country, region and continent is facing its own set of struggles and battles. Whether it is an
economic, political or social issue, there is always an obstruction that a country is striving to
overcome. One of the worldwide issues is ethnic cleansing and genocide. In particular, the South
Sudanese civil war is caused by differing opinions of ethnic groups and is leading to the attempt of
genocide. Despite the several laws under crimes against humanity opposing this practice, it still does
not stop groups from continuing this vile activity. South Sudan is in turmoil due to fighting between
those with ethnic differences, specifically the Dinka and the Nuer. These heinous crimes must be
stopped before the newly developed country, South Sudan, does not have an opportunity to flourish.
This issue has been common throughout history, varying in severity and affected ethnic groups. For
instance, the countries of Central Africa, Germany, Poland, Hungary and Myanmar have all been

1995 around the end of the Second World War. When Bosnia became its own independent nation on
April 5th 1922 it wanted to "cleanse" its country of any non Serbian residents. The killing of
Bosnian Muslims during this time was stated by international tribunals to be an ethnic cleansing
however the events that took place in July 1995 in Srebrenica was so horrific it was deemed a
genocide. The United Nations should have intervened a lot sooner than they did and should have
sent more than just peace keepers to protect the human beings that were being slaughtered.

The victims targeted during the Bosnian–Herzegovina genocide were mostly Bosnian Muslims and
Croatians. The majority of the people that were being murdered and executed were male (boys and
men), while the women were being raped and tortured. The downfall of the Ottoman Empire gave a
rise to the thoughts of nationalism which in turn caused the ethno religious (an ethnic group whose
members are also unified by a common religious background) in Bosnia to have clashing issues like

Ethnic cleansing has not been recognized by the United Nations as an independent crime. Although,
it has been recognized as trying to rid one group of people from an area to make the other group
ethnically homogenous. To do this a group can try to promote fear in another group making them

In the Nazi concentration camps women that were not Jewish had the opportunity to work as a
prostitute. In the reading, the author says, "When another prisoner asked why she had done it, she

The Armenian Genocide was a planned murder of the Armenians, due to the ethnic differences
between the Turks and the Armenians, which was spurred by the rising atrocities due to a suspicion
that the Armenians were not faithful to the Ottoman Turks. A rising question around this research

April 12, 1999 marked the Seventh Millennium Evening at the White House and the 54th year after
Franklin Roosevelt's death. Years after personally experiencing the horrors of the Holocaust and
World War II, Elie Wiesel shared his story with America among the President and First–lady, Hillary
Clinton, to inspire the world to act upon social and political injustices. In his speech "The Perils of
Indifference", Wiesel opened up about his past and how it made him realize how important it is to
stand up against crimes against humanity. He also discussed the state of the American people and
compared their involvement in foreign intervention back to the lack of intervention in World War II.
Wiesel motivated America with his emphasis on the emotional, logical, and ethical impacts of
indifference. Perhaps the most influential piece of Wiesel's speech was his inclusion of unique
personal narrative. His touching story of his youth spent in a concentration camp gave weight to his
points on indifference as he recalled that "Fifty–four years ago to the day, a young Jewish boy from
a small town in the Carpathian Mountains woke up...in a place of eternal infamy called
Buchenwald" (Wiesel). With no property to their name and no individual rights, they marched to
Buchenwald where his father later died before they could both escape ("Wiesel, Elie"). The reality

I argue that Wirathu of Burma's preaching of hate–filled sermons should not be tolerated. While it is
not the cause of the ethnic cleansing in Burma, his sermons can instigate violence between the
Muslims and Buddhists in the country. This ignites more rationalization of the ethnic cleansing.
Burma is no stranger to war or outside influence from other countries in the west, and after the
Buddhists of the county fought against military rule in 2007, they won the international
administration (Wade 6). Since the change in administration the Buddhist have been the most vocal
about the external threat the Islamic faith causes for the country (Wade 6). Most of the violence is
directed toward the Rohingya Muslims that were banned from Bangladesh because of violent
campaigns (Wade 7). With the Buddhist being the majority, it is easy for them to push out the
Rohingya with the ethnic cleansing, and some argue that Wirathu is at the head of the violence.
Wirathu's sermons include ideas like "In every town there is a savage Muslim majority" (Hodal 4).
Or "we are being sexually harassed, ganged up on, and raped in in every town" (Hodal). Using this
kind of language is bound to make his followers and others believe that these acquisitions are true of
