3. Political maps show the human made features of Earth. Earth’s land area is mainly made up of seven
giant continents, but people have divided much of the land into smaller political units called countries.
A political map shows boundaries - imaginary lines that divide two places. These boundaries outline
such political units as countries, states, counties and school districts. It is unlike other maps in that its
purpose is to show borders.
A political map also makes a deliberate political statement about which areas of the earth belong to
a country or state. Political maps use different colors to help to differentiate what it is they are trying
to show within the map.
