Introduction The first question to be addressed in this study is, will there be varying tree seedling
species diversity in relation to varying levels of burn severity? My hypothesis for this question is
that we will see the highest tree species diversity where we see a moderate level of burn severity.
The second question of the study asks, did the presence of salvage logging lead to a difference in the
tree seedling densities as compared to unlogged sites? My hypothesis for this question is that there
will be a greater density of tree species in the salvage logged site than the unlogged site.

(m), percent slope of transects, aspect (in magnetic degrees), and the latitude and longitude, using a
GPS for accuracy. Sampling on logged sites was done using 30 m belt transects extending out at

Likewise, my mother has played a key role in shaping me into who I am. She have helped me grow

Plants are important life forms belonging to the taxonomic kingdom Plantae and are classified
further by the hierarchical system to group similar plants together. Taxonomy is described as "the
method by which scientists, conservationists, and naturalists classify and organize the vast diversity
of living things on this planet in an effort to understand the evolutionary relationships between
them" (Fenneman, 2017). How a plant is classified can be a clue to the uses for that plant in regards
to human life. Historically, plants have played a vast role in the everyday lives of humans.
Indigenous peoples have used over a thousand different plants for food, medicine, materials, and in
cultural rituals and mythology (Szczawinski and Turner, 1978–80). People mainly consumed root
vegetables and green vegetables. Fruits, nuts, seeds, berries, and mushrooms were also traditionally
used as a source of food. Plants also contributed in the development of many different medicines
throughout history. Plant parts were often combined with herbs to create cures for many ailments.
Herbal medicines were sometimes associated with ritual and in many cultures herbal curing and
ritual curing were often performed together (Szczawinski and Turner, 1978–80). Plants have played
a very important role in helping to preserve the human race, from building our homes to supplying

The Mood of the Reader. The famous philosopher Plato once said, "You can discover more about a
person with an hour of play than in a year of conversation." But dialogue and figurative language
can help the reader understand people, and their surroundings. An hour of play can't tell their
deepest secrets and their emotions to bring your fate's together. In The House of the Scorpion by
Nancy Farmer, the dialogue of her characters and the descriptive language she uses helps show the
mood and helps inference more about the novel. Nancy Farmer creates fascinating dialogue to
introduce the mood and the characters. In the book the author uses a lot of dialogue to move the
events along and introduce feelings to the reader. For instance, when Matt, the main character, and
Matt's friend, see a man lying on the ground and say to each other, "'Can't we–can't we help him?'
faltered Matt. 'It's too late for that poor soul,' grunted the bodyguard. 'What about the doctor?'" This
quote indicates how kind of a heart Matt has. It introduces guilt to the reader of the man lying there
and a little pleasure of knowing that the main character isn't soulless. It helps add feelings and depth
of the understanding of the reader when reading this dialogue. Secondly, when Celia, Matt's
guardian is leaving for work, says,"'What's this?' the woman said. 'You're a big boy now, almost six.

"Break of Day in the Trenches" is by one of the First World War's leading war poets, Isaac
Rosenberg. Many often remember Rosenberg as a Jewish–English poet, or a poet of war, but there is
more to his writing than what meets the eye. Rosenberg died at the age of twenty–eight in World
War I on April 1, 1918. Critics often say that Isaac was an impressive young poet and that his future
was bright in the poetry world. It can be seen throughout his poems that Isaac incorporates a large
amount of symbolism and feeling into his pieces.
A primary focus for Rosenberg's poems is centered around the hardship and struggle in war. For
example, a few of his most famous poems including "Dead Man's Dump," "On Receiving News of
the War," "Soldier: Twentieth Century" and "Break of Day in the Trenches" all incorporate the
mentality of a soldier facing battle. It is easy for an individual to talk about the thought of war and
the struggle that a soldier may face. Furthermore, Rosenberg wrote from his experience as a young
man going through such a horrific event, which allowed his readers to see what he saw, feel what he
felt, and undergo what he went through. He mastered this art form in the early years of his life and
shared his work with the world. In many cases, he describes an object or occurrence and lets the
description do most of the work. Instead of using the rhyming schemes or more structural outlines
of poetry, Isaac approaches more of a free verse technique of writing in in his work. For example, in

The seed is surrounded by an encasing that protects the internal embryo from the external elements
such as parasites and the weather while the seed is in the resting stage (also known as
dormancy).The dormancy stage occurs before germination. Finally, germination occurs when the
embryo resumes growth by bursting through the encasing. Germination can only occur under
specific conditions involving sunlight, water, oxygen and the right temperature. The length of
germination varies depending on the seed and species. However, the process can be sped up or

In this lab, the seeds in the pH of seven, pure water, grew the most out of both trials, just as
predicted. In trial one, the radish seeds in pure water grew gradually over the period of six days,
reaching the germination of 23 of the 25 seeds. However, all of the seeds in the other Petri dishes
showed no growth over this course of time. Trial two mimicked about the same data, with 21 of the
25 seeds germinating in pure water and no growth in the other Petri dishes. The water in the Petri

the setting. To start off, the author uses descriptive adjectives in "The Monkey's Paw," to develop
setting in the story. This helps the reader see and feel the setting as if they were really there. In

Each of the compartments were subsequently watered until the soil was completely wet. The six tray
container was then placed on a rack under a source of light. Over a period of several weeks, the
plants were not given water. During the following week, the flowers were opened and the seeds
were collected from the dry seed pods. These were the seeds which were used to germinate the F2
generation. After the seeds were harvested, they were aloud to dry for one week. Paper towels with
grids drawn upon them were laid out on the germination container and then the seeds were placed in
each box. The seeds were sprayed using a spray bottle and then covered with the germination

were thrown away. There was a total of 18 plants in which the observed phenotype was 16 purple

evaluated in several previous studies. Three high yielding germplasm lines that contain exotic
ancestry have been released by USDA–ARS and the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station. The
released lines LG00–3372 from the cross PI 561319A × PI 574477 (Nelson and Johnson 2011a),

Advances in biotechnology and statistical programs have made it more efficient to map the locations
of genes and QTL. However, complex quantitative traits including seed yield are often difficult to
identify and their use in soybean breeding programs can be complicated by epistasis, QTL by
genetic background interactions, and QTL by environment interactions (Bernardo 2008; Yang et al.
2008). Strong interactions between QTL as well as between QTL and environments for seed yield

An Analysis Of Seamus Heaney's 'Mid-Term Break'
For most students, a break in school signifies the end of classes for the term and a well–deserved
vacation after a week of intense finals. For others, it is an opportunity to return home to the comfort
of family and friends. Yet other students take advantage of the opportunity to earn some money.
However, it can also be a time of change. Seamus Heaney's "Mid–Term Break" brilliantly depicts
the feeling of loss by using irony, imagery, time and symbolism to detail the timing of events when a
tragedy occurs in his family.
Heaney first uses irony in the title giving readers the sense that the poem will be about the exciting
and fun times of a school break. The word "mid–term" references a point in time as Heaney begins
to describe the time line of events of a student when a personal tragedy occurs back home. Another
reference to time is the word "break" used here to signify that something has come to an end.
Heaney writes the poem in a chronological order to show how he dealt with the emotional aspect of
death as a student. The poem begins with "I sat all morning in the college sick bay" (l. 1) to
establish the starting time and provides the approximate age (time) of the student. The use of the
word "sick" is a clue that the "break" is not a typical ending to the school term. When someone goes
to the nurse's office during school, it is usually because they are sick. Heaney first uses symbolism

In a country called Opium. But there's a catch, Matt isnt a real boy. He's a clone and was created in a
lab and given birth by a cow. Throughout his life he wasn't treated very nice for being a clone.

On May 8th 1840, the first camera on the world was invented by Alexander Wolcott. Since then,
people considered photography as an objective medium, which is always used to describe and
explain the reality and even considered for law enforcement. For example, pictures chalked on the

Both poems display suffering in similar ways; Both poems demonstrate the effects of war. Wilfred
Owen and Jane Weir are angry and frustrated about what has happened during and after the war.
Questions are a most common feature of both poems, they are designed to make the reader think.
Both writers make use of literary techniques to draw attention to especially important parts of the
poems. Even though they displayed suffering in similar ways they still used their own ideas and
approaches; Owen writes from the point of view of someone who was involved in the war. Weir
writes about mainly one soldier affected by the war.
Owen had joined the army in 1915 yet was hospitalized in May 1917 experiencing shell shock.
Owen, in the long run, came back to the war, however, was tragically killed days before the war
finished. He is currently thought of as one of Britain's most noteworthy war poets. `Exposure' gives
a direct image of life in the trenches during WW1. By the winter of 1917, the two sides had huge
losses of soldiers and extremely frosty climate. It was said to be the coldest winter in living
memory. Many troopes created trench foot, an infection caused by feet being wet and frosty and in
boots for days on end. The image Owen created through descriptive words in the readers minds
conflicted with the scenes displayed by the British press.

Ernest Hemmingway and Amitav Ghosh, both having completely different writing styles and ideas,
seem to have an underlying similarity in how they view leadership and heroism. The Old Man and
the Sea by Ernest Hemmingway and Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh both show internal battles
and undeniable fate within characters throughout each novel. In The Old Man and the Sea
Hemmingway uses Santiago, the old Cuban fisherman, to represent internal transformation, renewed
life, triumph, and defeat. Ghosh also represents similar struggles through one of the most prominent
characters, Deeti. Hemmingway and Ghosh seek to first surpass and overcome internal struggle,
secondly show leadership through the toughest situations, and lastly the realization of life itself.
Though many different things can be deciphered through each novel, both try to take the reader
through a journey of tranquility and distress making each character the leaders and heroes that we
see them as. These novels, seemingly nothing alike, both have similar conflicting issues that make
them similar. Overcoming internal struggle is what both novels surround themselves in. Starting
from the beginning in The Old Man and the Sea Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, set sail an
uncertain fishing trip of a lifetime. Internally batting his age, and health it seemed predestined that

that poor soul,' grunted the bodyguard. 'What about the doctor?'" This quote indicates how kind of a
heart Matt has. It introduces guilt for the reader of the man lying there and a little pleasure of
knowing that the main character isn't soulless. It helps add feelings and depth of the understanding
of the reader when reading this dialogue. Another example is when Celia, Matt's guardian is leaving
for work, says,"''What's this?' the woman said.'You're a big boy now, almost six. You know I have to

willpower. 'Stay here. I'll go throw the hysterical fit everyone's expecting. When it gets dark, I'll

Research Question:Does the size of common garden seeds affect the relation of their ideal burial

On my experiment I will planted different types of garden seeds ( which are different sizes ) at
different depths, and with this in mind I will determine how the grow of each seed is affected.
Background Information:
We all consider the amount of sun our plants need to grow healthy. We care about the amount of
water we put to our plants. We always have those subjects in mind but we sometimes forget that
there are other factors to help a plant grow at their fullest. For example, the depth can influence the
plant 's growth ,but because of the different sizes of seeds it's difficult to determine how deep each
seed needs to be planted.
To further understand the relationship between the size of the seed and its proper planting depth you
would have to fully comprehend the term of seed germination process. In short terms seed
germination is the process in which the seed starts developing into what would be a plant .The
process starts off when the the seed starts adapting to its location, which would allow it to start
growing. Later, if the seed is well adapted its hard outer covering or seed coat will break. When
water has been added to the soil and reaches the seed then the seed observes the water, which is
known as imbibition. The water provides needed proteins to the seed allowing it to further continue
its growing process.

the story. This helps the reader see and feel the setting as if they were really there. In addition, the
quote, "Without, the night was cold and wet, but in the small Laburnum Villa the blinds were drawn
and the fire burned brightly." The quote helps to set the stage of the story, while also bringing a
warm, and inviting kind of mood. Saying that the fire burned brightly brings a comforting feeling to

case the lid is removed and is placed on the wrong dish.
6. For the second dish, repeat steps 1–3, adding 2 drops of fertilizer to each seed before covering it
with the paper towel.
