Introduction
A reoccurring issue every year in sports is assessing how valuable a player is and what his annual
salary should be. The highest annual salary in the history of the game was just given out this off–
season to a pitcher who will be pulling in 34 million dollars per year. This study will be done with
position players, but the purpose will be to judge whether huge money deals like this one are worth
it. In a 162 game schedule, many different things go into a player's contract, so this study will be

With the R–squared value being 0.2226, this shows that 22.26% of the variation in annual salaries
can be explained by the independent variables. As we are looking for higher percentages closer to
100 we can know that this is not a strong correlation. With Runs and RBI's being negative in
correlation coefficient, we can determine that the relationship with Annual Salaries and Runs/RBI is
negative. With homeruns being so close to 1.67 it could be said that this statistic is the close to being
significant at the 10%

CEO Compensation and Virtue Ethics
Another way to look at CEO compensation is to see if it agrees with virtue ethics. There is
Aristotelian virtue oriented approach to ethics and was applied to business by Robert Solomon. In
this, Solomon argues that business is primarily a practice, in which a community of individuals
engages in a cooperative endeavor to deliver goods and services for the good of society. In this
practice certain virtues such as integrity, moral courage, and justice are essential to the practice of
business. Also, in virtue ethics justice implies that executive pay should be more modest across the

CEO compensation is not "fair" top 25 CEOs had an average annual pay of $32.7 million, which is
more than 900 times the annual salary of the typical US worker. In an era which many companies
are cutting costs by laying off employees, such compensation seems to be unjust. Solomon argues
that workers may not be loyal to someone they perceive as being unfair. At some level, trust and
loyalty are needed for a company to prosper. Without these, this company will be left with a group

includes comedians, actors and musicians to name a few. All of these professions still earn
substantially less than athletes. Let's do the math. On average, a mid–level actor would earn $52,000
a year (The Hollywood Reporter, 2014). Comedians could make $30,000 or more annually (The Art
Career Project, 2014). An organist or pianist can earn up to $110,000 in a year (Berklee College of

INTRODUCTION
This project investigates how salary and performance of offensive players in Major League Baseball
are linked. We believe this is an interesting problem because it is traditionally believed that
professional athletes play with hopes of earning a high salary, yet it often seems a batter's
performance is not linked to their salary (Jensen). Therefore, it seems as if the link between a
player's performance and their salary is different than their true performance. Performing a statistical
analysis of this conundrum will give us great insight as to if it is accurate to say that performance
changes salary drastically. Studies that prior statisticians have done differ from this study because
their studies focus on salary and team performance rather than on the performance of individual
players (Jane). Our study focuses on salary and individual performance in the current season. While
there is extensive data on both game performances in the MLB and salaries, we can contribute to the
statistical community by comparing how salaries are affected by different performance indicators
for randomly selected individual players. Essentially, our hypothesis is an examination into how a
batter 's game performance affects salary. We expect that the better a player's statistics are, the
higher their salary will be.
