Life Of Pi Questions
Life of PiContent QuestionsPart 1: Toronto & Pondicherry – Chapters 1–361). Pondicherry was the
birth place of Pi the protagonist of the story. It was during Pi's time in Pondicherry that he has
suffered intensely and found comfort in religion and zoology; which proves to be the basis of the
stories plot. With this in mind, he was raised in a time where there were many political problems
arising which leads to Pi's family leaving the country to Canada. This town is an appropriate choice
for Pi's upbringing as it is part of French India which contributes to his name, and way of life. 2).
Early in the novel, we discover that the narrator majored in religious studies and zoology, with
particular interests in a "sixteenth–century Kabbalist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the book it talks about the difference between a person with faith and a person without. When Pi
states that, "the agnostic, if he stays true to his reasonable self, if he stays beholden to dry, yeastless
factuality, might try to explain the warm light bathing him by saying, "Possibly a f–f–failing
oxygenation of the b–b–brain," and, to the very end, lack imagination and miss the better story".
Spoken by Pi, this quotation–[chapter 22] in its entirety emphasizes the important distinction
between facts and imagination, the background of the entire novel. This was used to show the
distinct division between people with faith and people without, linking faithless people as "dry
yeastless factuality", and people with faith being able to see "the better story". 8). Mr. Patel uses his
zoo–keeping abilities and knowledge of animal behavior to demonstrate to Ravi and Pi what dangers
there are within a zoo by starving a tiger for three days and feeding it a live goat, which it then tears
to shreds. He shows his children that things are not as they seem, in this case, something cute and
cuddly being ferocious and life threatening. The feminist theory can be applied because the tiger
was given all male attributes and not one female attribute. Also, it was the male [father's] job to
teach the children harsh lessons, where as the mother comes to their aid and comforts them. 9). The

Chapter Analysis : ' Harry Potter '
Audrey Loeffler Fields English period 1 March 9, 2014 Forget Harry Potter, This is the Boy Who
Lived Pi is an incredible individual. He went on an inconceivable journey that changed him
mentally. There was no way he would come back the as the same person. After going through a
shipwreck, he refuses to believe that he might really be stranded. When he acknowledges that he
really is lost, Pi kills for the first time for the sake of survival. His physical and religious limits are
tested immensely and it transforms him forever. Pi has a definite reason to go on this journey. He
explains his shock upon discovering the sinking ship, "I couldn't believe my eyes. What was this
water doing here?... Down there was where my family was" (Martel 129). It was that he had no
choice. Pi's life was thrown head first into a shipwreck, his happiness ground to a halt. He lost his
family in his call to adventure. He has nothing to lose, until his shock drives him to near insanity,
"Ravi was right. Truly I was to be the next goat. I had a wet, trembling, half–drowned, heaving and
coughing three–year–old adult Bengal tiger in my lifeboat" (Martel 124). Shock is a powerful thing.
Pi was so stunned he did not realize that he was helping a tiger into his lifeboat until it was too late.
There is now absolutely no way Pi will not have an adventure. Staying alive is adventure enough.
That is not to say Pi wants an adventure. Pi's wants, his desires for a normal life with his family has

Abols And Symbolism In Yann Martel's Life Of Pi
Do bananas really float? This is a problem that two characters in Life of Pi struggled comprehending
towards the end of the the story. Life of Pi by Yann Martel is about a boy named Pi Patel that ends
up stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger, in the Pacific. In Life of Pi a major key thematic statement
that Yann Martel makes during Pi's journey is that "just because things may seem unrealistic, it
doesn't mean that people cannot overcome or complete a task". Yann uses the island's setting, Pi's
religious development, and the banana symbolism to deliver his thematic message.
First unrealistic task that came about would be the island's setting, along the unusual setting in
general. Not very often, if ever is it usual to hear about being stranded on an acidic island with a
tiger, but as we can see from Yann's story it can happen. Yann sets Pi running into an acidic island
made of no soil, but alge instead. As Pi is explaining to the investigators, they have a really hard
time believing Pi. Pi had been through a lot during his journey, and Yann adds how Pi is hoarding
food from being so traumatized. "He's already had plenty and most he hasn't even eaten. There right
underneath his bed sheet." The men seeing these actions done by Pi, confuses them and that even
leads to them not thinking that the story he is telling is true. As they continue to listen to Pi he adds
things like how he wasn't the first human on this carnivorous island. Pi continues on by explaining
how there

How Does Santosh Patal Present The Characters In Life Of Pi
Santosh Patel is Pi's father. He managed his zoo in India. He is raised a Hindu but he is not religious.
Yann Martin uses indirect characterization to describe Santosh Patal's characteristics. In Life of Pi,
Santosh Patal is characterized as a person who being rational and irreligious in order to show how
he educates his son, Pi and reveal his rational thoughts in the story.
Santosh Patal's rational thoughts influence Pi's living judgment ability. "I'm going to show you how
dangerous tigers are, I want you to remember this lesson for the rest of your lives" (Life of Pi 43).
Santosh thinks the tigers are bestial. Their eyes only have their own reflection. Santosh Patal wants
to prove his idea, so he tells Pi do not get nearer and nearer to

A Controversial Issue Of Pi
A controversial issue for this book would definitely be the religion. Pi's mother and father found it
totally absurd to have more than one religion, and contradicting ones at that. As did the pandit, the
priest, and the imam. In the book, there is a three–page long argument between the priest, the imam,
the pandit, and Pi's parents all claiming the other is mistaken and that Pi is a Muslim or a Hindu or a
Christian. Pi blurts out, "Bapu Gandhi said, 'All religions are true.' I just want to love God," (Martel
69). Another controversial issue dealing with Life of Pi that is not necessarily in the book but rather
dealing with people who have read the book. Many people believe the story Pi tells about being at
sea with the animals is truth, while others believe it is with people. There have actually been debates
on whether or not the people version is true. Which, in the book, it says, "So tell me, since it makes
no factual difference to you and you can't prove the question either way, which story do you prefer?
Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without animals?" (Martel 317). It does
not actually state which story is the truth, but the reader must make their own inference to piece
together what they think.
Yann Martel was born June 25, 1963. His parents are civil servants and were of French–Canadian
descent. In the years of his childhood, Martel lived in many places including Costa Rica, France,

Faith In Life Of Pi, By Yann Martel And Pi
Yann Martel and Pi from the beginning of the novel "Life of Pi" were trying to win over your trust.
Martel knew from the beginning this would be a hard story to believe, but what people don't realize
is there is a story in a story. From the start, Martel knew he had a very difficult task at hand from the
jump, making a nearly impossible story seem believable. Martel used both he and Pi's words in the
book, the difference is that Martel made his words italicized and Pi's normal. It's almost as it seems
that Martel's words mean nothing and he is just re–assuring you that the book is from the viewpoint
of Pi, not him. Martel and Pi both mention faith many times in this book and it makes you think that

hard story to tell sometimes, even miracles are tough to get the point across. Martel and Pi both gain
credibility as the novel goes on which is well deserved. Without the credibility this story would be a
difficult task for Martel to overcome. His constraints he was dealing with were very challenging to

Survival At The Cost Of Mortality In Literature
The theme of survival at the cost of morality is evident in an abundant amount of literature seen
today. This type of literature is studied everywhere from school classrooms to reading on an
individual's free time. Morality relates to what behavior is considered right or wrong based on an
individual's ethics. Sometimes a person may do things that they did not originally intend to do, but
they feel as if they have to behave this way to get what they want, or even survive. The characters
discussed in this English course that have displayed the quality of survival at the cost of mortality is
Pi, Claudius, and Hamlet. The most obvious example of a character that had to go against his morals
to survive is Pi from Yann Martel's Life of Pi. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hamlet is one of the most prominent characters discussed in the duration of the class because he is a
very diverse character. The first time Hamlet appears in the play Hamlet is when is hurt by his
mother's remarriage to Claudius: "...Why she, even she–/ O God, a beast that wants discourse of
reason/ Would have mourned longer!–married with my/ uncle,/ My father's brother..." (I, ii, 153–
157). In this quotation, Hamlet compares Gertrude to an animal, saying that an animal would mourn
longer for its mate. By saying this, it further proves the emotional damage that this marriage brought
upon him. However, anyone would be upset if their mother ended up marrying their deceased
husband's brother, especially when the brother is the one that killed her husband. Although this is
not known by the reader or Hamlet yet because it is reveal shortly after. When Hamlet speaks to the
ghost of his father and discovered that his father was not bitten by a snake and was actually
murdered by Claudius, he has a plan: "As I perchance hereafter shall think meet/ To put an antic
disposition on" (I, v, 191–192). Saying that he will put an "antic disposition" on really means that he
will begin to act crazy to cover up his feelings and plans of seeking revenge on King Claudius.
Hamlet does this so the other citizens of Denmark will not realise that anything is wrong and that he

Theme Of Survival In Life Of Pi
Survival is the key to any species continuing to exist, many of us manage to jeopardize our state of
well–being to sustain ourselves, resulting to violent motives and immoral urges. In the novel Life of
Pi by Yann Martel, character Pi Patel – stranded at sea, accompanied by animals due to a ship
sinking that serves as the main purpose of the book – is a great representation of the hardships a
person goes through in order to survive. By viewing through the perspectives of how all animals are
dangerous by nature, the cruel acts men will do in order to live, and overlooking individual morals,
Pi reveals that in a life or death situation, survival will always overshadow one's humanity. This
close analysis of the theme of survival proves that it has a big role in our everyday lives, as when
our life is being threatened, there are no limits an animal will go in order to survive. One of the first
ways Pi proves how survival outweighs humanity is through his observation that all animals are
dangerous by nature. For example, Pi's father addresses to never get comfortable around animals and
says "Life will defend itself no matter how small it is. Every animal is ferocious and dangerous"
(Martel 41). This is a pivotal moment for Pi, as even though some animals may seem harmless, they
can instantly turn into a savage due to their genetically hard–wired behaviours when feeling
threatened. Moreover, Pi's father decided to prove a point as to how dangerous the animals can be by

Analysis Of Richard Parker 's ' The Last Animal '
The last animal, Richard Parker, symbolizes Pi, his animal like instincts when he was stranded at
sea, as he must complete many tasks to survive which in the real world he would find very hard to
do. Richard Parker can symbolize many things, Pi himself and Pi's fears. Richard Parker represents
Pi himself, and his inner strength. In Mexico, when Richard Parker left Pi and is never to be seen
again, it shows that Richard Parker was only what Pi needed for strength and that he never was real.
He also represents Pi's fears, and how he overcomes all of his fears, mainly his major fear; death.
The skills Pi had learned at his father's zoo helped him face his fear of Richard Parker and in order
to tame Richard Parker, he pretends that he is at a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This time he had gave him a new start, and it helped Pi to equally grow and to expand as a person.
This is shown by the fact that Pi had left his vegetarianism, because if he wanted to survive, he had
to kill and eat fish. That is not it though, as he also had to learn how to take care of himself and
survive on his own since his parents were not on the lifeboat with him. Although in the moment this
may have been hard for Pi to do, but in the end it only had a positive outcome on him. After his
journey was over, he was a much more respecting, thankful, stronger more mature person. The cargo
ship, the Tsimtsum, is also symbolic. The family was forced to Canada from India due to
government issues. All the animals from the zoo are put on the ship, the family is excited, and all is
well. The ship leaves and Pi is enjoying the journey so far, as everyone is. At the beginning the ship
is smooth sailing, until the devastating storm comes and the ship sinks. The Tsimtsum sinking is
symbolic of Pi's life. When Pi was stranded out in the ocean all alone, it was taking a great toll on
him emotionally, Pi just stops everything and takes a break, he says; "I looked out at the empty
horizon. There was so much water. And I was all alone. All alone. I burst into hot tears. I buried my
face in my crossed arms and sobbed. My situation was patently hopeless" (Martel 187). His life was

Dichotomies In Life Of Pi
Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, follows a boy named Pi as he floats aboard a lifeboat through the Pacific
Ocean; joining him on this journey is a tiger, affectionately named Richard Parker. Pi, himself, is a
bright boy who is Hindu by birth, but goes on to become devout in both Islam and Christianity,
refusing to acknowledge the antagonist relationship between these beliefs. Pi's family were once
zookeepers, and decided to move from their home in India to Canada following the economic
collapse of their zoo. In the middle of their voyage across the sea, their ship sinks in a treacherous
storm, leaving Pi, a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, an orangutan, and a tiger aboard a lifeboat.
As the days go by, the hyena grown hungry and attacks the zebra. After the hyena has eaten the
zebra, it turns its appetite towards the orangutang, who puts up a tremendous fight, but ultimately ...

As I had not been raised in a religious home, the construct seemed foreign to me. I failed to see its
purpose in the lives of those around me. In the novel, Martel presents two dichotomies: the story of
Pi and the beasts, or the story of man and a struggle to survive (the cook, crewman, and mother).
While the latter seems more acceptable on its face, the former presents a beautiful story filled with
meaning. Through Martel's writing, I see religion less as an identification or a label, but rather as a
lens in which a follower views the world. Where I might see the ordinary, others may see the divine.
This novel inspired me to be more accepting of religion and its purpose for its followers. The book
also helped me consider flaws in human nature – flaws that I often found in myself. This complex
novel was written so beautifully that it inspired me to become a better writer, a better thinker, and,
more importantly, increasingly accepting of the others and the lenses through which they understand

The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent
love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a
Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes. The ship sinks. Pi finds
himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and
Richard Parker, a 450–pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear,

If he makes it to land, Pi wonders whether to tell the truth about his harrowing adventure or make up

whose family owns a zoo in Pondicherry, India, but decides to move to Canada when he is 16. They
manage to sell many of the animals, some of which are also bound for Canada or the United States;
they are all aboard the same Japanese cargo ship the Tsimtsum. As soon as the boat reaches the open
Pacific, it sinks. Pi manages to get aboard a lifeboat, and then discovers he shares it with a wounded
zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, and a Bengal tiger. Soon only the tiger is left, and Pi does not want to
be the next meal. So his job is to act as zookeeper, catching enough fish and gathering enough fresh
water to feed both the tiger and himself, as well as establishing separate territories for himself and
the tiger. And then there is the long, slow drift across the ocean. It is not giving away anything to say
that Pi and the tiger, named Richard Parker make it to Mexico, this is given to the readers at the end
of part one so that they focus on the story as opposed to worrying themselves sick with the suspense
of whether they will survive or not. It took 227 days, a truly amazing feat of survival. The tiger is

Life Of Pi And Slumdog Millionaire Comparison
Life, as they say, is a journey, and that's never so clear as when watching a life story unfold in the
hands of a masterful film director. In Life of Pi, the voyage is both literal and symbolic, as the title
character is forced to traverse the high seas under Grimms' fairy tale–like circumstances that must
be seen to be – well, if not believed, then at least experienced at a deep level. At the same time, the
young, Indian lead character, a devoted spiritual seeker, undergoes an intense inner journey as well.
Slumdog Millionaire, the multi–Academy Award winning 2008 film, similarly explores a young,
Indian's life journey as he navigates the Dickensian streets of Mumbai, constantly relying on his
wiles to survive, while also seeking love and, ultimately, fabulous wealth and the respect he
deserves. In both films, the main character's stories are told in flashback to authorities who don't
initially believe them. This device is used as a way to heighten the other–worldly nature of both
plots. In Slumdog, every flashback explains how the longtime ... Show more content on

Summary Of The Book 'Hi ! My Name's Ratha'
Hi! My name's Ratha. For my independent novel project, I chose the book 'Life of Pi', written by
Yann Martel.
Life of Pi is about an Indian teenager named Piscine Molitor Patel. He was named after a French
swimming pool, and he changes his name to Pi after everyone started to call him "Pissing". His
father is a zoo owner, and his family lives in Pondicherry, a French colony on India's eastern coast.
Pi's dad decides to leave India and move his entire zoo to Canada, crossing the Pacific ocean on a
Japanese cargo ship named the Tsumtsum.
In a severe storm the Tsimtsum sinks. The cause of the sinking is unknown. Pi is the only human
survivor, and he's stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Pi tries to tame

Life Of Pi By Yann Martel
Everyone must learn to overcome, or acclimate to fear. It is an unavoidable part of life. People do
not usually address all of their fears at one time, but occasionally, unlikely situations occur. In Life
Of Pi, by Yann Martel, Piscine (Pi) Patel overcomes many fears, in a slight 227 days aboard a
lifeboat, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He and his family are in the process of moving, when
the Tsimtsum, the boat they are boarding, mysteriously sinks. Pi is the only survivor, along with an
orangutan, a zebra, a hyena, and a Bengal tiger. Although many themes are present, the most
prominent through the whole book is learning to live with and overcome the very thing that causes
the most grief, the most anxiety, and a lot of reflection; Fear.
At the beginning of Life of Pi, Pi Patel has to adapt to his new situation, and the constant fear of his
newfound boatmate, a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Pi, a vegetarian must learn to survive,
which in his situation, involves the killing and eating of animals. To preserve his life, he must
distance himself from his former life of vegetarianism. "I wept heartily over this poor little deceased
soul. It was the first sentient being I had ever killed. I was now a killer. I was now as guilty as Cain.
I was sixteen years old, a harmless boy, bookish and religious, and now I had blood on my hands.
It's a terrible burden to carry. All sentient life is sacred. I never forget to include this fish in my
prayers." (Martel, 183). Pi has

The impact on the characters especially the main ones such as Pi and Richard Parker, the
relationship between the setting and the mood and the change of setting and the overall effect show
in different ways the importance of setting in the telling of a story. In any story you read or tv show
you watch there is always a different and unique setting that helps to give depth and meaning to
what the author is trying to portray. If setting was not taken into consideration and things just
happened in our bedrooms or backyards it would make things very boring and confusing. If there
was no setting at all talked about in the book it would make it bland and wouldn't make you want to
read it. As well you wouldn't get that in depth understanding of the book. This is why setting is so
key in any story but specifically in Life of Pi because majority of the story takes place in different
and important places and it is significant in helping the reader to really appreciate the

Yann Martel manipulates the narrative style and structural devices within this passage to support the
will to survive theme that is present in Life of Pi. Before the shipwreck, Pi was a spiritual individual
with a strong appreciation for the joy and peace in life. Pi commonly experienced cruelty and doubt
from his family and friends; however, he remained calm by following the guidance from his three
religions. After the shipwreck, the spirituality within Pi's life was tampered with because the chaotic
and brute actions of the animals threatened to separate Pi from his peaceful demeanour. At first, Pi
maintained his interaction with God, but as the days passed and the conditions worsened, Pi's animal
instincts began to develop. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Richard Parker is a manifestation of the qualities that Pi needs; however, an abundance of these
qualities will contribute to Pi's downfall. This concept is also represented later in the book when the
blind French cook tries to trick Pi. The cook's primitive side overpowered him, causing him to die in
the jaws of Richard Parker. If Pi did not tame his savagery, he would have been consumed by it,
which would be represented by a fatal attack from Richard Parker. While contemplating the
confrontation of his survival instincts, Pi says, "to know that and to apply it are two very different
things" (Martel 246). This quotation describes the concept of survival in a lifeboat and in the real
world. In both settings, it is difficult to deny yourself access to something that is lurking inside of
you and pushing with so much force. Whether this quality is easily spotted or difficult to uncover, it
is important to study it and decide if it is changing your character. Fortunately, Pi discovered early in
his journey that the primitive qualities he was developing for survival were threatening to dominate
him. After taming his savagery, Pi is pleased with his decisions and says "Isn't that what all
survivors say?" (Martel 247). This quotation depicts the satisfaction in taming your inner self, while

The Stone Angel
Margaret Laurence's story of The Stone Angel is about the life Hagar Currie an emotionless,
stubborn and proud woman. Margaret Laurence uses this stone angel, originally bought by Hagar's
father, to embody the qualities of Hagar. These virtues are often identical to those one assumes are
possessed by the stone angel and are paralleled many times by Laurence. Throughout the novel,
Hagar relives her life through her memories.
Over the course of the novel, one realizes that Hagar's loneliness and depression are, in fact, brought
on by her pride, detached emotions, obstinacy and ignorance which she uses, subconsciously or not,

Morality Of Animals In Life Of Pi, By Yann Martel
Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, follows the life of Piscine Molitor Patel who physically endured
over two hundred days on a directionless lifeboat with only a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker as
a companion. When Pi is first recovered and put into a hospital, he is forced to recount his detailed
story to a couple of judgemental Japanese correspondents, Mr.Okamoto and Mr.Chiba, who not only
do not believe his story, but laugh in his face as he vocalizes it. They believe Pi's tale is nothing
more than just that; a fictional tale which he invented. Despite Pi embellishing the events that
occurred into almost complete fiction and unbelievability, such events did happen, just not in the
same way Pi explains. With taking Mamaji's initial promise into consideration, Pi's story involving
animals is the better story. To begin Martel's novel Mamaji says that Pi's story was one that would
make one believe in God. The story without animals is not only brutal, depressing, and traumatizing
but it also disregards the fun of believing in something for the sole purpose of wanting to. Pi Patel
furthers this idea when he says "If you stumble at mere believability, what are you living for?...Love
is hard to believe, ask any lover. Life is hard to believe, ask any scientist. God is hard to believe, ask
any believer. (Martel 297). Pi explains it best, his story with animals may be unbelievable;however,
unbelievable things occur every day. He agrees with the condescending Japanese men, in the aspect
that his story is unimaginable, yet challenges them by forcing them to think. The animals story
allowed Pi to believe the unbelievable in order to save his own humanity. Pi's belief that Richard
Parker was real, permitted him to push away the realistic trauma he would've endured if he faced the
truth. In the beginning of Martel's novel, Pi is a young, pure, innocent, pacifistic, vegetarian boy
who just wants something to believe in, a purpose. Pi allows Richard Parker, his very own, large
orange symbol of hope, be the survival side of himself that he has yet to accept. He is constantly
running from his behavior by placing it onto Richard Parker. This allows Pi to think the tiger saves
his inner past version of himself. "It was

as the overly sunny teacher tried to drag her into the overly sunny classroom. Her dad leaned down
and told her to make a wish. Tearfully, Liz asked her daddy to stay with her. He promised to never
leave. On the first day of school after her father's funeral, Monica [Liz's mother] dropped Liz off for
the first time. Monica didn't try to hug her, and Liz didn't ask her to stay. (Zhang 73)
As a preschool child, Liz's best friend is her father. He takes her out on little expeditions when they

contributes to her decision to crash her car and she specifically chooses the same day that her father
died on. Liz wants her mother to only suffer through one day of pain a year, believing that her

Religion In Life Of Pi
Have you ever been stuck on a boat with a famished bengal tiger for 227 days? I thought not. The
novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel is about a teenage boy who is the 'sole survivor' of a sunken ship,
leaving behind his dead mother, father and brother. He then is stranded on the ocean for 227 days
with a bengal tiger named Richard Parker (who was also on the ship as well before it sank). Martel
uses Pi's arduous journey to demonstrate that Pi uses his faith in God to survive throughout it all,
proving that God was with him, rather than achieving the opposite effect. For proof of this, notice
how Martel illustrates Pi's mental survival and growth throughout his expedition with the help of his
faith in God.
The first point in the novel that goes to prove that God is with Pi throughout his journey is in the
beginning when Martel sets the scene and elaborately describes to the reader how devoted Pi is to
his combination of religions. It starts off with part 1, chapter 7, "Religion will save us," I said. Since
when I could remember, religions had always been close to my heart. "Religion?" Mr. Kumar
grinned broadly. "I don't believe in religion. Religion is darkness." (Martel, 27). Pi is so strong and
confident in his faith that he can boldly make a controversial statement in front of his Biology
teacher. Pi's faith is revealed again in part 1, chapter 23 when Pi's different religious leaders run into
each other and begin to discuss Pi. "The pandit spoke first. "Mr. Patel,

Life of Pi by Yann Martel Essay
Life of Pi by Yann Martel, first published in 2002, is the story of Piscine Molitor Patel. Piscine, later
shortened by himself to Pi, is the main character, the protagonist, and throughout most of this novel
just a teenager. At the beginning of the story the reader is taken to the world of Pondicherry, India
and to the Pondicherry Zoo run by the Patel Family. The Patel family consists of Pi's mom, Gita, his
dad Santosh and his older brother Ravi. As Pi grows up he takes you through his good and bad
times, he takes you through the four religions. Yes, four! He submerges in the realm of Hinduism,
Islam, Christianity, and Atheism. He is a Christian, Hindu, and Islamic, all at once. He says on that,

They remain together throughout this 277 day voyage, coming across a huge ship, a man that gets
eaten by Richard, a flesh eating island, and finally Mexico. The third and final part of this book is
called Benito Juarez Infirmary, Tomatlan, Mexico. This part is a manuscript from two workers from
the Japanese Ministry of Transport, who found out that Pi finally landed. They came to find out
exactly why the ship sank. Pi doesn't know for sure why it sank, but he tells the his story. They don't
believe that he survived all that time with a Bengal tiger. So he tells them another version just as
graphic with replacing the hyena with a cook from the ship, his mom as the orangutan, and a sailor
as the hurt zebra. He of course replaced himself with the tiger. The workers weren't thrilled with this
story either but all Pi says is, "In both stories the ship sinks, my entire family dies, and I suffers"
(317). One replies' "yes, that's true." He then tells them that since they can't tell the truth to take the
story that they prefer, and go with God. This book was a gripping story that keeps you reading from
beginning to end. When I started reading this book I received different responses, from oh it was
amazing to that was pure crap. I took both opinions into count and picked it up to start reading. The
beginning started out to slow for my taste but I stayed with it, eventually I got immersed in the story.

Zoology And Religion In Yann Martel's Life Of Pi
Martel (2002:19) "I know zoos are no longer in people good graces and religion faces the same
problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both". Through this quote the reader notice
that there are aspects related between zoology and religion in Life of Pi. In the beginning of the
novel we are introduced to zoology and religion. The author make it clear to the reader that Pi had
majors in both subjects zoology and religion and later use that knowledge to help him do things one
can say is impossible.
"Zoology is defined as the scientific study of animals (YourDictionary)". Zoology has always been a
very big factor throughout Pi's childhood as he grew up with a father who ran a zoo. Pi was awarded
for being the best student in zoology and because of his excellence and the knowledge he had about
Zoology he was able to help his father in the zoo. Pi's father realized that he Pi was interested in

Yann Martel used thirst as an important element throughout the book. It is also linked to the tiger's
original name. Pi is not physical or mentally thirsty for water but rather for the spirit of God.
Through Pi's thirst for God's spirit Yann Martel creates a link to the Bible and Pi as the savior, Christ
died in a hard way but only complained about being thirsty. Yann Martel compares Christ's suffering
with the suffering of Pi on the lifeboat with no water. With that aspects being compared the reader
can already estimate the future conditions that there will be a positive outcome of Pi's tragic journey
just like there was with Christ. Pi could not let his fear for the tiger stand in his way of being alive.
If he would have allowed that, that would have caused him to get scared, lose his concentration and
becoming vulnerable to the tiger. Deep down he knew there was a living God that will help and

From Novel to Film: The Strong Urge to Survive in Life of Pi
The will to live is a strong urge of survival that occurs when one's life is threatened. The novel and
film Life of Pi is about a boy named Piscine Molitor Patel who is lost in the middle of the Pacific
Ocean due to a shipwreck with a 450 pound Bengal Tiger. The theme that fits the novel and film the
best is the will to live. The novel and film effectively prove the theme by using symbols to portray
how badly Pi wants to live. Characterization also plays an important role in proving the theme as the
novel and book show how Pi and his tiger have to change themselves to live. Cinematic techniques
such as different types of camera angles are used as well to prove that the will to live is the essential
theme in the film. In the novel, Yann Martel shows how the camera angles prove what they prove.
The film and novel Life of Pi effectively capture the theme of the will to live by the effective use of
symbolism, characterization, and cinematic techniques.
To start off, the novel Life of Pi displays hope and survival through symbolism using the colour
orange. While Pi is in the ocean, there is orange all around him. Shortly after Pi falls into the ocean
and is swimming, he says that the ocean is "black and cold and in rage" (Martel 117). As one can
imagine, it's almost impossible to survive in an ocean that is in rage but he gets onto the life boat
and survives. After he

Metamoratives In Life Of Pi By Yann Martel
In the novel Life of Pi (2001) written by Yann Martel the story is about a young man by the name of
Piscine Molitor Patel whose whole life changes in a blink of an eye and finds himself suddenly
stuck with a Bengal tiger by the name of Richard Parker after he faces a shipwreck and loses his
family. Yann brings the book to life when he puts imagination into it. In the first section of the
novel, the book covers Pi's childhood and how he majors in religious studies and zoology. In the
second section of the novel, Pi's transition into a man and how he brings out the animal in him is
what basically gets him and Richard Parker to survive for so long and not die. Pi does risky things in
this section for example when he chooses to train Richard Parker rather than to kill him and kills
baby sharks as well to eat them later on. Richard Parker becomes very important for Pi because Pi
did not want to be left alone on the raft. In part three of the novel, two Japanese investigators visit Pi
while he is in the hospital and Pi chooses to give his own story which gets the men kind of upset
because they feel like he invents it up but he chooses to give them that story for a reason and the
men did not seem to get why. Zoomorphism is one of the main metanarratives that stands out
throughout the novel. In Part One of the novel, the author constantly foreshadows events for the
readers. The character Pi states that an event that happened in his life that shapes who he became. Pi

The movie–based film the life of pi was based on the award winning novel the life of pi. In the film

Religious Allegory In Life Of Pi By Yann Martel
Life of Pi written by Yann Martel uses many literary devices to present the different themes in the
novel; and allegory, along with its many examples, is prevalent in this novel as the number one
mechanism to demonstrate the character and theme growth. Through religious allegory, symbolism,
and imagery, Yann Martel uses Pi and his voice to make readers question the real meaning behind
Life of Pi.
Religious allegory is a large topic in this novel. Yann Martel parallels many characters in this novel
with Religion and Religious figures. When he meets Orange Juice for the first time, he is
overwhelmed with happiness. He even compares her to the 'Virgin Mary' upon first seeing her. Pi
exclaims, "Oh blessed Great Mother, Pondicherry fertility goddess, provider of milk and love,
wondrous arm spread of comfort, terror of ticks, picker–up of crying ones, are you to witness this
tragedy too?" (Martel, 139) The orangutan is not only a metaphor for a religious figure, but is also a
metaphor for his own mother. At the end of the novel, Pi retells the story using people instead of
animals, because the rescuers will not believe a story this fantastical using animals. His mother is
seen through Orange Juice's feelings and maternal actions; it was almost like she takes on the
feelings and experiences (and sufferings) of the passengers on the boat. The religious allegory with
the raft arises when the tiger surfaces onto the same level of the boat as Pi; where he had been
hiding. With these

The Human Condition Of The World
The Human Condition can be argued to be in a crisis with its position in modern society.
With a massive decline in personal interaction, corruption in government, and the event of
climate change that has never before been seen in the history of this planet. There are few small
groups around the world that try to make this crisis known to the world, although many world
powers and much of the population choose to either deny or ignore the cry for help. There is a
plethora of ways to spread the word, and one of the most common is through writing; authors
such as Jared Diamond or Al Gore commit their lives to informing the world about the decline of
the human condition. There are also authors that do not rely on pressing these matters ... Show more

Understanding just how temptation, culture and relationships can be interpreted as magic reveals
how these authors use their genre to inform the population of the failing human condition.
When the term "magic" is brought up in any kind of media, the immediate thought of
most people is fairy dust, unicorns, or J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series; although the magic
in Magical Realism is truly none of that at all. The "magic" in Magical Realism comes from the
characters in the novels, through their thoughts and actions they create the magic that exists in
these novels. In these themes the magic reveals itself, they appear as unstoppable forces in
human nature that cannot be derived to an elementary force, and thus appears magical.
Temptation for instance, appears in A Hundred Years of Solitude and Invisible Cities to lure men
to unspeakable fates that impact the rest of their lives and the lives of the people around them.
Although the essence of temptation is an unexplainable force that exists blatantly to lead
humanity away from morality, the same force exists within the other two reoccurring themes that
are seen in Magical Realism. For example, relationships are emphasized and seen often in Life of
Pi and A Hundred Years of Solitude and are put in place to show how they play a key role in the
stories. The same force that deals with temptation

Life Of Pi Compare And Contrast
Yann Martel, the author of Life of Pi, tells a miraculous survival story that everyone will want to
believe. He tells readers about the life a boy, who later in the story gets stuck on a lifeboat with
fierce companions for 227 days. Piscine Molitor Patel, otherwise known as "Pi", accompanies his
family in moving to Canada from India, though the ship sinks and he then tells his journey twice. Pi
told his journey in two versions, an animal version, and a human version. In both versions Pi is
accompanied with a zebra or a sailor, a hyena or a cook, an orangutan or his own mother, and
himself partially known as a tiger (Martel 311). Though the characters in the novel, like Pi, the

Pi admits to the Chinese officials that he had killed the cook a day after the cook had killed his
mother. Though, when Pi mentions the blind Frenchman, it could be that Pi has imagined the cook,
since "He was such an evil man. Worse still, he met evil in me..." (Life of Pi & Martel 309). The
Frenchman had tried to kill Pi, could also be portrayed as evil like the cook; which could have been
one of the reasons Pi had killed this man. Now, Pi is living the memory of the guilt that he has for
killing and possibly eating a human being, even if he had killed to revenge his mother. The blind
Frenchman admits to Pi that he had killed two people, one man and one woman. These two people
could have been the sailor that was on the boat as well as Pi's mother. If Pi did kill and eat the blind
Frenchman/cook when he was blind it could be that he could not bear to watch the terror and fully
admit to what he had done. Though director Ang Lee, does not add this scene into the movie,
possibly due to the fact Pi was blind as well as the man or it would confuse the people who had not
read the book. Though, Pi eating the man would be an explanation of how he had gotten the energy
and strength to get back onto land. Yet, in the animal version Pi could be dreaming this scene in a
different perspective. Just before readers read that Pi is coming upon a carnivorous island, Martel
writes about the dream rag that Pi uses (Martel 236). Pi arrives on the human–shaped island (Life of
Pi), and calls it a "mental delusion" (Martel 257). The island would be another explanation of how
Pi had gotten his strength back, due to the fresh water and greens he had found and consumed. The
body–shaped carnivorous island, symbolizes the cook due to the fact it would turn acidic–like the
cook when he made rash decisions like killing the mother and chopping the sailor's leg off– and eat

Yann Martel's Life
In the first half of Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Pi Patel is a young boy that grows up in India. His
name is actually Piscine, but due to people saying "Pissing" instead, he started going by Pi. His
father owned a zoo, which he visited regularly. As he grows up, he becomes a Hindu, Muslim, and a
Christian. Many people tell him that he can't be all three, but he has to choose one. He claims, "I just
want to love god" (CITATION HERE). Towards the end of the first part, Pi learns that his family is
moving to Canada and they are closing the zoo. His family embarks on a tanker to Vancouver with
some of the animals they were selling to other zoos. Disaster strikes, and the ship is destroyed, but
he manages to find refuge in one of the life rafts. Unfortunately for Pi, a zebra, hyena, orangutan,

Pi dispels the belief that animals in the wild are "more free". He refutes that statement by explaining
animals in the wild do not have glamorous lives, but instead they feel starvation and have to forage
for food every night. Also, he mentions that most animals are habitual creatures. For example, many
things that are out of the ordinary will upset an animal, such as a hose in an unusual place or a
puddle. Finally, he states that, above all else, animals are territorial. An animal in a zoo is no worse
off than an animal in the wild because an animal in a zoo has a routine and unchallenged territory.
He then explains zoomorphism, which is the phenomenon of an animal accepting a different type of
animal or a human as one of their own kind. There are many examples of this, such as dogs
accepting humans as one of their kind. Pi also mentions some occurrences of zoomorphism from his
father's zoo. The rhinoceros in the zoo gets along with the goats in his cage, a single mouse was kept
alive by a snake until a new viper bit it, causing the adults to devour

causes his mind to find ways to cope with all the stress. When asked to describe what happened, Pi
tells two stories: one with him surviving with animals including an adult Bengal tiger named

Pi is at sea for 227 days. Surviving that long alone is nothing short of a miracle. Another thing is that
in Pi's second story, Pi states the tragic events that he is put through. For example, he watched his
mother get murdered, he killed the cook, and he was forced to resort to cannibalism. Pi says, "I
descended to a level of savagery I never imagined possible" (197). This shows his particular struggle
with keeping to his vegetarian way and how much it hurt him that he had to break his vegetarian
ways to survive. All these show why he would want to suppress this experience with a story filled
with animals. Additionally, late in his journey Pi says, "It was natural that, bereft and desperate as I
was, in the throes of unremitting suffering, I should turn to God" (283–284). This shows how
religiously connected he was throughout his journey. In addition, it shows how Pi could have
created the Richard Parker story to align it with a miracle filled story that was created to show belief
in religion can save you. Pi's story's main purpose may be to make the listener believe in god and
attribute his survival to such higher power. Pi's specific reason for creating the Richard Parker story
is unclear, but there is no doubt a multitude of reasons that would justify why Pi would want to
create the Richard Parker story. Unquestionably, both stories have extreme parallelism that

Life Of Pi Internal Conflict
2. One of the main conflicts of the Life of Pi is that between Pi and himself. For 227 days, Pi was at
sea with thoughts to himself thinking of how he "was alone and orphaned, in the middle of the
Pacific" (Martel 107). Being by yourself in the ocean with no idea of if you are going to survive can
lead to negative thoughts. Especially since Pi could only rely on himself. While he did have Richard
Parker, he couldn't "talk" to Richard and expect a reply. His conversations were too himself and he
had to remain sane through this internal conflict. Along with this, he has a conflict with himself and
his lack of knowledge on how to survive at sea. Pi had many questions on his survival like "What
would I eat? What would I drink? How would I keep the sharks away? How would I keep warm?
How would I know which way to go?" (Martel 147). The answers to all of his questions were things

Despite Pi's internal conflict with himself, Pi experiences a great conflict with Richard Parker,
depending on how the reader interprets the book. It is one of the most obvious conflicts of the Life
of Pi and is resolved when Pi and Richard Parker reach land. Upon reaching land, Richard Parker
simply leaves, much to Pi's disappointment. The event is highly unceremonious and Pi says he "was
certain he would turn my way. He would look at me. He would flatten his ears...In some such way,
he would conclude our relationship. He did nothing of that sort" (Martel 284). It was a resolution
that went out in a whimper in both Pi's opinion, as well as my own. While Pi is displeased with this
heart wrenching conclusion, I am satisfied with it. I do wish that Richard Parker did have that one
final look at Pi, but I think this simple conclusion brings out a certain emotion in Pi, along with the
reader, that would not occur had there been an extravagant ending. This conclusion brought me an
immense sadness and longing, almost as if I were Pi in the situation, and I think writing of that

Life Of Pi Short Story
The True Story of Pi Patel The book "The Life of Pi" was an exquisite story where a young boy,
Piscine Patel, experiences hardships like no other. Although it begins with a slow start, it takes a
drastic turn, and everything but Pi's faith in God and religion changes. His faith in God remains
unwavered, although he does get angry and doubts God at some points. He tells a story to obtain a
false sense of reality, but reveals the truth to what actually happened at the end of the book. The
story he told about the animals was an attempt to block out the memories of his mother being
stabbed to death by the cook. Nobody who experiences those feelings wants to, and being on a
lifeboat with a man who killed your mother, you would need a distraction. The distraction Pi had
was creating the fake story about the animals and carnivorous island. Due to the extreme detail he
put into creating the story with Richard Parker, it is hard to say it was all a lie, but what he told the
Japanese investigators was just impossible. There is simply no such thing as a carnivorous island,
and the odds of coming across another blind Frenchman in a lifeboat in the pacific are nearly
impossible. Although the first story is easier for Pi to bear, the second, more gruesome one, is the
true story of what happened. He had 227 days to come up with the detailed story he first told, but the
investigators stated, "We want a story without animals that will explain the sinking of the
Tsimtsum." (Page 168).

This mouse had adapted to living with vipers and was well off, until a young viper bit the mouse,
and as if that young viper broke the seal between that mouse and the vipers, it was immediately
devoured by an adult. Pi concluded that even though animals are aware and able to distinguish the
differences in species, they embrace the companionship in order to ensure that their life isn't
susceptible to change due to this new outside influence. Pi learns that it is possible for animals to
coexist and he is able to use this knowledge in the lifeboat.
By sharing a lifeboat, Pi had a zoomorphic arrangement with Richard Parker, a 450–pound Bengal
tiger. At first, Pi and Richard Parker did not coexist well, but then both had to adapt to living on a
lifeboat with limited supplies and together they went through traumatizing experiences, such as the
storm. By going through this experience with Richard Parker, Pi noticed a bond growing between
them. Pi was first scared of Richard Parker, but then as time went on, he thought of him as a friend
rather than an enemy. To some degree, Pi even loves Richard Parker and sees him as a human. Once
the lifeboat reached Mexico, Richard Parker disappeared into the jungle unceremoniously, which
troubled Pi. Humans often expect goodbyes when someone is leaving from their life and this shows
how Pi had seen Richard Parker as almost human

Analysis Of A Complicated Kindness
Literature is arguably the most significant aspect taught in high school. It allows us to expand our
minds to interpret human nature and its consequences. Several high school curriculums neglect the
importance of improving the novels to better fit current generations, which consequently reduces its
impact. A Complicated Kindness is a novel by Miriam Toews that should be implemented in the
English curriculum, as it not only relates to high schoolers in today's society, but is also deemed one
of the best Canadian books through its personal touch and prominent themes that relate to other
important novels. Novels in the curriculum have a level of significance in the literature world that
evidently shows its importance and authenticity. A Complicated Kindness has been awarded with
several awards such as the prestigious Governor General's Award for English Fiction in 2004 and the
CBA Libris Fiction Award. It has also been regarded as the novel all Canadians should read in the
2006 Canada Reads competition. Numerous critics have noted the personal touch that comes from
Toews extensive background. A critical review from Margaret Boe Birns states, "A Complicated
Kindness explores both the old–fashioned world of the Mennonites and its bete noire of encroaching
modernity––and although the Mennonite community is subjected to a great deal of Toews' brilliant
wit, it is interesting to see the degree in which it survives her interrogation." The author has her own

Martel is the real author of the novel Life of Pi. The story begins with an Author's note, narrated by

his interviews with Pi in the present day. The story has three narrative layers: Yann Martel, author

call it willing suspension of disbelief – which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The extreme poles of this debate are represented in the later part of the novel by the two
investigators from the Japanese government. Mr Okamoto, the head, shows a good example of the
positivist view of truth as an unemotional and factual reality that can be uncovered and verified by
the methods of science. Because, for him, the only judging requirement of human knowledge is
evidence that was actually seen, he dismisses Pi's first story, the story with animals, as "incredible"
(328) and "very unlikely" (332): "We just don't believe there was a tiger living in your lifeboat"
(330). his assistant Mr. Chiba, on the other hand, represents the viewpoint of Romanticism, and,
especially, its focus on Romanticism, and, in particular, its emphasis on spontaneity, subjectivity,
imaginative creativity, and emotion. "What a story" (324), and (in Japanese) "What a horrible story"
(345) are, in chronological order, the only comments he makes on Pi's two stories.Throughout the
investigation, he is over and over again punished by his superior officer for not following the rules

director of the movie needs to make sure that the film does not cut off significant parts, and at the
same time, abstain from the unnecessary parts the writer made without changing the whole theme.
Moreover, they need to add in more characters and scenes to make the film more creative and
understandable. In this essay, the comparison of differences in the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel
and the movie Life of Pi directed by Lee Ann will be discussed.
The setting has not changed when it is transferred to the movie. The settings are: Pondicherry, India;

So Pi's mother forces Pi to work for a dance class to calm down, but one of the dancers soon adapt a
deep relationship with Pi. This situation actually makes Pi's move to Canada more difficult. Thus, it
led to another conjecture of Pi was trying to hide his girlfriend onto the lifeboat and bring her also to
Canada, because in the movie, Pi mentioned, "... but I don't remember saying goodbye."
What books cannot achieve is the sceneries and effects that film can include. Compare to the book,
Lee created more stunning scenes using special effects. When the readers reach to the point of Pi
describing the ocean, they can try their best to imagine the whole landscape and situation, but the
feeling of helplessly floating on the ocean cannot be illustrated using only personal experiences. The
ocean in the movie can remind the audiences about how small people are compared to the world–the
irresistible sense of unknown and tininess, would provoke people to think about their origins. The
sunken scene of the ship "Tsimtsum" is tiny compared to "Titanic", but at the moment of the ship
sank, when Pi is floating on the dark ocean in the night, the drowning feeling that audiences can
experience certainly is not worse than "Titanic".
Lee used lots of scenes and background music to bring immersive feeling to the audiences. When it
reached to the storm scene, the camera

Life Of Pi Questions

  • 1. Life Of Pi Questions Life of PiContent QuestionsPart 1: Toronto & Pondicherry – Chapters 1–361). Pondicherry was the birth place of Pi the protagonist of the story. It was during Pi's time in Pondicherry that he has suffered intensely and found comfort in religion and zoology; which proves to be the basis of the stories plot. With this in mind, he was raised in a time where there were many political problems arising which leads to Pi's family leaving the country to Canada. This town is an appropriate choice for Pi's upbringing as it is part of French India which contributes to his name, and way of life. 2). Early in the novel, we discover that the narrator majored in religious studies and zoology, with particular interests in a "sixteenth–century Kabbalist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the book it talks about the difference between a person with faith and a person without. When Pi states that, "the agnostic, if he stays true to his reasonable self, if he stays beholden to dry, yeastless factuality, might try to explain the warm light bathing him by saying, "Possibly a f–f–failing oxygenation of the b–b–brain," and, to the very end, lack imagination and miss the better story". Spoken by Pi, this quotation–[chapter 22] in its entirety emphasizes the important distinction between facts and imagination, the background of the entire novel. This was used to show the distinct division between people with faith and people without, linking faithless people as "dry yeastless factuality", and people with faith being able to see "the better story". 8). Mr. Patel uses his zoo–keeping abilities and knowledge of animal behavior to demonstrate to Ravi and Pi what dangers there are within a zoo by starving a tiger for three days and feeding it a live goat, which it then tears to shreds. He shows his children that things are not as they seem, in this case, something cute and cuddly being ferocious and life threatening. The feminist theory can be applied because the tiger was given all male attributes and not one female attribute. Also, it was the male [father's] job to teach the children harsh lessons, where as the mother comes to their aid and comforts them. 9). The super alpha male is one who is dominant, ... • 5. Chapter Analysis : ' Harry Potter ' Audrey Loeffler Fields English period 1 March 9, 2014 Forget Harry Potter, This is the Boy Who Lived Pi is an incredible individual. He went on an inconceivable journey that changed him mentally. There was no way he would come back the as the same person. After going through a shipwreck, he refuses to believe that he might really be stranded. When he acknowledges that he really is lost, Pi kills for the first time for the sake of survival. His physical and religious limits are tested immensely and it transforms him forever. Pi has a definite reason to go on this journey. He explains his shock upon discovering the sinking ship, "I couldn't believe my eyes. What was this water doing here?... Down there was where my family was" (Martel 129). It was that he had no choice. Pi's life was thrown head first into a shipwreck, his happiness ground to a halt. He lost his family in his call to adventure. He has nothing to lose, until his shock drives him to near insanity, "Ravi was right. Truly I was to be the next goat. I had a wet, trembling, half–drowned, heaving and coughing three–year–old adult Bengal tiger in my lifeboat" (Martel 124). Shock is a powerful thing. Pi was so stunned he did not realize that he was helping a tiger into his lifeboat until it was too late. There is now absolutely no way Pi will not have an adventure. Staying alive is adventure enough. That is not to say Pi wants an adventure. Pi's wants, his desires for a normal life with his family has clashed with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Abols And Symbolism In Yann Martel's Life Of Pi Do bananas really float? This is a problem that two characters in Life of Pi struggled comprehending towards the end of the the story. Life of Pi by Yann Martel is about a boy named Pi Patel that ends up stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger, in the Pacific. In Life of Pi a major key thematic statement that Yann Martel makes during Pi's journey is that "just because things may seem unrealistic, it doesn't mean that people cannot overcome or complete a task". Yann uses the island's setting, Pi's religious development, and the banana symbolism to deliver his thematic message. First unrealistic task that came about would be the island's setting, along the unusual setting in general. Not very often, if ever is it usual to hear about being stranded on an acidic island with a tiger, but as we can see from Yann's story it can happen. Yann sets Pi running into an acidic island made of no soil, but alge instead. As Pi is explaining to the investigators, they have a really hard time believing Pi. Pi had been through a lot during his journey, and Yann adds how Pi is hoarding food from being so traumatized. "He's already had plenty and most he hasn't even eaten. There right underneath his bed sheet." The men seeing these actions done by Pi, confuses them and that even leads to them not thinking that the story he is telling is true. As they continue to listen to Pi he adds things like how he wasn't the first human on this carnivorous island. Pi continues on by explaining how there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Life of Pi, Santosh Patal is characterized as a person who being rational and irreligious in order to show how he educates his son, Pi and reveal his rational thoughts in the story. Santosh Patal's rational thoughts influence Pi's living judgment ability. "I'm going to show you how dangerous tigers are, I want you to remember this lesson for the rest of your lives" (Life of Pi 43). Santosh thinks the tigers are bestial. • 17. A Controversial Issue Of Pi A controversial issue for this book would definitely be the religion. Pi's mother and father found it totally absurd to have more than one religion, and contradicting ones at that. As did the pandit, the priest, and the imam. In the book, there is a three–page long argument between the priest, the imam, the pandit, and Pi's parents all claiming the other is mistaken and that Pi is a Muslim or a Hindu or a Christian. Pi blurts out, "Bapu Gandhi said, 'All religions are true.' I just want to love God," (Martel 69). Another controversial issue dealing with Life of Pi that is not necessarily in the book but rather dealing with people who have read the book. Many people believe the story Pi tells about being at sea with the animals is truth, while others believe it is with people. There have actually been debates on whether or not the people version is true. Which, in the book, it says, "So tell me, since it makes no factual difference to you and you can't prove the question either way, which story do you prefer? Which is the better story, the story with animals or the story without animals?" (Martel 317). It does not actually state which story is the truth, but the reader must make their own inference to piece together what they think. Yann Martel was born June 25, 1963. His parents are civil servants and were of French–Canadian descent. In the years of his childhood, Martel lived in many places including Costa Rica, France, India, Iran, Mexico, Turkey, Canada, and the United ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Martel knew from the beginning this would be a hard story to believe, but what people don't realize is there is a story in a story. From the start, Martel knew he had a very difficult task at hand from the jump, making a nearly impossible story seem believable. Martel used both he and Pi's words in the book, the difference is that Martel made his words italicized and Pi's normal. It's almost as it seems that Martel's words mean nothing and he is just re–assuring you that the book is from the viewpoint of Pi, not him. It is very complex novel with a lot of things you have to sit back and really think about. This novel was a very well constructed and kept me reading and I never got bored of it. The power of God is a hard story to tell sometimes, even miracles are tough to get the point across. Martel and Pi both gain credibility as the novel goes on which is well deserved. Without the credibility this story would be a difficult task for Martel to overcome. His constraints he was dealing with were very challenging to overcome. • 25. Survival At The Cost Of Mortality In Literature The theme of survival at the cost of morality is evident in an abundant amount of literature seen today. This type of literature is studied everywhere from school classrooms to reading on an individual's free time. Morality relates to what behavior is considered right or wrong based on an individual's ethics. Sometimes a person may do things that they did not originally intend to do, but they feel as if they have to behave this way to get what they want, or even survive. The characters discussed in this English course that have displayed the quality of survival at the cost of mortality is Pi, Claudius, and Hamlet. The most obvious example of a character that had to go against his morals to survive is Pi from Yann Martel's Life of Pi. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hamlet is one of the most prominent characters discussed in the duration of the class because he is a very diverse character. The first time Hamlet appears in the play Hamlet is when is hurt by his mother's remarriage to Claudius: "...Why she, even she–/ O God, a beast that wants discourse of reason/ Would have mourned longer!–married with my/ uncle,/ My father's brother..." (I, ii, 153– 157). In this quotation, Hamlet compares Gertrude to an animal, saying that an animal would mourn longer for its mate. By saying this, it further proves the emotional damage that this marriage brought upon him. However, anyone would be upset if their mother ended up marrying their deceased husband's brother, especially when the brother is the one that killed her husband. Although this is not known by the reader or Hamlet yet because it is reveal shortly after. When Hamlet speaks to the ghost of his father and discovered that his father was not bitten by a snake and was actually murdered by Claudius, he has a plan: "As I perchance hereafter shall think meet/ To put an antic disposition on" (I, v, 191–192). Saying that he will put an "antic disposition" on really means that he will begin to act crazy to cover up his feelings and plans of seeking revenge on King Claudius. • 29. Theme Of Survival In Life Of Pi Survival is the key to any species continuing to exist, many of us manage to jeopardize our state of well–being to sustain ourselves, resulting to violent motives and immoral urges. In the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, character Pi Patel – stranded at sea, accompanied by animals due to a ship sinking that serves as the main purpose of the book – is a great representation of the hardships a person goes through in order to survive. By viewing through the perspectives of how all animals are dangerous by nature, the cruel acts men will do in order to live, and overlooking individual morals, Pi reveals that in a life or death situation, survival will always overshadow one's humanity. This close analysis of the theme of survival proves that it has a big role in our everyday lives, as when our life is being threatened, there are no limits an animal will go in order to survive. One of the first ways Pi proves how survival outweighs humanity is through his observation that all animals are dangerous by nature. For example, Pi's father addresses to never get comfortable around animals and says "Life will defend itself no matter how small it is. Every animal is ferocious and dangerous" (Martel 41). This is a pivotal moment for Pi, as even though some animals may seem harmless, they can instantly turn into a savage due to their genetically hard–wired behaviours when feeling threatened. Moreover, Pi's father decided to prove a point as to how dangerous the animals can be by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Analysis Of Richard Parker 's ' The Last Animal ' The last animal, Richard Parker, symbolizes Pi, his animal like instincts when he was stranded at sea, as he must complete many tasks to survive which in the real world he would find very hard to do. Richard Parker can symbolize many things, Pi himself and Pi's fears. Richard Parker represents Pi himself, and his inner strength. In Mexico, when Richard Parker left Pi and is never to be seen again, it shows that Richard Parker was only what Pi needed for strength and that he never was real. He also represents Pi's fears, and how he overcomes all of his fears, mainly his major fear; death. The skills Pi had learned at his father's zoo helped him face his fear of Richard Parker and in order to tame Richard Parker, he pretends that he is at a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This time he had gave him a new start, and it helped Pi to equally grow and to expand as a person. This is shown by the fact that Pi had left his vegetarianism, because if he wanted to survive, he had to kill and eat fish. That is not it though, as he also had to learn how to take care of himself and survive on his own since his parents were not on the lifeboat with him. Although in the moment this may have been hard for Pi to do, but in the end it only had a positive outcome on him. After his journey was over, he was a much more respecting, thankful, stronger more mature person. The cargo ship, the Tsimtsum, is also symbolic. The family was forced to Canada from India due to government issues. All the animals from the zoo are put on the ship, the family is excited, and all is well. The ship leaves and Pi is enjoying the journey so far, as everyone is. At the beginning the ship is smooth sailing, until the devastating storm comes and the ship sinks. The Tsimtsum sinking is symbolic of Pi's life. When Pi was stranded out in the ocean all alone, it was taking a great toll on him emotionally, Pi just stops everything and takes a break, he says; "I looked out at the empty horizon. There was so much water. And I was all alone. All alone. I burst into hot tears. I buried my face in my crossed arms and sobbed. My situation was patently hopeless" (Martel 187). Dichotomies In Life Of Pi Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, follows a boy named Pi as he floats aboard a lifeboat through the Pacific Ocean; joining him on this journey is a tiger, affectionately named Richard Parker. Pi, himself, is a bright boy who is Hindu by birth, but goes on to become devout in both Islam and Christianity, refusing to acknowledge the antagonist relationship between these beliefs. Pi's family were once zookeepers, and decided to move from their home in India to Canada following the economic collapse of their zoo. In the middle of their voyage across the sea, their ship sinks in a treacherous storm, leaving Pi, a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, an orangutan, and a tiger aboard a lifeboat. As the days go by, the hyena grown hungry and attacks the zebra. After the hyena has eaten the zebra, it turns its appetite towards the orangutang, who puts up a tremendous fight, but ultimately ... In the novel, Martel presents two dichotomies: the story of Pi and the beasts, or the story of man and a struggle to survive (the cook, crewman, and mother). While the latter seems more acceptable on its face, the former presents a beautiful story filled with meaning. Through Martel's writing, I see religion less as an identification or a label, but rather as a lens in which a follower views the world. Where I might see the ordinary, others may see the divine. This novel inspired me to be more accepting of religion and its purpose for its followers. The book also helped me consider flaws in human nature – flaws that I often found in myself. This complex novel was written so beautifully that it inspired me to become a better writer, a better thinker, and, more importantly, increasingly accepting of the others and the lenses through which they understand their ... • 41. Essay on Life of Pi (Unabridged) by Yann Martel The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes. The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450–pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days while lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities that interrogate Pi refuse to believe his ... This novel centers on young Pi Patel, an Indian boy whose family owns a zoo in Pondicherry, India, but decides to move to Canada when he is 16. They manage to sell many of the animals, some of which are also bound for Canada or the United States; they are all aboard the same Japanese cargo ship the Tsimtsum. As soon as the boat reaches the open Pacific, it sinks. Pi manages to get aboard a lifeboat, and then discovers he shares it with a wounded zebra, an orangutan, a hyena, and a Bengal tiger. Soon only the tiger is left, and Pi does not want to be the next meal. So his job is to act as zookeeper, catching enough fish and gathering enough fresh water to feed both the tiger and himself, as well as establishing separate territories for himself and the tiger. And then there is the long, slow drift across the ocean. It is not giving away anything to say that Pi and the tiger, named Richard Parker make it to Mexico, this is given to the readers at the end of part one so that they focus on the story as opposed to worrying themselves sick with the suspense of whether they will survive or not. It took 227 days, a truly amazing feat of survival. The tiger is Pi's suffering, his burden in life. We all have such a bundle that we carry around, and we are very much in danger of being ... • 45. Life Of Pi And Slumdog Millionaire Comparison Life, as they say, is a journey, and that's never so clear as when watching a life story unfold in the hands of a masterful film director. In Life of Pi, the voyage is both literal and symbolic, as the title character is forced to traverse the high seas under Grimms' fairy tale–like circumstances that must be seen to be – well, if not believed, then at least experienced at a deep level. At the same time, the young, Indian lead character, a devoted spiritual seeker, undergoes an intense inner journey as well. Slumdog Millionaire, the multi–Academy Award winning 2008 film, similarly explores a young, Indian's life journey as he navigates the Dickensian streets of Mumbai, constantly relying on his wiles to survive, while also seeking love and, ultimately, fabulous wealth and the respect he deserves. In both films, the main character's stories are told in flashback to authorities who don't initially believe them. This device is used as a way to heighten the other–worldly nature of both plots. • 53. Life Of Pi By Yann Martel Everyone must learn to overcome, or acclimate to fear. It is an unavoidable part of life. People do not usually address all of their fears at one time, but occasionally, unlikely situations occur. In Life Of Pi, by Yann Martel, Piscine (Pi) Patel overcomes many fears, in a slight 227 days aboard a lifeboat, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. He and his family are in the process of moving, when the Tsimtsum, the boat they are boarding, mysteriously sinks. Pi is the only survivor, along with an orangutan, a zebra, a hyena, and a Bengal tiger. Although many themes are present, the most prominent through the whole book is learning to live with and overcome the very thing that causes the most grief, the most anxiety, and a lot of reflection; Fear. At the beginning of Life of Pi, Pi Patel has to adapt to his new situation, and the constant fear of his newfound boatmate, a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Pi, a vegetarian must learn to survive, which in his situation, involves the killing and eating of animals. To preserve his life, he must distance himself from his former life of vegetarianism. "I wept heartily over this poor little deceased soul. It was the first sentient being I had ever killed. I was now a killer. I was now as guilty as Cain. I was sixteen years old, a harmless boy, bookish and religious, and now I had blood on my hands. It's a terrible burden to carry. All sentient life is sacred. The impact on the characters especially the main ones such as Pi and Richard Parker, the relationship between the setting and the mood and the change of setting and the overall effect show in different ways the importance of setting in the telling of a story. In any story you read or tv show you watch there is always a different and unique setting that helps to give depth and meaning to what the author is trying to portray. If setting was not taken into consideration and things just happened in our bedrooms or backyards it would make things very boring and confusing. If there was no setting at all talked about in the book it would make it bland and wouldn't make you want to read it. As well you wouldn't get that in depth understanding of the book. Life Of Pi Close Reading Analysis Close Reading Yann Martel manipulates the narrative style and structural devices within this passage to support the will to survive theme that is present in Life of Pi. Before the shipwreck, Pi was a spiritual individual with a strong appreciation for the joy and peace in life. Pi commonly experienced cruelty and doubt from his family and friends; however, he remained calm by following the guidance from his three religions. After the shipwreck, the spirituality within Pi's life was tampered with because the chaotic and brute actions of the animals threatened to separate Pi from his peaceful demeanour. At first, Pi maintained his interaction with God, but as the days passed and the conditions worsened, Pi's animal instincts began to develop. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Richard Parker is a manifestation of the qualities that Pi needs; however, an abundance of these qualities will contribute to Pi's downfall. This concept is also represented later in the book when the blind French cook tries to trick Pi. The cook's primitive side overpowered him, causing him to die in the jaws of Richard Parker. If Pi did not tame his savagery, he would have been consumed by it, which would be represented by a fatal attack from Richard Parker. While contemplating the confrontation of his survival instincts, Pi says, "to know that and to apply it are two very different things" (Martel 246). This quotation describes the concept of survival in a lifeboat and in the real world. In both settings, it is difficult to deny yourself access to something that is lurking inside of you and pushing with so much force. Whether this quality is easily spotted or difficult to uncover, it is important to study it and decide if it is changing your character. Fortunately, Pi discovered early in his journey that the primitive qualities he was developing for survival were threatening to dominate him. After taming his savagery, Pi is pleased with his decisions and says "Isn't that what all survivors say?" (Martel 247). • 69. Morality Of Animals In Life Of Pi, By Yann Martel Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, follows the life of Piscine Molitor Patel who physically endured over two hundred days on a directionless lifeboat with only a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker as a companion. When Pi is first recovered and put into a hospital, he is forced to recount his detailed story to a couple of judgemental Japanese correspondents, Mr.Okamoto and Mr.Chiba, who not only do not believe his story, but laugh in his face as he vocalizes it. They believe Pi's tale is nothing more than just that; a fictional tale which he invented. Despite Pi embellishing the events that occurred into almost complete fiction and unbelievability, such events did happen, just not in the same way Pi explains. With taking Mamaji's initial promise into consideration, Pi's story involving animals is the better story. To begin Martel's novel Mamaji says that Pi's story was one that would make one believe in God. The story without animals is not only brutal, depressing, and traumatizing but it also disregards the fun of believing in something for the sole purpose of wanting to. Pi Patel furthers this idea when he says "If you stumble at mere believability, what are you living for?...Love is hard to believe, ask any lover. Life is hard to believe, ask any scientist. God is hard to believe, ask any believer. (Martel 297). Pi explains it best, his story with animals may be unbelievable;however, unbelievable things occur every day. He agrees with the condescending Japanese men, in the aspect that his story is unimaginable, yet challenges them by forcing them to think. The animals story allowed Pi to believe the unbelievable in order to save his own humanity. Pi's belief that Richard Parker was real, permitted him to push away the realistic trauma he would've endured if he faced the truth. In the beginning of Martel's novel, Pi is a young, pure, innocent, pacifistic, vegetarian boy who just wants something to believe in, a purpose. Pi allows Richard Parker, his very own, large orange symbol of hope, be the survival side of himself that he has yet to accept. He is constantly running from his behavior by placing it onto Richard Parker. This allows Pi to think the tiger saves his inner past version of himself. "It was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Religion In Life Of Pi Have you ever been stuck on a boat with a famished bengal tiger for 227 days? I thought not. The novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel is about a teenage boy who is the 'sole survivor' of a sunken ship, leaving behind his dead mother, father and brother. He then is stranded on the ocean for 227 days with a bengal tiger named Richard Parker (who was also on the ship as well before it sank). Martel uses Pi's arduous journey to demonstrate that Pi uses his faith in God to survive throughout it all, proving that God was with him, rather than achieving the opposite effect. For proof of this, notice how Martel illustrates Pi's mental survival and growth throughout his expedition with the help of his faith in God. The first point in the novel that goes to prove that God is with Pi throughout his journey is in the beginning when Martel sets the scene and elaborately describes to the reader how devoted Pi is to his combination of religions. It starts off with part 1, chapter 7, "Religion will save us," I said. Since when I could remember, religions had always been close to my heart. "Religion?" Mr. Kumar grinned broadly. "I don't believe in religion. Religion is darkness." (Martel, 27). Pi is so strong and confident in his faith that he can boldly make a controversial statement in front of his Biology teacher. Pi's faith is revealed again in part 1, chapter 23 when Pi's different religious leaders run into each other and begin to discuss Pi. "The pandit spoke first. "Mr. Patel, ... The Strong Urge Of Life Of Pi Jaideep Bajaj Mrs. Jones ENG 2D0–C 15 January, 2015 From Novel to Film: The Strong Urge to Survive in Life of Pi The will to live is a strong urge of survival that occurs when one's life is threatened. The novel and film Life of Pi is about a boy named Piscine Molitor Patel who is lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean due to a shipwreck with a 450 pound Bengal Tiger. The theme that fits the novel and film the best is the will to live. The novel and film effectively prove the theme by using symbols to portray how badly Pi wants to live. Characterization also plays an important role in proving the theme as the novel and book show how Pi and his tiger have to change themselves to live. Cinematic techniques such as different types of camera angles are used as well to prove that the will to live is the essential theme in the film. In the novel, Yann Martel shows how the camera angles prove what they prove. The film and novel Life of Pi effectively capture the theme of the will to live by the effective use of symbolism, characterization, and cinematic techniques. To start off, the novel Life of Pi displays hope and survival through symbolism using the colour orange. While Pi is in the ocean, there is orange all around him. Shortly after Pi falls into the ocean and is swimming, he says that the ocean is "black and cold and in rage" (Martel 117). As one can imagine, it's almost impossible to survive in an ocean that is in rage but he gets onto the life boat and survives. After he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Yann brings the book to life when he puts imagination into it. In the first section of the novel, the book covers Pi's childhood and how he majors in religious studies and zoology. In the second section of the novel, Pi's transition into a man and how he brings out the animal in him is what basically gets him and Richard Parker to survive for so long and not die. Pi does risky things in this section for example when he chooses to train Richard Parker rather than to kill him and kills baby sharks as well to eat them later on. Richard Parker becomes very important for Pi because Pi did not want to be left alone on the raft. In part three of the novel, two Japanese investigators visit Pi while he is in the hospital and Pi chooses to give his own story which gets the men kind of upset because they feel like he invents it up but he chooses to give them that story for a reason and the men did not seem to get why. • 101. Religious Allegory In Life Of Pi By Yann Martel Life of Pi written by Yann Martel uses many literary devices to present the different themes in the novel; and allegory, along with its many examples, is prevalent in this novel as the number one mechanism to demonstrate the character and theme growth. Through religious allegory, symbolism, and imagery, Yann Martel uses Pi and his voice to make readers question the real meaning behind Life of Pi. Religious allegory is a large topic in this novel. Yann Martel parallels many characters in this novel with Religion and Religious figures. When he meets Orange Juice for the first time, he is overwhelmed with happiness. He even compares her to the 'Virgin Mary' upon first seeing her. Pi exclaims, "Oh blessed Great Mother, Pondicherry fertility goddess, provider of milk and love, wondrous arm spread of comfort, terror of ticks, picker–up of crying ones, are you to witness this tragedy too?" (Martel, 139) The orangutan is not only a metaphor for a religious figure, but is also a metaphor for his own mother. At the end of the novel, Pi retells the story using people instead of animals, because the rescuers will not believe a story this fantastical using animals. His mother is seen through Orange Juice's feelings and maternal actions; it was almost like she takes on the feelings and experiences (and sufferings) of the passengers on the boat. The religious allegory with the raft arises when the tiger surfaces onto the same level of the boat as Pi; where he had been hiding. With these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With a massive decline in personal interaction, corruption in government, and the event of climate change that has never before been seen in the history of this planet. There are few small groups around the world that try to make this crisis known to the world, although many world powers and much of the population choose to either deny or ignore the cry for help. There is a plethora of ways to spread the word, and one of the most common is through writing; authors such as Jared Diamond or Al Gore commit their lives to informing the world about the decline of the human condition. There are also authors that do not rely on pressing these matters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Understanding just how temptation, culture and relationships can be interpreted as magic reveals how these authors use their genre to inform the population of the failing human condition. When the term "magic" is brought up in any kind of media, the immediate thought of most people is fairy dust, unicorns, or J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series; although the magic in Magical Realism is truly none of that at all. The "magic" in Magical Realism comes from the characters in the novels, through their thoughts and actions they create the magic that exists in these novels. In these themes the magic reveals itself, they appear as unstoppable forces in human nature that cannot be derived to an elementary force, and thus appears magical. Temptation for instance, appears in A Hundred Years of Solitude and Invisible Cities to lure men to unspeakable fates that impact the rest of their lives and the lives of the people around them.
  • 106. Although the essence of temptation is an unexplainable force that exists blatantly to lead humanity away from morality, the same force exists within the other two reoccurring themes that are seen in Magical Realism. For example, relationships are emphasized and seen often in Life of Pi and A Hundred Years of Solitude and are put in place to show how they play a key role in the stories. • 110. Life Of Pi Compare And Contrast Yann Martel, the author of Life of Pi, tells a miraculous survival story that everyone will want to believe. He tells readers about the life a boy, who later in the story gets stuck on a lifeboat with fierce companions for 227 days. Piscine Molitor Patel, otherwise known as "Pi", accompanies his family in moving to Canada from India, though the ship sinks and he then tells his journey twice. Pi told his journey in two versions, an animal version, and a human version. In both versions Pi is accompanied with a zebra or a sailor, a hyena or a cook, an orangutan or his own mother, and himself partially known as a tiger (Martel 311). Though the characters in the novel, like Pi, the Japanese officials, and the writer, preferred the animal version, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pi admits to the Chinese officials that he had killed the cook a day after the cook had killed his mother. Though, when Pi mentions the blind Frenchman, it could be that Pi has imagined the cook, since "He was such an evil man. Worse still, he met evil in me..." (Life of Pi & Martel 309). The Frenchman had tried to kill Pi, could also be portrayed as evil like the cook; which could have been one of the reasons Pi had killed this man. Now, Pi is living the memory of the guilt that he has for killing and possibly eating a human being, even if he had killed to revenge his mother. The blind Frenchman admits to Pi that he had killed two people, one man and one woman. These two people could have been the sailor that was on the boat as well as Pi's mother. If Pi did kill and eat the blind Frenchman/cook when he was blind it could be that he could not bear to watch the terror and fully admit to what he had done. Though director Ang Lee, does not add this scene into the movie, possibly due to the fact Pi was blind as well as the man or it would confuse the people who had not read the book. Though, Pi eating the man would be an explanation of how he had gotten the energy and strength to get back onto land. Yet, in the animal version Pi could be dreaming this scene in a different perspective. Just before readers read that Pi is coming upon a carnivorous island, Martel writes about the dream rag that Pi uses (Martel 236). Pi arrives on the human–shaped island (Life of Pi), and calls it a "mental delusion" (Martel 257). The island would be another explanation of how Pi had gotten his strength back, due to the fresh water and greens he had found and consumed. The body–shaped carnivorous island, symbolizes the cook due to the fact it would turn acidic–like the cook when he made rash decisions like killing the mother and chopping the sailor's leg off– and eat away ... His name is actually Piscine, but due to people saying "Pissing" instead, he started going by Pi. His father owned a zoo, which he visited regularly. As he grows up, he becomes a Hindu, Muslim, and a Christian. Many people tell him that he can't be all three, but he has to choose one. He claims, "I just want to love god" (CITATION HERE). Towards the end of the first part, Pi learns that his family is moving to Canada and they are closing the zoo. His family embarks on a tanker to Vancouver with some of the animals they were selling to other zoos. Disaster strikes, and the ship is destroyed, but he manages to find refuge in one of the life rafts. Unfortunately for Pi, a zebra, hyena, orangutan, and a Bengal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pi dispels the belief that animals in the wild are "more free". He refutes that statement by explaining animals in the wild do not have glamorous lives, but instead they feel starvation and have to forage for food every night. Also, he mentions that most animals are habitual creatures. For example, many things that are out of the ordinary will upset an animal, such as a hose in an unusual place or a puddle. Finally, he states that, above all else, animals are territorial. An animal in a zoo is no worse off than an animal in the wild because an animal in a zoo has a routine and unchallenged territory. He then explains zoomorphism, which is the phenomenon of an animal accepting a different type of animal or a human as one of their own kind. There are many examples of this, such as dogs accepting humans as one of their kind. Pi also mentions some occurrences of zoomorphism from his father's zoo. • 118. Yann Martel’s Life of Pi Pi Patel in Yann Martel's Life of Pi is a young Indian boy who is put through a tremendous traumatic experience; he gets lost at sea! Not only does he lose all his family, but he is forced to survive 227 days at sea with very limited resources. This ordeal causes great psychological pressure on Pi and causes his mind to find ways to cope with all the stress. When asked to describe what happened, Pi tells two stories: one with him surviving with animals including an adult Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, and a parallel story with humans in which Pi is forced to bend morality. Pi's story of his survival with Richard Parker is a fiction that he creates to cope with a reality that is too difficult to face. Undoubtedly, Pi's story with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pi is at sea for 227 days. Surviving that long alone is nothing short of a miracle. Another thing is that in Pi's second story, Pi states the tragic events that he is put through. For example, he watched his mother get murdered, he killed the cook, and he was forced to resort to cannibalism. Pi says, "I descended to a level of savagery I never imagined possible" (197). This shows his particular struggle with keeping to his vegetarian way and how much it hurt him that he had to break his vegetarian ways to survive. All these show why he would want to suppress this experience with a story filled with animals. Additionally, late in his journey Pi says, "It was natural that, bereft and desperate as I was, in the throes of unremitting suffering, I should turn to God" (283–284). This shows how religiously connected he was throughout his journey. In addition, it shows how Pi could have created the Richard Parker story to align it with a miracle filled story that was created to show belief in religion can save you. Pi's story's main purpose may be to make the listener believe in god and attribute his survival to such higher power. Pi's specific reason for creating the Richard Parker story is unclear, but there is no doubt a multitude of reasons that would justify why Pi would want to create the Richard Parker story. • 122. Life Of Pi Internal Conflict 2. One of the main conflicts of the Life of Pi is that between Pi and himself. For 227 days, Pi was at sea with thoughts to himself thinking of how he "was alone and orphaned, in the middle of the Pacific" (Martel 107). Being by yourself in the ocean with no idea of if you are going to survive can lead to negative thoughts. Especially since Pi could only rely on himself. While he did have Richard Parker, he couldn't "talk" to Richard and expect a reply. His conversations were too himself and he had to remain sane through this internal conflict. Along with this, he has a conflict with himself and his lack of knowledge on how to survive at sea. Pi had many questions on his survival like "What would I eat? What would I drink? How would I keep the sharks away? How would I keep warm? How would I know which way to go?" (Martel 147). The answers to all of his questions were things ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite Pi's internal conflict with himself, Pi experiences a great conflict with Richard Parker, depending on how the reader interprets the book. It is one of the most obvious conflicts of the Life of Pi and is resolved when Pi and Richard Parker reach land. Upon reaching land, Richard Parker simply leaves, much to Pi's disappointment. The event is highly unceremonious and Pi says he "was certain he would turn my way. He would look at me. He would flatten his ears...In some such way, he would conclude our relationship. He did nothing of that sort" (Martel 284). It was a resolution that went out in a whimper in both Pi's opinion, as well as my own. While Pi is displeased with this heart wrenching conclusion, I am satisfied with it. I do wish that Richard Parker did have that one final look at Pi, but I think this simple conclusion brings out a certain emotion in Pi, along with the reader, that would not occur had there been an extravagant ending. • 126. Life Of Pi Short Story The True Story of Pi Patel The book "The Life of Pi" was an exquisite story where a young boy, Piscine Patel, experiences hardships like no other. Although it begins with a slow start, it takes a drastic turn, and everything but Pi's faith in God and religion changes. His faith in God remains unwavered, although he does get angry and doubts God at some points. He tells a story to obtain a false sense of reality, but reveals the truth to what actually happened at the end of the book. The story he told about the animals was an attempt to block out the memories of his mother being stabbed to death by the cook. Nobody who experiences those feelings wants to, and being on a lifeboat with a man who killed your mother, you would need a distraction. The distraction Pi had was creating the fake story about the animals and carnivorous island. Due to the extreme detail he put into creating the story with Richard Parker, it is hard to say it was all a lie, but what he told the Japanese investigators was just impossible. There is simply no such thing as a carnivorous island, and the odds of coming across another blind Frenchman in a lifeboat in the pacific are nearly impossible. Although the first story is easier for Pi to bear, the second, more gruesome one, is the true story of what happened. He had 227 days to come up with the detailed story he first told, but the investigators stated, "We want a story without animals that will explain the sinking of the Tsimtsum." (Page 168). ... Several high school curriculums neglect the importance of improving the novels to better fit current generations, which consequently reduces its impact. A Complicated Kindness is a novel by Miriam Toews that should be implemented in the English curriculum, as it not only relates to high schoolers in today's society, but is also deemed one of the best Canadian books through its personal touch and prominent themes that relate to other important novels. Novels in the curriculum have a level of significance in the literature world that evidently shows its importance and authenticity. A Complicated Kindness has been awarded with several awards such as the prestigious Governor General's Award for English Fiction in 2004 and the CBA Libris Fiction Award. It has also been regarded as the novel all Canadians should read in the 2006 Canada Reads competition. Numerous critics have noted the personal touch that comes from Toews extensive background. A critical review from Margaret Boe Birns states, "A Complicated Kindness explores both the old–fashioned world of the Mennonites and its bete noire of encroaching modernity––and although the Mennonite community is subjected to a great deal of Toews' brilliant wit, it is interesting to see the degree in which it survives her interrogation." However, the quality of the movie, a lot of the times, depends on the changes made when adapting the novel to film. The director of the movie needs to make sure that the film does not cut off significant parts, and at the same time, abstain from the unnecessary parts the writer made without changing the whole theme. Moreover, they need to add in more characters and scenes to make the film more creative and understandable.
