Essay On Kurt Vonnegut
One of the many advantages of written language is the ability to pass down important knowledge to younger generations for as long as the text exists.
Some of these writings were meant to pass along examples of how to live one's life and attempt to answer the unanswerable through moral or character
instruction. Fiction literature, however, is superior at delivering these lessons because fiction allows for far more creative freedom for the author to
craft their lesson. By its very nature as moral guidance, this type of writing often appears within a religious context. Khalil Gibran's 1923 masterpiece
The Prophet is a collection of twenty–six short sermons delivered by the prophet Almustafa to the people of Orphalese before his departure home.
The lack of a concrete storyline makes the entire novel a soapbox for Gibran to stand on and preach his wisdom. In fact, the absence of the Prophet's
name from anywhere in the book, except for the beginning, helps to blend the identities of Almustafa, the narrator, and Gibran. Blurred lines between
the three figures makes one believe that Gibran himself is standing among the people of Orphalese, or rather he is the god who is speaking through
Almustafa. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vonnegut still uses religion as a major aspect, however he focuses on the absurdity of religion using Bokononism, a religion created and persecuted on
a whim by two men. The narrator even admits that his religion is only "the bittersweet lies of Bokonon" (Vonnegut 11). One of the over–arching
themes of the story, partly inspired by the narrators Bokononist ideology, is that no matter one's actions or character, the world is essentially
pre–determined and could end any minute. Obviously, Vonnegut isn't a true believer in Bokononism, rather he's a product of his time, which was filled
with uncertainty for the future because of the Cold

How Does Mass Incarceration Affects Society?
The 36th annual Marion Wright Thompson Lecture Series on mass incarceration was great. I chose to attend this lecture because mass incarceration
and experiences of it throughout history are important to me. In the Intro to Women's & Gender Studies class that I previously took in the fall semester
of 2015, I studied the relationship between mass incarceration and race for a bit. That inspired me to attend the Marion Wright Thompson Lecture. I had
knowledge prior to the lecture, so I wanted to further understand how deeply mass incarceration affects society as a whole. I was not surprised when the
speaker, Khalil Gibran Muhammad, immediately mentioned racism. I am heavily aware of how race and mass incarceration intersect. Institutionalized

He effectively delivered evidence of injustice against the black community, especially with the more familiar names/cases that are more recent. Not
only does Muhammad understand that there is a problem with racism being linked to mass incarceration, but he acknowledges the fact that this will
not change without the effort to do so. I completely agree with Khalil Muhammad. I truly believe that as a whole, society will fail to make progress
without fully recognizing the imbalance of political and social power. If America specifically tried to undo its wrongdoings, one of the best ways to
do so would be by teaching the history of it. By having this knowledge passed onto both the younger and older generations, I believe that we can
definitely see an improvement in how society functions. Rather than constantly facing inequality, we as a society may find more opportunities to build
for a better future, rather than regressing. I would definitely recommend this lecture to everyone to raise more awareness of what is really going on in
our criminal justice system, and how race and class share such a close relationship with each other in regards to mass

Compare And Contrast On Good And Evil
In the world today, there have been many tragic occurrences that can be seen as evil, for example the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. On
Wednesday February 14, 2018 Nikolas Cruz was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. Cruz, a former student of Stoneman Douglas, opened
fire killing 17 and wounded many others. When looking at the situation, Many people argue about Cruz's motive. Authors like William Golding, would
argue that Nikolas Cruz is a innately evil person, his true purpose was to hurt the kids. Whereas authors like, Gibran would argue that we, the people,
failed Nikolas because all the signs showed that he wasn't mentally stable, but no one acted on reflecting that it was our faults. Both of these authors,
have strong views of what is good and evil, which are reflected through their writings. In Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, and "On
Good and Evil", written by Kahlil Gibran, the two authors come up with their own depictions of good and evil. Through Golding's writing, he
describes the evil within each person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gibran uses repetition of "you are good" which directly relates with the readers implying that there is goodness within each of us. Throughout the
poem there are several different examples, such as "You are good in countless ways," and "You are good when you strive to give of yourself."
(Gibran#) Both these examples make it seems as if he is talking directly with the readers taking it to a personal level to get his point across that
there is goodness within everyone. Along with good there is bound to evil, but instead Gibran sees it differently. He sees evil as a effect of trying
to do good. In one of the first line of the poems Gibran says, "For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst? Verily when good is
hungry it seeks food even in dark caves, and when it thirsts it drinks even of dead waters."

Importance Of America's Gift To My Generation
America's Gift to My Generation Dear Teachers, Parents, kids, and Veterans. I strongly believe that everything unique about America will leave a
very special gift in everyone's heart's. Just like The gifts of Freedom, Pride and Justice, the ones you can never leave behind. It's extremely significant
to note that America has been so offering to us. Not only it has given us many chances, gifts and offers but the thought of making our lives seem so

The Journey Of Ibn Fattouma By Naguib Gibran's On Crime...
Culture is a shared set of beliefs, values, goals, and attitudes within a social, racial, or religious group. Someone's culture is easily shown, even if in
only in the slightest ways. The things people say, their specific beliefs, or the choices they make can give a deep insight into someone's culture. I feel
that culture, in one way or another, is clearly presented in "On Crime and Punishment" by Khalil Gibran as well as "The Journey of Ibn Fattouma", by
Naguib Mahfouz. "On Crime and Punishment" by Khalil Gibran discusses how crimes are committed, but there is almost always more to the story.
Even though this is Arabic literature, I feel that this applies to many cultures. In most cultures, including mine, we are very quick to point the ... Show

On the way, he meets an old man who is supposed to help him get to the land of Gebel, but first he must join the other followers to prepare for the
journey. I feel that culture is shown within this part of the text because all of the followers of the old man sit with him each day to listen and sing.
The groups shared behavior and belief that by doing this, they will be prepared to go to the land of Gebel shows culture within that community.
Each day they do the same thing because it is what they all know and believe and that is exactly what culture is. It also shows an insight into how
the culture teaches people to respect their elders. The people are following and listening to the old man because he is old and considered wiser than
everyone else. This is a common belief among many cultures. In the end of the text, I think it also shows how people can choose to break away from
their culture. It may be that it no longer benefits them or they are just tired of conforming to that culture's standards. Specifically referring to the text,
the group leaves to go to the land of Gebel even though they are not fully prepared for the journey. Due to certain circumstances, they are told to leave
their land. However, they made that final choice to leave, even though the old man said they were not yet ready. They made the conscious decision to

The old poet Kahlil Gibran, a long time ago, once said, "You work that you may keep pace with the soul of the earth. For to be idle is to become a
stranger unto the seasons, and to step out of life's procession, that marches in majesty and proud submission toward the infinite." An interesting
thought, that we work in order to keep pace with the earth. Now, I'm sure you're asking yourself, how can my near minimum wage job, where the
customers treat me like a doormat and I still have to be pleasant and chipper, keep me in sync with the soul of the earth. Well I imagine there are

One of my favorite examples of outstanding volunteer work is the Universal Access Parks Project, in which a group of students along with several
teachers planned, attained funding for, and ultimately built a handicap accessible park behind the Lynnwood Pool. The park serves as a lasting
testimony of our hard work and dedication for years to come. Now, not all of us can be a class, club or A.S.B. president and not all of us can
volunteer weekly for a worthy cause or organization, we cannot do everything even though we may try. But all of us can, and most of us have
served an instrumental role in an important project or activity. There are so many different aspects of service work and ways of being involved
that to name a few is only grazing the surface. Whether your focus was being in a school club or student government, working with poor children,
or people dying of AIDS, or if it was working for environmental justice or animal rights, if you have done it, it is important. There must be reasons
we give up our time and energy, other than to have a fancy looking resume, or it would not be worth our precious time. So why do we do it?
Often I ask myself, as you do I'm sure, this question of why. It seems to surface more frequently when it is your fifth meeting of the week and it's
only Wednesday, or when you are at school so much you could easily set up a cot and never go home–– do we all remember homecoming week, or

keep on going even in the roughest times. Night by Elie Wiesel in this novel Elie grows up in a small town called Sighet. When the Germans come
to his house and take his family to a concentration camp where his mother and sister died. They continue to work at camps for a year until the
resistance saves them and he was free once again. Elie and the other Jews were questioning their faith on how God would let the Nazis torture the

Elie is saying how simple man are to comprehend God's ways but "Where is God's mercy?"(Wiesel 77) why would God just listen to his people
scream in pain and agony. Was there no sympathy for the Jews or maybe god was angry with the Jews but, for whatever reason the burning and
gassing of Jews should have made him help but sadly he did not. For this particular reason alone is why Elie no longer had faith or hope in his God
for every man, woman, child that died God merely stood aside and watched. This was why Elie no longer would pray to the God who would watch
as his people needed him in their time of need. "Some of the men spoke of God: His mysterious ways, the sins of the Jewish people, and the
redemption to come. As for me, I had ceased to pray. I concurred with Job! I was not denying His existence, but I doubted His absolute
justice."(Wiesel 45) other Jews thought only that they have caused sins to make it seem as is God is punishing them for their sins. As for Elie he
knew the Jews did nothing so sinestful that would bestow this beyond them, and Elie for that reason did believe in his existence but denied praying for
his justice and why he would not save

The Truth Is an Illusion and the Illusion is a Truth "Faith is a knowledge within the heart, beyond the reach of proof." Khalil Gibran. Since long time
ago, people believe in a certain doctrine that distinguish them from others. Practicing specific rituals aiming to achieve the salvation and get rid of the

many conflicts provoked among people either to proof that a one thought is the most right or a certain folk imposes its thought over another for

During this time in Orphalese this Prophet has become accustomed to the cultures and traditions of the land.
The native accepted him as one of their own, and he was no longer a stranger.
Thus it was quite painful for him to think of leaving Oorphalese, however he had to go to his homeland in any circumstances. When it was time for
him to leave the people of Orpahalese asked him to stay, but he couldnГїt stop. Then a wise woman called Altmira, came up with a solution. She did

What Is Good And Evil In The Prophet
Some people believe that poetry is written only by mournful men and women with hate filled and evil behaviors. Khalil Gibran shows us that many
other uses of poetry can be used to express ideas on a widely debated topic on good and evil. In William Golding's, Lord of the Flies, and Khalil Gibran,
The Prophet, their extremely different views of good and evil are apparent. Golding proclaims that evil is in everyone, and that they are born with it
from the beginning. On the other hand, Gibran suggests that everyone is inherently good and born pure, and evil is just being lost or uninspired.
First, Golding seems to imply that when the group of boys are evil to begin with. For instance they abandon their civilized ways, they start acting

The author of the poem also states that everyone is inherently good from the beginning, and that we should be compassionate to those who are
selfish and cruel, for they suffer from greater poverty than the homeless. The author shows us that maybe that good "in others it is a flat stream
that loses itself in angles and bends and lingers before it reaches the shore."(). This helps people realize not judge when one does what may appear
to be "wrong" or "evil", it's just that you're divided and living in your blind world and can't see clear, and not to judge someone too soon.On the other
hand, Golding views human nature completely opposite, since the desire to kill and hunt is in all of us rooted in our genome. "Maybe [...] there is a
beast [...]What I mean is... maybe it's only us." (90–91). There is a large difference between Gibran's view on evil and Golding's view on evil. Golding
thinks that evil is in everyone from the very beginning, and are born with it. However, Gibran thinks that evil comes from good already inside of

How School Is An Environment That Has Great Powers
"One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much
necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child." Carl Jung
Strolling down memory lane, back to school experiences as a child, many different memories come flooding back; some positive ones, and some not as
enjoyable. School is an environment that has great powers. It has the power to influence and shape us, no matter what grade level. Teachers need to
realize the great responsibility they carry, for without them even knowing, they can make everlasting marks and impressions on their students, both
positively and negatively, forever.
Throughout my years in school, I can definitely pick and choose the methods, traits, and behaviors, that I would like to practice and emulate.
Unfortunately though, I also learned the hard way, the traits and behaviors that I forever want to avoid and forget!
Beginning with my ECE years, there are a few things that I remember very clearly. Firstly, which I find very important, my teachers used songs with
whatever they were teaching. "Music is the language of the soul" is not a famous saying for nothing. Kids learn best through song, as opposed to just
listening to teachers talk. This is true for all grades, not only Nursery. The fact that I still remember songs from

Analysis Of Defeat By Kahlil Gibran
Poet Kahlil Gibran, in his poem Defeat, portrays defeat as something that can affect a person positively. Taking an unusual stance towards defeat,
Gibran's purpose is to change his audience's perspective about what failure actually means. Throughout the poem, Gibran goes through a variety of
moods, exemplifying the emotional process that people generally go through when faced with defeat. In each stanza, the poet holds a different point of
view towards defeat by adopting a sarcastic tone in the beginning, only to switch it later on to a confident and resilient one; this better portrays the idea
that defeat does not have to be tied to negative connotations. Through Gibran's use of personification, paradox, and the ongoing metaphor to the 5
stages of grief, the author is able to convey the idea that he speaks from experience and that defeat can be empowering and something to learn from.
At the beginning of the poem, the author personifies defeat and experiences the first two stages of grief to show the audience his own internal struggle
with defeat. Gibran does this to convince his audience that, although it is difficult to see, defeat is a very valuable experience. The beginning of each
stanza starts with "Defeat, my Defeat," creating a beginning syntax similar to that of a letter. By capitalizing the first letter of defeat and addressing it
as an actual person as well as using words associated with endearments to speak about defeat, addressing it as "dearer" and "sweeter" to

tempting of the 2 powers. But, the human race has evolved over thousands of years to become tenacious, to fight for survival, to be a metaphorical light
in a dark, unpropitious situation. Both works ask: what are the limits of the human spirit and how do we fight EVIL within?
Similarly, in the book Lord of the Flies, EVIL is presented as being innate and unwanted, even though it can be used to motivate and aid in critical
situations. When the boys first discovered they were marooned on the island, the little devil on their shoulder (representing the EVIL within the human
spirit) whispered in their ear, 'you are the strongest one, and better off without them. If you don't eliminate them, you will die on this island'.
Ultimately, it would be a bloodbath. First, a power struggle between the groups, then within the groups. EVIL tells people to put their own urges and
needs above the safety and needs of others, no matter the cost. A situation that helps elucidate this was when Roger throws the stones at Henry,
ultimately, he threw to miss. "There was a space ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Roger and his savages were inclined to believe that our willpower isn't tenacious enough to reel one back in once they start to stray from the path.
They gave up on themselves, and was their fatal mistake. Golding's and Gibran's ideas of GOOD and EVIL are very similar, as presented in their works.
Both explain the power struggle between the 2 opposing sides of human nature, The human spirit is feisty enough, strong enough to hold up positively
in the bleakest of situations, and the person that it is within must believe in it as

How Kids Learn Resilience Summary
The Falsehood of Resilience
The article How Kids Learn Resilience is written by Paul Tough and she confesses "for all our talk about non–cognitive skills, nobody has yet found a
reliable way to teach kids to be grittier or more resilient" (Tough 3). A new idea is developing that these characteristics are not found in teaching but
through environmental forces inside the classroom and at home. In the article researchers, economists, American schools, and teachers showcase how
grit and resilience can be placed in the minds of young children and in the middle and high school stages. The author takes us on a journey through
different theories, studies, and programs to help grasp a better understanding of how young children and teenagers can develop ... Show more content on

In comparison, this viewpoint alternated my opinion as Dante Cicchetti displays "research on the determinants of resilience in maltreated children is
presented as an illustration of empirical work that is moving from single–level to multilevel investigations of competent functioning in the face of
adversity and trauma".
For many different intellectuals in this article feel as though "all our talk about noncognitive skills, nobody has yet found a reliable way to teach kids
to be grittier or more resilient" (3). As a result, Paul Tough does not build a logical argument because nobody can determine how a person obtains
grittiness.
Due to this topic being so broad, there is no definite answer to how an individual can truly learn resilience. Also, in the article How Kids Learn
Resilience Paul Tough emphasizes the point that non–cognitive traits like grit, self–regulation, optimism, and resilience simply cannot be taught. In this
case, I agree but on the other hand, she reveals that it is being built through student–centered environments, which include both a sense of belonging and

'The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants'
The Right Attitude
There is a quote from the book The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares that the character Coach Brevin says "The problem is not the
problem, the problem is your attitude about the problem, got that?" (Brashares 11). This quote, I found , has always helped me when I am facing any
complicated problems in both my college life and my personal life. An example of the meaning of this quote is found in Grant Berry's A Change of
Attitude (Berry 63–73). The problem, as implied by Grant Berry, is that many of us have the attitude that we are required to make drastic sacrifices
that we don't want to make in order to achieve our goals. I don't believe that Grant Berry's conclusion be true, although his story is an excellent example
of perseverance. In contrast with the right attitude we can stay motivated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A way that I find a balance between my college life and my personal life is to have a day planner , a schedule, or a to–do list, that way I know what
has to be done first and what can wait to be done. When planning my life I know when I have the free time to do what I want. For instance, in Grant
Berry's A Change of Attitude, Grant did not find a good balance between his school work and his personal life. He was consumed by his school
work, there was no extra time to spend with his family. Grant believed that the sacrifice was necessary to succeed in college, even though he didn't
like making those sacrifices. I don't believe that to be true, some of the sacrifices that Grant made could have been avoided. Having a good day
planner or a to do list could have helped Grant find the extra time to spend with his family. For that reason, having the right attitude and knowing what
is important to us and balancing that in our life can be hard, but if done the right way we can achieve our

Essay On Friendship In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
Khalil Gibran, a Lebanese writer, poet and a visual artist once said, "Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, never an opportunity," which
proves true in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. In Of Mice and Men, two migrant workers named George Milton and Lennie Small
find work on a farm in Salinas, California. George and Lennie are very good friends and traveled together, which was very unusual for migrant
workers to do, especially since Lennie is mentally challenged. They have a dream that one day they will be able to buy their own little house, "an'
live off the fatta the lan'," (Steinbeck 14) which was a typical American Dream. They come upon many struggles at the farm which they are
working, resulting in George having to kill Lennie to prevent other men from killing him in a vicious way. Crooks is the stable buck at the farm
but is discriminated against because he is black. He sits lonely in his room in the farm, away from the bunkhouse where the other men live. Crooks
shows how lack of friends creates loneliness because everyone needs a friend with whom to talk about life and the American Dream depends upon
the time and place in which one lives. Crooks keeps to himself spending most of his spare time reading books in his room and he rarely talks to others.

Persuasive Essay On Sports Injuries
Athletes should be playing a sport for the love of that sport not because they are trying to hurt people while trying to be the best. Some people think
that most injuries are just freak accidents that can't be avoided. Injuries in sports is a big deal because it can cause permanent damage to someone
else or even yourself ending one's career, and could cause people to go to therapy for what they have done to someone. Having the proper gear and
teams with good sportsmanship and without revenge can all be factors to decrease injuries.

Compare Arabic Poetry And American Poetry
The topic I chose for my unit project is to compare Arabic poetry and American poetry. I have picked a poem from each as a representative. While this
may not be the best representation of either society's poems, they are two incredible poems that are famous in their respective cultures. The poem I
have chosen to represent American poetry is "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost. The poem I have chosen to represent Arabic
culture is "On Pain" by Khalil Gibran. This essay will examine both poems main idea, form and themes.
"On Pain" has some very dark themes. It talks about life's suffering and pain; telling us how much of it is brought upon by one's own self. The first
line in the poem says "Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding." This is telling the reader that the pain of life
destroys the world we have built up in our heads which we call reality. In the next two verses, the author explains to us that if we could only "keep
your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life" then we could find balance in our lives between the pain and joy. If we could only revel in
the joy of life as must as we did the sorrows of life then the sorrows would be much more bearable. That is the main message in the poem. It makes
a lot of sense that this poem is dark because of the history of the Middle East. The middle east has a dark and violent history so it's no wonder that
their literature is dark. This particular poem also has a

The Madman Ethos
There are many steps in order to live authentically, which leads to living a good life. For example, when staying authentic to ourselves, we're
helping others. Living authentically also includes doing what we love and not lying to ourselves. Doing these things help us live good lives and
be ourselves. The novel, The Fall by Albert Camus, shows the opposite of living authentically. The video, Honest Liars from TEDx, talks about
how often, we don't live authentically. Another video, How to Find a Job you Love, is how we all choose jobs for money, not enjoyment. Lastly,
the poem, The Madman by Khalil Gibran, shows how often we lie to ourselves. When we live an authentic life, we stay true to ourselves and others.
In, The Fall, the main character had always played a character. The character admits that he is double faced to the public and himself, resulting in
him fearing judgement. "After playing my part, I would take the bow." Him fearing judgement caused him to be fake. The Madman is the same way
with the narrator, owning masks to hide himself. Once these masks are stolen, he is seen as mad for becoming his true self. He feels free, free to be
himself. "And I have found both freedom and safety in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

who you are." In, The Fall, the main character loved his job, but for the wrong reasons. Although it was mostly for fame, he did it so he could get
something out of it. "But, seen from the outside, it looked rather like a passion." He did it for the opposite reasons that most people would. When we
choose what to do with the rest of our lives, we should most likely choose something we would genuinely enjoy, not to get something out of

Gibran Khalil Gibran
The raw power of nature has always been an inspiration to the world around us. Gibran Khalil Gibran has depicted the power of nature and applied it
in his theories in philosophy, his painting, and his passion for poetry and literature. The style in which Khalil unifies life and its beauty makes his
writing very good. His style of writing is very peaceful and ear– friendly. A factor of his sacristy to women, life and beauty is the locations he has been
to in his life. Throughout this essay, the exploration of the poetic visions and biography of Gibran will be explored.

In " The Prophet" Khalil says " sorrow carves out our being" but actually, the emptiness that sorrow makes, provides room for you to enjoy yourself
in another moment in life. In one of lines that standout in "Sorrow and Pain" Khalil states, "Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your
understanding" when you are in pain, try to consider your pain as any experience of life. If you can accomplish this, you will be more calm and
satisfied about your feelings. Few realize that the prophet says, that suffering is meant to heal our selves " The bitter potion by which the physician
within you heals your sick self". Therefore the next time you are in sorrow, consider that it may all have been self–chosen, all has been produces by
you. Without struggles we would not learn anything. In "The Prophet" chapter "Prayer" Khalil describes God as an art, the art of life " Our God, who
art our winged –and giving us more of thyself thou givest us all". Throughout this quote, Khalil is stating that God is art, and whenever people pray,
they pray for better art, which is wrong because you should ask for more of God in order to gifted more and better art. The main idea in this quote
is that God knows everything his people need, and it his himself. Our essential need is God, therefore praying should only be for more of God.

"rules" that the society that they had been forgotten by to further advance themselves at a cost to others, and it eventually became a part of their
life, like a game to them. We get early implications of what is to come when they abandon the smoke fire (Jack and his group) and go to hunt pigs
and when Ralph asks them why they left their post, they instead give him a play by play on how they almost killed a pig. The key word there is
"almost". They could have killed the pig, but they didn't realize they had it in them until they replayed the situation in their head. Once they tasted
blood at first, they couldn't stop. The power their ability to hold the life of another creature in their hand eventually consumed them, and led to one
too many people dying. Jack believed that "you are good when you walk to your goal firmly and with bold steps.", except his goal was all consuming
power and anyone who stood in his way wouldn't stand a chance. So, does that make him good?

Poem Rhetorical Analysis
"
The optimist sees the rose and not its thornsНѕ the pessimist stares at the thorns, oblivious of the rose", said Kahil Gibran, a Lebanese artist, poet, and
writer. In other words, optimists see the more favorable side of the flower, the beauty of the rose, while pessimists focus on the negative parts,
blinding their view of the beauty. Ha Jin's poem relates to this because he illustrates the change from a pessimist to an optimist. In his poem "Ways of

the stanza.
Continuing to look at the list, he refers to these losses as things in which "descended without warning". Then in the third stanza, where he illuminates
the allure of letting go of negativity, he uses things again to say that "Things become beautiful." Many might read through this poem and not at all
think anything of the word "things" placed in two different stanzas, but they are truly significant in Jin's writing. They stand for the same thing. In both
uses, things stand for the loves lost and the marriages broken and the friends estranged. At first these things snuck up, without precaution, then they

Why Is Kahlil Gibran Essay
Kahlil Gibran was born in Lebanon which subjugated to Ottoman dominion. The people of Mount Lebanon had struggled to gain independence from
the Ottoman rule. The Mount Lebanon area was a troubled region, due to foreign interferences. Since childhood he enjoyed solitude in the natural
surroundings of the cascading falls and the rugged cliffs, this had symbolic influence to his paintings and writings. Due to his poverty, he did not
receive any formal education or schooling, only regular visits to a village priest and learnt the essentials of religion and the Bible, and Arabic languages.

What Challenges Did Rosa Parks Face

The Truths Of Slavery By Gary Paulsen

Essay On Kurt Vonnegut

  • 1. Essay On Kurt Vonnegut One of the many advantages of written language is the ability to pass down important knowledge to younger generations for as long as the text exists. Some of these writings were meant to pass along examples of how to live one's life and attempt to answer the unanswerable through moral or character instruction. Fiction literature, however, is superior at delivering these lessons because fiction allows for far more creative freedom for the author to craft their lesson. By its very nature as moral guidance, this type of writing often appears within a religious context. Khalil Gibran's 1923 masterpiece The Prophet is a collection of twenty–six short sermons delivered by the prophet Almustafa to the people of Orphalese before his departure home. The lack of a concrete storyline makes the entire novel a soapbox for Gibran to stand on and preach his wisdom. In fact, the absence of the Prophet's name from anywhere in the book, except for the beginning, helps to blend the identities of Almustafa, the narrator, and Gibran. Blurred lines between the three figures makes one believe that Gibran himself is standing among the people of Orphalese, or rather he is the god who is speaking through Almustafa. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vonnegut still uses religion as a major aspect, however he focuses on the absurdity of religion using Bokononism, a religion created and persecuted on a whim by two men. The narrator even admits that his religion is only "the bittersweet lies of Bokonon" (Vonnegut 11). One of the over–arching themes of the story, partly inspired by the narrators Bokononist ideology, is that no matter one's actions or character, the world is essentially pre–determined and could end any minute. Obviously, Vonnegut isn't a true believer in Bokononism, rather he's a product of his time, which was filled with uncertainty for the future because of the Cold ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. How Does Mass Incarceration Affects Society? The 36th annual Marion Wright Thompson Lecture Series on mass incarceration was great. I chose to attend this lecture because mass incarceration and experiences of it throughout history are important to me. In the Intro to Women's & Gender Studies class that I previously took in the fall semester of 2015, I studied the relationship between mass incarceration and race for a bit. That inspired me to attend the Marion Wright Thompson Lecture. I had knowledge prior to the lecture, so I wanted to further understand how deeply mass incarceration affects society as a whole. I was not surprised when the speaker, Khalil Gibran Muhammad, immediately mentioned racism. I am heavily aware of how race and mass incarceration intersect. Institutionalized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He effectively delivered evidence of injustice against the black community, especially with the more familiar names/cases that are more recent. Not only does Muhammad understand that there is a problem with racism being linked to mass incarceration, but he acknowledges the fact that this will not change without the effort to do so. I completely agree with Khalil Muhammad. I truly believe that as a whole, society will fail to make progress without fully recognizing the imbalance of political and social power. If America specifically tried to undo its wrongdoings, one of the best ways to do so would be by teaching the history of it. By having this knowledge passed onto both the younger and older generations, I believe that we can definitely see an improvement in how society functions. Rather than constantly facing inequality, we as a society may find more opportunities to build for a better future, rather than regressing. I would definitely recommend this lecture to everyone to raise more awareness of what is really going on in our criminal justice system, and how race and class share such a close relationship with each other in regards to mass ... • 3. Compare And Contrast On Good And Evil In the world today, there have been many tragic occurrences that can be seen as evil, for example the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. On Wednesday February 14, 2018 Nikolas Cruz was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. Cruz, a former student of Stoneman Douglas, opened fire killing 17 and wounded many others. When looking at the situation, Many people argue about Cruz's motive. Authors like William Golding, would argue that Nikolas Cruz is a innately evil person, his true purpose was to hurt the kids. Whereas authors like, Gibran would argue that we, the people, failed Nikolas because all the signs showed that he wasn't mentally stable, but no one acted on reflecting that it was our faults. Both of these authors, have strong views of what is good and evil, which are reflected through their writings. In Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, and "On Good and Evil", written by Kahlil Gibran, the two authors come up with their own depictions of good and evil. Through Golding's writing, he describes the evil within each person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gibran uses repetition of "you are good" which directly relates with the readers implying that there is goodness within each of us. Throughout the poem there are several different examples, such as "You are good in countless ways," and "You are good when you strive to give of yourself." (Gibran#) Both these examples make it seems as if he is talking directly with the readers taking it to a personal level to get his point across that there is goodness within everyone. Along with good there is bound to evil, but instead Gibran sees it differently. He sees evil as a effect of trying to do good. In one of the first line of the poems Gibran says, "For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst? Verily when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark caves, and when it thirsts it drinks even of dead waters." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I strongly believe that everything unique about America will leave a very special gift in everyone's heart's. Just like The gifts of Freedom, Pride and Justice, the ones you can never leave behind. It's extremely significant to note that America has been so offering to us. Not only it has given us many chances, gifts and offers but the thought of making our lives seem so valuable. as khalil Gibran once mentioned that life without liberty is like a body without a spirit. • 5. The Journey Of Ibn Fattouma By Naguib Gibran's On Crime... Culture is a shared set of beliefs, values, goals, and attitudes within a social, racial, or religious group. Someone's culture is easily shown, even if in only in the slightest ways. The things people say, their specific beliefs, or the choices they make can give a deep insight into someone's culture. I feel that culture, in one way or another, is clearly presented in "On Crime and Punishment" by Khalil Gibran as well as "The Journey of Ibn Fattouma", by Naguib Mahfouz. "On Crime and Punishment" by Khalil Gibran discusses how crimes are committed, but there is almost always more to the story. Even though this is Arabic literature, I feel that this applies to many cultures. In most cultures, including mine, we are very quick to point the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the way, he meets an old man who is supposed to help him get to the land of Gebel, but first he must join the other followers to prepare for the journey. It also shows an insight into how the culture teaches people to respect their elders. The people are following and listening to the old man because he is old and considered wiser than everyone else. This is a common belief among many cultures. In the end of the text, I think it also shows how people can choose to break away from their culture. It may be that it no longer benefits them or they are just tired of conforming to that culture's standards. Specifically referring to the text, the group leaves to go to the land of Gebel even though they are not fully prepared for the journey. Due to certain circumstances, they are told to leave their land. However, they made that final choice to leave, even though the old man said they were not yet ready. • 6. Graduation Speech Essay The old poet Kahlil Gibran, a long time ago, once said, "You work that you may keep pace with the soul of the earth. For to be idle is to become a stranger unto the seasons, and to step out of life's procession, that marches in majesty and proud submission toward the infinite." An interesting thought, that we work in order to keep pace with the earth. Now, I'm sure you're asking yourself, how can my near minimum wage job, where the customers treat me like a doormat and I still have to be pleasant and chipper, keep me in sync with the soul of the earth. Well I imagine there are higher rewards to part–time high school jobs, but other than the always too small pay checks, I am hard pressed to fathom them. Yet, that is not the kind of work I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of my favorite examples of outstanding volunteer work is the Universal Access Parks Project, in which a group of students along with several teachers planned, attained funding for, and ultimately built a handicap accessible park behind the Lynnwood Pool. The park serves as a lasting testimony of our hard work and dedication for years to come. Now, not all of us can be a class, club or A.S.B. president and not all of us can volunteer weekly for a worthy cause or organization, we cannot do everything even though we may try. But all of us can, and most of us have served an instrumental role in an important project or activity. There are so many different aspects of service work and ways of being involved that to name a few is only grazing the surface. Whether your focus was being in a school club or student government, working with poor children, or people dying of AIDS, or if it was working for environmental justice or animal rights, if you have done it, it is important. There must be reasons we give up our time and energy, other than to have a fancy looking resume, or it would not be worth our precious time. So why do we do it? Often I ask myself, as you do I'm sure, this question of why. It seems to surface more frequently when it is your fifth meeting of the week and it's only Wednesday, or when you are at school so much you could easily set up a cot and never go home–– do we all remember homecoming week, or ... Examples Of Faith In Night By Elie Wiesel "Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother."–Khalil Gibran Doubt is lonely and painful and faith gives hope and prosperity to keep on going even in the roughest times. Night by Elie Wiesel in this novel Elie grows up in a small town called Sighet. When the Germans come to his house and take his family to a concentration camp where his mother and sister died. They continue to work at camps for a year until the resistance saves them and he was free once again. Elie is saying how simple man are to comprehend God's ways but "Where is God's mercy?"(Wiesel 77) why would God just listen to his people scream in pain and agony. Was there no sympathy for the Jews or maybe god was angry with the Jews but, for whatever reason the burning and gassing of Jews should have made him help but sadly he did not. For this particular reason alone is why Elie no longer had faith or hope in his God for every man, woman, child that died God merely stood aside and watched. This was why Elie no longer would pray to the God who would watch as his people needed him in their time of need. "Some of the men spoke of God: His mysterious ways, the sins of the Jewish people, and the redemption to come. As for me, I had ceased to pray. I concurred with Job! I was not denying His existence, but I doubted His absolute justice."(Wiesel 45) other Jews thought only that they have caused sins to make it seem as is God is punishing them for their sins. • 9. Jesus Shaves By David Sedaris The Truth Is an Illusion and the Illusion is a Truth "Faith is a knowledge within the heart, beyond the reach of proof." Khalil Gibran. Since long time ago, people believe in a certain doctrine that distinguish them from others. Practicing specific rituals aiming to achieve the salvation and get rid of the passion of the mundane. Consequently, many beliefs and religions appeared in all parts of the ground. Simultaneously, these thoughts were taboo and many conflicts provoked among people either to proof that a one thought is the most right or a certain folk imposes its thought over another for political purposes. According to "Jesus shaves" by David Sedaris, I think he tried to convey a certain message that it is hard for a certain individual to explain profoundly why he/she believes in a certain thought due to several reasons; the different languages... He did not find the right words to express his idea. In addition to the obstacle of different languages, in my opinion, the lack of basic information about the Easter was obvious. For example, the students started and continued the explanation of the Easter without mentioning the resurrection, crucifixion or at least saying the death and the rise of Jesus is a pivotal pillar in a Christianity doctrine and due to this event Christians celebrate the Easter. However, his fame and influence was not limited to the Near East only, but far beyond these borders. His poetry has been translated into more than twenty languages. His drawings and paintings have been exhibited in the great capitals of the world and compared by Auguste Rodin to the work of William Blake. Thus it was quite painful for him to think of leaving Oorphalese, however he had to go to his homeland in any circumstances. When it was time for him to leave the people of Orpahalese asked him to stay, but he couldnГїt stop. Then a wise woman called Altmira, came up with a solution. • 12. What Is Good And Evil In The Prophet Some people believe that poetry is written only by mournful men and women with hate filled and evil behaviors. Khalil Gibran shows us that many other uses of poetry can be used to express ideas on a widely debated topic on good and evil. In William Golding's, Lord of the Flies, and Khalil Gibran, The Prophet, their extremely different views of good and evil are apparent. Golding proclaims that evil is in everyone, and that they are born with it from the beginning. On the other hand, Gibran suggests that everyone is inherently good and born pure, and evil is just being lost or uninspired. First, Golding seems to imply that when the group of boys are evil to begin with. For instance they abandon their civilized ways, they start acting according ... Gibran writes "For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst?"(2) Gibran challenges and raises a new question of whether evil is actually the goodness in you but in a different form. The author of the poem also states that everyone is inherently good from the beginning, and that we should be compassionate to those who are selfish and cruel, for they suffer from greater poverty than the homeless. The author shows us that maybe that good "in others it is a flat stream that loses itself in angles and bends and lingers before it reaches the shore."(). This helps people realize not judge when one does what may appear to be "wrong" or "evil", it's just that you're divided and living in your blind world and can't see clear, and not to judge someone too soon.On the other hand, Golding views human nature completely opposite, since the desire to kill and hunt is in all of us rooted in our genome. "Maybe [...] there is a beast [...]What I mean is... maybe it's only us." (90–91). There is a large difference between Gibran's view on evil and Golding's view on evil. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child." Carl Jung Strolling down memory lane, back to school experiences as a child, many different memories come flooding back; some positive ones, and some not as enjoyable. School is an environment that has great powers. It has the power to influence and shape us, no matter what grade level. Teachers need to realize the great responsibility they carry, for without them even knowing, they can make everlasting marks and impressions on their students, both positively and negatively, forever. Firstly, which I find very important, my teachers used songs with whatever they were teaching. "Music is the language of the soul" is not a famous saying for nothing. It is hard to believe that I knew of Black Lives Matter (BLM), however, I never actually bother to learn what it is–I knew a succinct premise of what the movement is about, but never cared to inquire further on the subject. Nevertheless, attending events like the Brandeis' Black Lives Matter's Symposium allowed me to inform myself on different angles about the movement and understand it through a brief historical context and through different mediums and points of view. And, as a matter of fact, I believe it is one of the common routes in which movements often times go through, that of focusing particularly in one identity, which may affect them, but it may also affect other people with other identities or an intersection of several identities, an example of what we have seen in class is the Women's Rights movement, which at the beginning of its second wave it focused on white women and it marginalized women of color, such as black and Chicana ... Throughout the book, there is a significant connection with winter and the main character, Lia. Winter in the book is a symbol of how she is broken and physically sick from her disorder anorexia. When Lia goes to the same motel her best friend, Cassie died in, she struggles to become stable with her disorder and considers extreme choices that affect her later in the book. Lia says,"If I really want to die, right now....I could walk into the blizzard and lie down in the snow and bleed out. Hypothermia and blood loss is like going to sleep"(265). Lia is going through an ongoing battle with herself that makes her view on life careless. Anderson uses specific words like "hypothermia", "blizzard" and "snow" to emphasize the symbolism of winter in the main character's life throughout the book. The snow being frozen and penetrating explains one of the symptoms of anorexia, which is feeling cold. In addition to this, Lia's mentions of topics relating to winter is her way of expressing how she is in a frozen state of being dead and alive, all from her disorder. However, at the end of the book, Lia has overcome this past, saying, "I am thawing"(Anderson, 278). • 21. Analysis Of Defeat By Kahlil Gibran Poet Kahlil Gibran, in his poem Defeat, portrays defeat as something that can affect a person positively. Taking an unusual stance towards defeat, Gibran's purpose is to change his audience's perspective about what failure actually means. Throughout the poem, Gibran goes through a variety of moods, exemplifying the emotional process that people generally go through when faced with defeat. In each stanza, the poet holds a different point of view towards defeat by adopting a sarcastic tone in the beginning, only to switch it later on to a confident and resilient one; this better portrays the idea that defeat does not have to be tied to negative connotations. Through Gibran's use of personification, paradox, and the ongoing metaphor to the 5 stages of grief, the author is able to convey the idea that he speaks from experience and that defeat can be empowering and something to learn from. At the beginning of the poem, the author personifies defeat and experiences the first two stages of grief to show the audience his own internal struggle with defeat. Gibran does this to convince his audience that, although it is difficult to see, defeat is a very valuable experience. The beginning of each stanza starts with "Defeat, my Defeat," creating a beginning syntax similar to that of a letter. Likewise, Khalil Gibran's poem GOOD and EVIL puts forth a very similar message, of the power struggle between GOOD and EVIL within ourselves. Evil, naturally, is the easy way out and the more tempting of the 2 powers. But, the human race has evolved over thousands of years to become tenacious, to fight for survival, to be a metaphorical light in a dark, unpropitious situation. Both works ask: what are the limits of the human spirit and how do we fight EVIL within? Similarly, in the book Lord of the Flies, EVIL is presented as being innate and unwanted, even though it can be used to motivate and aid in critical situations. When the boys first discovered they were marooned on the island, the little devil on their shoulder (representing the EVIL within the human spirit) whispered in their ear, 'you are the strongest one, and better off without them. If you don't eliminate them, you will die on this island'. Ultimately, it would be a bloodbath. First, a power struggle between the groups, then within the groups. Essay On Friendship In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men Khalil Gibran, a Lebanese writer, poet and a visual artist once said, "Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, never an opportunity," which proves true in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. In Of Mice and Men, two migrant workers named George Milton and Lennie Small find work on a farm in Salinas, California. George and Lennie are very good friends and traveled together, which was very unusual for migrant workers to do, especially since Lennie is mentally challenged. They have a dream that one day they will be able to buy their own little house, "an' live off the fatta the lan'," (Steinbeck 14) which was a typical American Dream. They come upon many struggles at the farm which they are working, resulting in George having to kill Lennie to prevent other men from killing him in a vicious way. Crooks is the stable buck at the farm but is discriminated against because he is black. He sits lonely in his room in the farm, away from the bunkhouse where the other men live. • 28. Compare Arabic Poetry And American Poetry The topic I chose for my unit project is to compare Arabic poetry and American poetry. I have picked a poem from each as a representative. While this may not be the best representation of either society's poems, they are two incredible poems that are famous in their respective cultures. The poem I have chosen to represent American poetry is "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost. The poem I have chosen to represent Arabic culture is "On Pain" by Khalil Gibran. This essay will examine both poems main idea, form and themes. "On Pain" has some very dark themes. It talks about life's suffering and pain; telling us how much of it is brought upon by one's own self. The first line in the poem says "Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding." This is telling the reader that the pain of life destroys the world we have built up in our heads which we call reality. In the next two verses, the author explains to us that if we could only "keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life" then we could find balance in our lives between the pain and joy. If we could only revel in the joy of life as must as we did the sorrows of life then the sorrows would be much more bearable. That is the main message in the poem. It makes a lot of sense that this poem is dark because of the history of the Middle East. The middle east has a dark and violent history so it's no wonder that their literature is dark. Living authentically also includes doing what we love and not lying to ourselves. Doing these things help us live good lives and be ourselves. The novel, The Fall by Albert Camus, shows the opposite of living authentically. The video, Honest Liars from TEDx, talks about how often, we don't live authentically. The two previous quotes bring light to Slaughterhouse–Five and"Nick of Time"'s drastically different views on the time vs free will debate, with Slaughterhouse–Five being on the side of time controlling everything and "Nick of Time" believing in free ...
