3. SUBJECT OF A SENTENCE.
• The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing or idea that is
doing or being something.
• To find the subject, you need to ask “who” or “what” before the
verb.
The crowd cheered for the football team.
- Who cheered for the football team?
= The crowd
The crowd is the subject of this sentence because it comes before the
verb and answers the question “who”.

4. VERB OF A SENTENCE.
• A verb is a main part of a sentence / speech that is used to describe
or indicate an action.
• Sentences are not complete without a verb.
The crowd cheered for the football team.
- What is the action?
= cheered (cheering)
Cheered (Cheer/Cheering) is the verb of this sentence because it
indicates the action done by the crowd for the football team.

5. OBJECT OF A SENTENCE.
• The object of a sentence is the person or thing that receives the
action of the verb.
• To find the object , you need to ask “who” or “what” after the verb.
The crowd cheered for the football team.
- Who did the crowd cheer for?
= The football team
The football team is the object of this sentence because it comes after
the verb and answers the question “who”.

6. EXAMPLE
They played the drums.
• “They” is the subject: the one ‘who’ is performing the action and the one
the sentence is about.
• “played” is the verb: it is the action being performed by the subject.
• “drums” is the object: it is ‘what’ is being played and it is ‘what’ the
subject is doing something to.

7. EXAMPLE
The monkey climbed the tree.
• “Monkey” is the subject: the one ‘who’ is performing the action and the
one the sentence is about.
• “climbed” is the verb: it is the action being performed by the subject.
• “tree” is the object: it is ‘what’ is being climbed and it is ‘what’ the
subject is doing something to.
