Minesing Swamp Essay
The Minesing Swamp has a high diversification of plants. This diversification contains sensitive and
rare species. Due to the sensitive and rare species, Canada has started banning the use of motorized
vehicles in the Swamp to prevent the disturbance and harm that the vehicles could cause to the
plants. The diversification along with the size attributes to the reason why this wetland was chosen
for the Ramsar site. Many of the plant species is provincially rare such as water leaf, love grass,
valerian, Oswego tea, three sedges, spike rush, and ram's head lady slipper. In the Minesing Swamp

The Deciduous Bottomland Complex is made up of bottomland containing silver maple and bur oak
that are resistant to heavy floods, river levee containing basswood and hackberry forests, bur aak,
and American elm, and marshes located in the Bottomland Complex that contain cattails and bur–
reed. The Glacial Lake Shoreline is made up of deciduous forest of the Nippissing Bluff containing
beech, white birch, and sugar maple, which is the most important, and gently sloping Lake Payette
Terrace containing cedar or balsam fir forests where scattered pools are present. These different
complexes all help with flooding and erosion. The roots of these plants stabilize the soil preventing
erosion. Also, the presence of the plants affects the hydrology of the water. This includes the water
level, water flow, and water chemistry. The velocity of the water flowing through the Swamp
determines how much erosion occurs for the water cutting into the soil, but with trees and other

Title: The Effect of Algae Growth on Mud Snails.
Introduction: I am going to do an experiment that will test whether algae effects mud snails. I want
to test this because I have learned about the effects of algae on certain ecosystems, and I want to
know how it will affect the salt marsh. I am interested in how algae growth will effect mud snails.
This project will help me learn the effects of algae on organisms living in the salt marsh.
Question: How does algae affect mud snails living in the salt marsh?
Hypothesis: High amounts of algae growing in the salt marsh will cause a large decrease in the mud
snail population.
Collection of Data: I am going to create three environments: one with no algae growing, one with
normal algae levels (as a control group), and one with high amounts of algae growing. Then I will
place a population of 100 mud snails in each. Finally, I will make a graph of how many mud snails
are alive at the different amounts of algae growth.
How I will analyze my data: I will organize my data into a graph. This will let me compare my
results easily because I will be able to see the mud snail population in comparison to the amount of
algae growth.

attempts to protect the coastal marshes of Louisiana against the selfish oil companies and citizens
that wish to destroy it for money. This is a tremendous concern that people deal with in America.
John Grisham wrote The Pelican Brief, in 1992 and it was one of his best selling books. Louisiana's
marshes are being destroyed and are suffering greatly because of humans. Grisham shows extensive
knowledge of the wetlands as well as the wildlife through discussing the endangered Brown Pelican
and how humans have brought it to the brink of extinction. Numberless amounts of waterfowl, birds,
and countless species that call Louisiana home are now being terrorized thanks to non–native
species, humans and a numerous amount of different causes. The Brown Pelican, Louisiana's state
bird, has been endangered until 1995, and about half of all the geese in North America spend the
winter in the coastal marshes (Elliott, Charles). Additionally, Louisiana is the leading state for the

These two studies investigated the effects of the April 2010 BP Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of
Mexico, and the observable effects that it has had on coral reef and salt marsh ecosystems. The
study conducted by White investigated nine coral communities six months after the spill using
ROVs. In an area 11 km west of the spill site, the researchers studied scleractinian, gorgonian,
antipatharian corals and found many that were covered with floc, a brown flocculent material, that is
linked to coral tissue damage and mortality. The study conducted by Silliman et. al. investigated the
oil spill impacts on the salt marshes lining the Louisiana coast. Silliman and his team identify oil
spills as one of the most damaging forms of pollution due to their unpredictable nature and
associated lack of readily available tools and resources that would be needed to restrict their impact
on nearby ecosystems. The team studied salt marshes located in Barataria Bay, LA which was one
the regions that experienced some of the most extensive oiling from the spill. The team investigated
the current status and future impacts of the spill on the marshes. Past data revealed that negative
impacts on marshes could be corrected with plant re–growth and oil degradation that naturally
occurs with time, and at even faster rates in warmer climates, which provides a hopeful outlook for

A threshold of life and death, the swamp holds a length of trees in its standing waters up to its
multi–layered canopy. Amid low–lying shrubs, pools coalesce atop seasoned earth. The saturated
land keeps an enraptured meadow. I admire the wildness of its primordial nature, I can easily
appreciate the outgrowth of its networks and wonder how far they stretch.
I remember years ago, while I was volunteering in New Orleans, I was with a crew of kids cleaning
up one of the bayous in the area shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit. Between alligators, we pulled
out debris from the water with thirty something foot long rakes.
Walking down a green thoroughfare I noticed a heron in the water. I froze. Instantly we made eyes.
The shape of the bird caught me. It was long, slender and rigid standing utterly still in the bayou. Its
birdness kept me in a trance. There it stood atop the low water, in blue and gray.
I was shocked. The sense of it standing there amid alligators in a freshly weather torn world gave me
an immense feeling. It was as if this bird reminded me of shame, shame for being separate, for being
human. Together we came face to face, and each sort of gave the other access. Shook, I tried to
continue my walk, but I felt like I shouldn't. The bird and the rest of the swamp, the rest of nature,
were all around me suddenly watching.
Just moments before, immersed in the other volunteers' dark visions of the potential fate of the area

The parent material for mangrove swamps is very similar to that of any coastal wetland. This is
because mangrove swamps occupy the terrestrial edge between estuary wetland and marine waters.
The soils are sandy with areas of heavy peat deposits created by copious amounts of plant litter.
Mangrove swamps cannot form along cliffs because the mangrove tree species only grow on low
gradient slopes ("Tour of mangrove," 2008). The red mangrove species produce the peat deposits
characteristic of the mangrove swamps. The peat is acidic and is capable of dissolving the limestone

Mangrove swamps are named after their dominant vegetation. The mangrove swamp is divided into
three zones: the proximal zone, the middle zone, and the distal zone. The proximal zone (also known

main plant species found in this zone include Rhizophora apiculata and Rhizophora mucronata.
These plants have adapted to the waters edge by forming long aerial prop roots that attach the plant

There is rapid destruction of salt marshes and wetlands due to dredging operations and filling. In
Boston, almost eighty–one percent of the salt marshes have been lost. For the Canadian Maritimes,
almost sixty–four percent of the coastal wetlands have disappeared due to agricultural reclamation.
Approximately, ninety–three percent coastal marshes have been lost along the Pacific coast in the
United States. In addition, there is a degradation of coastal wetland due to invasive species, nutrient
enrichment, and storm water discharge. It is critical to preserve and restore coastal salt marshes so
that carbon can be sequestered, and fish and bird populations can be preserved (Roman et. al. 2012).
It is estimated that coastal wetlands are being lost at the rate of two times the rate at which they are
being restored. Salt marshes are found amid human developments and coastal areas and play an
important role in protecting these communities from the threats posed by being close to the coast.
Depending on the density of vegetation, production of biomass, and the size of the marsh, salt
marshes provide many critical ecosystem services, such as, stabilization of the shoreline, weakening

I visited this gallery on September 16th and liked that this gallery is open to the public and has free
admission. The Fifth Avenue Art Gallery contains wonderful art that are all originals. These visual
arts come in a variety of forms like painting, sculptures, crafts, and jewelry. The Fifth Avenue Art
Gallery has a wide variety of art too from different artists and a beautiful collection of different
pieces. I selected the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery because I was curious to see how other people
viewed Florida through their art. Two artists in particular caught my attention, Bill McCoy and
Nancy Hamlin–Vogler. Bill McCoy is a traditional oil painter that creates paintings that reflect
Florida's lifestyle and nature. His paintings are semi–realistic and capture the beauty of Florida. Bill
McCoy's medium is oil on canvas, and uses Florida as inspiration. Nancy Hamlin–Vogler is an artist
of many talents and creates art in various different mediums like acrylic, charcoal, and mixed media.
Her artwork is sporadic and spontaneous that ignites deep thought and emotion. The gallery is
arranged by collections and artists, so an artist's collection is all together and not all around the

Therefore there was a recorded 8 birds, 1 dove, 5 magpie goose and 2 pacific black duck, 3 weeks
after the floods. By 2017 the total of 8 birds, 3 species have now increased to a total of 25 birds, 6
species in 4 years. Though this being said many of the birds are 'new' to the area such as the 15
Cotton pygmy Geese and 4 recorded Dusky Moorhen. 6 bird species were seen/recorded in 2017,

The macroinvertebrates graph (figure 2) represents the diversity of species inhabiting the Baldwin
Swamp. In 2009 the Baldwin swamp was flourishing with a large diversity of species. A total of 33
macroinvertebrates, 8 species were recorded. At this time the baldwin swamp was healthy, abundant
in life and the ecosystem and food webs were unaffected by the floods. Whereas 3 weeks after the
floods swept through there were little to no range of species of macroinvertebrates. There were a

investigate how biodiversity changed for areas away from human habitat. Salt marshes and wetland
are under severe threat due to irresponsible actions on the part of humans. There needs to be an
awareness and understanding in the general public as to the importance of these natural habitats and
their significance to the general ecosystem. There is enough evidence to suggest the degradation has
already happened, and how critical it is to protect salt marshes and wetlands. The results were
encouraging as they pointed in the general direction that diversity was not impacted close to the
pathway that was subjected to human traffic. However, the data collected did not point to any
specific conclusions. Nonetheless, it provided valuable information on the subject of the study. The
results for the entire class data indicated that for richness, there was a positive correlation between
the family richness of the samples and the distance from the path. Specific results for one group for
each sample point indicated that for richness, there was more richness observed near the path than
away from it. For evenness, the results indicated that as the distance from the path increased, the
evenness did not have a clear pattern, even though there was a general increase in evenness away

fail to appreciate and protect these marshes, their continuous impacts on coastal infrastructure would
not only negatively impact humans but to the life on the salt marshes as well. Salt marshes are found
in the temporal zone on protected shorelines throughout the world and are stressful environments
due to their intertidal behaviors. As a result, plants and animals living in salt marshes must have
adaptations to deal with the harsh physical stressors, ranging from high salt concentrations, intense
heat, and low oxygen in waterlogged soils (Sulliman 2014). Nevertheless, there is a positive trade–
off: although plants and animals have to overcome these physical obstacles, they get access to
abundant resources, protection from predators, and a high potential for both them and their offspring
in return. An example of this trade–off is investigated with a fish, a mummichog Fundulus

of wetlands up until the 1970s was draining and filling, and while the laws created then focused on
reducing wetland destruction through urbanization, wetlands are still being deteriorated. Today, the
main concern is wetland loss created by increased amounts of open water on the marsh surface. The
literature suggests that on average, healthy New England marshes have 9% permanent open water
on their surface. However, an open water assessment indicates an average of 47% permanent open
water on the marshes studied (Kirwan 2013).
In Long Island, the marshes are wetter and vegetated areas are shifting from high marsh to low
marsh or to mud flat, which are far less productive and give fewer services than the salt marshes and
other high marshes that are supposed to be there. (Kirwan 2013

In John Grisham's The Pelican Brief, He brings up oil and gas companies drilling in the wetlands,
which is destroying them, and I decided to investigate further about how these companies have been
hurting the environment. The main way that the wetlands are being killed is from the salt water that
is intruding into the marshes from the canals, that gas and oil companies use, are the way that most
salt water gets so deep inside the wetlands (Barnowski). Oil and gas companies are always trying to
build more canals to invade different areas of the wetlands when they find different reserves of oil
and gas just like Victor Mattiece was in the Pelican Brief. When they build more canals, The
wetlands soil starts to break up and that destroys the small amount of land that is left in the
wetlands. There are several different types of marshes with different salinities which are measured
using ppt which is the amount of salt in a thousand units. The types of marshes include freshwater,
intermediate, brackish, and salt marshes. Freshwater marshes have no salinity and are 100%
freshwater as the name would suggest. Intermediate marshes have a salinity from 0–5 ppt
