In 1995 the law creating the Public Arts Trust was adopted to replace the County’s percent-for-art program which had been repealed in the early 1990s. That new law- Chapter 8 of the Montgomery County Code , Article 6, Works in Public Architecture - directs the County Council to consider appropriating 0.05% of the County’s annual capital budget for public art each year. The county eleted to do so through the establishment of the Public Arts Trust.
The Trust, a collaboration between the Arts and Humanities Council and the County Department of Recreation is administered by AHCMC and guided by a Steering Committee comprised of members of DGS, DOT, Recreation, HUD, MNCPPC, MNCPPC-Parks and chaired by a member of the AHCMC Board. Public Arts Trust Steering (PATSC) Chair Elanor Choi, BELL Architects. The PATSC advocates for community awareness of public art and its significance to placemaking and community identity, and engages with a variety of partners and collaborators that include the visual arts community, non profit arts organizations, other county agencies and private partnerships.
Over the past 30 years AHCMC has grown the collection that now consists of over 900 works in various media
This past spring, we launched a call to Montgomery County visual artists whose work consist on public art on walls
This was done in conjunction with Simon Developers, a private international company that has recently completed the Clarksburg Premium Outlets Mall
32 submissions, there are currently 8 semi-finalists for the Clarksburg project, five of which will install wall art of all mediums the new outlet mall.
We intend to re-open wall artist roster for more entries in preparation for future opportunities.
