The And I Do Not Bode Well Together
Kayaking and I do not bode well together. I despise the icy water that leaks into the tiny boat along
with everything else involved in this activity. Relentlessly trying to remain in my kayak as the
freezing cold water sprays my face no matter which way I turn, I watch my fellow grade 8 friends as
they too struggle to stay inside. After hopping into the wobbly kayak, burning cold water already
spritzing my face, I could tell the next 45 minutes would be absolutely dreadful. Paddling around the
same section of lake, my hands are fully numbed by the cold and I am bored to bits. Eagerly waiting
for the camp instructor to whistle us back to shore, I give up on paddling all together and bob along
the water.
This past week has undeniably been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Racing into the polar water, they dunk their entire bodies before sprinting back to the beach,
screaming like little girls. However funny it may be watching the boys squeal like babies, I begin
mentally preparing myself for the torture that awaits me. I can't possibly be the only one who doesn't
play along – I don't want to be that wussy girl. Following suit, a few girls run in and out, shrieking
and laughing as they bolt towards the sauna. Finally, the instructor himself rushes past me at top
speed for the water and douses himself. Laughing all alone, I realize I am the last man standing.
Sporting my big rubber boots, jeans, 2 sweaters and raincoat, I gather one last deep breath before I
sprint at full force towards the freezing body of water.
Crashing into the shallow waters, screaming as the cold hits and stings my entire body, I immerse
myself in the lake. I must admit, this feels awfully wild and thrilling! Once I am fully drenched in
ice water, I try making my way back to shore, however, water fills my boots and slows me down.
There is so much water inside my boots that the cold is getting the best of me so I lunge towards
land, losing a shoe in the process. Great, I think. Now I have to get back into the lake of death to
find my damn boot. Dreading the idea of going back into the water, I gather my brave and run back
in to retrieve my boot. Feeling around, my foot feels the boot

Personal Narrative Essay : My Memorable Drowning Moment
My Memorable Drowning Moment When we hear, "Mind–stability, body and character," we think
of the freshmen in high school, who also love swimming. In addition, most of us have a memory
from our childhood about a time we were almost drowned in trying to swim in deep water, and I am
no exception. I struggled to swim in the deep water that compressed my body like the weight of the
galaxy was on my shoulders. When life was in danger, I hung in there, and I did not back down, and
I did not give up my life. So, the moment etched in my head that being rescued by your companion
is possible. I learn that obstacles can be overcome, fears can be strengths, and sometimes an
accident becomes an opportunity.
In the summer 1963, I often visited a swimming pool in my town, where I loved to hang around
with my friends in the weekend. I was a fourteen–years–old boy, and Joan was my girl companion. I
would stare secretly at Joan, standing as a dolphin in the pool of rigging–water theme park. Then,
Joan was diving from its springboard and butterflying her laps on the tracks, and she made the blue
water splashing over us. You might think that I was so beguiled by her sensual beauty that I would
jump into the cool pool. But, sadly, I was convinced that the water would choke my throat, and I
might die under water, so I had deep–water phobia.
Admiring her esteemed appearance, I eyed secretly Joan with a mixture of delight and awe, as I
disclosed my best prospect of celebrity. "If you want my

Characteristics Of Erges And Escher
Part III. Modernism, Postmodernism and Escher:
Relate Escher's lithographs Magic Mirror, Print Gallery, Waterfall and Relativity to Borges and
Kafka's work. What aspects and/or themes of their work could these prints illustrate? What
Modernist and Postmodernist characteristics do you find in them?
Mauritius Cornelis (M.C.) Escher was a Dutch artist that focused on drawing and printmaking. In
correlation with Escher's work, the themes of his pieces often centered the impossible. These
creative ideas present Modernist and Postmodernist characteristics, as they draw on the
subconscious and fragmentary nature of human life. In the lithograph Magic Mirror, there is a large
emphasis placed on the fictional winged–lion, while Print Gallery ... Show more content on

In this work, Marquez focuses on corruption as Senator Onesimo Sanchez accepts pay offs from his
people. As specified by the text, "In this story he is clearly a corrupt politician who accepts bribes
and stays in power by helping the local property owners avoid reform" (2053). Accordingly, in the
text, Sanchez speaks at a rally and knowingly presents promises that he does not intend to keep. In
the text, it states,"We will no longer be foundlings in our own country, orphans of God in a realm of
thirst and bad climate, exiles in our own land. We will be different people, ladies and gentlemen, we
will be a great and happy people," (2056). This quote emphasizes that Sanchez deceives his people
in order to stay in power. Additionally, Sanchez encounters Nelson Farina, who is an escaped
convict that continuously begs him for a false–identification card. Thus, Farina sends his daughter,
Laura, to seduce Sanchez into providing him with an ID. However, Laura is wearing a chastity–belt
that her father uses to persuade Sanchez into delivering his request. Ultimately, these ideas relate to
the theme of corruption as Sanchez relays and performs deals based on his own satisfaction. Another
theme within the story is loneliness. This theme is prominent in the work, because Sanchez suffers
alone due to his underlying alienation. Sanchez is a husband and a father, yet he never tells any of
them that he has six months and eleven days to live.

Summary Of A Love Song By Prufrock
By calling this poem a "love song", Eliot creates a sense of irony. When hearing the words love
song, most people imagine beautiful imagery and breathtaking metaphors. Eliot's word choice
despites a world of uncertainty, insecurity, and loneliness. "When the evening is spread out against
the sky. Like a patient etherized upon a table." A patient who is "etherized" is completely vulnerable.
One can't move or speak or protest. They are naked and scared. Their lives are completely in
another's hands. Love makes Prufrock feel this exact way. He is confused and scared. He has no
control over how others feel about him. He feels if he risks loving someone, he will be "etherized"
in his own way. He will be lying on the table hoping the other person is willing to take his life in
their hands. This is something he is unsure he even wants. Prufrock is so crippled by his own
insecurity that he isn't willing to put himself out there. He even questions his own intent when he
states,"To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?" The decision to use the word dare makes readers
question why is love such a risk for him? Readers understand that he is self–conscious when he
explains, "They will say: "How his hair is growing thin." He is worried that the women will just
laugh at his insecurities.
Eliot uses "the yellow fog" as a metaphor for the way love makes him feel. Due to the recent events
of the Industrial era, smog had become part of everyone's daily lives. This yellow fog was
everywhere.

The Mermaid : A Short Story : Treacherous Waves
Treacherous Waves There they were having the times of their life driving around the island
swimming at any possible beach they passed by. At the time, there were two vans driving to Waimea
coming from the mermaid caves. The boys had a van of their own as well as the girls. The sound of
their laughter could fill up the streets of New York City. Everyone enjoyed themselves as they rode
around the roads of North Shore feeling the pulse of the music in their bodies as they sang to the top
of their lungs. Everything was perfect, at the time their only problem was who was going to play the
music. "Come on already, just pick a song!" Olivia said. "This is taking way too long." complained
Lily. "Okay!!!" Loren replied. "Just wait." Just as the two vans arrived to the destination. The sound
of the waves crashing to the shore made them anxious. They were all at awe by the huge waves
rising three feet above the people on the bay. As soon as the vans came to a stop they immediately
got out, took their bags, and ran to the sand. Everyone was in a happy mood. The sun shining above
their heads, sand beneath their feet, and the sound of the waves gave them life. They all stacked their
bags one on top the other and ran to the shore. They were just standing there, looking at the waves,
soaking in the beautiful scenery. As time went by Olivia and Lily began to play volleyball while
waiting for the others to swim. After a while more and more people joined in a circle hitting the ball

The Hilarious Entertainment Of Max And Uncle John Putting...
The hilarious entertainment of Max and Uncle John putting together the Doughboy swimming pool
a distant memory, they now felt like they were the envy of the neighborhood to get such a luxury
item. Not being tall enough to touch the bottom of the pool, Sam, Susan, and Beth each had to wear
a bright orange life jacket which kept them afloat, but prevented them from learning how to swim
before going on the family vacation to Camp Livingstone. The fact that Susan did not know how to
swim would be the prelude to one of the most embarrassing and traumatizing events in her life.
~
Now that is music to my ears, embarrassing and traumatizing.
~
Camp Livingstone, an amazing family campground, was packed with fun–filled activities from
sunup till sundown. There was something for everyone: swimming, canoeing, water bicycles, arts
and crafts, and nightly canteen parties for the teenagers. One of the family rules while vacationing at
Camp Livingstone was to be paired off in groups of two or more at all times. No one was ever
allowed to wander off alone.
On the first day of their weeklong stay, Millie and Susan were paired off. They walked from their
tent to the lake, about the distance of two football fields. The event's coordinator announced a
swimming contest would begin on the shoreline and end at the square platform 100 yards away.
Millie pressured Susan, "Come on, Sue. Let's do the race."
"Millie, I'm not a good swimmer. I've only gone without a life jacket a couple of times."

The Importance Of Becoming A Lifeguard
As you watch your TV show or a movie you might see a lifeguard and wonder, "How do I become a
lifeguard?" Though it isn't as glamorous as Hollywood portrays, becoming a lifeguard is a great
experience. Becoming a lifeguard does, however, require some physically demanding training and
social skills. With the proper training, you can also be the lifeguard at your local pool. To begin the
path to become a lifeguard, you must first find when your local pool is taking applications. Being
observant is the key here to find the listing in your local newspaper. Your school also may announce
the applications are being taken at the time. Before you apply, you must first question yourself if
you are a good applicant to become a lifeguard. If you do not consider yourself a strong swimmer,
or consider yourself shy and afraid to speak to strangers, you are not a good fit for this job.
Generally to be hired as a lifeguard you will need to submit a resume and have an interview. At an
interview you should present yourself professionally and prove to the employer why you are the best
candidate for the job. Once hired, all lifeguards must attend training courses before they can get on
the stand. Training courses can be hosted by the pool you are employed at, or occasionally new
trainees must travel to attend their required courses. Lifeguards are trained to respond specifically to
the situation. There are three ways a lifeguard can enter the pool to save a victim, as well as different

Persuasive Speech On How To Being A Lifeguard
Growing up spending summers at the pool lounging around and having lifeguards watch you, and
then one day it is finally your turn to get a job and be the teenager who sits on the tall metal stands
watching families lounge around. Being a teenager you are excited to spend the summer getting tan
and making money. One must look around and find that the YMCA is hiring summer guards and at
$7.25 an hour how can you beat that? Im going to explain to you how to reach the goal of becoming
a lifeguard.
First before applying for your dream job one must take a lifeguarding course. Its three– weeks long
and cost about 200 dollars. During this class you learn to spot potential victims and accidents. Also
to handle pool members who are breaking the rules ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the skills you learned with these trainings are saving a victim from drowning, how to
approach a person who is choking and use the Heimlich maneuver, on them and how to restart a
person's heart, either using the AED or chest compressions. So now that you are lifeguard certified,
you can watch over the pool and keep the waters safe and also save someone's life. With your First
aid training, you learn to deal with things outside as the pool, such as someone in shock, deep cuts,
and cleaning up bodily fluids. For example if someone falls back and their blood is on the deck you
know the first step is to clear scene, then put on your gloves while avoiding the blood and care for
the pool goer and then finally clean up the blood and make it a clean environment once again. Still
the most important part of being a lifeguard is knowing you can save someone's life. This is why the
lifeguard course is 3 weeks long because once you become a lifeguard your job is keeping people
safe and you must know how to do that without a hesitation. That also explains all the tests you must
pass in order to complete the class including book tests and water tests. Once you pass all these you
will do a practical guard where you will guard with an experienced guard for 3 hours so they can
show you the ropes and make you feel more confident as a new guard. After the

Fate in Miles City, Montana by Alice Munro Essay
Fate in Miles City, Montana by Alice Munro
In life no one knows their actual fate and the story "Miles City, Montana" gives a true picture of just
that. In this story, we see two different times and events that take place. The first event is the death
of a childhood friend and the second is an almost unexpected tragedy that makes a woman think
back to the childhood catastrophe. Munro uses mostly dialog to help give the reader a description of
the theme in her story. In "Miles City, Montana," Alice Munro discusses some realities of life: how
drastically things can change, and how quickly and unexpectedly death can come. At the beginning
of the story, the narrator starts by remembering a childhood calamity. Her young playmate ... Show

The narrator states that maybe there would be a pool in the next town. There was a pool, but with
the turn of events, maybe the fact was not so fortunate. First of all the pool was closed, but because
her children were so hot and tired of sitting in the car the narrator begged the lifeguard to allow her
children to swim. After the lifeguard consented, she dressed her children in swimming suits and then
went to find a drink for herself. When she felt a mother's intuition for her children she ran back to
the pool and at first did not see her youngest daughter. Her daughter had fallen into the deep end of
the pool. Although the little girl did not drown, the mother was still shaken. At this point, the
narrator finally discovers what the realities of life are. She also discovers deep within herself the
reason for her feelings toward her parents at the funeral of Steve Gauley.
At first, the parents decide that they are lucky to have their little girl. It was just "a chain of lucky
events" (Munro 469) that kept their child from drowning. The narrator begins the "could have
been's" and the if only's" that life is full of. Dwelling on the other possibilities does not remove the
reality that does exist. It is like "laying your finger on the wire to get a safe shock, feeling a bit of
what it is like, then pulling back" (Munro 470). If the "what if's" did happen the narrator realizes
that her life could had been changed drastically in a matter of

What Is The Theme Of The Sea By Lord Prufrock
The poem starts with him talking about a question he wants to ask. Throughout the poem, he walks
towards a destination and when he arrives he never dares to do anything; this is the attitude he
maintains during the poem. Alfred is a middle–aged coward that has never pursued anything
because of what people might say; a man afraid of taking risks, or even decisions. A curious allusion
he uses in various lines of the poem is the sea and its related themes as: a pair of ragged claws
scuttling across the floors of silent seas, mermaids that don't sing to him and drowning. The sea
allusion throughout the poem can summarize it as a metaphor: he is the crab because he yearns the
capacity of isolating himself from the world, the woman is the mermaid ... Show more content on

This overthinking that he does is interesting because he overanalyzed every simple action that he
does or that someone around him does. Probably he feels asphyxiated at times when he is around a
lot of people. Thus, in the beach, when he drowns, he is having a kind of panic attack. At the
whorehouse there are a lot of people and music, this opens the possibility of Prufrock having a panic
attack and that is why he talks about the human voices that wake him from thinking about his lover
and drown him in a panic

Personal Narrative Essay : Lifeguards : The Unsung Heroes
The Unsung Heroes
The world is full of heroes. The brave men and women who serve in the armed forces protect the
United States of America. Local police help ensure safety in cities and towns. Firefighters save lives
daily. Doctors perform life–saving surgeries. Heroes are found everywhere. Although some people
seem to forget, lifeguards are heroes too. I recently sent in an application to be a lifeguard at the
pool on campus. I was discussing hours with a classmate who is currently employed, and he told me
that the hours were long, but often a shift would pass without a single swimmer entering the water.
Another classmate interjected saying "You can do your homework while you work." Lifeguarding is
not the easy task portrayed in movies. Guards do not suntan and talk to girls for the duration of their
shift. Rather, a lifeguard's duty is in the name: guarding the lives of patrons. The work of these
heroes is often gone unpraised. The job is disregarded as an easy way for teenagers to make money,
instead of the true challenge it offers to the employees. The process of becoming a lifeguard requires
more than blowing a whistle. It is a commitment involving intricate knowledge acquired through
training and experience. Lifeguarding is a serious commitment.
As I jumped into the water, I only had one thing on my mind: saving the victim. As I swam towards
her I saw her head slip under. I called for a backboard before I dove beneath the surface to bring her
head above the water. I

victim needs help, the lifeguard should assess the victim's condition and use an appropriate rescue.
The skills in this chapter can be used in most aquatic environments, although they may have to be

The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2014
Many pieces of literature are written each year, and each year dedicated high school students come
together to read any type of literature ranging from plays, poetry, graphic novels to podcasts. Out of
all the pieces of literature the students read, the students will debate which piece they believe is best.
Once all these pieces are chosen, an anthology is created, "The Best American Nonrequired Reading
2014". In the introduction of this book, Lemony Snicket claims, "the most passionate and interesting
pieces of writing divide a literary team" (Snicket xii). Literary pieces divide people in their opinions
since the pieces allow readers to interpret the pieces differently and gives the readers a sense of
mystery.

This essay suggests that the narrator is drowning, "Looking back, I wonder why all of us who were
subject to my grandfather's assaults–me, my sisters, my cousins, and my mother, her sister, their
cousins before us– didn 't display more unmistakable signs of distress" (Morgan 322). This quote
suggests that the narrator feels like she is drowning, because the author states that drowning is quiet,
and that is what the narrator doing, keeping quiet by not saying anything. Readers could interpret the
drowning swimmers as depressed people or the swimmers in distress as the people who experience
temporary panic, like students panicking over an essay. The swimmers in distress are the people who
panic over something that will eventually pass, because they feel as if there is hope for them. If
readers do not interpret the narrator as depressed, they may say that narrator did not say anything
because she did not know what to say, and writing this essay was enough to speak out.
Essays found in the anthology are compelling because of the way certain concepts were expressed in
the essays. The authors do not fully give away what happens after the essay or what each thing
symbolizes. These pieces give the readers a sense of mystery. When a sense of mystery is given,
people are able to debate what happens in the piece. The essay, "The Body" by A.T Grant is a great
example of this because when a reader first reads

My Fear Of Drowning
Everyone has a greatest fear whether it be from fear of dolls to fear of death. Fear is characterized
by a feeling of terror or dread caused by an object that you believe to be harmful. All fears are
caused by an event that has happened to someone that traumatizes them for life. A fear is sometimes
unovercomable and this may be because to overcome it one must be a certain characteristic. For
example, to overcome the fear of ugliness one must lose weight and sometimes acquire surgery. My
greatest fear is the idea of drowning and this is a fear of many. I do not have a certain characteristic
to acquire before overcoming my fear of drowning except for knowledge of pool etiquette and rules.
To understand one's fear the information about the traumatizing event must be presented. Also when
they found out the fear existed and how one overcame, if did, the fear.
Fear of drowning is my greatest fear because when I was eight I drowned in a clear, blue,
treacherous pool by the hotel with the dark burgundy–colored brick and cream–colored doors. I
remember my cousins laugh whenever someone went the wrong way as they were playing marco
polo. I was sitting on the scorching cement by the pool when I decided I wanted to cool down and
play with everyone else. I did not have the understanding of what the big, black numbers by the pool
meant, all I saw was six and dived in. As soon as I dove in, I felt the lack of air, replaced by water,
reaching my lungs as I tried to stand and breathe

Metaphors In The Glass Castle
Literary Device Quote Explanation
* 1. Implied Metaphor "you'll never build the Glass Castle," (Walls, 238). While Jeanette is
preparing to leave for New York and her father, Rex, attempts to talk her out of it by showing her the
updated plans for the Glass Castle, Walls, through Jeanette, uses an implied metaphor to show how
all her father's promises are a Glass Castle without the use of like or as. Walls uses this to illuminate
how her father's promises are broken easily like how a Glass Castle can be broken easily as it is
made of glass, which is fragile. Walls also highlights how throughout the memoir her father
promised to protect her, not only by building her a home like the Glass Castle, but also by protecting
her from men who force themselves upon her as seen when the father states, "Anyone who... laid a
finger on... Rex Walls's children was going to get their butts kicked," (Walls, 24), but the father later
goes on to allow her to be inappropriately touched by Robbie just to make some money. This shows
that the father makes promises he is unable to and often does not want to fulfill throughout the
memoir, which leads to Jeanette having to face adversity as her father is not protecting her. As a
result of her adversity, Jeanette reaches an epiphany and learns to look out for her own well–being
as she understands that her father is no longer willing to do so. She also understands that her father
will never build the Glass Castle and that all the promises that her father ever made to her are like
the Glass Castle, easily broken. This ultimately to Jeanette developing from a character who
depended solely on her father, to one that could make the decision to go to New York without her
father's permission after the 11th grade. Finally, by going to New York, Jeanette is able to provide
for her own well–being by working at a job and renting an apartment and departs from the
conventional means of wellbeing. Through the use of metaphor, Walls conveys the theme that often
for one to persevere against adversity in his or her lives, he or she must learn to go against
conventional means of well–being, like family, and find his or her individual means of well–being.

Observation On Lifeguarding
From the interviews, my observations, and my background knowledge of lifeguarding at different
facilities, I will analyze the forms of literacy at the various facilities and their importance to
successfully lifeguard.
DISCUSSION
Kaylen Marie, who is a lifeguard at a camp in Lake Wales called Circle F Dude Ranch, is
experienced in communication and literacy within the lifeguard community. She was trained by one
of her coworkers and has only been lifeguarding for less than a year but worked every day for the
entire summer and now occasionally works on the weekends. During the interview, I asked why she
believed communication is essential where she works. She stated that all the lifeguards work as a

He was trained at the Haines City Aquatic Center and then worked from April 1, 2016, to November
1, 2016. Working at a pool is different from other water facilities because when it comes to
communicating between lifeguards, the pools usually have lifeguards in proximity to each other and
have rescue equipment nearby. Even though these factors do make rescues simpler, communication
is still highly necessary to perform the rescue efficiently. He states that literacy is crucial in life
guarding due to the understanding of the knowledge required for the job and the necessity to
communicate effectively with the coworkers to save lives. When asked about the primary tool form
communication, Kyle stated in his interview that most of the communication that is done is through
a whistle. The blows from the whistle not only have different meanings, but they are used for
various things. Some of the uses are too different things to other lifeguards, communicate to patrons
in the pool, or to get the patrons' attention. He also states that he had a list of maintenance checks
from his employer when he started working. These maintenance checks include checking the pool's
pH level or make sure that all the safety equipment is in their proper place. These maintenance
sheets are a form of a genre of communication between the lifeguard and employer, so the employer
knows if there is anything wrong with the facility in order to make sure no patron gets hurt while

Baywatch Movie Analysis
I chose to do the movie Baywatch for my assignment because I never saw it and it came out in 2017.
I liked this movie because it was an action–packed comedy but it wasn't the best movie I've seen. I
would defiantly give this movie a 6.5 out of ten. This is because there were some parts that were
funny but I didn't understand why they had to be put in the movie. This movie was placed in Florida
at the beach of Emerald Bay. In this movie, there were 2 main characters which are Mitch, played by
Dwayne Johnson, and Matt Brody, played Zac Efron. This movie started off intense. Someone one
was drowning and Mitch and his team of lifeguards helped save a man from the water and bring him
back to life. You can see that Mitch is very well known around these parts and that he would always
try to do more than his job description. While he was going for a run he found drugs that washed up
on the shore. He knew what drug it was and knew it was killing people. After that is when Mitch
met his maker when they were having lifeguard tryouts. One of those people trying out was Matt
Brody. Matt Brody was a guy who grew up in the foster care system going home to home and was
used to doing things for himself and by himself. He was known for winning 2 Olympic gold medals
for swimming and when he was racing during a relay he vomited in the water and earned the
nickname "vomit comet". He was only trying out because his plea deal said he needed it do

On June 25th One cold early winter morning Evan, a 14 year old dark skinned Japanese boy woke

couldn't seem to go back to sleep because he'd been so afraid of the dream; thoughts of him
drowning was going thru his mind . As he watched the time come by faster he decided to call his
friend Rylan and tell him about why he woke up so early. Rylan is his classmate also his neighbor
that has been his friend since elementary days. Evan sat up from his sleeping position and reached
above his pillow to pick up his cell phone so he could give Rylan a call, but as he clinched onto his
cell phone a cockroach scattered over his hand then onto the bed. Once the cockroach the size of ice
cube disappeared behind the crack of the bed against the wall, he unlocked his phone using his

early, it was about 5:15am when Rylan answered his face time as if he only slept for 1 hour. He
seemed to be tired because he answered the phone by saying "go back to sleep " in a lazy tone. So

Every year, about 707 children die every year from drowning and this is absolutely unacceptable.
Swimming is a skill the vast majority of people have, but for the few that don't, it can be tragic.

from swimming. Swimming is an essential skill that everyone needs to know, as a result of this
schools should take it upon themselves to teach swimming in schools. The first point that needs to
be established is the problem of drowning. Drowning is often overshadowed by other epidemics
such as cancer and opioid overdoses. However, drowning is just as prevalent as other problems
society faces today. Drowning is such a great dilemma that "Globally, drowning is one of the ten
leading causes of child mortality" (Leavy 1). From this quote, we can observe that drowning is
causing countless unnecessary deaths all over the world. Third world countries are not the only
reason the drowning rate is so high. In the USA alone "...there were an average of 3,536 fatal
unintentional drownings (non–boating related) annually in the United States – about ten deaths per
day."("Unintentional Drowning"). This is a very stunning statistic for many reasons. The first reason
being that the US is one of the richest countries in the world; downing is typically thought of
something that happens to poorer people/communities. Another reason this statistic is stunning is
because of the sheer amount of people that

The Mammalian Reving Reflection Of The Blood Pressure
Conclusion
The mammalian dive response causes the blood pressure to increase, heart rate to decrease, and
oxygen intake to increase in individuals after they have been submerged in cold water. In this study,
after water hit the trigeminal nerve behind the nose, the diving reflex caused peripheral
vasoconstriction and bradycardia to occur in the subjects. The vasoconstriction caused the blood
pressure to increase as the body attempted to concentrate more blood around heart, lungs and brain.
The bradycardia was a result of the body attempting to conserve oxygen by (Pantennon,2013).–––––
expand bradycardia This response allows mammals to stay underwater longer, and it helps to extend
that organisms life span by overriding other reflexes such as taking an immediate breath when
suddenly exposed to water. If a mammal lacks the diving response, then it I smore likely that they
may drown because of their body not being able to properly respond to the lack of oxygen.
The reactions observed could have also been the result of either the body preparing for hypothermia
or simply responding to the cold– water shock. Cold water shock is the body's response to being
suddenly exposed to cold–water. Cold water shock also causes vasoconstriction by causing the
blood vessels in the skin to close; both increase the resistance of blood flow which increases blood
pressure. However, cold–water shock causes the heart rate to increase, not decrease, as the
mammalian dive response does. The sudden

Is It Was Time For Your Life?
Lifeguarding Diagnosis Paper Two summers ago, I decided that it was time for me to go out into the
real world and get a job but also, my parents told me it was time to get a job, so that's what I did.
After a few weeks of applying to jobs, my friends told be about a lifeguarding job at Wet'n Wild
waterpark. I thought hey this would be a good opportunity to work in a cool place for the summer,
meet some people and make some money as well. I go through the hiring process and become a
lifeguard, and I enjoyed every moment of my summer working there. I enjoyed it so much that I
went back there to work again before my study abroad program started. I worked for Wet'n Wild
waterpark as a lifeguard for a combined total of 4 months. The park hired many lifeguards during
peak season which ran from the end of May to the beginning of September. As a lifeguard I was
entrusted with making sure that everybody enjoyed their time in the park and obeyed the rules so
that no one would get injured. There were two different lifeguard positions: shallow water and deep
water. Deep water required more certification and was paid more for their services but I chose to be
a shallow water lifeguard because I did not want to go through more training. The park is located at
6200 International Drive in Orlando, Florida 32819. The park is open every day of the year
including holidays. The hours are subject to change based on the day and season of the year. When I
first found out about the job at Wet'n

Intervention For Accidental Drowning In The United States
This essay will act as an overview of interventions for accidental drownings that occur all around
the United States. According to an article published in the Bull World Health Organ, drowning is
defined by the following: "[...] the process of experiencing respiratory impairment from
submersion/immersion in liquid" (van Beeck, Brance, Szpilman, Modell, Bierens, 2005). Drowning
has become a more prominent issue in the public health world and there are interventions put in
place to help. J Epidemiol Community Health journal defines intervention as, "a set of actions with
a coherent objective to bring about change or produce identifiable outcomes. These actions may
include policy, regulatory initiatives, single strategy projects or multicomponent ... Show more

There are many factors that play into the causes of these drownings, but the best way to address the
rise of accidental drownings is through prevention. According to the CDC there are many different
precautions that could be taken to avoid an accident. Research has found that if a child participates
in formal swimming lessons, it can reduce the risk of drowning in ages 1 to 4 years old (CDC,
2016). Along with swimming lessons, teaching pre–school and elementary children essential water
safety and water hazards is also prevention. Water safety education is important to teach at a young
age so that children are able to grow up with that knowledge. Another essential precaution is one
should get CPR certified. CPR can save a life and if CPR is started soon enough, the outlook of that
person living is higher. Life jackets and personal float devices are also another prevention strategy
that could be

The Ymca Ywca
The lifeguards of the YMCA–YWCA are a unique group of young energetic people. We will look
closer into this group through the eyes of a sociologist. We will study the goals, hierarchal, argot and
other factors social factors within this profession. The YMCA–YWCA lifeguard group is a sub
culture. This smaller culture stems from the large society of lifeguards across Canada. The YMCA–
YWCA is made up of 21 highly trained lifeguards. The goals and regulations of these group are very
similar. The main difference of these groups are within the regulations. Each province in Canada has
different protocols in their first aid sector and training techniques. The primary goal of this group is
to prevent, protect and inform other of drownings. The YMCA–YWCA also works towards helping
teach others to swim to allow people it safely enjoy the benefits of swimming. In order to reach
these goal the guards go through extensive training. There are three main steps to this process. The
first is course training; they must participate and complete ten courses. These range from 30 hours
all the way to two weeks long. That is where they get the knowledge involved in this lifesaving
practice. Secondly they go through simulation and physical standard testing's. The simulation the
YMCA–YWCA workers go through help them practice their skills under the major pressure of time.
Physical standards test cardio, lifting capacity, speed and more. If any of these step are failed of

Lifeguard Reflection
I was a freshman in high school when I began a new step in my life. Walking into the Montgomery
County YMCA's Wilson Aquatics Center, most people see a place to swim with friends, relax and
improving wellness. Whereas I see a place full of rowdy kids, responsibility and potential danger.
Looking back, the YMCA has taught me more than just important life–saving skills. I've learned
important skills that I will need for the rest of my life.
Becoming a Lifeguard
In late October of 2016 I was contacted by the Aquatics Director about upcoming lifeguard classes. I
was very nervous and excited at the same time. Nervous because being a lifeguard meant that I had
a huge responsibility and I couldn't take the job lightly. I was also excited because I'd have a job and
I could be making money. After some speculation with my parents, we decided that getting a job
would be a great way of gaining responsibility.
Lifeguard classes were 2 days that consisted of CPR training, swimming laps, and learning rescues.
When we first began, there were three of us sitting at a table on the pool deck with an outdated
rolling TV. I was handed a 100–page lifeguarding manual my eyes bulged out of my head, the
butterflies in my stomach multiplied. Looking through the book, watching rescues and talking
through every question I had calmed my nerves. But the statistics of drowning still haunted my
mind, 360,000 people died from drowning in 2015 (WHO). All though at the YMCA in Red Oak
hasn't had a drowning,

The Snake River, Yellowstone National Park
As the gentle Colorado sun peaked through the hotel blinds, serenely flooding the room, I dreamt
that I was drowning. My hands are frantically grasping for a flipped raft, my body haphazardly
tossing and twisting through the rushing current like a rag doll as my mind flashes with some last
fleeting images of my terrified family a few feet away. And right before the water closes in, I catch a
quick glimpse of the sign directly above me––Snake River, Yellowstone National Park.
Coming to a conclusion that whitewater rafting down the Snake River was one of the worst
decisions my family has ever made, I sulked, and whined, and complained the whole walk down to
the docks. My parents, the guides, and a girl about my age in our group, all told me, "don't worry,
it'll be fun." But their efforts were pointless, and I picked up on a conversation behind me, where
someone was casually talking about the overwhelming chance the raft would flip over. Nevertheless,
everyone apparently believed it was something I would look back on and maybe even write a
personal narrative about.
Suddenly, in the middle of all that sulking and whining and complaining, I found myself in a wetsuit
and oversized life jacket, glaring at the side of a roaring river, scowling at the wispy trees that
seemed to be waving goodbye while they whispered about my tragic, inevitable death. I barely
caught the tail–end of his speech as the guide droned on about, "––and that is how you lift someone

While we were at a loss of words, we were unaware that a man was at a loss for air just a short
distance away from us. The mighty waves made it difficult to see if there were people in the water,
but the panicking crowd staring intently made it evident that something was wrong. After further
examination we were able to spot two men struggling for life in the unforgiving waters while dozens
of people watched in shock. None of us knew what to do in this situation, so we did the one thing
that we knew how to do; pray.
Tobermory, is located in the Bruce Peninsula of Ontario. Its aqua waters and breathtaking views
have made it a natural tourist attraction. This past summer I set out to Tobermory with six friends
accompanied with a thirst for exploration and adventure. We had all heard of the rocks and cliffs that
towered over the ocean–like water. We had all vicariously lived through the pictures that people had
posted on social media as well as the travel articles that we had read. But now, it was our turn to
bask in the surreal view that Tobermory had to offer.
After a short hike on a forested pathway we emerged at the top of a cliff that overlooked Georgian
Bay. The bright colour of the water, the coniferous trees scattered along the rocks that add a sprinkle
of green, and the rocks towering over the water. Where we were standing you could not see the other
end of the bay instead it look as though the waters went on forever, it is no wonder that

Poem Analysis : Tuesday 9-00 Am By Denver Butson
Individuals have been brought to believe that the only way to end their griefs and sorrows is to end
their lives. Though suicide has become a detriment and devastating issue, it has not been presumed
to be an effortless or painless act. In society, people become their own threats as they tend to isolate
themselves from others which often increases this devastating issue of unsubstantial pain and long–
suffering. In the poem, Tuesday 9:00 am, by Denver Butson, individuals are unable to speak and
move because of their own specific problems which are burdening them and their ability to help
others. The poet is enforcing the idea that individuals need to open up their eyes and be aware of
others relentless despair and their struggle to reach out.
The poem, Tuesday 9:00 am, illustrates the image of three individuals at a bus stop experiencing
unique physical challenges. Denver Butson begins by displaying a working man on fire with flames
melting his shoes into the ground below him. A couple feet away, a woman acknowledges the
burning man, but her desire to help him is burdened because she is drowning. Standing beside these
individuals, another woman yearns to aid the woman drowning, but she is fraught with blocks of ice
on her feet as she is freezing to death. Once the bus arrives, the bus driver does not even notice the
individual's lethargic struggle to board and how they did not pay because he is internally
contemplating if he actually saw the man who exited at the last stop

Victor and the Monster are Reciprocals in "Frankenstein"...
There are many themes in the novel Frankenstein. One of these themes is that the monster and
Victor are reciprocals. They were always and always will be linked. They are related in many
different ways. In the following paragraphs I have mentioned four of them. One of these ways is that
they are both isolated from society. The monster is isolated because of his physical features. Because
he is ugly he is a social outcast. Victor isolates himself twice in the novel, when he is creating his
two monsters. The first time he isolates himself because he wanted to create his monster. The second
time Victor is isolated he does it willingly, but not for him, to protect his family from the original
monster he has created. Wether it is of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The monster and Victor are also related because they both know suffering. The monster knows
suffering because he has no relations with any part of humanity. The only person he knows, his own
creator, Victor, hates him. Victor suffers from all of the deaths he had to endure, as I mentioned
before. A fourth and final reason as to why they are reciprocals is that they have the same feelings at
the same time. When the monster becomes selfless during the novel, so does Victor. In chapter XVI,
the monster tries to save a drowning girl during the day. As we have read in previous chapters, the
monster only comes out during the night and hides during the day so he doesn't risk being seen by
anyone. The monster decided he wanted to try to help the girl, even though it did mean going out
during the day and risk being seen. Once he went out of his hiding spot and tried to pull her out of
the water he was seen by a person who shot at him, thinking the monster was trying to drown her. In
this way the monster is showing that he is selfless, risking being seen to help her. At around this
time, Victor also becomes selfless. He shows his selflessness in chapter XVIII on page 151 when
Victor says. "I was aware also that I should often lose all self–command, all capacity of hiding the
harrowing sensations that would

[Hed:] Sink or Swim
[Dek:] Five ways to keep your kids safe during drowning's high season
[Byline:] Kristen Desmond LeFevre, Indiana
About 1,000 children drown each year in the U.S–enough to fill almost 20 school buses. That makes
drowning the leading cause of injury–related death among children age 1 to 4, and the second–
leading cause in children age 1 to 15, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

A full third of the nation's childrens drownings take place in the weeks between Memorial Day and

Lessons save lives: Research shows that taking formal swimming lessons reduces the risk of
drowning among children age 1 to 4 years old by 88 percent. The ISR lessons Janna teaches are
focused on teaching children 6 months old to 6 years old how to self–rescue in the water. "ISR is a
drowning–prevention program that teaches survival swimming," Janna says. In ISR lessons,
children age 6 months old to 12 months old learn the "roll–back–to–float" sequence, entering the
water face first and then rolling onto their backs where they float and breathe. Older children learn
the "swim–float–swim" sequence, rotating from floating on their backs to getting air and swimming
until they reach the safety of pool steps or a shoreline. Janna says the advantage of ISR lessons is
that they "dramatically improve its students' skills and confidence in the water." ISR has instructors
nationwide, but Janna says if you can't find a certified instructor in your area, traditional swim
lessons are the next best bet–so long as they reinforce a horizontal position in the water and don't

Oregon Trail Emigrants
Tens of thousands of people died during the westward expansion, and many groups in particular
resisted great hardships, but one group stands out. Groups that faced difficulty are the gold rush
pioneers, the Chinese railroad workers, and the Oregon trail emigrants. Out of the three, the Oregon
Trail emigrants faced the greatest difficulty because of the harsh geography, disease, and accidents
the emigrants were exposed to on the trail. Because the geography of which the Oregon ran through
was rough and brutal, it had a large impact on the travellers. The snow covered trails made it
difficult to travel on the trail, especially in the Rocky Mountains. Going through snowstorms in the
mountains was considered certain death in some areas. "there would be large snow storms, this gave

In fact, 90% of all deaths on the Oregon Trail were a result of incurable illnesses. "Most people who
died during the trip west became ill from diseases for which there was no cure" (Illinois State).
Since there was no cure for the illnesses, emigrants suffered greatly before they died. Bad water,
polluted by hastily constructed latrines, made it difficult for travelers to get an essential human right
from the rivers: water. Disease spread through convoys and wagon trains rapidly, infecting many at
a time. People witnessed the decline and death of family and friends on the trail. "You see we have
lost 7 persons in a few short days, all died of Cholera" (Freel). Martha Freel, a traveling emigrant,
witnessed the death of her friends and father to cholera,a very frequent killer on the trail. The
illnesses not only physically damaged the travellers, but mentally as well. Witnessing such sickness
of friends and family took a toll on the travellers, and lowered the will to

Dulce Et Decorum Est And Anthem For Doomed Youth
English essay
'Dulce et decorum Est' and 'anthem for doomed youth' are poems written by Wilfred Owen about his
time in 'the great war' and all the terrible things the soldiers had to go through and all the pain it
caused to not only the soldiers but also the people still at home and because of this and many other
reasons these poems do reflect their context really well. And in these poems we get a first person
view over the war as Wilfred Owen was also in the war, so he wrote a much clearer poem than those
who weren't in the war or who stayed home during the rough times. 'Dulce et decorum Est' is a great
poem written by Wilfred Owen and has a very good beginning that draws you in, 'bent double, like
old beggars under sacks' it is talking about the trench warfare and how they used to hide from the
gun shots and from all the mess. They use 'like old beggars under sacks' because it was showing
how they had to kneel down under thin small patches of tarp over them guarding them from all the
dirt, rocks and flying bullets to stay alive. This poem does reflect its context very well because he
also wrote 'Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!' this refers to the gas attacks that happened in the trenches and
in no–man land and how they were warned about the gas it also says 'fitting their clumsy helmets
just in time' which refers to how they had to get their gas masks in and even though most did it just
in time some also drowned in the gas filling their lungs with poison.

Essay on Near-Drowning in Pediatric Patients
Introduction There are an estimated 8,000 deaths per year in the United States from drowning.
Near–drowning occurs anywhere from 2–20 times more frequently (for estimated 16,000–160,000
events per year)7. The definitions for drowning and near–drowning have for the longest time been
very confusing to understand. Recent health officials have attempted to resolve some of this
confusion by redefining drowning as "the process of experiencing respiratory insufficiency or
difficulty following a submersion or immersion in a body of liquid." Near–drowning has also been
redefined as "survival from a drowning event which involved impaired consciousness or water
inhalation for 24 hours or more"2. Both near drowning and near–drowning occur when ... Show

In fact, studies suggest that one should be more focused on quantity5 rather than quality. Another
misconception was that electrolyte imbalance occurred with all submersion events. Studies have
since suggested that a significant amount of water must be aspirated (>11 ml/kg of actual body
weight) before electrolyte imbalance occurs and intervention is needed. Another misconception is
that people 'fill' their lungs during a submersion event, and that they can't breathe because of all this
extra fluid. This is not true at all. In fact, postmortem studies suggest that most submersion victims
aspirate small amounts (~4 mL/kg or less)4.
Pathophysiology While research suggests there is no significant difference between salt or fresh
water aspiration, aspiration of 1–3 ml/kg, regardless of type, will result in destroyed pulmonary
surfactant. Destroyed pulmonary surfactant causes "atelectasis, non–cardiogenic pulmonary edema,
intrapulmonary shunting, and ventilation–perfusion mismatching"1. This long list of post–aspiration
complications leads to respiratory acidosis and hypoxia. Failure to intervene quickly, especially in
our pediatric patients, leads to "cardiovascular collapse, neurological injury, and ultimately death"1.
Another important thing to consider is gastric aspiration. While the patient is panicking to resurface,
gasping for air, they generally swallow a large amount of water. During

The Open Boat By Stephen Crane
In "The Open Boat" by Stephen Crane, four men – a captain, an oiler, a correspondent, and a cook –
survive a shipwreck. They maneuver the rough waters in a dinghy, searching for land and signs of
life. After they accept that the area around a safe–house they come across is unpopulated, the men
also accept the fact that there is a very real chance that they may die. This passage delves into the
same thoughts that are rushing through all of their heads, but keeping to themselves. In such a
situation, all men think about how this could happen, and why. Alas, they do not have an answer,
and that frustrates them. Nature cannot be explained, it simply just is. This passage supports reveals
the work's overall meaning or theme of nature's indifference towards humans with story elements
consistent with Naturalist literature such as the adversity that ordinary people may face,
uncontrollable forces deciding man's fate, and man's will to triumph against that fate. To begin with,
this passage reveals the men's thoughts and feelings about their situation and nature's role in it. In
addition, the essence of their situation is also revealed. In this passage the men decide that they will
need to exchange information with one another in case someone does not survive. This illustrates
that they are coming to the realization that their lives are in danger. There is no guarantee that any
one of them will live to see another day. The men become angry when they realize that they could

The Ethics Of The Lifeguard Safety
Introduction:
Since the beginning of time, death by drowning has taken millions of lives and thousands of live
each year. Society has made incredible strides when it comes to preventing such a death but in order
to save one human from drowning another human must put his life in danger. Lifeguards have saved
countless lives with safety equipment and on sight help however lifeguards have also been too late
to prevent these horrific occurrences. In the year 2016, there is hope on the horizon, drone
lifeguards. This will revolutionize, not only beaches but also any areas that are potentially hazardous
for humans. Other previous methods of lifeguard safety was a physically fit human who was
certified to save another human in the and a floatation device, also some lifeguards used jet skis of
other forms of quick transportation in water to save surfers or body boarders. These have been
proven to be affect yet it is still putting a safe individual is a dangerous situation to save a human
who is in danger. There is an act of chivalry and honor in this way of lifeguarding but if drones can
save even more lives than pervious methods then it could change the world as well as saving a lot of
people and their families from the pain of losing a loved one. The idea of using drones has a safety
device poses a few questions. What is a drone? What are the mechanics in a drone lifeguard? How
reliable is this device? Can is cause a human more harm than good in a dangerous situation? What

Naturalisn In The Open Boat Essay example
In most traditional happy ending stories, there always appears to be evidence of supernaturalism.
However, Stephen Crane leaves out all fairy tale elements and mystical creatures in his "The Open
Boat". Throughout the whole story, there are constant examples of the raw, realistic and indifferent
parts of life. In Stephen Crane's "The Open Boat" naturalism is apparent through the use of
language, literary techniques, and thematic elements.
First of all, Crane's use of language played a large part in the naturalistic feel of the story. Crane
makes sure to use specific phrases and words that describe things exactly the way that they actually
appear. He does not 'butter up' or 'candy coat' their descriptions in order to prevent the reader ...

It served as a reminder for the men on board– that their lives could be taken from them at any
moment, and it was a mystery as to when they will die or if they will stay alive. It was the idea that
fate was chewing at them at the mercy of the giant powerful ocean. "When it occurs to a man that
nature does not regard him as important, and that she feels she would not maim the universe by
disposing of him, he at first wishes to throw bricks at the temple, and he hates deeply the fact that
there are no bricks and no temples." Similarly to what Crane said– nature could care less if these
men die, and it will not change its course just to fulfill the wants of theses abandoned men. It stops
for no one.
The dialogue played out by these men as also an important literary technique. They continue to
banter back and forth, displaying hope and loss of hope. There are plenty of examples throughout
the story that show the men trying and trying again to regain this hope. They know in the back of
their minds that there is a slim chance that they will survive this situation. Crane uses this realistic
dialogue to show these men's emotions, and decline of confidence. Realistically, anyone who is
caught in a situation like this tries to look for any of the positives because they are trying to maintain
that glimpse of hope. For example, the cook says "'There's a house of refuge

Cpr ( American Thoracic Society )
What is CPR? CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is a medical technique used to treat
shortness of breath (American Thoracic Society). There are two types of CPR (American Thoracic
Society). The first of these two types is called Basic life Support (BLS) which is the form of CPR
that we see in most movies (American Thoracic Society). In BLS we use a combination of chest
compressions and artificial breathing (mouth to mouth) to stabilize a patient (American Thoracic
Society). The second Type of CPR is called Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) in this form of
CPR makes use of a combination of electric shocks, medication, or a ventilator (American Thoracic
Society).
What is CPR meant to treat? CPR can be used to treat Overdoses, excessive bleeding (after the
wound has been wrapped) Heart problems, infections in the blood stream, drowning, strokes,
electrical shocks, choking, lung disease, and poisoning(Heller, J. L. (n.d.). CPR).
In order to preform CPR you must follow the following steps, First Check your surroundings, make

being of others. Not surprisingly, a similar definition was found in the Oxford English Dictionary
(OED). Service is described in the Oxford English Dictionary as "the action of serving, helping, or
benefiting; conduct tending to the welfare or advantage of another; condition or employment of a
public servant; friendly or professional assistance." Furthermore, in Webster's Ninth New Collegiate
Dictionary, service is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A service berry is "any one of various American trees or shrubs of the genus Amelanchier"
(Dictionary of Americanisms). The second definition was one many may not have recognized right
away. Service is "public worship according to form and order" (OED). After people read this they
think, of course! People are always saying "are you going to attend service on Sunday?" Many
immediately think the word service means providing for another and completely forget by attending
mass they are performing a service to a higher being.
Becoming so firmly planted in one definition of service people tend to ignore its other uses. A strong
attachment to one definition or another can be attributed to working as a lifeguard or work with
other programs like YouVote. With YouVote, participants are helping and benefitting others by
providing them with information important to upcoming elections. By providing people with
information it helps them along their way to making an educated decision when they vote. Working
with YouVote has helped to extend the definition of service to all persons who help or serve others
like; waitresses, teachers, lifeguards, doctors, lawyers, coaches, and the government. The
government continuously provides "service" to our country, or at least they try. The many readings
in WRA135 class have shown the government needs to provide more service to those in need like all
those living below the poverty line and/or on

Kayaking Misadventure: Recalling a Frigid Outdoor Experience Gone Wrong

  • 1. The And I Do Not Bode Well Together Kayaking and I do not bode well together. I despise the icy water that leaks into the tiny boat along with everything else involved in this activity. Relentlessly trying to remain in my kayak as the freezing cold water sprays my face no matter which way I turn, I watch my fellow grade 8 friends as they too struggle to stay inside. After hopping into the wobbly kayak, burning cold water already spritzing my face, I could tell the next 45 minutes would be absolutely dreadful. Paddling around the same section of lake, my hands are fully numbed by the cold and I am bored to bits. Eagerly waiting for the camp instructor to whistle us back to shore, I give up on paddling all together and bob along the water. This past week has undeniably been ... However funny it may be watching the boys squeal like babies, I begin mentally preparing myself for the torture that awaits me. I can't possibly be the only one who doesn't play along – I don't want to be that wussy girl. Following suit, a few girls run in and out, shrieking and laughing as they bolt towards the sauna. Finally, the instructor himself rushes past me at top speed for the water and douses himself. Laughing all alone, I realize I am the last man standing. Sporting my big rubber boots, jeans, 2 sweaters and raincoat, I gather one last deep breath before I sprint at full force towards the freezing body of water. Crashing into the shallow waters, screaming as the cold hits and stings my entire body, I immerse myself in the lake. I must admit, this feels awfully wild and thrilling! Once I am fully drenched in ice water, I try making my way back to shore, however, water fills my boots and slows me down. There is so much water inside my boots that the cold is getting the best of me so I lunge towards land, losing a shoe in the process. Great, I think. Now I have to get back into the lake of death to find my damn boot. Dreading the idea of going back into the water, I gather my brave and run back in to retrieve my boot. Feeling around, my foot feels the boot ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Personal Narrative Essay : My Memorable Drowning Moment My Memorable Drowning Moment When we hear, "Mind–stability, body and character," we think of the freshmen in high school, who also love swimming. In addition, most of us have a memory from our childhood about a time we were almost drowned in trying to swim in deep water, and I am no exception. I struggled to swim in the deep water that compressed my body like the weight of the galaxy was on my shoulders. When life was in danger, I hung in there, and I did not back down, and I did not give up my life. So, the moment etched in my head that being rescued by your companion is possible. I learn that obstacles can be overcome, fears can be strengths, and sometimes an accident becomes an opportunity. In the summer 1963, I often visited a swimming pool in my town, where I loved to hang around with my friends in the weekend. I was a fourteen–years–old boy, and Joan was my girl companion. I would stare secretly at Joan, standing as a dolphin in the pool of rigging–water theme park. Then, Joan was diving from its springboard and butterflying her laps on the tracks, and she made the blue water splashing over us. You might think that I was so beguiled by her sensual beauty that I would jump into the cool pool. But, sadly, I was convinced that the water would choke my throat, and I might die under water, so I had deep–water phobia. Admiring her esteemed appearance, I eyed secretly Joan with a mixture of delight and awe, as I disclosed my best prospect of celebrity. "If you want my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Characteristics Of Erges And Escher Part III. Modernism, Postmodernism and Escher: Relate Escher's lithographs Magic Mirror, Print Gallery, Waterfall and Relativity to Borges and Kafka's work. What aspects and/or themes of their work could these prints illustrate? What Modernist and Postmodernist characteristics do you find in them? Mauritius Cornelis (M.C.) Escher was a Dutch artist that focused on drawing and printmaking. In correlation with Escher's work, the themes of his pieces often centered the impossible. These creative ideas present Modernist and Postmodernist characteristics, as they draw on the subconscious and fragmentary nature of human life. In the lithograph Magic Mirror, there is a large emphasis placed on the fictional winged–lion, while Print Gallery ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this work, Marquez focuses on corruption as Senator Onesimo Sanchez accepts pay offs from his people. As specified by the text, "In this story he is clearly a corrupt politician who accepts bribes and stays in power by helping the local property owners avoid reform" (2053). Accordingly, in the text, Sanchez speaks at a rally and knowingly presents promises that he does not intend to keep. In the text, it states,"We will no longer be foundlings in our own country, orphans of God in a realm of thirst and bad climate, exiles in our own land. We will be different people, ladies and gentlemen, we will be a great and happy people," (2056). This quote emphasizes that Sanchez deceives his people in order to stay in power. Additionally, Sanchez encounters Nelson Farina, who is an escaped convict that continuously begs him for a false–identification card. Thus, Farina sends his daughter, Laura, to seduce Sanchez into providing him with an ID. However, Laura is wearing a chastity–belt that her father uses to persuade Sanchez into delivering his request. Ultimately, these ideas relate to the theme of corruption as Sanchez relays and performs deals based on his own satisfaction. Another theme within the story is loneliness. This theme is prominent in the work, because Sanchez suffers alone due to his underlying alienation. Sanchez is a husband and a father, yet he never tells any of them that he has six months and eleven days to live. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Summary Of A Love Song By Prufrock By calling this poem a "love song", Eliot creates a sense of irony. When hearing the words love song, most people imagine beautiful imagery and breathtaking metaphors. Eliot's word choice despites a world of uncertainty, insecurity, and loneliness. "When the evening is spread out against the sky. Like a patient etherized upon a table." A patient who is "etherized" is completely vulnerable. One can't move or speak or protest. They are naked and scared. Their lives are completely in another's hands. Love makes Prufrock feel this exact way. He is confused and scared. He has no control over how others feel about him. He feels if he risks loving someone, he will be "etherized" in his own way. He will be lying on the table hoping the other person is willing to take his life in their hands. This is something he is unsure he even wants. Prufrock is so crippled by his own insecurity that he isn't willing to put himself out there. He even questions his own intent when he states,"To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?" The decision to use the word dare makes readers question why is love such a risk for him? Readers understand that he is self–conscious when he explains, "They will say: "How his hair is growing thin." He is worried that the women will just laugh at his insecurities. Eliot uses "the yellow fog" as a metaphor for the way love makes him feel. Due to the recent events of the Industrial era, smog had become part of everyone's daily lives. This yellow fog was everywhere. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At the time, there were two vans driving to Waimea coming from the mermaid caves. The boys had a van of their own as well as the girls. The sound of their laughter could fill up the streets of New York City. Everyone enjoyed themselves as they rode around the roads of North Shore feeling the pulse of the music in their bodies as they sang to the top of their lungs. Everything was perfect, at the time their only problem was who was going to play the music. "Come on already, just pick a song!" Olivia said. "This is taking way too long." complained Lily. "Okay!!!" Loren replied. "Just wait." Just as the two vans arrived to the destination. The sound of the waves crashing to the shore made them anxious. They were all at awe by the huge waves rising three feet above the people on the bay. As soon as the vans came to a stop they immediately got out, took their bags, and ran to the sand. Everyone was in a happy mood. The sun shining above their heads, sand beneath their feet, and the sound of the waves gave them life. They all stacked their bags one on top the other and ran to the shore. They were just standing there, looking at the waves, soaking in the beautiful scenery. The hilarious entertainment of Max and Uncle John putting together the Doughboy swimming pool a distant memory, they now felt like they were the envy of the neighborhood to get such a luxury item. Not being tall enough to touch the bottom of the pool, Sam, Susan, and Beth each had to wear a bright orange life jacket which kept them afloat, but prevented them from learning how to swim before going on the family vacation to Camp Livingstone. The fact that Susan did not know how to swim would be the prelude to one of the most embarrassing and traumatizing events in her life. ~ Now that is music to my ears, embarrassing and traumatizing. ~ Camp Livingstone, an amazing family campground, was packed with fun–filled activities from sunup till sundown. There was something for everyone: swimming, canoeing, water bicycles, arts and crafts, and nightly canteen parties for the teenagers. One of the family rules while vacationing at Camp Livingstone was to be paired off in groups of two or more at all times. No one was ever allowed to wander off alone. On the first day of their weeklong stay, Millie and Susan were paired off. They walked from their tent to the lake, about the distance of two football fields. The event's coordinator announced a swimming contest would begin on the shoreline and end at the square platform 100 yards away. Millie pressured Susan, "Come on, Sue. Let's do the race." "Millie, I'm not a good swimmer. I've only gone without a life jacket a couple of times." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Importance Of Becoming A Lifeguard As you watch your TV show or a movie you might see a lifeguard and wonder, "How do I become a lifeguard?" Though it isn't as glamorous as Hollywood portrays, becoming a lifeguard is a great experience. Becoming a lifeguard does, however, require some physically demanding training and social skills. With the proper training, you can also be the lifeguard at your local pool. To begin the path to become a lifeguard, you must first find when your local pool is taking applications. Being observant is the key here to find the listing in your local newspaper. Your school also may announce the applications are being taken at the time. Before you apply, you must first question yourself if you are a good applicant to become a lifeguard. If you do not consider yourself a strong swimmer, or consider yourself shy and afraid to speak to strangers, you are not a good fit for this job. Generally to be hired as a lifeguard you will need to submit a resume and have an interview. At an interview you should present yourself professionally and prove to the employer why you are the best candidate for the job. Once hired, all lifeguards must attend training courses before they can get on the stand. Training courses can be hosted by the pool you are employed at, or occasionally new trainees must travel to attend their required courses. Lifeguards are trained to respond specifically to the situation. There are three ways a lifeguard can enter the pool to save a victim, as well as different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Persuasive Speech On How To Being A Lifeguard Growing up spending summers at the pool lounging around and having lifeguards watch you, and then one day it is finally your turn to get a job and be the teenager who sits on the tall metal stands watching families lounge around. Being a teenager you are excited to spend the summer getting tan and making money. One must look around and find that the YMCA is hiring summer guards and at $7.25 an hour how can you beat that? Im going to explain to you how to reach the goal of becoming a lifeguard. First before applying for your dream job one must take a lifeguarding course. Its three– weeks long and cost about 200 dollars. During this class you learn to spot potential victims and accidents. Also to handle pool members who are breaking the rules ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of the skills you learned with these trainings are saving a victim from drowning, how to approach a person who is choking and use the Heimlich maneuver, on them and how to restart a person's heart, either using the AED or chest compressions. So now that you are lifeguard certified, you can watch over the pool and keep the waters safe and also save someone's life. With your First aid training, you learn to deal with things outside as the pool, such as someone in shock, deep cuts, and cleaning up bodily fluids. For example if someone falls back and their blood is on the deck you know the first step is to clear scene, then put on your gloves while avoiding the blood and care for the pool goer and then finally clean up the blood and make it a clean environment once again. Still the most important part of being a lifeguard is knowing you can save someone's life. This is why the lifeguard course is 3 weeks long because once you become a lifeguard your job is keeping people safe and you must know how to do that without a hesitation. That also explains all the tests you must pass in order to complete the class including book tests and water tests. Once you pass all these you will do a practical guard where you will guard with an experienced guard for 3 hours so they can show you the ropes and make you feel more confident as a new guard. • 17. Fate in Miles City, Montana by Alice Munro Essay Fate in Miles City, Montana by Alice Munro In life no one knows their actual fate and the story "Miles City, Montana" gives a true picture of just that. In this story, we see two different times and events that take place. The first event is the death of a childhood friend and the second is an almost unexpected tragedy that makes a woman think back to the childhood catastrophe. Munro uses mostly dialog to help give the reader a description of the theme in her story. In "Miles City, Montana," Alice Munro discusses some realities of life: how drastically things can change, and how quickly and unexpectedly death can come. The narrator states that maybe there would be a pool in the next town. There was a pool, but with the turn of events, maybe the fact was not so fortunate. First of all the pool was closed, but because her children were so hot and tired of sitting in the car the narrator begged the lifeguard to allow her children to swim. After the lifeguard consented, she dressed her children in swimming suits and then went to find a drink for herself. When she felt a mother's intuition for her children she ran back to the pool and at first did not see her youngest daughter. Her daughter had fallen into the deep end of the pool. Although the little girl did not drown, the mother was still shaken. At this point, the narrator finally discovers what the realities of life are. She also discovers deep within herself the reason for her feelings toward her parents at the funeral of Steve Gauley. At first, the parents decide that they are lucky to have their little girl. It was just "a chain of lucky events" (Munro 469) that kept their child from drowning. The narrator begins the "could have been's" and the if only's" that life is full of. Dwelling on the other possibilities does not remove the reality that does exist. It is like "laying your finger on the wire to get a safe shock, feeling a bit of what it is like, then pulling back" (Munro 470). • 19. What Is The Theme Of The Sea By Lord Prufrock The poem starts with him talking about a question he wants to ask. Throughout the poem, he walks towards a destination and when he arrives he never dares to do anything; this is the attitude he maintains during the poem. Alfred is a middle–aged coward that has never pursued anything because of what people might say; a man afraid of taking risks, or even decisions. A curious allusion he uses in various lines of the poem is the sea and its related themes as: a pair of ragged claws scuttling across the floors of silent seas, mermaids that don't sing to him and drowning. The sea allusion throughout the poem can summarize it as a metaphor: he is the crab because he yearns the capacity of isolating himself from the world, the woman is the mermaid ... Probably he feels asphyxiated at times when he is around a lot of people. Thus, in the beach, when he drowns, he is having a kind of panic attack. At the whorehouse there are a lot of people and music, this opens the possibility of Prufrock having a panic attack and that is why he talks about the human voices that wake him from thinking about his lover and drown him in a panic ... • 21. Personal Narrative Essay : Lifeguards : The Unsung Heroes The Unsung Heroes The world is full of heroes. The brave men and women who serve in the armed forces protect the United States of America. Local police help ensure safety in cities and towns. Firefighters save lives daily. Doctors perform life–saving surgeries. Heroes are found everywhere. Although some people seem to forget, lifeguards are heroes too. I recently sent in an application to be a lifeguard at the pool on campus. I was discussing hours with a classmate who is currently employed, and he told me that the hours were long, but often a shift would pass without a single swimmer entering the water. Another classmate interjected saying "You can do your homework while you work." Lifeguarding is not the easy task portrayed in movies. Guards do not suntan and talk to girls for the duration of their shift. Rather, a lifeguard's duty is in the name: guarding the lives of patrons. The work of these heroes is often gone unpraised. The job is disregarded as an easy way for teenagers to make money, instead of the true challenge it offers to the employees. The process of becoming a lifeguard requires more than blowing a whistle. It is a commitment involving intricate knowledge acquired through training and experience. Lifeguarding is a serious commitment. As I jumped into the water, I only had one thing on my mind: saving the victim. As I swam towards her I saw her head slip under. I called for a backboard before I dove beneath the surface to bring her head above the water. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2014 Many pieces of literature are written each year, and each year dedicated high school students come together to read any type of literature ranging from plays, poetry, graphic novels to podcasts. Out of all the pieces of literature the students read, the students will debate which piece they believe is best. Once all these pieces are chosen, an anthology is created, "The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2014". In the introduction of this book, Lemony Snicket claims, "the most passionate and interesting pieces of writing divide a literary team" (Snicket xii). Literary pieces divide people in their opinions since the pieces allow readers to interpret the pieces differently and gives the readers a sense of mystery. The most passionate and ... This essay suggests that the narrator is drowning, "Looking back, I wonder why all of us who were subject to my grandfather's assaults–me, my sisters, my cousins, and my mother, her sister, their cousins before us– didn 't display more unmistakable signs of distress" (Morgan 322). This quote suggests that the narrator feels like she is drowning, because the author states that drowning is quiet, and that is what the narrator doing, keeping quiet by not saying anything. Readers could interpret the drowning swimmers as depressed people or the swimmers in distress as the people who experience temporary panic, like students panicking over an essay. The swimmers in distress are the people who panic over something that will eventually pass, because they feel as if there is hope for them. If readers do not interpret the narrator as depressed, they may say that narrator did not say anything because she did not know what to say, and writing this essay was enough to speak out. Essays found in the anthology are compelling because of the way certain concepts were expressed in the essays. The authors do not fully give away what happens after the essay or what each thing symbolizes. These pieces give the readers a sense of mystery. When a sense of mystery is given, people are able to debate what happens in the piece. The essay, "The Body" by A.T Grant is a great example of this because when a reader first reads ... • 28. My Fear Of Drowning Everyone has a greatest fear whether it be from fear of dolls to fear of death. Fear is characterized by a feeling of terror or dread caused by an object that you believe to be harmful. All fears are caused by an event that has happened to someone that traumatizes them for life. A fear is sometimes unovercomable and this may be because to overcome it one must be a certain characteristic. For example, to overcome the fear of ugliness one must lose weight and sometimes acquire surgery. My greatest fear is the idea of drowning and this is a fear of many. I do not have a certain characteristic to acquire before overcoming my fear of drowning except for knowledge of pool etiquette and rules. To understand one's fear the information about the traumatizing event must be presented. Also when they found out the fear existed and how one overcame, if did, the fear. Fear of drowning is my greatest fear because when I was eight I drowned in a clear, blue, treacherous pool by the hotel with the dark burgundy–colored brick and cream–colored doors. I remember my cousins laugh whenever someone went the wrong way as they were playing marco polo. I was sitting on the scorching cement by the pool when I decided I wanted to cool down and play with everyone else. I did not have the understanding of what the big, black numbers by the pool meant, all I saw was six and dived in. • 30. Metaphors In The Glass Castle Literary Device Quote Explanation * 1. Implied Metaphor "you'll never build the Glass Castle," (Walls, 238). While Jeanette is preparing to leave for New York and her father, Rex, attempts to talk her out of it by showing her the updated plans for the Glass Castle, Walls, through Jeanette, uses an implied metaphor to show how all her father's promises are a Glass Castle without the use of like or as. Walls uses this to illuminate how her father's promises are broken easily like how a Glass Castle can be broken easily as it is made of glass, which is fragile. Walls also highlights how throughout the memoir her father promised to protect her, not only by building her a home like the Glass Castle, but also by protecting her from men who force themselves upon her as seen when the father states, "Anyone who... laid a finger on... Rex Walls's children was going to get their butts kicked," (Walls, 24), but the father later goes on to allow her to be inappropriately touched by Robbie just to make some money. This shows that the father makes promises he is unable to and often does not want to fulfill throughout the memoir, which leads to Jeanette having to face adversity as her father is not protecting her. As a result of her adversity, Jeanette reaches an epiphany and learns to look out for her own well–being as she understands that her father is no longer willing to do so. She also understands that her father will never build the Glass Castle and that all the promises that her father ever made to her are like the Glass Castle, easily broken. This ultimately to Jeanette developing from a character who depended solely on her father, to one that could make the decision to go to New York without her father's permission after the 11th grade. Finally, by going to New York, Jeanette is able to provide for her own well–being by working at a job and renting an apartment and departs from the conventional means of wellbeing. Through the use of metaphor, Walls conveys the theme that often for one to persevere against adversity in his or her lives, he or she must learn to go against conventional means of well–being, like family, and find his or her individual means of well–being. * 2. Even though these factors do make rescues simpler, communication is still highly necessary to perform the rescue efficiently. He states that literacy is crucial in life guarding due to the understanding of the knowledge required for the job and the necessity to communicate effectively with the coworkers to save lives. When asked about the primary tool form communication, Kyle stated in his interview that most of the communication that is done is through a whistle. I liked this movie because it was an action–packed comedy but it wasn't the best movie I've seen. I would defiantly give this movie a 6.5 out of ten. This is because there were some parts that were funny but I didn't understand why they had to be put in the movie. This movie was placed in Florida at the beach of Emerald Bay. In this movie, there were 2 main characters which are Mitch, played by Dwayne Johnson, and Matt Brody, played Zac Efron. This movie started off intense. Someone one was drowning and Mitch and his team of lifeguards helped save a man from the water and bring him back to life. You can see that Mitch is very well known around these parts and that he would always try to do more than his job description. While he was going for a run he found drugs that washed up on the shore. He knew what drug it was and knew it was killing people. After that is when Mitch met his maker when they were having lifeguard tryouts. One of those people trying out was Matt Brody. Matt Brody was a guy who grew up in the foster care system going home to home and was used to doing things for himself and by himself. • 38. Persuasive Essay About Drowning In Schools Every year, about 707 children die every year from drowning and this is absolutely unacceptable. Swimming is a skill the vast majority of people have, but for the few that don't, it can be tragic. Drowning and obesity are all too common these days, these two problems in particular can be fixed from swimming. Swimming is an essential skill that everyone needs to know, as a result of this schools should take it upon themselves to teach swimming in schools. The first point that needs to be established is the problem of drowning. Drowning is often overshadowed by other epidemics such as cancer and opioid overdoses. However, drowning is just as prevalent as other problems society faces today. Drowning is such a great dilemma that "Globally, drowning is one of the ten leading causes of child mortality" (Leavy 1). From this quote, we can observe that drowning is causing countless unnecessary deaths all over the world. Third world countries are not the only reason the drowning rate is so high. In the USA alone "...there were an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings (non–boating related) annually in the United States – about ten deaths per day."("Unintentional Drowning"). This is a very stunning statistic for many reasons. The first reason being that the US is one of the richest countries in the world; downing is typically thought of something that happens to poorer people/communities. Another reason this statistic is stunning is because of the sheer amount of people that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. The Mammalian Reving Reflection Of The Blood Pressure Conclusion The mammalian dive response causes the blood pressure to increase, heart rate to decrease, and oxygen intake to increase in individuals after they have been submerged in cold water. In this study, after water hit the trigeminal nerve behind the nose, the diving reflex caused peripheral vasoconstriction and bradycardia to occur in the subjects. The vasoconstriction caused the blood pressure to increase as the body attempted to concentrate more blood around heart, lungs and brain. The bradycardia was a result of the body attempting to conserve oxygen by (Pantennon,2013).––––– expand bradycardia This response allows mammals to stay underwater longer, and it helps to extend that organisms life span by overriding other reflexes such as taking an immediate breath when suddenly exposed to water. If a mammal lacks the diving response, then it I smore likely that they may drown because of their body not being able to properly respond to the lack of oxygen. The reactions observed could have also been the result of either the body preparing for hypothermia or simply responding to the cold– water shock. Cold water shock is the body's response to being suddenly exposed to cold–water. Cold water shock also causes vasoconstriction by causing the blood vessels in the skin to close; both increase the resistance of blood flow which increases blood pressure. However, cold–water shock causes the heart rate to increase, not decrease, as the mammalian dive response does. The sudden ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I go through the hiring process and become a lifeguard, and I enjoyed every moment of my summer working there. I enjoyed it so much that I went back there to work again before my study abroad program started. I worked for Wet'n Wild waterpark as a lifeguard for a combined total of 4 months. The park hired many lifeguards during peak season which ran from the end of May to the beginning of September. As a lifeguard I was entrusted with making sure that everybody enjoyed their time in the park and obeyed the rules so that no one would get injured. There were two different lifeguard positions: shallow water and deep water. Deep water required more certification and was paid more for their services but I chose to be a shallow water lifeguard because I did not want to go through more training. Along with swimming lessons, teaching pre–school and elementary children essential water safety and water hazards is also prevention. Water safety education is important to teach at a young age so that children are able to grow up with that knowledge. Another essential precaution is one should get CPR certified. I've learned important skills that I will need for the rest of my life. Becoming a Lifeguard In late October of 2016 I was contacted by the Aquatics Director about upcoming lifeguard classes. I was very nervous and excited at the same time. Nervous because being a lifeguard meant that I had a huge responsibility and I couldn't take the job lightly. • 54. Poem Analysis : Tuesday 9-00 Am By Denver Butson Individuals have been brought to believe that the only way to end their griefs and sorrows is to end their lives. Though suicide has become a detriment and devastating issue, it has not been presumed to be an effortless or painless act. In society, people become their own threats as they tend to isolate themselves from others which often increases this devastating issue of unsubstantial pain and long– suffering. In the poem, Tuesday 9:00 am, by Denver Butson, individuals are unable to speak and move because of their own specific problems which are burdening them and their ability to help others. The poet is enforcing the idea that individuals need to open up their eyes and be aware of others relentless despair and their struggle to reach out. The poem, Tuesday 9:00 am, illustrates the image of three individuals at a bus stop experiencing unique physical challenges. Denver Butson begins by displaying a working man on fire with flames melting his shoes into the ground below him. A couple feet away, a woman acknowledges the burning man, but her desire to help him is burdened because she is drowning. Standing beside these individuals, another woman yearns to aid the woman drowning, but she is fraught with blocks of ice on her feet as she is freezing to death. Once the bus arrives, the bus driver does not even notice the individual's lethargic struggle to board and how they did not pay because he is internally contemplating if he actually saw the man who exited at the last stop ... They were always and always will be linked. They are related in many different ways. In the following paragraphs I have mentioned four of them. One of these ways is that they are both isolated from society. The monster is isolated because of his physical features. Because he is ugly he is a social outcast. Victor isolates himself twice in the novel, when he is creating his two monsters. The first time he isolates himself because he wanted to create his monster. The second time Victor is isolated he does it willingly, but not for him, to protect his family from the original monster he has created. Wether it is of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The monster and Victor are also related because they both know suffering. The monster knows suffering because he has no relations with any part of humanity. The only person he knows, his own creator, Victor, hates him. Victor suffers from all of the deaths he had to endure, as I mentioned before. A fourth and final reason as to why they are reciprocals is that they have the same feelings at the same time. When the monster becomes selfless during the novel, so does Victor. In chapter XVI, the monster tries to save a drowning girl during the day. As we have read in previous chapters, the monster only comes out during the night and hides during the day so he doesn't risk being seen by anyone. The monster decided he wanted to try to help the girl, even though it did mean going out during the day and risk being seen. Once he went out of his hiding spot and tried to pull her out of the water he was seen by a person who shot at him, thinking the monster was trying to drown her. In this way the monster is showing that he is selfless, risking being seen to help her. At around this time, Victor also becomes selfless. He shows his selflessness in chapter XVIII on page 151 when Victor says. "I was aware also that I should often lose all self–command, all capacity of hiding the harrowing sensations that would ... Lessons save lives: Research shows that taking formal swimming lessons reduces the risk of drowning among children age 1 to 4 years old by 88 percent. The ISR lessons Janna teaches are focused on teaching children 6 months old to 6 years old how to self–rescue in the water. "ISR is a drowning–prevention program that teaches survival swimming," Janna says. In ISR lessons, children age 6 months old to 12 months old learn the "roll–back–to–float" sequence, entering the water face first and then rolling onto their backs where they float and breathe. Older children learn the "swim–float–swim" sequence, rotating from floating on their backs to getting air and swimming until they reach the safety of pool steps or a shoreline. Janna says the advantage of ISR lessons is that they "dramatically improve its students' skills and confidence in the water." ISR has instructors nationwide, but Janna says if you can't find a certified instructor in your area, traditional swim lessons are the next best bet–so long as they reinforce a horizontal position in the water and don't rely on flotation devices as a teaching ... • 62. Oregon Trail Emigrants Tens of thousands of people died during the westward expansion, and many groups in particular resisted great hardships, but one group stands out. Groups that faced difficulty are the gold rush pioneers, the Chinese railroad workers, and the Oregon trail emigrants. Out of the three, the Oregon Trail emigrants faced the greatest difficulty because of the harsh geography, disease, and accidents the emigrants were exposed to on the trail. Because the geography of which the Oregon ran through was rough and brutal, it had a large impact on the travellers. The snow covered trails made it difficult to travel on the trail, especially in the Rocky Mountains. Going through snowstorms in the mountains was considered certain death in some areas. "there would be large snow storms, this gave a large threat of frostbite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, 90% of all deaths on the Oregon Trail were a result of incurable illnesses. "Most people who died during the trip west became ill from diseases for which there was no cure" (Illinois State). Since there was no cure for the illnesses, emigrants suffered greatly before they died. Bad water, polluted by hastily constructed latrines, made it difficult for travelers to get an essential human right from the rivers: water. Disease spread through convoys and wagon trains rapidly, infecting many at a time. People witnessed the decline and death of family and friends on the trail. "You see we have lost 7 persons in a few short days, all died of Cholera" (Freel). Martha Freel, a traveling emigrant, witnessed the death of her friends and father to cholera,a very frequent killer on the trail. The illnesses not only physically damaged the travellers, but mentally as well. Witnessing such sickness of friends and family took a toll on the travellers, and lowered the will to ... • 64. Dulce Et Decorum Est And Anthem For Doomed Youth English essay 'Dulce et decorum Est' and 'anthem for doomed youth' are poems written by Wilfred Owen about his time in 'the great war' and all the terrible things the soldiers had to go through and all the pain it caused to not only the soldiers but also the people still at home and because of this and many other reasons these poems do reflect their context really well. And in these poems we get a first person view over the war as Wilfred Owen was also in the war, so he wrote a much clearer poem than those who weren't in the war or who stayed home during the rough times. 'Dulce et decorum Est' is a great poem written by Wilfred Owen and has a very good beginning that draws you in, 'bent double, like old beggars under sacks' it is talking about the trench warfare and how they used to hide from the gun shots and from all the mess. They use 'like old beggars under sacks' because it was showing how they had to kneel down under thin small patches of tarp over them guarding them from all the dirt, rocks and flying bullets to stay alive. This poem does reflect its context very well because he also wrote 'Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!' this refers to the gas attacks that happened in the trenches and in no–man land and how they were warned about the gas it also says 'fitting their clumsy helmets just in time' which refers to how they had to get their gas masks in and even though most did it just in time some also drowned in the gas filling their lungs with poison. • 66. Essay on Near-Drowning in Pediatric Patients Introduction There are an estimated 8,000 deaths per year in the United States from drowning. Near–drowning occurs anywhere from 2–20 times more frequently (for estimated 16,000–160,000 events per year)7. The definitions for drowning and near–drowning have for the longest time been very confusing to understand. Recent health officials have attempted to resolve some of this confusion by redefining drowning as "the process of experiencing respiratory insufficiency or difficulty following a submersion or immersion in a body of liquid." Near–drowning has also been redefined as "survival from a drowning event which involved impaired consciousness or water inhalation for 24 hours or more"2. Both near drowning and near–drowning occur when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, studies suggest that one should be more focused on quantity5 rather than quality. Another misconception was that electrolyte imbalance occurred with all submersion events. Studies have since suggested that a significant amount of water must be aspirated (>11 ml/kg of actual body weight) before electrolyte imbalance occurs and intervention is needed. Another misconception is that people 'fill' their lungs during a submersion event, and that they can't breathe because of all this extra fluid. This is not true at all. In fact, postmortem studies suggest that most submersion victims aspirate small amounts (~4 mL/kg or less)4. Pathophysiology While research suggests there is no significant difference between salt or fresh water aspiration, aspiration of 1–3 ml/kg, regardless of type, will result in destroyed pulmonary surfactant. Destroyed pulmonary surfactant causes "atelectasis, non–cardiogenic pulmonary edema, intrapulmonary shunting, and ventilation–perfusion mismatching"1. This long list of post–aspiration complications leads to respiratory acidosis and hypoxia. Failure to intervene quickly, especially in our pediatric patients, leads to "cardiovascular collapse, neurological injury, and ultimately death"1. Another important thing to consider is gastric aspiration. While the patient is panicking to resurface, gasping for air, they generally swallow a large amount of water. During ... • 68. The Open Boat By Stephen Crane In "The Open Boat" by Stephen Crane, four men – a captain, an oiler, a correspondent, and a cook – survive a shipwreck. They maneuver the rough waters in a dinghy, searching for land and signs of life. After they accept that the area around a safe–house they come across is unpopulated, the men also accept the fact that there is a very real chance that they may die. This passage delves into the same thoughts that are rushing through all of their heads, but keeping to themselves. In such a situation, all men think about how this could happen, and why. Alas, they do not have an answer, and that frustrates them. Nature cannot be explained, it simply just is. This passage supports reveals the work's overall meaning or theme of nature's indifference towards humans with story elements consistent with Naturalist literature such as the adversity that ordinary people may face, uncontrollable forces deciding man's fate, and man's will to triumph against that fate. To begin with, this passage reveals the men's thoughts and feelings about their situation and nature's role in it. In addition, the essence of their situation is also revealed. In this passage the men decide that they will need to exchange information with one another in case someone does not survive. This illustrates that they are coming to the realization that their lives are in danger. There is no guarantee that any one of them will live to see another day. • 72. Naturalisn In The Open Boat Essay example In most traditional happy ending stories, there always appears to be evidence of supernaturalism. However, Stephen Crane leaves out all fairy tale elements and mystical creatures in his "The Open Boat". Throughout the whole story, there are constant examples of the raw, realistic and indifferent parts of life. In Stephen Crane's "The Open Boat" naturalism is apparent through the use of language, literary techniques, and thematic elements. First of all, Crane's use of language played a large part in the naturalistic feel of the story. Crane makes sure to use specific phrases and words that describe things exactly the way that they actually appear. He does not 'butter up' or 'candy coat' their descriptions in order to prevent the reader ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It served as a reminder for the men on board– that their lives could be taken from them at any moment, and it was a mystery as to when they will die or if they will stay alive. It was the idea that fate was chewing at them at the mercy of the giant powerful ocean. "When it occurs to a man that nature does not regard him as important, and that she feels she would not maim the universe by disposing of him, he at first wishes to throw bricks at the temple, and he hates deeply the fact that there are no bricks and no temples." Similarly to what Crane said– nature could care less if these men die, and it will not change its course just to fulfill the wants of theses abandoned men. It stops for no one. The dialogue played out by these men as also an important literary technique. They continue to banter back and forth, displaying hope and loss of hope. There are plenty of examples throughout the story that show the men trying and trying again to regain this hope. They know in the back of their minds that there is a slim chance that they will survive this situation. Crane uses this realistic dialogue to show these men's emotions, and decline of confidence. Realistically, anyone who is caught in a situation like this tries to look for any of the positives because they are trying to maintain that glimpse of hope. • 78. The Meaning of Service Essay The Meaning of Service Service is a word used constantly. The word service has an impression on many people. For example; people who work as lifeguards view their work as a service to the community. Naturally, based on working as a lifeguard their definition of service would be an action beneficial to the well– being of others. Not surprisingly, a similar definition was found in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). Service is described in the Oxford English Dictionary as "the action of serving, helping, or benefiting; conduct tending to the welfare or advantage of another; condition or employment of a public servant; friendly or professional assistance." Furthermore, in Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, service is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many immediately think the word service means providing for another and completely forget by attending mass they are performing a service to a higher being. Becoming so firmly planted in one definition of service people tend to ignore its other uses. A strong attachment to one definition or another can be attributed to working as a lifeguard or work with other programs like YouVote. With YouVote, participants are helping and benefitting others by providing them with information important to upcoming elections. By providing people with information it helps them along their way to making an educated decision when they vote. Working with YouVote has helped to extend the definition of service to all persons who help or serve others like; waitresses, teachers, lifeguards, doctors, lawyers, coaches, and the government. The government continuously provides "service" to our country, or at least they try. The many readings in WRA135 class have shown the government needs to provide more service to those in need like all those living below the poverty line and/or on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
