Discuss the Minority Presence in Contemporary British Art...
Minority Presence in Contemporary British Art
"Highly visible yet evasively mute."
Art critic Kobena Mercer, comments on the current position of African and Asian artists in Contemporary British Art, when he suggests that minority
artists are seen and not heard. This oxymoronic position derives from a long historical legacy of European colonization and the emphasis on 'racial
inferiority' and 'otherness.' On the one hand, British art is progressive, allowing some minority art in the general art world. Yet on the other hand
minority art is still marginalized by the preferential treatment given to white artists. There is a strong degree of accuracy in Mercer's statement because
while minority art can now be 'seen,' the 'voice' is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The yBa movement is said to establish new ideas of Britishness in a postmodern world. Yet, Mercer goes so far as to say that the movement is in part
a reaction to the attempt to globalize the British art world: "At this stage it is precisely the discrepancy between parochial yBa inwardness and the art
world internatialism that obliges us to interrogate the ideology of New British Art as a defensive, and, above all, regressive response to the bewildering
effects of globalization" The 'important art' (as seen by Saatchi and The Tate) returns to a concern with British identity that fails to comment on how
diversity has changed that identity. By turning inward as a reaction to globalization, British art regresses and fuels a return to 'white dominance.' As a
result, multicultural art lacking Western referents become suppressed.
While there are movements to prevent this subordination of multiculturalism, their range of influence is limited. The Institute of International Visual
Arts (inIva) was founded in 1994 and its major goal is to bring artists from 'culturally–diverse backgrounds' to the attention of mainstream British
culture. However, while their success has been praised on a global level, locally they are largely overlooked. The major art insitutions refuse to
recognize artists whose thematic concentration does not

Censorship Of The Film Industry
Restriction of expression in the film industry is in the form of censorship, which in the UK was set up in 1912 as the British Board of Film
Censorship (BBFC) by the film industry as a self–regulatory body charging the film industry for the service. The local councils in the UK usually
accepted these classifications. This is a view of the censorship laws and in particular the era of the 'video nasty' and how it slipped through the film
censorship net. Looking back to the 1930's, an early example of government censorship in entertainment was at the famous 'Windmill' theatre, which
opened in London 1931 (Figure 1). In order to avoid closure, the newly appointed manger, Vivian Van Damm decided to incorporate nude females in
the theatre performances. These were known as the 'Windmill girls' and were presented as 'tableaux viviants' (meaning living picture).. The ruling
was that 'if you move, it's rude' (Wikipedia.) The performances evaded the censorship law in different ways; one was the fan dance, where the girls
would dance nude while covering themselves with the fans but at the end of the performance would stand completely still and remove the fans.
Another form of evasion was moving props while the girls stood motionless such as a still nude girl holding a spinning rope.. This idea of sidestepping
censorship laws was something that would have a big influence on censorship of films in the future.
Freaks (1932) created by Tod Browning was not received as well as his

Un Chien Andalou
Un Chien Andalou
In Un Chien Andalou (1929), Luis BuГ±uel uses montage editing to put together a series of surreal images to create what the audience can interpret as
a love story. The theme being expressed in Un Chien Andalou is that love is something that is irrational, unexplainable, and considering the fact that it
is a surrealist film, love is surreal. Along with the montage technique, I will also discuss BuГ±uel's use of camerawork like the long shots used
throughout the film, music, acting style, costume (like having the female character read a book in which the same outfit is seen that the male character
is wearing), editing techniques such as point of view shots, and, finally, dream and fantasy sequence.
To begin, BuГ±uel uses montage editing in order to piece together the story he and Salvador Dali have created. His use of montage is ... Show more

R.L Rutsky and Jeffery Geiger, editors of "Film Analysis: A Norton Reader", stated that, " BuГ±uel conflates succession and simultaneity (evolution
and continuity) by having images paradoxically comingle and follow each other in succession." The short film contains a total of five intertitles. After
each intertitle, a new segment ensues. Each segment that follows contains surreal images. Starting with the first intertitle, which translates to "Once
upon a time," the male character is seen sharpening his razor, then he steps out onto the balcony to look up at the sky where there is a full moon with
sharp like clouds approaching. We then see what the audience can assume is a woman sitting down on the same balcony, although it is never clearly
stated if she is sitting or not. The male character then grabs his razor and slits her eye just as the sharp like clouds pass in front of the moon. With this
segment, I think what the director is trying to get

Analysis Of Gertrude Stein 's ' I Ain 't No Oxford '
With so many rules in the English language, it is easy for one to wonder how they were created. The dictionary, for example, was only created a few
hundred years ago by people who thought that was how language was supposed to be. Many artists have had the mission to go forward and break
these "rules." Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons, bill bissett's "text bites," and John Agard's "I Ain't No Oxford Don" question rules of grammar and
synaptic normality. By the way, these poems disrupt words, use non–standard prose, and have ambiguous interpretations they break the rules of
grammar and disrupt the formal laws of language, inducing new ways of about the how one produces meaning. Gertrude Stein was not always known
as a writer. She became... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A line just distinguishes it" (Stein, p.6). While asking what is the flattering length she ends up defining it by a line. A line can only be defined by
a contour or outline. It cannot be defined by actual matter. Therefore, the serene length ends up being defined by not being able to be defined.
This gives readers an unending openness to interpretation and perspective. In Gertrude Stein's "Water Raining" she leaves the reader without any
certainty. Stein writes "Water is astonishing and difficult altogether makes a meadow and a stroke" (Stein, p. 10). Without the use of punctuation,
the reader is able to interrupt the poem according to how one sees fit. Placing a period after "astonishing" (Stein, p. 10) makes it so the meadow
and stroke are strenuous on their own. A period after "altogether" (Stein, p. 10) leave the meadow and stroke to come as an aftermath from the
water. While a period after "meadow" (Stein, p. 10) gives serenity a meadow will come from water but, a stroke is an afterthought. Stein was not
the only one to use visual art to make literature. bill bissett as a visual artist and writer links his worlds together. At first glance, bill bissett's poetry
seems to be hard to understand, nonsensical, and almost a fallacy. bissett's use of synecdoche pushes the reader to reexamine how one reads a poem
in the first place. The poem flows from whole to part. Particularly in "text bites" the words come across

Film Analysis :'samson ( Hwv 57 )
Samson (HWV 57) is a three–act oratorio by George Frideric Handel. It was the first oratorio he wrote after the Messiah. The oratorio deals with the
biblical figure Samson and it is also based on "Samson Agonistes" by John Milton. The aria happens at the end of the Oratorio to serve as a happy
ending with its joyous flare. The instrumentation has a trumpet doubling the voice throughout the piece as it is eluded in the text of Angel–trumpets.
Le Nozze di Figaro is one of Mozart's most popular operas, with the libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. Act 2 begins in the bedroom of Countess
Rosina Almaviva, where she laments her husband's perceived infidelity with Susana, her maid, in the aria "Porgi Amour".

This example of lieder is a great example of Romantic poetry dealing with nature and the human condition with emotion. The poetry is by poet Ludwig
Heinrich Christoph Hölty.
Clara Schumann paved the way for women composers and was a finer musician than many of her contemporaries. Clara Schumann was renowned in
her time, for her outstanding piano skills and her performances as a child prodigy. She composed "Lorelei" in 1843; it is towards the end of her
lieder output from the years 1831 to 1853. The text is by German Poet Heinrich Heine, a favorite author among Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert.
"Die Lorelei" is one of his most popular poems and was set to music by other composers, but Clara's musical setting has been lovingly referred to as the
'Female equivalent to "Der Erlkönig."
Hugo Wolf was another nineteenth–century composer who specialized in lieder. He wrote hundreds of lieder and composed other works, including two
operas. His style is linked to the Second Viennese School of Arnold Schoenberg, Alan Berg, and Anton Webern. Wolf's lieder continually have grand
moments of expressiveness. His lieder and compositions have complex harmonic motions; Verschwiegene Liebe especially is harmonically thick all
while maintaining its sweetness.
Richard Strauss was a leading German composer that spanned the late nineteenth century into the twentieth century. He is best known for his numerous
operas, like Salome and Der

Roman Polanski's Abuse In The Pianist
When you hear Roman Polanski's name, what do you think of? Rosemary's Baby? The Pianist? What about Woody Allen? Do you think about
Annie Hall, or maybe Hannah and Her Sisters? You probably know who Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando and Michael Fassbender. For members of
the Academy of Motion Pictures, these names may ring some bells for their work as directors or actors, and it's probably for their work in the film
industry. For members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, you may recognize these names from interviewing them or writing about their
work. They all have something in common that I find quite alarming: They have been accused of abuse or rape. Whether you work behind the scenes

We knew all about Winona Ryder's arrest and we knew all about Robert Downey Jr.'s struggle with drug addiction. So, if other celebrities can be
thought of by their crimes in addition to their work, why is it that so many cases of rape and abuse seem to be swept under the rug by the film
industry and the press? The film industry continues to work and award people like Michael Fassbender (who has two Academy Award and five
Golden Globe nominations under his belt), even though they may have threw their girlfriend and dragged her alongside a car when he was drunk,
causing a swollen ankle, a burst ovarian cyst, a broken nose, and a blown out knee cap. A victim, like Amber Heard, can have photographic evidence,
witnesses, and a video of Johnny Depp abusing her, and Johnny Depp can still have five upcoming projects. As the public realize that your industry

Counterculture In Vietnam War
When the term "counterculture" is brought up, people tend to think of the phenomenon that started in the early sixties consisting of people quitting
their jobs to live in communion and protest what were then contentious social rights issues together, such as the Civil Rights Movement and the
Vietnam War. Shortly after the culmination of the counterculture, several significant acts of progress were made, such as the Voters Rights Act, to curb
the influence of racial segregation within America, which resulted in the end of the movement shortly thereafter. By 1973, theUnited States withdrew
its troops from Vietnam, and with little remaining to unify the remnants of those still involved with the counterculture, they soon saw their own

These include the recreational use of drugs, environmentalism, feminism, and perhaps most notably, the same opposition to war shared by many today
that was observed at the height of the movement. During his observation of the American opposition to the Iraq War, Antonius Robben noted that those
who were involved in the counterculture "have grown children (and grandchildren) who carry forth their tradition locally, and, dispersed, elsewhere"
(15). This influence also extended towards those not related to protesters of the Vietnam War, and while the known factors of the invasion of Iraq can
be said to already be a strong basis for the opposition's argument, with or without the inclusion of any prior history on any war, the United States past
involvement in the Vietnam War, and the massive protests held during the sixties and seventies have had a certain influence on every American
military conflict since then. Statistical embassies showed a noted rise in opposition towards involvement in Iraq compared to previous military
conflicts even at its onset

Bernado Bertolucci's Last Tango In Paris
In Bernado Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris, a recent widower, Paul (Marlon Brando) and a younger woman, Jeanne (Maria Schieder) pursue a
passionate love affair in which they don't reveal each other's names. Although the affair initially seems like casual sex, it starts to deeply affect them
as Paul copes with the death of his wife, Rose, and Jeanne prepares to marry her fiancГ©, Tom (Jean–Pierre LeГ¤ud), a film director making a
documentary about her. Through a painful grieving process, Paul learns to trust and fall in love again. This seemingly pleasant change in Paul is
ultimately his demise, as Jeanne fatally shoots him in the chest. Bertolucci illustrates Paul's socio–psychological makeup from life to death by
incorporating mise–en scene, nondiegetic elements, dark lighting, abrupt soundtrack, foils and doubles, and repeated motifs. Paul is an extremely
distant individual, so the narrative presents parts of Paul's past and present with the use of nondiegetic elements and the unraveling motif. When Paul
is first introduced, he is under a train holding his ears screaming "F***ing God!" indicating he is in a lot of pain. Later Paul and a maid are cleaning
up Rose's blood in the bathroom. When Paul gazes out the window, he sees a woman sewing near her lover's crotch as he plays the saxophone. This...

Marcel serves as Paul's double. Bertolucci suggests this when Marcel and Paul are wearing the same plaid robe and have the same haircut when
Paul visits Marcel's apartment . Also, only the right side of Marcel's face is lit up and only the left side of Paul's face is visible, indicating that their
two half faces compose the same person. Fed up with Marcel's egotism, Paul walks out of the apartment and says, "I don't know what she ever saw in
you." Seeing as Marcel is Paul's double, this line expresses Paul's self hatred and guilt of his crumbled marriage. (Need a nice witty concluding

The Ancient Empires Are The Maya, Aztec And Inca
The three ancient empires are the Maya, Aztec and Inca. Indigenous had no resistance to smallpox and measles. Mulattos have mixed African and
Iberian ancestry. Mestizos are people with mixed ancestry, specifically Amerindian and Spanish ancestry. Indigenous traditions, European
–derived
music, and African–inspired musical activity make up the music of Central America, South America, and Mexico. African influence is evident in
African secular and religious practices, in instruments modeled after African instruments, and in the use of musical traits associated with Africa's ethnic
groups. Amazonian tribes can differ in their language, dress, belief system, and kinship practices. The KayapГі–Xikrin are from the rainforests of
Brazil. Men and women usually sing separately. Vocal pulsation is a slight periodic volume amplification. Takak
–nhiok is a KayapГі–Xikrin naming
ritual that occurs in five stages over five years. In each stage, the initiates gain new knowledge about practices and activities in their community. The
two official languages of Peru are Spanish and Quechua. The Inca Empire reached its peak in the last decades of the 1400s. The two centers of power
are located in Cusco and Machu Picchu. In 1572, Spanish conquistadors beheaded the last Inca emperor, TГєpac Amaru. Roman Catholicism is the
most prominent religion in Peru. Common among Andean and Peruvian indigenous populations, the siku is a panpipe made of cylindrical reeds of
different lengths tied together.

Why Do Pornographic Films Suck? Essay
Watching a porn film side–by–side with a Bresson film is an instructive exercise. In both, actors deliver their lines in a wooden way; in both,
characters do things that are regarded as morally suspect without remorse or elaborate justification; and both are more episodic than narrative.

"Why Do Porn Films Suck?"
From Hard Core Art to Pornography and Back
In this paper I inquire about the distinctions between the genres of hard core art cinema and pornography. Given that the definitions of both
pornography and hard core art cinema are rather contentious and the dividing line between these genres is quite blurry, this curious question is of
importance. In this paper I attempt to examine where and why this dividing line is usually drawn. In order to do this, I take as examples two
controversial films – Une Vraie Jeune Fille by Catherine Breillat (filmed in 1975 but never shown until 1999) and Pretty Baby by Louis Malle (filmed
in 1978) – and trace critics ' responses to them in order to compare different reviews and opinions, especially on the issue of sex scenes and nudity
presented in the films. I chose Une Vraie Jeune Fille because this film contains close ups of genitalis and scenes of unsimulated sex that were deemed
obscene at a time. By contrast, Pretty Baby has been deemed offensive and obscene not because of sex scenes but because it contains nude depictions
of a twelve–year–old actress. This paper is structured in such a way

Essay on The Music of Puerto Rico
Music, in the history of Puerto Rico, has played a role of great significance as a means of cultural expression. The five centuries of musical activity
shows that Puerto Ricans have created, developed and promoted a variety of genres ranging from folk music, concert music and new genres. The
Puerto Rican music and native musicians have shaped and enriched the identity of the Puerto Rican people and their roots.
Puerto Rican music was the ultimate expression of the "Areito" (indigenous artistic traditions) combined in a unitary fashion, oral narrative, dance and
music. By the end of the fifteenth century, the Taino Indians had already developed musical instruments used in their ceremonies, religious rituals and
daily life. Some of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Slaves who arrived on our shores were characterized by a strong attachment to their traditions and ancestral beliefs, intimately linked to their dances and
music. Among the African groups that influence ethnic and cultural formation of the island are the Ashanti and Fante of Ghana, Carabalis southern
shore of the Niger River, the Congos and Equatorial Africa from the late eighteenth century until the middle nineteenth century and the Yoruba of West
Africa.
Africans cultivated their traditions and dances in several coastal towns and municipalities that are currently Loiza, Guayama, Ponce, CataГ±o. The
current African music has been preserved in the instruments that are still heard in the characteristic method of executing them, and in some songs,
rhythms and dances that have been preserved by oral tradition. Around the eighteenth century, one of the factors that caused considerable impact on the
formation of the Island Music, was the arrival of a group of musicians with a Spanish military regiment in 1765. The activity of these bands, which
included public concerts and the music of nature based, religious and social activities, along with traditional festivals at the center of town squares,
prosecutes a favorable environment for musical development.
By the end of the eighteenth century, popular music evolved by converging sectors of the church, community, urban and rural society emerging beyond
the capital, San Juan. During the eighteenth

Entertainment In The 1920's
After World War One, major changes in American culture occurred, paving the way for modern day entertainment. The 1920s brought a decrease in
the work week, and nearly a 30 percent increase in wages. Extra money called for extra activities to feel up the abundance of time given to the
American population. This is why entertainment, between 1919 and 1929, collected almost 4 billion dollars. Choices were not limited due to the fact
that several forms of mass entertainment emerged such as, the radio, "Talkies", spectator sports, the phonograph, and many other things that had never
been seen before. Sales in music genres such as "Hillbilly" music, and jazz skyrocketed, making record players and other musical devices hit an
all–time high. This decade is also recognized for the great number of musicians, writers, and artists who produced work that was innovative and
creative beyond belief. Most entertainment today can be traced back to its start in the "Roaring twenties" (Digital History 1). ... Show more content on

Strategic Action Disney On Consumer Focused Initiative
Which strategic action disney took in terms of consumer focused initiative? Walt Disney is a well known brand known all over the world. It
launched a theme park, Disneyland, in Hong Kong in 2005 which was the smallest of the five already existing disneylands in different parts of the
world. It was started mainly to cater the Hong Kong people as the chinese market is rapidly growing and it was a good and profitable move to open up
disneyland in Hong Kong. The strategy which Disney adopted is highly diversify. The company diversified its brand into different businesses like
theme parks, television networks, hotels, books and toys for children, animated and motion films etc. Soon it erupted as a big and well known brand in
the entertainment industry. The company's strategy is to produce qualitative goods and services and engaging modern technology with their services
and expand their brand globally. In 1993 disney opened a theme park in Japan which was very successful. After its huge success the next one was at
Paris in 1992. Disney was an American brand and entering into non american markets was not easy for them because of many cultural differences.
They wanted to enter european market but for entering non american european markets the management understood the fact that they need to
understand the cultural differences first. To cater the european french market, the company restructured its management completely so that they can
effectively enter the french market.

Ernest Hemingway's Short Story 'Up in Michigan': A Review
Introduction The short story Up in Michigan is one of Hemingway's earliest works, believed to be one of the earliest works of Hemingway after he
arrived in Paris in December of 1921 (Oliver 14). The story was first published in 1923 in Three Stories and Ten Poems. As with most first works some
scholars would argue all first works the story is believed to be derivative. The characters seem to have been plucked from Hemingway's childhood
(Svoboda and Waldmeir 63). A boyhood friend of Hemingway's was named Wesley Dilworth and his parents were named Jim and Liz Dilworth
(Comley and Scholes 29). Scholarly reviews led to the discovery of pre–publication typescripts of Up in Michigan. Interestingly, a pre–publication
version of the story begins: "Wesley Dilworth got the dimple in his chin from his mother. Her name had been Liz Buell. Jim Dilworth married her
when he came to Horton's Bay from Canada and bought the mill with A. J. Stroud" (KL/EH 800, 1, as cited in Johnson). From this excised
paragraph, readers are able to see how Hemingway invented the fictionalized story from the bit of that he drew from his early years (Benson).
Scholars and critics often use this short story as a jumping off point when exploring the development of Hemingway's approach to writing and his
narrative style. The characters, Jim and Liz, are like many of Hemingway's characters in that they are disinclined to philosophize, are prone to action,
learn from experience, and avoid abstract

Moulin Rouge Essay
Moulin Rouge!
"The show will be a magnificent, opulent, tremendous, stupendous, gargantuan bedazzlement. A sensual ravishment. It will be spectacular, spectacular.
No words in the vernacular can describe this great event, you'll be dumb with wonderment... And on top of your fee, you'll be involved
artistically."
It is with these words that Harold Zidler–the owner of the titular nightclub in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge!– describes a theatre play
to his financier, and at the same time, fittingly describes not only the key features of Moulin Rouge!, but also the defining characteristics of
Luhrmann's signature genre, 'Red Curtain Cinema', to the audience of the film. The term, coined by the director himself, is distinguished by films that
follow a simple, recognisable narrative set in a world of 'heightened reality': Luhrmann describes the central parameters as a "simple, even naГЇve story
based on a primary myth...set in a heightened interpretation of a world that is at once familiar yet distant and exotic". The use of music, set,
costumes, as well as more technical features such as rapid cuts and editing are employed to make the simple story more dramatic, amplifying the
movie experience to a degree that viewers are made wholly aware of the artistry and technology involved. In contrast to naturalistic cinematography
which typically aims to mimic reality as if the film could genuinely be taking place somewhere in the world, Red Curtain films keep the audience

Oaths Euphemisms
A euphemism is the substitution of an agreeable or less offensive expression in place of one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant to the
listener;[1] or in the case of doublespeak, to make it less troublesome for the speaker.[citation needed] It also may be a substitution of a description of
something or someone rather than the name, to avoid revealing secret, holy, or sacred names to the uninitiated, or to obscure the identity of the subject
of a conversation from potential eavesdroppers. Some euphemisms are intended to be funny.

The common names of illicit drugs, and the plants used to obtain them, often undergo a process similar to taboo deformation, because new terms are
devised in order to discuss them secretly in the presence of others. This process often occurs in English (e.g. speed or crank for meth). It occurs even
more in Spanish, e.g. the deformation of names for cannabis: mota (lit., "something which moves" on the black market), replacing grifa (lit.,
"something coarse to the touch"), replacing marihuana (a female personal name, MarГa Juana), replacing caГ±amo (the original Spanish name for the
plant, derived from the Latin genus name Cannabis). All four of these names are still used in various parts of the Hispanophone world, although
caГ±amo ironically has the least underworld connotation, and is often used to describe industrial hemp, or legitimate medically–prescribed cannabis.
[edit] The "Euphemism Treadmill"
Euphemisms often evolve over time into taboo words themselves, through a process described by W.V.O. Quine, and more recently dubbed the
"euphemism treadmill" by Steven Pinker. (cf. Gresham's Law in economics). This is the well–known linguistic process known as pejoration.
Words originally intended as euphemisms may lose their euphemistic value, acquiring the negative connotations of

Last Tango in Paris (1972) Sex, suicide and butter; this film is anything but a romantic love story. Last Tango In Paris is an intellectual sexual drama
that bases itself on the sexual union of two very different people in the bohemian setting of Paris during the post–sexual liberation era of the 1970s.
Marlon Brando plays a troubled middle aged American, Paul, who rents an apartment with an attractive and confident Parisian, Jeanne (Maria
Schneider). It is in this room that the two pursue a sordid affair where Paul insists that neither of them know each others names or backstory. The dirty,
empty and bleak apartment and the musty mattress in the middle of the living room represents the lives of both Paul and Jeanne. For these people sex
is the perfect distraction from the real world.
Certainly the most interesting of characters; it is through sex with a stranger in which Paul can gain control and escape the pain of his wife's suicide –

Effects Of World War One On Europe
Kegan Navarre Mrs.Martinez ELA IV 4th Hour May 2, 2016 The Effects of World War One on Europe In the early twentieth century, the most
powerful nations in the world were preparing for war with a heightened sense of national pride. Germany, eager to go to war, created arguably the
greatest military in the world at the time. This heightened militarism in Germany had two major reactions from other world powers. The first was
to build up their respective militaries in order to prepare for a war if it became necessary. The second was to create a system of alliances in case they
were attacked. The series of alliances led to the formation of two powerful groups. The first was known as the "Central Powers" consisting of
Germany, Bulgaria, Austria–Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. The second was the "Allied Powers" which included England, France, Russia, and
Italy. Then on June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. After the assassination, Austria
– Hungary
declared war on Serbia. The series of alliances created prior to the assassination led to many European countries declaring war on one another in
order to protect their allies. Because of imperialism of Africa in the ninteenth century and a growing US involvement in European affairs, the war
spread throughout the entire world. The Great War, later named World War One would go on for four long years with roughly twenty million
casualties before a cease fire in 1918. On June 28, 1919

Essay about Treatment of Female Sexuality in Last Tango in...
Unrestrained female sexuality in popular media is regarded as something of a taboo. As a society, we are not used to the pleasure of women being
portrayed on screen, despite our supposedly 'equal' society. Much of this is the inflection of sexism and the patriarchy, placed upon the minds of the
masses, influencing the internalized discomfort of female sexuality. This, of course, does not apply towards male sexuality. Male sexuality is
unrelenting and respected, even revered. These concepts of unrestrained sexuality, equal pleasure and lack of censoring have leached into one of the
major sources of media in our society, which is the all encompassing film. Film acts as a medium for art, and for information. We are entertained, as

In Italian Cinema, through exploring the films viewed through the semester, some are more on point with the treatment of female sexuality.
These often stand out, for various reasons, but most frequently due to lots of sex and sexual themes within the film. For discussion of the
treatment of female sexuality in Italian film are is one film. This film is the iconic film, Last Tango in Paris, or Ultimo tango a Parigi. This film
has a very interesting storyline, and exploration of character dynamics, as well as interesting history. But most importantly, this film explores
female sexuality and sexual power structures in a unique way. The treatment of female sexuality in Italian film also gives us a historical
dialectism because we are exposed to the treatment and regard of women at that particular point in history, both when the film took place as well
as when the film was created. To begin, the treatment of female sexuality in the masterpiece of a film, Last Tango in Paris. Last Tango in Paris, or
Ultimo tango a Parigi, was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci in 1972. Starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider, it is a tragic film at it's core, yet
still an epic emotional experience. The fusion of Italian, French, and Western film is an impressive display, yet it still retains the beauty and
underlying tragedy of classic Italian cinema. Bertolucci is certainly a master of Italian cinema, and Last Tango in Paris is a beautiful, erotic display

The Practice Of Method Acting Has Become No Less Than A...
The practice of method acting has become no less than a cultural phenomenon during the last eighty or so years. The idea of an actor throwing himself
so far into a role that character and man become one intrigues and horrifies most. Of course, there is more to it than that. The technique of method
acting became prominent in the mid–twentieth century thanks to teachers like Lee Strasberg of the Actors Studio in New York. In essence, the method
involves a search for truth in a role, wherein the actor or actress recalls emotions or reactions from their own life to inform and identify with the
character. While this approach has produced no doubt some of the best performances of the modern age, there are numerous drawbacks. When an actor

His system, introduced in the late 1890s and early 1900s, relied on emotional memory and a search for inner truth to create great performances.
Stanislavski's original system "require[d] that an actor recreate an event from the distant past in order to regenerate the 'feelings' experienced at that
time. These feelings thus regenerated are then used in the current acting situation in order to fill out the role with 'human depth and personal
involvement'. The necessity of the event being from the distant rather than recent past is because Stanislavski felt (at the time) that time distilled events
and feelings, acting as a 'splendid filter for remembered feelings.'" (Sawoski 19.) Interestingly, Stanislavski later changed his teachings to have a focus
on physical actions, revolving around the idea that internal experiences manifest in physical expression. But, before he changed his tune, two of his
students from his First Studio, Ri chard Boleslavsky and Maria Ouspenskaya, immigrated to the United States and began teaching the Stanislavski
"Method" to American students at the American Laboratory Theatre in 1925. One of their students, Lee Strasberg, later used Stanislavski's theory of
Emotional Memory to teach Affective Memory at the Actor's Studio, even though Stanislavski himself had long since rejected those original ideas.
While Stanislavski may have originated the techniques of

Pornography In The Media
Pornography is the portrayal of sexual subject matter for the purpose of sexual arousal. Pornography may be presented in a variety of media, including
books, magazines, postcards, photographs, sculpture, drawing, painting, animation, sound recording, writing, film, video, and video games. The term
applies to the depiction of the act rather than the act itself, and so does not include live exhibitions like sex shows and striptease. The primary subjects
of present–day pornographic depictions are pornographic models, who pose for still photographs, and pornographic actors or porn stars, who perform
in pornographic films. If dramatic skills are not involved, a performer in a porn film may also be called a model.

There is also some evidence that pornography can be used to treat voyeurism.
Etymology
The word is similar to the Modern Greek ПЂОїПЃОЅОїОіПЃО±П†ОЇО±, which derives from the Greek words ПЂПЊПЃОЅО·, and
ОіПЃО¬П†ОµО№ОЅ, and the suffix –ОЇО±, thus meaning "a written description or illustration of prostitutes or prostitution". No date is known for
the first use of the word in Greek; the earliest attested, most related word one could find in Greek, is, pornographos, i.e. "someone writing about
harlots", in the Deipnosophists of Athenaeus. The Modern Greek word pornographia is a translation of the French pornographie.
"Pornographie" was in use in the French language during the 1800s. The word did not enter the English language as the familiar word until 1857 or as
a French import in New Orleans in 1842.
Pornography is often abbreviated to porn or porno in informal language.
History
Depictions of a sexual nature are older than civilization as depictions such as the venus figurines and rock art have existed since prehistoric times.
When large–scale excavations of Pompeii were undertaken in the 1860s, much of the erotic art of the Romans came to light, shocking the Victorians
who saw themselves as the intellectual heirs of the Roman Empire. They did not know what to do with the frank depictions of sexuality and
endeavored to hide them away from everyone but upper–class scholars. The moveable objects were locked away in the

Porn and Censorship
Pornography and Censorship
Should the government be allowed to legitimately prohibit citizens from publishing or viewing pornography, or would this be an unjustified violation
of basic freedoms?
Traditionally, liberals defended the freedom of consenting adults to publish and consume pornography in private from moral and religious
conservatives who wanted pornography banned for its obscenity, its corrupting impact on consumers and its corrosive effect on traditional family and
religious values. But, in more recent times, the pornography debate has taken on a somewhat new and surprising shape. Some feminists have found
themselves allied with their traditional conservative foes in calling on the state to regulate or prohibit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Other sexually explicit representations depict acts of violent coercion: people being bound, whipped, beaten, tortured, penetrated by objects, mutilated,
raped and even killed. Some sexually explicit material may be degrading, without necessarily being overtly violent. This material depicts people (most
often women) in positions of servility and subordination in their sexual relations with others, or engaged in sexual acts that many people would regard
as humiliating. Some sexually explicit material involves or depicts children. Some portrays bestiality and necrophilia; and so on.
On the first definition of pornography as sexually explicit material, all such material would count as pornography, insofar as it is sexually explicit. But
this simple definition is not quite right. Anatomy textbooks for medical students are sexually explicit–they depict exposed genitalia, for example–but
are rarely, if ever, viewed as pornography. Sexual explicitness may be a necessary condition for material to count as pornographic, but it does not seem
to be sufficient. So something needs to be added to the simple definition. What else might be required?
Here is a second definition. Pornography is sexually explicit material (verbal or pictorial) that is primarily designed to produce sexual arousal in
viewers. This definition is better: it deals with the problem of anatomy textbooks and the like. Indeed, this

Theme Of Power In Dracula
First of all, before analysing the theme, it is necessary to clarify the notion of "dynamic of power". In fact, this denotes the dialectic interaction
between the subject possessing the power and the object which is influenced by this power. In literature, this liaison is expressed by the relations
between a master and a slave. For instance, the Russian writers Dostoevsky and Tolstoy explored the theme of the relations between a master and a
slave, an oppressor and an oppressed in their works. Since this theme has stirred the imagination of many writers, it is not surprising that the possibility
to expose this type of relations has attracted the filmmakers for the decades.
It is important to point out that such creative movement as German Expressionism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dracula in this film refers more to the Sympathetic Cycle (1987 – present) by the classification of Tim Kane. The films of this cycle show thevampire
with more sympathetic qualities, with thoughts, feelings, fears, and dreams. The sympathetic vampires of the recent films have developed into
misunderstood, tortured romantic figures or even ultimate romantic alpha–hero. Coppola's Dracula seems to be on the border of the Erotic and
Sympathetic cycles. Seduction and allure are still inherent to him, as well as his victims are ready to sacrifice, expecting gratification from the
master. The scenes of bite do not have sexual hints, they speak directly of sex. For example, this is the scene when Jonathan is attacked by the
Dracula's brides, who lick and kiss him before biting, and the victim endures pain, fear and sensual pleasure. When Dracula, transformed into a wolf,
attacks Lucy, he physically copulates with her. And again, we see that these relations develop with the consent of the victim as the attack arouses Lucy,
and she anticipates the vampire's visits. So, overall, each participant of the vampire–victim's relationship is not equal. One is superior (stronger, with a
hypnotic stare and other super–abilities, moreover, he is immortal) and another is subordinate (just a human–being, fragile and helpless). Nevertheless,
this inequality, the power, that a vampire, a master possesses and victim's eagerness to obey make these relations tempting for

Movie acting is different than stage acting because they have to be prepared to cut scenes out and from couple different angles and voice directly
into the camera. The actors only learn the lines from the scene they are doing at the time instead of knowing them all. It is also not shot in the
order it is seen in because they don't want to be going back and forth from location to location, so they shoot all the scenes that is needed at a
certain location. They also have to take more than one shot per scene because maybe they want different angles or someone may have messed up. A
perfect example of movie vs. stage acting is the scene where Stanley yells out STELLA! Because he harmed her so she left with Eunice and he goes
after her to apologize but has to get her attention by screaming her name out until she came out to talk to him. This scene must have been much easier
for the film because the director and actors don't have to worry about messing up they can just retake a scene and they can adjust it to their desire.
While stage acting the actors have to deal with an audience watching their every move and if they mess up they don't have another chance. Maybe the
actor didn't project their voice enough for everyone to hear them. They also might lose their voice from the very intense screaming. As well as
forgetting a line on stage and embarrassing

The Qualities Of Brando 's Acting
Both authors examined the qualities of Brando's acting that made his acting memorable. Neves investigated Brando's acting style in the 1954 film On
The Waterfront. Neves delved into how Brando's method acting approach strengthened his role and focused on the psychological complexity Brando
gave to the character. Whereas Krasner wrote about Brando's role in the 1951 film A Streetcar Named Desire and explored specific details in his
acting technique, such as his usage of mumbling and his rebellious wardrobe choices. Neves' points proved to be the strongest, with his extremely
in–depth analysis and use of psychology to explain Brando's character's actions. In the future, historians could analyze how Brando's acting improved
and became more memorable as he became older. Altogether, there were many reasons for Brando's memorability, as shown by Neves' arguments that
the method style enhanced his acting, and as shown in Krasner's arguments that precise details in his acting made him memorable, and further
information on his memorability could be gained by studying how his acting became better over time.
Neves addressed the question of Brando's memorability by examining his acting in the 1954 movie On The Waterfront. Neves uses hearings by Elia
Kazan (director of On the Waterfront) by the House Committee of Un–American Activities as a primary source. This source was useful because it
allowed Neves to gain information on the film's background, in the director's own words.

Advantages Of Travelling Alone
On the whole, as a Westerner (and usually comparably rich, even as an YBP) you can make all the smart choices about transport. You will never
have to take a flight with the airline that has the worst safety record on that continent. You will never have to get into a taxi where the limping car has
clearly never been serviced and where the driver smells strongly of whisky. You are traveling for pleasure and can always say no.
But happily, such experiences are few and far between. We may all come from different countries, but on the whole, we all still want to live well and
safely. Undoubtedly, life can feel more cheap in some countries than others, but if you plan ahead and choose to take the smart options, you can enjoy

However, there are some considerations to bear in mind before jetting off abroad.
Here's a mixture of pros and cons to bear in mind when considering study abroad (here's a hint though – I believe that the PROS totally outweigh the
CONS, naturally!):
PRO – You Can Experience a Foreign Culture
There is nothing like having your own experience of travel to feel like you are really living. It is all very well to admire the plains of South Africa
in a film, or to climb Amazonian waterfalls in your imagination when you read a book, but there really is nothing like being there in person. Travel
can surprise all your senses, often all at once, and it can be a real thrill to immerse yourself in the customs and culture of other people.
PRO – Learn A New Language
If you have some basic Spanish, why not enhance it with a few months in Barcelona? Or hone your French in Paris, Mauritius or Martinique? There
are endless opportunities for improving a language or learning a new one from scratch. Just remember – there is no better way to learn a language well
than by chatting to locals every day. You will pick up authentic words, gain fluency and improve your confidence– so dive

Discuss The Minority Presence In Contemporary British Art...

  • 1. Discuss the Minority Presence in Contemporary British Art... Minority Presence in Contemporary British Art "Highly visible yet evasively mute." Art critic Kobena Mercer, comments on the current position of African and Asian artists in Contemporary British Art, when he suggests that minority artists are seen and not heard. This oxymoronic position derives from a long historical legacy of European colonization and the emphasis on 'racial inferiority' and 'otherness.' On the one hand, British art is progressive, allowing some minority art in the general art world. Yet on the other hand minority art is still marginalized by the preferential treatment given to white artists. There is a strong degree of accuracy in Mercer's statement because while minority art can now be 'seen,' the 'voice' is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The yBa movement is said to establish new ideas of Britishness in a postmodern world. Yet, Mercer goes so far as to say that the movement is in part a reaction to the attempt to globalize the British art world: "At this stage it is precisely the discrepancy between parochial yBa inwardness and the art world internatialism that obliges us to interrogate the ideology of New British Art as a defensive, and, above all, regressive response to the bewildering effects of globalization" The 'important art' (as seen by Saatchi and The Tate) returns to a concern with British identity that fails to comment on how diversity has changed that identity. By turning inward as a reaction to globalization, British art regresses and fuels a return to 'white dominance.' As a result, multicultural art lacking Western referents become suppressed. While there are movements to prevent this subordination of multiculturalism, their range of influence is limited. The Institute of International Visual Arts (inIva) was founded in 1994 and its major goal is to bring artists from 'culturally–diverse backgrounds' to the attention of mainstream British culture. However, while their success has been praised on a global level, locally they are largely overlooked. The major art insitutions refuse to recognize artists whose thematic concentration does not ... • 2. Censorship Of The Film Industry Restriction of expression in the film industry is in the form of censorship, which in the UK was set up in 1912 as the British Board of Film Censorship (BBFC) by the film industry as a self–regulatory body charging the film industry for the service. The local councils in the UK usually accepted these classifications. This is a view of the censorship laws and in particular the era of the 'video nasty' and how it slipped through the film censorship net. Looking back to the 1930's, an early example of government censorship in entertainment was at the famous 'Windmill' theatre, which opened in London 1931 (Figure 1). In order to avoid closure, the newly appointed manger, Vivian Van Damm decided to incorporate nude females in the theatre performances. These were known as the 'Windmill girls' and were presented as 'tableaux viviants' (meaning living picture).. The ruling was that 'if you move, it's rude' (Wikipedia.) The performances evaded the censorship law in different ways; one was the fan dance, where the girls would dance nude while covering themselves with the fans but at the end of the performance would stand completely still and remove the fans. Another form of evasion was moving props while the girls stood motionless such as a still nude girl holding a spinning rope.. This idea of sidestepping censorship laws was something that would have a big influence on censorship of films in the future. Freaks (1932) created by Tod Browning was not received as well as his ... • 3. Un Chien Andalou Un Chien Andalou In Un Chien Andalou (1929), Luis BuГ±uel uses montage editing to put together a series of surreal images to create what the audience can interpret as a love story. The theme being expressed in Un Chien Andalou is that love is something that is irrational, unexplainable, and considering the fact that it is a surrealist film, love is surreal. Along with the montage technique, I will also discuss BuГ±uel's use of camerawork like the long shots used throughout the film, music, acting style, costume (like having the female character read a book in which the same outfit is seen that the male character is wearing), editing techniques such as point of view shots, and, finally, dream and fantasy sequence. To begin, BuГ±uel uses montage editing in order to piece together the story he and Salvador Dali have created. His use of montage is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... R.L Rutsky and Jeffery Geiger, editors of "Film Analysis: A Norton Reader", stated that, " BuГ±uel conflates succession and simultaneity (evolution and continuity) by having images paradoxically comingle and follow each other in succession." The short film contains a total of five intertitles. After each intertitle, a new segment ensues. Each segment that follows contains surreal images. Starting with the first intertitle, which translates to "Once upon a time," the male character is seen sharpening his razor, then he steps out onto the balcony to look up at the sky where there is a full moon with sharp like clouds approaching. We then see what the audience can assume is a woman sitting down on the same balcony, although it is never clearly stated if she is sitting or not. The male character then grabs his razor and slits her eye just as the sharp like clouds pass in front of the moon. With this segment, I think what the director is trying to get ... • 4. Analysis Of Gertrude Stein 's ' I Ain 't No Oxford ' With so many rules in the English language, it is easy for one to wonder how they were created. The dictionary, for example, was only created a few hundred years ago by people who thought that was how language was supposed to be. Many artists have had the mission to go forward and break these "rules." Gertrude Stein's Tender Buttons, bill bissett's "text bites," and John Agard's "I Ain't No Oxford Don" question rules of grammar and synaptic normality. By the way, these poems disrupt words, use non–standard prose, and have ambiguous interpretations they break the rules of grammar and disrupt the formal laws of language, inducing new ways of about the how one produces meaning. Gertrude Stein was not always known as a writer. She became... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A line just distinguishes it" (Stein, p.6). While asking what is the flattering length she ends up defining it by a line. A line can only be defined by a contour or outline. It cannot be defined by actual matter. Therefore, the serene length ends up being defined by not being able to be defined. This gives readers an unending openness to interpretation and perspective. In Gertrude Stein's "Water Raining" she leaves the reader without any certainty. Stein writes "Water is astonishing and difficult altogether makes a meadow and a stroke" (Stein, p. 10). Without the use of punctuation, the reader is able to interrupt the poem according to how one sees fit. Placing a period after "astonishing" (Stein, p. 10) makes it so the meadow and stroke are strenuous on their own. A period after "altogether" (Stein, p. 10) leave the meadow and stroke to come as an aftermath from the water. While a period after "meadow" (Stein, p. 10) gives serenity a meadow will come from water but, a stroke is an afterthought. Stein was not the only one to use visual art to make literature. bill bissett as a visual artist and writer links his worlds together. At first glance, bill bissett's poetry seems to be hard to understand, nonsensical, and almost a fallacy. bissett's use of synecdoche pushes the reader to reexamine how one reads a poem in the first place. The poem flows from whole to part. Particularly in "text bites" the words come across ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Film Analysis :'samson ( Hwv 57 ) Samson (HWV 57) is a three–act oratorio by George Frideric Handel. It was the first oratorio he wrote after the Messiah. The oratorio deals with the biblical figure Samson and it is also based on "Samson Agonistes" by John Milton. The aria happens at the end of the Oratorio to serve as a happy ending with its joyous flare. The instrumentation has a trumpet doubling the voice throughout the piece as it is eluded in the text of Angel–trumpets. Le Nozze di Figaro is one of Mozart's most popular operas, with the libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. Act 2 begins in the bedroom of Countess Rosina Almaviva, where she laments her husband's perceived infidelity with Susana, her maid, in the aria "Porgi Amour". Franz Schubert was one of the most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This example of lieder is a great example of Romantic poetry dealing with nature and the human condition with emotion. The poetry is by poet Ludwig Heinrich Christoph HГ¶lty. Clara Schumann paved the way for women composers and was a finer musician than many of her contemporaries. Clara Schumann was renowned in her time, for her outstanding piano skills and her performances as a child prodigy. She composed "Lorelei" in 1843; it is towards the end of her lieder output from the years 1831 to 1853. The text is by German Poet Heinrich Heine, a favorite author among Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. "Die Lorelei" is one of his most popular poems and was set to music by other composers, but Clara's musical setting has been lovingly referred to as the 'Female equivalent to "Der ErlkГ¶nig." Hugo Wolf was another nineteenth–century composer who specialized in lieder. He wrote hundreds of lieder and composed other works, including two operas. His style is linked to the Second Viennese School of Arnold Schoenberg, Alan Berg, and Anton Webern. Wolf's lieder continually have grand moments of expressiveness. His lieder and compositions have complex harmonic motions; Verschwiegene Liebe especially is harmonically thick all while maintaining its sweetness. Richard Strauss was a leading German composer that spanned the late nineteenth century into the twentieth century. He is best known for his numerous operas, like Salome and Der ... Do you think about Annie Hall, or maybe Hannah and Her Sisters? You probably know who Johnny Depp and Marlon Brando and Michael Fassbender. For members of the Academy of Motion Pictures, these names may ring some bells for their work as directors or actors, and it's probably for their work in the film industry. For members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, you may recognize these names from interviewing them or writing about their work. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We knew all about Winona Ryder's arrest and we knew all about Robert Downey Jr.'s struggle with drug addiction. So, if other celebrities can be thought of by their crimes in addition to their work, why is it that so many cases of rape and abuse seem to be swept under the rug by the film industry and the press? The film industry continues to work and award people like Michael Fassbender (who has two Academy Award and five Golden Globe nominations under his belt), even though they may have threw their girlfriend and dragged her alongside a car when he was drunk, causing a swollen ankle, a burst ovarian cyst, a broken nose, and a blown out knee cap. A victim, like Amber Heard, can have photographic evidence, witnesses, and a video of Johnny Depp abusing her, and Johnny Depp can still have five upcoming projects. • 9. Counterculture In Vietnam War When the term "counterculture" is brought up, people tend to think of the phenomenon that started in the early sixties consisting of people quitting their jobs to live in communion and protest what were then contentious social rights issues together, such as the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. Shortly after the culmination of the counterculture, several significant acts of progress were made, such as the Voters Rights Act, to curb the influence of racial segregation within America, which resulted in the end of the movement shortly thereafter. By 1973, theUnited States withdrew its troops from Vietnam, and with little remaining to unify the remnants of those still involved with the counterculture, they soon saw their own movement ... These include the recreational use of drugs, environmentalism, feminism, and perhaps most notably, the same opposition to war shared by many today that was observed at the height of the movement. During his observation of the American opposition to the Iraq War, Antonius Robben noted that those who were involved in the counterculture "have grown children (and grandchildren) who carry forth their tradition locally, and, dispersed, elsewhere" (15). This influence also extended towards those not related to protesters of the Vietnam War, and while the known factors of the invasion of Iraq can be said to already be a strong basis for the opposition's argument, with or without the inclusion of any prior history on any war, the United States past involvement in the Vietnam War, and the massive protests held during the sixties and seventies have had a certain influence on every American military conflict since then. • 10. Bernado Bertolucci's Last Tango In Paris In Bernado Bertolucci's Last Tango in Paris, a recent widower, Paul (Marlon Brando) and a younger woman, Jeanne (Maria Schieder) pursue a passionate love affair in which they don't reveal each other's names. Although the affair initially seems like casual sex, it starts to deeply affect them as Paul copes with the death of his wife, Rose, and Jeanne prepares to marry her fiancГ©, Tom (Jean–Pierre LeГ¤ud), a film director making a documentary about her. Through a painful grieving process, Paul learns to trust and fall in love again. This seemingly pleasant change in Paul is ultimately his demise, as Jeanne fatally shoots him in the chest. Bertolucci illustrates Paul's socio–psychological makeup from life to death by incorporating mise–en scene, nondiegetic elements, dark lighting, abrupt soundtrack, foils and doubles, and repeated motifs. Paul is an extremely distant individual, so the narrative presents parts of Paul's past and present with the use of nondiegetic elements and the unraveling motif. When Paul is first introduced, he is under a train holding his ears screaming "F***ing God!" indicating he is in a lot of pain. Later Paul and a maid are cleaning up Rose's blood in the bathroom. Mulattos have mixed African and Iberian ancestry. Mestizos are people with mixed ancestry, specifically Amerindian and Spanish ancestry. Indigenous traditions, European –derived music, and African–inspired musical activity make up the music of Central America, South America, and Mexico. African influence is evident in African secular and religious practices, in instruments modeled after African instruments, and in the use of musical traits associated with Africa's ethnic groups. Amazonian tribes can differ in their language, dress, belief system, and kinship practices. The KayapГі–Xikrin are from the rainforests of Brazil. Men and women usually sing separately. Vocal pulsation is a slight periodic volume amplification. Takak –nhiok is a KayapГі–Xikrin naming ritual that occurs in five stages over five years. In each stage, the initiates gain new knowledge about practices and activities in their community. The two official languages of Peru are Spanish and Quechua. The Inca Empire reached its peak in the last decades of the 1400s. The two centers of power are located in Cusco and Machu Picchu. In both, actors deliver their lines in a wooden way; in both, characters do things that are regarded as morally suspect without remorse or elaborate justification; and both are more episodic than narrative. – Petra Van Brabandt & Jesse Prin "Why Do Porn Films Suck?" From Hard Core Art to Pornography and Back In this paper I inquire about the distinctions between the genres of hard core art cinema and pornography. Given that the definitions of both pornography and hard core art cinema are rather contentious and the dividing line between these genres is quite blurry, this curious question is of importance. In this paper I attempt to examine where and why this dividing line is usually drawn. In order to do this, I take as examples two controversial films – Une Vraie Jeune Fille by Catherine Breillat (filmed in 1975 but never shown until 1999) and Pretty Baby by Louis Malle (filmed in 1978) – and trace critics ' responses to them in order to compare different reviews and opinions, especially on the issue of sex scenes and nudity presented in the films. I chose Une Vraie Jeune Fille because this film contains close ups of genitalis and scenes of unsimulated sex that were deemed obscene at a time. By contrast, Pretty Baby has been deemed offensive and obscene not because of sex scenes but because it contains nude depictions of a twelve–year–old actress. This paper is structured in such a way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The five centuries of musical activity shows that Puerto Ricans have created, developed and promoted a variety of genres ranging from folk music, concert music and new genres. The Puerto Rican music and native musicians have shaped and enriched the identity of the Puerto Rican people and their roots. Puerto Rican music was the ultimate expression of the "Areito" (indigenous artistic traditions) combined in a unitary fashion, oral narrative, dance and music. By the end of the fifteenth century, the Taino Indians had already developed musical instruments used in their ceremonies, religious rituals and daily life. Some of the ... Among the African groups that influence ethnic and cultural formation of the island are the Ashanti and Fante of Ghana, Carabalis southern shore of the Niger River, the Congos and Equatorial Africa from the late eighteenth century until the middle nineteenth century and the Yoruba of West Africa. Africans cultivated their traditions and dances in several coastal towns and municipalities that are currently Loiza, Guayama, Ponce, CataГ±o. The current African music has been preserved in the instruments that are still heard in the characteristic method of executing them, and in some songs, rhythms and dances that have been preserved by oral tradition. Around the eighteenth century, one of the factors that caused considerable impact on the formation of the Island Music, was the arrival of a group of musicians with a Spanish military regiment in 1765. The activity of these bands, which included public concerts and the music of nature based, religious and social activities, along with traditional festivals at the center of town squares, prosecutes a favorable environment for musical development. The 1920s brought a decrease in the work week, and nearly a 30 percent increase in wages. Extra money called for extra activities to feel up the abundance of time given to the American population. This is why entertainment, between 1919 and 1929, collected almost 4 billion dollars. Choices were not limited due to the fact that several forms of mass entertainment emerged such as, the radio, "Talkies", spectator sports, the phonograph, and many other things that had never been seen before. Sales in music genres such as "Hillbilly" music, and jazz skyrocketed, making record players and other musical devices hit an all–time high. This decade is also recognized for the great number of musicians, writers, and artists who produced work that was innovative and creative beyond belief. • 18. Ernest Hemingway's Short Story 'Up in Michigan': A Review Introduction The short story Up in Michigan is one of Hemingway's earliest works, believed to be one of the earliest works of Hemingway after he arrived in Paris in December of 1921 (Oliver 14). The story was first published in 1923 in Three Stories and Ten Poems. As with most first works some scholars would argue all first works the story is believed to be derivative. The characters seem to have been plucked from Hemingway's childhood (Svoboda and Waldmeir 63). A boyhood friend of Hemingway's was named Wesley Dilworth and his parents were named Jim and Liz Dilworth (Comley and Scholes 29). Scholarly reviews led to the discovery of pre–publication typescripts of Up in Michigan. Interestingly, a pre–publication version of the story begins: "Wesley Dilworth got the dimple in his chin from his mother. Her name had been Liz Buell. Jim Dilworth married her when he came to Horton's Bay from Canada and bought the mill with A. J. Stroud" (KL/EH 800, 1, as cited in Johnson). From this excised paragraph, readers are able to see how Hemingway invented the fictionalized story from the bit of that he drew from his early years (Benson). Scholars and critics often use this short story as a jumping off point when exploring the development of Hemingway's approach to writing and his narrative style. The characters, Jim and Liz, are like many of Hemingway's characters in that they are disinclined to philosophize, are prone to action, learn from experience, and avoid abstract ... No words in the vernacular can describe this great event, you'll be dumb with wonderment... And on top of your fee, you'll be involved artistically."
It is with these words that Harold Zidler–the owner of the titular nightclub in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge!– describes a theatre play to his financier, and at the same time, fittingly describes not only the key features of Moulin Rouge!, but also the defining characteristics of Luhrmann's signature genre, 'Red Curtain Cinema', to the audience of the film. The term, coined by the director himself, is distinguished by films that follow a simple, recognisable narrative set in a world of 'heightened reality': Luhrmann describes the central parameters as a "simple, even naГЇve story based on a primary myth...set in a heightened interpretation of a world that is at once familiar yet distant and exotic". The use of music, set, costumes, as well as more technical features such as rapid cuts and editing are employed to make the simple story more dramatic, amplifying the movie experience to a degree that viewers are made wholly aware of the artistry and technology involved. It occurs even more in Spanish, e.g. the deformation of names for cannabis: mota (lit., "something which moves" on the black market), replacing grifa (lit., "something coarse to the touch"), replacing marihuana (a female personal name, MarГa Juana), replacing caГ±amo (the original Spanish name for the plant, derived from the Latin genus name Cannabis). Effects Of World War One On Europe Kegan Navarre Mrs.Martinez ELA IV 4th Hour May 2, 2016 The Effects of World War One on Europe In the early twentieth century, the most powerful nations in the world were preparing for war with a heightened sense of national pride. Germany, eager to go to war, created arguably the greatest military in the world at the time. This heightened militarism in Germany had two major reactions from other world powers. The first was to build up their respective militaries in order to prepare for a war if it became necessary. The second was to create a system of alliances in case they were attacked. The series of alliances led to the formation of two powerful groups. The first was known as the "Central Powers" consisting of Germany, Bulgaria, Austria–Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. The second was the "Allied Powers" which included England, France, Russia, and Italy. Then on June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. After the assassination, Austria – Hungary declared war on Serbia. The series of alliances created prior to the assassination led to many European countries declaring war on one another in order to protect their allies. Because of imperialism of Africa in the ninteenth century and a growing US involvement in European affairs, the war spread throughout the entire world. The idea of an actor throwing himself so far into a role that character and man become one intrigues and horrifies most. Of course, there is more to it than that. The technique of method acting became prominent in the mid–twentieth century thanks to teachers like Lee Strasberg of the Actors Studio in New York. In essence, the method involves a search for truth in a role, wherein the actor or actress recalls emotions or reactions from their own life to inform and identify with the character. These feelings thus regenerated are then used in the current acting situation in order to fill out the role with 'human depth and personal involvement'. The necessity of the event being from the distant rather than recent past is because Stanislavski felt (at the time) that time distilled events and feelings, acting as a 'splendid filter for remembered feelings.'" But, before he changed his tune, two of his students from his First Studio, Ri chard Boleslavsky and Maria Ouspenskaya, immigrated to the United States and began teaching the Stanislavski "Method" to American students at the American Laboratory Theatre in 1925. • 32. Rent: A Unique and Revolutionary Musical Essay The musical Rent is a representation of the Bohemian lifestyle of being different and being able to explore and be unique. What makes this musical so unique is its revolutionary musical style and a plot like no other. The lyricist and composer of the musical Jonathan Larson did something no one would ever imagine and go outside of the box. Who would have thought of putting lesbians, gays, HIV and AIDS victims, and the life of a Bohemian into one rock and pop based musical? This struggle to survive and accomplish things makes Rent amazing. When Jonathan Larson and his friend were talking, Larson was given the idea to create a musical based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohГЁme. • 33. Theme Of Power In Dracula First of all, before analysing the theme, it is necessary to clarify the notion of "dynamic of power". In fact, this denotes the dialectic interaction between the subject possessing the power and the object which is influenced by this power. In literature, this liaison is expressed by the relations between a master and a slave. For instance, the Russian writers Dostoevsky and Tolstoy explored the theme of the relations between a master and a slave, an oppressor and an oppressed in their works. Since this theme has stirred the imagination of many writers, it is not surprising that the possibility to expose this type of relations has attracted the filmmakers for the decades. It is important to point out that such creative movement as German Expressionism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dracula in this film refers more to the Sympathetic Cycle (1987 – present) by the classification of Tim Kane. The films of this cycle show thevampire with more sympathetic qualities, with thoughts, feelings, fears, and dreams. The sympathetic vampires of the recent films have developed into misunderstood, tortured romantic figures or even ultimate romantic alpha–hero. Coppola's Dracula seems to be on the border of the Erotic and Sympathetic cycles. Seduction and allure are still inherent to him, as well as his victims are ready to sacrifice, expecting gratification from the master. The scenes of bite do not have sexual hints, they speak directly of sex. For example, this is the scene when Jonathan is attacked by the Dracula's brides, who lick and kiss him before biting, and the victim endures pain, fear and sensual pleasure. When Dracula, transformed into a wolf, attacks Lucy, he physically copulates with her. And again, we see that these relations develop with the consent of the victim as the attack arouses Lucy, and she anticipates the vampire's visits. So, overall, each participant of the vampire–victim's relationship is not equal. One is superior (stronger, with a hypnotic stare and other super–abilities, moreover, he is immortal) and another is subordinate (just a human–being, fragile and helpless). Nevertheless, this inequality, the power, that a vampire, a master possesses and victim's eagerness to obey make these relations tempting for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Movie acting is different than stage acting because they have to be prepared to cut scenes out and from couple different angles and voice directly into the camera. The actors only learn the lines from the scene they are doing at the time instead of knowing them all. It is also not shot in the order it is seen in because they don't want to be going back and forth from location to location, so they shoot all the scenes that is needed at a certain location. They also have to take more than one shot per scene because maybe they want different angles or someone may have messed up. A perfect example of movie vs. stage acting is the scene where Stanley yells out STELLA! Because he harmed her so she left with Eunice and he goes after her to apologize but has to get her attention by screaming her name out until she came out to talk to him. This scene must have been much easier for the film because the director and actors don't have to worry about messing up they can just retake a scene and they can adjust it to their desire. While stage acting the actors have to deal with an audience watching their every move and if they mess up they don't have another chance. Maybe the actor didn't project their voice enough for everyone to hear them. They also might lose their voice from the very intense screaming. As well as forgetting a line on stage and embarrassing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Qualities Of Brando 's Acting Both authors examined the qualities of Brando's acting that made his acting memorable. Neves investigated Brando's acting style in the 1954 film On The Waterfront. Neves delved into how Brando's method acting approach strengthened his role and focused on the psychological complexity Brando gave to the character. Whereas Krasner wrote about Brando's role in the 1951 film A Streetcar Named Desire and explored specific details in his acting technique, such as his usage of mumbling and his rebellious wardrobe choices. Neves' points proved to be the strongest, with his extremely in–depth analysis and use of psychology to explain Brando's character's actions. In the future, historians could analyze how Brando's acting improved and became more memorable as he became older. Altogether, there were many reasons for Brando's memorability, as shown by Neves' arguments that the method style enhanced his acting, and as shown in Krasner's arguments that precise details in his acting made him memorable, and further information on his memorability could be gained by studying how his acting became better over time. Neves addressed the question of Brando's memorability by examining his acting in the 1954 movie On The Waterfront. Neves uses hearings by Elia Kazan (director of On the Waterfront) by the House Committee of Un–American Activities as a primary source. This source was useful because it allowed Neves to gain information on the film's background, in the director's own words. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Mickey Rourke: A Hero's Journey appreciation for the other members of the cast or crew. By the early Nineties, after Nine 1/2 Weeks and Wild Orchid, he was known to millions as a soft pornographer rather than a serious dramatist – a fate that did not befall Brando after Last Tango In Paris. Always living beyond his means, he was continually forced to take poor roles in silly movies, simply to finance his lavish lifestyle. He hung around with bad people – street thugs and mobsters. • 38. Advantages Of Travelling Alone On the whole, as a Westerner (and usually comparably rich, even as an YBP) you can make all the smart choices about transport. You will never have to take a flight with the airline that has the worst safety record on that continent. You will never have to get into a taxi where the limping car has clearly never been serviced and where the driver smells strongly of whisky. You are traveling for pleasure and can always say no. But happily, such experiences are few and far between. We may all come from different countries, but on the whole, we all still want to live well and safely. Undoubtedly, life can feel more cheap in some countries than others, but if you plan ahead and choose to take the smart options, you can enjoy hassle–free travel ... Here's a mixture of pros and cons to bear in mind when considering study abroad (here's a hint though – I believe that the PROS totally outweigh the CONS, naturally!): PRO – You Can Experience a Foreign Culture There is nothing like having your own experience of travel to feel like you are really living. It is all very well to admire the plains of South Africa in a film, or to climb Amazonian waterfalls in your imagination when you read a book, but there really is nothing like being there in person. Travel can surprise all your senses, often all at once, and it can be a real thrill to immerse yourself in the customs and culture of other people. PRO – Learn A New Language If you have some basic Spanish, why not enhance it with a few months in Barcelona? Or hone your French in Paris, Mauritius or Martinique? There are endless opportunities for improving a language or learning a new one from scratch. Just remember – there is no better way to learn a language well than by chatting to locals every day.
