Gill Kirkup (Institute of Educational Technology Open University, Milton Keynes): In Universities we are busy dealing with the impact of elearning tools and pedagogies on our students and our staff and our knowledge domains. We know that elearning can create opportunities; we worry that it also creates barriers. But who benefits and who is disadvantaged is not yet clear. In this new higher education landscape the complexities of gender can be overlooked because our attention is fully occupied with new structures, technologies, practices, markets, and too few resources. Women students, on the other hand, don’t cause us worry; overall they appear to be performing well. However, it is possible to lose the gender equality gains that have been achieved in the last thirty years in the complexities of change. In this lecture I will argue that the new elearning landscape needs to be examined through the lens of gender. I will review what is known about women’s access to, and use of the technologies of elearning, and relate this to what we know about gender and higher education. I will discuss how gender mainstreaming principles can be integrated into good practices in the design and delivery of elearning, to increase the opportunities for all.

The session presents gender analysis tools that can be used during project design, implementation and evaluation. The gender analysis tools will help to make the development intervention gender sensitive, so that the benefits of project reach both women and men.

Preprint @ http://tinyurl.com/bsp7bg, World Conference on Computers in Education Abstract: Usual processes for pursuing education excellence in a graduate program are candidate selection, coursework, research, and thesis defense. In this paper, we present a complementary approach: the growing of a peer review culture among graduate students. We instruct first-year masters’ and doctoral students on principles for preparing a thesis proposal. Students present their proposals in collective discussion sessions with feedback from professors. The students then submit their proposals through a web interface and are instructed on the role they will play next – of anonymous referees of their peers’ proposals. The referee reports and general statistics are made available to all participating students and advisors. Updated proposals are submitted to an annual workshop open to all participating students and advisors. About 60 students take part in this annual series of seminars with peer review and workshop, generating 60 theses proposals and about 180 referee reports, 3 for each proposal. Students and their advisors receive detailed feedback on individual participation as author and referee. The main strength of the experience is the opportunity to assimilate the techniques of objective criticism and to reflect about the quality of own and others’ work. The paper also outlines research and development issues related to our effort to enhance the peer review culture among graduate students.

------------------------------------------------- Professional recognition: Discussion on the transfer of ePortfolio practices from teacher training to the workplace and how OpenBadges can foster it. In my thesis, 'ePortolios from teacher training to the workplace', I interviewed teachers, their supervisors at their current workplace, and their former tutors at their teacher training college. The aim of my research was to develop a model to understand whether and how ePortfolio practices were transferred from training to the workplace. Based on Engeström's Activity Theory triangle, my model identified that personal and professional recognition by peers was a key driver in the decision to continue or abandon such practices. During my talk I will present my model and some of my findings and show how participants perceive OpenBadges and Wenger’s Community of Practice (CoP) as incentives for continuing and developing ePortfolio practices.

As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other? Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development. This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Ever caught yourself nodding along when someone mentions "delivering value" in Agile, but secretly wondering what the heck they actually mean? You're not alone! Join us for an eye-opening session where we'll strip away the buzzwords and dive into the heart of Agile—value delivery. But what is "value"? Is it a mythical unicorn in the world of software development, or is there more to this overused term? This isn't going to be a sit-and-get lecture. We're talking about a face-to-face, interactive meetup where YOU play a crucial role. Come along to: Define It: What does "value" really mean? We’ll build a definition that’s not just words, but a compass for your Agile journey. Contextualise It: Discover what value means specifically to you, your team, your company, and your industry. Because one size does not fit all. Deliver It: Share strategies and gather new ones for uncovering and delivering true value—no more shooting in the dark!
