Sec 1 Unit 3
Lesson 6:
Forest Conservation
2. Thinking questions
•What can we do to reduce
deforestation?
•How is Deforestation managed
in the Amazon and Singapore?
3. What is conservation?
•Protecting the environment and
its natural resources from harm.
•Involves maintenance, restoration
and management of resources.
•Prevent permanent depletion of
resources.
5. Protection of forested areas
• Setting laws to protect an area.
• Strong penalties (heavy fines) for people /
companies who violate the law.
• Central Amazon Conservation Complex.
▫ Largest protected area in the Amazon Basin.
▫ Varying degrees of protection within the area.
▫ Covers 60,000 Sq Km (85 times the size of
SGP)
6. Reforestation
• Planting of trees in areas where original
forest has been cleared.
• Normally involves non-profit
organisations, companies and local
communities.
• Takes a long time, over 15 years for a
canopy layer to form.
7. Controlled Logging
• Government controls the amount of
logging allowed in the area.
• Logging licence issued with a cap on the
amount of trees harvested.
• Gives the land more time to recover.
• Together with fines / imprisonment, will
work to slow down deforestation.
8. Controlled Logging ‘cont
•Selective logging program reduces
the need for unnecessary
deforestation.
•Loggers educated on the species
that are of value and trained on
selective logging.
9. Public Education
• Education on the importance of the
rainforest for the public.
• Campaigns against deforestation to
raise awareness.
• Promoting Eco-tourism to enhance
awareness and re-invest money
earned into conservation efforts.
11. Protection of forested area
• Use of laws to protect remaining forest
areas
▫ Parks and Trees Act 2005.
• Laws with guidelines for visitors to the
nature reserves to minimise disturbance to
the rainforest.
• Protection for Nature Reserves and Water
Catchment areas.
12.
13. Reforestation
• Reforestation projects carried out to improve the
condition of existing forests.
• Nparks working with NGO like Nature Society
Singapore (NSS) and Corporation sponsors like
Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation
Limited (HSBC).
• Replanting of Meranti Laut in Botanic Gardens
to allow for gradual replacement.
14. Public Education
• Promote understanding of the forests
▫ Increase awareness, understanding and
appreciation through outreach programs
▫ Promote volunteerism through
biodiversity interest groups
▫ Incorporation of conservation into
school curriculum.
15. Benefits and Challenges
•In your groups, complete the
analysis card that you are given.
•You can use the information on
Pg 115 to help.
•Select a presenter who will
present your findings to the
class.
20. Summary
• Forests are vital to human survival on
earth.
• Forests provide natural resources for
us.
• Deforestation brings about large scale
impact and hidden costs.
• Without proper management, we will
lose all our rainforests very rapidly.
21. Let’s do a fun exercise
•Complete Unit 3 Ex 9
▫ Prepare the words for a simple test
next lesson.
▫ Read the Key terms on Pg 116-117 to
prepare for the test.
