Summary & Critique About Article the Science of Desire Essays
Summary
The article The Science of Desire presents ethnography and its proponents play an important role in
modern business world. Author Ante began with an example, the satellite–radio war, to show how
ethnography worked in business.
In satellite–radio war, Sirius Satellite Ratio made a team of social scientists, designers, and
ethnographers. Through studying customers' habit of listening to music, watching TV and reading
magazines, the team concluded several facts that can defeat competitors. Then, depending on the
research, Sirius launched its new product, the Sirius S50. Later, as the company's wish, the S50
became one of the hottest sellers in that season. How does ethnography work in business? Many
examples show brainstorms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, GE shares prototypes with customers. Furthermore, instead of currying favor with
executives, it works closely with engineers to solve technical problems.
Third, ethnography transforms a culture. From 1990s, Intel, a big corporation that does not market
directly to consumers, brought in ethnographers at the highest levels of management in order to
focus on consumer products more. In past years, Intel developed its wireless Centrino mobile
technology by studying Alaska's fishers; Intel began to develop medical technology for the wave of
retiring boomers by studying the elderly; Intel developed $500 Community India PC by studying
rural Indian condition. In order to do better in ethnography research, Intel created a network of
"platform–definition centers" in Bangalore, Cairo, São Paulo, and Shanghai. Although some ones in
the company still does not believe ethnography, with anthropologists' help, indeed engineers and
other had better get used to it. Critique Generally, I agree with the principles of this article. At first,
let's look at what is ethnography. According to the definition in the website Wikipedia:
Ethnography (Greek ἔθνος ethnos = people and γράφειν graphein = writing) is a genre of writing
that uses fieldwork to provide a descriptive study of human societies. Ethnography presents the
results of a holistic research method founded on the idea that a

Wimax: The Next Broadband Wireless Revolution
ABSTRACT:
WiMax is the next step on the road to a wireless world, extending broadband wireless access to new
locations and over longer distances. It will also significally reduces the cost of bringing broadband
to new areas.
[pic]
INTRODUCTION: WiMax (worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is the recently
approved IEEE 802.16 wireless metropolitan area network (MAN) standard for wireless access.
WiMax is the real wireless architecture by which the wireless access range can extended to 49.6Kms
compared with Wi–Fi 91mts and Bluetooth's 9mts. WiMax 802.16 has a single carrier modulation
scheme that operates between 10GHz and 66GHz ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
[pic]
Cellular backhaul: The robust bandwidth of 802.16 technology makes it an excellent choice for
backhaul for the commercial enterprises, such as those providing 'hotspots',as well as for point –to–
point backhaul applications.
Broadband to underserved and remote areas: WiMax is a natural choice for under served rural and
outlying areas with a low population density.
Broadband on demand: It can help to accelerate the deployment of Wi–Fi hotspots especially in
those areas not served by cable, in areas where the local telephone company may have a long lead
time for providing a broadband service.
Best–connected wireless service: WiMax has nomadic capabilities, which allow users to connect to
WISP even when they roam outside their home or business, or go to another city that also has a
WISP.

CHIP ADVANCES: The main obstacles to long distance wireless communications are limitations on
battery power and poor power efficiency. Regulation keeps the power levels low and the range of
Wi–Fi signals short, to avoid the overcrowding of airwaves. But advances in DSP chips mean that
weak signals can be deciphered, lengthening the distance that is practical for transmission, as well as
improving distance and speed potential. Battery improvement is vital to make a WiMax cell phone a

Intel Corporation (Intel) is an American technology company which its headquarter is located in
Santa Clara, California where is colloquially referred as "Silicon Valley". Intel Corporation is found
by Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce in 1968. Intel is the inventor of microprocessors for computer
system manufactures. During the period before 2007, Intel faced lots of both external and internal
problems such as a decision making to move on or to start a new action. Nowadays, Intel is one of
the top company which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, Intel also designed other four businesses which used microprocessor such as servers,
workstations, desktops, and mobile. However, these four businesses were not primary opportunity.
Until the processor production reached the limitation of hardware as power–hungry, increasing of
competitors and shifting of consumers occurred. The barrier of entry is low. Advanced Micro Device
(AMD) is the main competitor of Intel because this company created the first 1GHz processor called
Athlon chip before Intel in 2000. Intel's next step was reducing a price which impacted on the
profitability. Because of the decreasing of revenue in 2001, the CEO, Craig Barrett, conducted two
ways which were looking for new ways and finding a reason with solutions of the problem. Both
ways took long time to find the solutions. At this period of time, Intel faced inflection point.
Apart from the headquarter in California, there was another small team in Israel Design Center
(IDC) who worked on Chopaka and Timna, codenames, which brought the changing strategic
direction of Intel as Centrino Mobile Technology. The objective of Timna is to reduce the production
cost by reducing the size of a die and adding more components in a chip. This processor is cheap
and consumes low–power. Then, Banias came after Timna. It was the combination of four factors
such as higher performance, saving more battery

One industry which continues to hold its head high even in an environment of industrial slowdown
is information technology (IT) – with annual growth rates of software value hovering between 20%
and 30%. Growth rates for the industry earlier were as high as 40% to 60%. The soft–ware industry
is supported, on the one hand, by the hardware industry – computers, peripherals and components,

The high income segment of consumer household recorded a 21% growth in demand and continued
to dominate the market with 55% share in the overall household segment. The middle level segment
registered a 16% growth in sales and accounted for 29% in the segment. Households in the
relatively low income bracket posted a decline in its share. Sales in this segment declined by14%.
World computer chip leader, Intel, unveiled a new processor designed to turn a personal computer
into a living room multimedia centre. Intel also announced new ventures with other electronics
producers, including Microsoft and content vendors to give a richer Internet content experience.
Intel was expected to launch small, affordable laptops for students, called 'Eduwise' in the Indian
market by earlier of 2008. Eduwise does not have a hard drive. It has a flash memory and can be
networked through the Internet and through wired or wireless network. Eduwise is expected to cost
less than USD 400. Intel, which invested USD 700 mn in India over the past few years, has plans to
invest over a in India towards R&D and other investments.
Apple is expected to unveil the first Mac–based on Intel processors. Apple recently added some
Media Centre–like capabilities to its iMac line with a programme, called Front Row. Big Apple
Manufacturing has sold about 1300 computers priced at around Rs 7000 in about nine months. All

MARKETING PLAN:
Most are "doers" and not "planners". If we want to do the right marketing activities in the right way
we must start with a marketing plan. For that, marketing planning must be continuously undertaken
to see any shifting market conditions, changing customer needs, competitive threats as well as
potential opportunities.
MARKETING MIX:
Consists of the following 4 elements (Ps'):
Product Price Place (distribution) & Promotion
These 4 Ps' are the parameters that the marketing managers can control, subject to the internal and
external constraints of the marketing environment. The goal is to make decisions that center the 4
Ps' on the customer customers in the target market in order to create perceived value and generate a
positive response. PRODUCT:
The term "product" refers to tangible, physical products as well as services. It relates to the end–
user's needs and wants. Here are some examples of the product decisions to be made:

The Pros And Cons Of The Intel Platform
A platform is a place where support can be provided for a system or software or hardware and where
they work. For example, the Windows XP system can be seen as a platform in which many software
and function programs are installed, and the system that supports these programs is the system. The
system can be seen as a platform. Intel platform is based on compatible Intel products, specifically
for Intel development of software or hardware providers, they developed what is the Intel platform

known as the X86 series, but the CPU core architecture design of the two companies is different, the
direction of development is not the same, because the design of CPU LED chip group and matching
have great difference. However, since both Intel and AMD use standard interfaces to support the

three aspects, namely (1) the rationale behind your selection, (2) the changing requirements imposed
by the new economy and (3) the disconnections between an organization's IT capability and the
external requirements. It is vital to address the increasing commoditization of IT and/or IT––‐based

However, proponents argue that "the new telecommunication technologies are the electronic
highways of the informational age, equivalent to the role played by railway systems in the process
of industrialization" (Henderson and Castells 1987:6 as cited by Dicken 2007:83) implying that IT
indeed is in the process of reaching maturity but that there are still gaps where the advances in IT
have not been exploited fully. "The time–space convergence process is geographically uneven"
(Dicken, 2007:83) since two thirds of all registered domain names are in just three countries (US,
Germany, UK). Therefore IT services are far from being globally available which implies that even
if IT–based solutions are reaching homogeneity in developed parts of the world, for underdeveloped
ones IT can still be looked upon as a source of competitive advantage if implemented adequately.

Chipping Away at Intel Case Study
Chipping Away at Intel Case Study
In today's economy, corporations are consistently experiencing pressures to change. With pressures
both internally and externally, leaders must constantly reassess who, what, when, where, why and
how they do business. In light of these obstacles, they strive for the highest possibility of success by
taking risks and pushing limits that others may question as extreme. We are going to review the
"Chipping Away at Intel Case Study" to examine the different changes CEO, Craig R. Barret
implemented, which pressures Intel experienced and how he responded to these pressures.

"Maintaining and enhancing corporate reputation is therefore an important part of managing firm
survival..." (Palmer, Dunford, & Akin, 2009, p. 59). They needed to enhance their strategy in order
to continue to stay as a leading innovator.
Barret responded to these pressures by introducing more reorganization of the company and also a
change in strategy by cancelling the 4–GHz Pentium 4. This restructure of business units would
ensure that work was systematized throughout the organization. Huang, Chen and Han (2011)
suggest that even a reorganization based on top of the line principles will not be successful if it is
not directed by a strong, perfectly timed business idea. Intel's new CEO to take control after Barret
was Paul Otellini, and he was in for a big challenge to keep these changes moving in a positive
direction.
If I was Paul Otellini, I would definitely step back, review all the changes and strategies which were
put in place and assess which worked and which did not. Also, communicate internally with
management and the employees to hear their concerns, ideas and thoughts. After reassessing
everything, I would then decide what, if more, changes are needed, both large and small.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the pressures Intel faced during Barret's tenure caused a significant amount of turmoil
which resulted in a substantial amount of change. He was able to keep them on top in their market

The Science Of Desire : Ethnography And Its Proponents Play
Summary The article The Science of Desire presents ethnography and its proponents play an
important role in modern business world. Author Ante began with an example, the satellite–radio
war, to show how ethnography worked in business. In satellite–radio war, Sirius Satellite Ratio
made a team of social scientists, designers, and ethnographers. Through studying customers' habit of
listening to music, watching TV and reading magazines, the team concluded several facts that can
defeat competitors. Then, depending on the research, Sirius launched its new product, the Sirius
S50. Later, as the company's wish, the S50 became one of the hottest sellers in that season. First, as
author Ante (2006) said, "ethnographers' findings often do not lead to a product or service, only a
generalized sense of what people want" (p. 100). Even if ethnographers find something, it also needs
designers and engineers to make products or services to fit it. This process is not easy, even the
findings cannot transmit into products and service. Second, ethnographers' research usually takes a
long time, and the result from using the findings needs long time to come out. Therefore, how to use
ethnography right is very important. The author gave five advises to do ethnography right. First,
"Think Big Thoughts". Companies should used ethnography in big and broad questions, not in small
and detailed ones. Second, "Due Diligence". Companies should use the right consultants for their
projects. Third, "Start

 Overview:
Intel changed marketing history by achieving to publicize an inner piece of a product that could not
be seen from the outside. By placing tags on products, they could display their company logo and
the model of the product inside the computer, thus making publicity to an 'ingredient' inside the
whole. In those initial marketing campaigns Intel well–known themselves from the competition by

Past, Present & Future Role of Computers in Fisheries
Chapter 1
Past, Present and Future Trends in the Use of Computers in Fisheries Research
Bernard A. Megrey and Erlend Moksness
I think it's fair to say that personal computers have become the most empowering tool we've ever
created. They're tools of communication, they're tools of creativity, and they can be shaped by their
user. Bill Gates, Co–founder, Microsoft Corporation Long before Apple, one of our engineers came
to me with the suggestion that Intel ought to build a computer for the home. And I asked him, 'What
the heck would anyone want a computer for in his home?' It seemed ridiculous! Gordon Moore, Past
President and CEO, Intel Corporation

Our aim is to provide critical reviews on the latest, most significant developments in selected topic
areas that are at the cutting edge of the application of computers in fisheries and their application to
the conservation and management of aquatic resources. In many cases, these are the same authors
who contributed to the first edition, so the decade of perspective they provide is unique and
insightful. Many of the topics in this book cover areas that were predicted in 1989 to be important in
the future (Walters 1989) and continue to be at the forefront of applications that drive our science
forward: image processing, stock assessment, simulation and games, and networking. The chapters
that follow update these areas as well as introduce several new chapter topic areas. While we
recognize the challenge of attempting to present up to date information given the rapid pace of
change in computers and the long time lines for publishing books, we hope that the chapters in this
book taken together, can be valuable where they suggest emerging trends and future directions that
impact the role computers are likely to serve in fisheries research.

To solve these problems a company can implement Wi–Fi on their network. This can reduce the
price of implementing additional cable in the network.
Wi–Fi technology comes with many upsides, but it also has it downfalls too.
Pros
The major advantage of Wi–Fi is the fact that users do not need to be physically connected to the
network in order to access the Web and network resources. Wi–Fi provides increased mobility.
Among employees, those who use a laptop will worry no more about connecting using a connection
cable. They will be able to move from their office to the meeting room without losing connection.
Besides eliminating much of the need for extensive wiring and dedicated workstation, Wi–Fi means
the Internet is accessible anywhere users can pick up a signal, which allows for greater flexibility in
office configurations. Wi–Fi systems can also be much less expensive to set up, since the main cost
is in the wiring to the main router. If an existing wired Internet network is already in place, adding
Wi–Fi capabilities is relatively simple, with no need to purchase a dedicated workstation. Wi–Fi
systems are also relatively inexpensive to operate and easy to use. For employees and authorized
visitors to connect to Wi–Fi does not present any technical difficulty. Depending on the router type
simply enter the WEP or WAP key associated with your Wi–Fi after double–clicking the icon
"Wireless Network Connection". After a

Categories performs optimal scaling procedures, including correspondence analysis. Complex
Samples allows survey, market, health, and public opinion researchers, as well as social
scientists who use sample survey methodology, to incorporate their complex sample designs into
data analysis.
Conjoint provides a realistic way to measure how individual product attributes affect consumer and
citizen preferences. With Conjoint, you can easily measure the trade–off effect of each product
attribute in the context of a set of product attributes–as consumers do when making purchasing
decisions.
Custom Tables creates a variety of presentation–quality tabular reports, including complex stub–
and–banner tables and displays of multiple response data. Data Preparation provides a quick visual
snapshot of your data. It provides the ability to apply validation rules that identify invalid data
values. You can create rules that flag out–of–range values, missing values, or blank values. You can
also save variables that record individual rule violations and the total number of rule violations per
case. A limited set of predefined rules that

Computers And The Price Of Prices Essay
Price had never been this low where a desktop costs only $499, whereas laptops are hovering around
$1100. Yet do not forget the $500 Apple mini sub compact laptop or the Apple iBook laptop that
sells for $650, and the stripped down $400 after rebate laptops companies like Gateway and
eMachine are flooding the market with to make money on volume of sales instead of a high price
margin. The problem is even if the price of PCs plummets the effect is not felt immediately, because
people do not rush to change their PC despite the fact they are getting it cheaper, which means the
PC turnover rate is low like most durable goods. That might be what is contributing to the declining
of prices, as the assumption of the manufacturers might be that if the price goes low enough people
might want to change their computer to avail themselves the latest add–ons. Even the add–ons
themselves seem to have reached their zenith some time ago and the latest most alluring gadget that
came into existence was CD/DVD RW and every reasonably priced desktop or laptop is equipped
with it. However, it does not mean the makers of PCs are not coming up with new functionality,
add–ons, and price reductions to woo buyers. The other recent addition was Wi Fi that got boost
from the introduction of Intel 's Centrino mobile technology chip and it had added a lot to the
mobility of laptops, which can access the Internet wherever hot spots are available. Other than that,
the overall performance of PCs despite

Summary &Amp; Critique About Article The Science Of Desire Essays

  • 1. Summary & Critique About Article the Science of Desire Essays Summary The article The Science of Desire presents ethnography and its proponents play an important role in modern business world. Author Ante began with an example, the satellite–radio war, to show how ethnography worked in business. In satellite–radio war, Sirius Satellite Ratio made a team of social scientists, designers, and ethnographers. Through studying customers' habit of listening to music, watching TV and reading magazines, the team concluded several facts that can defeat competitors. Then, depending on the research, Sirius launched its new product, the Sirius S50. Later, as the company's wish, the S50 became one of the hottest sellers in that season. How does ethnography work in business? Many examples show brainstorms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, GE shares prototypes with customers. Furthermore, instead of currying favor with executives, it works closely with engineers to solve technical problems. Third, ethnography transforms a culture. From 1990s, Intel, a big corporation that does not market directly to consumers, brought in ethnographers at the highest levels of management in order to focus on consumer products more. In past years, Intel developed its wireless Centrino mobile technology by studying Alaska's fishers; Intel began to develop medical technology for the wave of retiring boomers by studying the elderly; Intel developed $500 Community India PC by studying rural Indian condition. In order to do better in ethnography research, Intel created a network of "platform–definition centers" in Bangalore, Cairo, São Paulo, and Shanghai. Although some ones in the company still does not believe ethnography, with anthropologists' help, indeed engineers and other had better get used to it. Critique Generally, I agree with the principles of this article. At first, let's look at what is ethnography. According to the definition in the website Wikipedia: Ethnography (Greek ἔθνος ethnos = people and γράφειν graphein = writing) is a genre of writing that uses fieldwork to provide a descriptive study of human societies. [pic] Cellular backhaul: The robust bandwidth of 802.16 technology makes it an excellent choice for backhaul for the commercial enterprises, such as those providing 'hotspots',as well as for point –to– point backhaul applications. Broadband to underserved and remote areas: WiMax is a natural choice for under served rural and outlying areas with a low population density. Broadband on demand: It can help to accelerate the deployment of Wi–Fi hotspots especially in those areas not served by cable, in areas where the local telephone company may have a long lead time for providing a broadband service. Best–connected wireless service: WiMax has nomadic capabilities, which allow users to connect to WISP even when they roam outside their home or business, or go to another city that also has a WISP. [pic] CHIP ADVANCES: The main obstacles to long distance wireless communications are limitations on battery power and poor power efficiency. Regulation keeps the power levels low and the range of Wi–Fi signals short, to avoid the overcrowding of airwaves. But advances in DSP chips mean that weak signals can be deciphered, lengthening the distance that is practical for transmission, as well as improving distance and speed potential. Moreover, Intel also designed other four businesses which used microprocessor such as servers, workstations, desktops, and mobile. However, these four businesses were not primary opportunity. Until the processor production reached the limitation of hardware as power–hungry, increasing of competitors and shifting of consumers occurred. The barrier of entry is low. Advanced Micro Device (AMD) is the main competitor of Intel because this company created the first 1GHz processor called Athlon chip before Intel in 2000. Intel's next step was reducing a price which impacted on the profitability. Because of the decreasing of revenue in 2001, the CEO, Craig Barrett, conducted two ways which were looking for new ways and finding a reason with solutions of the problem. Both ways took long time to find the solutions. At this period of time, Intel faced inflection point. Apart from the headquarter in California, there was another small team in Israel Design Center (IDC) who worked on Chopaka and Timna, codenames, which brought the changing strategic direction of Intel as Centrino Mobile Technology. The objective of Timna is to reduce the production cost by reducing the size of a die and adding more components in a chip. This processor is cheap and consumes low–power. With pressures both internally and externally, leaders must constantly reassess who, what, when, where, why and how they do business. • 32. The Science Of Desire : Ethnography And Its Proponents Play Summary The article The Science of Desire presents ethnography and its proponents play an important role in modern business world. First, as author Ante (2006) said, "ethnographers' findings often do not lead to a product or service, only a generalized sense of what people want" (p. 100). Even if ethnographers find something, it also needs designers and engineers to make products or services to fit it. This process is not easy, even the findings cannot transmit into products and service. Second, ethnographers' research usually takes a long time, and the result from using the findings needs long time to come out. Therefore, how to use ethnography right is very important. The author gave five advises to do ethnography right. First, "Think Big Thoughts". Companies should used ethnography in big and broad questions, not in small and detailed ones. Second, "Due Diligence". Companies should use the right consultants for their projects. Third, "Start ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To solve these problems a company can implement Wi–Fi on their network. This can reduce the price of implementing additional cable in the network. Wi–Fi technology comes with many upsides, but it also has it downfalls too. Pros The major advantage of Wi–Fi is the fact that users do not need to be physically connected to the network in order to access the Web and network resources. Wi–Fi provides increased mobility. Among employees, those who use a laptop will worry no more about connecting using a connection cable. They will be able to move from their office to the meeting room without losing connection. Besides eliminating much of the need for extensive wiring and dedicated workstation, Wi–Fi means the Internet is accessible anywhere users can pick up a signal, which allows for greater flexibility in office configurations. Wi–Fi systems can also be much less expensive to set up, since the main cost is in the wiring to the main router. If an existing wired Internet network is already in place, adding Wi–Fi capabilities is relatively simple, with no need to purchase a dedicated workstation. Wi–Fi systems are also relatively inexpensive to operate and easy to use. For employees and authorized visitors to connect to Wi–Fi does not present any technical difficulty. Depending on the router type simply enter the WEP or WAP key associated with your Wi–Fi after double–clicking the icon "Wireless Network Connection". After a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Computers And The Price Of Prices Essay Price had never been this low where a desktop costs only $499, whereas laptops are hovering around $1100. Yet do not forget the $500 Apple mini sub compact laptop or the Apple iBook laptop that sells for $650, and the stripped down $400 after rebate laptops companies like Gateway and eMachine are flooding the market with to make money on volume of sales instead of a high price margin. The problem is even if the price of PCs plummets the effect is not felt immediately, because people do not rush to change their PC despite the fact they are getting it cheaper, which means the PC turnover rate is low like most durable goods. That might be what is contributing to the declining of prices, as the assumption of the manufacturers might be that if the price goes low enough people might want to change their computer to avail themselves the latest add–ons. Even the add–ons themselves seem to have reached their zenith some time ago and the latest most alluring gadget that came into existence was CD/DVD RW and every reasonably priced desktop or laptop is equipped with it. However, it does not mean the makers of PCs are not coming up with new functionality, add–ons, and price reductions to woo buyers. The other recent addition was Wi Fi that got boost from the introduction of Intel 's Centrino mobile technology chip and it had added a lot to the mobility of laptops, which can access the Internet wherever hot spots are available. Other than that, the overall performance of PCs despite ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
