Industrialization in Ireland
When Ireland began to industrialize in the 1960s and 1970s, why did it mostly occur in rural Ireland
and what were the consequences for the rural residence?
Industrialisation in the 1960s and 1970s.
When most people in the world think of Ireland, they imagine green fields with farm animals, old
cottages, stone walls, rocky roads, people riding around on horse–back and men working in the
bogs. However Ireland actually has one of the quickest fastest economies in the world. Rural
Industrialisation played a huge role in this growth. Industrialisation is a very important part of Irish
history. It was a new beginning for the Irish people living in rural areas and it created a change in
gender composition within the labour force. Women were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This also affected family relationships as the women no longer experienced the world solely with
their families. Women would usually be given land from their fathers to build a family home
however with them now receiving their own wage from the factories some would build their houses
elsewhere with their spouses to maintain their independence from their fathers. Their independence
also caused family diversity on religious views as women weren't following the traditional Irish way
of life. As they were not under supervision, they could travel to other towns to buy condoms, going
against their religious faith. Diversity developed between the entrepreneurial middle class and the
working class in the rural areas as there was differences in wages, education and jobs. This meant
that the interclass was blurred creating a class–less society.
Hiring of women had some consequences for trade unions. Since the 1970s we have seen the
increasing of trade unions militancy in the state sector leading to them declining in the private
sector. This is because of their lack of attention to the needs and rights of the women working in
these factories. Three ways the trade union could have provided for these women working in the
factories are equal pay, crèches and maternity

Myth Story : The Disappearance Of Lorelei
Myth Story: The Disappearance of Lorelei
There once lived a beautiful nymph named Lorelei on the Rhine River. The only thing more
beautiful than her physical beauty was her voice. When she sang, it is said that no one can resist, and
anyone hearing her irresistible song would not be able to avoid death. One day, a proud, young
warrior, Ronald, and his father were boating down the Rhine River and Ronald soon heard Lorelei's
alluring song. When he heard Lorelei's voice, he felt as if there were invisible arms pulling him to
her. The sun was beginning to set, slowly enveloping the men in darkness; however, Ronald
continued to row towards to the rocks.
Ronald's father who figured out what was happening warned Ronald that he was being lured by
Lorelei. When he heard his father say the name, he suddenly saw the beautiful nymph sitting on the
cliff combing her hair. Ronald heard the nymph sing his name, and he dove into the water. Despite
Lorelei's song, the old man was able to turn the boat around.
When the old man made his way back home, he convinced a court of soldiers to bring the
enchantress to him, dead or alive. The soldiers arrived at the mountains and once again, Lorelei was
combing her hair. The men told Lorelei that they had come to destroy her, but Lorelei told them "the
Rhine is coming for me." The water rose around the nymph, carried her away, and washed Ronald's
body ashore. Sailors still hear her voice, soft and beautiful, trying to lure them to death (Friedman

Film Analysis :'samson ( Hwv 57 )
Samson (HWV 57) is a three–act oratorio by George Frideric Handel. It was the first oratorio he
wrote after the Messiah. The oratorio deals with the biblical figure Samson and it is also based on
"Samson Agonistes" by John Milton. The aria happens at the end of the Oratorio to serve as a happy
ending with its joyous flare. The instrumentation has a trumpet doubling the voice throughout the
piece as it is eluded in the text of Angel–trumpets. Le Nozze di Figaro is one of Mozart's most
popular operas, with the libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. Act 2 begins in the bedroom of
Countess Rosina Almaviva, where she laments her husband's perceived infidelity with Susana, her
maid, in the aria "Porgi Amour".

This example of lieder is a great example of Romantic poetry dealing with nature and the human
condition with emotion. The poetry is by poet Ludwig Heinrich Christoph Hölty.
Clara Schumann paved the way for women composers and was a finer musician than many of her
contemporaries. Clara Schumann was renowned in her time, for her outstanding piano skills and her
performances as a child prodigy. She composed "Lorelei" in 1843; it is towards the end of her lieder
output from the years 1831 to 1853. The text is by German Poet Heinrich Heine, a favorite author
among Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. "Die Lorelei" is one of his most popular poems and
was set to music by other composers, but Clara's musical setting has been lovingly referred to as the
'Female equivalent to "Der Erlkönig."
Hugo Wolf was another nineteenth–century composer who specialized in lieder. He wrote hundreds
of lieder and composed other works, including two operas. His style is linked to the Second
Viennese School of Arnold Schoenberg, Alan Berg, and Anton Webern. Wolf's lieder continually
have grand moments of expressiveness. His lieder and compositions have complex harmonic
motions; Verschwiegene Liebe especially is harmonically thick all while maintaining its sweetness.
Richard Strauss was a leading German composer that spanned the late nineteenth century into the
twentieth century. He is best known for his numerous operas, like Salome and Der

Sirens have been known as hazardous creatures that lure sailors into a death caused by a shipwreck,
according to the website, Greek Mythology. She is Lorelei the Siren, and her life's story is

My Dearest Lorelei Research Paper
My dearest Lorelei,
I remember the day you were born, like it happened only yesterday. Looking into your beautiful blue
eyes, holding your tiny hand in mine for the first time. I see you now as you grow into a young lady,
right before my eyes. I cannot tell you just how very proud I am of you. Once upon a time, I was
like you. I know you are shaking your head thinking, "you don't understand meeee." Oh but I do.
You see I wasn't always the prehistoric Mom–Asaurus Rex. Believe it or not, I had the same
problems you have, and I too, thought my mother was way out of touch, and she had to be the
dumbest person on the planet. My mom used to tell me useless junk like, "don't wish so hard to
grow up.. these truly are the best years of your life and you will want them back." This will shock
you, but guess what she was right all along. Life does go by quicker than we realize sometimes.
Cherish every moment, enjoy the little things. You my dear have taught me how to do that, over
these eight years.
I love to watch you dance, singing your heart out, playing softball, drawing me some amazing
pictures, playing with your sister, and most of all I just enjoy watching you enjoying life. You have

you are going to fall down sometimes, and that's okay. It's all about being able to learn and grow as
a person from the mistakes, and always getting back up when you fall down. No matter how old you
may get, you will always be my little girls. I love you to the moon in back. When you ever doubt ask

David Foster Wallace E Unibus Pluram Summary
Quotidian Magic In his essay "E Unibus Pluram" David Foster Wallace critiques the fast–cutting
tropes of contemporary cinema and television as meretriciously catering to our desire to transcend
our average daily lives. These hysterical collages are, in his words, "unsubtle in their whispers that,
somewhere, life is quicker, denser, more interesting... more lively." We leave these films dazzled,
punching the air, ready to do combat with a gang of bad guys or lose a pursuer in a car chase, but
enjoy none of the edifying potential that Leo Tolstoy and other early theorizers of cinema's potential
saw in the fledgling art form. Contemporary independent cinema often works in stubborn self–
conscious contrast to the transcendence aesthetic, but too

Indigenous Peoples Of Canada Bear A Disproportionate...
Purpose:
Indigenous peoples in Canada bear a disproportionate hepatitis C disease burden. This project used a
decolonizing and community–driven approach to give voice to First Peoples with lived hepatitis C
experience in developing a research agenda to address hepatitis C amongst First Nations, Inuit and
Métis peoples. The purpose of this project is to develop and inform a larger exploratory study
concerning the unique lived experience of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples living with
hepatitis C. The study aimed to elucidate and explore culturally resonant approaches for Indigenous
peoples across Canada in a wholistic care cascade for this population.
The specific objectives of this study were as follows: (1) a rapid review of the hepatitis C literature
employing an Indigenous lens; (2) a series of sharing circles of Indigenous peoples with lived
hepatitis C experiences (3) analysis of sharing circle discourse by the research team and Community
Research Associates; (4) a series of validation exercises with key informants to increase robustness
and enrich findings; (5) team–building and multi–directional capacity strengthening; and (6)
development a larger community–based operating grant application for future research funding

Women : The Role Of Women In The 1920s
The 19th Amendment, passed in 1920, marked an immense leap forward with regard to the role of
women in American society. The embrace of personal freedom by the "New Woman" is reflected in
the 1925 novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, by Anita Loos, and the 1953 American musical comedy
film adaptation by Howard Hawks. In the twenty–eight years that separated these works, however, a
different vision of society – and in particular, of women – arose, and this is depicted through the
presentation of female sexuality, gender dominance, and intellect, showing that the women of the
1950's were far more empowered than their 1920's sisters. A direct outcome of the economic and
social evolution of the 1920s was that the "New Woman" pursued her freedom by aiming to be more
than a household drudge: she saw herself as deserving to be pampered and spoilt by an adoring man.
Loos's Lorelei is willing to serve as arm candy for rich men who desire for beauty and good time. As
a product of capitalism, she equates culture with tangible assets. Both protagonists pursue this goal
without using their sexuality as a weapon to exploit the men they encounter for material gain. In
fact, the short hair, boyish look, flattened chest and knee length skirts were just a few ways to
describe the young liberal women of the 20s, nicknamed 'flappers'. Loos instead presents them as
stereotypical 'damsels in distress,' waiting for a prince on a white horse to rescue them. This rescue
comes in the form of being

Sylvia Plath Suffering
Sylvia Plath, a very talented writer and poet, focuses on two very prominent themes in her works:
death, specifically suicide, and suffering. In her only novel, The Bell Jar, the protagonist, Esther
Greenwood, takes the reader on a journey that explores the life and struggles of a young female poet
and a tragic heroine. Esther's experiences reflect those of Sylvia Plath's. Plath describes her life as
she saw it, confessing her thoughts and feelings to her audience. In her poems, "Perseus", "Lorelei",
and "Lady Lazarus", Plath further explores the themes of death and suffering, and uses the portrayal
of the tragic heroes/heroines in "Perseus" as symbolism. Esther's character takes on the role of a
tragic heroine. She attempts to excel in her writing but achieves no such success, an undertaking
similar to that of Sylvia Plath. A plethora of events, such as the Rosenbergs being sentenced to death
and Hilda's comment about the situation, "'I'm so glad they're going to die,'" Esther not being
accepted to the writing course program, and Esther almost being raped, causes her to contemplate
and almost succeed in committing suicide (Plath 100). Her committing suicide was an ... Show more

a lot of suffering, where a mother suffers as a result of her child's suffering and struggle. In the same
way, Esther causes her mother to suffer when she "dumped the roses [her mother gave her] in the

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Comparative Essay
The musical film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which is best known for the infamous show tune
Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend, was filmed in 1953 and stars Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei Lee and
Jane Russell as Dorothy Shaw . Lorelei and Dorothy are a couple of attractive ladies and best
friends, who perform in a cabaret show. Lorelei is a diamond hungry, gold digger who uses her
looks and sexuality to get what she wants from a man and she has set her sights on the wealthy but
naïve Gus Esmond played by Tommy Noonan. Her best gal pal Dorothy is a sassy, clever beauty

Both films are musicals about cabaret dancers except Gentlemen Prefer Blondes stars two leading
ladies whereas Cabaret only has one leading lady. Another similarity between the two films is the
gold digger aspect, Lorelei being the gold digger in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes are only interested in
materialistic things which is very similar to Sally's interest in a wealthy man except Sally is also
interested in what a wealthy man can do for her acting career. A few of the differences in the two
films were that they are filmed during different era's and so being that Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
was filmed in the early fifties, it is much more conservative and even though Cabaret is set in the
thirties the film was actually filmed in the early seventies when it was popular to really push the
envelope and so this films plot is much more risqué. Another difference with these two films is that
in Cabaret the plot is more dramatic really focusing on the rise of Nazism and the topic of sexual
preference by having the three main characters becoming involved in a love triangle. Gentlemen
Prefer Blondes was more of a carefree comedy with not a lot of the plot. Overall I would have to say
that the plot for Cabaret had more substance, therefor keeping me more interested than Gentlemen
Prefer Blondes

Black Oxen Analysis
1
In Gertrude Atherton's Black Oxen, a man named Clavering falls in love with a woman who is not
what she appears to be. When Clavering first sees Madame Zattiany, he views her as an object. He
refers to her as "it" rather than "she" when he describes her at the beginning of the book. He states
that, "in spite of its smooth white skin and rounded contours above an undamaged throat, it was,
subtly, not a young face" (Atherton, page 45). Atherton is using Clavering as a vehicle to argue that
men tend to see women as objects. It is easier to defend injustice if one can dehumanize the
opposing side. It seems as if he is taking stock of her features, as if she were a cow being sold at a
market, Clavering is observing her in the hopes of later devouring her. Clavering sees her and knows
she is different because she draws attention to herself, she doesn't just sit in silence. She simply isn't
behaving as Clavering believes a woman should. There is an uncertainty that comes when Clavering
sees Mary disregarding the manners of the time. Then he observes her in great detail. His inspection
reveals just how superficial Clavering is. He examines her so thoroughly, as if she was a prized mare
at auction: " her forehead was perhaps too high, but it was full, and thick hair was brushed back
from a sharp point. Her eyebrows, thank Heaven, were many shades darker than her hair" (Atherton,
pages 44–45). It is through these observations that Atherton emphasizes men's obsession with the

Boyhood Review
Boyhood Review
Déjà vu is a strong sensation of feeling as if you have already lived certain events but are
experiencing them again. Déjà vu can be strange and confusing, but it also can be joyful like the
2014 drama film Boyhood. Boyhood was nominated for a total of 6 Oscars and was directed by
Richard Linklater. Boyhood stars Ellar Coltrane as Mason, a boy who lives with his mom (Patricia
Arquette) and his older sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater). The story is told through Mason's eyes
as he grows up and faces the similar challenges that we all had to face growing up. Whether it be the
struggle of moving to a new home, coping with divorce, or dealing with his annoying sister,
Boyhood has something that everyone can relate to. The most amazing thing about Boyhood is its
scale. Filmed over the course of 12 years, you get to literally see the cast grow before your eyes.

One of which is how much the film decides to focus on family. The filmmakers have you spend so
much time growing up with Mason's family that they forgot to include a big part of everyone's life,
their friends. Although Mason's friends are present, you never really get to know them. They don't
have an impact on the story, they are introduced and then suddenly gone. Some of my greatest
memories from childhood were my neighborhood friends and it is a shame that the film didn't fully
explore this aspect. All in all Boyhood is a classic tale about the struggles and beauty of growing up.
A boy's childhood has so many aspects and stories that it is hard to capture it all but Boyhood did
the best that it could and it certainly succeeded in telling Mason's story. Mason's story will definitely
go down in film history and will inspire filmmakers everywhere to find a unique way to tell a story

Final Reflection Paper
Final Reflection Since my youth, I've had little trouble suspending my disbelief in media, especially
film and TV. As such, issues such as racial or sexual representation meant little to me, as I would
end up projecting myself onto whatever character I most related to, skin, gender, or sexuality be
damned. Growing up like this, I identified with many characters of diverse personalities (not
necessarily skin tones), and found myself rather complacent with the state of the medium as a result.
Looking back in history, however, I realized that film didn't always feature this diversity of mind,
and what it does feature today is still significantly lacking. While I believe that Hollywood has made
a significant amount of progress over that years, it still features significant issues that need attention,
especially in regards to character portrayal. As a child, I was largely unaware of the blatant racism
and sexism that permeated early film history due to a combination of lacking a critical eye and
rarely seeing old film. Popular films such as D.W. Griffith's The Birth of A Nation(1915) and
Broken Blossoms(1919) center their plots on archaic depictions of race, with the former glorifying
white supremacy and the KKK and the latter using the term "Asian" as a disability to be overcome
rather than an intrinsic part of one's character. Watching the "otherness" of these characters opened
my eyes to many of the larger issues that would be discussed in the class, as they were very extreme

John Steinbeck's 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'
I have recently read four paragraphs of your novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and I must say it is a
very comical narrative indeed. One aspect I noticed while reading, is the plot setting. You structured
it in a way that it informed the reader about the protagonist's background, while providing definite
interpretive clues about the character's thought process. For instance, the protagonist, Lorelei Lee,
recalls a time when an observant friend commented that if she were to write down her thoughts, it
would produce a book. This not only defines her character, but also provides how others think of
her. Moreover, most men she meets assume that since she is blonde and talkative, they can take
advantage of her. However, that is the irony of Anita ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The point–of–view (POV) is one of the foundations that create the meaning of the story. By writing
it in first person, the author is able to convey the irony or humor of the story through the character.
For example, Lorelei acknowledges the humor at the possibility of pursuing an authoress career.
Further mentioning that prior to this idea, her family wanted her to pursue a musical career.
However, Lorelei despised the long hours of practicing the mandolin that came along with pursing
such a career. Recalling. that she became temperamental, threw the mandolin away, and ended up
quitting. This event, specifically the throwing of the mandolin, signifies how severe her
temperaments can become from outright frustration. Yet, a positive solution rose up from this
negative event, she found that writing keeps her tranquil and collected. Whereas, practicing her
instrument releases fidgety frustration, due to the long hours of repetitive practice. Humorously, she
says that she should smile, since she got carried away writing about this incident; finishing the diary
entry in a rather sour mood. Concluding, that writing in first–person utilizes the skills needed to
grasp the true meaning of Anita Loos' character: a dramatic and cunning

The Reality Of Television Programs
Today's television programs are very different from the television programs that were shown over
fifty years ago. The shows in the past portrayed a modest conservative family. These families consist
of a hardworking man and a stay at home woman, married raising their own biological children. As
the years went by, television has started to portray a more liberal definition of what a family means
in today's world. Because of today's TV shows, there are different ideas about what a family should
look like.
Families on TV are not always a married couple containing one man and one woman raising their
own children. We now have many shows that support gay rights when it comes to marriage and
being parents. The hit comedy "Modern Family" has the funny loveable characters of Mitchell and
Cameron. They adopted a baby girl from Vietnam. The series also shows the wedding between the
two men, as well as the comical outcomes when they try to raise their daughter the best way
possible. As Greg Graffin wrote in his article "Anarchy in the Tenth Grade" "It is also a shining
example of how easy it is to follow the party line and champion a bandwagon mentality–which only
motivates me to keep fighting for originality." (3) This is seen on the show "The Fosters", a girl
named Callie is placed in a foster home with a lesbian couple and their other adopted children. On
this show the couple showed more love and support than the previous foster homes she was placed

Plant Arabidopsis Thaliana Summary
Summary
Dr. Alice Cheung studies the molecular mechanisms behind mating in the plant Arabidopsis
thaliana. The male pollen tube is lured toward the female ovule, which leads to bursting of the
pollen tube and the release of cytoplasmic sperm, permitting fertilization. The Cheung Lab
identified many vital proteins involved in this process. Mainly, these proteins include, FERONIA
(FER), LORELEI (LRE), and ANXUR (ANX). The surface receptor kinase FER was found to be an
upstream regulator of plant RHO GTPases (RAC/ROPs) and multiple transmembrane spanning
NADPH oxidases. The localization of FER to the membrane is highly dependent on the GPI–
anchored protein LORELEI–like–GPI–anchored protein 1 (LLG1). Proper interaction between FER

plays a critical role in how plants are studied. By inserting genes of interest such as FER with a GFP
tag, fluorescence microscopy becomes a solution in observing the localization of FER during
different stages in the plants life as well as different conditions of its environment. In addition to
tagging proteins, the Cheung lab heavily relies on fluorescence microscopy to visualize many
different structures and molecules in different types of cells throughout the plant. With the
combination of fluorescence, confocal, and electron microscopy, the Cheung Lab can utilize
different approaches in overcoming the scientific challenges they face. Dr. Cheung clearly
demonstrated the interactions with FER to permit localization with LLG1 as well as membrane
embedding with LRE. The next step she would like to take in her research is to identify which
ligands interact with FER at the membrane and what effect do they have on FER localization, as
well the signaling effects downstream. Also, she will explore how these processes change in
different cell types throughout the

Embracing The Dumb Blonde Analysis
In its largest sense, Session on Gender demonstrated opinions on gender, sexuality, and women's
issues. It also showed the intercultural relations that cross–national boundaries, cultural relations
within a particular society, and the interactions between female activities such as art and literature.
The first speaker, Krista Aldritch presented the topic "Embracing the 'Dumb Blonde': Navigating
Identity in Anita Loos' Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." She argued that "dumb blonde" can actually be
very intellectual and use her look to get what she wants. Krista supported her argument by using
Lorelei Lee, the main character of Anita Loos' "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Lorelei Lee's character
reveals what it means to be a woman in 1920s. Krista explained that Loralei Lee uses her "dumb
blond" persona to succeed and to secure her future by being that "desirable image" for men.
The second speaker, Jacky Bui, confer on topic "The Anomaly of an Asian–American Woman in
The 21st Century: Analyzing Intersectionality and Challenging Societal Norms in Mainstream
Media." She reasoned that Asian–American women are in minority group because they aren't white
and invisible for movie makers. They constantly struggle with self–identity. Jacky provided some

Romeo And Juliet-Personal Narrative
I propped my head on my hand, straining to stay awake. School was so monotonous. Everything
bored me. It was laughably easy for myself. Of course, I was incredibly smart. I'm not just saying
that. I tested at genius level. I was offered a full ride scholarship to all the ivy league schools, but my
mom didn't want me that far from home. We made a deal, one year at the university close to home,
and then I could go to the college of my choice. I thought it was pretty selfish of her to try to destroy
my future so she could still see her baby boy.

I groaned too. Not because I had anything better to do that weekend than write a paper, but because I
hated Romeo and Juliet. No one could fall in love that fast. Not true love. It was completely
ridiculous. Nobody died for love anymore.
The girl who had ruined everyone's weekend was wearing the snobby girl uniform of gym shorts, a
tee shirt, and pearls. I saw a few other people give her back a dirty look as she slung her tote over
her shoulder and strutted out of the classroom with her nose in the air.
Girls like that made me want to smack my head against the wall. Were there any decent–smart–girls
at college? Girls who didn't just want to get drunk every night? But, even if I wanted to date a girl
like that, she wouldn't look twice at me. When girls saw me they saw a lanky pale geek, and that
was without taking my deformities into account, which were impossible to miss. I wasn't the kind of
guy girls lusted after. Generally, I was okay with that, because there weren't any girls that interested
me.

The Roaring Twenties And The Jazz Age
In today 's society when we assess the differences between men and women they appear to be fairly
similar. When we compare women 's rights and equalities to the 1900 's it 's clear to see we have
made great strives. During the 1900 's women were treated as inferiors when compared to men and
they were struggling to fight for their basic rights. During this time women were highly encouraged
to marry at a young age and if they chose to go into the work force their options were limited to
domestic jobs such as becoming a secretary, teacher or salesclerk. ("The Changing Role", 2014).
The 1920 's are referred to as "The Roaring Twenties" or the "The Jazz Age" and during this time an
author by the name of Anita Loos produced the novel Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. This novel is told
from a first person perspective and uses a theme of satire to expose the absurdities of men 's views
of women during the 1900 's.
The protagonist of the novel, Lorelei, is a stereotypical 'dumb blonde '. Lorelei can be described as a
"naïve hero". According to The Bedford Glossary of Critical and Literary Terms a naïve hero is
"...the narrative of a work, who cannot fully comprehend the world around him or her and thus
consistently but unwittingly misinterprets events of situations," (Murfin & Ray, 326). Lorelei
deceivingly portrays herself to men as youthful, innocent, naïve and unaware of the consequence of
her actions. Lorelei develops the narrative and themes of the novel through

Analyzing Gentlemen Prefer Blondes By Lorelei Lee
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (GDB) is a literary narrative, since it is a written work that involves a
plot and a particular point–of–view. In this case, GPB is told through a first–person perspective
through the character, Lorelei Lee. 2) What function of literature, according to the four we learned,
does this text fulfill? Explain your reasoning by selecting a moment from the text and describing
how this scene demonstrates the function you chose. This text, GPB, fulfills the entertainment
function of literature. For example, on the last paragraph, the protagonist, Lorelei Lee, describes a
time where everyone around her wanted her to pursue a musical career. However, she did not want
to pursue this type of career and through her humorous narrative she describes how she became
temperamental while practicing her music. For instance, she addresses the coincidence that music
causes her to lose her temper while writing helps her to take all the temperament out of her. Lorelei
entertains us by the fact that by writing about this moment she has written a lot. She is also
humoring us with the fact that writing about an event that causes her temperament, calms her down
as well. This passage makes the reader wonder what other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

result, she becomes quite fatigued and does not feel the need to do anything until the time comes to
hang out with him again. She then ends up writing about the possibility of being an authoress and
how it calms her down. The irony of this text is that although Lorelei says there is nothing
interesting that happens to her, she already wrote two pages onto the next date. The other ironic
point, is the fact that although she says writing takes the temperament out of her, she became
temperamental writing about her

The Beauty Of Women
Women have had their worth decided by their beauty since the world began. The beauty industry has
made millions off telling women that they need this product to matter, literature has been painting
women as plot devices or prizes for year, and television tends to only show thin and beautiful
women. Even now, women call themselves "snacks" and "delicious" as if we only exist to be
consumed. We are constantly taught to laugh at jokes we don't find funny, to tear down other
women, that our bodies are not our own, and that our value is determined by what size dress we
wear. Women are brought up in a society that teaches them that being pretty is the price they must
pay to occupy space in the world. Warsan Shire, a British–Somali poet said "It's not my
responsibility to be beautiful. I'm not alive for that purpose. My existence is not about how desirable
you find me" (Shire). However, some female authors have chosen to revolutionize female narratives.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by Anita Loos and Black Oxen by Gertrude Atherton were a direct
challenge to the idea that a woman's identity were wrapped up in her beauty. In Loos's Gentlemen
Prefer Blondes, a young woman journals about her travels and the men she meets along the way.
Initially, one can assume that Lorelei, the protagonist, is simply an airhead who thrives off of the
attention of men. The text appears to be playing on a stereotype. However, Loos turns this
stereotype on its head as it becomes more clear that Lorelei is

She keeps souls in a skull she wears around her neck. Her name is Lorelei, a river nymph who has
lurked near the rocks in the Rhine for centuries. You may have heard of her, even. Many a sad song
bears her name in the title. She cannot help herself, though. She takes no joy in this grim, grotesque
task of hers. It is simply the way of the river nymphs. Quietly, she lounges on a flat rock jutting out
from the Rhine. She absentmindedly drums her fingers against the skull's smooth cranium. It
belonged to a man, once. His name was Bernard, her first victim. He was a big, bear of a man, and
easily as brave. Unfortunately, he was no match for the fateful Lorelei. She sighs lightly. That day

silhoette on the horizon. She remains comfortably seated on her rock, as the ship comes into focus.
When the vessel is mere yards away, she splashes into the Rhine. Holding up her sacred skull, she

the ship veers off course, and wrecks among the jagged rocks. Willingly, the sailors swim to her, and
she welcomes them with open arms. The nymph hugs them to her breast, and one by one, she steals

The Influence Of Mise-En-Scene In Film
The Influence of Mise–en–scene in Film
Since the 1900's, people have enjoyed the art of film. A big part of the film process is called mise–
en–scene, which loosely translates to, in front of screen. Mise–en–scene includes many things that
are being filmed, such as, lighting, props, camera angles, sound, costumes, characters, and much
more. Each part of the mise–en–scene adds to the success of the film, but some more than others.
The part that can be most obvious to the audience is the costuming. Another part some people can
pick up on is the character placement. One of the more important parts of the mise–en–scene, that
someone without film experience may not see, are the angles in relation to the scene. "In presenting
stories on screen, the cinema relies on actors and actresses on stage events, much as they are staged
in the theater. The term "mise–en–scene" describes this activity" (Belton, 47). Belton is saying that

In about the fourth scene Lorelei, Dorothy, and Gus get onto the ship before the boat leaves. The
angle of the camera starts high on Lorelei walking down the hall making the hallway appear longer.
When the camera tracks Lorelei to the windows it flattens out making a longer medium shot and
made her the center of the shot giving her the look of importance. The next part of the scene when
Lorelei is talking to Gus, the angle again changes to a slightly high angle making the area appear
bigger and giving Gus the advantage of looking more important than Lorelei. This continuous flow
of angles and movement sets the tone for the conversations of the two lovers. The angle changes to a
low angle when Dorothy starts singing. The angle helps keep the focus on Dorothy and keep her in
the focus of the scene, rather than the rest of the Olympian team. This is only one part of the movie
that utilizes the angles to create the look of wealth and keep the focus on the main

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Essay
When it was written in 1925, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, by Anita Loos was heralded as a
tremendous novel. It was seen as cutting edge and insightful, yet somewhat risqué in its portrayal of
Lorelei Lee and her escapades. I can see how this may have been thought at that time, seeing as how
women were looked at in such a different way then they are currently. The fact that a women with as
little know–how as Lorelei can manipulate men the way that she does, leaves no question as to who
is the superior gender in Loos' mind. While the books is quite amusing, and does have many
strengths, if it is looked at in the context of women's struggles with issues such as domesticity,
sexuality and socioeconomic standing it seems less and less like such ... Show more content on

I know that the fact that she is so privileged adds a very amusing edge to the novel, but it really
seems quite inaccurate. Since it was originally published in Harper's Bazaar, it has to be noted that
the women who would be reading such periodicals would be of the working or middle class. Seeing
a protagonist like Lorelei who rose to the top without working may have been nice for these women
to read, something akin to a fairy tale, it still is certainly unrepresentative of the average woman.
Taking into account the inflation of the past seventy–five years, I still do not know anyone who
would call up their father (or father–like person) and ask them for $10,000. It is the things like this
that make me completely unable to identify with Lorelei, and I find it hard to believe that many
women at the time would have been able to either.
Something that I feel many women at the time, and still some to this day can identify with, is
Lorelei's use of her sexuality to get what she wants from men. It reminds me of the whole "treating"
phenomenon mentioned in Cheap Amusements. While did not have sex with men for the presents
they gave her, she certainly wasn't above putting on a negligée and batting her eyelashes to make
them give her presents or do her favors. There was not a man in the book who did not fall victim to
her in one way or

Essay on Television Today Versus the 1950s
How many people today watch family sitcoms to imitate or compare values with their own?
Probably not as many as there were in the 1950s. In Stephanie Coontz's "What We Really Miss
about the 1950s", she discusses why people feel more nostalgic towards growing up in the 1950s,
and how she disagrees that 1950s wasn't the decade that we really should like or remember best.
Apart from economic stability, family values played an important part then. Through television
sitcoms, such as "Leave it to Beaver", "Father knows Best", families watched them to make sure
they were living correctly. It was like guidance and somewhat reassurance. However, values of
families have changed, and this is shown on sitcoms today. We watch sitcoms today for ... Show

In today's sitcom they show problems that children have at school, with family and friends. Rory has
problems with worrying about getting into college. She has troubles with relationships and she never
always get along with Lorelei. These however are not shown as much on sitcoms in the 1950s.
Children then were seen as always happy and whenever they had problems, it would always work
out fine.
Reality is never really shown on television. Especially in 1950s sitcoms, reality situations such as
economic and race were often hidden from audiences. On sitcoms, poor people made enough to
have essential belongings. There was never unemployment or major financial problems. The truth as
Coontz states, "Throughout the 1950s, poverty was higher than it is today" (Coontz 40). This sort of
reality is often apart of the plot shown in today's sitcoms. In "Gilmore Girls", Lorelei would be
considered middle class, and she had financial problems when she wanted to open an inn. For
awhile, being unemployed she had to borrow from her parents and friends. This gives audiences a
sense of reality that can be seen in happening to somebody watching the show. This makes sitcoms
today much more believable.
Different cultures and race are also widely accepted in today's sitcoms. Sometimes, programs may
show racial difficulties like we see in real life. In "Gilmore Girls" Rory has friends who come from

A Short Story : A Story?
New York City was pulsing with life. Street acts were setting up and vendors were already calling
people over to try their food and drinks. Lorelei Locke breathed in the combined smell of grease,
gasoline, and garbage that she had grown used to. She was a city girl.
In Faith's apartment, Lorelei could peer into other apartments if she wished. There was a man with

And right behind her was Madison White. Normally, Lorelei would've chalked this up to

Comparing Plath's The Bell Jar And Its Affiliates
The Bell Jar and Its Affiliates
Frequently, a writer will express the same symbols and themes in a variety of their works. This is the
case with Sylvia Plath, who not only wrote a multitude of poems, but also wrote the renowned
novel, The Bell Jar. Three of Plath's poems that share similar elements to her novel are "Lorelei",
"Daddy", and "The Applicant". These ideas include death beckoning the characters, an unstable
family unit, and sexism towards women. The poems "Lorelei", "Daddy", and "The Applicant" can
be compared to Plath's novel The Bell Jar, by examining the key themes and characteristics of the
works. The first of Plath's poems that is comparable to The Bell Jar is "Lorelei". In both of the
works, death beckons to the characters. In "Lorelei", siren–like creatures beckon for the speaker to
drown herself. The speaker notes how their "ice–hearted calling" (Lorelei 31) is compelling her to
commit suicide. This can be compared to the ocean waves in The Bell Jar, which "[draw] back, like

This poem shows all of the sexist expectations of a woman that the protagonist in The Bell Jar hopes

ideals, refusing to learn a new way of writing as "[she] hate[s] the idea of serving men in any way"
(Bell Jar 76). Esther also goes so far as to proclaim that she does not want to get married. She states
that "the last thing she want[s is] infinite security and to be the place an arrow shoots off from. [She

The film Boyhood by Richard Linklater includes a lot of grey areas and moral ambiguities, just like
real life so it is difficult to judge whether a person is strictly a "good" person or a "bad" person.
Despite how difficult it is to make generalizations about the characters' character, Mason Evans Sr
(Ethan Hawke) seems to generally be a good man, and, overall, a fairly good father to Mason Jr
(Ellar Coltrane) and Samantha (Lorelei Linklater). Two scenes that show this are the scene when
he's first introduced and takes the kids out for a few hours, and the scene when he takes middle–
schooler Mason on a camping trip, just the two of them. The reason why the scene where he's first
introduced is important both in the story and in showing that

Industrialization In Ireland

  • 1. Industrialization in Ireland When Ireland began to industrialize in the 1960s and 1970s, why did it mostly occur in rural Ireland and what were the consequences for the rural residence? Industrialisation in the 1960s and 1970s. When most people in the world think of Ireland, they imagine green fields with farm animals, old cottages, stone walls, rocky roads, people riding around on horse–back and men working in the bogs. However Ireland actually has one of the quickest fastest economies in the world. Rural Industrialisation played a huge role in this growth. Industrialisation is a very important part of Irish history. It was a new beginning for the Irish people living in rural areas and it created a change in gender composition within the labour force. Women were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This also affected family relationships as the women no longer experienced the world solely with their families. Women would usually be given land from their fathers to build a family home however with them now receiving their own wage from the factories some would build their houses elsewhere with their spouses to maintain their independence from their fathers. Their independence also caused family diversity on religious views as women weren't following the traditional Irish way of life. As they were not under supervision, they could travel to other towns to buy condoms, going against their religious faith. Diversity developed between the entrepreneurial middle class and the working class in the rural areas as there was differences in wages, education and jobs. This meant that the interclass was blurred creating a class–less society. Hiring of women had some consequences for trade unions. Since the 1970s we have seen the increasing of trade unions militancy in the state sector leading to them declining in the private sector. This is because of their lack of attention to the needs and rights of the women working in these factories. Three ways the trade union could have provided for these women working in the factories are equal pay, crèches and maternity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Myth Story : The Disappearance Of Lorelei Myth Story: The Disappearance of Lorelei There once lived a beautiful nymph named Lorelei on the Rhine River. The only thing more beautiful than her physical beauty was her voice. When she sang, it is said that no one can resist, and anyone hearing her irresistible song would not be able to avoid death. One day, a proud, young warrior, Ronald, and his father were boating down the Rhine River and Ronald soon heard Lorelei's alluring song. When he heard Lorelei's voice, he felt as if there were invisible arms pulling him to her. The sun was beginning to set, slowly enveloping the men in darkness; however, Ronald continued to row towards to the rocks. Ronald's father who figured out what was happening warned Ronald that he was being lured by Lorelei. When he heard his father say the name, he suddenly saw the beautiful nymph sitting on the cliff combing her hair. Ronald heard the nymph sing his name, and he dove into the water. Despite Lorelei's song, the old man was able to turn the boat around. When the old man made his way back home, he convinced a court of soldiers to bring the enchantress to him, dead or alive. The soldiers arrived at the mountains and once again, Lorelei was combing her hair. The men told Lorelei that they had come to destroy her, but Lorelei told them "the Rhine is coming for me." The water rose around the nymph, carried her away, and washed Ronald's body ashore. Sailors still hear her voice, soft and beautiful, trying to lure them to death (Friedman ... • 9. Film Analysis :'samson ( Hwv 57 ) Samson (HWV 57) is a three–act oratorio by George Frideric Handel. It was the first oratorio he wrote after the Messiah. The oratorio deals with the biblical figure Samson and it is also based on "Samson Agonistes" by John Milton. The aria happens at the end of the Oratorio to serve as a happy ending with its joyous flare. The instrumentation has a trumpet doubling the voice throughout the piece as it is eluded in the text of Angel–trumpets. Le Nozze di Figaro is one of Mozart's most popular operas, with the libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. Act 2 begins in the bedroom of Countess Rosina Almaviva, where she laments her husband's perceived infidelity with Susana, her maid, in the aria "Porgi Amour". Franz Schubert was one of the most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This example of lieder is a great example of Romantic poetry dealing with nature and the human condition with emotion. The poetry is by poet Ludwig Heinrich Christoph Hölty. Clara Schumann paved the way for women composers and was a finer musician than many of her contemporaries. Clara Schumann was renowned in her time, for her outstanding piano skills and her performances as a child prodigy. She composed "Lorelei" in 1843; it is towards the end of her lieder output from the years 1831 to 1853. The text is by German Poet Heinrich Heine, a favorite author among Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. "Die Lorelei" is one of his most popular poems and was set to music by other composers, but Clara's musical setting has been lovingly referred to as the 'Female equivalent to "Der Erlkönig." Hugo Wolf was another nineteenth–century composer who specialized in lieder. He wrote hundreds of lieder and composed other works, including two operas. His style is linked to the Second Viennese School of Arnold Schoenberg, Alan Berg, and Anton Webern. Wolf's lieder continually have grand moments of expressiveness. His lieder and compositions have complex harmonic motions; Verschwiegene Liebe especially is harmonically thick all while maintaining its sweetness. Richard Strauss was a leading German composer that spanned the late nineteenth century into the twentieth century. He is best known for his numerous operas, like Salome and Der ... Looking into your beautiful blue eyes, holding your tiny hand in mine for the first time. I see you now as you grow into a young lady, right before my eyes. I cannot tell you just how very proud I am of you. Once upon a time, I was like you. I know you are shaking your head thinking, "you don't understand meeee." Oh but I do. You see I wasn't always the prehistoric Mom–Asaurus Rex. Believe it or not, I had the same problems you have, and I too, thought my mother was way out of touch, and she had to be the dumbest person on the planet. My mom used to tell me useless junk like, "don't wish so hard to grow up.. these truly are the best years of your life and you will want them back." This will shock you, but guess what she was right all along. Life does go by quicker than we realize sometimes. Cherish every moment, enjoy the little things. David Foster Wallace E Unibus Pluram Summary Quotidian Magic In his essay "E Unibus Pluram" David Foster Wallace critiques the fast–cutting tropes of contemporary cinema and television as meretriciously catering to our desire to transcend our average daily lives. These hysterical collages are, in his words, "unsubtle in their whispers that, somewhere, life is quicker, denser, more interesting... more lively." We leave these films dazzled, punching the air, ready to do combat with a gang of bad guys or lose a pursuer in a car chase, but enjoy none of the edifying potential that Leo Tolstoy and other early theorizers of cinema's potential saw in the fledgling art form. • 33. Women : The Role Of Women In The 1920s The 19th Amendment, passed in 1920, marked an immense leap forward with regard to the role of women in American society. The embrace of personal freedom by the "New Woman" is reflected in the 1925 novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, by Anita Loos, and the 1953 American musical comedy film adaptation by Howard Hawks. In the twenty–eight years that separated these works, however, a different vision of society – and in particular, of women – arose, and this is depicted through the presentation of female sexuality, gender dominance, and intellect, showing that the women of the 1950's were far more empowered than their 1920's sisters. A direct outcome of the economic and social evolution of the 1920s was that the "New Woman" pursued her freedom by aiming to be more than a household drudge: she saw herself as deserving to be pampered and spoilt by an adoring man. Loos's Lorelei is willing to serve as arm candy for rich men who desire for beauty and good time. As a product of capitalism, she equates culture with tangible assets. Both protagonists pursue this goal without using their sexuality as a weapon to exploit the men they encounter for material gain. In fact, the short hair, boyish look, flattened chest and knee length skirts were just a few ways to describe the young liberal women of the 20s, nicknamed 'flappers'. Loos instead presents them as stereotypical 'damsels in distress,' waiting for a prince on a white horse to rescue them. This rescue comes in the form of being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In her only novel, The Bell Jar, the protagonist, Esther Greenwood, takes the reader on a journey that explores the life and struggles of a young female poet and a tragic heroine. Esther's experiences reflect those of Sylvia Plath's. Plath describes her life as she saw it, confessing her thoughts and feelings to her audience. In her poems, "Perseus", "Lorelei", and "Lady Lazarus", Plath further explores the themes of death and suffering, and uses the portrayal of the tragic heroes/heroines in "Perseus" as symbolism. Esther's character takes on the role of a tragic heroine. She attempts to excel in her writing but achieves no such success, an undertaking similar to that of Sylvia Plath. A plethora of events, such as the Rosenbergs being sentenced to death and Hilda's comment about the situation, "'I'm so glad they're going to die,'" Esther not being accepted to the writing course program, and Esther almost being raped, causes her to contemplate and almost succeed in committing suicide (Plath 100). I could remember just constantly waking up that night because Loera kept having pain in her abdomen and I constantly kept falling asleep. My mother and I waited for a couple hours while Loera was being checked. We thought we were just going to be sent back home but turned out that she was two centimeters dilated and she would be going into labor soon. I was extremely shocked, I did not expect that it would be the day I would have become a father. I called more family and within hours we had more support. Finally we were in the delivery room, and the nurses kept coming in and out and checking to see how she was doing. Something did not seem right. Both films are musicals about cabaret dancers except Gentlemen Prefer Blondes stars two leading ladies whereas Cabaret only has one leading lady. Another similarity between the two films is the gold digger aspect, Lorelei being the gold digger in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes are only interested in materialistic things which is very similar to Sally's interest in a wealthy man except Sally is also interested in what a wealthy man can do for her acting career. A few of the differences in the two films were that they are filmed during different era's and so being that Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was filmed in the early fifties, it is much more conservative and even though Cabaret is set in the thirties the film was actually filmed in the early seventies when it was popular to really push the envelope and so this films plot is much more risqué. Another difference with these two films is that in Cabaret the plot is more dramatic really focusing on the rise of Nazism and the topic of sexual preference by having the three main characters becoming involved in a love triangle. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was more of a carefree comedy with not a lot of the plot. Overall I would have to say that the plot for Cabaret had more substance, therefor keeping me more interested than Gentlemen Prefer Blondes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Black Oxen Analysis 1 In Gertrude Atherton's Black Oxen, a man named Clavering falls in love with a woman who is not what she appears to be. When Clavering first sees Madame Zattiany, he views her as an object. He refers to her as "it" rather than "she" when he describes her at the beginning of the book. He states that, "in spite of its smooth white skin and rounded contours above an undamaged throat, it was, subtly, not a young face" (Atherton, page 45). Atherton is using Clavering as a vehicle to argue that men tend to see women as objects. It is easier to defend injustice if one can dehumanize the opposing side. It seems as if he is taking stock of her features, as if she were a cow being sold at a market, Clavering is observing her in the hopes of later devouring her. Clavering sees her and knows she is different because she draws attention to herself, she doesn't just sit in silence. She simply isn't behaving as Clavering believes a woman should. There is an uncertainty that comes when Clavering sees Mary disregarding the manners of the time. Then he observes her in great detail. His inspection reveals just how superficial Clavering is. He examines her so thoroughly, as if she was a prized mare at auction: " her forehead was perhaps too high, but it was full, and thick hair was brushed back from a sharp point. Her eyebrows, thank Heaven, were many shades darker than her hair" (Atherton, pages 44–45). It is through these observations that Atherton emphasizes men's obsession with the ... Déjà vu can be strange and confusing, but it also can be joyful like the 2014 drama film Boyhood. Boyhood was nominated for a total of 6 Oscars and was directed by Richard Linklater. Boyhood stars Ellar Coltrane as Mason, a boy who lives with his mom (Patricia Arquette) and his older sister Samantha (Lorelei Linklater). The story is told through Mason's eyes as he grows up and faces the similar challenges that we all had to face growing up. I will use Anne Freadman's chapter titled "Uptake" to specifically looked at how the novel is being taken up by Twitter, and turned into a promotional device. My line of research follows the question: 'How do different twitter users, use the platform to uptake the novel, and turn it into a form of promotion?' I will start my presentation by looking at the scholarship behind my presentation, focusing on Freadman's example of the Ryan death penalty case. The tweet is a clear display of promotion, as it tries to incite the Fifteen Dogs Twitter public to come to come to the bar. The second example I will discuss is a little more abstract. It looks at the self–promotion of a freelance entertainment writer, named Renee Gold. Gold also uses the Fifteen Dog hash tag, but she is not part of the Fifteen Dogs twitter public. I will discuss why Gold's tweet can be considered a form of self–promotion. I will address the idea that, Gold's Twitter feed centres around a different genre, of celebrities and fashion. I will also explain that, this is the only time she has ever tweeted about the novel, and she makes this tweet directly after Alexis wins the Giller Prize. • 61. Final Reflection Paper Final Reflection Since my youth, I've had little trouble suspending my disbelief in media, especially film and TV. As such, issues such as racial or sexual representation meant little to me, as I would end up projecting myself onto whatever character I most related to, skin, gender, or sexuality be damned. Growing up like this, I identified with many characters of diverse personalities (not necessarily skin tones), and found myself rather complacent with the state of the medium as a result. Looking back in history, however, I realized that film didn't always feature this diversity of mind, and what it does feature today is still significantly lacking. While I believe that Hollywood has made a significant amount of progress over that years, it still features significant issues that need attention, especially in regards to character portrayal. As a child, I was largely unaware of the blatant racism and sexism that permeated early film history due to a combination of lacking a critical eye and rarely seeing old film. Popular films such as D.W. Griffith's The Birth of A Nation(1915) and Broken Blossoms(1919) center their plots on archaic depictions of race, with the former glorifying white supremacy and the KKK and the latter using the term "Asian" as a disability to be overcome rather than an intrinsic part of one's character. Watching the "otherness" of these characters opened my eyes to many of the larger issues that would be discussed in the class, as they were very extreme ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. John Steinbeck's 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' I have recently read four paragraphs of your novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and I must say it is a very comical narrative indeed. One aspect I noticed while reading, is the plot setting. You structured it in a way that it informed the reader about the protagonist's background, while providing definite interpretive clues about the character's thought process. For instance, the protagonist, Lorelei Lee, recalls a time when an observant friend commented that if she were to write down her thoughts, it would produce a book. This not only defines her character, but also provides how others think of her. Moreover, most men she meets assume that since she is blonde and talkative, they can take advantage of her. However, that is the irony of Anita ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The point–of–view (POV) is one of the foundations that create the meaning of the story. By writing it in first person, the author is able to convey the irony or humor of the story through the character. For example, Lorelei acknowledges the humor at the possibility of pursuing an authoress career. Further mentioning that prior to this idea, her family wanted her to pursue a musical career. However, Lorelei despised the long hours of practicing the mandolin that came along with pursing such a career. Recalling. that she became temperamental, threw the mandolin away, and ended up quitting. This event, specifically the throwing of the mandolin, signifies how severe her temperaments can become from outright frustration. Yet, a positive solution rose up from this negative event, she found that writing keeps her tranquil and collected. Whereas, practicing her instrument releases fidgety frustration, due to the long hours of repetitive practice. Humorously, she says that she should smile, since she got carried away writing about this incident; finishing the diary entry in a rather sour mood. Concluding, that writing in first–person utilizes the skills needed to grasp the true meaning of Anita Loos' character: a dramatic and cunning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The shows in the past portrayed a modest conservative family. These families consist of a hardworking man and a stay at home woman, married raising their own biological children. As the years went by, television has started to portray a more liberal definition of what a family means in today's world. Because of today's TV shows, there are different ideas about what a family should look like. Families on TV are not always a married couple containing one man and one woman raising their own children. We now have many shows that support gay rights when it comes to marriage and being parents. The hit comedy "Modern Family" has the funny loveable characters of Mitchell and Cameron. They adopted a baby girl from Vietnam. The series also shows the wedding between the two men, as well as the comical outcomes when they try to raise their daughter the best way possible. As Greg Graffin wrote in his article "Anarchy in the Tenth Grade" "It is also a shining example of how easy it is to follow the party line and champion a bandwagon mentality–which only motivates me to keep fighting for originality." The male pollen tube is lured toward the female ovule, which leads to bursting of the pollen tube and the release of cytoplasmic sperm, permitting fertilization. The Cheung Lab identified many vital proteins involved in this process. Mainly, these proteins include, FERONIA (FER), LORELEI (LRE), and ANXUR (ANX). The surface receptor kinase FER was found to be an upstream regulator of plant RHO GTPases (RAC/ROPs) and multiple transmembrane spanning NADPH oxidases. The localization of FER to the membrane is highly dependent on the GPI– anchored protein LORELEI–like–GPI–anchored protein 1 (LLG1). Proper interaction between FER and LLG1 prevents ... It is common to see the Cheung Lab prove their findings extensively using multiple approaches to the same problem to ensure the production of high quality work. Working with plants, the mapping of genes and generating mutants plays a critical role in how plants are studied. By inserting genes of interest such as FER with a GFP tag, fluorescence microscopy becomes a solution in observing the localization of FER during different stages in the plants life as well as different conditions of its environment. In addition to tagging proteins, the Cheung lab heavily relies on fluorescence microscopy to visualize many different structures and molecules in different types of cells throughout the plant. With the combination of fluorescence, confocal, and electron microscopy, the Cheung Lab can utilize different approaches in overcoming the scientific challenges they face. Dr. Cheung clearly demonstrated the interactions with FER to permit localization with LLG1 as well as membrane embedding with LRE. It also showed the intercultural relations that cross–national boundaries, cultural relations within a particular society, and the interactions between female activities such as art and literature. The first speaker, Krista Aldritch presented the topic "Embracing the 'Dumb Blonde': Navigating Identity in Anita Loos' Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." She argued that "dumb blonde" can actually be very intellectual and use her look to get what she wants. Krista supported her argument by using Lorelei Lee, the main character of Anita Loos' "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." Lorelei Lee's character reveals what it means to be a woman in 1920s. • 89. The Roaring Twenties And The Jazz Age In today 's society when we assess the differences between men and women they appear to be fairly similar. When we compare women 's rights and equalities to the 1900 's it 's clear to see we have made great strives. During the 1900 's women were treated as inferiors when compared to men and they were struggling to fight for their basic rights. During this time women were highly encouraged to marry at a young age and if they chose to go into the work force their options were limited to domestic jobs such as becoming a secretary, teacher or salesclerk. ("The Changing Role", 2014). The 1920 's are referred to as "The Roaring Twenties" or the "The Jazz Age" and during this time an author by the name of Anita Loos produced the novel Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. This novel is told from a first person perspective and uses a theme of satire to expose the absurdities of men 's views of women during the 1900 's. The protagonist of the novel, Lorelei, is a stereotypical 'dumb blonde '. Lorelei can be described as a "naïve hero". According to The Bedford Glossary of Critical and Literary Terms a naïve hero is "...the narrative of a work, who cannot fully comprehend the world around him or her and thus consistently but unwittingly misinterprets events of situations," (Murfin & Ray, 326). Lorelei deceivingly portrays herself to men as youthful, innocent, naïve and unaware of the consequence of her actions. Lorelei develops the narrative and themes of the novel through ... In this case, GPB is told through a first–person perspective through the character, Lorelei Lee. 2) What function of literature, according to the four we learned, does this text fulfill? Explain your reasoning by selecting a moment from the text and describing how this scene demonstrates the function you chose. This text, GPB, fulfills the entertainment function of literature. For example, on the last paragraph, the protagonist, Lorelei Lee, describes a time where everyone around her wanted her to pursue a musical career. However, she did not want to pursue this type of career and through her humorous narrative she describes how she became temperamental while practicing her music. For instance, she addresses the coincidence that music causes her to lose her temper while writing helps her to take all the temperament out of her. The beauty industry has made millions off telling women that they need this product to matter, literature has been painting women as plot devices or prizes for year, and television tends to only show thin and beautiful women. Even now, women call themselves "snacks" and "delicious" as if we only exist to be consumed. We are constantly taught to laugh at jokes we don't find funny, to tear down other women, that our bodies are not our own, and that our value is determined by what size dress we wear. Women are brought up in a society that teaches them that being pretty is the price they must pay to occupy space in the world. Warsan Shire, a British–Somali poet said "It's not my responsibility to be beautiful. I'm not alive for that purpose. My existence is not about how desirable you find me" (Shire). However, some female authors have chosen to revolutionize female narratives. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes by Anita Loos and Black Oxen by Gertrude Atherton were a direct challenge to the idea that a woman's identity were wrapped up in her beauty. In Loos's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, a young woman journals about her travels and the men she meets along the way. A big part of the film process is called mise– en–scene, which loosely translates to, in front of screen. Mise–en–scene includes many things that are being filmed, such as, lighting, props, camera angles, sound, costumes, characters, and much more. Each part of the mise–en–scene adds to the success of the film, but some more than others. The part that can be most obvious to the audience is the costuming. Another part some people can pick up on is the character placement. One of the more important parts of the mise–en–scene, that someone without film experience may not see, are the angles in relation to the scene. It was seen as cutting edge and insightful, yet somewhat risqué in its portrayal of Lorelei Lee and her escapades. I can see how this may have been thought at that time, seeing as how women were looked at in such a different way then they are currently. The fact that a women with as little know–how as Lorelei can manipulate men the way that she does, leaves no question as to who is the superior gender in Loos' mind. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I know that the fact that she is so privileged adds a very amusing edge to the novel, but it really seems quite inaccurate. Since it was originally published in Harper's Bazaar, it has to be noted that the women who would be reading such periodicals would be of the working or middle class. Seeing a protagonist like Lorelei who rose to the top without working may have been nice for these women to read, something akin to a fairy tale, it still is certainly unrepresentative of the average woman. Taking into account the inflation of the past seventy–five years, I still do not know anyone who would call up their father (or father–like person) and ask them for $10,000. It is the things like this that make me completely unable to identify with Lorelei, and I find it hard to believe that many women at the time would have been able to either. Something that I feel many women at the time, and still some to this day can identify with, is Lorelei's use of her sexuality to get what she wants from men. It reminds me of the whole "treating" phenomenon mentioned in Cheap Amusements. • 125. Essay on Television Today Versus the 1950s How many people today watch family sitcoms to imitate or compare values with their own? Probably not as many as there were in the 1950s. In Stephanie Coontz's "What We Really Miss about the 1950s", she discusses why people feel more nostalgic towards growing up in the 1950s, and how she disagrees that 1950s wasn't the decade that we really should like or remember best. Apart from economic stability, family values played an important part then. Through television sitcoms, such as "Leave it to Beaver", "Father knows Best", families watched them to make sure they were living correctly. It was like guidance and somewhat reassurance. However, values of families have changed, and this is shown on sitcoms today. We watch sitcoms today for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In today's sitcom they show problems that children have at school, with family and friends. Rory has problems with worrying about getting into college. She has troubles with relationships and she never always get along with Lorelei. These however are not shown as much on sitcoms in the 1950s. Children then were seen as always happy and whenever they had problems, it would always work out fine. Reality is never really shown on television. Especially in 1950s sitcoms, reality situations such as economic and race were often hidden from audiences. On sitcoms, poor people made enough to have essential belongings. There was never unemployment or major financial problems. The truth as Coontz states, "Throughout the 1950s, poverty was higher than it is today" (Coontz 40). This sort of reality is often apart of the plot shown in today's sitcoms. In "Gilmore Girls", Lorelei would be considered middle class, and she had financial problems when she wanted to open an inn. For awhile, being unemployed she had to borrow from her parents and friends. This gives audiences a sense of reality that can be seen in happening to somebody watching the show. This makes sitcoms today much more believable. Different cultures and race are also widely accepted in today's sitcoms. Sometimes, programs may show racial difficulties like we see in real life. In "Gilmore Girls" Rory has friends who come from different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 133. A Short Story : A Story? New York City was pulsing with life. Street acts were setting up and vendors were already calling people over to try their food and drinks. Lorelei Locke breathed in the combined smell of grease, gasoline, and garbage that she had grown used to. She was a city girl. In Faith's apartment, Lorelei could peer into other apartments if she wished. There was a man with two adorable children, a young girl and her grandma, and a nice couple who took care of their adopted son. Late at night, she would watch these functional, loving families. A small pang of jealousy would hit her now and then, but Lorelei would force it away. Instead of hailing a taxi like she had been for the past couple of days, the young woman decided to walk. She joined the mass of people heading for work. To her right, a woman with a toddler on her hip pleaded with who Lorelei presumed to be her boss. A man next to her was ordering someone around and another in front of her was telling someone named Karen about a potential client. And right behind her was Madison White. Normally, Lorelei would've chalked this up to coincidence. Different destinations, same path kind of thing. Except that Lorelei took a shortcut she found yesterday and Madison followed. That wasn't a coincidence. She walked slightly faster, the sound of her sneakers slamming into the concrete simultaneously merging with her heartbeat. Lorelei had suspected that something was up with the woman before, but stalking her in the streets of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 137. Comparing Plath's The Bell Jar And Its Affiliates The Bell Jar and Its Affiliates Frequently, a writer will express the same symbols and themes in a variety of their works. This is the case with Sylvia Plath, who not only wrote a multitude of poems, but also wrote the renowned novel, The Bell Jar. Three of Plath's poems that share similar elements to her novel are "Lorelei", "Daddy", and "The Applicant". These ideas include death beckoning the characters, an unstable family unit, and sexism towards women. The poems "Lorelei", "Daddy", and "The Applicant" can be compared to Plath's novel The Bell Jar, by examining the key themes and characteristics of the works. The first of Plath's poems that is comparable to The Bell Jar is "Lorelei". In both of the works, death beckons to the characters. In "Lorelei", siren–like creatures beckon for the speaker to drown herself. The speaker notes how their "ice–hearted calling" (Lorelei 31) is compelling her to commit suicide. This can be compared to the ocean waves in The Bell Jar, which "[draw] back, like a hand, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This poem shows all of the sexist expectations of a woman that the protagonist in The Bell Jar hopes to escape. The poem objectifies women as possessions that are supposed to "bring teacups and roll away headaches / and do whatever you tell them" (Applicant 13–14). Esther, however, detests these ideals, refusing to learn a new way of writing as "[she] hate[s] the idea of serving men in any way" (Bell Jar 76). Esther also goes so far as to proclaim that she does not want to get married. She states that "the last thing she want[s is] infinite security and to be the place an arrow shoots off from. [She wants] change and excitement and to shoot off in all directions [herself], like the colored arrows from a Fourth of July rocket" (Bell Jar 83). The objectification of women in both The Bell Jar and "The Applicant" is one of the key elements that draw a correlation between the two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 145. Subway Descriptive Writing A man enters the subway station, not knowing if he should go where he would usually go. His hair was a stray and his maroon tie loose. This man has a very charming aura about him. Others would say strange or frightening, but I like to say charming, charming in his own way perhaps. He rushes through the subway station and he slows down to look at the art on the walls. He'd been looking at it for months every time he entered the station, which was every day. It fascinated him, all of the Intricacy. He knew the painting so well, that he could close his eyes and see every little detail in it just from memory. The ground is tiled in the subway station, and back in its day, it was probably once white as snow, but now it has the hue of a rotting basement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "You were listed as her emergency contact, I tried to call but your cell was die" The man was stunned, he did not want anything to happen to her, he did not want her to die. These two were such a joy that it was one of those times where I felt like I have the best job in the entire world. Mom brought these girls into the studio for sibling portraits. The two are 17 months apart. Kensington, or Kenzie, is 18 months old while Lorelei is going to be 3 years old in about a month. Brittany brought her little girls to the newborn photographer studio in the cutest cotton dresses. While the dresses were simple, they were gorgeous and photographed so well. I couldn't have been happier with her choices, and knew as soon as I saw the girls that it would be perfect. Mom was a bit concerned about their shyness around strangers, but she knew ... • 153. Ambiguity In The Movie Boyhood The film Boyhood by Richard Linklater includes a lot of grey areas and moral ambiguities, just like real life so it is difficult to judge whether a person is strictly a "good" person or a "bad" person. Despite how difficult it is to make generalizations about the characters' character, Mason Evans Sr (Ethan Hawke) seems to generally be a good man, and, overall, a fairly good father to Mason Jr (Ellar Coltrane) and Samantha (Lorelei Linklater). Two scenes that show this are the scene when he's first introduced and takes the kids out for a few hours, and the scene when he takes middle– schooler Mason on a camping trip, just the two of them. The reason why the scene where he's first introduced is important both in the story and in showing that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
