3. Indie Magazines
• Indie music is a type of alternative rock which
normally consists of bands such as The 1975,
Arctic Monkeys and Imagine Dragons. The artists
normally wear black but if not, wear unique yet
relaxed clothing. Indie music focusses on new
bands with potential who bring a good vibe and
easy to listen music. Most songs may be covers
and laid back songs. However, some may
release songs with an edge or a fast beat. Most of
these magazines show an instrument they play
and their style and how unique they are.
4. Jazz Magazines
• Jazz music started during the 19th and early 20th
century. This music explores musical instruments
such as Double bass, drums, guitar, piano,
saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, trombone, vocals,
vibraphone, Hammond organ, bass. Jazz is known
as a more soulful type of music which expresses a
lot of emotion and feelings. Most magazines
feature a famous jazz musician and features
instruments that the audience would associate
with jazz. Most jazz magazine are aimed at older
audiences as that is the niche market/target
audience.
5. Folk/country magazines
• Folk/country music features artists such as dolly
Parton, Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn. Musical
instruments include guitars, banjos, vocals,
fiddles and drums. This originated in Southern
United States, in Atlanta, Georgia in the 1920s.
The front of country magazines normally have a
theme of outdoors to portray the natural element
of the music. Also like jazz, instruments such as
guitars can be featured on the front to give an
idea of the theme of the magazine.
6. Rock Magazines
• originated as "rock and roll" in the United States in the
1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in
the 1960s e.g. punk rock, mod revival, blues and heavy
metal. Rock music consists of instruments such as, bass
guitar, electric guitar, vocals and drums. Some well
known rock artists are queen, Bon Jovi, Guns N’ Roses
and Aerosmith. The front cover of magazines normally
feature bands or numerous artists looking directly into
the camera and with an aggressive expression on their
face. This give an idea of the violent vive rock is
sometimes associated with. Also red, white and black
are normally the colour palette on the magazine.
7. Pop/Chart music
• originated in its modern form in the 1950s, stemming
from rock and roll. Instruments can be used in pop
music such as piano, guitar, drums vocals and other
digital equipment e.g. Digital audio workshop (DAW)
and auto tune which makes the notes in the singers
voice, pitch perfect. Pop artists include, Ariana Grande,
Ed Sheeran, Pharrell, Jessie J and Little Mix. Pop
magazines are normally quite vibrant and most refer to
the charts, as to who is on the front cover. Meaning the
main artist featured on the front of the magazine, have
normally reached number one in the charts. Making
them the most recent artist.
