Mount Saint Helens is a volcano located in southwestern Washington. It is 8,363 feet tall.
Geologists say that Mount St. (Saint) Helens is a stratovolcano, also known as a composite volcano.
Stratovolcano is a volcano that is built upward because of layers of hardened volcanic ash, lava, and
other volcanic debris. These kinds of volcanoes are distinguished by their steep sides. They often
erupt extremely explosively, putting people and properties nearby at risk.
The present–day name, Mount Saint Helens, was received in 1792 by a man named George
Vancouver. He was captain of the British Royal Navy, at the time. The name was given in honor of

II. ERUPTIONS
Many recorded and known eruptions of Mt St Helens dates all the way back to the 19th century.
Early settlers and some Indians staying in the local area observed infrequent eruptions. Mount Saint
Helens was more active than expected throughout a 26 year interval from 1831– 1857. Scientists
believe that it may have erupted a little over a century before that, in 1800. After that possible
eruption there was no activity until 1831. After the eruption in 1857, Mt Saint Helens only gave off
little steam outbreaks; after that, nothing more had occurred. The little steam outbreaks had occurred
in 1898, 1903, and 1921. Due to the fact that no activity had happened for 123 years, the
predominance of the residents in the 20th century described Mt St Helens not as a hazardous threat,
but as a beautiful, calm mountain.
The most previous, recorded eruption was happened on May 18, 1980. At 12:36 pm, Mount Saint
Helens began erupting steam and ash about 6,000 ft. (feet) into the air, above the volcano. The
actual explosion, releasing lava and ash, produced a 250 ft. (foot) wide crater. About a month
afterwards, a second moderately bigger crater formed. The two large craters combined together to
create one colossal crater in the volcano.
III. EFFECTS OF THE EXPLOSION
The lethal eruption killed 57 people, including geologist David Johnson, due to ash fall, thermal

Many people underestimate the power of volcanoes and the amount of damage they can do to a
country, state, city, or town. A volcano is a mountain that extends down to a caldera which is a pool
like are of magma in between the mantle and the crust in the Earth. It in a sense is a massive hole in
the middle of the crust and mantle of the Earth where magma can erupt from and eventually make
its way to the Earth's surface. Volcanoes are estimated to kill almost 1,000 people per year and
caused $99,000,000 worth of economic damages from 1980 to 2008. When an active volcano erupts
its "danger zone" is about a 20 mile radius around the volcano itself, which ends up killing people,
destroying houses, land, etc.
Known worldwide is the volcano of Tambora. On April 5th, 1815, many people didn't think it would
be their last day of their life. This volcano has one of the most tragic stories with the most deaths
recorded by one single volcano in history. The volcano of Tambora killed 80,000 people directly and
indirectly (Farrell,J). Most of the people that died were from Sumbawa Island and a lot of people

vehicles? The point I'm trying to convey is, you could perform to perfection every trained move,
study every sophisticated detail, do everything by the book, and still have an element out of your

1. The major types of volcanoes are shield volcanoes, scoria cones (cinder cones), and
stratovolcanoes (composite). Each of these volcano types is influenced by the volume, the amount
of magma, viscosity, a measure magma's fluid friction, and volatiles or dissolved gases, of the
magma that creates them. Shield volcanoes form from the solidification of lava flows of basalt
(Abbott 2014). These large volume, low viscosity, low volatiles magma flows travel great distances.
As thousands of layers of lava flows cool on top of one another other, volcanoes are formed over a
long period of time. The width of these volcanoes is greater than their height, for example Mauna
Loa in Hawaii. Scoria or cylinder cones are low height conical hills formed by basaltic and andesitic
pyroclastic debris collected near a volcanic vent. Scoria cone magma is of small volume with
medium viscosity and medium volatiles. At the top of these cones are summit craters usually less
than two kilometers in diameter which may hold magma lakes during an eruption (Abbott 2014).
Additionally, lava may also drain from the base of scoria cones. Stratovolcanoes or composite
volcanoes are steep sided and symmetrical, examples include Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Rainer,

In Aztec legends, worlds were formed as powerful deities fought among themselves. These gods
often took form through associations with common items such as numbers, colors, directions and
even calendrical events. Aztec spiritual life ranged from the crafting of small pottery statues in
representation of the gods to large scale events like attending elaborate public ceremonies involving
human sacrifice.
At the end of each fifty–two year calendrical cycle, the Aztecs would hold a ritual in which priests
would begin a fire at the top of a "volcano that overlooked the surrounding shimmering lakes"
