Seven trailer analysis
1. The trailer of Se7en beings to build up suspense from the beginning. The trailer opens up with Brad Pitt (David mills) looking a little
beaten up having a conversation with Morgan freeman (Somerset) “You like what you do for a living, these things you see ?“, “We're
blind sometimes" this conversation shows that the job there job included them seeing things that are out of the ordinary and possible
scaring because by Morgan Freeman saying “We're blind sometimes" this shows that sometimes you have to ignore (turn a blind eye)
as a detective.
The trailer then continues to showing flashing images which include detective David mills in a dark red room with black and white
pictures hanging above his head, wind blowing up a very light curtain set, some sort of drug (evidence) and a man dressed in white
overalls flashing light within a dark room. This flashed images have connotations of mystery and high level crimes which allows the
audience to understand the concept of the film. A metronome is shown and the sound of it continues within the trailer, This may
show the time the detectives have in order to catch the killer because Somerset retires in six days and the criminally has
seven deadly sin murders to carry out within the time period.
Low-key lighting is used in scenes when the detectives are at work. This emphasises the mystery and gloominess of their jobs. This
contrasts with the high-key lighting used in detective David mills' house and this may show that the seriousness and darkness of
their jobs are left on the doorstep and within their household is where their happiness is maintained.
Somerset: “You will be spending every waking hour together from now till the time I leave I'll show you who your friends and
enemies are”, detective David Mills: “Like five years.” this dialogue shows that Somerset is very well experienced in his job and the
5/6 days detective David mills will be spending with him is like 5 years because he is bound to learn a lot within those few days.
The trailer then shows a forensic spraying out evidence from a victim and the found evidence reads “Help me" which was written,
The following dialogue is detective Somerset saying “No finger prints and no witnesses of any kind about the only thing we know
about that guy right now is that he is totally insane" the imagine shown whilst detective Somerset is talking a cabinet in a dark room
full of tools which the murder is most possible using to carry out his murders. This also tells the audience that although there is
evidence found these victims are helpless because its so difficult to find their killer because there is no source which will enable
anyone to trace him as he leaves no tracks.
TRAILER ANALYSIS //
SE7EN (PRE 1990S)
2. Within a very professional looking detective building we see the character of Somerset telling his detective team what he has put
together from the evidence he has found “Gluttony, greed, sloth , wrath pride lust and envy 7. you can expect 5 more of these" this
shows that Somerset is not head of the investigation but is the most wisest, as Somerset is talking we see images of e.g. a blown up
person (greed) in the middle of a dark room, This shows the audience the goriness of the murders acts he the extent the murders
going through to display death with the 7 deadly sins.
The trailer then has a turning point and this is the scene where Tracy Miller (Gwyneth Paltrow) David's wife is crying saying "I hate
this city" this contrasts with the pervious scene showed because before when they were all shown at home she was shown happy and
now she’s sad which shows the solemnity of the case has hit home and become part of these detectives whole lives.
The scene then moves on to show a scene where journalist and the news are following the detectives within a quit prestigious
building, this building and the press getting involved shows the seriousness the build up of attention the case and the detectives
have got within a short period of time. It then moves on to show us a man saying “This will be the very definition of swift justice"
This allows us to know that the victims of these killings are people that have done bad within the deadly sins that were used to
murder them.
Drawing to the end of the trailer David Miller (Brad Pitt) is seen e.g. jumping off buildings, jumping on cars on a rainy day and also
holding a gun, he then says “Lets finish it" this shows that he has strongly taken the matter into his own hands and made it his
mission to catch the man killing people.
We also see flashes the words of the deadly sins flashing passed fast at the end twice, this may show how fast these murders are
going to be committed as the words are flashing before our eyes.
