England colonies, was on the coast, it was a bustling sea port. There was competition for work,

there to avoid the summons to London he had received from the Archbishop Laud to answer for his
behavior in continuing as a Puritan minister despite the reforms King Charles had placed banishing

1634 not knowing the trials to come, literally and figuratively (37). Anne Hutchinson would, within
the years leading up to her trial, conduct weekly meetings in her home that attracted many

who would replace Winthrop as colonial governor temporarily; John Wheelwright, another
Antinomian that would be banished from the colony for his radical sermons; and Roger Williams, a

Strong religious views that coincided with a reverence for family and accountability for one's own
actions made for a strict lifestyle in the colony. The minister was considered to be the most
important man within the community. To have spoken out or fallen asleep during a four hour sermon

The Virginia colonists on the other hand, were unable to achieve this sense of community, as a result
of the high mortality rate in the colony. Many complications arose among the people because of this.
For example, since the ratio between men and women was three to one, many spouses, especially

The Massachusetts Bay colony and Virginia had a sundry amount of differences as well as
similarities. Each of these colonies was founded upon different ways of living. Digging deeper, there
are many more differences about these colonies than there are similarities. Although both colonies
eventually experienced the help of the natives, each colony set separate rules and laws for
themselves. Virginia is more geographically spread out and more focused on obtaining gold for
personal profit, whereas Massachusetts is more of a united, small farmed colony that focused more
on the efforts for religious freedom.
John Rolfe was an English settler who based the voyage to America simply on the growth of
tobacco. Rolfe's crew, along with many other young men, traveled to Virginia in 1609 to search for
gold. When the ship reached on the shore, all that was seen was sandy beaches and swampy
marshes. Neither of which helped with the growth of the major cash crop. Even after the valiant
attempts to scrounge for gold, there was no success.With the large amount of crops that Virginia
grew, the colony needed to expand west into new land for more room to grow crops. At this time

the family fortune because of the common practice of primogeniture. Initially believing they would

colonists had left England to flee religious persecution, they continued with the persecution of other
religions in their own colony. Nathaniel Ward states, "He that is willing to tolerate any religion, or
