1. Camera Shots and Movement
Shots:
Establishing shot. It describeswhere you are and showsall the characters
involved. It showsexterior, showsaudience the key points aboutsettings and
characters.
Next is a wide shot. It gives you loadsof information, showshow big or small
everything is. Has loadsof information involved.
Crane shot. It gives you brilliant birdseye view shots. It is also a greatway to
move the camera. A good swooping action.
Arial shot/ birdseye view. An exciting variation of a crane shot, usually taken
from a helicopter. Often used at the beginning of the film.
Close up. It shows very little background. Usually showshow important
something is. Could take you into the mind of a character, highlightsemotion.
Extreme emotion. It is an extreme version of the close up. Generally magnifying
beyond whatthe human eye can see. An extreme close up of the face would
show something like just the face, or just the mouth, or even tears and sweat.
Point Of View. This shot makes us see through the actorseyes.
Over the shoulder. This is where we see whatthe actorssee but not exactly
from their eyes. Puts the viewer in the scene.
Two Shot. This normally showsa conversation. Showstwo people in a shot. Link
or reaction between characters.
Shot/Reverse shot. This is where it shows one person is talking then it cuts back
to another person talking, the other character willbe shown looking back. (The
180 degree wall)
Movement:
Angles/Movement. A movementwhich scans a scene horizontally. The camera
is placed on a tripod, which operatesasa stationary axis point.
Tilts. A movement which scansa scene going vertically, otherwise similar to
pan.
2. High angle. It gives information aboutthe character. E.g, the character maybe
weak or small.
Low angle. This shot looks up at a character, thisshowshow powerfulor how
tall and big the character. Showsthe viewer as vulnerable, weak in a lower
status.
Dolly shots. Sometimes called a tracking shot. A camera is placed on a moving
vehicle or something that moves, that can move along with the action.
Hand held shots. A hand held shot can give a jerky, raggedeffect, thisis
favoured by film makerslooking for a gritty realism.
Zoom. This is where the camera moves closer to or away from the action in a
very quick movement. The zoom lens meansthat the camera doesnot need to
be moved, like with a dolly/tracking shot.
