Levi Jeans: Showing What Women Are Made of: an...
Many women believe Mary Kay Ashe said it best when she observed, "While clothes may not make
the woman, they certainly have a strong effect on her self–confidence – which, I believe, does make
the woman." (educators.fidm.com). This observation simply means that a woman's appearance can
have a tremendous influence on how she really views herself. Two advertisements from the world
famous Levi's Jean Company portrays this concept of self. One advertisement from a Seventeen
magazine published in 1954 presents four women standing in a posed position, showcasing various
types of Levi clothing attire. Another advertisement, published fifty years later, in 2009 in the W+K
magazine presents a different view by drawing the viewers attention to ... Show more content on

This brings out her inner rebel and proves that she is a young girl with an immense amount of self–
confidence. Also, it is evident in the advertisements that society's view on what an attractive woman
looks like has changed throughout the years. In the 1954 advertisement, the women look older and
have shorter hair. In the current ad, the woman is much younger and thinner, with very long, straight
hair and appears more casual than the 1954 advertisement. The 2009 ad advertise a more casual
Levi's, which also shows that the clothing style itself has drastically changed over time. An evolving
concept of female independence is conveyed through the various images in each advertisement. The
1954 advertisement features four women standing outside of a building, wearing casual Levi's attire.
Each of the four women are very conservative in their clothing style, wearing high waist pants and
showing hardly any skin. This adds a polite and old–fashioned feel to the advertisement. The 2009
advertisement represents a more modern day clothing style by showing the back view of a topless
young lady, wearing only muddy and baggy Levi jeans. In the 1954 advertisement, each woman
demonstrates an affirmative attitude with her pleasant facial expression, which brings about this
optimistic feeling of self the women have established. Although the facial expression is hidden in
the 2009 advertisement by only allowing the

Essay On Rainbows End
The ability for an individual to realise the concept of discovery and rediscovery as a personal
journey can be difficult to explore from a position of privilege but even more from a position of
inequality and discrimination. An individual's quest for a personal discovery is a long and difficult
process but can be unlocked from within their self despite social constraints. This notion is explored
in the play 'Rainbows End' (2005) by Jane Harrison, and the short film '23 Degrees 5 Minutes'
(2011). In Rainbows End, the desire to be recognised as a woman is accredited to the surrounding
social culture in which she is a minority, being a young Indigenous woman. The notions of an
insufficient education, and racial mistrust are explored in the play ... Show more content on

In the context of a 1950's Aboriginal household, which were commonly not afforded education in a
Western sense and largely impoverished, we see the transformation of Gladys from being a woman
who wants to learn about factual problems in her surrounding environment, to being someone who
is confident enough to express who she really is by realising that in order to find knowledge
elsewhere she first had to find who she really was to transform from a girl to a woman. The repeated
historical allusion to the queen by Gladys in the prologue of the play shows that Gladys idolised
powerful white women and dreamed of someday being one herself. We can see this in the Gladys'
quote "It's a moment I'll remember...to see our pretty, young monarch and the Duke. I'm not going to
miss it for all the tea in China" However, we can clearly see the transformation of Gladys
throughout the play as she stops alluding to the queen towards by end of the play, as she has
completed her journey into finding her identity as a strongly independent Indigenous woman .
Gladys' quote "Your majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second. We demand suitable housing to the
Aboriginal people", Towards the end of the play shows this. This makes the reader understand that

Analysis of Anti-Smoking Advertisements
Analysis of Anti
Smoking Advertisements
Smoking is becoming more and more of a problem throughout the world. Smoking cigarettes used
to symbolize wealth and status in society. Today, smoking seems to be more of a trend to look
"cool". It is very much advertised against on television today. Since tobacco companies don't
advertise on television the anti
smoking companies already have a huge step ahead. More people
than past decades have access to television and see these advertisements more than the ones tobacco
companies post at businesses that sell tobacco products. Most people just walk right on by those
kinds of ads with no idea that they are even there. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another technique that goes along with the last example would be weasel words. In
Figure 2, the words at the bottom of the ad say "Kill A Cigarette and Save A Life. Yours."
Weasel words means using words to suggest a positive meaning. Just because you smoke does that
mean you're going to die? Of course not. The words were placed in the ad to give a little more
dramatic effect to the message they're trying to portray.
About 19 percent of all adults in the United States were current smokers in 2011
(Centers for Disease). That is about 43.8 billion people in the United States who reported to have
smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime, and who at the time of the interview, reported to
have smoked on a regular basis. Every day about one thousand people under the age of 18 become
daily cigarette smokers (Substance Abuse). From that information you can infer that the percentage
of all adults that smoke today is most likely more than 20 percent. Tobacco companies use many
forms of advertising techniques to get their customers and the anti
smoking or anti
tobacco
companies and campaigns use the opposite techniques. They use facts and statistics to get their point
across. They want people to know what they are actually doing when they smoke a cigarette. That is

Film Analysis about Women in the Movie Pretty Woman Essay
The Hollywood movie Pretty Woman (1990) is about a prostitute in Hollywood, marrying an
extremely rich businessman, in spite of her mutual distrust and prejudice. The movie contains the
basic narrative of the Cinderella tale: through the love and help of a man of a higher social position,
a girl of a lower social status moves up to join the man at his level.
Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) in Pretty Woman comes from a small town in Georgia, and works as a
prostitute on the streets of Hollywood to support herself. Although Vivian's social position is very
low, she has a strong sense of personal dignity and independence. Even though sometimes she have
to stand by the street with empty stomach to wait for clients, Vivian and her friend Kit still ... Show

The movie gives the message that women must do acknowledge their responsibilities towards
themselves, which can and should never be neglected or postponed for the sake of anyone or
anything. Nothing in this world is worth sacrificing your own aspirations for. A person's greatest
assets are self–respect, dignity and individuality. Woman should safeguard her identity by not letting
her individuality get submerged and by keeping her priorities intact all her life and creating a place
for herself.
I think that the movie keeps the gender role stereotyping unchanged. It reflects certain conservative
trends of the decade during which it was made, the influence of feminist ideology as well as some
commonly recognized American values, for example, individualism and self–reliance. Even if this
movie is produced by male filmmakers in the conservative Reagan era the profound influence of
feminist ideology can be traced in most of the following issues.
1. Work Opportunity
In the movie Pretty Woman, which is not set in a conventional work place, we can still find working
women everywhere: in the hotel, in the stores, and in offices
2. The Sisterhood
Movie shows the betrayal or unfavorable depiction of the sisterhood, an important concept in
feminist ideology, emphasizing that women are bound in a communal oneness. The movie

No Chicksbeforedicks Magazine Analysis
Outrageous isn't it? People seriously can't be that mean right? Unfortunately, this happens to
enormous amounts of women all over the world. Society has forced us, women especially, into
boxes, pretty, ugly or fake. We are told to cover our natural faces with makeup, because one pimple
being shown is horrifying, but then, when we desperately try to cover it up and "fit in", we're called
fake. Standards on girls are extremely unhealthy, and it is vital to women's safety and health that
everyone realises this. We have decided the best way to raise awareness and hopefully put an end to
this issue, is by creating a magazine. Our magazine is titled '#ChicksBeforeDicks" and is a satirical
take on the typical fashion magazines – one of the biggest contributors to creating these unfair
standards . Our title is a parody of the male phrase "Bro's before Ho's" which appeals to the target
audience and also expands on the satirical nature of the magazine. In order for this magazine to be
successful, and to reach a large audience, the design choices made while creating the front cover are
vital. For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Society has caved us into boxes, for example, Kim Kardashian. She's easily hailed as one of the
most attractive women alive, but this is all because of her flawless makeup, her big butt, and her big
boobs. However, even though we are conditioned to believe that this is the definition of beauty, if
we try to jump from the ugly box to the pretty box by following Kim, we are deemed "fake". This
puts incredible pressure on all women to have clear skin, to have flawless eyebrows, to have
perfectly contoured faces, without the use of makeup. In reality, women should be focused on being
happy, and not what other people think. So through the publishing of this magazine, women will feel
happier and healthier being free of these ridiculous boxes

Literary Analysis Of The Yellow Wallpaper
Escaping the Wallpaper "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Gilman is a short story about a
woman who is suffering from postpartum depression. Her husband, the doctor, is attempting to
make her well by moving her to a colonial house for the summer while their house is under repairs.
Being a doctor and doctor's wife, the narrator and her husband were part of the upper middle class.
This short story takes place in a time when women were confined in their roles in society. In her
short story "The Yellow Wallpaper," Gilman uses narrative technique and symbolism to develop the
theme that women are oppressed in their roles in marriage and society. Gilman's short story is
written in a unique way. The woman suffering from depression is the protagonist who narrates the
story through a series of journal entries, making her the first person narrator. This is significant
when it comes to understating the theme, as her first person journal entries enable the audience to
see her thoughts and feelings throughout the story. In the beginning, the audience is given insight
into the narrator's stress at the fact that she is powerless to do anything since her husband doctor is
the one with the final say. As narrator sums up her predicament, "If a physician of high standing, and
one's own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but
temporary nervous depression – a slight tendency – what is one to do?" (Gilman 364). The narrator

The Concept Of Sexuality In Maya Angelou's Phenomenal Woman
Phenomenal Woman is a poem written by an American poet, activist and a storyteller, Maya
Angelou. Phenomenal Woman boasts the powerful and captivating beauty and sexuality of the
speaker that attracts men to her. This sexuality includes her independence as well as confidence
through all types of cultural norms. Including moral, familial, religious and economic. The concept
of sexuality tends to be influenced by these aspects.
Interestingly, Maya Angelou's biography contradicts with her poem. As during her youth, she had
been sexually assaulted by her mother's lover. Ironically in her poem, it talks about a powerful
woman who is filled with confidence and ambitions in life. Which also does give an impression of a
tremendously strong woman. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These visual imageries give an impression of the speaker's appearance. The imagery portrays
confident and proud women when she describes the women. She also exploits visual imagery so that
people can picture her image as somebody who can embrace herself well in spite of her race and
color.
The poem further appears to have some sort of musical lyrics, which is linked to Angelou's
background as a dancer. This musical tone is evident the refrain and rhyme of the poem. The
musical lyric is further seen in the use of words with the same number of syllables at the start of
every line of a stanza for instance "The sun of my smile/The flash of my teeth and others all have
five syllables. The poet also assumes an ironic tone as illustrated by her judgment of the world's
perception of a perfect woman and her own understanding of an ideal woman.
The poem's overall structure is also similar to natural curves of a woman, which further stresses its
theme. The use of alliteration devices is also evident in the line, "Pretty women wonder", which
explains the contrast between world's view of a pretty woman and her own view (Angelou 1).
Furthermore, the last line in all stanzas is used to express the fact that the speaker is truly a
phenomenal woman. There's no doubt about that

Marge Piercy's Barbie Doll
Marge Piercy's "Barbie Doll" portrays a young girl's life as she matures and learns about society's
norm regarding beauty. The moment the girl grows into puberty is also the same moment she gets
pulled into society's perception of beauty. Piercy's "Barbie Doll" reveals that society's view/norm of
beauty is only skin deep. In the final stanza of "Barbie Doll," Piercy indicates to his readers that due
to society's norm/view of beauty people feel the need to change their physical appearance in order to
look pretty also well as to be called pretty. Critic Ira Mark Milne argues the following "The dolls,
stove, iron and lipstick are all traditional playthings for young girls, but they are also markers of an
identity in the making, the things that young girls grow to idenitfy with their own social roles"(35).
This is true "Barbie Doll" describes how the girl grows up with toys that start to portray society's
role of woman "and miniature GE stoves and irons" indicates that a woman place is in the kitchen.

Piercy's use of word choice adds to the imagery presented throughout the poem. The narrator reveals
the best of Piercy's imagery in third and final stanza of "Barbie Doll." Readers get the imagery that
young girl was happy with herself but society does not view her the same. She, the young girl, was
just a "fat nose on thick legs." She was advised to fit into society's norm and become something she
wasn't "exercise, diet, smile and wheedle." The most vivid imagery in the third stanza is when the
narrator reveals that the young girl becomes tired of being who she really is and surrenders to fit into
society, "So she cut off her nose and her legs/and offered them up." Another vivid imagery comes in
the final stanza: "In the casket displayed on satin she lay/ with the undertaker's cosmetics painted on,

Maya Angelou Pretty Woman
The song "Pretty Woman" talks of a guy meeting a beautiful looking female. The song is similar but
cannot be compared to the meaning of a poem by Maya Angelou. Her poem Phenomenal Woman,
talks about how she is not a "pretty woman," yet that does not stop the men from looking and
wondering about her. Maya Angelou uses imagery, tone, and the title to describe her view of herself
compared to the "pretty woman" Imagery in the poem Phenomenal Woman is important. Maya
Angelou uses imagery in the poem because the speaker is comparing herself, a regular woman, to
the way media suggest woman should look. She uses this literary technique in each stanza,
especially in the second stanza of the poem, describing how men react to her and not the "pretty
woman." "Then they swarm around me, hive of honey bees" (lines 19–20), creating an example of
imagery saying that wherever the speaker ends up men began to surround her. In all of the stanzas,
almost in the middle of each one, the speaker describes herself, "It's in the arch of my back, the sun
of my smile, the ride of my breast, the grace of my style" (lines 38–41). This quote explains the
speaker's quality which allows the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

introduces me to the lyrical quality of language, it natural rhythm, its musicality and beauty of the

beat to it to make it interesting. The poem's natural rhythm gives the feeling of enlightenment by
reading the first line in the first stanza. "Pretty woman wonder where my secret lies. I'm not cute or
built to suit a fashion model's size" (lines 1–2), giving a lyrical quality to the poem while creating a
prideful tone for the speaker. She is proud that she can't fit in the media's ideal of woman. Just like
the tone, the title, Phenomenal Woman, also has some qualities of its

Essay on EMMA,(Jane Austen) Miss Bates character analysis
In the novel Emma, the author, Jane Austen, uses many different techniques to characterize Miss
Bates as a woman with no intellect, but a very kind heart. Miss Bates in a humorous character who
is loved and loving.
Austen's diction is one such technique used to characterize Miss Bates. Miss Bates is a "contented"
old woman with certain "cheerfulness" to her nature. Miss Bates always has good intentions and is
always a happy, joyful woman. Her good will towards others makes her such a popular woman even
though she has no husband and no physical beauty. Miss Bates had a splendid "simplicity" about
her, and everyone in the town of Highbury enjoyed her "grateful" spirit. Miss Bates appreciates the
small things in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She did have some wisdom, though. Miss Bates was not totally ignorant. Indeed, there is much
practical wisdom, genuine concern, and touching kindness peppered throughout her humble flow of
eager–to–please manner. She had trouble recognizing when she was doing or saying something
wrong. On the other hand, Miss Bates is a "great talker upon little maters" and was "full of harmless
gossip" that she wants everyone to know. Miss Bates is the spreader of town news and is interested
in everyone's affairs, another reason her neighbours might have found her annoying at times. Even
though Miss Bates is silly and meddles in everyone's lives, she is a harmless old woman who is
loved very much for her generous nature and for the kindness she always offered other people.
Jane Austen frequently uses indirect characterization and this is very evident in the description of
Miss Bates. Instead of saying Miss Bates is an unmarried, poor, old, ugly woman, a spinster, Austen
chooses to write, "Miss Bates is neither young, handsome, rich or married." It is as if Jane Austen
wants you to like Miss Bates even thought she is lacking quite a few of the characteristics needed in
order to be deemed likeable in her society. The ideal woman in Miss Bates' society is young, pretty,
and married or with plans to marry. Miss Bates does have one characteristic most popular women
had in Highburry.

Mindset Seduction Research Paper
When it comes to anything having to do with attracting or dealing with women, mindset plays a
crucial role in determining what kind of results that you're going to get. All you have to do is take a
quick look at the guys who are successful at getting women and then compare that with the guys
who aren't, and you can easily see that they definitely do have a much different mindset. See, most
men assume that in order to seduce women, you have to develop some amazing skill that no one else
has, and that is not really the way that it's.
Seduction is all about having rapport and creating massive attraction with a woman. If you can get
rapport with a woman, but you can't make her feel a massive amount of attraction, then you
probably do not have much of a chance of being able to seduce her. And if you create massive
sexual attraction, but at the same time you do not have much of any rapport, then you probably
aren't going to be able to seduce her, either.
So, where does the mindset come into play?
Yet another helpful thing pertaining to this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And to do this, you need to have the mindset where you really believe that you're a highly desirable
guy. If you walk around thinking that you're just an average nobody, how's that going to work to

seduce women.
After the mindset shifts, then you need to learn the techniques.
I would be kidding you if I were to imply that just having the right mindset would make every
woman you came across want you. If only it were that easy, right? Once you have the right mindset,
you also have to learn the right techniques that are going to make a woman want to be seduced by
you. See, you really can't seduce a woman unless she wants to be seduced by you, and with the right
techniques, you can make that happen pretty

At first Edward did seem somewhat evasive toward Vivian, so I can agree he was distance. I think
this was because he had just broken up with his girlfriend. The story he told Vivian, he just needed
someone to talk to and no strings attached. Now, who would believe that line, knowing this man has
money. I do think that Edward only wanted company at first, but when he looked at Vivian in that
pretty red dress, that may have changed his mind. He did not see a prostitute, he seen a pretty
woman.
I agree the Vivian did bring out the best in Edward, she could make him laugh, even in despite of his
breakup. Eventually intimacy did take place. Edward was falling for Vivian once he got to know her,
and she warmed up to him. There was a lot of chemistry between them.
The critic is right when he says– "It's easy to read the film as a one–step–back anti–feminist parable
in which the woman is tamed by materialism and the high life provided by Prince Charming, but
Roberts is do funny and engaging that she bypasses such concerns and makes us realize that Vivian

Examples Of Foils In Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet Foil The renowned William Shakespeare is very well known for his frequent use
of foils in his works of literature. Merriam Webster defines a foil as a verb that "enhances by
contrast." This technique is very prominent in Romeo and Juliet, as it used amongst multiple
characters in the story, to make their characteristics more obvious. One of the most popular foils in
Romeo and Juliet is the Nurse and Lady Capulet. Lady Capulet is a woman of status and nobility.
The Nurse is a commoner and is very outspoken with a biting sense of humor. Lady Capulet is
regarded as a distant and refined woman. In act I scene III of Romeo and Juliet, Lady Capulet calls
the nurse to bring in Juliet. When Juliet arrives, Lady ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

also argued that Lady Capulet is not much of a mother either, "Though Lady Capulet conceived
Juliet, she fails as a complete motherly figure for her" (Beckner). She is also a very proper woman
and does not appreciate the nurse's crude manner of speaking, "enough of this. I pray thee hold thy
peace." During this scene, the refined manner of Lady Capulet is very evident because of how
contradicting the nurse is to refinement. The Nurse is a very vulgar woman, who is much louder
than Lady Capulet. "But, as I said, when it did taste the wormwood on the nipple of my dug and felt
it bitter, pretty fool, to see it tetchy and fall out with the dug!" This line from the Nurse, addressing

Essay about A Review of the Opening Sequence of Pretty Woman
A Review of the Opening Sequence of Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman is a romantic comedy, which is based on the stories of Cinderella, the Prince and the
Pauper and My fair lady. The film was produced in 1990 and directed by Garry Marshall. It is set in
the Hollywood hills and the rough Hollywood Boulevard. Richard Gere and Julia Roberts play the
two main characters, Vivien Ward and Edward Lewis. Edward is a wealthy man who is respected
and admired by others. Whereas Vivien is a lot poorer. Her only way of earning money is by her job
as a prostitute in Hollywood Boulevard.

They are also wearing lots of expensive jewellery like gold necklaces, bracelets, rings etc. Just by
looking at the people at the party you can tell straight away that they have lots of money and can

When you first see Edward he is upstairs in his office away from the party. The walls in his office
are just plain white with not a lot of decoration and he is wearing a plain grey suit which is quite
dull and lifeless this is a signifier that he is a businessman and that he doesn't like to wear bright
colourful clothes and that he prefers to stay wearing neutral colours.
In contrast the first time we see Vivien we can see straight away that she lives a completely different
lifestyle to Edward. The first part we see of her that we see is her underwear when she is just waking
up. We don't see her face until the next shot of her when she is getting out of bed. When she gets up
she puts on some jewellery but it looks very cheap and tacky, this contrasts which the type of
jewellery the people at Edward's party were wearing. Once Vivien is out of bed we see what sort of
clothes she wears at night when she is out on the Hollywood Boulevard. She puts on an all–in–one
outfit which is a white top which is very short and very tight on her. It is attached to

Essay on Oppression of Women in "The Awakening"
Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening in the opening chapter provides the argument for women's
entrapment in roles that society has forced upon them. Chopin was not just trying to write an
entertaining story but trying to convey arguments against these social injustices. Women are like
these birds trapped in these cages unable to free themselves from these imposed roles by society.
Chopin opens her novel with the a parrot in a cage repeating the same phrase over and over. The
parrot is pretty to look at, but when the bird speaks it is very annoying. This is the way women were
potrayed in the late 19th century restricted to very limited space in society, ––– "hung in a cage

A Psychoanalytic Analysis of Pretty Woman Essays
A Psychoanalytic Analysis of Pretty Woman
In the introduction to his book, The Sublime Object of Ideology, Slavoj Zizek acquaints readers with
his book's tripartite aim. He plans, among other things, to illustrate concepts fundamental to
Lacanian psychoanalysis – an intention which will serve to further his more ambitious goal "to
reactualize Hegelian dialectics by giving it a new reading" in the light of Lacanian psychoanalysis –
and "to contribute to the theory of ideology via a new reading of some well–known classical motifs"
(7). In this broad category of classical motifs associated with the theory of ideology, I have isolated
both fetishism and the commodity–form and intend to briefly illustrate some of these concepts

Technically his book, The Sublime Object of Ideology, was published in 1989, so one can only
wonder about whether Zizek would have included commentary on the quasi–Cinderella romantic
comedy, Pretty Woman, released in the following year. It certainly warrants a more exhaustive study,
but focusing briefly on a few key points in the movie – particularly in the light of theory concepts
such as ideology, fetishism, and the commodity–form – should prove equally interesting. While
some critics attacked the movie's fantastical plot – charming hooker/heroine Vivian Ward, played by
Julia Roberts, is "picked up" and essentially "rented" by troubled corporate mogul Edward Lewis,
played by Richard Gere, with the pair eventually falling in love and living "happily ever after" – it
was a complete box office success. The film has brought in 178 million dollars since its release in
1990, placing it among the top 50 grossing movies of all time (Internet Movie Database Ltd.).
Pretty Woman displays our fascination of "fetishism" of the commodity–form on multiple levels. We
have the relatively straightforward case of prostitution, for instance, where sex and the woman's

Reasoning Behind Photoshopping Epidemic
This paper will demonstrate the reasoning behind the photoshopping epidemic that exists through
advertisements, celebrity imaging, and through many other facets of one's daily life. The
enhancement of images supplies a altered sense of perfection and what ideal beauty truly looks like.
"A technique which is the mainstay of advertisement companies, of personal photo–editing, and of
image manipulation in general bears the overtones of a mannerist praxis carried over from the
sixteenth century to the twentieth–first." Advertising is the primary use to modified
images/photoshopped images and is the backbone to this silent epidemic. Advertisement is to blame
for the degradation of women. Women's progression for gender equality is being slowed down by
what is being shown on television commercials that screams to the female viewers, "Wear our
revealing products, or suffer the social backlash of not being pretty enough!" While it may appear
outlandish to say something of this magnitude, it becomes quite obvious when one looks at the facts
of advertisement and the effects that are offset by showing impossible to achieve concepts of beauty.
Advertisement, dating back to the early years where everything was spread via word by mouth has
come a long way with the technological boom in the modern age, and it is perfectly understandable
that one would feel overwhelmed with how often advertisers command the public to buy. However
the question would then become, how is advertisement so

Women were more inclined to oblige rather than experience more violence, as they had an increased

Theme Of Death In Emily Dickinson's Poems On Death
In the course of two years Emily Dickinson had written three poems on death and each of these
poems they all seem to give three different takes on how one experiences death. Emily Dickinson
was a woman who made her Christian faith the main focus of her work especially when it came to
her poems that had all been written on death. In christianity it is believed that once you die you
either go to Heaven or Hell based on how you been living your life. Dickson's views had remained
pretty consistent when it come to what happens to you after you are already deceased which
highlighted in her poems. We can also see that she was sure to organized her work in a way that had

The function of the poem seems to rhyme in the first stanza it is tomb and room, but in the next

and the other being speaking their truth. Even though these are completely opposite reasons they can
still be reliable on one another. They had died for a specific reason and it was something that they
believed in later in the poem we can see the kinsmen come in. Mentioning the kinsmen also allows
us to see the second major reference to Christianity. She says "and so as Kinsmen met a night" this
could be where they come in and gather the two people who died for their own cause.
"Because I could not stop for Death" is the last poem in which she writes on death in 1863 and stays
consistent in her final sequence of honing in her being a Christian woman. She still make sure to
include some of the practices as seen in Christianity, such as God will come and take you home
when he is ready to. "Because I could not stop for Death/ He kindly stopped for me"(II.1–2). Even

The Old Fairy Tale By Charles Perrault And The 1990s Movie...
In everyday life, people are given roles to play; doctors are to heal the wounded, officers are to
maintain order in society and teachers are to guide the youth onto the right path. In the past, each
gender had to behave a certain way, the men were the strong worker of the home, whom provided
the income for the family, while as the women were the gentle angels at home, whom took care of
the children and housework. If the women were to defy these roles, they would be look down upon
and be treated worse. However, time has change, these roles are no longer black and white; there is
no longer a certain way a woman is supposed to act, modern women are depicted differently from
the way they were in the past, this is due to the new norms in society that has been molded
throughout time. This can be proven with the old fairy tale "Cinderella" by Charles Perrault and the
1990s movie Pretty Woman directed by Garry Marshall.
To begin with, these two story and film both revolved around a woman who goes through many
challenges and then found the love of their life, but the way they are depicted as are completely
different from each other. Perrault's tale of "Cinderella" is set during the olden time. The title named
protagonist of this story is portrayed as a pretty young woman whose daily life consisted of
housework and obeying her stepmother whom was quite wicked and "haughty" (Perrault 16).
Cinderella on the other hand was a woman "of parallel goodness and sweetness" (Perrault 16) who

The Representation of Women in Pretty Woman, Thelma and Louise, and Hollywood in General
In this piece of coursework I will be writing an essay on how women are represented in media in
general and also in the films 'Pretty Woman' and 'Thelma and Louise.' I will also be writing about
how films usually use stereotypes which gives a judgement of a type of person or a group of people
which may not true.
In these two films women are represented as housewives/sex objects, for example in 'Pretty Woman'

'Pretty Women' is a fairy tale romance film. The reason why I have used this genre type is because
that it wasn't an complicated film, and also had an happy ending where everyone ended up happy,
and having what they wanted just like what would of happened in a fairy tale story. Also in 'Pretty
Woman' they have used quite a lot of stereotypes (judgement of someone that may not be true) to
describe characters. For example Vivien was dressed up like a prostitute and went into an expensive
designer clothes shop, where the workers told her to get out because they thought she didn't have
enough money for the clothes in there.
'Thelma and Louise' is about two main female characters who want to change there lifestyles. One
of the female characters murders her husband and does a runaway with the other female character to
start a new lifestyle. On this ran away they have an adventures road trip, where lots of interesting
things happen to them on their way to their new lifestyle. 'Thelma and Louise' is a feminist road
movie film. The reason why I have used this genre type is because the film is mainly taken on the
road, and also the women are after there rights and want to be treated equal. Also in 'Thelma and
Louise' they haven't used as much stereotypes as they have used in 'Pretty Woman' because 'Thelma
and Louise' was a feminist film.

The Visual Adisement Of An Advert Analysis Of Tux Soap
The visual text about the Tux Soap is an advertisement created to convince women that using Tux
Soap for their body will improve their complexion and make them appear more visually appealing.
It is targeted at women, aged between thirteen to fifty because society seems to demand that it is
essential for women to look extraordinarily beautiful and have flawless skin. The advertisement
appeals to the targeted audience as the beautiful woman on the advertisement with flawless skin
entices young and older women to want to try Tux soap.
Visual techniques evident in advertisement include the title, which conveys the message that "Most
men ask "Is she pretty? Not "Is she clever?". The title misleads women by persuading them that men
only look at aspects of beauty but not intelligence or kindness. However, it is extremely effective as
women will be attracted to the advertisement in how they can allow their beauty to be seen and
would want to read more into it. Furthermore, the dull background colours such as the light blue and
grey shades make the woman's flawless skin and her fair complexion appear more prominent and
appealing to the eye, satisfying the audience. Moreover, the advertisement includes a larger size for
the words, "Most men ask "Is she pretty?" and a smaller size is utilised for "not "Is she clever?" this
differentiation convinces the audience that being prettier is more important than being clever. It
makes us sense that beauty is more powerful than intelligence.

Movie Review : Pretty Woman Directed By Garry Marshall
The movie being reviewed is a classic romantic comedy entitled Pretty Woman directed by Garry
Marshall in 1990. Pretty Woman takes place in Los Angeles, California where a kindhearted
prostitute Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) meets an out of town millionaire Edward Lewis (Richard
Gere), and they find true love despite their differences in true fantasy fairy tale fashion and live
happily ever after. This film is particularly relevant to many aspects of our American Popular
Culture class because it addresses the differences in class system, morality, materialism, and even
gender and feminism roles. Pretty Woman began with a man yelling out from the street "Welcome to
Hollywood, What's your dream?" (Marshall, 1990). In my personal opinion, this was a major
substantive point of the overall movie prearranged by the director. Directly after the analogous fairy
tale Rapunzel rescue that Edward Lewis performed with Vivian Ward on the fire escape in the final
scene of the movie, that same man once again was walking the street yelling "Welcome to
Hollywood, What's your dream? Everybody comes here, this is Hollywood, the land of dreams!
Some dreams come true, some don't but keep on dreaming! This is Hollywood!" (Marshall, 1990).
The film in its entirety plays out a fantasy or alternate reality for those who decide to watch. In true
Cinderella fashion Edward Lewis takes Vivian Ward from rags to riches, and gives her everything
imaginable from jewelry, shopping sprees, and a taste of

Essay on Comparison of Two Paintings
For this assignment I chose two paintings that captivated me: "Nothing I do is Ever good enough"
and "Green Matisse Night Fish." When I looked first time on these pictures they looked for me very
different, but then I cached a connection between them. First of all, they were painted with the same
technique and they both have some energy inside, you can't catch it, if you just take a look on them,
but if you look carefully, you can figure out that an author had the same feeling when he was writing
them.

I don't if an author wanted to make it or not, but it included on this composition perfect! So, in my
opinion this work deserves applause.
The second painting attracts me also with a kind of incompleteness, but it gives me a free place to
dream and to continue it in my mind. The pencil at the top makes a feeling of something majestic,
like someone is inside of this picture and he doesn't care that an author already finished his work, he
just do what he wants to do, because he is invisible. I think that the pencil makes such a big feeling,
because it looks very realistic. The fish is melancholy as the lady on its body too. I like that fish's
eyes don't show any thinks, it gives you an opportunity to think about yourself. The inscription
"Green Matisse Night Fish" helps you not to go very deep inside of the painting, it sobers you. The
using of smears on the picture is similar to the first work. It makes the same feeling of carelessly.
This exhibition also has several mysterious works: "Warhol Almost Got It Right" and "Baby Can
Dance". Well, first I want to explain why the first work looks for me mysteriously. I called "Warhol"
mysterious, because it looks pretty simple. Here is only imagined a can of tomato soup. But I know
that in each painting a writer wants to explain his feelings. May be, for an author this can associates
with any life–time period, or something has changed in his life when he was eating it, I don't know!
So, for me the idea of this painting

Gender Stereotyping In Commercial Advertising
A commercial advertising a new barbeque burger for Carl's Jr/ Hardee's was first aired during the

expressing gender stereotyping in advertisements. The scene is taken place in Memphis, Tn at a
local barbeque cookoff, mid–summer in the smoldering heat two main characters walk in with very
revealing clothing. Sara Underwood, a model from Playboy as well as an actress; Emily
Ratajkowski, also a model and actress. The two exchange glances and proceed to fight over the
items on the grill, in the midst of the feud the items on the grill land on top of another, thus creating

In the novel Their Eyes were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston indicates the role of gender and
how men are represented as superior beings compared to women. Janie represents the female

Hurston discusses how the role of labor is represented differently for women in the eyes of men and
how women are treated as if they are lower than men; and lastly how black men are treated lower
than white men using black women as the source for their empowerment. Janie is categorized in the
novel as a woman with very minimal rights Hurston discusses how the role of labor is represented

In response to Mister Killicks, Janie says "'Ah'm just as stiff as you is stout, if you can stand to git
no dinner. 'Scuse my freezolity, Mist' Killicks, but Ah don't mean to chop de first chip.'" (27). This
response to Mister Killicks shows how Janie doesn't feel as if she should do the hard work and labor
that he is telling her to do. Even though he is treating her the same way men would be treated, Janie
feels that she should continue doing what she does without Mister Killicks telling her what to do.
Joe Starks, Janie's second husband, believes that a woman's role is to be pretty and to do nothing but
that. For example it says "'You behind a plow! You ain't got no mo' business wid uh plow than uh

have anything to do with working more than a hog has with a holiday. This helps to create a picture
in the readers mind and also helps to make a clear comparison through the use of the literary
technique of metaphor. Joe has a different idea of a woman's proper role than Mister Killicks. When
Joe says that Janie is "A pretty doll–baby," Hurston intends the connotation to mean that women ar

Pretty Woman vs. Pygmalion Essay
In the history of literary texts, many original tales have often been appropriated decades later with a
different message or purpose in the mind of the creator. The ideas, values and plotline are redefined
in a new context to appeal to a different audience. Like all texts, both Pygmalion, written by George
Bernard Shaw and Pretty Woman, directed by Gary Marshall, reflect values, beliefs and attitudes of
the time, nearly 80 years apart.
The use of different forms highlights the different intended audiences. On one hand, Pygmalion was
a play intended for the upper echelons on society. Pretty woman was created with the intention to
blockbuster so it was consequently made into a film intended for the middle class.

To overcome the social barriers, both girls receive additional lessons on social manners from Barney
and Pickering.
As the two texts are set in different eras, the leading male characters have different reactions to the
girls' attempts to refrain from submitting to the stereotypes. Edward is a lot more emotional and
sensitive as the 1990's audience would not bear abusive behavior like Higgins. He reacts to the
defiance of the stereotype warmly saying "very few people surprise me" after he discovers Vivienne
was hiding a roll of tooth floss. On the contrary, Higgins brutally tells her to "cease this detestable
boohooing instantly". This further exemplifies the different message given in the contemporary
version.
Both protagonists ascend through social classes with the help of two men with ability to access
higher classes via profession and wealth. The film establishes Edward's social superiority by
depicting him above all the guests at his party utilising a Bird's Eye View, supporting this, his ex–
girlfriend admonishes him "you think I'm at your beck and call". However, he can see below him but
he cannot break out of the glass window. Further supporting his inability, he becomes lost in
Hollywood requiring directions from Vivienne. The cross cutting of Vivienne and Edward
foreshadows and sets up their romance. In direct contrast, Higgins did not need saving at the
slightest, happily being a "confirmed old bachelor" as he believes that

Ethos In Advertising
Today, the media is full of marketing ploys for companies who want to sell as many products as
possible. Who the ads are targeting and what they are trying to sell are great determining factors for
what the ads will be like. It's no longer enough for ads to tell someone to buy their product because
it works. They now must be funny or scary or have someone famous plastered on it. Many ads are
also untruthful and try to trick people into buying their product. There are many different strategies
used by advertising companies to lure buyers in. The strategy of Ethos is a very popular way of
advertising. Ethos, literally meaning "character", works by establishing the credibility of a product,
seller or buyer. Many companies use ethos by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of celebrities in these shampoo ads is very important. A woman who sees one of these ads
might think that because Grace Kelly or Gisele Bündchen are beautiful and they use a certain
product, she could use that same product to be more beautiful like them. In the Pantene ad, the is no
mention of Gisele using Pantene, but her presence is enough to entice a potential buyer in. The ad
doesn't say much about the shampoo or its benefits, but it doesn't have to. In this day and age, most
people don't care about advertisements really campaigning for their product. A huge picture of
someone famous is enough to get someone to buy a product. The ad with Grace Kelly is different.
Along with a picture of the beautiful actress, the ad also provides a detailed description of what the
shampoo can do for hair. It also clearly states that Grace Kelly uses the

  • 9. Levi Jeans: Showing What Women Are Made of: an... Many women believe Mary Kay Ashe said it best when she observed, "While clothes may not make the woman, they certainly have a strong effect on her self–confidence – which, I believe, does make the woman." (educators.fidm.com). This observation simply means that a woman's appearance can have a tremendous influence on how she really views herself. Two advertisements from the world famous Levi's Jean Company portrays this concept of self. One advertisement from a Seventeen magazine published in 1954 presents four women standing in a posed position, showcasing various types of Levi clothing attire. Another advertisement, published fifty years later, in 2009 in the W+K magazine presents a different view by drawing the viewers attention to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This brings out her inner rebel and proves that she is a young girl with an immense amount of self– confidence. Also, it is evident in the advertisements that society's view on what an attractive woman looks like has changed throughout the years. In the 1954 advertisement, the women look older and have shorter hair. In the current ad, the woman is much younger and thinner, with very long, straight hair and appears more casual than the 1954 advertisement. The 2009 ad advertise a more casual Levi's, which also shows that the clothing style itself has drastically changed over time. An evolving concept of female independence is conveyed through the various images in each advertisement. The 1954 advertisement features four women standing outside of a building, wearing casual Levi's attire. Each of the four women are very conservative in their clothing style, wearing high waist pants and showing hardly any skin. This adds a polite and old–fashioned feel to the advertisement. The 2009 advertisement represents a more modern day clothing style by showing the back view of a topless young lady, wearing only muddy and baggy Levi jeans. In the 1954 advertisement, each woman demonstrates an affirmative attitude with her pleasant facial expression, which brings about this optimistic feeling of self the women have established. • 13. Essay On Rainbows End The ability for an individual to realise the concept of discovery and rediscovery as a personal journey can be difficult to explore from a position of privilege but even more from a position of inequality and discrimination. An individual's quest for a personal discovery is a long and difficult process but can be unlocked from within their self despite social constraints. This notion is explored in the play 'Rainbows End' (2005) by Jane Harrison, and the short film '23 Degrees 5 Minutes' (2011). In Rainbows End, the desire to be recognised as a woman is accredited to the surrounding social culture in which she is a minority, being a young Indigenous woman. The notions of an insufficient education, and racial mistrust are explored in the play ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the context of a 1950's Aboriginal household, which were commonly not afforded education in a Western sense and largely impoverished, we see the transformation of Gladys from being a woman who wants to learn about factual problems in her surrounding environment, to being someone who is confident enough to express who she really is by realising that in order to find knowledge elsewhere she first had to find who she really was to transform from a girl to a woman. The repeated historical allusion to the queen by Gladys in the prologue of the play shows that Gladys idolised powerful white women and dreamed of someday being one herself. We can see this in the Gladys' quote "It's a moment I'll remember...to see our pretty, young monarch and the Duke. I'm not going to miss it for all the tea in China" However, we can clearly see the transformation of Gladys throughout the play as she stops alluding to the queen towards by end of the play, as she has completed her journey into finding her identity as a strongly independent Indigenous woman . Gladys' quote "Your majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second. We demand suitable housing to the Aboriginal people", Towards the end of the play shows this. • 17. Analysis of Anti-Smoking Advertisements Analysis of Anti Smoking Advertisements Smoking is becoming more and more of a problem throughout the world. Smoking cigarettes used to symbolize wealth and status in society. Today, smoking seems to be more of a trend to look "cool". It is very much advertised against on television today. Since tobacco companies don't advertise on television the anti smoking companies already have a huge step ahead. More people than past decades have access to television and see these advertisements more than the ones tobacco companies post at businesses that sell tobacco products. Most people just walk right on by those kinds of ads with no idea that they are even there. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another technique that goes along with the last example would be weasel words. In Figure 2, the words at the bottom of the ad say "Kill A Cigarette and Save A Life. Yours." Weasel words means using words to suggest a positive meaning. Just because you smoke does that mean you're going to die? Of course not. The words were placed in the ad to give a little more dramatic effect to the message they're trying to portray. About 19 percent of all adults in the United States were current smokers in 2011 (Centers for Disease). That is about 43.8 billion people in the United States who reported to have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime, and who at the time of the interview, reported to have smoked on a regular basis. Every day about one thousand people under the age of 18 become daily cigarette smokers (Substance Abuse). From that information you can infer that the percentage of all adults that smoke today is most likely more than 20 percent. Tobacco companies use many forms of advertising techniques to get their customers and the anti smoking or anti tobacco companies and campaigns use the opposite techniques. They use facts and statistics to get their point across. They want people to know what they are actually doing when they smoke a cigarette. That is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Film Analysis about Women in the Movie Pretty Woman Essay The Hollywood movie Pretty Woman (1990) is about a prostitute in Hollywood, marrying an extremely rich businessman, in spite of her mutual distrust and prejudice. The movie contains the basic narrative of the Cinderella tale: through the love and help of a man of a higher social position, a girl of a lower social status moves up to join the man at his level. Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) in Pretty Woman comes from a small town in Georgia, and works as a prostitute on the streets of Hollywood to support herself. Although Vivian's social position is very low, she has a strong sense of personal dignity and independence. Even though sometimes she have to stand by the street with empty stomach to wait for clients, Vivian and her friend Kit still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The movie gives the message that women must do acknowledge their responsibilities towards themselves, which can and should never be neglected or postponed for the sake of anyone or anything. Nothing in this world is worth sacrificing your own aspirations for. A person's greatest assets are self–respect, dignity and individuality. Woman should safeguard her identity by not letting her individuality get submerged and by keeping her priorities intact all her life and creating a place for herself. I think that the movie keeps the gender role stereotyping unchanged. It reflects certain conservative trends of the decade during which it was made, the influence of feminist ideology as well as some commonly recognized American values, for example, individualism and self–reliance. Even if this movie is produced by male filmmakers in the conservative Reagan era the profound influence of feminist ideology can be traced in most of the following issues. 1. Work Opportunity In the movie Pretty Woman, which is not set in a conventional work place, we can still find working women everywhere: in the hotel, in the stores, and in offices 2. The Sisterhood Movie shows the betrayal or unfavorable depiction of the sisterhood, an important concept in feminist ideology, emphasizing that women are bound in a communal oneness. The movie ... • 25. No Chicksbeforedicks Magazine Analysis Outrageous isn't it? People seriously can't be that mean right? Unfortunately, this happens to enormous amounts of women all over the world. Society has forced us, women especially, into boxes, pretty, ugly or fake. We are told to cover our natural faces with makeup, because one pimple being shown is horrifying, but then, when we desperately try to cover it up and "fit in", we're called fake. Standards on girls are extremely unhealthy, and it is vital to women's safety and health that everyone realises this. We have decided the best way to raise awareness and hopefully put an end to this issue, is by creating a magazine. Society has caved us into boxes, for example, Kim Kardashian. • 29. Literary Analysis Of The Yellow Wallpaper Escaping the Wallpaper "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Gilman is a short story about a woman who is suffering from postpartum depression. Her husband, the doctor, is attempting to make her well by moving her to a colonial house for the summer while their house is under repairs. Being a doctor and doctor's wife, the narrator and her husband were part of the upper middle class. This short story takes place in a time when women were confined in their roles in society. In her short story "The Yellow Wallpaper," Gilman uses narrative technique and symbolism to develop the theme that women are oppressed in their roles in marriage and society. Gilman's short story is written in a unique way. The woman suffering from depression is the protagonist who narrates the story through a series of journal entries, making her the first person narrator. This is significant when it comes to understating the theme, as her first person journal entries enable the audience to see her thoughts and feelings throughout the story. In the beginning, the audience is given insight into the narrator's stress at the fact that she is powerless to do anything since her husband doctor is the one with the final say. As narrator sums up her predicament, "If a physician of high standing, and one's own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression – a slight tendency – what is one to do?" (Gilman 364). The narrator and her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Phenomenal Woman boasts the powerful and captivating beauty and sexuality of the speaker that attracts men to her. This sexuality includes her independence as well as confidence through all types of cultural norms. Including moral, familial, religious and economic. The concept of sexuality tends to be influenced by these aspects. Interestingly, Maya Angelou's biography contradicts with her poem. As during her youth, she had been sexually assaulted by her mother's lover. Ironically in her poem, it talks about a powerful woman who is filled with confidence and ambitions in life. Which also does give an impression of a tremendously strong woman. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These visual imageries give an impression of the speaker's appearance. The imagery portrays confident and proud women when she describes the women. She also exploits visual imagery so that people can picture her image as somebody who can embrace herself well in spite of her race and color. The poem further appears to have some sort of musical lyrics, which is linked to Angelou's background as a dancer. This musical tone is evident the refrain and rhyme of the poem. The musical lyric is further seen in the use of words with the same number of syllables at the start of every line of a stanza for instance "The sun of my smile/The flash of my teeth and others all have five syllables. The poet also assumes an ironic tone as illustrated by her judgment of the world's perception of a perfect woman and her own understanding of an ideal woman. The poem's overall structure is also similar to natural curves of a woman, which further stresses its theme. The use of alliteration devices is also evident in the line, "Pretty women wonder", which explains the contrast between world's view of a pretty woman and her own view (Angelou 1). Furthermore, the last line in all stanzas is used to express the fact that the speaker is truly a phenomenal woman. There's no doubt about that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The moment the girl grows into puberty is also the same moment she gets pulled into society's perception of beauty. Piercy's "Barbie Doll" reveals that society's view/norm of beauty is only skin deep. In the final stanza of "Barbie Doll," Piercy indicates to his readers that due to society's norm/view of beauty people feel the need to change their physical appearance in order to look pretty also well as to be called pretty. Critic Ira Mark Milne argues the following "The dolls, stove, iron and lipstick are all traditional playthings for young girls, but they are also markers of an identity in the making, the things that young girls grow to idenitfy with their own social roles"(35). Her poem Phenomenal Woman, talks about how she is not a "pretty woman," yet that does not stop the men from looking and wondering about her. Maya Angelou uses imagery, tone, and the title to describe her view of herself compared to the "pretty woman" Imagery in the poem Phenomenal Woman is important. Maya Angelou uses imagery in the poem because the speaker is comparing herself, a regular woman, to the way media suggest woman should look. She uses this literary technique in each stanza, especially in the second stanza of the poem, describing how men react to her and not the "pretty woman." "Then they swarm around me, hive of honey bees" (lines 19–20), creating an example of imagery saying that wherever the speaker ends up men began to surround her. In all of the stanzas, almost in the middle of each one, the speaker describes herself, "It's in the arch of my back, the sun of my smile, the ride of my breast, the grace of my style" (lines 38–41). Miss Bates in a humorous character who is loved and loving. Austen's diction is one such technique used to characterize Miss Bates. Miss Bates is a "contented" old woman with certain "cheerfulness" to her nature. Miss Bates always has good intentions and is always a happy, joyful woman. Indeed, there is much practical wisdom, genuine concern, and touching kindness peppered throughout her humble flow of eager–to–please manner. She had trouble recognizing when she was doing or saying something wrong. On the other hand, Miss Bates is a "great talker upon little maters" and was "full of harmless gossip" that she wants everyone to know. Miss Bates is the spreader of town news and is interested in everyone's affairs, another reason her neighbours might have found her annoying at times. Even though Miss Bates is silly and meddles in everyone's lives, she is a harmless old woman who is loved very much for her generous nature and for the kindness she always offered other people. Jane Austen frequently uses indirect characterization and this is very evident in the description of Miss Bates. Instead of saying Miss Bates is an unmarried, poor, old, ugly woman, a spinster, Austen chooses to write, "Miss Bates is neither young, handsome, rich or married." It is as if Jane Austen wants you to like Miss Bates even thought she is lacking quite a few of the characteristics needed in order to be deemed likeable in her society. The ideal woman in Miss Bates' society is young, pretty, and married or with plans to marry. Miss Bates does have one characteristic most popular women had in Highburry. ... Reasoning Behind Photoshopping Epidemic This paper will demonstrate the reasoning behind the photoshopping epidemic that exists through advertisements, celebrity imaging, and through many other facets of one's daily life. The enhancement of images supplies a altered sense of perfection and what ideal beauty truly looks like. "A technique which is the mainstay of advertisement companies, of personal photo–editing, and of image manipulation in general bears the overtones of a mannerist praxis carried over from the sixteenth century to the twentieth–first." Advertising is the primary use to modified images/photoshopped images and is the backbone to this silent epidemic. Advertisement is to blame for the degradation of women. Women's progression for gender equality is being slowed down by what is being shown on television commercials that screams to the female viewers, "Wear our revealing products, or suffer the social backlash of not being pretty enough!" While it may appear outlandish to say something of this magnitude, it becomes quite obvious when one looks at the facts of advertisement and the effects that are offset by showing impossible to achieve concepts of beauty. Advertisement, dating back to the early years where everything was spread via word by mouth has come a long way with the technological boom in the modern age, and it is perfectly understandable that one would feel overwhelmed with how often advertisers command the public to buy. Edward, a rich and successful businessman, finds Vivian, a strong–minded prostitute struggling to pay rent, on the streets of Los Angeles while looking for directions. After briefly parting ways, Edward invites Vivian into his hotel, where she is evidently very out of place. When they arrive at his penthouse, Vivian tries to initiate sex and to her surprise, Edward says he just wants to talk. Women were more inclined to oblige rather than experience more violence, as they had an increased awareness of the repercussions of insisting on condom use or refusal of certain sexual acts (Decker et al., 2013). In a different study, women that were interviewed indicated that there was a large push for no condoms, as clients felt they were safe and that it was prostitutes job to keep their bodies free of sexually transmitted infections (Hubbard & Prior, 2012). • 113. Theme Of Death In Emily Dickinson's Poems On Death In the course of two years Emily Dickinson had written three poems on death and each of these poems they all seem to give three different takes on how one experiences death. Emily Dickinson was a woman who made her Christian faith the main focus of her work especially when it came to her poems that had all been written on death. In christianity it is believed that once you die you either go to Heaven or Hell based on how you been living your life. Dickson's views had remained pretty consistent when it come to what happens to you after you are already deceased which highlighted in her poems. Mentioning the kinsmen also allows us to see the second major reference to Christianity. She says "and so as Kinsmen met a night" this could be where they come in and gather the two people who died for their own cause. "Because I could not stop for Death" is the last poem in which she writes on death in 1863 and stays consistent in her final sequence of honing in her being a Christian woman. She still make sure to include some of the practices as seen in Christianity, such as God will come and take you home when he is ready to. • 117. The Old Fairy Tale By Charles Perrault And The 1990s Movie... In everyday life, people are given roles to play; doctors are to heal the wounded, officers are to maintain order in society and teachers are to guide the youth onto the right path. In the past, each gender had to behave a certain way, the men were the strong worker of the home, whom provided the income for the family, while as the women were the gentle angels at home, whom took care of the children and housework. If the women were to defy these roles, they would be look down upon and be treated worse. However, time has change, these roles are no longer black and white; there is no longer a certain way a woman is supposed to act, modern women are depicted differently from the way they were in the past, this is due to the new norms in society that has been molded throughout time. This can be proven with the old fairy tale "Cinderella" by Charles Perrault and the 1990s movie Pretty Woman directed by Garry Marshall. To begin with, these two story and film both revolved around a woman who goes through many challenges and then found the love of their life, but the way they are depicted as are completely different from each other. Perrault's tale of "Cinderella" is set during the olden time. The title named protagonist of this story is portrayed as a pretty young woman whose daily life consisted of housework and obeying her stepmother whom was quite wicked and "haughty" (Perrault 16). The Representation of Women in Pretty Woman, Thelma and Louise, and Hollywood in General In this piece of coursework I will be writing an essay on how women are represented in media in general and also in the films 'Pretty Woman' and 'Thelma and Louise.' I will also be writing about how films usually use stereotypes which gives a judgement of a type of person or a group of people which may not true. In these two films women are represented as housewives/sex objects, for example in 'Pretty Woman' Vivien was on the bed half naked the camera, show a close up taking in her body which makes a sexy scene and usually in Hollywood films they use this technique most of the time. For example they've used ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 'Pretty Women' is a fairy tale romance film. The reason why I have used this genre type is because that it wasn't an complicated film, and also had an happy ending where everyone ended up happy, and having what they wanted just like what would of happened in a fairy tale story. Also in 'Pretty Woman' they have used quite a lot of stereotypes (judgement of someone that may not be true) to describe characters. For example Vivien was dressed up like a prostitute and went into an expensive designer clothes shop, where the workers told her to get out because they thought she didn't have enough money for the clothes in there. 'Thelma and Louise' is about two main female characters who want to change there lifestyles. One of the female characters murders her husband and does a runaway with the other female character to start a new lifestyle. On this ran away they have an adventures road trip, where lots of interesting things happen to them on their way to their new lifestyle. 'Thelma and Louise' is a feminist road movie film. The reason why I have used this genre type is because the film is mainly taken on the road, and also the women are after there rights and want to be treated equal. Also in 'Thelma and Louise' they haven't used as much stereotypes as they have used in 'Pretty Woman' because 'Thelma and Louise' was a feminist film. Levent karaoglan ... The Visual Adisement Of An Advert Analysis Of Tux Soap The visual text about the Tux Soap is an advertisement created to convince women that using Tux Soap for their body will improve their complexion and make them appear more visually appealing. It is targeted at women, aged between thirteen to fifty because society seems to demand that it is essential for women to look extraordinarily beautiful and have flawless skin. The advertisement appeals to the targeted audience as the beautiful woman on the advertisement with flawless skin entices young and older women to want to try Tux soap. Visual techniques evident in advertisement include the title, which conveys the message that "Most men ask "Is she pretty? Not "Is she clever?". The title misleads women by persuading them that men only look at aspects of beauty but not intelligence or kindness. However, it is extremely effective as women will be attracted to the advertisement in how they can allow their beauty to be seen and would want to read more into it. Furthermore, the dull background colours such as the light blue and grey shades make the woman's flawless skin and her fair complexion appear more prominent and appealing to the eye, satisfying the audience. Moreover, the advertisement includes a larger size for the words, "Most men ask "Is she pretty?" and a smaller size is utilised for "not "Is she clever?" this differentiation convinces the audience that being prettier is more important than being clever. • 133. Movie Review : Pretty Woman Directed By Garry Marshall The movie being reviewed is a classic romantic comedy entitled Pretty Woman directed by Garry Marshall in 1990. Pretty Woman takes place in Los Angeles, California where a kindhearted prostitute Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) meets an out of town millionaire Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), and they find true love despite their differences in true fantasy fairy tale fashion and live happily ever after. This film is particularly relevant to many aspects of our American Popular Culture class because it addresses the differences in class system, morality, materialism, and even gender and feminism roles. Pretty Woman began with a man yelling out from the street "Welcome to Hollywood, What's your dream?" (Marshall, 1990). In my personal opinion, this was a major substantive point of the overall movie prearranged by the director. Directly after the analogous fairy tale Rapunzel rescue that Edward Lewis performed with Vivian Ward on the fire escape in the final scene of the movie, that same man once again was walking the street yelling "Welcome to Hollywood, What's your dream? Everybody comes here, this is Hollywood, the land of dreams! Some dreams come true, some don't but keep on dreaming! This is Hollywood!" (Marshall, 1990). The film in its entirety plays out a fantasy or alternate reality for those who decide to watch. In true Cinderella fashion Edward Lewis takes Vivian Ward from rags to riches, and gives her everything imaginable from jewelry, shopping sprees, and a taste of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When I looked first time on these pictures they looked for me very different, but then I cached a connection between them. First of all, they were painted with the same technique and they both have some energy inside, you can't catch it, if you just take a look on them, but if you look carefully, you can figure out that an author had the same feeling when he was writing them. The pencil at the top makes a feeling of something majestic, like someone is inside of this picture and he doesn't care that an author already finished his work, he just do what he wants to do, because he is invisible. I think that the pencil makes such a big feeling, because it looks very realistic. The fish is melancholy as the lady on its body too. I like that fish's eyes don't show any thinks, it gives you an opportunity to think about yourself. The inscription "Green Matisse Night Fish" helps you not to go very deep inside of the painting, it sobers you. The using of smears on the picture is similar to the first work. It makes the same feeling of carelessly. This exhibition also has several mysterious works: "Warhol Almost Got It Right" and "Baby Can Dance". Well, first I want to explain why the first work looks for me mysteriously. I called "Warhol" mysterious, because it looks pretty simple. Here is only imagined a can of tomato soup. But I know that in each painting a writer wants to explain his feelings. May be, for an author this can associates with any life–time period, or something has changed in his life when he was eating it, I don't know! So, for me the idea of this painting ... Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale Hurston In the novel Their Eyes were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston indicates the role of gender and how men are represented as superior beings compared to women. Janie represents the female protagonist in the novel and how she is affected by the gender role herself. Throughout the novel, Hurston discusses how the role of labor is represented differently for women in the eyes of men and how women are treated as if they are lower than men; and lastly how black men are treated lower than white men using black women as the source for their empowerment. Janie is categorized in the novel as a woman with very minimal rights Hurston discusses how the role of labor is represented differently for women in the eyes of men. When Janie ... 'Scuse my freezolity, Mist' Killicks, but Ah don't mean to chop de first chip.'" (27). This response to Mister Killicks shows how Janie doesn't feel as if she should do the hard work and labor that he is telling her to do. Even though he is treating her the same way men would be treated, Janie feels that she should continue doing what she does without Mister Killicks telling her what to do. Joe Starks, Janie's second husband, believes that a woman's role is to be pretty and to do nothing but that. For example it says "'You behind a plow! You ain't got no mo' business wid uh plow than uh hog is got wid uh holiday! You ain't got no business cuttin' up no seed p'taters neither. There is a use of sensory imagery when Joe says that Janie doesn't have anything to do with working more than a hog has with a holiday. This helps to create a picture in the readers mind and also helps to make a clear comparison through the use of the literary technique of metaphor. Joe has a different idea of a woman's proper role than Mister Killicks. When Joe says that Janie is "A pretty doll–baby," Hurston intends the connotation to mean that women ar elike objects for play. Pretty Woman vs. Pygmalion Essay In the history of literary texts, many original tales have often been appropriated decades later with a different message or purpose in the mind of the creator. The ideas, values and plotline are redefined in a new context to appeal to a different audience. Like all texts, both Pygmalion, written by George Bernard Shaw and Pretty Woman, directed by Gary Marshall, reflect values, beliefs and attitudes of the time, nearly 80 years apart. The use of different forms highlights the different intended audiences. On one hand, Pygmalion was a play intended for the upper echelons on society. To overcome the social barriers, both girls receive additional lessons on social manners from Barney and Pickering. As the two texts are set in different eras, the leading male characters have different reactions to the girls' attempts to refrain from submitting to the stereotypes. Edward is a lot more emotional and sensitive as the 1990's audience would not bear abusive behavior like Higgins. He reacts to the defiance of the stereotype warmly saying "very few people surprise me" after he discovers Vivienne was hiding a roll of tooth floss. On the contrary, Higgins brutally tells her to "cease this detestable boohooing instantly". This further exemplifies the different message given in the contemporary version. Both protagonists ascend through social classes with the help of two men with ability to access higher classes via profession and wealth. The film establishes Edward's social superiority by depicting him above all the guests at his party utilising a Bird's Eye View, supporting this, his ex– girlfriend admonishes him "you think I'm at your beck and call". However, he can see below him but he cannot break out of the glass window. Further supporting his inability, he becomes lost in Hollywood requiring directions from Vivienne.
