2. I believe that my media product both targets and involves a particular social group. In order to this, I had to
plan many different aspects of my products so they would appeal to my target audience. As well as this, I also
had to research into what my target audience would like to see featured in a music magazine and how real
magazines successfully achieve this.
Leading on from this, social groups are considered extremely important as they group certain members of
society together. This resulting in ideas and stereotypes being put forward. This is also considered important
within the media industry because it enable a brand or company to create a product that is specifically targeted
for a social group and audience. For instance, this has also helped me throughout my coursework because I
have been able to research into my products chosen target audience and create a product that appeals to that
specific social group and audience.
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
3. Who I targeted my product towards.
I chose to target my final media toward a female audience with an age range of 12-18 years old. I
chose to appeal my products towards this specific audience because I felt that there was not many
music magazines that focused on the genre of pop being sold on the market that were targeted to an
audience of female aged 12-18 years.
When researching into my target audience, I found things such as reader profiles to be extremely
helpful. Reader profiles allowed me to gain a better understanding about what my target audience
found appealing and interesting. For instance, the reader profiles allowed me to see what music
bands/artists they liked. This then helped me when creating my products because it allowed me to
alter my products content to what my audience want to see.
As well as this, I am also considered to be a member of my products target audience as I am a female
and aged 18 years old. This meant that I could add my own personal views and interest into my
product and represent what I feel my products targeted social would like to see. This therefore making
it easy for my self to tailor my product so they appear more appealing to my target audience.
4. Context and Conclusion
Another factor that played a large role in the representation of social groups throughout my coursework
was my products context. As I was created a product that as to be sold on the market with a monthly
release, I had to create a product that appeared current and up to date.
In addition to this, I feel it represents the idea that because my products target audience is younger they
are stereo typically known for keeping up to date with the latest news in the media and what trends, music
and styles are popular. As well as this, I also feel that it puts forward the idea that my audience is very
media driven and reliant upon the internet and other media technologies.
To conclude, I feel that I have represent social groups and their stereotypes through my media products to
a large extent. For instance, one might believe that my magazine puts forward many ideas about social
groups and how my magazine’s targeted audience is driven by the media and influenced by products sold
on the market.
