INTRODUCTION:
Did you know that Africa is the second largest of the continents, which is about
20% of Earth's terrestrial surface, and is home to nearly 2 billion people?
Geographers divide Africa, and its 54 countries, into five different regions.
North Africa (Purple) that includes Egypt* and Morocco*
West Africa (Yellow) that includes Ghana*
East Africa (Gray) that includes Kenya* and Uganda*
Central Africa (pink) that includes Cameroon*
Southern Africa (red) that includes Botswana*
Cultural Features: Today, Africa's people are divided into two groups. A Caucasian
(white) population, that are also known as Arabs, occupy the northern 1/3 of the
continent. The southern 2/3 is mainly made up of people called Black Africans.
Africa is also the site of many great ancient civilizations, the Ancient Egyptian
and Nubian cultures that thrived along the Nile River 2,000 to 6,000 years ago,
and before WWII, it had been divided into European colonies. Both of these have
helped shape the cultural, ethnic, and economic features that define today's
African people.
