1. Codes and conventions of a Music
Video, Magazine Advert and
Digipak

2. Music Video
Purpose of the music video is
to promote the artist and
single. Create a star image for
the artist/band. It is also
used to show a meaning
behind the song.
They are using 3-4
minutes long including
live performances, a
narrative and other
affects which can
include animation.
Performance in videos
include shots of the artist
singing, this can be on a live
stage or even a really unusual
place with the artist singing
the lyrics.
Some music videos are said
to spectacle this meaning
they address the audience
and interact with them.
Narrative in videos can
include a mini film with a
beginning middle and end,
they often relate to the lyrics.
It can also involve clips from
film if used as promotion.
Music videos can also be
thematic where there
are common
images/stories portrayed
depending on the genre
of the music video.
Symbolic representation
can also be used in music
videos such as lighting to set
a mood, props to hint to the
story or lyrics. This can be a
build up of meanings.
Other conventions of a music
video can include cutting the
clips in rhythm with the music,
intercutting between
performance, images and story.
A variety of camera use such as
hand held cameras, changes in
the colors.
Can break the use of continuity
editing with a range of editing
cuts.
Many digital effects are also
used to represent the video and
expand on it being basic.
3. Magazine Advert
Magazine adverts are
used to promote the
artist and album/single
being sold. It also is
meant to be eye catching
and appeal to the
audience who are
targeted.
Codes and conventions of a magazine advert
include:
• Artist name
• Album/song name
• Image of the single cover/album cover
• Image of the artist
• Release date
• Where you can purchase it
• Brief information on album
• Record label name/logo
• Reviews on the album/single.
• Social media links
• Tour dates
• Font, font style and colour all link and
consistent.
4. Digipak
Digipaks are a package
for a CD/DVD.
Usually has a hard/card
outer packaging.
They are usually used for
special or limited editions
versions.
They usually
have folds
meaning it is
able to cold into
a small square
with different
parts.
The front stands out and
tend to have a large eye
catching picture on it.
The title is also found on
the front cover and has
an image related to the
album, single, artist or
band.
The back usually
has a track list,
barcode, brief
information on
the album/artist,
the artist name
and the record
label logo.
Inside the digipak is
normally the CD for the
package, along with more
photographs related to
the artist or album. It
also has more
information and
sometime a leaflet or
booklet with album and
artist information inside.
It can also include a
message from the
artist/band, tour dates
and lyrics.
