Both global and local network features are important for people search performance, and accounting for privacy concerns in these features can significantly impact search results. The local network feature, relating to direct connections, has more influence than global features relating to whole network propagation.

This paper reports on a user study to gauge user interaction with RSS based mobile electronic updates from a Moodle based virtual learning environment. The mobile reception of such information can be received in three dimensions of context: time, location and activity. With the active participation of fifteen students, the project aims to compare and evaluate the effectiveness of these context dimensions by comparing the level of user engagement initially across one academic term. The mobile updates relate to teaching material, course work feedback, and general announcements from academic staff across the University’s academic departments. As well as user profiling when interaction with the updates, early investigations show that there exists peak times when users interact with these applications. Initial results indicate that interactions occurred generally during office hours and within the confines of the campus environment, although uses of the activity based application were recorded also in informal locations outside of working hours. The results also show that time based electronic updates are the most popular, engagement wise, when compared to location and activity.

Social Network Analysis as a tool evaluate quality improvement in healthcare
This evaluation examines the relationships among members of a Quality Improvement (QI) initiative intended to improve the care and management of children with Asthma in the local community. QI methods typically involve teams of people working across multiple professional and organizational boundaries to enact change in a complex system of care. While the overall success of the initiative will be evaluated based on the improvement in health outcomes, a more immediate evaluation need was to assess a pathway to future success, namely, the connections between individuals involved in the initiative. Connections were important because the standard work responsibilities of individuals tends to occurs within existing work relationships while the QI work requires that individuals form new working relationships. Social network analysis is a methodology that visualizes and quantifies the relationships in networks of people and was used here to evaluate the connectedness between people. Individuals involved in the initiative indicated the extent to which they interacted with every other member of the initiative prior to beginning work on the initiative and presently. The connections between people were evaluated using a density measure and were found to have significantly increased for several QI teams. The role of persons in the network was evaluated using several centrality measures and was found to remain essentially stable. Implications for evaluation and the improvement of improvement initiatives are discussed.
NRNB Annual Report 2013
This document provides a summary of the 2013 annual progress report for the National Resource for Network Biology (NRNB). ABSTRACT
Every day, people take actions, trying to achieve their per-
sonal, high-order goals. People decide what actions to take
based on their personal experience, knowledge and gut in-
stinct. While this leads to positive outcomes for some peo-
ple, many others do not have the necessary experience, knowl-
edge and instinct to make good decisions. What if, rather
than making decisions based solely on their own personal
experience, people could take advantage of the reported ex-
periences of hundreds of millions of other people?
In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of mining the
relationship between actions and their outcomes from the
aggregated timelines of individuals posting experiential mi-
croblog reports. Our contributions include an architecture
for extracting action-outcome relationships from social me-
dia data, techniques for identifying experiential social media
messages and converting them to event timelines, and an
analysis and evaluation of action-outcome extraction in case
studies.
1. INTRODUCTION
While current structured knowledge bases (e.g., Freebase)
contain a sizeable collection of information about entities,
from celebrities and locations to concepts and common ob-
jects, there is a class of knowledge that has minimal cov-
erage: actions. Simple information about common actions,
such as the effect of eating pasta before running a marathon,
or the consequences of adopting a puppy, are missing. While
some of this information may be found within the free text of
Wikipedia articles, the lack of a structured or semi-structured
representation make it largely unavailable for computational
usage. With computing devices continuing to become more
embedded in our everyday lives, and mediating an increasing
degree of our interactions with both the digital and physical

COLLABORATIVE INNOVATION NETWORKS, VIRTUAL COMMUNITIES AND
GEOGRAPHICAL CLUSTERING

Abstract
This paper describes the emergence of Collaborative Knowledge Networks (CKNs), distributed communities taking advantage of the wide connectivity and the support of communication technologies, spanning beyond the organizational perimeter of companies on a global scale.
CKNs are made up of groups of self-motivated individuals, linked by the idea of something new and exciting, and by the common goal of
improving existing business practices, new products or services for which they see a real need. Their strength is related to their ability to activate
creative collaboration, knowledge sharing and social networking mechanisms, affecting positively individual capabilities and organizations’
performance.
We describe the case of a Global Consulting Community to highlight the cultural and structural aspects of this phenomenon. Our case study also
illustrates the composition of the CKN ecosystem, which are made up by a combination of Collaborative Innovation, Learning and Interest Networks.
Empirical evidence suggests physical proximity as a supporting success factor of such communities, depending on the capital and knowledge intensity of the target industry.

This document summarizes a workshop on social networks and network weaving. The workshop introduced concepts of networks and their benefits for social change. Participants learned about characteristics of healthy networks and the role of network weavers. The goals of the workshop were to help participants work with a network mindset and understand network theory. Participants provided input on topics for future learning community sessions focused on network mapping and applying network weaving practices to address local issues in Monterey County.

We investigate whether hierarchical positions have an impact on collaborative learning processes within
Communities of Learning(CoL). More specifically, we provide empirical evidence from a training program
of a global organization. Using social network analysis, our findings indicate that hierarchical positions
significantly influence participants’ network behaviour. Moreover, our results show that individuals tend to
gather information from outside of their own hierarchical position.

Executive Summary - Intro to Positive Organizational Devt
The document summarizes a study conducted to understand how UBC's Human Resources department has utilized positive psychology and strengths-based approaches in four of its leadership programs. A mixed methods study was conducted including surveys of past program participants and interviews. The survey results showed that participants generally had positive experiences reflecting the "elevate" and "magnify" aspects of the strengths revolution framework, but less so for the "refract" aspect. Interviews suggested programs could better help participants address weaknesses and apply learnings to potential job candidates. The study provided initial insights but a more rigorous qualitative analysis was limited by time constraints.

Network analysis is used to track relationships and information flow between people, groups, and organizations. It was used to analyze the network of IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development) in Asia and the Pacific region over multiple time periods. The mappings showed the network growing denser over time, with country program managers becoming more central and recognizing the value of networking. They also revealed key connectors who help spread knowledge more broadly and that interactions are often driven by specific needs for information. This study examined collaborative learning among postgraduate students in an online MBA program. The researcher observed how groups used computer-mediated communication and perceived its effects on their learning. Qualitative data was collected through interviews and analysis of electronic communications. The results showed that collaborative learning occurred as students communicated different perspectives, provided feedback, and negotiated understanding electronically. The conclusions were justified based on evidence from participant quotes and the theoretical framework of social constructivism.
