I watched the third presidential debate on Wednesday, October 19, at 8 pm. Chris Wallace
moderated the debate between the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee
Donald Trump. The purpose of the debate was to allow for both candidates to be compared side by
side in order to determine who would be a better candidate to become the president of the United
States.
In general, the debate was not unlike any other presidential debate. The candidates did their best to
avoid answering questions that made them look bad by responding with an answer to a different

The first way they make this possible is to groom and primp their image. Theodore White "thought
that Kennedy benefited because his image on television was "crisp"; Nixon's–– light–colored suit,
wrong makeup, bad posture–– was "fuzzed (Source C)." He is saying that Kennedy acknowledged
the fact that his appearance made a big difference in how the people looked at him and he made sure
that he was up to par with his looks. Another way they make their appearance look better in
comparison is to draw attention away from themselves and attack their opponent's character. This

she quickly recovered. She then began to get to the real topic of the job issues in the United States.

the speaker should emphasize the points with a tone that is different from the rest of the speech to
catch the audience's attention. Repetition in speeches can also help to create a dramatic punch or
closing to the speech. The speaker can repeat a summary of information that was presented at the
beginning once again at the end of the speech to clarify the main points so the audience is aware of

The Republican Presidential Debate was, as always, an intriguing experience for its viewers.
America has found itself in the odd position of having nine presidential candidates from the
Republican Party. Leaving politics (mostly) aside, it became clear that most of these candidates rely
on inspiring and capitalizing on the fears of their voters. This conclusion is drawn from the fact that
these candidates are poor seemingly poor communicators. They are unfocused and unoriginal with
their platforms. The only defining characteristics are their various levels of confidence, poise, and
their body movements. As previously mentioned, the candidates lacked focus. A common theme at
the debate was their indirect responses. When asked a question, the candidates would engage in a
monologue criticizing the Democratic Party (popular targets were Hillary Clinton and Barack
Obama). The candidates frequently went over their allotted response time without offering a
substantive response to questions asked of them. Marco Rubio was especially guilty of this, as
evidenced by moderators chiding him for being off topic. When asked of the country's financial

There was a somewhat organized flow for these rants. The candidates started with how horrible the
Democrats were, especially Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. They then progressed to how the
military needed to be rebuilt and which one loved the military more. Then they reached personal

It's evident that this has been one of the most divided and controversial presidential elections
starting from the primaries all the way to the first and second presidential debates. Whether we
agree with the candidate's political views and methods of approaching the American people, and

One of the things that Hillary is criticized the most, as it was pointed out by Trump in the recent

After viewing the circus acts that were called the 1st presidential debate and the vice–presidential
debate that aired earlier in the month, my expectations for the 2nd debate were not too high.
Unfortunately my even my low expectations were not met and I felt as though there was not a large
enough improvement during this debate to have made any difference from the first one. While we
saw some improvement in terms of candidate behavior, the rest of the debate was severely lacking
in substance. Questions posed by the audience were shallow, then made even more so by the follow
up questions from the moderators. On the topic of moderators, there appears to be a continuing
theme of their lack of effectiveness that has carried throughout all of the debates including this one.
Leading up to the 2nd debate we have seen the results of having two candidates with political views
on complete opposite poles and personalities to match. The events of the first debate can easily be
described as throwing water into a pot of hot oil and just watching it happen. Throughout the debate
we had seen Donald Trump repeatedly interrupt and attempt to interject as Hillary Clinton was
speaking in an effort to defend himself. However this interruptions were more of a nuisance,
especially due to most of them being composed of the words 'no' and 'not true'. Fortunately for the

Perception's Configuration of Reality: 45th Presidential Debate Jay Van Bavel's 2016 article
addresses an important and relevant issue: voters' deeply divided perceptions of presidential
candidates. According to Bavel, approximately 70 million viewers tuned in to watch the final
presidential debate on October 19, 2016. In theory, one would be valid in assuming that while
processing such an event, everyone should be experiencing the same reality–all are watching the
same debate, hearing the same words said by the same people. Strangely, however, this is not the
case: in reality, Republicans and Democrats concluded the debates with drastically separate
conclusions on the candidates. According to a CNN poll referenced to within Bavel's article, Hillary

The Vice Presidential Debate took place at Longwood University located in Farmville, Virginia
moderated by, Elaine Quijano. Senator Tim Kaine and Governor Mike Pence both sat at a table with
Quijano. The debate consisted of 9 segments, each 10 minutes in length and 2 minutes for each
candidate to respond. Topics discussed in this debate include questions about Donald Trump's
temperament, the economy, Social Security, police and race relations, nuclear weapons, abortion and

1. The presidential campaign of 2016 is one that is highly debated, historical, and one that created

I did find the constant change of subjects quite interesting because they ranged from economics to
climate change to race to even broad questions like will you accept the outcome of the election.
They weren't focused on just one topic, it was widely ranged which was very different than our class
debate set–up, but at the same time they were at times, both able to answer the question they were

The use of twitter by both the viewers and the candidates are geared toward one particular goal: to
try to change the mind of voters. By candidates operating on Twitter they possess the ability to make

The event that I would like to analyze is a First Democratic Presidential Debate 2016 by CNN that
was held on 10–13–2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was the first occasion where all candidates
from the Democratic party were together on the same stage. They were asked question about their
promises made to electorate and their future plants if they will get elected, but were also asked about

Jim Webb (Former U.S. Senator from Virginia) keep him self very tight. Being a soldier in the past,
you could seу his control over his words and emotions. His face did not portray anything and only
the tone of his voice could give the audience an idea about his emotional connection to the topic.
Martin O'Malley tried to control himself, but his anger and disagreement was coming out through
his body language. When he heard something with what he strongly disagreed, you would see his
face getting tense, his eyes glancing from side to side and shaking hand. He found it hard to wait for
his turn and it seemed that he wanted to fight the rest of the candidates for statements with which he
did not agree. Hillary Clinton looked very familiar with what was happening on stage. She was not
put of by the harsh question and always kept energetic and positive answering any question. She
radiated her energy into the audience, and got audiences appreciation for that. She was standing still
during the debate, her facial emotions where the ones portraying everything she wanted to say or
display to the audience. During this debate one of the most interesting things that I mentioned was
the way how the candidates played for the audience. When one of the candidates would say a
statement for which the crowd would applause, other candidates would try and straightaway

A constructive national debate is something that is quite important to the functioning of the
American system of democracy. A simple definition of democracy offered by the Merriam–Webster
dictionary is that democracy is "a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting"
(Merriam–Webster). Now, at a time of heightened awareness from many American people, the
political debates in this country don't seem to be providing them with good cogent arguments.
Instead they are filled with fallacies and many falsehoods. In this essay I argue that the presidential
debate system is currently not living up to its potential, and I will focus specifically on Republican
primary debate that took place at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California. In doing so, I will
argue that the main flaws in this cycle's presidential primary debates were the amount of fallacies
used, as structure used as well as provide some counter–arguments to my claims. In order to have a
government that is run by people; specifically, people that must choose a candidate to vote for, its
seems fit that it would be important that there be adequate means of illustrating each candidate's
positions on all of the issues that the constituents care about. Presidential debates are the means of
showcasing a candidates' policies to the nation and at the same time they allow the citizens in the
democratic society to make a more informed decision about their vote than they otherwise would
have without a debate.

the most important quality of a president, and this argument is shown throughout the debate through
both the candidate's choice to undermine each other's character. Though it seems as if both

Because both presidential hopefuls use the same strategy over and over, does it continue to still be
affective on the audience. Well, looking at the way that both Hillary and Trump had made many
arguments based on their opinion of the audience, it goes to show that they don't hold the audience
in the highest respect; yet the audience would still voice their opinions on their candidate through
their applause. Knowing that the American people like to be entertained it is shown through both

In my opinion, the debate and the questions were well structured; however, both of the candidates

According to Independent Journal Review's Director of Viral Media, Kyle Becker, Lester Holt
seemed to be absent from a large majority of the debate leaving the candidates to pettily bicker and
waste valuable debate time. He did, however, decide to be a fact–checking moderator 50 minutes
into the debate. Holt did not let Trump get away with not "specifically" answering his questions and
with answering his questions with statements that were not true. He fact checked Donald Trump 4
times but while letting Hillary Clinton say whatever she liked without interruption." While this
statement makes Holt appear to look bias and unfair, Mrs. Clinton was 'fact checked' throughout the
debate and was deemed 100% truthful during Monday evening's debate which leaves little room for
corrections and interruptions. Megan Garber, a staff writer for The Atlantic, says, "To do well, Holt
would need to ask good questions...to find a happy middle between fact–checking the candidates in
real time and letting them... talk–to the public, and to each other. [Not] interrupting the debaters,
challenging their assertions, [or] 'Lauering'... were elements of the delicate balance Holt needed to
strike... He did a great job." Finding a perfect balance between fact–checking and allowing the
candidates to do the fact–checking, being impartial, and asking good questions is impossible
because the media all want to see different things and you can't expect the man to please everyone.

The Debate Over Presidential Debates
What topics are labeled important enough to be talked about during presidential debates? Topics
such as terrorism and national security; the economy; jobs and employment; and the Affordable
Care Act and Healthcare all managed to be the center of attention during all debates. What topics
were almost entirely ignored? Topics such as gun policy; social issues like LGBT rights and
abortion; and the environment and climate change were put to the side to instead talk about Hillary
Clinton's email scandal or the sexual assault charges brought up against Donald Trump. While
terrorism and national security; the economy; jobs and employment; and the Affordable Care Act
and Healthcare are all very important topics, but one topic that was ignored and should have been at
the forefront of the debate was climate change.
Issues like renewable energy, hydraulic fracking, anthropogenic greenhouse gases, and the Paris
Agreement should have been hot topics during the three presidential debates. So why were they not?
Both the Democrats and Republicans seemed to be more concerned with trying to make the

The rise of popularity in presidential television debates leads one to the question of it having a
positive and or negative impact on candidates campaigns. Television allowed people to see the
debate in a new perspective, visually, however it idolizes and highlights candidates to make them
seem as if they are celebrities, instead of focusing on their intellect and topics to improve the nation.

Lester Holt's View of the First Presidential Debate This first presidential debate was chaos! The two
candidates were just screaming over one another, and I couldn't hear myself think! The night started
out normal, or as normal as a debate is supposed to be. The two candidates seemed composed for a
small period of time while acting like actual adults running for president. Unfortunately, when the
first question about the economy was asked, Former Secretary Clinton decided to take a jab at Mr.
Trump using a quote he had said about a potential real estate market crash in 2006. She quoted that

me furious because I was the one who actually decided to do research on a controversial topic

The main goal of this article was to discover if the televised presidential debates increased the
amount of knowledge of campaign issues amongst uneducated voters. One of the downfalls of this
campaign overall, was that it seemed too artificial and staged to some of the voters. It was during
this election, that many print media providers were called out for simply focusing on the "horse

I was not able to watch the debate the day it took place, however I did watch the entire debate online
a few days after. It has been extremely difficult for me to watch this debate as well as the

During his whole presentation, Trump have shown countless hand gestures while he is speaking. His
hand gestures seem to go with the rhymes of his listings or when he say things that seem to be
important slowly. For example, one of the time would be him yellowing out "a fifty billion dollar,"

I sat down on my couch on the crisp night of September, 26th, it was very much like the calm before

make. Options are always available when someone has to make a decision. In choosing a President
for our country, we have to look at our candidates and decide which ones beliefs can help the

we had numerous candidates, the only two that were allowed to participate in the debates was Vice

The first debate was held at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. There was no clear and

percent of the people believed that Gore had won, while thirty–nine percent believed it was Bush.

While the second debate at Wake Forest University was the least exciting and was gone over very
