STORYBOARD & ANIMATIC
TASK: Storyboard & Animatic
SOFTWARE: Template/Premiere
DESCRIPTION: Every motion picture will begin with the storyboarding process. Using
the template provided on the hub (www.ctklms.com) you are required
to visualise each key shot and scene within your one-minute trailer. You
must discuss what the camera is doing in terms of movement or shot
type (this is very important). An animatic helps you to work out the
length of each shot and where to place captions. Using Adobe
Premiere, you will cut up an existing trailer (given to you by your
teacher) and cut/mark where there is a change in shot. You can then
add up how many drawn storyboard frames you will need to design,
and then place over the existing trailer. This will mark out the rough
structure of your own trailer.
OBJECTIVE: To select trailer shot types and work out pacing/length of shot

Storyboarding
Storyboards aregraphic organizers in the form of illustrationsor images, which aredisplayed in a sequence for
the purpose of pre-visualizinga motion picture. Storyboardingis a useful tool for getting students to plan and
visualizetheir ideas, ensuringthey make use of a variety of shots and angles.
Film
A filmstoryboard is essentially a filmcomic.Produced in pre-production, ithelps filmdirectors visualizethe
scenes and find potential problems before they occur.Often storyboards includearrows or instructionsthat
indicatemovement, and provide a visual layoutof events through the camera lens. Most technical filmcraft
details can be efficiently described either in picture, or text.
Animatic
In filmand special effects work, the storyboardingstagemay be followed by simplified mock-ups called
"animatics"to give a better idea of how the scene will feel with motion and timing. At its simplest,an animatic
is a series of still images edited together and displayed in sequence. More commonly, a rough dialogueand/or
rough sound track is added to the sequence of still storyboard images. This allows directors to work out
camera positioning, shotlists and timing issues.Often storyboards includezooms and pans to simulatecamera
movement. This will highlighttheneed to either includeor cut shots.
Creation
Storyboards can be created by hand drawingor digitally on the computer. If drawingby hand, the firststep is
to create or download a storyboard template. These look much likea blank comic strip, with spacefor
comments and dialogue.
Each storyboard frame must include:
1. Type of Camera Shot/Angle/Movement
2. Frame/Shot number
3. Editing notes - SFX/Music/Dialogue.
