  2. 2.  WHAT IS A MAP? • The map is a representation of the earth’s surface. • It presents information about the world in a simple way. • With the help of a map, we can determine the size and shape of countries. • It helps us to show the distance between certain places. 2
  3. 3.  TYPES OF MAPS • There are many different types of maps; 1.Political Maps. 2.Physical Maps. 3.Thematic Maps. 4.Topographic Maps. 5.Climatic map. 6.Economic map. 7.Road map. 3
  4. 4.  Political Maps: • They usually show the cities, towns, and villages. • It does not show physical features. • The capital city is marked with a star within a circle. • They show state and national boundaries. 4
  5. 5.  Physical Maps: • They are also known as “Relief Maps”. • It shows the natural features of the earth. • They do not contain man- made features. • Green color = lower elevations. • Orange/ Brown = higher elevations. 5
  6. 6.  Thematic Maps: • It is also called a “Statistical Map”. • It focuses on spatial variability. • The primary purpose of a thematic map is to visually portray a non- visual phenomenon. • A good thematic map clearly shows geographic patterns that mirror patterns in the real world. 6
  7. 7.  Topographic Plates: • It shows the shape of the earths surface. • It is used by geologist to record types of rocks. • Engineers use it when they are planning roads, buildings or other human-made structures. 7
  8. 8. IMPORTANCE OF MAP • Maps use symbols like lines and different colors to show features. • Maps also help us to know distances so that we know how far away one thing is from another. • Maps can show distributions of things over Earth 8
