AMT 460 Homework Assignment 5
Transcription of Counseling Session
· Record a 20-minute role-play session with your site supervisor
and select a 10-minute section of that session to transcribe for
this assignment.
·
Your paper must include the following four sections, plus a title
page and a reference list:
· Introduction (2–3 paragraphs). Provide a general description
of your selected case, identification of the student(s), a legend
7. for the speakers (such as, S – student, M – mother, T – teacher),
and any other presenting information that sets a context for the
session. Be sure to describe the student and conceptualize the
presenting problem in language that indicates your
understanding of the student and presenting issue—you should
base your conceptualization on theory.
. Transcription and Analysis (5–7 pages). Use the template
located in Resources to present your transcription and
reflection.
. Transcription column: Use a different row for each speaker's
words.
. Practicum Competencies column ("What I did"): Identify
practicum competencies. Competencies can include application
of core counseling skills, assessment questions, and
interventions, depending on what is demonstrated in your
segment of the session. Examples:
. Reflection of feeling, minimal simple encourager, simple
empathic statement (core counseling skills).
. Assess level of alcohol use (assessment question).
. Identifying, acknowledging, reviewing symptoms (link to
intervention).
· Analysis of Practicum Thinking column ("What I was
thinking"): Analyze your reasoning for the exchange; provide a
conceptualization based on a hypothesis that prompted either
the student response or your response as the counselor.
Example: I see Audrey's difficulty with social situations in part
as being due to her lack of age-appropriate communication
skills, which perpetuates her low self-esteem.
· Evaluation of Counselor Response ("What I would do
differently now"): Evaluate the effectiveness of the competency
applied and what, if anything, you would do differently.
Example: I think pointing out Audrey's lack of social skills is
important, but I think Audrey misunderstood my comment. I
think more empathic understanding is what Audrey needs right
now. I am basing this on how Audrey responded to my comment
after I suggested her joining the Social Skills group.
8. · Theoretical Framework (1 page). In completing the
Transcription and Analysis section of this paper, you noted
segments of the counseling session where you utilized theory-
based skills. Reflect on your theoretical framework at this point
and discuss how you did or did not demonstrate that in the
session. Be sure to provide references; it is important to justify
and provide a frame of reference for the points you make.
· Self-Reflection Summary (1–2 pages). Write a conclusion
summarizing what you learned about your strengths, and discuss
areas for growth. Consider the following:
· What have you discovered about yourself as a school
counselor as a result of completing this transcription?
· What are some areas you now recognize as strengths and
challenges?
· What are the specific skills that you need to work on?
· What model do you recognize as informing your work based
on this transcription?Requirements
· Content: Prepare a comprehensive paper that includes all
sections described above in "Content Format," plus a title page
and a reference list. Appendices are optional.
· Number of pages: The body of the paper must be 9–12 pages,
double-spaced.
· Written communication: Develop accurate written
communication and thoughts that convey the overall goals of
the assignment and do not detract from the overall message.
· References: At least five references that justify and provide a
frame of reference for the points you make. You must use
proper APA style in listing your references. Refer to the APA
Style and Format module in the resources for more information.
· Formatting: Use Times New Roman, size 12 font, and APA
(6th edition) formatting, including: correct in-text citations,
proper punctuation, double-spacing throughout, proper headings
and subheadings, no skipped lines before headings and
subheadings, proper paragraph and block indentation, no
bolding, and no bullets. Refer to the APA Style and
Format module for more information.
9. · Template: Please use the provided template to complete your
transcription.

Setting up the format for an APA style paper
· Begin by setting your cursor at the first beginning space of the
first page of your paper and creating all of your margins at 1
inch. You do this by going to File>Page Set Up>Margin Tab and
set at 1 inch for all four sides, Top, Bottom, Right, and Left.
· To set spacing to true Double: First, highlight the entire
document text, or choose Select All. Then go to
Format>Paragraph>Indents and Spacing Tab and in the box that
says Line Spacing, select Double from the pull down menu.
Make sure the ‘before’ and ‘after’ boxes are set at 0 point, and
not at Auto. Use Double Spacethroughout the document and see
10. the current APA style and formatting. APA is about saving
space—no gaps or quadruple spacing, so the document is
consistent and easy to read.
· The font is Times New Roman, 12 point. Use the same size
and typeface throughout, including the paging and Running
heads.
Transcription Project Requirements
To achieve a successful project experience and outcome, you
are expected to meet the following requirements.
· Content: Prepare a comprehensive project that includes all
sections as described in the Content Format section below.
· Components:Include a title page, the body of the paper, and a
reference list.
· Number of pages: The body of the paper should be 10–12
pages.
· Written communication: Demonstrate accurate, meaningful,
and appropriate written communication.
· References: You should use a minimum of five references. The
references can include peer-reviewed journal articles or
textbooks. You must use proper APA style in listing your
references. Refer to the APA Style and Format in Capella's
Online Writing Center on iGuide for more information.
· Formatting:
· Use APA formatting for the introduction and summary
sections, including correct in-text citations, proper punctuation,
double-spacing throughout, proper headings and subheadings,
no skipped lines before headings and subheadings, proper
paragraph and block indentation, and no bullets. Refer to the
APA Style and Format for more information.
· Write your paper using Microsoft Word, not iWorks or
WordPerfect.
11. (REMOVE THIS INSTRUCTION PAGE WHEN SUBMITTING
PAPER)
Start your introduction here. The current APA format does not
use a heading title for the introduction because its position in
the paper identifies it as the introduction. Open your paper with
a foreword to introduce your case. Provide a general description
of your selected case, a legend for the speakers (such as S -
student, M - mother, T - teacher) and any other presenting
information that provides helpful context. Be sure to describe
the client and conceptualize the presenting problem in language
that indicates your understanding of the student and the
presenting issues. Base your conceptualization on theory.
The introduction should be anywhere from one to three
paragraphs. All paragraphs of your paper should be double-
spaced. The margins in this template have been set to one inch
on all sides, and the running head and automatic page
numbering has been set up for your convenience. Remember to
indent paragraphs in each section.
Do not consider this template to be the final word on writing
your paper or APA style and formatting. Be sure to explore and
consult the APA Style and Format page and the Capella Writing
Center for detailed information.
Section 2 – Transcription and Analysis
Use the transcription form included on this page for
transcription. Suggested length: (5–7 pages). The four-column
transcription form is described on the next page within the
columns.
Verbatim Transcription
Clinical Skills and Competencies
Analysis of Clinical Thinking
Evaluation of Counselor’s Response
Each row is for a different speaker's turn.
12. Column 1 – Verbatim Transcription: Transcribe a 10-minute
segment of your Unit 6 role-play verbatim—your words and the
client's words. You may also comment on silences, pauses, or
relevant observations of body language. Use Student to identify
the client's words and behaviors, and use Counselor to identify
the counselor's words and behaviors. Do not use any names in
the verbatim transcription.
Column 2 – Clinical Skills and Competencies("What I did"):
Identify clinical skills and competencies you utilized during the
session. These will come from the range of skills described and
discussed in the textbooks for this course.
Column 3 –
Analysis of Clinical Thinking column ("What I was thinking"):
Analyze your reasoning for the exchange; provide a
conceptualization based on a hypothesis that prompted either
the client response or your response as the counselor.
Column 4 – Evaluation of Counselor's Response ("What I would
do differently now"): Evaluate the effectiveness of the skill,
competency, or statement utilized by you, the counselor. Note if
you would change the content, delivery, or timing of your
responses. Comment on what you could have said or done
differently or on the value of what you did say or do. You may
also provide analysis of your emotional responses or thoughts
during the session.
Example: Counselor: I can see that you are upset
Acknowledged nonverbal behavior and reflected feeling
Noticing the student's affect is important to acknowledge my
interest and concern.
13. Appropriate skill. Could have said, “It looks as though
something is on your mind.” This would have given an
opportunity for the student to share.
Example: Student: Heck yeah!

To set up the reference section, center the title, References, 1
inch from top of paper. Then, to set up hanging indents for the
reference section, put your cursor on the first line where the
first reference will begin and highlight the references. Select
Format, then Paragraph, then select the menu that says Indents
and Spacing, select the menu box that says Special and choose
Hanging. Then set the box that says by at 0.5 inch. Keep the
line spacing set at double, which gives double spacing both
between each individual reference and within each reference.
