Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product?
• To find out if your target audience would buy your product
• To find out how much you could sell your product for
• To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience
• To find out how to market your product to your target audience
Find definitions of the 4 research methods and give your opinions as to advantages/disadvantages for each one.
Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage
Primary
Where you can go and find the
research on your own for your
film or this could be such as
questionnaires and a phone
survey to see what people need
in a specific film.
Get specific information for your
home town/city market and
something related to what you
are doing so it is a niche idea and
not a broad one.
It would take time to do and to
complete when you could be
going out and filming.
Secondary
Where you do internet research
to find out about your certain
idea.
It is very quick and easy to do all
you really need is a pc and
internet or device with internet on
Sometimes you can get to many
ideas and end up taking a lot of
time on what you actually want
to do.
Quantitative
Associated with an objective
quality of a thing or
phenomenon that is measurable
and verifiable, such as lightness
and heaviness.
Quantitative research allows
the researcher to measure and
analyse data. And is studied in
detail. Quantitative research
can be used to test hypotheses
in experiments because of its
ability to measure data using
statistics.
The main disadvantage of
quantitative research is the
context of the study or
experiment is ignored.
Another disadvantage is that a
large sample of the population
must be studied; the larger
the sample of people
researched, the more
statistically accurate the
results will be.
Qualitative
With qualitative research the
researcher has an idea of what to
expect. They gather data in an effort
to plug that data into the bigger
picture. With quantitative data, the
bigger picture is not known. It is a
way to determine how often things
Useful in early stages of
research. Freedom in research
and it gains more detailed and
rich data to form
comprehensive and maybe
visual results.
qualitative research can be
your own biased view, which
skews the data gathered.
Another disadvantage is that
this research method is very
time consuming and can last

happen. for months or even years
What research methods (e.g. primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative) did you use when completing the
assignments in year 10 for Unit 5 (Crime Drama and Music Videos) and Unit 7 (Festival Bags) ?
Secondary research
How did you collate, store and use the information when researching for your year 10 units? (e.g. did you book
mark key websites? Keep a list of websites used? Print off or save any info for your folders?)
I used websites that were linked into the key information
What research techniques (e.g. using the library, the internet, watching videos, reading info, recces, practises,
plans etc) did you use when completing the assignments in year 10 for Unit 5 (Crime Drama and Music Videos)
and Unit 7 (Festival Bags) ?

If you didn’t use some of the methods in year 10, would use you them if you were to do your projects again? How
and why would you do this?
I would use these Methods again, this is because I get more useful information
