1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIAPRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIAPRODUCTS?
Luke Hannon – Short film
2. Use
• I feel that my film uses forms and conventions of real
media products.
• Due to excessive watching and researching of original
short films.
• I will go through some of the points which I feel were
important.
3. Storyline
• I have found from research that a good narrative is key in a
short film. The narrative is the key in the enticement of a short
film as it is short and sweet you do not have a lot of time to get
your story across. Therefore its imperative that you get your
point across quick.
• In my film the storyline is the key part of the film as many
people commented on this in feedback. I am very pleased with
how my narrative as worked, it is very mysterious and
confusing which is like other original short films out there.
• Each short film has its own message in the storyline, mine is
how he doesn’t do everything right ( Bullying, stealing, unloving
etc.) and how karma can come back around and punish
someone (Lost in a world where he is the only one) .
4. Storyline #2
• Single narrative- as my film has a single narrative and
doesn’t have any subplots etc. this is very a like short
films as simply you don’t have the time to tell 5 stories in 5
minutes.
• This is applicable to my film as the storyline is how Tyler is
a bully then comes into trouble. It would be hard to fit into
the 6 minutes a subplot of Chloe cheating on Tyler for
example. So therefore I have stuck to what original short
films do and keep it single narrative.
5. Close ups
• Close ups were very popular in original short films as this
creates a connection between the viewer and the
character.
• The close up emphasises the emotion in the situation that
is occurring from the characters face.
• I have used plenty of close ups because as there is much
audio text being said in the film, the viewer has to
understand the situation and how the character is feeling
from the face of the actor.
6. Pace
• Most drama short films that I looked at were relatively
slow paced. This plays a big part in creating emotion and
‘setting the scene’.
• I have used this idea in my film as it shows the
desperation that Tyler is in. If my film was fast paced then
this would give off the wrong message. The message I
wanted to give off is how if you are a bully then you will
get what you deserve eventually. And the steady pace
makes the viewers understand the dismal situation Tyler
is in.
7. Stereotypes
• Due to a short film being short, (ironically) I as the creator
must make sure the mise-en-scene is in place to create
needed stereotypes so that the viewer can relate to the
film.
• Without stereotypes in a short film then it will make it
harder for the viewer to understand the roles played
therefore meaning they would need longer to understand
the film.
• This isnt possible as I have only around 5 minutes so
therefore I have to get my stereotypes across as quickly
as possible. Therefore the costume and tone of voice are
vital in the creation of Tyler’s character.
8. Summary
• Overall I feel that my short film does use codes and
conventions of real media products as it has clear links
between eachother, close ups, the storyline and the pace
of the film are just the vital similarities between which
have to be applied. Without things such as these then the
film wouldn’t work anywhere near to the same
effectiveness.
