ENGL/LLD 100A (adapted from S. Berghoff)
Outline for Rhetorical Analysis Assignment
I. INTRODUCTION
a. What is rhetoric, in general? Why/how do writers use
rhetorical writing
strategies to achieve their purpose? Provide a general /brief
explanation
of this.
b. What is rhetorical analysis? What is the purpose of the
Rhetorical
Analysis (RA) assignment?
c. Introduce the article you are analyzing:
1- Why did you choose this article? (Your discourse
community)
2- What is the full title of the article?
3- Who is the author?
4- When was it written?
5- Where was it first published?
6- Who is the intended audience? Describe the discourse
community
the paper was written for—connect this to your discourse
community
7- What is the author’s purpose in producing this piece of
writing? What
does he/she want to achieve? What do you think the author
wants
the reader to think or do after reading this paper? (to inform, to
persuade, etc.)
d. Thesis/Preview Statement: Indicate the rhetorical strategies
you will
discuss in the rest of this RA. Strategies include style, tone,
organization, use of rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, pathos),
development of ideas (narration, description, exemplification,
process
analysis, cause and effect analysis, comparison and contrast,
definition,
classification and/or division, etc. ), flow/transitions,
presentation/format, etc. (look at the handout on “Framework
for
Analyzing Genres and Rhetorical Strategies.”) Connect this to
your
evaluation of the article and to your larger goal: to understand
how
authors can use rhetoric effectively to achieve their purposes.
2
II. ANALYSIS OF RHETORICAL STRATEGIES (details of the
strategies
mentioned in “d” above)
You will begin each paragraph with a topic sentence, and the
paragraph will have a
unified focus. You should write one or more paragraphs (use
more than one if you have
multiple detailed examples of a particular appeal or strategy) on
each of the rhetorical
strategies you mentioned in the introduction. Here is how you
should develop your
paragraphs:
a. Define the rhetorical strategy you will be discussing in that
paragraph (you can
quote or paraphrase from your course readings). You must
define each appeal or
strategy clearly before discussing specific examples of it.
b. Quote or paraphrase 2-3 examples from the document that
illustrate the author’s
use of the strategy or appeal
c. Explain how and why the examples illustrate the strategy or
appeal and how they
have contributed to the author’s purpose in the article
d. Explain how this particular appeal or strategy can help all
authors make their points
and persuade audiences effectively
Tip: Treat each body section like a mini-essay within your
larger paper. If you follow
the steps listed above, you will see that you have a clear intro
(introduce the rhetorical
appeal or strategy), body (show examples of it and explain how
they illustrate the
appeal or strategy), and conclusion (connect the use of the
appeal or strategy to the
author’s purpose; draw final conclusion based on how this
author uses the appeal or
strategy, explaining why/how using it can help all authors
achieve their purposes).
III. CONCLUSION
(a.) Bring your focus back to the real main subject here:
effective rhetoric
(b.) Summarize briefly the main points of the analysis: go over
the main
appeals and strategies you have analyzed, saying which ones
were
particularly effective
(c.) Explain the significance of your analysis as you consider
the following:
1. What conclusions can you draw, based on your analysis of
this
particular article, about the role in general of rhetorical appeals
and
strategies in producing clear communication through writing?
2. What changes would you recommend to this author to better
achieve
his/her purpose?
3
FORMATTING:
Ø 1 inch margins (left/right; top/bottom), 12-point Times New
Roman font
Ø Use section headings and subheadings for the sections to
guide the reader
Ø Use clear headings for each section of your essay—especially
for introduction,
individual body sections (for example, you would need separate
headings for Ethos,
Logos, Narration, Cause and Effect, Exemplification), and
conclusion (see RA
Sample Format handout for clear example of layout and
headings)
Ø 1.5 line spacing for initial drafts (including your final in-
semester draft)
Ø Single spacing for the final draft that will go in your portfolio
at the end of the
semester
Ø Single space between paragraphs; double space between
individual body sections
(between, for example, your discussion of Ethos and Pathos, or
Logos and Ethos—
each of which should have a separate heading and be its own
section within your
larger Analysis of Rhetorical Appeals section)
Ø Block paragraph style; don’t indent paragraphs (keep them
flush with left margin)
Ø See assignment sheet for word count for initial drafts
Ø About 1750 words for final draft that will go in your portfolio
at semester’s end
Ø Number your pages

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In this assignment, you will use the perspective grid and the
perspective selection tool to draw objects in perspective.
You will be designing a 3D cubic box with 2 different artworks.
One on the left plane and one on the right plane. You are
required to create 2 different artworks to use to snap on the left
and right planes and follow the requirements below.

1. Click here to watch a short tutorial on how to build the
perspective assignment's "box". (Raser)
2. Visual examples can be found in attached PDF here.
3. Linked here is a great Adobe tutorial on creating abstract
Meshwork. A fun & informative learning tool!
As things do get a little tricky when trying to create artwork on
the perspective grid itself, I've outlined one of
the best solutions below.
1. Create an open rectangle on the plane (side of the perspective
box) you want to use. Make this box without a fill
color, but with a black 1pt stroke so you can see it.
2. Apply the rectangle to the perspective grid.
3. Place the gradient mesh behind (or "under" in the layers
panel) the rectangle and select both objects at the same
time.
4. Choose Object > Envelope Distort > make with Top Object.
5. Make sure to not have any "background shapes" chosen or
they will get distorted as well.
Lastly, this video gives a great step-by-step how-to for mapping
your artwork or text to your perspective grid as well:

PROJECT 2: LOGO ASSIGNMENT
OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this project is to demonstrate your
understanding of the following course concepts:
1. X
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Your logo or brand has got to be much more than just a
corporate badge or a simple recognizable, memorable mark. It
needs to reflect who you are, what your business is and even
how you work. The logo designer’s creativity and
imagination are the integral parts in the logo design process, the
client can describe what they want, and the designer
has to visualize it. He or she has to create a high impact
creative brand that has to not only work on screen, but also for
a variety of media, like posters, signage, letterheads and even
for apparel.
Your task is to design a logo for your own organization to use
for a letterhead (8.5” x 11”), business cards (3.5” x 2”), a
poster (Poster size = 24" X 36" with your logo sized at 4” x 6”),
and a website (Logo sized at 1.5” x 2” on a webpage
layout sized 15" X 10"). The sizes are suggested size, which can
be modified as appropriate. You may pick any type of
business or organization to create the design of your logo using
Adobe Illustrator (CS5 or Higher). You are required to
follow the requirements below. You will be submitting one file
that contains multiple (4) artboards based on the above
sizes.
For further study in preparation for creating your logo designs,
consider reading feedback from some of today's design
leaders on what not to do, when creating a logo!

icons on your own to use in your diagram (as in the "thumbs
up" icon from this week’s tutorial).
5. Apply transforming objects (resize, rotate, reflect, shear,
duplicate, copy/paste, etc.)
6. Save file as .pdf and submit both .ai and .pdf files
Resource(s):
Examples that you may use as a guideline for the assignment:

50 Design Inspirations for 8 types of Infographic
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Please submit your completed assignment to your Assignments

1 ENGLLLD 100A (adapted from S. Berghoff) .docx

  • 1. 1 ENGL/LLD 100A (adapted from S. Berghoff) Outline for Rhetorical Analysis Assignment I. INTRODUCTION a. What is rhetoric, in general? Why/how do writers use rhetorical writing strategies to achieve their purpose? Provide a general /brief explanation of this. b. What is rhetorical analysis? What is the purpose of the Rhetorical Analysis (RA) assignment? c. Introduce the article you are analyzing: 1- Why did you choose this article? (Your discourse community) 2- What is the full title of the article? 3- Who is the author? 4- When was it written? 5- Where was it first published? 6- Who is the intended audience? Describe the discourse community the paper was written for—connect this to your discourse community
  • 2. 7- What is the author’s purpose in producing this piece of writing? What does he/she want to achieve? What do you think the author wants the reader to think or do after reading this paper? (to inform, to persuade, etc.) d. Thesis/Preview Statement: Indicate the rhetorical strategies you will discuss in the rest of this RA. Strategies include style, tone, organization, use of rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, pathos), development of ideas (narration, description, exemplification, process analysis, cause and effect analysis, comparison and contrast, definition, classification and/or division, etc. ), flow/transitions, presentation/format, etc. (look at the handout on “Framework for Analyzing Genres and Rhetorical Strategies.”) Connect this to your evaluation of the article and to your larger goal: to understand how authors can use rhetoric effectively to achieve their purposes. 2 II. ANALYSIS OF RHETORICAL STRATEGIES (details of the strategies
  • 3. mentioned in “d” above) You will begin each paragraph with a topic sentence, and the paragraph will have a unified focus. You should write one or more paragraphs (use more than one if you have multiple detailed examples of a particular appeal or strategy) on each of the rhetorical strategies you mentioned in the introduction. Here is how you should develop your paragraphs: a. Define the rhetorical strategy you will be discussing in that paragraph (you can quote or paraphrase from your course readings). You must define each appeal or strategy clearly before discussing specific examples of it. b. Quote or paraphrase 2-3 examples from the document that illustrate the author’s use of the strategy or appeal c. Explain how and why the examples illustrate the strategy or appeal and how they have contributed to the author’s purpose in the article d. Explain how this particular appeal or strategy can help all authors make their points and persuade audiences effectively Tip: Treat each body section like a mini-essay within your larger paper. If you follow the steps listed above, you will see that you have a clear intro (introduce the rhetorical appeal or strategy), body (show examples of it and explain how
  • 4. they illustrate the appeal or strategy), and conclusion (connect the use of the appeal or strategy to the author’s purpose; draw final conclusion based on how this author uses the appeal or strategy, explaining why/how using it can help all authors achieve their purposes). III. CONCLUSION (a.) Bring your focus back to the real main subject here: effective rhetoric (b.) Summarize briefly the main points of the analysis: go over the main appeals and strategies you have analyzed, saying which ones were particularly effective (c.) Explain the significance of your analysis as you consider the following: 1. What conclusions can you draw, based on your analysis of this particular article, about the role in general of rhetorical appeals and strategies in producing clear communication through writing? 2. What changes would you recommend to this author to better achieve his/her purpose? 3
  • 5. FORMATTING: Ø 1 inch margins (left/right; top/bottom), 12-point Times New Roman font Ø Use section headings and subheadings for the sections to guide the reader Ø Use clear headings for each section of your essay—especially for introduction, individual body sections (for example, you would need separate headings for Ethos, Logos, Narration, Cause and Effect, Exemplification), and conclusion (see RA Sample Format handout for clear example of layout and headings) Ø 1.5 line spacing for initial drafts (including your final in- semester draft) Ø Single spacing for the final draft that will go in your portfolio at the end of the semester Ø Single space between paragraphs; double space between individual body sections (between, for example, your discussion of Ethos and Pathos, or Logos and Ethos— each of which should have a separate heading and be its own section within your larger Analysis of Rhetorical Appeals section) Ø Block paragraph style; don’t indent paragraphs (keep them flush with left margin) Ø See assignment sheet for word count for initial drafts
  • 6. Ø About 1750 words for final draft that will go in your portfolio at semester’s end Ø Number your pages 2/27/20, 12:40 AMProject 3: Perspective Assignment - CMST 320 6381 Illustration Graphics (2202) - UMGC Learning Management System Page 1 of 5https://learn.umuc.edu/d2l/lms/dropbox/user/folder_submit_fil es.d2l?db=916832&grpid=0&isprv=0&bp=0&ou=442037 Assignments Project 3: Perspec!ve Assignment Project 3: Perspec!ve Assignment Hide Assignment Informa!on Instruc!ons CMST … Robin Mcclain Course Home Content Discussions Assignments ClasslistMy Tools Resources Help PROJECT 2 UMGC > CMST 320 > ILLUSTRATION GRAPHICS PROJECT 2: LOGO ASSIGNMENT
  • 7. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this project is to demonstrate your understanding of the following course concepts: 1. X PROJECT DESCRIPTION In this assignment, you will use the perspective grid and the perspective selection tool to draw objects in perspective. You will be designing a 3D cubic box with 2 different artworks. One on the left plane and one on the right plane. You are required to create 2 different artworks to use to snap on the left and right planes and follow the requirements below. https://learn.umuc.edu/d2l/lms/dropbox/user/folders_list.d2l?ou =442037 javascript:// https://learn.umuc.edu/d2l/home/442037 https://learn.umuc.edu/d2l/lp/ouHome/defaultHome.d2l https://learn.umuc.edu/d2l/home/442037 https://learn.umuc.edu/d2l/le/content/442037/Home https://learn.umuc.edu/d2l/le/442037/discussions/List https://learn.umuc.edu/d2l/lms/dropbox/dropbox.d2l?ou=442037 https://learn.umuc.edu/d2l/lms/classlist/classlist.d2l?ou=442037 XXIV 2/27/20, 12:40 AMProject 3: Perspective Assignment - CMST 320 6381 Illustration Graphics (2202) - UMGC Learning Management System

Click here to watch a short tutorial on how to build the perspective assignment's "box". (Raser) 2. Visual examples can be found in attached PDF here. 3. Linked here is a great Adobe tutorial on creating abstract Meshwork. A fun & informative learning tool! As things do get a little tricky when trying to create artwork on the perspective grid itself, I've outlined one of the best solutions below. 1. Create an open rectangle on the plane (side of the perspective box) you want to use. Make this box without a fill color, but with a black 1pt stroke so you can see it. 2. Apply the rectangle to the perspective grid. 3. Place the gradient mesh behind (or "under" in the layers panel) the rectangle and select both objects at the same time. 4. Choose Object > Envelope Distort > make with Top Object. 5. Make sure to not have any "background shapes" chosen or they will get distorted as well. Lastly, this video gives a great step-by-step how-to for mapping your artwork or text to your perspective grid as well:
  • 9. http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-illustrator-cs5/mapping-flat- artwork-to-the-perspective-grid/. WEB PAGE HAS ERROR MESSAGE -SA PROJECT REQUIREMENTS 1. Use a recent version of Adobe Illustrator. 2. Use perspec!ve grid to create a "box" that has at least 2 planes to build artwork on. 3. Use perspec!ve selection tool to select appropriate planes to change and build. 4. Left panel artwork must be created using Envelopes Warp tool. 5. Right panel artwork must be created using (Gradient) Mesh tool. 6. Snap artwork on le" panel (keeping proper perspective with your 3D box). 7. Snap artwork on right panel (keeping proper perspective with your 3D box). 8. Save file as .pdf and submit both .ai and .pdf files. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS Please submit your completed paper to your Assignments Folder in our CMST 320 LEO Classroom before the due date.

  • 22. Your logo or brand has got to be much more than just a corporate badge or a simple recognizable, memorable mark. It needs to reflect who you are, what your business is and even how you work. The logo designer’s creativity and imagination are the integral parts in the logo design process, the client can describe what they want, and the designer has to visualize it. He or she has to create a high impact creative brand that has to not only work on screen, but also for a variety of media, like posters, signage, letterheads and even for apparel. Your task is to design a logo for your own organization to use for a letterhead (8.5” x 11”), business cards (3.5” x 2”), a poster (Poster size = 24" X 36" with your logo sized at 4” x 6”), and a website (Logo sized at 1.5” x 2” on a webpage layout sized 15" X 10"). The sizes are suggested size, which can be modified as appropriate. You may pick any type of business or organization to create the design of your logo using Adobe Illustrator (CS5 or Higher). You are required to follow the requirements below. You will be submitting one file that contains multiple (4) artboards based on the above sizes. For further study in preparation for creating your logo designs, consider reading feedback from some of today's design
