16. Future of Africa
Projections show that by 2050, Africa's population will double (to 2,5 billion). By 2100, one in three people
on Earth will be African. This means that, by the end of the century, sub-Saharan Africa—which already
has an extraordinarily young population—will be home to almost half of the young people in the world

28. West Africa 1875
West Africa before the Colonial Expansion. Non-colonial colors are independently ruled. European
colonization only took off after the discovery of anti-malarial drugs and the development of
technology (railroads, weapons). The colonization of many parts of Africa lasted less than 100 years.

99. Truth and Reconciliation
When a group attacks another group, how should they make up for the damage?
In South Africa, white leaders confessed and apologized and then were forgiven
In the US, broken Indian treaties have been revived but without penalties
In the US, African-Americans have been given affirmative action but no reparations
However after World War II, German and Japanese economies were aided by the US.
After World War I, Germany was made to pay large reparations which crashed their economy.
European Colonial powers never compensated their colonies
Dictators and their supporters have generally not been punished for their crimes
After World War II, senior German and Japanese leaders were tried and executed.
The US has not compensated countries greatly damaged by US forces (Vietnam, Iraq)
In general, unfortunately crime pays except when the criminals lose a war
History can help by accurately describing and condemning criminal behavior
History should also honor heroes even if they were defeated in their struggle

117. Patterns-Lessons-Questions-Trends
Patterns: European powers first traded with African tribes. After the
industrial revolution, the Europeans claimed territories in Africa as
colonies. In the 1960’s and 1970’s the colonies were freed and became
independent countries In general, independence has enriched a small
elite while leaving much of population in poverty.
Lessons: Independence does not guarantee economic progress for
most people in a country.
Questions: How can economic fairness be achieved? What happens if
the current situation remains in place in a country?
Trends: Populations are increasing which will put pressure on the economic
and social structure. However this growing youthful population could make
Africa a major force in the future, if the countries can find strong leadership
dedicated to the education and well-being of their people.
