Assessing risk factors and defining project costs are important
components of project planning. This assignment allows you to
work through different risk and cost assessment activities using
Microsoft Excel.
1. Qualitative Risk Assessment. Imagine that you are a member
of a project team that has been charged to develop a new
product for the residential building industry. Using a qualitative
risk analysis matrix, develop a risk assessment for a project
based on the information provided in the Excel template. Based
on this information, how would you rate the consequences of
each of the identified risk factors? Why? Construct a risk matrix
and classify each of the risk factors in the matrix.
2. Risk Mitigation Strategies. Develop a preliminary risk
5. mitigation strategy for each of the risk factors identified in the
prior question. If you were to prioritize your efforts, which risk
factors would you address first? Why?
3. Quantitative Risk Assessment. Review the probability and
consequence data provided in the Excel template. Calculate the
overall risk factor for this project. Would you assess this level
of risk as low, moderate, or high? Why?
4. Cost of Labor. Calculate the fully loaded cost of labor for
your project team using the data provided in the Excel template.
5. Planned and Cumulative Costs. Calculate the planned and
cumulative costs for the time-phased budget information
provided in the Excel template.
6. Complexity Cost Weighting. As a Project Manager are asked
to compute the expected costs of a software project at your
organization. Calculate the total estimated number of function
points and total expected cost for the project data provided in
the Excel template.

Project Scope is one of the most important aspects of project
planning and control. In order to be successful with managing
scope, Project Managers will create a Work Breakdown
Structure to detail out deliverables and work packages. Further
they will create a responsibility matrix to relate tasks to
resources.
7. Using either Microsoft Word (Hierarchy SmartArt Graphic is
best used for the WBS) or Excel to create the following:
1. Work Breakdown Structure. Create a three level WBS graphic
(similar to Figure 5.3 on page 156 in your text) using the
following data (include the numbers and description within each
box):
1.0 Project: Provide a Banquet
1.1 Plan and Supervise
1.1.1 Create Plan
1.1.2 Make Budget
1.1.3 Prepare Disbursements/Reconciliation
1.1.4 Coordinate Activities
1.2 Dinner
1.2.1 Make Menu
1.2.2 Create Shopping List
1.2.3 Shop
1.2.4 Cook
1.2.5 Serve Dinner
1.3 Room and Equipment
1.3.1 Identify Site/Room
1.3.2 Setup Tables/Chairs
1.3.3 Layout Settings/Utensils
1.3.4 Decorate
1.3.5 Prepare Equipment, Pots, etc.
1.4 Guests
1.4.1 Make Guest List
1.4.2 Receive RSVPs
1.4.3 Create Name Tags
1.4.4 Make Guest List

1.6 Speakers
1.6.1 Invite
1.6.2 Transport
1.6.3 Coordinate Topics
1.6.4 Backup for No-shows
1.6.5 Send Thank You Notes
2. Project Task Description Form. Create a task description
form similar to the below example for work packages 1.2.1,
1.2.2, and 1.2.3. Make assumptions and be creative to complete
each of the fields.
3. Responsibility Matrix. Create a simple Responsibility
Assignment Matrix (RAM) for this project (using the five work
packages for Speakers (1.6.1-1.6.5), identifying at least 4
fictitious project team members. You should consider team
members' abilities, qualifications, and strengths and weaknesses
and create a matrix similar to what is provided on page 162 of
your Project Management Text.
Continue with the project that you identified during Unit 2’s
discussion, for which you were a member of a team that was
involved in a project.
•Identify your project and provide a brief scope statement.
•What type of project risks did your project team face? Include
at least one risk (and explanation) from each: ◦Financial Risk
9. ◦Technical Risk
◦Commercial Risk
◦Execution Risk
◦Contractual or Legal Risk
•What type of risk mitigation strategies did your project team
use and was the strategy successful? In hindsight, would
another approach have been better?
•What types of costs were present in your project? Include
examples of fixed costs, variable costs, nonrecurring, and
recurring costs.
•Lastly, what approach was used to estimate and budget the
project (Top-Down, Bottom-Up, or Activity-Based)? Were any
contingencies used? Explain.
