Clapham Manor Primary School - School Council Slideshow November 2014.
1. REASONS FOR A SCHOOL COUNCIL:
o Children have asked for one and staff would like one
o It gives children an understanding of democratic
procedure
o It gives children some control
o It gives children an understanding of how the school runs
o It helps teachers and children to work together
o It makes children feel valued
o It gives children the opportunity to consider the
implications of decision making
o It provides another aspect of problem solving
2. REASONS FOR A SCHOOL COUNCIL:
o If someone wants to say something important to the whole school,
they can tell their rep who will then tell all the other reps at the
meeting. The reps will then go back to their classes and tell

10. SCHOOL COUNCIL RULES
1. There should be no mention of children’s names when bringing things
for discussion to the School Council.
2. Any problems that have arisen with individual members of staff should
not be raised at the School Council.
3. School Council meetings should be convened every third week of each
month and should be chaired by School Council representatives.
4. No decision made at a School Council meeting can be final until Mr
Hazell has talked with the staff and heard their ideas.
5. Each pair of School Council representatives should have a chance to
chair a School Council meeting at least once a year.
6. Each class should elect a boy and girl representative
11. How should meetings be conducted?
1. The members should sit in a circle.
2. Children should raise their hands if they have something they want to
say.
• One finger means "I want to talk about something to do with what
we are discussing at the moment".
• Three fingers raised means "I want to talk about something
different".
3. All children should get an opportunity to speak.
4. It should be made clear that the Chairperson is in charge of the
meeting. They should not be bossy when they have to control people
who are not concentrating or who are talking too much or are
misbehaving in any other way. They are just trying to control the
meeting.

1.Introductions and welcome:

reasons for a school council. Mr Hazell asked the council ‘What is a school council?’
Kookai (4G) – We can give ideas and make the school a better place for everyone.
Kieran (3R) – To treat people as you want to be treated.
Leonor (6K) – To give everyone a voice and to change and add new things.

13. MINUTES OF SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
held on Monday 22nd September 2014
2.Apologies for Absence:
None received.
3.Handout of files and badges:
The school council reps were all given folders to represent their class, the reps must bring these folders
to each meeting. They were also given school council badges to be worn in school.
4.Minutes of the last meeting (16.06.14):
The minutes were read through by the school council.
5.Matters arising:
Mr Allen will be in the playground during lunchtime and will be doing activities and games with children.
There is also more playground equipment.
6.Feedback from class reps:
6D – New playground equipment? Trampolines/trampettes. Mr Hazell explains that anything is possible
but there may be risks. Children would need protection incase they were to fall off and hurt themselves.
Would like to see sticky chocolate brownies for dessert at lunchtime and food such as burgers and
hotdogs on a Friday rather than fish and chips.
6K – Loom bands are not allowed in school but we are have seen children that are still wearing them.
4G – Would like longer playtimes. Mr Hazell and Ms Grave explain that in order for this to happen
children would have to finish school later and maybe even start school earlier.
14. MINUTES OF SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
held on Monday 22nd September 2014
7.Any other business:
Mr Hazell asked “What do you like about your school?” Below are some of the
responses given:
“Everybody takes responsability for each other at playtime.”
There are healthy lunches.
There are school trips.
The playground equipment.
“I like the glass cups and flowers at lunchtime.”
Teachers give children different options to keep them busy, for example school council.
Music and instruments.
Football tables.
Teething problems with the playground zones – Mr Hazell will speak to Ms Grace about
the the playground zones to see if this is working. Maybe using cones would make it easier to
separate the zones.
The next school council meeting will take place on Monday 24th November 2014.
