Utopia By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In 1516, Thomas More, English diplomat and philosopher wrote the book entitled Utopia (More).
More coined the term Utopia, an imaginary place in which the government, laws, and social
conditions are perfect (Merriam–Webster.com). More's Utopia carries the idea that everyone within
the utopian society does what is necessary for the good of the society. People live as equals
according to perfectly obeyed rules. There is no private property and everyone works to support the
group. Many definitions arise when the idea of an ideal society is mentioned. Individuals within a
society possess different values and ideas, this, therefore, creates different views of what an ideal
society is defined by. My ideal society would be quite different from the American society today.
Civil Rights leader and social activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., also expressed what his ideal
society depicted in his infamous speech, "I Have a Dream". He delivered this speech on August 28,
1963, on the steps of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial (Garrow). In Dr. King's ideal society, everyone
would be treated equally and not discriminated against due to the color of their skin. "I have a dream
that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of
their skin but by the content of their character." Just like King's ideal society, in my Utopia everyone
will be treated equally and there will be no discrimination towards skin color or gender.
The government would be a

Dreaming In Color By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dreaming in color can bring us together as a harmonic world. Every culture is different, but in some
way they all have similarities. Every culture has different traditions, and each religion has different
beliefs and celebrations. Cultures are full of unique ideas. People may think that being different is
unacceptable, but really it's exceptional to be in a unique and different culture. When everyone
dreams in color, the world becomes peaceful and beautiful. Even though our cultures are different
they are also full of love and color. If everyone believed this, the world will have a culture that is
living the dream.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed in color. Unlike other people he believed in everyone. Even in
the darkest times, he kept his

The Legacy Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I will discuss how
his leadership has impacted both America as a whole and the United States Army, as well as how Dr.
King has influenced my own life as a Soldier, Military Intelligence professional, and leader. The
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., embodied many of the attributes that we look for in Army
leaders today. Dr. King lived a life characterized by moral courage, selfless service, respect for
everybody, honor, and integrity. During his time as the de facto leader of the civil rights movement,
he was motivated by the plight of blacks throughout the South, both during his own time and for
generations before him. Dr. King writes in his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" (1963) of his
frustration over a gamut of issues: simple but persistent issues like the constant disrespect and
taunting that black people faced on a daily basis; issues that affected his own family, like having to
explain to his young daughter why he couldn 't take her to a local amusement park; and darker
issues like vicious beatings and unprovoked lynchings and murder. His sense of empathy ran deep,
for their struggle was his own. Dr. King was a leader with a distinct presence: he was known
nationwide as a man with true professional bearing, always carrying himself with dignity. He
insisted that both he and those involved in protests and demonstrations "conduct [their] struggle on
the high plane of dignity

Negro. When people hear or see this word they often either associate it with slavery, racism, or just
another term for African American. The word Negro's origin came from the Spanish and Portuguese
in 1442, used to describe Africans that they encountered during their trip to India. But what makes
this word so taboo is the fact that in America the word "Negro" has a long history associated with
slavery, segregation, and oppression. Those exact words are also what African American's history
here in America mostly consists of. Through some of these horrible times of injustices African
Americans had to go through, some historical rebels stood out, one of them being the Rev. Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. who in response wrote an open letter whilst in a Birmingham jail to eight
clergymen's concerns about a demonstration against racial segregation as printed in a local
Birmingham, Alabama newspaper. In the clergymen's letter they call King's actions "unwise and
untimely." In response King writes a letter which he has carefully and strongly crafted his arguments
specifically concerning why he came to Birmingham, why he resorted to demonstration instead of
negotiation, why his actions were not untimely, and how breaking the law can be justified. The first
concern expressed in the clergymen's letter is why King was in Birmingham in the first place since
Birmingham, Alabama isn't his hometown. King responds to this by pointing out the fact that he was
invited to Birmingham because he

"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism
and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality...I believe that
unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word." These famous words by the
honorable Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. best capture his frame of mind and the hopes he once held for
the African American people during his fight for civil rights. King was an activist, pastor, and strong
leader whose actions played an integral role in the advancement of the African American people as a
whole. Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929, King spent the overwhelming majority of his life leading
the African American Civil Rights Movement by using his very effective non–violent approach.
Based off of his strong Christian beliefs, King led a multitude of boycotts, protests, marches, and
speeches over the course of his life. These include the Montgomery Movement as well as one of his
most famous speeches, the "I Have A Dream" speech. Spearheading the Montgomery Boycott was
just one of King's noteworthy accomplishments along the realms of non–violent direct action.
Sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks after her refusal to relinquish her seat on a city bus, the
Montgomery Boycott was a year–long bus boycott in protest against the unjust laws that segregated
public buses (Azbell 114). King was chosen by community leaders of the Montgomery
Improvement Association to lead said

In the 1950's America developed in a way that would change the entire future of the country. The
civil rights movement brought the righteous anger, distress, and demand that all people be treated
equally. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. advocated that people needed to take a stand and quit being
patient, in order to advance democracy in America. Was King correct in believing that impatience
helps to advance democracy? I argue that Dr. King was correct in demanding impatience from the
African American community to achieve equality. In this paper I will be evaluating the stance that
Dr. King takes on impatience by looking at Dr. King's work as well as the work of Mahatma
Gandhi, Greg Weiner, Philip Fisher, Lars Svendson, and Bauman Zygmunt. Through the evaluation
of other positions on the importance of patience and impatience it will be shown how Dr. King is
correct in his approach to democracy through impatience. In Dr. King's book Why We Can't Wait,
King addresses the current situation of 1962 and 1963 United States, as well as the history of
America (King pgs. 15,16,17). He points out the mistreatment and inequality that plagued the
nation. While slavery had been outlawed years ago, the structure of slavery in people's eyes had not
been eliminated. In his book King states, "As the then vice–president, Lyndon B. Johnson, phrased
it: 'Emancipation was a Proclamation but not a fact.' The pen of the Great Emancipator had moved
the Negro into the sunlight of physical freedom, but

Dr. Martin Luther King Observation Report
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. a great man who is still respected and honored by all Americans. Dr.
King is admired today, due to his leadership and Charisma skills, as well as his non–violence
approach to solving problems. However, on Monday the 18, of January 2016, Americans all over the

King is remembered because of the Montgomery bus boycott, and Rosa Parks being arrested for
refusing to give up her seat to a white person, she was a part of the bus boycott as well (Faragher,

over a year (Faragher et al., 2009). Due to the boycott, White and African Americans in 2016, can sit
together and ride the buses together without any hostility or violence. Several movement activists
today view Dr. King as one of the most conspicuous among some of the most exceptional
movement tacticians, ideologues, and strategists, influential leaders in the United States (Carson,
1987). In addition, Dr. King is known as a Civil Rights leader, which stood behind President

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr 's words on April 3, 1968 at Mason Temple in Memphis Tennessee speaks
through the ages and still grips me with an eerie feeling of prophetic conviction. King 's stirring
words that night were classical pieces of rhetoric that will be preserved as a place mark for the civil
rights movement. When a sick, but yet powerful King bellowed out to the audience "I may not get
there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promise land!"; he
was eerily suggesting that his life may possibly be ending soon but the movement continuing. This
part of the speech is moving but yet stirring, and to many of the people in attendance that night,
disturbing. Here is this iconic figure telling a packed congregation of weary, yet persistent people
that he may not make the journey into the land that produces a brighter day and better opportunities.
This likens to the biblical story of Moses. After leading the Children of Israel out of bondage for so
long and tirelessly working to get them to the land of Canaan Moses is told by God that he will not
be the one to lead them into the "land flowing with milk and honey" and that he will not enter
therein at all. It is unnerving to think that Martin knew that his time was at hand. That he had led his
people as far as he could lead them. The melancholy mood brought on by the thought of King 's
premature death turns into an emotional cry of self– assurance but also a dramatic exhale and a

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Paper
With his constant pursuit for civil rights, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped bridge the gap between
races during the 1960Õs. (It was) His unique approach of using nonviolent protests (to) helped
create an awareness of the inequalities the African Americans had to endure during this time period.
In 1963, King went to Birmingham, Alabama to engage in a nonviolent protest (there), yet before he
could perform the (protest Ð use synonym such as rally or something) he was arrested. While King
was in the prison he wrote Letter from a Birmingham Prison. By reading this letter one can easily

He then brings up two very important facts to defend his case. The first is that there have been more
unsolved bombings of African American homes and churches in Birmingham than any other place
in the United States. Furthermore, on the basis of those conditions African American leaders in the
community had attempted to negotiate with the cityÕs leaders, but the city leaders had refused to.
King then cites Socrates on the notion that in order to make any level of accomplishment, one must
raise public awareness by using nonviolent protests. These protests would create a tension in the
mind of the individual and society because racism is illogical.
King( then tried to) explained that even though the white moderates, though good intentioned,
donÕt understand the situation in full. Moreover, to not understand the importance of the issue, then
results in a lack of involvement. King felt that with the white moderates involvement was crucial to
any steps forward, yet their lack of involvement would only make thier pursuit for civil liberties
even more difficult. He makes a powerful argument, ÒIt is a historical fact that privileged groups
sedom give up thier privileges voluntarily.Ó The significane of this quote is the theme of this letter.
King (is– was) saying that African American can no longer remain idle in the hopes to been seen as

Dr. Martin Luther King 's Speech
Racism has always been a major problem in America. However, it was known to be the most
problematic in the late 1950s. On August 28 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his infamous
speech "I Have a Dream" to America. His dream highlighted the injustices of segregation and
discrimination of African Americans that took place in this nation every single day. Dr. King
inspired thousands despite the color of their skin, to take a stance against racism, with his powerful
way with words. In his speech MLK efficaciously uses, Ethos, Pathos, and Logos by using
allusions, developing credibility, in his speech to persuade all Americans to be aware of the
problems with racism. Dr. King dives right into his speech opening with ethos, by using ... Show

By using Lincoln, King knows that he is hitting home with the half of the audience that consist of
African Americans. In hopes of creating a better sense of credibility, which encourages people to
accept his idea or "dream", King mentions the Declaration of Independence. Dr. king makes himself
credible by challenging what citizens known as the unalienable rights. Unalienable rights, are rights
that cannot be taken away from a human being. They are considered rights given to people by God
himself, when they are born. In the third paragraph he quotes, 'the unalienable Rights of Life,
Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. "This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well
as white men, would be guaranteed the "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of
Happiness." He uses the quote to show that the Supreme Court should be on his side. However, he
then goes on to tell how even though it should be on his side it is not. "It is obvious today that
America has defaulted on this promissory note." He is stating that the American government has
neglected their promise to ALL of the American people. By doing this he is asking the readers to ask
themselves, why has America failed to reach the expectations of equality? Why is the injustice only
occurring to blacks? And most importantly, What can be done to change this? In another attempt to
appear more credible, King often times quotes the bible. His use of the bible can cause an emotional
response, but

Dr. Martin Luther King is a very passionate, motivating and an inspiring speaker. His "I Have a
Dream" is a perfect example of pathos. His speech had so much passions that it filled the audience
with so much emotions. Even though there is a strong presence of pathos, than logo and ethos. They
are very much present in his speech.
On August 28, 1963, on a Washington DC street filled with over 250,000 demonstrators [black and
white, young and old] came together to witness Dr. Martin Luther King speaks about the unhuman
treatment of the colored people in America, and to appeal for an end to the discrimination and
Segregation in the United States. This peaceful gathering is now regarded as one of the pivotal point
in the civil right movement in America.
At a time where colored people were viewed as lesser race to the white race in America, Dr. Martin
Luther King's speech was expected to rally the races together. The civil right movement can easily
be viewed as a war between African–Americans and Caucasians Americans, but it reality many
other races were involved, like: Hispanic and Americans, Asian Americans were also discriminated
and surrogated from the Caucasian population. The cruel and merciless white police officers would
issue out orders to their racists' subordinates on the powerless African–American young adults and
children. The heartless white fire department used their massive water hoses on the peaceful
protesters, only because the protesters' skins were darker than

On August 28, 1963, in a monumental moment in American history, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
delivered his powerful "I Have A Dream" speech in front of a crowd of over 250,000 people on the
steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., our nation's capital. The year 1963 is of
particular interest to me because it comes just 3 years after the end of the 1950s, a period that to this
day receives mixed analysis when examined. To many the 1950s was considered to be America's so
called 'happy days,' but to others like Martin Luther King Jr. and the thousands of civil rights
protestors that followed him and other leaders, the 1950s marked a period of social injustice and
racial oppression. "I have a dream..." said Dr. King "that one day this nation will rise up and live out
the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self–evident, that all men are created
equal'" (King, 1964) It was not even a year later after delivering these famous words that on July
2nd, 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed The Civil Rights of 1964 into law which
permanently ended legal discrimination against individuals based on race, gender, nationality, and
religion. While we would all love to say that the story ended there as Americans graciously accepted
the new laws and lived out the rest of their lives in harmony with all other Americans, that is not the
case. In 1965 peaceful African–American protesters in Selma, Alabama were beaten and assaulted

Personal Opinion: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King was a man who demonstrated that actions spoke louder than words. Martin
Luther King Jr. is someone who I consider a mediator because he was able to bring people to follow
him and what he believed. What he did made it seem as he had come to this world to make a change
that had never been seen, which was to have more freedom for African–Americans. During his time
African–Americans had recently been given freedom, but were segregated from going to same
places as the white people and he wanted to change that. The way he was able to portray himself to
people was through speeches, although many were against him because he trying to change the way
society treated those who were not Caucasian.
He was able to persuade many, just by his speeches and nonviolent actions. Like a mediator he also
was perceived as a threat to society, such as Jesus and Krishna because he wanted to change
something that was right those superior, but horrible to his people.. People of color were not allowed
to eat study or be in the same public places as whites. Martin felt this had to end, the wrongful
treatment against Africans. Many followed him because they believed in him, not only by his word,
but his actions as well although his speeches united many to work alongside peacefully in order to

Rosa Parks And Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Throughout the 1950's and 1960's, there were many acts, movements, and anger that inspired people
to fight for their rights and declare the United States as integrated and hate free. There were many
people that acted for their rights and for the rest of the people that were not able to speak up. Along
with these people that were able to speak publicly or privately, there were marches and boycotts.
Finally, there were violent acts which took place against colored citizens which left a negative
impact on America's past. The anger, passion, and drive for freedom so many citizens felt allowed
the country to surpass its negative views and practices to emerge a more open and more accepting
place.
Of the most influential people during the civil rights movement, was Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. However, President Eisenhower is often overlooked as influential during this time
but he did pass many acts and give orders to help children trying to attend school safely while the
face of the nation was changing. Rosa Parks is well known for her refusal to give up her seat on the
bus, but she was not the only one. There were others who did the same deed but she just so
happened to be recognized for this, and it's a very positive thing she was. Without her actions and
the recognition of other's there would not have been such a large reaction and response. Another

I know for certain people have had a worldly figure or two that they have idolized throughout their
lives. A person that they have looked up to and have aspired to be like. I too had that kind of role
model in my life, a being that was a guide stone in my path of life. He made me realize how I should
live my life. But no more is he a role model for me. I felt a sense of betrayal by the figure when I
learned about his dark and unknown side. It was then when I learned to look both sides of the story,
that there is no such thing as a perfect being in this world. Now hear me out! I am not exaggerating!

understanding brought along some short–term as well as long–term effects into my life. The short–
term effect that I felt was that I began to be doubtful to a person's claim of fame. I would not
completely believe what that person has said or done to achieve such honor. In the long–term, the
effect I felt was to research or at least check out the hidden, horrible side to them. I can predict that
both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, two of our beloved presidents, probably have a
sinister side to them as well. But maybe it was foolish of

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a well noted American leader, who is known primarily for his role in

champion of human rights and considered to be not only associated with the cause of racial
discrimination against the African–Americans, but also with other social causes relating to injustice,
unfairness and discrimination in the American society. He also holds the privilege of being the
youngest ever person in the history to have received the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize1. Besides
being a well–renowned social activist, he was also a Baptist minister and had a degree in Theology

The United States has had countless influential leaders. Most of our praised leaders have risen in
times of depression, and in eras when we lacked the ability to come together for ourselves. Dr.
Martin Luther King was and will forever be remembered as one of the greatest leaders in American
history for his public speaking skills that united millions during the civil rights movement. Born on

followed in his families' footsteps and became the third member to become a pastor at Ebenezer
Baptist Church in Atlanta. He followed his Father and grandfather by attending Morehouse College,
which is a historically black university. He later attended Boston College where he received his
doctorate degree and met his wife Coretta Scott who was his partner in his civil rights campaign. He
was an executive committee member on the NAACP board, and led a 382–day boycott of the

about the issues in regard to civil rights. He is most famous for his "I have a dream speech" at the

Societal injustice is an ongoing issue that is debated frequently. Specifically, many argue different
means of ameliorating societal injustice. The remarkable and influential advocate of the Civil Rights
movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, addressed the injustices pertaining to his time period in the mid

Dr. King practiced what he preached and gained an innumerable amount of followers. He was
ultimately successful because of his use of nonviolence. Through boycotting, sit–ins, and marches,
Dr. King achieved the high regard he has today. Furthermore, Cesar Chavez, labor union organizer

In Venezuela a man called Leopoldo Lopez is a living example of the validity Dr. King's values have

Venezuelans' response to Lopez's call was tremendous and thousands of people went out to the

The final results were 43 demonstrators dead, thousands injured and around 1500 arrested including

But Lopez arrest was not a normal one. After the first demonstration in Caracas, the government

King 's Speech By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
"I Have a Dream" one of the most popular speeches in history was written by Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr., an African American preacher. He directs his speech to two main groups of people. The
first group being those listening to the speech, and the second being those who are just around the
area where he is delivering his speech. King's speech is focusing on the civil rights of the African
American citizens. He talks about how poorly the other people have treated them. He uses historical
documentation to back up his points. King's main concern is that if all men are created equally, then
why are men of color being treated differently. His main purpose in writing and delivering this
speech is to change the thoughts people have developed about African Americans. He appeals to
emotions as well as logic, and uses some appeal to his credibility as a writer and speaker. King also
utilizes his personal experiences to help with his emotional approach to this speech. King is very
good at capturing the audiences' attention through emotional appeal. He makes sure to talk about the
poor treatment people of color have had to deal with. "One hundred years later, the life of the Negro
is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination." (King). He
uses this time span to put into perspective how long African Americans have been waiting to finally
be free from treatment such as, segregation and discrimination. He uses analogies to help his

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is, arguably, the most influential African American leader in the history
of the United States of America. His "I Have a Dream" speech was delivered on Wednesday, August
28th, 1963 during the March on Washington for Jobs and Equality. His words were captivating and
full of hope. The March on Washington for Jobs and Equality was not the first large civil rights
march led by African Americans. There were many marches previous such as the Prayer Pilgrimage
for Freedom in 1957; a march organized by A. Philip Randolph who became well known after he
began planning a "mass gathering in Washington to draw attention to discrimination in the war
defense industry, prompted President Franklin D. Roosevelt to desegregate the nation 's munitions
factories and establish the Fair Employment Practices Commission" (Civil Rights Digital Library)
in the 1940s. Dr. King also spoke at this event, giving his powerful "Give Us the Ballot" speech
which brought him to prominence and fame, however, it is the "I Have a Dream" that has become
the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There are three themes that resonate while reading and
listening to Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech. The first theme is that there is a great need for
equality in America for their black citizens. He deduced, "One hundred years later, the life of the
Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacle of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One
hundred years later, the Negro lives on a

Divine Bouey: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Divine Bouey
Dr. Martin Luther King was born January 15th, 1929. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a
baptist minister and a social activist who led the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S from 1950 to
1986.
He graduated at the age of 15. He skipped ninth and eleventh grade then he headed off to college.
He was very smart as a child.
Mr.King was a very strong man who fought for what he believed in. He was willing to die for his
faith and that's exactly what he did. He believed that people shouldn't be judged by our color. He
thought that we should be judged by our character. Back in the mid 1950's, blacks were treated
horribly, when whites were treated good. It was like a division between whites and blacks. Blacks

King was against racism. He wasn't against it because his race suffered. He was against it because it
wasn't right.
Martin Luther King Jr. made many speeches. His most popular speech was " I have a dream".
Everybody loved that speech. That was the first speech everyone heard from him.
King was arrested in 1963 for holding protesting treatments for blacks in Birmingham, Alabama. He
wasn't allowed to do that unfortunately, it was against the law. Birmingham was very segregated
from business to libraries to churches. When King was in jail for the time being he wrote a letter to
the newspaper explaining why he had broke the law. He wrote down " I'm in here because injustice
is here". King and others were willing to go to jail for the cause of civil rights.
Martin Luther King died at the age of 39 on the date April 4th, 1968. If he was still living right now
to this day, he would be 87 years old. He was killed. He got shot at Lorraine Motel in Memphis,
Tennessee. We have MLK day every year to show our appreciation to Mr.King because if he
would've never did what he did. The world would not be how it is today.

Interpretive Response : Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Interpretive Response
Nowadays, like never before, is an ideal opportunity to seek after the fantasy of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. The contempt being showed in our nation and over the world has beforehand driven us to
annihilation, and has the likelihood to do as such once more. Today we live in a period where there
is a pattern of youthful dark individuals being persecuted, and some of the time killed, by police
severity, a period that energizes alienating Muslim–Americans because of a couple of radicals
leading existences of contempt, and a period where certain nations are denied of the privilege to
vote because of gatherings like ISIS. This is a long way from the fantasy Dr. King talked about more
than 50 years prior.
The world we live in today wasn't made overnight. After achievements were made by Dr. King and
his adherents, we anticipated that those achievements would just help us through the following 50
years, and that was an error. Whenever Dr. King was alive, the message of his fantasy was louder
than any time in recent memory. In 1963, the March on Washington touched the hearts of a huge
number of Americans. In 1965, Dr. King and a large number of supporters walked from Selma to
Montgomery, Alabama where 600 African Americans were mercilessly beaten and manhandled as
they demonstrated their relentless devotion to uniformity. Once the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the
Voting Rights Act of 1965 were passed, we celebrated, however then we halted. Dr. Kings fantasy

Dr. Martin Luther King And The Civil Rights Movement
Dr. Martin Luther King was a well known civil rights activist in the civil rights movement. He was a
well known preacher in the mid 1900's. Luther disliked the way white folk treated African
Americans. His speeches were well known and fueled people to peacefully protest. Some people
took protesting way too far. Some extremists would riot and harm other people. Many people were
wounded or even killed in some protests. Martin Luther was very peaceful and even wrote and gave
a speech on loving your enemies. He was preaching this in a church sermon on 17th of November
1957 and in his speech he preached about loving your neighbor and loving your enemies. This goes
along with the famous quote "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer". Luther

On August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial 250,000 people gathered after the March on
Washington. This is where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. addressed the nation with his "I Have a
Dream" speech. He was speaking out about the injustices of segregation, and discrimination of
African Americans that was happening in America. This speech is one of the most famous in
America's history to demonstrate the freedom our nation was built upon. Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr.'s speeches and demonstrations would provoke movement in the hearts of the American people.
He persuaded and inspired a nation into action with his words. With this speech, he masterfully uses
ethos, pathos, logos, inductive, and deductive reasoning to convince all Americans that racism ...

An example of deductive reasoning in this speech is in the fourth paragraph when he says, "This
note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the
'unalienable rights' of 'Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness'" (King, 1963, para. 4) In this
argument, he emphasizes the fact that the Declaration of Independence states that black men are also
men. Therefore, logically, they should be given the same rights that white men get. Another example
of deductive reasoning is all throughout paragraph six when King is explaining that now is the time
for change in the country (King, 1963, para. 6). He is logically going from the general picture of
"Now is the time to make justice a reality," (King, 1963, para. 6) to small conclusions on why this
change needs to happen. Using this type of reasoning allows King to supply sufficient evidence to
his claims and therefore add logos to his speech. In fact, the use of either inductive or deductive
reasoning adds to the logos if a speech. Logos is a rhetorical device that is used to get the audience
to believe the speaker because what the speaker is saying is logical and there is evidence to support
the conclusion. An example of logos in this speech is when he states, "America has given the Negro
people a bad check, a check which has come back marked 'insufficient funds'" (King, 1963, para. 4).
This analogy is using logic as a form of reasoning. He reasoning is that everyone has a

Civil Disobedience, By Dr. Martin Luther King
There have been many people that have partaken in the act of not following, or breaking a law that
they personally have deemed unjust throughout history, or taken part in civil disobedience . Socrates
as well as Dr. Martin Luther King have done this. But the question of whether or not we should be
required to follow a law that one personally believes is unjust is very hard to answer. Nevertheless, I
believe that we should in fact be able to disobey a law and or a decision that we consider to be
unjust. However, in saying this there are some guidelines that come with this. I am not saying that
one should just have a complete disregard for the law, which would result in chaos and there would
not be a civil society. Nonetheless, what I am ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Subsequently, if a person or group decides that the law is unjust, then they must decide to react
appropriately. However, in the case of where the unjust law that is trying to be undone will result in
a greater injustice, the law should remain the same and the group or person must not act to try and
change the law. Moving on, there is a vast difference between a group of people participating in
civil disobedience, where a person or group breaks the law with the knowledge an acceptance of the
consequence, and just sheer violence in response to an unjust law. The whole point of participating
in a protest against an unjust law is to bring awareness and conversation about it and try and rectify
the unjust law with a just one. Therefore, to involve one's self with a violent unjust act against the
unjust law you are trying to protest against out of spite and do not want to accept the consequences
against the people that are enforcing this unjust law will result in a loss of legitimacy for your
protest. Socrates puts it in a very simple way, "Nor must one, when wronged, inflict wrong in
return" Socrates saying this gives a reason why he does not try to bribe his way out of prison. So,
this is the difference between someone who is breaking the law on purpose who wants sincere
change, and someone who is just retaliating out of anger of the unjust law. For this reason, it would
be counterproductive to strike back with utter

Dr. Martin Luther King 's Speech
In Dr. Martin Luther King's speech, "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence", King asserts that
the war in Vietnam is a "symptom" (7) of a much larger disease that affects the "American spirit"
(7). The disease King mentions is causing destruction where ever it is found, and in the case of the
Vietnam war, it has led to their oppression and the death of people. In the section, Strange
Liberators, King states, "They move sadly and apathetically as we heard them off the land of their
fathers into concentration camps where minimal social needs are rarely met. They know they must
move or be destroyed by our bombs" (8). King believed that the disease was leading the United
States to take drastic actions against the Vietnamese people. The U.S. ... Show more content on

Further on into the section, King proclaims, "They wander into the hospitals, with at least twenty
casualties from American firepower for one "Vietcong"–inflicted injury" (8). What this shows is that
through the United States' search for dominance, it has resulted in taking a violent action. The U.S.
government believed that if they were not in control of Vietnam, the spread of communism and their
downfall in dominance would still be an issue. Since the Vietnamese people were in search for their
independence, they wouldn't accept being under the control of another nation, therefore, for the
United States, they saw violence as their only solution. During such draconian times, many thought
that there might not be a solution to end the violence and misery, except for King. In his speech,
King explains that there is a solution for the current dilemma, or in this case, a cure to this horrible
disease. In the section, This Madness Must Cease, King affirms that, he has the possible solution
and provides a list of how it can be possible to solve this issue:
"I would like to suggest five concrete things that our government should do immediately to begin
the long and difficult process of extricating ourselves from this nightmarish conflict:
1. End all bombing in North and South Vietnam.
2. Declare a unilateral cease–fire in the hope that such action will create the atmosphere for
negotiation.
3. Take immediate steps to prevent other battlegrounds in

Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension just as Socrates felt
that it was necessary to create a tension in the mind so that individuals could rise from the bondage
of myths and half–truths to the unfettered realm of creative analysis and objective appraisal.
In King 's letter from Birmingham, he said the purpose of our direct action program is to create a
situation so crisis–packed to the futility of massive resistance to desegregation that it will inevitably
open the door to negotiation. Per King freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must
be demanded by the oppressed. Thomas Aquinas said an unjust law is a human law that is not rooted
in eternal law and natural law. King went further to say; how can you advocate breaking some laws
and obeying others? The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of laws: just and unjust. I
would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility
to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree
with St. Augustine that an unjust law is no law at all. For instance, are we able to accept blows
without retaliating?

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s (MLK) was a every influential person he led the civil rights movement
to bring equality to people regardless of race. He had a strong belief in nonviolence this is why
MLK fought for the civil rights movement which lead the society we have today. His dream was

segregation, people still judge and still think wrong about others. In this paper show that his dream

however there are some states that have not embrace equality. The ' 'I Have a Dream Speech ' ' given

words proved to be a touchstone for understanding the social and political upheaval of the time and
gave the nation a vocabulary to express what was happening. In the speech Dr.King talks about how
he wants racial Justice and an integrated society. In the "Letter From Birmingham Jail," ' Dr. King is

The Stages Of Dr. Martin Luther King And Lebron James
oseph Campbell once said, "A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger
than usual". Heroes have always been known in comic books, movies, or television with characters
such as Captain America, the Hulk, Spiderman, or Wonder Woman. These fairy tale characters fight
evil villains day and night to protect the people and save the world. What about the non–super
powered heroes who fought or are presently fighting for the greater of mankind? These heroes are
giving of themselves and defying all odds. The heroes I speak of are Lebron James and Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. LeBron James is an all– star basketball player and humanitarian who has donated
millions of dollars to charities along with his generous giving with the James Family Foundation to
families in need. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a pioneer of the Civil Rights Movement and stood
for justice, equality, and fair treatment of the African American race. This essay will elaborate on
how Lebron James, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and Beowulf represent the the essence of Campbell's
hero stages and what being a hero means. Heroism has numerous meanings whether defined by
physical, mental or acts of bravery. In comparison to Campbell's Heroes With A Thousand Faces,
this section will address Lebron James, my hero and his relevance to Campbell's hero stages. Lebron

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. left a legacy behind like no man before him; his presence was one that
completely reshaped the nation. Through his role in the advancement of civil rights by utilizing
non–violent methods, he was able to break down the racial barriers built by prejudice and
discrimination. Many of his ideals and principles are timeless. His widespread vision is still applied
to resolve many issues in today's society. The six principals of nonviolence from Dr. King are great
tools to resolve many problems like racism, an unequal justice system and a huge financial gap that
minorities experience.
There is no simple approach to create a world in which men and women of all distinctive races and
backgrounds can live together equally in harmony because of their various viewpoints. If such a
world is created in our lifetime, it must be accomplished through nonviolence which fabricates
companionship and comprehension. It will be accomplished by persons who have the courage to put
an end to suffering by willingly suffering themselves rather than inflict suffering upon others.
Prejudice and discrimination can only be solved by dismissing the racism, materialism and brutality
that has characterized Western civilization progress. By removing these restraints, society can begin
to move in a positive direction of a universe of fellowship, collaboration and peace.

Mahatma Gandhi And Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In controversial times people need someone whose ideas will open up a path of unprejudiced views
and just rules. The ideas that this ultimate figure of judges preaches need to hold within them a
message of peace, as well as the reassurance that even within the darkest of times, compassion and
love will thrive. The person in question needs to show an example of good character and at the same
time; be unshakeable in the face of danger. Mahatma Gandhi was a great example of what the ideas
of an unbreakable spirit can do to change the world. Like Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
guaranteed that just like the Indian man; the only way that his fellow African Americans will
achieve freedom was by peacefully protesting and showing to the rest of the world that just like any
American citizen, they wanted nothing more than to live a peaceful life. Although both King and
Gandhi share a strong passion for pacifist protesting, they also share evident differences. One of
them is their contracts with religious beliefs. Mahatma Gandhi, a man with an unbreakable will that
even when in the face of danger, did not frighten away, is one of these creates leaders that not only
give himself to his people but to the world.Born of a father that knew his way with words and a
religious mother, Gandhi had almost the best education a young boy of his class could ever have.

The Development Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay
The development of human being during the entire course of life, focus on biological and
psychological growth (Berk, 2010). Human development hold several outcomes that are altered by
both positive and negative influences. Genetic (nature) and environmental (nurture) influences place
significant impact on human development. In fact, Pinker (2004) submits that behavior is the result
of a complex collaboration among inheritance and environmental factors in human development,
ultimately supporting that nature–nurture work collectively (Pinker, 2004).
This paper aimed to observed the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through concepts, approaches
and theories of development. Hereditary and environmental influences, milestones and the impact of
diversity concerning King's cognitive, physical and social–emotional development is offered.
Furthermore, classical and contemporary theories from Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget were applied
to analysis King's life. Piaget's stages of cognitive development include 4 stages: Sensorimotor
period, preoperational period, concrete operational period and formal operations period. Piaget
theory offers that a child's cognitive development encounter these four stages to understand their
world independently (Harris, 2005). Contrarily, Vygotsky theory suggest that cognitive development
involves children managing challenges through support from adults (Berk, 2010).

The Three Characteristics Of Ethos In Dr. Martin Luther King

Since the beginning of civilization communication is considered to be one of the most essential
skills. Those who are capable of mastering such skill end up having a position of leadership among
others. In order to transmit an idea or persuade an audience it is necessary vast knowledge on how
to conduct the speech and maintain the listener's/ readers attention. Many techniques exist in order
to master such skill. One of the most used approach is referred as the three artistic proof, based upon
the principles of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Such method was developed by Aristotle around the 4th
century BC. In a wide variety of well–known speeches until modern time these three concepts ...

Few examples of Pathos in MLK letter are "While confined here in the Birmingham city jail" , "we
were the victims of a broken promise" ,"our hopes had been blasted, and the shadow of deep
disappointment settled upon us" and "dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of
understanding and brotherhood" . Based upon such references it possible to identify how the use of
key words and emotional tone highlights the events in which Dr King explained. In addition, the
description of the scenario and examples of immense injustice towards African Americans creates
an emotional sense to the audience, leading readers to support and sympathize with the cause.
The third elements in this method is called Logos. In this stage, the concept of logic and reason is
highly used while trying to convince the audience. While using Logos most writers uses many
historical facts and cite statistics with the purpose of showing readers how his logical arguments are
proven to be true. Logos can also be identified in the Birmingham letter in parts such as
"Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. Its ugly record
of brutality is widely known. Negroes have experienced grossly unjust treatment in the courts. There
have been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other
city in the nation" and "Lamentably, it is

Three Evils Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
" I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism
and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality" (Martin
Luther King Jr., Acceptance Speech, 1964).Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929
to Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams King in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up with his older
sister Christine King and his younger brother Daniel Williams King in Atlanta's Sweet Auburn
neighborhood. He attended a segregated High School and later went on to study at Morehouse
College for medicine and law. He had not intended to be a pastor but ended up attending Crozer
Theological Seminary, earning a Bachelor of Divinity Degree. Later, he enrolled into Boston
University, earning a doctorate in Systematic Theology. He met his wife Coretta Scott during his
time in Boston, marrying her June 18, 1953; together they had four children:Yolanda Denise King
(1955–2007), Martin Luther King III (born 1957), Dexter Scott King (born 1961) and Bernice
Albertine King (born 1963). King's major ideas revolved around nonviolence and equality. He had a
serious of three evils (Triple Evils): Poverty, Racism, and Militarism. "A second evil which plagues
the modern world is that of poverty. Like a monstrous octopus, it projects its nagging, prehensile
tentacles in lands and villages all over the world. Almost two thirds of the peoples of the world go to

Dr. Martin Luther King
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. writes this letter as a response to the clergymen, who criticized and
impeded the nonviolent campaign led by King in Birmingham. In his long letter, Marin Luther King
presents a good deal of rational reasons for why the nonviolent campaign should be done in
Southern America. He also demonstrates his unmovable determination to accomplish the goal of this
nonviolent campaign. Obviously, King intends to awake the clergymen and other opponents by this
touching letter.
From the historical aspect, King did a great job in convincing his opponents on social justice issues
with this letter, since he carried out the nonviolent campaign and successfully won over equal rights
for black people. However, leaving alone the history, I'd like to look into the language aspect in this
missive and analyze how King's words make his letter unexpectedly persuasive.
Martin Luther King argues that nonviolence campaign must be conducted in Birmingham, since this
is where all black people are treated unfairly and completely exposed to really severe social
injustices. King states in his letter: "Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in
the United States. Its ugly record of police brutality is known in every section of this country. Its
unjust treatment of Negroes in the courts is a notorious reality. There have been more unsolved
bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other city in this nation." King

Similarities Of Moses And Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In the Old Testament of the Bible and in twentieth–century America, liberation from suppression
and inequality, and the expedition of adamant people towards independence and equality prevail. At
the forefront of these political, cultural, and social movements are Moses and Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. Both men have left lasting imprints on history. In Exodus and continued in Deuteronomy,
through the leadership of Moses and his counsel of God, Moses frees the persecuted Hebrews from
their enslavement to the Egyptians, and delivers them to the Promised Land. Similarly, Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. successfully leads the Civil Rights movement to free the subjugated African
Americans of racial inequality, and deliver them to the Promised Land where there is freedom for
all. The Old Testament Prophet, Moses, and the modern day Prophet, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., are
comparable through their leadership which is evident in their devotion to their respective people,
causes, and God. Moses is an effective Prophet due to his faithfulness to God; his unification of the
Hebrews; and dedication to his mission. Like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Moses sees the harsh
persecution of his people in Egypt. Fleeing for his life after killing an Egyptian, Moses is living a
quiet life, married, tending to his children and his father–in–law's flocks. However, when God
interrupts Moses's life and calls upon him to deliver the Israelites from purgatory, Moses answers
God's call. Despite his fears,

Utopia By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

  • 1. Utopia By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1516, Thomas More, English diplomat and philosopher wrote the book entitled Utopia (More). More coined the term Utopia, an imaginary place in which the government, laws, and social conditions are perfect (Merriam–Webster.com). More's Utopia carries the idea that everyone within the utopian society does what is necessary for the good of the society. People live as equals according to perfectly obeyed rules. There is no private property and everyone works to support the group. Many definitions arise when the idea of an ideal society is mentioned. Individuals within a society possess different values and ideas, this, therefore, creates different views of what an ideal society is defined by. My ideal society would be quite different from the American society today. Civil Rights leader and social activist, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., also expressed what his ideal society depicted in his infamous speech, "I Have a Dream". He delivered this speech on August 28, 1963, on the steps of the Abraham Lincoln Memorial (Garrow). In Dr. King's ideal society, everyone would be treated equally and not discriminated against due to the color of their skin. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." Just like King's ideal society, in my Utopia everyone will be treated equally and there will be no discrimination towards skin color or gender. The government would be a ... • 2. Dreaming In Color By Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dreaming in color can bring us together as a harmonic world. Every culture is different, but in some way they all have similarities. Every culture has different traditions, and each religion has different beliefs and celebrations. Cultures are full of unique ideas. People may think that being different is unacceptable, but really it's exceptional to be in a unique and different culture. When everyone dreams in color, the world becomes peaceful and beautiful. Even though our cultures are different they are also full of love and color. If everyone believed this, the world will have a culture that is living the dream. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed in color. Unlike other people he believed in everyone. Even in the darkest times, he kept his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Legacy Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I will discuss how his leadership has impacted both America as a whole and the United States Army, as well as how Dr. King has influenced my own life as a Soldier, Military Intelligence professional, and leader. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., embodied many of the attributes that we look for in Army leaders today. Dr. King lived a life characterized by moral courage, selfless service, respect for everybody, honor, and integrity. During his time as the de facto leader of the civil rights movement, he was motivated by the plight of blacks throughout the South, both during his own time and for generations before him. Dr. King writes in his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" (1963) of his frustration over a gamut of issues: simple but persistent issues like the constant disrespect and taunting that black people faced on a daily basis; issues that affected his own family, like having to explain to his young daughter why he couldn 't take her to a local amusement park; and darker issues like vicious beatings and unprovoked lynchings and murder. His sense of empathy ran deep, for their struggle was his own. Dr. King was a leader with a distinct presence: he was known nationwide as a man with true professional bearing, always carrying himself with dignity. He insisted that both he and those involved in protests and demonstrations "conduct [their] struggle on the high plane of dignity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Discrimination In The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Negro. When people hear or see this word they often either associate it with slavery, racism, or just another term for African American. The word Negro's origin came from the Spanish and Portuguese in 1442, used to describe Africans that they encountered during their trip to India. But what makes this word so taboo is the fact that in America the word "Negro" has a long history associated with slavery, segregation, and oppression. Those exact words are also what African American's history here in America mostly consists of. Through some of these horrible times of injustices African Americans had to go through, some historical rebels stood out, one of them being the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who in response wrote an open letter whilst in a Birmingham jail to eight clergymen's concerns about a demonstration against racial segregation as printed in a local Birmingham, Alabama newspaper. In the clergymen's letter they call King's actions "unwise and untimely." In response King writes a letter which he has carefully and strongly crafted his arguments specifically concerning why he came to Birmingham, why he resorted to demonstration instead of negotiation, why his actions were not untimely, and how breaking the law can be justified. The first concern expressed in the clergymen's letter is why King was in Birmingham in the first place since Birmingham, Alabama isn't his hometown. King responds to this by pointing out the fact that he was invited to Birmingham because he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality...I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word." These famous words by the honorable Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. best capture his frame of mind and the hopes he once held for the African American people during his fight for civil rights. King was an activist, pastor, and strong leader whose actions played an integral role in the advancement of the African American people as a whole. Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929, King spent the overwhelming majority of his life leading the African American Civil Rights Movement by using his very effective non–violent approach. Based off of his strong Christian beliefs, King led a multitude of boycotts, protests, marches, and speeches over the course of his life. These include the Montgomery Movement as well as one of his most famous speeches, the "I Have A Dream" speech. Spearheading the Montgomery Boycott was just one of King's noteworthy accomplishments along the realms of non–violent direct action. Sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks after her refusal to relinquish her seat on a city bus, the Montgomery Boycott was a year–long bus boycott in protest against the unjust laws that segregated public buses (Azbell 114). King was chosen by community leaders of the Montgomery Improvement Association to lead said ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the 1950's America developed in a way that would change the entire future of the country. The civil rights movement brought the righteous anger, distress, and demand that all people be treated equally. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. advocated that people needed to take a stand and quit being patient, in order to advance democracy in America. Was King correct in believing that impatience helps to advance democracy? I argue that Dr. King was correct in demanding impatience from the African American community to achieve equality. In this paper I will be evaluating the stance that Dr. King takes on impatience by looking at Dr. King's work as well as the work of Mahatma Gandhi, Greg Weiner, Philip Fisher, Lars Svendson, and Bauman Zygmunt. Through the evaluation of other positions on the importance of patience and impatience it will be shown how Dr. King is correct in his approach to democracy through impatience. In Dr. King's book Why We Can't Wait, King addresses the current situation of 1962 and 1963 United States, as well as the history of America (King pgs. 15,16,17). He points out the mistreatment and inequality that plagued the nation. While slavery had been outlawed years ago, the structure of slavery in people's eyes had not been eliminated. In his book King states, "As the then vice–president, Lyndon B. Johnson, phrased it: 'Emancipation was a Proclamation but not a fact.' The pen of the Great Emancipator had moved the Negro into the sunlight of physical freedom, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dr. King is admired today, due to his leadership and Charisma skills, as well as his non–violence approach to solving problems. However, on Monday the 18, of January 2016, Americans all over the United States celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On the third of January each year this day is set aside for the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, (Carson, 1987). Dr. King led the boycott in Montgomery bus system that lasted over a year (Faragher et al., 2009). Due to the boycott, White and African Americans in 2016, can sit together and ride the buses together without any hostility or violence. Several movement activists today view Dr. King as one of the most conspicuous among some of the most exceptional movement tacticians, ideologues, and strategists, influential leaders in the United States (Carson, 1987). In addition, Dr. King is known as a Civil Rights leader, which stood behind President Johnson as he signed the Civil Rights Bill in 1964 (Columbia Southern University (CSU) n.d.). • 8. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Dr. Martin Luther King Jr 's words on April 3, 1968 at Mason Temple in Memphis Tennessee speaks through the ages and still grips me with an eerie feeling of prophetic conviction. King 's stirring words that night were classical pieces of rhetoric that will be preserved as a place mark for the civil rights movement. When a sick, but yet powerful King bellowed out to the audience "I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promise land!"; he was eerily suggesting that his life may possibly be ending soon but the movement continuing. This part of the speech is moving but yet stirring, and to many of the people in attendance that night, disturbing. Here is this iconic figure telling a packed congregation of weary, yet persistent people that he may not make the journey into the land that produces a brighter day and better opportunities. This likens to the biblical story of Moses. After leading the Children of Israel out of bondage for so long and tirelessly working to get them to the land of Canaan Moses is told by God that he will not be the one to lead them into the "land flowing with milk and honey" and that he will not enter therein at all. It is unnerving to think that Martin knew that his time was at hand. That he had led his people as far as he could lead them. The melancholy mood brought on by the thought of King 's premature death turns into an emotional cry of self– assurance but also a dramatic exhale and a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Paper With his constant pursuit for civil rights, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped bridge the gap between races during the 1960Õs. (It was) His unique approach of using nonviolent protests (to) helped create an awareness of the inequalities the African Americans had to endure during this time period. In 1963, King went to Birmingham, Alabama to engage in a nonviolent protest (there), yet before he could perform the (protest Ð use synonym such as rally or something) he was arrested. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He then brings up two very important facts to defend his case. The first is that there have been more unsolved bombings of African American homes and churches in Birmingham than any other place in the United States. Furthermore, on the basis of those conditions African American leaders in the community had attempted to negotiate with the cityÕs leaders, but the city leaders had refused to. King then cites Socrates on the notion that in order to make any level of accomplishment, one must raise public awareness by using nonviolent protests. These protests would create a tension in the mind of the individual and society because racism is illogical. King( then tried to) explained that even though the white moderates, though good intentioned, donÕt understand the situation in full. Moreover, to not understand the importance of the issue, then results in a lack of involvement. King felt that with the white moderates involvement was crucial to any steps forward, yet their lack of involvement would only make thier pursuit for civil liberties even more difficult. He makes a powerful argument, ÒIt is a historical fact that privileged groups sedom give up thier privileges voluntarily.Ó The significane of this quote is the theme of this letter. King (is– was) saying that African American can no longer remain idle in the hopes to been seen as equals with the whites, they must 2 now take action to achieve a mutual respect. ... • 10. Dr. Martin Luther King 's Speech Racism has always been a major problem in America. However, it was known to be the most problematic in the late 1950s. On August 28 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his infamous speech "I Have a Dream" to America. His dream highlighted the injustices of segregation and discrimination of African Americans that took place in this nation every single day. Dr. King inspired thousands despite the color of their skin, to take a stance against racism, with his powerful way with words. In his speech MLK efficaciously uses, Ethos, Pathos, and Logos by using allusions, developing credibility, in his speech to persuade all Americans to be aware of the problems with racism. By using Lincoln, King knows that he is hitting home with the half of the audience that consist of African Americans. In hopes of creating a better sense of credibility, which encourages people to accept his idea or "dream", King mentions the Declaration of Independence. Dr. king makes himself credible by challenging what citizens known as the unalienable rights. Unalienable rights, are rights that cannot be taken away from a human being. They are considered rights given to people by God himself, when they are born. In the third paragraph he quotes, 'the unalienable Rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. "This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the "unalienable Rights" of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." He uses the quote to show that the Supreme Court should be on his side. However, he then goes on to tell how even though it should be on his side it is not. "It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note." He is stating that the American government has neglected their promise to ALL of the American people. By doing this he is asking the readers to ask themselves, why has America failed to reach the expectations of equality? Why is the injustice only occurring to blacks? And most importantly, What can be done to change this? In another attempt to appear more credible, King often times quotes the bible. His use of the bible can cause an emotional response, but ... • 11. Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. Martin Luther King is a very passionate, motivating and an inspiring speaker. His "I Have a Dream" is a perfect example of pathos. His speech had so much passions that it filled the audience with so much emotions. Even though there is a strong presence of pathos, than logo and ethos. They are very much present in his speech. On August 28, 1963, on a Washington DC street filled with over 250,000 demonstrators [black and white, young and old] came together to witness Dr. Martin Luther King speaks about the unhuman treatment of the colored people in America, and to appeal for an end to the discrimination and Segregation in the United States. This peaceful gathering is now regarded as one of the pivotal point in the civil right movement in America. At a time where colored people were viewed as lesser race to the white race in America, Dr. Martin Luther King's speech was expected to rally the races together. The civil right movement can easily be viewed as a war between African–Americans and Caucasians Americans, but it reality many other races were involved, like: Hispanic and Americans, Asian Americans were also discriminated and surrogated from the Caucasian population. The cruel and merciless white police officers would issue out orders to their racists' subordinates on the powerless African–American young adults and children. He was actually awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Dr. King did many marches to protest for his peoples rights. But perhaps one of the more well known ones was the March on Washington in 1963. • 13. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On August 28, 1963, in a monumental moment in American history, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his powerful "I Have A Dream" speech in front of a crowd of over 250,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., our nation's capital. The year 1963 is of particular interest to me because it comes just 3 years after the end of the 1950s, a period that to this day receives mixed analysis when examined. To many the 1950s was considered to be America's so called 'happy days,' but to others like Martin Luther King Jr. and the thousands of civil rights protestors that followed him and other leaders, the 1950s marked a period of social injustice and racial oppression. "I have a dream..." said Dr. King "that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self–evident, that all men are created equal'" (King, 1964) It was not even a year later after delivering these famous words that on July 2nd, 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed The Civil Rights of 1964 into law which permanently ended legal discrimination against individuals based on race, gender, nationality, and religion. While we would all love to say that the story ended there as Americans graciously accepted the new laws and lived out the rest of their lives in harmony with all other Americans, that is not the case. • 14. Personal Opinion: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King was a man who demonstrated that actions spoke louder than words. Martin Luther King Jr. is someone who I consider a mediator because he was able to bring people to follow him and what he believed. What he did made it seem as he had come to this world to make a change that had never been seen, which was to have more freedom for African–Americans. During his time African–Americans had recently been given freedom, but were segregated from going to same places as the white people and he wanted to change that. The way he was able to portray himself to people was through speeches, although many were against him because he trying to change the way society treated those who were not Caucasian. He was able to persuade many, just by his speeches and nonviolent actions. Like a mediator he also was perceived as a threat to society, such as Jesus and Krishna because he wanted to change something that was right those superior, but horrible to his people.. People of color were not allowed to eat study or be in the same public places as whites. Martin felt this had to end, the wrongful treatment against Africans. • 15. Rosa Parks And Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Throughout the 1950's and 1960's, there were many acts, movements, and anger that inspired people to fight for their rights and declare the United States as integrated and hate free. There were many people that acted for their rights and for the rest of the people that were not able to speak up. Along with these people that were able to speak publicly or privately, there were marches and boycotts. Finally, there were violent acts which took place against colored citizens which left a negative impact on America's past. The anger, passion, and drive for freedom so many citizens felt allowed the country to surpass its negative views and practices to emerge a more open and more accepting place. Of the most influential people during the civil rights movement, was Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. However, President Eisenhower is often overlooked as influential during this time but he did pass many acts and give orders to help children trying to attend school safely while the face of the nation was changing. Rosa Parks is well known for her refusal to give up her seat on the bus, but she was not the only one. There were others who did the same deed but she just so happened to be recognized for this, and it's a very positive thing she was. He made me realize how I should live my life. But no more is he a role model for me. I felt a sense of betrayal by the figure when I learned about his dark and unknown side. It was then when I learned to look both sides of the story, that there is no such thing as a perfect being in this world. Now hear me out! I am not exaggerating! This sudden understanding brought along some short–term as well as long–term effects into my life. The short– term effect that I felt was that I began to be doubtful to a person's claim of fame. I would not completely believe what that person has said or done to achieve such honor. In the long–term, the effect I felt was to research or at least check out the hidden, horrible side to them. He directs his speech to two main groups of people. The first group being those listening to the speech, and the second being those who are just around the area where he is delivering his speech. King's speech is focusing on the civil rights of the African American citizens. He talks about how poorly the other people have treated them. He uses historical documentation to back up his points. King's main concern is that if all men are created equally, then why are men of color being treated differently. His main purpose in writing and delivering this speech is to change the thoughts people have developed about African Americans. He appeals to emotions as well as logic, and uses some appeal to his credibility as a writer and speaker. An example of deductive reasoning in this speech is in the fourth paragraph when he says, "This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the 'unalienable rights' of 'Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness'" (King, 1963, para. 4) In this argument, he emphasizes the fact that the Declaration of Independence states that black men are also men. Therefore, logically, they should be given the same rights that white men get. Another example of deductive reasoning is all throughout paragraph six when King is explaining that now is the time for change in the country (King, 1963, para. 6). He is logically going from the general picture of "Now is the time to make justice a reality," (King, 1963, para. 6) to small conclusions on why this change needs to happen. Using this type of reasoning allows King to supply sufficient evidence to his claims and therefore add logos to his speech. In fact, the use of either inductive or deductive reasoning adds to the logos if a speech. Logos is a rhetorical device that is used to get the audience to believe the speaker because what the speaker is saying is logical and there is evidence to support the conclusion. An example of logos in this speech is when he states, "America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked 'insufficient funds'" (King, 1963, para. 4). Civil Disobedience, By Dr. Martin Luther King There have been many people that have partaken in the act of not following, or breaking a law that they personally have deemed unjust throughout history, or taken part in civil disobedience . Socrates as well as Dr. Martin Luther King have done this. But the question of whether or not we should be required to follow a law that one personally believes is unjust is very hard to answer. Nevertheless, I believe that we should in fact be able to disobey a law and or a decision that we consider to be unjust. However, in saying this there are some guidelines that come with this. I am not saying that one should just have a complete disregard for the law, which would result in chaos and there would not be a civil society. Nonetheless, what I am ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Subsequently, if a person or group decides that the law is unjust, then they must decide to react appropriately. However, in the case of where the unjust law that is trying to be undone will result in a greater injustice, the law should remain the same and the group or person must not act to try and change the law. Moving on, there is a vast difference between a group of people participating in civil disobedience, where a person or group breaks the law with the knowledge an acceptance of the consequence, and just sheer violence in response to an unjust law. The whole point of participating in a protest against an unjust law is to bring awareness and conversation about it and try and rectify the unjust law with a just one. Therefore, to involve one's self with a violent unjust act against the unjust law you are trying to protest against out of spite and do not want to accept the consequences against the people that are enforcing this unjust law will result in a loss of legitimacy for your protest. Socrates puts it in a very simple way, "Nor must one, when wronged, inflict wrong in return" Socrates saying this gives a reason why he does not try to bribe his way out of prison. So, this is the difference between someone who is breaking the law on purpose who wants sincere change, and someone who is just retaliating out of anger of the unjust law. The U.S. government believed that if they were not in control of Vietnam, the spread of communism and their downfall in dominance would still be an issue. Since the Vietnamese people were in search for their independence, they wouldn't accept being under the control of another nation, therefore, for the United States, they saw violence as their only solution. During such draconian times, many thought that there might not be a solution to end the violence and misery, except for King. In King 's letter from Birmingham, he said the purpose of our direct action program is to create a situation so crisis–packed to the futility of massive resistance to desegregation that it will inevitably open the door to negotiation. King went further to say; how can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others? The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. Those who are capable of mastering such skill end up having a position of leadership among others. In order to transmit an idea or persuade an audience it is necessary vast knowledge on how to conduct the speech and maintain the listener's/ readers attention. Many techniques exist in order to master such skill. One of the most used approach is referred as the three artistic proof, based upon the principles of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Such method was developed by Aristotle around the 4th century BC. In a wide variety of well–known speeches until modern time these three concepts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Few examples of Pathos in MLK letter are "While confined here in the Birmingham city jail" , "we were the victims of a broken promise" ,"our hopes had been blasted, and the shadow of deep disappointment settled upon us" and "dark depths of prejudice and racism to the majestic heights of understanding and brotherhood" . Based upon such references it possible to identify how the use of key words and emotional tone highlights the events in which Dr King explained. In addition, the description of the scenario and examples of immense injustice towards African Americans creates an emotional sense to the audience, leading readers to support and sympathize with the cause. The third elements in this method is called Logos. In this stage, the concept of logic and reason is highly used while trying to convince the audience. While using Logos most writers uses many historical facts and cite statistics with the purpose of showing readers how his logical arguments are proven to be true. Logos can also be identified in the Birmingham letter in parts such as "Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. Its ugly record of brutality is widely known. Negroes have experienced grossly unjust treatment in the courts. There have been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other city in the nation" and "Lamentably, it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Three Evils Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. " I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality" (Martin Luther King Jr., Acceptance Speech, 1964).Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 to Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams King in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up with his older sister Christine King and his younger brother Daniel Williams King in Atlanta's Sweet Auburn neighborhood. He attended a segregated High School and later went on to study at Morehouse College for medicine and law. He had not intended to be a pastor but ended up attending Crozer Theological Seminary, earning a Bachelor of Divinity Degree. Later, he enrolled into Boston University, earning a doctorate in Systematic Theology. He met his wife Coretta Scott during his time in Boston, marrying her June 18, 1953; together they had four children:Yolanda Denise King (1955–2007), Martin Luther King III (born 1957), Dexter Scott King (born 1961) and Bernice Albertine King (born 1963). King's major ideas revolved around nonviolence and equality. He had a serious of three evils (Triple Evils): Poverty, Racism, and Militarism. "A second evil which plagues the modern world is that of poverty. Like a monstrous octopus, it projects its nagging, prehensile tentacles in lands and villages all over the world. Almost two thirds of the peoples of the world go to bed hungry at night. They are undernourished, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. writes this letter as a response to the clergymen, who criticized and impeded the nonviolent campaign led by King in Birmingham. In his long letter, Marin Luther King presents a good deal of rational reasons for why the nonviolent campaign should be done in Southern America. He also demonstrates his unmovable determination to accomplish the goal of this nonviolent campaign. Obviously, King intends to awake the clergymen and other opponents by this touching letter. From the historical aspect, King did a great job in convincing his opponents on social justice issues with this letter, since he carried out the nonviolent campaign and successfully won over equal rights for black people. However, leaving alone the history, I'd like to look into the language aspect in this missive and analyze how King's words make his letter unexpectedly persuasive. Martin Luther King argues that nonviolence campaign must be conducted in Birmingham, since this is where all black people are treated unfairly and completely exposed to really severe social injustices. King states in his letter: "Birmingham is probably the most thoroughly segregated city in the United States. Its ugly record of police brutality is known in every section of this country. Its unjust treatment of Negroes in the courts is a notorious reality. There have been more unsolved bombings of Negro homes and churches in Birmingham than in any other city in this nation." King uses this fact to support ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Similarities Of Moses And Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the Old Testament of the Bible and in twentieth–century America, liberation from suppression and inequality, and the expedition of adamant people towards independence and equality prevail. At the forefront of these political, cultural, and social movements are Moses and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Both men have left lasting imprints on history. In Exodus and continued in Deuteronomy, through the leadership of Moses and his counsel of God, Moses frees the persecuted Hebrews from their enslavement to the Egyptians, and delivers them to the Promised Land. Similarly, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. successfully leads the Civil Rights movement to free the subjugated African Americans of racial inequality, and deliver them to the Promised Land where there is freedom for all. The Old Testament Prophet, Moses, and the modern day Prophet, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., are comparable through their leadership which is evident in their devotion to their respective people, causes, and God. Moses is an effective Prophet due to his faithfulness to God; his unification of the Hebrews; and dedication to his mission. Like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Moses sees the harsh persecution of his people in Egypt. Fleeing for his life after killing an Egyptian, Moses is living a quiet life, married, tending to his children and his father–in–law's flocks. However, when God interrupts Moses's life and calls upon him to deliver the Israelites from purgatory, Moses answers God's call. Despite his fears, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
