Are clothing, fashion, and lifestyle choices an effective way to make a political statement? Can
individuals express themselves without being constrained? This is an effective way and it is shown
in many ways. In the novel, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, Marji does not wear her veil because she
is less of a person and it is a constant reminder of women oppression. In "Politics of the Hoodie,"
the hoodie extinguishes individuality in this politicized life. In my eyes, this tactic is very potent
because in this society today, it is not easy to reside in. This is one of the ways that citizens can
express themselves instead of retorting to violence, especially teenagers today. Despite the negative
aspects that are created by the individuals on this earth, clothing, fashion, and lifestyle decisions can
make a compelling ideological statement. In the novel Persepolis, the use of clothing, fashion, and
lifestyle choices are used to make a political assertion. During the Iranian Revolution, women were
forced to wear the veil, but Marji disagreed with this. In the text it states, "Guns may shoot and
knives may carve but we won't wear your silly scarves!" (76). This shows that the veil was a way
women became involved in politics because it represented their attitude towards the veil and how it
should become an option. This was also a way that women showed their rebellion towards the veil.
Marji is approached by a female "guardian of the revolution" and she insults her choice of clothing.
In the text it states," Why are you wearing those punk shoes? Aren't you ashamed to wear tight jeans
like those?" (133). This shows that Marji's decision to wear her western style culture clothing to
make a political statement was effective. All of those items were forbidden it can be seen as an act
of rebellion. Lastly, when Marji received her Kim Wilde Poster, she loved it and hung it up in her
room even though it was not allowed. In the text it states "It is so far out... I put my posters up in my
room!" (181). This shows that even though posters conflicted with Iran's Islamic laws, this was
Marji's way of rebelling against the regime. Day by day society is regulated and it limits expression
that can be used to show individuality.

The punk movement that sprung in Britain during the 1960's, mostly due to the social problems
(joblessness, poverty and changing moral standards) faced by the younger generations, was

era was a negative time as the rebels hit out. It appeared they wanted to stand out from others with
their uncommon choice of clothing, hairstyles, jewellery and body modification. Fashion worn by

The first of these, punk rock, is the one that is most often discussed by music critic, but this
connection is rarely explored beyond a paragraph or two at the most. This is unfortunate, given that
these two musical traditions share much in common, with perhaps the biggest similarity being that
both are defined by a raw and unpolished sound, as well as do–it–yourself (DIY) work ethic. Punk
rock has its origin in the garage rock groups of the 1960s, whose members were often from white,
middle–class, suburban families. Garage rock was raw and unpolished, reflecting the relative

language that is outwith both cover art and fashion is the amateur 'punkzine' (punk fanzine) Sniffin'
Glue, in particular issue number two. This primary source is built on the foundations of DIY values.
With low production costs, the punk fanzine was created using felt tip pens for headings and a type
writer for some of the included articles. Rough sketches were included throughout with no value

The collaboration of hand drawn sketches with real life photograph allow this album to stand out
through use of bricolage. The bringing together of two different art forms in one gives the album an
interesting edge. The bright pink, bold lettering showing the band name 'Ramones' allows the album
to stand out through contrasting. The use of bright colours such as yellow or pink were often used in
punk imagery in order to make the colour objects stand out, making more of a statement. Having the
band name appear with such importance, demanding recognition means the album does not go
unnoticed. Pink is often seen a feminine colour and so the use of this in such a bold hue may be act
of rebelling against what is expected of men, by embracing a sense of femininity and/or neutrality
and bringing this together with an image showing the band looking carefree. The album exudes
juxtaposition with this appearing between monochrome and colour, image and drawing and
femininity and masculinity. Punk and The Work Place For many of those within the punk
subculture, negotiation between the expression of their punk identity and expectations of the roles
they had to play in their working environment were forced to take place. With the chance of
restrictive rules in place, limiting self–expression, it can be difficult for a person to feel content in

The 1970s was an eventful decade. Many people fought for equality and peace. 1970s fashion wasn't
just clothing, it was showing their voice through the cultural and political times. The many styles
and looks of them showed people's personality and who they are too. The 70s was diverse in style,
makeup, hair, and changed over the years. In the 1970s fashion was multifarious. The main styles
were hippie, bohemian, sporty chic, disco, and a little bit of punk. Hippie style originated in the 60s,
but the style really blossomed in the 70s. Hippies loved the colorful, simple, expressive designs

were a big part of fashion like kaleidoscope, checker, floral, and geometric patterns. Suede was a
material that made clothing and accessories soft and delicate looking throughout this decade. Denim
was also used for a little bit of everything. Embroidery and other details were added to denim to put
some personality into it. Pantsuits were significant in the 1970s. Before the 70s women didn't really
go out in public being seen wearing pants. That's why pantsuits started modern women's style.

The 1970s was full of movement and change, and the fashion trends of that time reflected that. The
clothes were bold and diverse as people wore clothes they preferred over what was the social norm
of the gender, race, or any other category. Women started wearing more masculine clothes, men
experimented with different suits and many unisex outfits and new styles emerged and became
popular in this decade. Therefore, due to the attitude of the seventies being about individualism, the

the jeans. Two styles that became popular in the 1970s were the hippie style and the punk rock style.
