A study compared the expectations and goals of a university's composition program (UCP) and English language program (ELP). The UCP emphasized developing critical thinking through analytical writing, while the ELP focused on providing tools for students to communicate their points. The UCP assumed cultural knowledge of academic writing and expected sophisticated writing, while the ELP assumed no such knowledge and aimed for clear communication. The study examined how expectations differed and how writing programs could better transition ELL students.
