• Expectations of writing
between English programs
and ESL programs are very
different at the University
level.
• ESL students struggle with
academic writing at U.S.
universities.
• A study was conducted at a U.S.
University to determine the
differences between these two
programs.

• At the University used in the Study
the University Composition Program
(UCP) and the English Language
Program (ELP) where the two
programs of concern.
• Developing critical thinking skills is
emphasized
• Students are expected to write
analytical, argumentative essays.
• Writing should be issues oriented and
thesis driven.
• Writing is a process.
• Subtlety and the use of literary devices is
expected
• Emphasize a communicatively based
language
• Content based syllabi (writing to get you
point across)
• Deemphasize grammatical instruction
• Deductive essay format is taught
• Provide the students with tools to use
writing immediately in their academic
courses.

4. The academic-culture of both programs
• UCP assumes cultural knowledge of “American”
academic writing.
• ELP assumes no cultural knowledge of “American”
academic writing. They instead focus on giving students
writing skills to get their point across.
• UCP- The metagoal of the program is writing
development. Each student learns through the writing
process how to become a better writer and write an
analytical essay.
• ELP- Their metagoal is to provide immediate useable
aids. They provide students with a simplified writing
process and tools to write a deductively formed essay
• UCP- Expect their students to use sophisticated thought
and expressive language in their writing.

• ELP- Expect straightforward communication. This is
referred to as a workpersonlike prose.
• UCP- The instructors us a disciplinary matrix of rhetoric.

• ELP- The instructors are applied linguistics.
Communicative approach is heavily emphasized.

examine their assumptions and
approach to L2 students.
