What are Adverbs ?
Ans. An adverb is a word that modifies a verb,
adjective, another adverb, whole sentence.
Adverbs expresses manner, place, time,
frequency, degree, relation etc. Answering
questions such as how?, how much?, when?,
where?, how often?, why etc.

5. 1. Adverb of Manner
An adverb that tell us how someone does
something or how something happens is called
Adverb of Place. It answers question How ?
He drank quickly. [after the verb]
He drank the water quickly. [after the object]
He drank quickly the water. [between the verb
and object]
Most adverbs of manner end in ly. Except of
well, hard, late, fast etc.

1. He quickly agreed to go to the store for milk.
2. The doctor gently woke the sleeping patient.
3. He regularly does meditation.
4. I opened the door hurriedly.
5. Robin is fully prepared for the test.
6. Alisha always behaves gently with her elders.

7. 2. Adverb of Place
An adverb which tells us where action or
movement is taking place or where work is
being done is called Adverbs of Place. It answers
question Where ?.

• Alisha went to Sweden yesterday.
• She will stay there for 5 days.
• I booked a hotel room for her sitting here in
my room.
• She will stay at Hotel Travis.
• It is situated in Stockholm.
• I did not go there with her because I must
attend a meeting here.

9. 3. Adverb of Time
An adverb that tells us when and for how long
things or action happens are defined as adverbs
of time. It answer the question When ?.

Riya came here yesterday.
I slept late the previous night.
Now I am going to her home.
I wanted to go tomorrow but then I thought it
would be better not to go.
Then I called her but her phone was switched
off.
I will not play cricket today.

11. 4. Adverb of Degree
An adverb that tells you the the degree or
intensity of an adjective, an action, or another
adverb is called Adverb of Degree. It answers
the question How Much ?

They were almost finished.
This cake is absolutely wonderful.
The temperature was barely above freezing.
Our driveway is completely frozen.
We felt incredibly lucky after winning tickets to
the World Series.
My friend is terribly grumpy today.

13. 5. Adverb of Frequency
An adverb that tells us how often or how many
times an action takes place or work is being done
is called Adverb of Frequency.

I always do morning walk.
They usually arrive late.
My father often forgets his birthday.
He sometimes wakes up early.
I rarely drink tea in the morning.
Jenny never drinks coffee in the evening.

15. 6. Relative Adverb
Adverbs used to introduce us to adjective clause
are called Relative Adverb. Where, When, Why
are some of the Relative Adverbs.

This is the garden where they took their photos.
The seat where we sat last Saturday is still free.
I can remember a time when I could eat four
hamburgers.
We do not know the reason why he left..
We do not know why he was crying.

17. 7. Interrogative Adverb
An adverb that is used to ask questions about the
manner, time, place, frequency and reason of an
action, is called an interrogative adverb.

When are you going to grow up ?
How many sweets have you eaten ?
Whose book was that ?
Which book are you reading?
What are you eating ?
