austin, until 1996.

An Analysis of 'The Pursuit of Happiness'
The Pursuit of Happyness Abstract Some of the most common themes in contemporary biographical
films revolve around social life as well as the accompanying problems that living in today's society
entails. By making connections to individual personal lives, these films help most people make
sense of the world in which they live. In this regard, this paper focuses on the film, The Pursuit of
Happyness outlining various cultural issues as well as problems faced by the starring; Will Smith
playing Chris Gardner in the movie. Moreover, the paper discusses how such factual films reflect
and create popular ideas about social problems. Introduction The Pursuit of Happyness is a factual
film based on Chris Gardner's near one–year struggle with homelessness, fatherhood, divorce and a
desire to achieve to fend for his son Christopher Junior. It is a story highlighting a man's ambition to
achieve his goals and find a way of caring for his son. Set in San Francisco, the film starts with
Gardner investing his life savings in Bone–Density scanners, a white elephant project which
financially breaks the family; his wife separates from him leaving him with the custody of their son
Christopher. Additional problems set in ranging from Gardner's eviction from his house,
garnishment of his bank account as well as his credit cards. In line with this, he is forced to live in
the streets but his meeting with Jay, the manager at Dean Witter places him on the path to success;

Stumbling On Happiness Summary
In Stumbling on Happiness, Daniel Gilbert explores the question of why humans fail to know what
will make them happy in the future. In chapter 5 Gilbert explains how we imagine in more detail for
the near future experiences rather than long term because out brains have a lot more filling in of
information to do; however I disagree. In terms of making plans 2 weeks in advance he might be
right, but in terms of the far future, for example 20 years, I feel as if I have many significant goals
and expectations that I see in my future, and I feel as if they are more thought out than my journey
to those goals or my actions in my near future. This may be because I am what one might consider a
"dreamer," but I feel as if I spend a lot of time thinking

The Myth of Money and Success and That of Gender Essay
The Myth of Money and Success and that of gender
"The world we see that seems so insane is the result of a belief system that is not working. To
perceive the world differently, we must be willing to change our belief system, let the past slip away,
expand our sense of now, and dissolve the fear in our minds" –William James, an American
philosopher and psychologist
For a long time, the popular myth of success and that of gender have shaped humans' minds and
behaviors in a certain way. They set up a certain behavior model and provide people with an
idealized reference for living their lives. However, people put too much emphasis on the bright side
of these two widespread but outdated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The world is filled with secret formulas for a successful life. The traditional American myth of
success is a conception marked by certain individuals and social–cultural conventions. It indicates
that honesty and hard work will bring people wealth and good reputation. Besides, on the path to
success, people are never constrained by their race, gender or low–income families and they are
offered equal chances.
Firstly, the notion of honesty and hard work leading to success is problematic and misleading. The
myth can be more reasonable if part of it can be broadened: the integrity of honesty, hard work, right
opportunities, and smart decisions will bring people success. One of the failures of the current myth
of success is the fact that, although it stays valid for a small group of people, it does not address the
realities of success for most of the population. There is a sizable number of people who are seldom
provided with equal opportunities and excluded from this myth. Those children who were born into
poor families are virtually stuck in the lower rungs of the economic and social ladder, in spite of
their good personality, hard work and great yearning they feel to succeed. In this case, a timely
opportunity and the ability to seize the opportunity become extremely important. In the article

Stumbling On Happiness Daniel Gilbert Summary
In chapter 6 of the book Stumbling on Happiness written by Daniel Gilbert, the author suggests that
when people imagine their future happiness, their current emotions or feelings affect them the most.
In chapter 6, the mechanism of how people imagine their future happiness is a problem that Daniel
Gilbert explains to the readers. The reason why Daniel Gilbert highlighted this problem is that
people typically think they will have the equal happiness in the presence and in the future.
According to Daniel Gilbert, people experience hard time to conjure completely different images of
tomorrow than today's(78). He depicts the future as a hole with no walls and the past as a wall with
some holes. In addition, Daniel Gilbert uses an example of people

Love For The First Time
When you fall in love for the first time you think you are high in the sky (and no, not in that way).
Everything is beautiful, colorful, and perfect; at least that's how I felt. When I had my first
boyfriend, I felt free and careless, There weren't bad days and I felt complete because he was by my
side. Finally, someone understood my bad jokes and weird sense of humor. It was the best time of
my life, and after a long time, I felt happy. I know it sounds cliché, but that's how stupidly happy
love can make you.
We have met for six years, he was in the same school as me and he later confesses to me 3 months
after our graduation. Well, I push him a little bit, because he was afraid that I would reject him or
that it would ruin our friendship, but I told him that I felt the same way, and since then we were
together for two years as an official couple.
Unfortunately, it didn't last long. He had a friend who spent a lot of time with him, and I guess that
little by little he started to get feelings for her, he did the right thing and told me about it before he
could cheat on me. We end up on good terms and till this day we talk to each other as good friends
because either way our relationship at that point (last few months) felt empty and it was like we got
bored of each other, we realized that what we felt was not love in a romantic way, but as friends. We
care for each other because we've known for six years. I had to admit that he hurt me at first and I
was blind with anger

How Does Nathaniel Hawthorne Present Pearl In The Scarlet...
In the Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays Pearl as a strong symbol. She is looked upon as
a breathing representation of Hester's sin, the Puritans see Pearl as a "devil child" that should not be
accepted, and she is a constant reminder to Hester of her transgression.
From the first moment Hawthorne introduces Pearl in The Scarlet Letter it is evident that Pearl is
looked at as a mistake. Hawthorne describes the newborn as the one, "whose innocent life has
sprung, by the inscrutable decree of Providence, a lovely and immortal flower, out of the rank
luxuriance of a guilty passion" (6.82). Pearl is a beautiful outcome from the act of adultery that will

because teaching was were her heart was at. Money did not matter to her, what did matter was her
happiness and the chance to do good in the world. She said that when she was younger she used to
have a giant chalkboard by her bed and she would lineup all her stuffed animals and dolls next to the

had two kids wasn't going to stop her from going back to school to get her Masters degree which she
eventually did. She also struggled to make ends meet when she worked at a grocery store bagging

Short Story Of My Story
My story begins in London, England. I have two parents who seem to form an oxymoron, because
even from a young age I could tell that they were the complete opposites from each other. I vividly
recall living with my school friend for around a week and wondering what I had done to deserve
such a fantastic vacation. When I was finally allowed to return to my parents, I did not return to the
apartment I was familiar with, but a duplex house with another family I had never met before. It was
much later in life, through discussion with my parents, that I learned that we were evicted. This kind
of financial struggle has followed me all throughout my life. There has only ever been enough
revenue to make sure our stomachs are full and to pay the bills. Afterwards, barely anything.
However, these struggles have taught me that money is not happiness. In my house, there was and
still is, consistent laughter. The oxymoron made it known that they loved me, no matter what the
circumstance may have been. They taught me that family is important; life is can never terrible
when family is there. I vowed that when I have my family, I would work as hard as I can to maintain
happiness at home because happiness is the greatest medicine, the healer of all ailments. My father's
"pie in the sky" has always been the United States. When the American Lottery finally fell in our
favor, he did whatever he could to make sure we could get on that plane heading to the Land of the

It is an exciting moment because it is one of the first times that Edna Pontellier, the protagonist,
feels giddy with herself and her accomplishments.
In the preceding passage, Edna Pontellier swims for the first time by herself. Much is symbolized
and foreshadowed in this passage. Throughout the summer, Edna's husband, Mr. Pontellier, and
many other people have been trying to teach her. However, Edna was never able to swim with the
help of others. The fact that she finally is able to swim unaided symbolizes Edna's awakening sense
of independence and self–reliance. The ocean parallels Edna's feelings. It is described with diction
such as "space and solitude", "vast expanse" and "unlimited." The words "significant import...given
her to control the working of her body and her soul" also support this. Edna realizes she is in control
of herself and can attain happiness by her own means. Similarly, the control Edna has over her body
suggests her awakening sense of sexuality. It is around the time of this swim that Edna acutely
develops feelings for Robert LeBrun.
The ocean that Edna swims in could also symbolize her awakening as a rebirth of herself. She is
described as a "tottering, stumbling, clutching child" when in the water. Throughout the novel, Edna
is often portrayed as a child. Rather than slowly easing into her independence at a rate that she could
handle and control, Edna seems to throw herself into it as a child

Mistakes In Bernard Malamud's The Natural
Mistakes are common enough that everybody in human history has suffered them – they may range
from the small–scale simple arithmetic errors on a test to the faux pas in a socialite dinner that can
cost a company a deal with a potential customer. While these faults are costly at first, learning from
them as to avoid foolishly repeating the past is a must. In the novel The Natural by Bernard
Malamud, the main character Roy Hobbs does not follow the aforementioned advice and echoes his
mistakes in both the two lives another character, Iris, mentions, who classifies the first to make
mistakes and the second one to learn from those mistakes and move on. While Roy's first life is

Voluntaryly Childless Couples
"Be fruitful and multiply," this is the word of the Lord. However, this is now being challenged by
some married couples as there is an increasing rate of married couples choosing to remain childless.
The traditional definition of a family is defined as a man and a woman living together with child
/children. However, a new family type has emerged, such as voluntary childless couples. In this
family type the couple is married and is fully capable of biological reproduction, but have no
intention of doing so. Thus, voluntary childlessness among a married couple exists for a number of
reasons: due to achieving a higher level of educational attainment, so as to pursue a higher standard
of living and fear that children will potentially cause an unhappy marriage. Because of achieving a
higher level of educational attainment, some married couples choose to remain childless. The
household childlessness rate is strongly linked to married couples with high educational level. For
example, the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicated that the proportion of couples aged 45–49
years who were childless increased with higher level of educational attainment. The statistics
highlighted that the highest proportion of childless married couples were among those with a
bachelor degree or higher (20%), compared with 12% of those with an undergraduate or associate
diploma. Couples with no post–school qualifications had the lowest level of childlessness (9%). It is
seen that the delaying of child

portentous dream the narrator has in the beginning of Invisible Man foreshadows his whole journey
throughout the book. In the his dream at the end of the first chapter, he finds an envelope in his
briefcase that says, "To Whom It May Concern, Keep this Nigger–Boy ... Show more content on

The briefcase holds the contents of the narrator's past; it haunts him and he cannot relieve himself of
it until the very end. When he is burning the contents he becomes a phoenix rising from the ashes to
a new life, a new journey. Within the briefcase is his high school diploma, the piece of paper with
his new identity on it that was given to him by the Brotherhood, Clifton's doll, the anonymous letter
from Jack. All of these things were a part of his old identities, always with him in that briefcase. In
Death of a Salesman, the diamonds are Willy's past and future, what could have been and what
could be. Ben tells Willy in one final scene, "'The jungle is dark but full of diamonds, Willy.' 'One
must go in to fetch a diamond out.' 'It's dark there, but full of diamonds'" (Miller 1993). Willy had
the opportunity to go with Ben to find real diamonds, real happiness. He missed his first chance and
instead he must now die to find the happiness, the diamond in the rough. The car is the way for
Willy to reach true happiness, no worries; a means of 'transportation' eventually to Willy's death.
Willy's life never amounted to anything much in the end and he needed to escape. The car is his
ferry to the afterlife, to his happiness. The first

Tock, A Short Story
Tick, Tock, chimes my life clock. The peal of every second's sound passing through my ears like the
background music from a movie on the big screen. Constant... white noise. As I sit back and recall
the situations I've encountered in this peculiar life of mine, I come to the realisation that my clock
has almost struck twelve. My time is almost up.
With a furrowed brow I examine further. How could this be? How could it have come so quickly?
The incessant noise of the hands mechanically moving across the white face became unbearable as it
raced through me. As if, it were a ticking time bomb. My whole life, measured in these twelve even
arcs has almost completed its full circle, and while most people feel the desire to run from these
clock hands ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So after long contemplation, I came to the conclusion that I was in charge of my happiness. That it
for me to decide when my life succumbed to darkness. And although I couldn't control the hands of
my clock reaching twelve, I could welcome them with content. And that's when I began to really
live.
What a strange thought... I was approaching the end of my life, and I had just began living? Like.
really living? People reading this must think I'm insane. But unlike most people, I don't consider
stumbling through life, merely existing, to be the purpose of life at all. The purpose of this beautiful
gift dwindles with every day, and so It should be embraced like a thirst that shall never be quenched.
Every night, when I lay my head on the pillow at day's end, I am already immersed by the hunger of
tomorrow's events.
I realised the happiness in six's midst wasn't really mine. It was the property of someone else's that I
leeched onto and stole from their vice grip. The sadness of one, which I held onto for most of my
life, although heartbreaking, was in the past. It sounds cliche but for most of my life, I didn't live in

The Pros And Cons Of Blue-Sky Research
By "blue–sky" research, Sir John Vane means researching and spending time partaking in activities
that a person is genuinely interested in, not wasting time on activities with a goal of reaching an
end–product or result. Rather than using research as a means of self indulgence, Sir John Vane uses
the notion of blue–sky research to instead participate in what one is interested in. Advantages to
blue–sky research include the development of Bayer aspirin and its' effects on society today.
Through genuine interest, Felix Hoffman was able to stumble upon the creation of aspirin,
something beneficial to millions today. Ian Frazier connects blue–sky research to playing in the
woods with an explanation of marginal activities. Marginal activities are activities that certain
members of society, depending on their place or age, participate in with genuine interest and
enjoyment. For example, an adult would not be seen playing in the woods, as opposed to a child.
Inversely, a child would not be seen studying about the stock exchange. With these supposed
cultural constructs, Ian Frazier reminisces about when he would play in the woods with genuine
interest and satisfaction. Ian Frazier's marginal activity connects to Sir John Vane's blue–sky
research through the fact that both include genuine, satisfying activities that enrich the community.
As explained in Sir John Vane's essay, "Blue–Sky Research," such research "[holds] great promise
for the community," helping reverse today's "urgency to show a return," (346). Because of Frazier's
enjoyment, playing in the woods was not a rushed activity, connecting to blue–sky research and
helping push Sir John Vane's philosophy.
I agree that without such research, society would indeed be poorer, as would be our health. Blue–sky
research is needed for the betterment of society today. Without a genuine interest or satisfaction in
an activity, one would not have a place or fit in society. Going to work somewhere dreadful may be
possible through the eyes of some, but those same people still go somewhere after work fueled with
enjoyment and genuine interest, ready to be partake in a hobby and start the highlight of the day.
The specific activity, however, is usually up to the person

Definition Of Jeffersonian Democracy
The dictionary definition of democracy reads, "a system of government by the whole population or
all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives (Merriam–Webster's
collegiate dictionary, 1999)." This definition, however central to our American Government, is fairly
vague, and as a result has been interpreted in thousands of ways. Each individual political leader has
had a unique personal definition of what democracy means, and how it can best be applied. The
definition presented in the Declaration of Independence comes from its author, Thomas Jefferson,
and is appropriately known as "Jeffersonian Democracy." Jeffersonian Democracy was the first
personalized form of democracy that our country experienced, though it is a form that has been
altered into extinction over the last (approximately) two hundred years. Despite being the primary
form of government represented in the Declaration of Independence, Jeffersonian democracy is a
form seldom applied in present–day America. The primary belief associated with Jeffersonian
democracy is of a small and efficient central government. It is fundamentally known that,
"Jefferson... felt that the central government should be rigorously frugal and simple. (Heller)" This
concept is the origin of Anti Federalist/Republican belief. It is also present in the writing of the
Declaration, specifically in the line, "... to secure these rights (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness),
governments are instituted among

Personal Narrative: Becoming Eighteen
Becoming eighteen does not make you an adult. It's not so much the number of years as it's the
taking on the responsibility that affects others. For my sister, it was the adoption of her chihuahua,
Ollie. My sister had had alcohol and pierced her ears by herself all things she thought would make
her an adult, yet this experience was different. It didn't just affect her it was another living thing.
Rather than her relying on someone else, she was going to have another rely on her. This adoption
would be a commitment that would last a lifetime.
It all started with my mom telling my sister about a dog in the local SPCA. My sister's dream dog, a
cute Yorkie. My sister was too late to adopt that dog, but this turned out for the better She spent
hours looking for a new dog that would fit our household. Finally, stumbling on a caramel colored
pooch. Immediately she sent me her discovery and asserted her determination to adopt him. The
following day she drove almost an hour to go pick him up. She spent that time contemplating the

Stumbling On Happiness Daniel Gilbert Summary
The article "Stumbling on Happiness" by Daniel Gilbert is an article mostly talking about our future
prediction, imagination, how surrogate is helping yourself to predict the future. This article mostly
based on surrogate and three shortcomings of imagination, and how surrogate is more reliable.
According to Gilberts, he is demonstrating that surrogate is a person who has knowledge or
experience about the things you want to know or experience. Surrogates also push us on making
improvement on our understanding of things we know. Gilbert also mentions information can spread
throughout to many people at the same time thanks to communication. Sometimes, information we
get from the surrogates can be true and also be false. Also, according to the reading, Gilbert ... Show

That person might change your view into positive way. For example, I and my cousin, who are both

his current life. Gilbert shares about two mistakes that people usually make when they ask people
for advice. The first one is that we accept the bad advice from the others. The second one is we do
not accept the good advice from the others. We can receive both good advice and bad advice.
Because of that, we need to analyze advice. Is it good to that advice? Will that advice help you or
harm you? Like I have mentioned at the beginning of the writing, Gilbert has mentioned three
shortcomings of imagination. The first shortcoming is that you can add or remove details in your
imagination, but you do not realize that something which important is missing from the imagination.
This means that when your imagination takes over the missing parts. In more details to this, if you
have not asked for advice from surrogate, your imagination will fill up the missing parts. This can
lead you into a wrong view about that

The Nature Of Happiness By Daniel Gilbert
You may have guessed Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert is all about what makes people
happy, how to make people happy, and why people feel happy in certain situations. This assumption
is correct, but Gilbert digs much deeper than these three simple questions. He discusses the nature of
happiness and explains the many, many psychological illusions that alter our perception of
happiness. Gilbert focuses on why happiness is so difficult to measure and why many people have
bias views regarding happiness. After reading this book, I feel as if I have a more insightful view
about the human mind and how it works. Personally, I think the following quote by Gilbert sums up
his book: "Our desire to control is so powerful, and the feeling ... Show more content on

Humans can imagine the future and make plans for later, whereas animals can only make
predictions about the immediate future. We often look forward in time to reduce the impact of
unpleasant situations and to try to control and change our future. Gilbert goes on to describe what
"happiness" is. He says happiness is a "subjective feeling", meaning it is impossible to compare two
different individuals' level of happiness at a given time. When humans try to compare happiness
they often compare their happiness in the present with something they experienced in the past.
Gilbert explains that even when our minds compare two different things in the present we still tend
to fail to notice differences. Everyone has a "blind spot of visual perception" that we fill in with
what we think should be there. Gilbert compares this to our memory. Humans only store facts and
feelings in our memory that we believe are important, so when we look back at a certain memory we
simply fill in the missing details. In one of the studies Gilbert discusses, he describes how this
"filling in" process happens when we imagine the future as well. Our brains fill in details about
future experiences, and we are unaware this process is happening. We don't notice the important
details we may be leaving out. Humans see things that are closer to them with more complexity than
those things that are far

Money: Power or Happiness?
Since the early years of America, the rich have been considered the most powerful. Poor people
were not considered very significant simply because they were unlike the rich. While wealth was
desirable it wasn't always worth having because money cannot buy happiness. F. Scott Fitzgerald's
The Great Gatsby reflexes this idea that money, although seen as power, cannot resemble happiness.
In the book, many of the characters think their lives are more significant because they are wealthy.
Daisy Buchanan is in a marriage money instead of for love. Although she did not have the patience
to wait for Gatsby to obtain his riches, he spent several years of his life solely focusing on his goals
to be a rich, elaborately successful man. Neither of the two are truly happy although they are
assumed to be because they have more money than they could ever possibly handle. Although
money can make a person feel powerful, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the book to show the readers that
it's not always the case because money could not buy happiness. Jay Gatsby spent his entire life
earning his fortune so he could impress and essentially feel like he owns Daisy. When he had to
leave her, he had explained to her that he did not want to marry her until he made enough money to
support her, and how he wanted her to wait. Once Gatsby became rich, he let rumors spread on the
kind of man that he is and how he got his riches. The rumors made him seem powerful and
mysterious but he wanted Nick to know who he

Gender Roles In The Play Trifles
The play Trifles takes place in the early 20th century, with gender roles definitively established. It
represents little equality, with men assuming that they are far superior to their female counterparts.
The men in the play disregard the women as just engaging in irrelevant matters, when in fact the
women find themselves delving headlong into the investigation and stumbling upon the motive for
the murder. The play having the name Trifles is ironic in that the men assume that the women are
concerned about petty womanish things that would never be of assistance to the investigation, when
in fact the womanish things turn out to be the evidence that would be necessary to prosecute Mrs.
Wright. The men search for what they suspect to cause the motives in similar situations with the
typical mindset of a man. While the men are wasting their time thinking like typical men of the time,
they ignore the obvious clues within Mrs. Wright's daily activities, such as her sewing, the dirty
table, and looking through the cabinets where they would have found the broken canary cage. As the
men believe that the "women are used to worrying over trifles" it appears that these trifles actually

Summary Of The Paradox Of Choice: Why More Is Less
Happiness is an emotion triggered when our needs are satisfied and fulfilled. There are many
different ways people can attempt to achieve happiness, such as, through obtaining material
possessions (Van Boven & Gilovich, 2003). New possessions are exciting, it increases our self–
esteem and boosts our confidence. However, many researchers suggest that the relationships we
have with others have a greater effect on our happiness than material possessions (Kasser, 2004).
Even though material things gives us a positive feeling, the relationships we have with others is
what makes people happy because memories and experiences last longer than material things,
material things get old and the excitement for them will eventually fade.
It was a culture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, buying the latest car or pre–ordering the newest iPhone does not make a person happier.
Some people may disagree with this opinion because everyone feels excited when we have new
things, which triggers a positive emotional feeling. However, according to "The Paradox of Choice:
Why More is Less," a book by Barry Schwartz, a psychologist who studies the link between
psychology and economics, "part of our human psychology is the process of adaptation," which
means we get used to things and eventually the feeling of excitement eventually fades. Therefore,
material things do not define happiness. In fact, a study of adult development that was conducted 75
years ago, says that the reason people are happy is because of the love, support, and the overall
quality of the relationships they have with others, not money or material things. Robert Walkdinger,
a psychoanalyst and the director of the study, says that founders of the study learned that "the quality
of relationships we have with others, keep us happier and healthier." Additionally, according to
another study from Harvard University, "Stumbling on Happiness," Dr. Daniel Gilbert, the social
psychologist claims, "The best predictor of human happiness is human relationships and the amount
of time that people spend with family and

Buddhism : Buddhism And Buddhism
Buddhism is a philosophy that is often viewed as a religion and dates back to approximately 6th
century B.C.E. Buddhism originated in the Indian subcontinent by a man known as Siddhartha
Gautama. The original language of Buddhism is often debated as some scholars believe that it was
first practiced in Pali while other believe it was first spoken in Sanskrit. The practice of Buddhism
first spread to China in the 2nd century A.C.E and was translated to Mandarin in 3rd century A.C.E.
Today, there are approximately half a billion Buddhists worldwide (CNN). The main branches of
Buddhism are: Theravada Buddhism, Mahayana Buddhism, and Vajrayana Buddhism
(Whittlemore). To speak briefly of the three schools; Theravada Buddhism is the most conservative
or orthodox of the branches as it uses Buddha's original teaches and themes without alterations;
Mahayana Buddhism teaches that spiritual bliss is universally accessible to everyone no matter of
the person's background or religious belief; Vajrayana Buddhism, also known as Tibetan Buddhism,
is the smallest of the three branches and hold many gurus as political leaders. The most well known
leader of Vajrayana Buddhism is the Dalai Lama. Buddhism has several main components such as
its early teachings from Buddha, co–dependent arising, and the concept of no self. Siddhartha
Gautama, also known as the Buddha, which means "the awaken/enlightened" one, is the founder of
the Buddhist tradition. Siddhartha lived from 566 BCE to 486 BCE. He

Sleep Is Wrong Persuasive Speech
Often times we may know we are sleep deprived, but simply ignore the signs. In order to bring more
awareness to the signs of chronic sleep loss, YouBeauty Expert and director of Behavorial Sleep
Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, Shelby Freedman Harris, shared what to
look for to find out if you need more shut–eye with The Huffington Post:
1. You are falling asleep super fast: While many people see it as a sign of being a great sleeper, it's
actually the opposite. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke,
consistently falling asleep within 5 minutes of lying down, you may be severely sleep deprived or
have a sleep disorder.
2. You are more impulsive than usual: Did you just splurge on an expensive pair of shoes, or eat 2
donuts this morning? Your lack of sleep may be the culprit if it isn't your typical behavior. Sleep
deprivation affects the prefrontal cortex of the brain, which is associated with impulse control,

described people in our society. The cage in the poem signifies different barriers, struggles,

My Papa's Waltz Literary Devices
Theodore Roethke, the American poet who wrote many poems based on his past childhood events.
For some short time he surrounded himself around his father, until he suddenly passed away. After
the death, Roethke suffered many manic episodes of depression, anger and excitement. His poems
also portray this sense of mania by alternating between happiness, fear and love. Roethke's use of
rhythm, rhyme and diction impact the theme of his poem: "My Papa's Waltz". Rhythm is clearly
presented in "My Papa's Waltz". Not only does the author use the word waltz multiple times, but the
story also portrays the rhythm of a waltz. This style of dance is a ¾ time, and is counted as one–
two– three. This movement is easy and simple to learn... Relating this back to the poem, we see that
the rhythm of the poem is an iambic trimeter. Within each line we find a three beats. "The whisk/ey

He uses similes, metaphors and paradoxes. For example "Hung on like death" (3). In this case the
author is trying to say that he hung on to his father for his life; his father could have been "dancing"
or moving so fast and unsteady, he felt he could have die from it. The author also shows a paradox.
"Such waltzing was not easy." (4). This statement is contradictory because waltzing is simple and
very easy to learn. If readers consider waltzing to be the unsteady walk of his drunken father, this
statement could mean the young boy does not understand why his father is stumbling around, which
also reveals the how the boy is so young he doesn't understand why his father is stumbling around.
The metaphor is shown when the author says, "You beat time on my head" (13). This physically
cannot happen, as you cannot beat time on someone's head. This metaphor can indicate that his
father is indeed abusive, or it may represent that his father is just punctual, leaving the choice again,
for the reader to decide in love or

The Quality Of Life, And The Quality Of Life
"What does "quality of life" mean? Is it happiness, wellness, health, fitness, or fun? May be it refers
to the absence of disease, leisure time, freedom from oppression, or safety from harm, quality of
life, although defined individually, in today's world increasingly means a long and healthy life"
(Surolia, S). Quality of life is a matter entirely subjective. Accordingly, each person has the right to
choose the attitude that best suits his or her self. In some cases, people have a good quality of life
such they have a lot of money that they can buy anything they want, however, it does not mean they
have a happy life. The most important thing in this condition is choosing a suitable life and
comfortable. "Older people, like younger adults, need intimacy of all sorts to be happy and healthy"
(Moody and Sasser, 2017). I believe that mostly, the quality of life does not change much over time
for each person. Therefore, for me, the quality of life now and in the future at about 80s might be the
same. Generally, there are many different factors might affect quality of life of people such as
family, school, health, etc. First, the most important factor quality of my life is a relationship with
my family members and my friends. Family or home is a place for you to believe, motivation and
strength to do everything. Family is also a place for you to find peace, shelter and comfort when
experiencing the sadness, the failure in life. In the most difficult times of our lives, each of us

That is exactly what any gay couple may face because it is illegal for them and their significant

If homosexuals were allowed the right to marry in the eyes of the government, they could take better

Dan Gilbert Stuck Between Two Choices Analysis

  • 1. Dan Gilbert Stuck Between Two Choices Analysis Stuck Between Two Choices? Stuck trying to decide between two choices? This article will help you out. What Will Make You Happy? Dan Gilbert, the author of Stumbling on Happiness, has a super popular Ted Talk, The Surprising Science of Happiness. I never liked it. Especially the term "synthetic happiness" because it sounded like we should never try to be happy, but just accept things how they are, but I was missing the point. The point was, that the path we choose in life (or the path forced on us) rewires our brains so that it make us happy about it. And that means even being wrongly convicted and being in jail for decades could be a "glorious experience" for some people. Thus, the only way to not be happy is to not chooose, to stay stuck where you are. And that's where you are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A coin flip? No. The top regret of many on their death bed is: I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. There is more to happiness than just synthesizing it. Even Dan Gilbert is very clear about this. You can't desire two things equally, you desire one more than the other. But you are stuck because the one true path you want to take takes courage. Here is the truth not one else has the guts to tell you: there is only one path for you. And of the "two" paths you have, one you are letting people decide your life for you, doing what society wants. You are being dragged along, you are drifting. Here is the thing, synthetic happiness only comes when a situation is forced on you or you choose

How to Take Action And I bet your "second" path that you are afraid to take has to do with it being irreversible. • 4. Analysis Of Stumbling On Happiness By Daniel Gilbert Known for his research on affective forecasting, the prediction of how the future can affect ones emotional state, Daniel Gilbert, wrote a book explaining how people tend to have delusions of their future which often misleads peoples' happiness. This Harvard college professor of psychology published one of the best time selling books, Stumbling on Happiness, arguing that imagination is what triggers peoples joy. As a social psychologist Gilbert wanted to understand what is it that truly causes that feeling to come. People continue believing in beliefs that aren't necessary true simply because people and society can't handle the truth. For instance, if you give up after a failure, you will never reach your goals. In the final chapter of Stumbling on Happiness, Gilbert addresses how people who only imagine what will make them happy in the future tend to make poor decisions. He includes how "...a lot of the advice we receive from others is bad advice that we foolishly accept..." while, "a lot of the advice we receive from others is good advice that we foolishly reject". ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout my years of growing up I have heard this saying many time and in many different ways. I've heard from my parents, my family members, teachers, counselors, guest speaker, etc. But most of the people I have heard from said it in a similar way which was, "with success comes failures". While I was in middle even in high school my classes had numerous amounts of guest speakers trying to persuade the kids to become successful in life and motivating us to never stop reaching for our goals even though if you stumble during the process, you should never give up. Many people have a mindset that causes them to believe that if you fail in something you will never be successful but I believe that this is one of those false belief ... Essay Overall Fitness David Cosford Unit 9 Project HW280 I feel that these skills play a crucial role in my life due to my own personal journey as a better person both physically and spiritually. As I have been reading Emotional Intelligence (D.Goleman, 1995), I find myself identifying with the sort of awareness and insights that are present and I can honestly say that I have been accused my whole life of being to emotional or deemed the sensitive one. I had a rough upbringing and I was very negative in my social life. Distant, angry but this somehow managed to help me view things differently as I matured and came into my own as a responsible adult. Actually telling someone that things don't always turn out as planned is met with a defiant refusal to admitting this notion. There is no diminishment in our personal attempts to stay on track when our minds have been made up. The human desire to be in control is so powerful we refuse to even admit to losing control. This way of thinking can ultimately blind the mind from accepting just how unprepared we are to see the future we want, or think we do. Following the Health Status Questionnaire, My general medical history has been pretty clean over the last twenty years. I am a non–smoker; I rarely if ever drink alcohol. There is no history of any heart problems or symptoms pertaining to any heart disease. Some additional health issues I currently face are joint problems, concerns about the safety of exercise and pains in my lower leg due to an injury I sustained in my teenage years. The health risk factors I currently face are pretty minor. I am only 35 yrs. of age with no prior history of drug and alcohol abuse, and no close relatives who suffered from any major heart problems. I am as active as I can be despite my injury that I am currently awaiting consultation for as to what can be done surgically/therapeutically. • 8. Stumbling on Happiness Essay What is Happiness? People travel through life with what seems like a single goal: to be happy. This may seem like a selfish way to live, however this lone objective is the motivation behind nearly all actions. Even seemingly selfless deeds make people feel better about themselves. That warm feeling experienced while doing charitable acts can be described as happiness. But what is authentic happiness? There is an endless possibility of answers to this question, and man seems to be always searching for the solution. Although one may reach his or her goals, there is always still something one strives for in order to be happy. In the book Stumbling on Happiness, Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert takes the reader through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "When people find it easy to imagine an event, they overestimate the likelihood that it will actually occur" (Gilbert, 2006, p.19.) Gilbert explains that this causes us to be overoptimistic about our futures and thus changes what we do in order to be happy. Young people imagine traveling the world, starting a successful business or becoming a star. Later on in one's life they may realize that they do not have the funds to travel the world, the talent to become a star, or even the desire to start their own business. Perhaps they come to the conclusion that they would be happier starting a family or writing a book. Humans have an undeniable want to control. The reason somebody imagines the future is so they can do something about it (Gilbert, 2006, p. 21.) We imagine a future better than today so we can take the actions necessary to get to the better tomorrow. I imagined college being a whole lot better than high school. The freedom and the separation from my parents was something I wanted. So in order to get here I studied hard in high school, strove for a good ACT score, and applied to universities. The actions I took in high school were in order to control the future. Gilbert answers the question of "Why should we want to control our futures?" "It feels good to do so– period. Impact is rewarding. Mattering makes us happy. The act of steering one's boat down the river of time is a source of pleasure, regardless of one's port of call" (Gilbert, ... • 10. Love After Love : Love After Love By Derek Wallcott Love after Love At a first glance, the title of the poem, "Love after Love", might appear to imitate another soppy love poem written by another pretentious poet claiming to know yet another secret to a perfect love. One could not be more wrong. Nor, would one know, at a glance, the impact Derek Wallcott's poem, "Love After Love", has had on my life. An impact that would make all the difference, through all of the trials and tribulations, seventeen–year–old me has endured so far. In a short fifteen lines, I have relearned the everlasting importance of self–love and the transformative powers I hold within myself. These lessons which I vowed, to never let myself, again, forget. As a thirteen–year–old girl, thrust into the cruelest, most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As it is hard to feel happy for another, while jealous, it was nearly impossible for me to completely love others without loving myself in return. I had become so familiar with the darkness that I allowed to consume me after years of loathing everything I was, that I made sure to never let myself become accustomed to that feeling ever again because I knew how hard it was to get out. In Italo Calvino's essay, "Why Read the Classics?", he asserts that literature should help us "discover something we have always known" (Calvino 3). Walcott takes that very much literally and demands that we should rediscover our past selves and "peel our own image from the mirror" and "give our heart back" to ourselves (Walcott). While most people believe that to be happy, we must remake ourselves into an entirely different being, Walcott reminds us that we, in our innocence, were at one point, the best self we could be. Our only task is to rediscover and retransition into that person we once knew so well and loved so much. The world drills into our minds that we must be bigger, stronger, faster, the most successful and the most self–sufficient in this competitive world. "Love after Love" exudes the truth that even our incomplete, imperfect self's, are in fact, enough. I am enough. These words have helped me focus on all of the many good qualities I already possess, rather than the ones I don't. While it was a tough road to self– discovery, I believe in full faith, that ... • 12. A Clean Well-Lighted Place Response Response Paper #2 Wealth does not equate to happiness Elderly people may be thought of as content, rich, or happy to see such a long life. This is true in some instances, but money does not bring happiness to one's life. The joy of family friends and love is what brings true smiles to someone's face. In "A Clean, Well–Lighted Place" by Ernest Hemingway the older gentleman is depressed about life and likes to drink his sorrows away, although he is wealthy it does not make him happy. Throughout this story the narrator depicts characterization the most in many instances, through the older man and the waiters. By the man's actions, and also the younger waiters choice of words. The theme is evident that if you are rich you will not always be happy with life, looking past the wealth it is the small things in life everyone may take for granted. ... Nothing. How do you know it was nothing? He has plenty of money" (Hemingway). Missing his loved ones more than anything, money is just a variable to him, meaningless, he wants back what he cannot have and that is his beloved wife. Which is reasonable, losing a loved one is a tough pill to swallow for anyone, but rising above the loss shows true character in one's self. He shows sadness even with money, through his actions by drinking heavily. And by his thoughts, thinking it is ok to commit suicide over you not being happy with one thing in life that is ... In fact, when he dropped out of high school, at the age of 19, he wanted to become a Science Fiction writer. After several years of hitchhiking across America Daniel decided to go to community college and become a Science Fiction writer, but the only class left was Introduction to Psychology. Subsequently, he went to the University of Colorado Denver where he received his BA in Psychology in 1981. Daniel went on to get his PhD in Social Psychology from Princeton University in 1985. • 16. An Analysis of 'The Pursuit of Happiness' The Pursuit of Happyness Abstract Some of the most common themes in contemporary biographical films revolve around social life as well as the accompanying problems that living in today's society entails. By making connections to individual personal lives, these films help most people make sense of the world in which they live. In this regard, this paper focuses on the film, The Pursuit of Happyness outlining various cultural issues as well as problems faced by the starring; Will Smith playing Chris Gardner in the movie. Moreover, the paper discusses how such factual films reflect and create popular ideas about social problems. Introduction The Pursuit of Happyness is a factual film based on Chris Gardner's near one–year struggle with homelessness, fatherhood, divorce and a desire to achieve to fend for his son Christopher Junior. It is a story highlighting a man's ambition to achieve his goals and find a way of caring for his son. Set in San Francisco, the film starts with Gardner investing his life savings in Bone–Density scanners, a white elephant project which financially breaks the family; his wife separates from him leaving him with the custody of their son Christopher. Additional problems set in ranging from Gardner's eviction from his house, garnishment of his bank account as well as his credit cards. In line with this, he is forced to live in the streets but his meeting with Jay, the manager at Dean Witter places him on the path to success; his new–found ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. Stumbling On Happiness Summary In Stumbling on Happiness, Daniel Gilbert explores the question of why humans fail to know what will make them happy in the future. In chapter 5 Gilbert explains how we imagine in more detail for the near future experiences rather than long term because out brains have a lot more filling in of information to do; however I disagree. In terms of making plans 2 weeks in advance he might be right, but in terms of the far future, for example 20 years, I feel as if I have many significant goals and expectations that I see in my future, and I feel as if they are more thought out than my journey to those goals or my actions in my near future. This may be because I am what one might consider a "dreamer," but I feel as if I spend a lot of time thinking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Firstly, the notion of honesty and hard work leading to success is problematic and misleading. The myth can be more reasonable if part of it can be broadened: the integrity of honesty, hard work, right opportunities, and smart decisions will bring people success. One of the failures of the current myth of success is the fact that, although it stays valid for a small group of people, it does not address the realities of success for most of the population. Stumbling On Happiness Daniel Gilbert Summary In chapter 6 of the book Stumbling on Happiness written by Daniel Gilbert, the author suggests that when people imagine their future happiness, their current emotions or feelings affect them the most. In chapter 6, the mechanism of how people imagine their future happiness is a problem that Daniel Gilbert explains to the readers. The reason why Daniel Gilbert highlighted this problem is that people typically think they will have the equal happiness in the presence and in the future. • 26. Love For The First Time When you fall in love for the first time you think you are high in the sky (and no, not in that way). Everything is beautiful, colorful, and perfect; at least that's how I felt. When I had my first boyfriend, I felt free and careless, There weren't bad days and I felt complete because he was by my side. Finally, someone understood my bad jokes and weird sense of humor. It was the best time of my life, and after a long time, I felt happy. I know it sounds cliché, but that's how stupidly happy love can make you. We have met for six years, he was in the same school as me and he later confesses to me 3 months after our graduation. Well, I push him a little bit, because he was afraid that I would reject him or that it would ruin our friendship, but I told him that I felt the same way, and since then we were together for two years as an official couple. Unfortunately, it didn't last long. He had a friend who spent a lot of time with him, and I guess that little by little he started to get feelings for her, he did the right thing and told me about it before he could cheat on me. We end up on good terms and till this day we talk to each other as good friends because either way our relationship at that point (last few months) felt empty and it was like we got bored of each other, we realized that what we felt was not love in a romantic way, but as friends. She is looked upon as a breathing representation of Hester's sin, the Puritans see Pearl as a "devil child" that should not be accepted, and she is a constant reminder to Hester of her transgression. From the first moment Hawthorne introduces Pearl in The Scarlet Letter it is evident that Pearl is looked at as a mistake. Hawthorne describes the newborn as the one, "whose innocent life has sprung, by the inscrutable decree of Providence, a lovely and immortal flower, out of the rank luxuriance of a guilty passion" (6.82). • 32. Short Story Of My Story My story begins in London, England. I have two parents who seem to form an oxymoron, because even from a young age I could tell that they were the complete opposites from each other. I vividly recall living with my school friend for around a week and wondering what I had done to deserve such a fantastic vacation. When I was finally allowed to return to my parents, I did not return to the apartment I was familiar with, but a duplex house with another family I had never met before. It was much later in life, through discussion with my parents, that I learned that we were evicted. This kind of financial struggle has followed me all throughout my life. There has only ever been enough revenue to make sure our stomachs are full and to pay the bills. Afterwards, barely anything. However, these struggles have taught me that money is not happiness. In my house, there was and still is, consistent laughter. The oxymoron made it known that they loved me, no matter what the circumstance may have been. They taught me that family is important; life is can never terrible when family is there. I vowed that when I have my family, I would work as hard as I can to maintain happiness at home because happiness is the greatest medicine, the healer of all ailments. A feeling of exultation overtook her, as if some power of significant import had been given her to control the working of her body and her soul. In the preceding passage, Edna Pontellier swims for the first time by herself. Much is symbolized and foreshadowed in this passage. Throughout the summer, Edna's husband, Mr. Pontellier, and many other people have been trying to teach her. However, Edna was never able to swim with the help of others. The fact that she finally is able to swim unaided symbolizes Edna's awakening sense of independence and self–reliance. The ocean parallels Edna's feelings. It is described with diction such as "space and solitude", "vast expanse" and "unlimited." The words "significant import...given her to control the working of her body and her soul" also support this. Edna realizes she is in control of herself and can attain happiness by her own means. Similarly, the control Edna has over her body suggests her awakening sense of sexuality. It is around the time of this swim that Edna acutely develops feelings for Robert LeBrun. The ocean that Edna swims in could also symbolize her awakening as a rebirth of herself. She is described as a "tottering, stumbling, clutching child" when in the water. Throughout the novel, Edna is often portrayed as a child. • 40. Voluntaryly Childless Couples "Be fruitful and multiply," this is the word of the Lord. However, this is now being challenged by some married couples as there is an increasing rate of married couples choosing to remain childless. The traditional definition of a family is defined as a man and a woman living together with child /children. However, a new family type has emerged, such as voluntary childless couples. In this family type the couple is married and is fully capable of biological reproduction, but have no intention of doing so. Thus, voluntary childlessness among a married couple exists for a number of reasons: due to achieving a higher level of educational attainment, so as to pursue a higher standard of living and fear that children will potentially cause an unhappy marriage. Because of achieving a higher level of educational attainment, some married couples choose to remain childless. The household childlessness rate is strongly linked to married couples with high educational level. For example, the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicated that the proportion of couples aged 45–49 years who were childless increased with higher level of educational attainment. The statistics highlighted that the highest proportion of childless married couples were among those with a bachelor degree or higher (20%), compared with 12% of those with an undergraduate or associate diploma. Couples with no post–school qualifications had the lowest level of childlessness (9%). It is seen that the delaying of child ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. The Pros And Cons Of Blue-Sky Research By "blue–sky" research, Sir John Vane means researching and spending time partaking in activities that a person is genuinely interested in, not wasting time on activities with a goal of reaching an end–product or result. Rather than using research as a means of self indulgence, Sir John Vane uses the notion of blue–sky research to instead participate in what one is interested in. Advantages to blue–sky research include the development of Bayer aspirin and its' effects on society today. Through genuine interest, Felix Hoffman was able to stumble upon the creation of aspirin, something beneficial to millions today. Ian Frazier connects blue–sky research to playing in the woods with an explanation of marginal activities. Marginal activities are activities that certain members of society, depending on their place or age, participate in with genuine interest and enjoyment. For example, an adult would not be seen playing in the woods, as opposed to a child. Inversely, a child would not be seen studying about the stock exchange. With these supposed cultural constructs, Ian Frazier reminisces about when he would play in the woods with genuine interest and satisfaction. Ian Frazier's marginal activity connects to Sir John Vane's blue–sky research through the fact that both include genuine, satisfying activities that enrich the community. As explained in Sir John Vane's essay, "Blue–Sky Research," such research "[holds] great promise for the community," helping reverse today's "urgency to show a return," (346). Because of Frazier's enjoyment, playing in the woods was not a rushed activity, connecting to blue–sky research and helping push Sir John Vane's philosophy. I agree that without such research, society would indeed be poorer, as would be our health. Blue–sky research is needed for the betterment of society today. Without a genuine interest or satisfaction in an activity, one would not have a place or fit in society. Definition Of Jeffersonian Democracy The dictionary definition of democracy reads, "a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives (Merriam–Webster's collegiate dictionary, 1999)." This definition, however central to our American Government, is fairly vague, and as a result has been interpreted in thousands of ways. Each individual political leader has had a unique personal definition of what democracy means, and how it can best be applied. The definition presented in the Declaration of Independence comes from its author, Thomas Jefferson, and is appropriately known as "Jeffersonian Democracy." Jeffersonian Democracy was the first personalized form of democracy that our country experienced, though it is a form that has been altered into extinction over the last (approximately) two hundred years. Despite being the primary form of government represented in the Declaration of Independence, Jeffersonian democracy is a form seldom applied in present–day America. The primary belief associated with Jeffersonian democracy is of a small and efficient central government. It is fundamentally known that, "Jefferson... felt that the central government should be rigorously frugal and simple. (Heller)" This concept is the origin of Anti Federalist/Republican belief. It is also present in the writing of the Declaration, specifically in the line, "... to secure these rights (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness), governments are instituted among ... The Nature Of Happiness By Daniel Gilbert You may have guessed Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert is all about what makes people happy, how to make people happy, and why people feel happy in certain situations. This assumption is correct, but Gilbert digs much deeper than these three simple questions. He discusses the nature of happiness and explains the many, many psychological illusions that alter our perception of happiness. Gilbert focuses on why happiness is so difficult to measure and why many people have bias views regarding happiness. After reading this book, I feel as if I have a more insightful view about the human mind and how it works. Personally, I think the following quote by Gilbert sums up his book: "Our desire to control is so powerful, and the feeling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We often look forward in time to reduce the impact of unpleasant situations and to try to control and change our future. Gilbert goes on to describe what "happiness" is. He says happiness is a "subjective feeling", meaning it is impossible to compare two different individuals' level of happiness at a given time. When humans try to compare happiness they often compare their happiness in the present with something they experienced in the past. Gilbert explains that even when our minds compare two different things in the present we still tend to fail to notice differences. Everyone has a "blind spot of visual perception" that we fill in with what we think should be there. Gilbert compares this to our memory. Humans only store facts and feelings in our memory that we believe are important, so when we look back at a certain memory we simply fill in the missing details. In one of the studies Gilbert discusses, he describes how this "filling in" process happens when we imagine the future as well. Our brains fill in details about future experiences, and we are unaware this process is happening. We don't notice the important details we may be leaving out. Humans see things that are closer to them with more complexity than those things that are far ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 56. Money: Power or Happiness? Since the early years of America, the rich have been considered the most powerful. Poor people were not considered very significant simply because they were unlike the rich. While wealth was desirable it wasn't always worth having because money cannot buy happiness. F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby reflexes this idea that money, although seen as power, cannot resemble happiness. In the book, many of the characters think their lives are more significant because they are wealthy. Daisy Buchanan is in a marriage money instead of for love. Although she did not have the patience to wait for Gatsby to obtain his riches, he spent several years of his life solely focusing on his goals to be a rich, elaborately successful man. Neither of the two are truly happy although they are assumed to be because they have more money than they could ever possibly handle. Although money can make a person feel powerful, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the book to show the readers that it's not always the case because money could not buy happiness. Jay Gatsby spent his entire life earning his fortune so he could impress and essentially feel like he owns Daisy. When he had to leave her, he had explained to her that he did not want to marry her until he made enough money to support her, and how he wanted her to wait. It represents little equality, with men assuming that they are far superior to their female counterparts. The men in the play disregard the women as just engaging in irrelevant matters, when in fact the women find themselves delving headlong into the investigation and stumbling upon the motive for the murder. The play having the name Trifles is ironic in that the men assume that the women are concerned about petty womanish things that would never be of assistance to the investigation, when in fact the womanish things turn out to be the evidence that would be necessary to prosecute Mrs. Wright. The men search for what they suspect to cause the motives in similar situations with the typical mindset of a man. The women have an entirely different view on the situation. Mrs. Hale is remorseful for never visiting Mrs. Wright "I could've come. I stayed away because it weren't cheerful" (Glaspell 1390). The women believe that the crime that should be punished is what could have prevented the crime "Oh, I wish I'd come over here once in a while! That was a crime" (Glaspell ... • 60. Summary Of The Paradox Of Choice: Why More Is Less Happiness is an emotion triggered when our needs are satisfied and fulfilled. There are many different ways people can attempt to achieve happiness, such as, through obtaining material possessions (Van Boven & Gilovich, 2003). New possessions are exciting, it increases our self– esteem and boosts our confidence. However, many researchers suggest that the relationships we have with others have a greater effect on our happiness than material possessions (Kasser, 2004). Even though material things gives us a positive feeling, the relationships we have with others is what makes people happy because memories and experiences last longer than material things, material things get old and the excitement for them will eventually fade. It was a culture ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, buying the latest car or pre–ordering the newest iPhone does not make a person happier. Some people may disagree with this opinion because everyone feels excited when we have new things, which triggers a positive emotional feeling. However, according to "The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less," a book by Barry Schwartz, a psychologist who studies the link between psychology and economics, "part of our human psychology is the process of adaptation," which means we get used to things and eventually the feeling of excitement eventually fades. Therefore, material things do not define happiness. In fact, a study of adult development that was conducted 75 years ago, says that the reason people are happy is because of the love, support, and the overall quality of the relationships they have with others, not money or material things. Robert Walkdinger, a psychoanalyst and the director of the study, says that founders of the study learned that "the quality of relationships we have with others, keep us happier and healthier." Additionally, according to another study from Harvard University, "Stumbling on Happiness," Dr. Daniel Gilbert, the social psychologist claims, "The best predictor of human happiness is human relationships and the amount of time that people spend with family and ... • 66. Oppression Of The Caged Bird In Harper Lee's Poem This poem revolved around human rights, freedom, prejudice and slavery based on the author's background. This poem indirectly compared a caged bird and free bird to people in our society today. This poem portrayed a thin line between oppression and the cage in the poem; and freedom and sky for both birds. Even though, the poem compared and talked about birds; it literally actually described people in our society. The cage in the poem signifies different barriers, struggles, stumbling blocks and obstructions in life such as lack of education, discrimination, abuse, secrets and various traumatic experiences. "The caged bird that stalks down his narrow cage whose wings are clipped and his feet are tied." On the other hand, the sky signifies wonderful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. My Papa's Waltz Literary Devices Theodore Roethke, the American poet who wrote many poems based on his past childhood events. For some short time he surrounded himself around his father, until he suddenly passed away. After the death, Roethke suffered many manic episodes of depression, anger and excitement. His poems also portray this sense of mania by alternating between happiness, fear and love. Roethke's use of rhythm, rhyme and diction impact the theme of his poem: "My Papa's Waltz". Rhythm is clearly presented in "My Papa's Waltz". Not only does the author use the word waltz multiple times, but the story also portrays the rhythm of a waltz. This style of dance is a ¾ time, and is counted as one– two– three. This movement is easy and simple to learn... Relating this back to the poem, we see that the rhythm of the poem is an iambic trimeter. Within each line we find a three beats. "The whisk/ey on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He uses similes, metaphors and paradoxes. For example "Hung on like death" (3). In this case the author is trying to say that he hung on to his father for his life; his father could have been "dancing" or moving so fast and unsteady, he felt he could have die from it. The author also shows a paradox. "Such waltzing was not easy." (4). This statement is contradictory because waltzing is simple and very easy to learn. If readers consider waltzing to be the unsteady walk of his drunken father, this statement could mean the young boy does not understand why his father is stumbling around, which also reveals the how the boy is so young he doesn't understand why his father is stumbling around. The metaphor is shown when the author says, "You beat time on my head" (13). This physically cannot happen, as you cannot beat time on someone's head. This metaphor can indicate that his father is indeed abusive, or it may represent that his father is just punctual, leaving the choice again, for the reader to decide in love or ... • 70. The Quality Of Life, And The Quality Of Life "What does "quality of life" mean? Is it happiness, wellness, health, fitness, or fun? May be it refers to the absence of disease, leisure time, freedom from oppression, or safety from harm, quality of life, although defined individually, in today's world increasingly means a long and healthy life" (Surolia, S). Quality of life is a matter entirely subjective. Accordingly, each person has the right to choose the attitude that best suits his or her self. In some cases, people have a good quality of life such they have a lot of money that they can buy anything they want, however, it does not mean they have a happy life. The most important thing in this condition is choosing a suitable life and comfortable. "Older people, like younger adults, need intimacy of all sorts to be happy and healthy" (Moody and Sasser, 2017). I believe that mostly, the quality of life does not change much over time for each person. Therefore, for me, the quality of life now and in the future at about 80s might be the same. Generally, there are many different factors might affect quality of life of people such as family, school, health, etc. First, the most important factor quality of my life is a relationship with my family members and my friends. Family or home is a place for you to believe, motivation and strength to do everything. Family is also a place for you to find peace, shelter and comfort when experiencing the sadness, the failure in life. In the most difficult times of our lives, each of us ... To Kill A Mockingbird: A Short Story I can still remember the horror on my mom's face when she got the news, the loud stomps Atticus made as he ran away somberly, and the tears slowly dripping off my eyes as I laid on the floor. Although in that moment something flashed before my eyes, it was a picture of him,my uncle Baltazar. And at that moment time seemed to slow down almost frozen letting me take a strong look at the picture taken on my sixth birthday of him, my mother, my father, and I. suddenly the room is filled with noise from all around, breaking through the barriers of tears that had stopped dripping. I lifted myself up what seemed to be an endless stairway to take my mind off the topic and something happened again, this time as a voice, as soft feather falling to the earth from the heavens. And bringing memories to which I cried to and as the salty waves rush down my face I jump back to reality as a dead silence fills the house. Stepping down the the ragy beat up old stairs I see everyone on their knees praying for some strange reason so I tried not to make a noise, not even a step later I am shushed and told to go outside. Closing the gigantic door behind me very featherly, I strolled around the 12 and a half acres of property we have, thinking while ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
