2. For my music video I have decided to adopt a common
element in Taylor Swift’s videos in which both the
singer and character are played by the same person.
By having the character sing in the video, it creates a
visual representation of their feelings and mood,
making the video feel more real.
It also makes the video very ‘in your face’ as it is easier
to link the emotion of the lyrics to the character;
instead of the audience having to interpret each lyric.
3. From Sam Smith’s ‘I’m Not The Only One’ I was
intrigued by the juxtaposition that is present
throughout the video with the women’s inner turmoil
contrasting to the bright lighting of the setting. I
interpreted the video as having a ‘life goes on’, ‘life is
cruel’ message with the women’s pain being
unimportant to the real world.
The use of the colour ‘white’( a symbolism of purity
and innocence) also contrasts to the adultery that her
husband is committing, showing that even the most
kindest of people can be hurt and betrayed.
The wedding dress holds huge significance to plot as it
represents ‘loyalty’, ‘love’ and ‘marriage’ and,
therefore, creating a bigger impact on the viewers as
it is clear the man cheating is married. Not only is he
going against the ‘eyes of God’ but he is also breaking
a promise to his wife, making him undeserving of her.
However, as we see, it is not him who is punished but
it is the wife; highlighting how society and life are
unfair to those that are deserving of great things.
4. I have also decided to take elements from Leona
Lewis’ ‘bleeding love’ with props being used to
empathise or help the audience understand what the
lyrics are trying to convey.
Hint: relationship, break up
Hint: walls closing in (emotions taking their
toll), trapped.
Hint: crying, sad, upsetting,
overwhelming emotion.
5. Rihanna’s ‘Take a Bow’ video uses an empty mise en
scene to convey the emptiness she feels. The use of
wood could also represent her current sate of mind
with the material connoting ‘hollowness’.
Her costume of black clothing is another way to
represent her current state of mind with black
usually being associated with mourning.
For my video I have decided to take a similar
path to other music videos that are
considered ‘sad’ or ‘melancholy’. These
music videos run at a slow pace with each
scene being borderline empty ( with few
props or/and characters involved). This
allows the lyrics to be heard clearly and the
message a video is trying to portray to be
taken in.
