This document discusses potential film distributors for a low-budget horror film. It analyzes Warner Bros, Disney, Universal, Kaleidoscope Film Distribution, Cannes Film Festival, and Lionsgate Films as both mainstream and niche distributors. While Cannes Film Festival is good for independent films, the document concludes that Warner Bros would be a better fit since they have experience distributing mainstream horror films similar to the one being considered.
1. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
By Natdancam studios
2. Distributor list
• Warner Bros.
• Walt Disney pictures
• Universal pictures
• Kaleidoscope film distribution
• Cannes film festival (as natdancam studios)
• Lionsgate films
• Pathé distribution ltd.
4. Niche
• Kaleidoscope film distribution
• Cannes film festival (as natdancam studios)
• Lionsgate films
• Pathé distribution ltd.
5. Our media product
• Our media product is a mainstream, low budget film
which is of the horror genre
• With this in mind, being our own distributor as
natdancam studios was favorable, however and we
would present our film at the Cannes film festival
• On the other hand, our film was a mainstream
representation of a horror, therefore a distributor
which has experience with mainstream horror was
favorable e.g. Warner Bros.
7. Cannes
The Cannes film festival is where independent and high end films are shown
to possible distributors, thus making the festival a place in which many films
are picked up.
‘Colin’ was a zombie themed film that was produced by an indie British
filmmaker for £50.
It was presented at Cannes film festival as an indie horror that was then
picked up and distributed by Kaleidoscope Films, making the creator $798
As our media product is also low budget and a horror, a presentation at the
Cannes film festival would be a possibility for distribution
9. Warner Bros.
Warner brothers have distributed a number of horror movies in the past
including:
•Friday the 13th
•Gremlins 1 and 2
•The Exorcist
•Dream house
These films are all stereotypical mainstream horror movies which contain
the same/similar codes and conventions as our media product
10. Overview
Although Cannes film festival is a good way to distribute
niche horror films on a low budged, Warner bros will be
a more fitting distributer for our media product. This is
because our horror film is similar to films previously
distributed by Warner Bros. and the Cannes film festival
is a highly competitive festival which has a wide range
of films being distributed and sold at the same time by
independent and well known distributers whereas
Warner Bros. has experience in the horror field and can
distribute it with ease.
