Denver Race Riot
The Chinese population of the United States used perseverance, resiliency and hard work to prove
that they could succeed in a country that has blatantly discriminated against them and labeled them
as "undesirable" and "ineligible for citizenship."
During the California Gold Rush in the mid 1800s, the United States saw an influx of immigrants
from different parts of the world. The Chinese in particular were desperately trying to escape
deplorable economic conditions in their native country. When the dream of harvesting gold turned
elusive in California, they sought employment doing hard labor in the railroad construction. As this
line of work eventually dried up as well, a few daring Chinese immigrants decided to explore
Colorado in the 1860s. Attracted by the Colorado Gold Rush, they established Denver's Chinatown.
As William Wei writes: "The neighborhood was established around 1870 on Wazee Street between
fifteenth and seventeenth Street." This area of town became known by the white population as "Hop
Alley," it also became infamous because of the establishment of opium dens, where there was
alleged gambling and prostitution. The claim that these vices were rampant in Chinatown were
grossly exaggerated and it was mostly white patrons who visited the opium dens. The origin of these
claims was due to a campaign aimed at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a precursor to the riot, the Democratic Party led a parade against the Chinese. These so called
politicians looked to strengthen their following by capitalizing on the dislike of whites against
Chinese. On October 31 1880, a riot broke out after an altercation between several white men and
two Chinese individuals. Rioters marched through Chinatown destroying property and killing a
Chinese man named Look Young. According to a report: "Look was lassoed and dragged to death,
and his body was strung up on a lamp

Race Riots In Chicago
This book was filled with passages and quotes that made a lasting impression on me not only for the
content they contained but also the way that they were written. One passage that really stuck with
me was the bottom passage on pages 202–203. This passage left an impression on me for many
reasons but mainly because it described such violent events that happened in Chicago that I never
knew about which was quite a wake up call. I did not even know that race riots ever happened in
Chicago and to find out that they were as violent and deadly as they were shocked me quite a bit.
Now a days, I never hear anyone talking about the race riots that happened in Chicago which is
surprising because by looking back at those times in our history it shows how much our society has
grown and improved. These race riots changed the course of Chicago's history which is why it is
surprising to me that I have never even heard of them before. ... Show more content on

The examples provided were committed by both white and black people which shows that it was not
just one group of people being violent towards another, both were violent towards the opposite
group of people. However, a lot of the violence was sparked by rumors of horrifying crimes that
actually did not happen. People believed the rumors because they just wanted to believe the worst of
the other group of people. This showed me that no matter how far–fetched and ridiculous stories are
people will believe what they want to believe. This idea reflects back on our society now because
when somebody makes up a rumor about another person, everyone believes it even though they
know that that person would never do anything like that. Often times people will believe rumors
over the truth which shows how society now and back then is not very trusting of other

The Journal Of The Elaine Race Riots
In the Journal of the Elaine Race Riots, I got to know the basic criticism that was for almost all the
Race Riots that had taken place. However, the sophisticated social, economic and racial analysis of
the Racial Riots was relatively new on the scholarly scene. It was, therefore, not surprising
comparatively to work that was been undertaken. The problems the poor Negroes faced during the
1919's. The Negroes had worked hard to raise the cotton crops but there was some trouble regarding
the settlements for the cotton crops. The white landlords and the sharecroppers never went along
with each other after the cotton was ready to be sold out. The landlords use to sell their crops the
way they felt was perfect according to them. Nothing was owned by the poor black planters during
the reimbursement which enumerated declarations of financial records. Nor did they own an
accounting of the wages established for cotton and seeds that they grew. They were afraid of the
whites. The technique of the secretarial that led to suspected exploitations of filling debt by corrupt
landowners and mediators. The articles stated that the poor Negroes were always kept in debt by
their landowners. They were helpless in the stride of malicious corruption. Therefore, the Negroes
have a secret meeting to discuss their scrape and gather wages for the lawyers. The reports were
based on facts that the Unions literature required communal likeness and confrontation to justice.

Race Riots : Violence Based On Race
The history of the United States has been characterized by brutality of violence based on race. Many
historians have neglected most of the episodes of this important national history as it helps people to
learn where they have come from and where they are headed to. Race riots are characterized by
violence between two or more racial groups and the end result in most cases is death. For a protest
to be called a riot, there must be a group of people with a common agenda and may occur between
police and the public or between two or more racial groups. In U.S, the race riots have been
experienced since the pre–revolution period in the 18th century. These race riots were rampant and
more pronounced in the mid–19th century, when violence broke out between two groups; the Irish
Catholic immigrants who had arrived in U.S and the Protestant Nativists. In the early 20th century,
these forms of violence were also experienced against the French–Canadian and the Irish in Rhode
Island. In the 19th century race riots just like lynching had their roots on the whites defending their
color and economic tensions between the groups involved (Reardon 17). For example, in 1887 in
Louisiana sugar plantations, there were riots from the workers whom majority was blacks went on
strike demanding pay hike. This led to the governor who was already infuriated said that God had
drawn a line between the colors meaning that blacks and whites were different and there were lines
that were never to be

A Look Into the Chicago Race Riots
The Civil War was fought over the "race problem," to determine the place of African–Americans in
America. The Union won the war and freed the slaves. However, when President Lincoln declared
the Emancipation Proclamation, a hopeful promise for freedom from oppression and slavery for
African–Americans, he refrained from announcing the decades of hardship that would follow to
obtaining the new won "freedom". Over the course of nearly a century, African–Americans would
be deprived and face adversity to their rights. They faced something perhaps worse than slavery;
plagued with the threat of being lynched or beat for walking at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Despite the addition of the 14th and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many left to the North because it was a place "...where there are no lynchings" (Sandburg 15), a
place where they could be safe. The black population in Chicago lived in an area known as the
"black belt." The Negro Migration caused the population in the Chicago "black belt" to more than
double from 50,000 to 125,000 making Chicago have the third or fourth largest black population
next to New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington (7).
A large influx of colored people created many problems. First, there was a major problem in the
availability in housing, of which was responded to with racism. This is the root for the hatred
between the black and white communities. There wasn't enough housing in the "black belt"
community, so Negroes began to spill into white neighborhoods. The very existence of a colored
person in a neighborhood would lower the property values. When a house was sold to a colored
person, the rent for the house would be higher than the previous, white owner's rent. Real Estate
companies believed that "it is a matter of common knowledge that house after house...whether under
white or black agents, comes to the Negro at an increased rental" (Sandburg 46). They sold housing
despite the fact that "the Negro in Chicago, paid a lower wage than the white workman" (47), and
that black people would have

Race Riots Advancement for African Americans in America Essay
Race riots in America is a story told so little, but a story that is key to the hard work and road laid
for African Americans. In the 20th century in times where we knew African Americans fought
persistently for Civil Rights, seldom is their the story about the early 20th century. In the beginnings
of the 20th century Riots broke out across all of the United States, over eight issues which included
the following: Prejudice, Economic Competition, Political Corruption and Exploitation of Negro
Voters, Police Inefficiency, Newspaper Lies about Negro Crime, Unpunished Crimes Against
Negroes, Housing, Reaction of Whites and Negroes from War. Over the course of a span of fifty
years more than eight riots broke out, including Wilmington race ... Show more content on

Meaning there was an over throw of the government, kicking out all African Americans out of their
political offices.
History tells us in brief that the race riot began from Alexander Manly's response about interracial
relations claims made by Rebecca L Felton. ""When there is not enough religion in the pulpit to
organize a crusade against sin; nor justice in the court house to promptly punish crime; nor manhood
enough in the nation to put a sheltering arm about innocence and virtue––––if it needs lynching to
protect woman's dearest possession form the ravening human beasts––––then I say lynch, a
thousand times a week if necessary." Meaning White men are making it easy for African Americans
to rape white women while they work out in their fields. Manly, a paper editor and owner of the
Wilmington Daily Record responded to these claims, which are to be expected since he is mulatto.
Manly responded stating that African American men are not rapist and push for these relations.
Realistically we know this is not the only cause.
Wilmington was a city on the rise, having the ability to be the biggest, richest urban city in America;
Today's Atlanta. The population consisted of strong middle class, and professionals; contrary to
many people thoughts, All African Americans were not enslaved, poor or illiterate. Many former
slaves moved to Wilmington following the war; to make certain that they could remain, there was a
Freedmen's Bureau office set up.

The Springfield 1908 Race Riots
Springfield 's history is a long and eventful one. Although there was one event that has seemed to
haunt the citizens of Springfield for generations upon generations. This event is commonly referred
to as the Springfield 1908 race riots. The race riots are remembered as a dark and painful part of
springfield's history. On June first, a single black man named Joe James jumped off a freight train
entering springfield, and began a streak of partying. He had been arrested soon after, and was
sentenced for 50 days in the jail, but was allowed to run errands while on parole. WHile on parole
on June 3rd, he left and didn't come back. While drunk, he had entered Clergy Ballard's house the
night before, and had slashed the neck of Clergy after attempting to sexually assault his daughter.
The next day, after waking up on a park bench, multiple of Clergy's relatives and neighbors ganged
up on James and beat him senseless until police arrived to arrest James. They hauled him off to the
town jail until shipped off to a court case. On August 14, over a month later, a newspaper reported
that Mabel Hallam had been raped by George Richardson. She claimed that in the middle of the
night while in her backyard, a black man came to her and allegedly raped her. There was no
evidence, but George was convicted anyway. Sadly, this isn't the first instance of racism in
springfield. Racial tensions had long been an issue in the midwest, and even in the rest of the
country. Springfield was an

Chicago Race Riots 1919
The Aftermath By the end, thirty–eight were dead (twenty–three blacks, fifteen whites), five
hundred and thirty–seven injured, and one thousand black families made homeless. Thousands and
thousands suffered from just one case. Many horrible things were done in the five months of rioting.
If the police arrested the white man from the beginning, those thirty–eight people would be living
today. Our society saw nothing wrong in fighting for equal rights with violence. The entire U.S.
society is part of the blame for all the crucial events that occurred. After the riots of 1919 many of us
learned from our mistakes, but it can not be taken back. There was no need to have a separate group

Although it is nothing like the riots in Chicago years ago, racism is still common. Racism can be
discreet, but hurtful. In the past few years, there have been many violent situations that have been
considered racism. The shooting of Michael Brown, which caused riots very similar to the ones in
Chicago. These riots that occurred in Missouri were scarily similar to the riots in the early 1900s.
The destruction not only caused physical pain, but emotional pain as well. These actions made
African Americans look like they did many years ago, and that is not the reality of the situation. This
particular shooting was not the first, and probably not the last, that was driven by racism, or is said
to be. Racism and segregation happen everyday. Is it ignored or simply overlooked because the
foundation of our country is built upon this. As much as America has grown in racism, such as
having an African American man as our president for many years now, there is still a lot of growing
to be done. We, the people of the United States, need to look back on these mistakes, and the
mistakes of others, and work to our best ability to change them and prevent them from ever
happening again. America has come such a grand distance, and still has a long journey

Summary Of The Columbia Race Riot
The Columbia Race Riot was best known for being the first major confrontation following World
War II. It's a story of anger, fear, violence, and the law in a Tennessee town. The riot began with a 19
year old black navy veteran, James Stephenson and a white repairman. Their fight was over a
botched radio repair. James Stephenson escaped being lynched in Columbia, Tennessee. The story
had articles that were publish by Africans American and all white publishers. The newspaper articles
from the publishers had many differences, but also had many similarities. The Nashville Globe by
African Americans publishers and the Columbia Daily Herald by White Publishers caught my eye
first. What similarities did both articles have? What differences did both articles have? After
extensive research The Columbia Riot played a big role in the fight to freedom for African
Americans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Daily only discussed the arrest of James Stephenson and his mother, Gladys, for attacking William
Fleming, discharged Army Veteran, because of a radio that was not repaired. The Nashville Globe
stated that part of the story, but also mentioned the riot. In the Columbia Daily there was one
difference between each article. Columbia Daily stated that there were witness at the attack on
Fleming. In the Columbia Daily they alleged that Negros slashed Fleming with glass, but in The
Nashville Globe didn't mention anything about witnesses. As detailed in the Nashville Globe no
witness were present, also James and his mother fought back while Fleming got knocked through a
glass window and got injured from the broken glass. Neither the son nor mother slashed Fleming

Race Riot Essay
This book review was on the book of Race Riot: Chicago in the Red Summer of 1919. It was a
long–term study done by William M. Tuttle, Jr. Its objective was to make a comprehensive
documentation of the events of 1919 in Chicago. The book dealt with all aspects and perspectives of
the event. The author's objective was to leave no stone uncovered. That every aspect would be
talked about in detail. Some important aspects that he arose throughout the book are going to be the
focal point of this book review.
I think that it would be proper to give a little history about the author. William Tuttle was a graduate
from Denison University in 1959. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin in
1967. He is a college professor and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many instances Tuttle states that the police not only condoned the beatings and killings but also
participated in many of them. He often made the point of police involvement. Like when the two
black officers came to arrest the suspected stoners the other white officers did not allow them to
arrest them and let them go free. These actions put fear into blacks. Tuttle states, "They had
expected little else of a police force which they had come to view as the armed representative of
white hostility"(Tuttle, 33). These actions may explain the resentment and hatred of police today by
many blacks.
There was also a big influx of blacks to Chicago. The numbers of blacks migrating to Chicago was
tremendous. Many reasons Tuttle states are the cause for this. The major one is just blacks wanting
to leave the south. They wanted to leave the segregated south in hope of a better future. They were
tired of the Jim Crow laws, lynching, poor school, and constant harassment. A black said,
"Anywhere north will do us"(Tuttle, 79). Another reason was jobs. In the time of war, the big
manufactories trying to keep up with the needs of the military were in dire needs of people to work.
There were actual labor recruiters whose job was to go out and recruit blacks to work in the
factories. Moreover, when the opportunity to work opened up blacks took them in full demand. It
was a way out of the south.

The Controversy: The Elaine Race Riot Of 1919
Imagine forbidden to eat in the same restaurant, study in the same school, pray in the same church,
or seek medical treatment in the same hospital as a white. This was Black America in the South
during the Jim Crow era. Living under a code of laws created to separate the races and maintain a
segregated society. The end of World War I brought a lot of change. Black troops were returning
home from Western Europe determined to claim the same democracy for which they had fought.
The continuous migration of blacks to the north led to labor conflicts. For the first time, whites had
to compete with blacks for jobs. Whites turned their anger and frustration on black neighborhoods
spurring racial conflict and spreading terror and fear nationwide. The Red Summer of 1919 featured
riots occurring in numerous cities including Washington, DC; Chicago, Illinois; Knoxville,
Tennessee; and Indianapolis, Indiana. The Elaine Race Riot of 1919, also known as The Elaine
Massacre, was the deadliest racial conflict in Arkansas history and possibly even the United States.

African Americans have overcome multiple struggles within American society. Race brutality has
been a major battle for African Americans to fight against. There have been many race riots
throughout history that have influenced future actions towards African Americans. The anti–African
American was a process of assimilation for immigrants who felt that being against African
Americans was a way to adopt the values of the dominant American culture and to be seen as
American and not as an immigrant. One way to adopt the values of the dominant culture was to
believe in racial segregation. The idea of immigrant groups to be anti–African American, to

the officer were in a heated debate which led to Officer Minikus pulling out his baton. The officer
responded with the usual procedure by sending out a code 1199 – "Officer Needs Help" – over the
radio. The other officer on the scene, Officer Bennett, pushed back the crowed with his shotgun and
the crowd moved back as Minikus and Frye struggled for control of the baton. In a few short

Tulsa Race Riots
On May 31–June 1, 1921, a series of actions occurred in Greenwood, a small district in the northern
parts of Tulsa, Oklahoma, which are now called the Tulsa race Riots.
Being a segregated city like the rest of Oklahoma, many of Tulsa's African American citizens
resided in Greenwood– an area composed of predominately African American communities and
business locations. The discovery of oil is the number one reason why Tulsa's economy flourished.
There was an abundance of wealthy African Americans due to of this discovery. Because of the
affluence and success within the African American community going on in this one particular area,
it became known as the Black Wall Street.
The whole chain of events began on May 30, 1921 when Dick Rowland, a young black man,
allegedly assaulted a white elevator operator. Rowland was arrested the next day. However, outside
the courthouse a group of raging whites gathered to attempt to lynch Rowland while a group of
African Americans were protecting him to prevent the hanging. With the signal of one unintentional
gunshot, many others rang out leaving some from both groups dead. With word getting around town
of the riot, many angered whites stormed into the Greenwood District. Residencies were set on fire
and many businesses were looted and burned to the ground. Planes also flew by dropping bombs in
the area. With law enforcement on the whites' side, the officers were also a part of the riot. The

The Effects Of The Detroit Race Riot Of 1967
The Detroit race riot of 1967 was one the most destructive and violent riots of the 159 race riots that
occurred during the "Long Hot Summer." For five straight days civilians fought the police, resulting
in 43 deaths, 1,189 injuries, 7,200 arrests, and over 2,500 lootings. Fifty years later there are still
visible results of the riot, and the event remains a source of reflection for Detroit citizens. Asides
from the building damage and violence, the riots affected various aspects of Detroit's culture,
including the Motown enterprise, which was producing chart–topping music that influenced
listeners across the globe. As a genre of music that was known as "The Sound of Young America" in
the 1960s, studying the Motown sound before and after the riots can provide insight into Detroit
citizens' mindset.
Between 1964 and 1967 Motown recorded sixty top fifteen pop chart hits, fourteen of which were
number ones. But Motown's success was almost unfathomable to the music industry as a record
label ran by an African American with African American musicians and producers. Berry Gordy, the
founder of Motown, managed to create black music and commercialize it directly to a white
American audience that was often times only willing to consume music that was at least covered by
a white musician. This all occurred in the wake of the "British Invasion", from 1964 to 1966, where
young white Americans became drawn to male–dominated guitar–based groups. With Billboard's

of most notable were in Washington D.C, Chicago, and Baltimore. The age of peaceful protests was

World War II the things people were fighting for were equality in the work place as well as in the
streets. There was still a divide between lower class black and white people who have the same
income because of skin color. People were concerned with maintain the "value of white" and we are

deadliest and bloodiest riots Chicago has ever seen. I also believe that the labor conflict was another
major reason as to why these riots took place. While there were several other factors that contribute

Effects Of Race Riots On Urban African Americans
Urban Blacks were also encounter with extreme racial violence in neighborhoods and at work.
Different ethnic groups of new immigrants obtained power and used conflict as a strategy of
diminishing urban Blacks power level. They began blocking Urban Black workers going to work
throughout new immigrant's neighborhoods. Race riots have played a crucial role in the social
establishment of race, prejudice, and discrimination across the United States. Race riots uncovered
fundamental tensions in societies experiencing swift technological and economic changes. In 1920,
there were many race riots and other violence in many places, such as Red Summer Race Riots of

A Media Controlled Race Riot
A Media Controlled Race Riot
The very first thing millions of people do when they wake up is check their phones, and log into
whatever social media sites that they are a part of, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr,
and many more. On these sites, there are several ads or newspaper articles depicting different
political messages or views. These advertisements and news articles can easily influence our
thoughts on different aspects of life, such as religious view or racial identity. During the era of the
race riot, the people of this time had their own version of media: the newspaper. More often than
not, the first thing people did in the morning was read the newspaper. The image that comes to mind
is businessmen sitting on trains or families gathered together in the morning reading the newspaper.
In 1908, Springfield, Illinois experienced a race riot that was mainly controlled by the opinion they
were receiving from the material from the media that they read and viewed.
Material that was available to the people of Springfield were newspapers and occasionally plays. A
play that was taking place almost a year before a riot was seriously on the minds of Springfield
citizens was The Birth of a Nation. A major occurrence that happened almost every time this play
was to take place in a northern community was interracial violence in and around the theaters that
offered it (Roche pg. 25). It may have been a mistake, but Springfield's black newspaper the Forum

Greenwood and its African American population became the outlet for these often violent tensions
seething among Tulsa's white population. The following paper seeks to shed some further

extreme reaction during the riot.
To answer the question, 'Why were the whites so mean?' it is necessary to understand the pre–
existing conditions that existed in Tulsa, Oklahoma before the actual riot took place in 1921.
Pre–existing racism in Tulsa was the foundation on which all the other causes of the riot were built
upon. Wide–spread segregation was still common in America at that time and it was accepted by
many in the North and South that whites were inherently superior to blacks. These views were
particularly strong in the South, where emancipated blacks were seen as a threat and scourge to
white Southern culture, a culture which was utterly dominated by whites and where blacks were
oppressed with no hope of equal protection under the law, equal representation, etc. This was also
the case in Tulsa in the early 1900s. Blacks were segregated against by the white residents and as a
consequence formed their own community, called Greenwood, on the north side of the Frisco
Railroad tracks, which was heralded by

The Elaine Race Riots '
The Elaine Race Riots The Elaine Race Riot can be even said as the Elaine massacre that had taken
place on September 30, 1919, in Elaine in Phillips County, Arkansas, in the Arkansas Delta. The
fight started when around 100 African Americans, commonly black farmers on the farms of white
landlords joined a consultation of the Progressive Farmers and the Household Union of America at a
church in Hoop Spur, the Phillips County that was three miles north of Elaine. The assembly was
managed by Robert Hill; he was the organizer of the Progressive Farmers and the Household Union
of America. The main goal of the meeting was that one of the numerous black sharecroppers in the
Elaine area during the former months was achieving better payments for their cotton crops from the
white farm owners who conquered the area during the Jim Crow's era. The poor Black sharecroppers
were frequently browbeaten in their hard work to collect payment for their cotton crops. The whites
didn't like that the blacks were receiving a higher amount of wages than them, so the whites attacked
such consolidation that was done by blacks, and the two groups swapped firing into the night. The
two white men procured it upon themselves to show up, one was a deputy sheriff, and the other was
a railroad employee who attended it. It was all after that, that the combat had taken place. The
escorts who were standing shot one of the white men. It resulted in the death of one of the white
officers. A black executor

The Tulsa Race Riot : The Black Population Of Tulsa At The...
The Tulsa Race Riot is an event that is quite possibly the most unknown and misconstrued piece of
history in the United States of America. When and if it is discussed, it's taken as a single event that
happened in Tulsa and was deadly and very destructive. The many theories of what occurred and
how it came to the extreme mob like violence taken on Tulsa's own civilians. The evidence found
suggest there were alternative motives in Tulsa for acquiring land that the black civilians held. This
paper is going to present the view from the black population of Tulsa at the time of the riots. Events
took place prior to the riot and created more tension to the race debate. These will need to be
explained to set the tensions that led to the burning homes and brutal violence taken on the black
citizens.
The Tulsa Race Riot is considered to be the most deadly and violent race riot of all time. The period
of the riot was a time of prosperity in America, not only among whites, but the black population in
Tulsa were also living an upper middle class life. The oil boom gave Tulsa a quick boost in the
economy and people had money, lots of money. With oil in the ground and money everywhere, it's
hard to imagine that the National Guard was about to be called on its own civilians for the first time
and only time in history.
Although blacks occupied most fields of employment, they were generally barred from many of the
higher status positions. Those blacks who broke the social realm like

Another brutal race riot was the Tulsa Race riot of 1921. On May 30, 1921, Dick Rowland, a 19–
year old african–american shoe shiner, entered an elevator with Sarah Page, a 17–year–old white
elevator operator. Rowland accidentally stepped on her foot or grabbed her to catch himself from
falling. After screaming, police were called to arrest Rowland. He managed to flee but was arrested
the next day. Newspaper articles and widespread rumors caused people to form a lynch mob. The
court case was held the next day on May 31, 1921. While Rowland was being tried, many white
supremacists surrounded the courthouse waiting to lynch him. At around 10pm, shots were fired,
which started the beginning of the riot. African–Americans, some veterans of WWI,

Wilmington Race Riots: The American Civil Rights Movement
Almost no event had such a singularly negative effect on the American Civil Rights movement as
the Wilmington Race Riots of 1898, a white–supremacist coup d'état that occurred here in North
Carolina shortly after the end of Reconstruction. On November 10, 1898, racial tension that had
been clouding in the South ever since the end of the Civil War and the election of Republicans
during Reconstruction broke in a destructive thunderclap of mob violence. The Wilmington race
riots set back civil rights progress not only in Wilmington, but all across the nation. Only as recently
as 2006 has the state legislature formally apologized for the event, which was responsible for
turning Wilmington into a white–majority city and marking the end of several decades of progress in
the state.
First and foremost, the uprising had an immediate and catastrophic effect on the city's cultural
diversity, driving African–Americans out of the city and cementing political power in the hands of
white supremacists. In the 1900 gubernatorial election, for example, which was exactly one year
after the riots, over 99.9 percent of the votes cast were for the Democratic candidate, notable white
supremacist Charles Aycock; in the preceding 1896 gubernatorial election, the Democrats only
garnered 40.8 percent of the votes. The riots also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

country would not turn from until the 1960s, as decisions like Brown vs. Board of Education

Tulsa Race Riot
Have you ever said that you wanted to start a riot, and people have responded by saying that's not
funny? Well here's why they say that. On May 31, 1921 a riot occurred in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It all
happened when Dick Rowland (an African American) was accused of raping a white woman named
Sarah Page in an elevator, when Rowland had tripped and grabbed her arm by accident. A salesclerk
overheard the scream and called the police. Rowland was arrested. There were angry whites that
were outside the courtroom protesting for Rowland to be lynched. The violence started for some
people on May 31, 1921 and went on until June 1, 1921. 1265 homes, dozens of office buildings,

There could be some resentment that might cause these reparations to fail, but the commission has
hope that this would work. For the charges to be dropped from the Rowland cases has already
happened so that is one start to restoring the injustice in this town of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The restoration of the homes, churches, schools, etc., there needs to be commitment from both
contributors that they will build them safely, and durable and not do a whack job on them. They
need to be constructed so they feel like this dumb riot never happened.
For the acceptance to work, both races need to be willing to see everyone as equal and not
somebody they can kill because they don't like the color of their skin or how they talk or something
dumb like that.
The commission hopes that these recommendations will be put into action and that it will bring
peace in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hopefully this will bring races together and bring justice to the

As you weren't privy to this conversation, I should tell you that the possessive pronoun 'their' in the

forewarn me about the many evils that waited for me as an adult. To him, the number one threat to
black men in the United States aside from living in the United States was and forever shall be white
women.
At first I felt that emigrating to Tennessee a few years after the assassination of Martin Luther King
forever biased his view of America. That was until I read about the lynching epidemics that spurned
the mass migration of blacks out of the South to the North. If you were to read Robert A. Gibson.

Who Is Andy Warhol's Race Riot?
In the featured pop art piece "Race Riot," the artist, Andy Warhol, depicts racial tension that often
occurred in the mid 20th century. During the 1960s, racism was on a high among the American
people, with a particular focus on the African American race that was trying to pass the American
Civil Rights Movement. The art piece addresses not only Warhol's political views, but also the
inequality people faced in a land that was meant to be "free".
Regarding the piece and the traditional roles of artists, in my opinion, the role that is most important
is "artists help us to see the world in new or innovative ways". Warhol wanted people who viewed
his piece to understand the injustice and inequality African Americans faced in a new light. Rather
than just identify the historical tension of race, he presented a violent and powerful piece as a need
to tell the story of both sides. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Warhol wanted to capture the moments of protesters being attacked by police force to draw the issue

I believe Warhol seen the events taken place in the photo as unnecessary force among people.
Despite America claiming being a nation of freedom, he wanted to show how full of hypocrisy
people are to believe that everyone is treated equal. He also wanted to express his empathy for the

The working conditions were very difficult, tiring, and dangerous but the workers were fine with
that considering they were getting paid three times more than they were in the south. Female
migrants also searched for work but found it much more of a challenge due to competition for
domestic labor positions. There was a large amount of competition for jobs but considering the
increasing population percentage in crowded cities, living space was also a competition many
African Americans were faced with. The North offered more food and better housing, but also some
unhealthy and overcrowded accommodations that helped spread tuberculosis . Segregation was not
legal in the North like it was in the South but racism and prejudice were wide spread through the
United States. Racially based housing ordinances were declared unconstitutional by the U.S.
Supreme Court in 1917. It led some neighborhoods to pass an agreement that requires white
property owners to agree not to sell to blacks, until 1948 when the court turned down the agreement.
A large amount of race riots began after 1915 when the rent rose in segregated areas and a

The Tulsa race riot of 1921 was a dark time in the history of Oklahoma. It all began with a simple
misunderstanding, but had catastrophic consequences. Homes and businesses were destroyed, many
African Americans and whites were killed, and Tulsa had lost its soul. In the beginning Oklahoma

Louis and many communities in between white mobs pursued what can only be described as a reign
of terror against African Americans during the period from 1917 to 1923." As Mr. Patrick stated this
was probably one of the worst if not the worst domestic act violence. Even today people do not have
the knowledge or refuse to believe what happened that day in 1921. The official death toll was
35(Patrick, 1999) but it is believed that many more hundreds were killed, because many bodies were
dumped into the river of coal mines or burned (Patrick, 1999). Here are other numbers that Mr.
Patrick writes in his article, 1500 African American homes destroyed, 600 businesses destroyed, 21
churches, 21 restaurants, 30 stores, 2 movie theaters, a hospital, a bank, a post office, libraries, and

Tulsa Race Riot
The Tulsa race riot changed the course of American history by actively expressing African American
views on white supremacy. Before the events of the Tulsa race riot African Americans saw the white
community taking justice into their own hands. Black citizens of Tulsa stood up against this sort of
white mob. This escaladed into the Tulsa race riot. The Tulsa race riot and its effects weighed
heavily upon the African Americans of this era.
The first event was with the Industrial Workers of World (IWW), where they were blamed by
Tulsan's in bombing the house of a wealthy oilman. It began on "October 29, 1917", when the home
of a wealthy oilman was bombed in Tulsa. There were little clues to be found but as Scott ... Show

He was then arrested for shooting Homer Nida. When Belton was in the courthouse, thousand of
white citizens of Tulsa waited outside for Belton so that justice could be server for the kill of Homer
Nida. When Belton came out of the courthouse onlookers cheered as his captors shouted, "We got
him boys. We've got him." Belton was then taken to the Jenks road were he then was lynched by the
white mob.
White supremacy in Tulsa during 1917 to 1921 was soaring, white citizen of Tulsa thought with
events of bombing a wealthy oilman home to the killing of a taxi cab driver that they should have
take the law into their own hands. African Americans were terrified in the white citizens actions.
African Americans felt that they would not get equal justice with the law, so African Americans had
to stand together against white supremacy and challenge their authority. Which leads into the events
that start of the Tulsa race riot. Dick Rowland work as a shoe shiner on Main Street. There were no
toilet facilities for the boot shiners, so the owner of the shine parlor where Rowland worked
arranged for the employees to use the restroom across the street on the top floor. So the morning of

Causes Of The Oklahoma Race Riot
Greenwood was an African American community that thrived in Tulsa, Oklahoma and was well
flourished with limitless opportunities. It was separated from white Tulsa by railroad tracks but was
under white Tulsa's political and police authorities. The Tulsa Race Riot happened in 1921. The
residents and businesses of the African American community of Greenwood were attacked by a
white mob killing many and bringing the whole community to ashes. There were many deeply
rooted social causes that contributed to the horrendous action, as the elements fueling the riot were
there long before.
The trigger for the Tulsa riot was the arrest of a black man for allegedly assaulting a white female in
an elevator and an inflammatory article that was published in a white newspaper. Greenwood
residents feared a lynching and so gathered in front of the courthouse where he was held, to protect
him from a lynch mob. While a deputy was trying to disarm an armed black man, a shot was fired,
and this triggered the riot. The National Guard units, the law enforcement officers and the men
deputized by Tulsa officials worked together to control what they termed as a Negro uprising. The
whites invaded the black Tulsa community, looting and burning their properties and preventing any
rescue operations because they saw that such behavior had been legitimized. The black Tulsa was
turned into a mass of black clouds of smoke.

Chicago Race Riots Of 1919
Chicago Race of Riots of 1919 The Chicago Race Riots of 1919 helped to further show how African
Americans are looked as inferior, not just within the citizens of the United States, but the Congress
and criminal justice system. White and black beaches were separated by an invisible line; the black
beach on 25th street and whites on 29th street. The story of Eugene Williams swimming on the
beach worsened after a white police officer, Dan Callahan, refused to intervene or arrest the group of
white men responsible for his death, in turn starting the deadliest racial violence in Chicago history.
The riot lasted a week with protestors full of rage mostly on the South side with white gangs
attacking isolated blacks and blacks attacking isolated whites. In "City of Courts" by Michael
Willrich he talks about how the social causes of crime, specifically about the criminal justice system
of Chicago. Michael Willrich goes into great detail about whether crime should be an individual
failing or a social failing. He claimed that because of the "social" conditions, such as heredity and
the environment, it drove individuals to commit crime. This relates to racially motivated crimes or
riots, which was motivated by heightened tensions because of promise of employment and dignity
for blacks, since the black population doubled from 1916 to 1918. Blacks have always talked about

in Watts, Los Angeles. The riot was a culmination of racial tension and anger that came with the
lower class black experience. The riot paved the way for more separatism in American society;
notions of racial unity had been drowned out. Another similar explosion of black outrage happened

The Wilmington Race Riot
Currently, there has been a major event occurring in the town of Wilmington, North Carolina
between citizens of many races, and many political parties, including the Republican Party,
Democratic Party, and the Populist Party. These parties had different political and racial views on
government policies, and who should rule. Wilmington is a strong religious community, and is the
center of African American political and economic success.
After the end of the Civil War, laws allowed blacks to get an education and were able to manage
their own businesses. Since the government created laws that allowed blacks to vote, there has been
some controversy between whites and blacks. A major event occurred called the Fusion Coalition.
When it was time to vote, people "fused" their voters and hoped to defeat the Democratic Party by
doing this. Propaganda and media is put up all over town to intimidate people and make people
believe certain things, based on what type of propaganda it is. People have started to fall for these
propaganda posters, and it causes people to believe whatever they see. This sparked the current Race
Riot because it actually led people to believe that blacks are bad and that they should not have a say.

Causes Of The Chicago Race Riot
When most people here the topic of the Chicago Race Riot they usually do not know a lot of
information about it. The Chicago Race Riot was an important part of history for the state of Illinois
and America as a country. This paper will discuss the causes of the Chicago Race Riot, violence
between Americans, and how is important to Illinois's history. The main causes of the Chicago Race
Riot are very significant to how it all started. According to Tuttle's book, Race Riot: Chicago in the
Red Summer of 1919 there are three main causes that all relate to the starting of the violent
outbreak. The first cause all started at 29th street beach. There at the beach, the blacks tried to join
the whites, but just the opposite happened (pp.5). The whites did everything in their power to expel
the blacks from their beach (pp.5). They did just that until the blacks came back with reinforcement
in their numbers causing the whites to leave their beach temporarily (pp.5). This cause basically
shows that ever since the blacks fought for their way out of slavery that they were not looked at as
equals. The whites still looked at themselves as superiors. They did not show it unless one of the
blacks stepped out of line. For example, the incident at the 29th street beach when the blacks tried to
swim at the white's beach. Just by how Tuttle explained that the law was unwritten showed that
whites mostly kept it not very public about their feelings until the race riot erupted. The incident at

The Impact Of The Tulsa Race Riot On The Greenwood District
How did the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 impact the Greenwood District
The Tulsa Race Riot impacted so many people and all it gets is a paragraph or one page in an
Oklahoma history textbook. This event put Tulsa on the map and it barely gets any recognition. How
are people supposed to change the world if information is constantly hidden? The riot didn't
completely leave a negative impact. Don't be fooled, it was terrible and extremely destructive, but
some good came out of it. For example, in my case I swell with pride when I hear about how
successful and booming the black community was in Tulsa. It makes me appreciate my hometown
and what it has to offer. The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 impacted the Greenwood District by creating
more roots in Tulsa, destroying the lives and homes of families, and hiding the significance of
Greenwood and how prosperous it was.
Where does someone get their views, traditions, and fears from if they don't identify with a culture?
There is literally a culture for everything. There's a millennial culture, gaming culture, food culture,
etc.–you name it! Culture itself is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual
achievement regarded collectively. Whether one knows it or not, they identify with something. In
the book "Tulsa's Historic Greenwood District" by Hannibal B. Johnson it states "A people without
the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots–Marcus Garvey."

Government, Mr. Wilson, Period 1
Abstract
This paper explains a very important moment in the history of our government that took place in
Illinois in 1917. As World War I was beginning for the United States things were heating up in East
St. Louis, Illinois. Anti–black riots killed or injured over one hundred black civilians. Then a Silent
Parade of over ten thousand black citizens from New York broke out. Civil rights have always been
an issue in our government, and according to www.kidzworld.com, after these anti black riots,
things eventually led to the development of the The National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People, and from that, Rosa Parks did not give up her seat on the bus. The creation of the
NAACP also influenced the Little Rock, Arkansas incident, Martin L. King's "I Have a Dream"
Speech, and many other things which eventually led to equal rights for everyone with the Civil
Rights Act of 1964. This paper will explain the riots and how it shaped our government into
providing equal jobs for all races.
The East St. Louis Race Riots As stated in a YouTube video from Nine Network, St. Louis back in
1917 was a place of many jobs and it was often said that if you couldn't find work anywhere in St.

The Causes And Effects Of The Detroit Race Riot Of 1967
Law and Disorder White Americans have discriminated against African Americans ever since the
first white men–bringing with them their slaves–set foot in what would become the continental
United States. America's roots lie in imperialistic expansionism during which white men took
advantage of those with a darker skin color whom they deemed unequal. The photograph of the
devastating aftermath of the Detroit Race Riot of 1967 vividly captures the white Americans sense
of dominance towards the disenfranchised African Americans. Though the photo lacks an easily
identifiable original source, it has circulated around the internet and now serves as an epitome of the
voiceless black American community's stance in the wake of destruction against the rest of America;
it signifies what is still known as "The Great Rebellion" in Detroit, as the black Americans
expressed their rage against the failure of American institutions (Flock). The picture's illustration of
the rubble among the street, pillaged stores, and thick black clouds of smoke billowing into the sky
conveys the ruins that not only Detroit suffered, but also African Americans across America. The
graphic image depicts the inequality and oppression black Americans endured in the face of the
unscrupulous, corrupt white American empire. Ultimately, the photo represents United States as an
imperial country founded on racial hierarchy.

Denver Race Riot

  • 1. Denver Race Riot The Chinese population of the United States used perseverance, resiliency and hard work to prove that they could succeed in a country that has blatantly discriminated against them and labeled them as "undesirable" and "ineligible for citizenship." During the California Gold Rush in the mid 1800s, the United States saw an influx of immigrants from different parts of the world. The Chinese in particular were desperately trying to escape deplorable economic conditions in their native country. When the dream of harvesting gold turned elusive in California, they sought employment doing hard labor in the railroad construction. As this line of work eventually dried up as well, a few daring Chinese immigrants decided to explore Colorado in the 1860s. Attracted by the Colorado Gold Rush, they established Denver's Chinatown. As William Wei writes: "The neighborhood was established around 1870 on Wazee Street between fifteenth and seventeenth Street." This area of town became known by the white population as "Hop Alley," it also became infamous because of the establishment of opium dens, where there was alleged gambling and prostitution. The claim that these vices were rampant in Chinatown were grossly exaggerated and it was mostly white patrons who visited the opium dens. The origin of these claims was due to a campaign aimed at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a precursor to the riot, the Democratic Party led a parade against the Chinese. These so called politicians looked to strengthen their following by capitalizing on the dislike of whites against Chinese. On October 31 1880, a riot broke out after an altercation between several white men and two Chinese individuals. Rioters marched through Chinatown destroying property and killing a Chinese man named Look Young. • 5. Race Riots In Chicago This book was filled with passages and quotes that made a lasting impression on me not only for the content they contained but also the way that they were written. One passage that really stuck with me was the bottom passage on pages 202–203. This passage left an impression on me for many reasons but mainly because it described such violent events that happened in Chicago that I never knew about which was quite a wake up call. I did not even know that race riots ever happened in Chicago and to find out that they were as violent and deadly as they were shocked me quite a bit. Now a days, I never hear anyone talking about the race riots that happened in Chicago which is surprising because by looking back at those times in our history it shows how much our society has grown and improved. These race riots changed the course of Chicago's history which is why it is surprising to me that I have never even heard of them before. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The examples provided were committed by both white and black people which shows that it was not just one group of people being violent towards another, both were violent towards the opposite group of people. However, a lot of the violence was sparked by rumors of horrifying crimes that actually did not happen. People believed the rumors because they just wanted to believe the worst of the other group of people. This showed me that no matter how far–fetched and ridiculous stories are people will believe what they want to believe. This idea reflects back on our society now because when somebody makes up a rumor about another person, everyone believes it even though they know that that person would never do anything like that. Often times people will believe rumors over the truth which shows how society now and back then is not very trusting of other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Journal Of The Elaine Race Riots In the Journal of the Elaine Race Riots, I got to know the basic criticism that was for almost all the Race Riots that had taken place. However, the sophisticated social, economic and racial analysis of the Racial Riots was relatively new on the scholarly scene. It was, therefore, not surprising comparatively to work that was been undertaken. The problems the poor Negroes faced during the 1919's. The Negroes had worked hard to raise the cotton crops but there was some trouble regarding the settlements for the cotton crops. The white landlords and the sharecroppers never went along with each other after the cotton was ready to be sold out. The landlords use to sell their crops the way they felt was perfect according to them. Nothing was owned by the poor black planters during the reimbursement which enumerated declarations of financial records. Nor did they own an accounting of the wages established for cotton and seeds that they grew. They were afraid of the whites. The technique of the secretarial that led to suspected exploitations of filling debt by corrupt landowners and mediators. The articles stated that the poor Negroes were always kept in debt by their landowners. They were helpless in the stride of malicious corruption. Therefore, the Negroes have a secret meeting to discuss their scrape and gather wages for the lawyers. The reports were based on facts that the Unions literature required communal likeness and confrontation to justice. The articles stated that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Race Riots : Violence Based On Race The history of the United States has been characterized by brutality of violence based on race. Many historians have neglected most of the episodes of this important national history as it helps people to learn where they have come from and where they are headed to. Race riots are characterized by violence between two or more racial groups and the end result in most cases is death. For a protest to be called a riot, there must be a group of people with a common agenda and may occur between police and the public or between two or more racial groups. In U.S, the race riots have been experienced since the pre–revolution period in the 18th century. These race riots were rampant and more pronounced in the mid–19th century, when violence broke out between two groups; the Irish Catholic immigrants who had arrived in U.S and the Protestant Nativists. In the early 20th century, these forms of violence were also experienced against the French–Canadian and the Irish in Rhode Island. In the 19th century race riots just like lynching had their roots on the whites defending their color and economic tensions between the groups involved (Reardon 17). For example, in 1887 in Louisiana sugar plantations, there were riots from the workers whom majority was blacks went on strike demanding pay hike. This led to the governor who was already infuriated said that God had drawn a line between the colors meaning that blacks and whites were different and there were lines that were never to be ... • 17. Chicago Race Riots Essay A Look Into the Chicago Race Riots The Civil War was fought over the "race problem," to determine the place of African–Americans in America. The Union won the war and freed the slaves. However, when President Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation, a hopeful promise for freedom from oppression and slavery for African–Americans, he refrained from announcing the decades of hardship that would follow to obtaining the new won "freedom". Over the course of nearly a century, African–Americans would be deprived and face adversity to their rights. They faced something perhaps worse than slavery; plagued with the threat of being lynched or beat for walking at the wrong place at the wrong time. Despite the addition of the 14th and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many left to the North because it was a place "...where there are no lynchings" (Sandburg 15), a place where they could be safe. The black population in Chicago lived in an area known as the "black belt." The Negro Migration caused the population in the Chicago "black belt" to more than double from 50,000 to 125,000 making Chicago have the third or fourth largest black population next to New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Washington (7). A large influx of colored people created many problems. First, there was a major problem in the availability in housing, of which was responded to with racism. This is the root for the hatred between the black and white communities. There wasn't enough housing in the "black belt" community, so Negroes began to spill into white neighborhoods. The very existence of a colored person in a neighborhood would lower the property values. When a house was sold to a colored person, the rent for the house would be higher than the previous, white owner's rent. Real Estate companies believed that "it is a matter of common knowledge that house after house...whether under white or black agents, comes to the Negro at an increased rental" (Sandburg 46). They sold housing despite the fact that "the Negro in Chicago, paid a lower wage than the white workman" (47), and that black people would have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Race Riots Advancement for African Americans in America Essay Race riots in America is a story told so little, but a story that is key to the hard work and road laid for African Americans. In the 20th century in times where we knew African Americans fought persistently for Civil Rights, seldom is their the story about the early 20th century. In the beginnings of the 20th century Riots broke out across all of the United States, over eight issues which included the following: Prejudice, Economic Competition, Political Corruption and Exploitation of Negro Voters, Police Inefficiency, Newspaper Lies about Negro Crime, Unpunished Crimes Against Negroes, Housing, Reaction of Whites and Negroes from War. Over the course of a span of fifty years more than eight riots broke out, including Wilmington race ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Meaning there was an over throw of the government, kicking out all African Americans out of their political offices. History tells us in brief that the race riot began from Alexander Manly's response about interracial relations claims made by Rebecca L Felton. ""When there is not enough religion in the pulpit to organize a crusade against sin; nor justice in the court house to promptly punish crime; nor manhood enough in the nation to put a sheltering arm about innocence and virtue––––if it needs lynching to protect woman's dearest possession form the ravening human beasts––––then I say lynch, a thousand times a week if necessary." Meaning White men are making it easy for African Americans to rape white women while they work out in their fields. Manly, a paper editor and owner of the Wilmington Daily Record responded to these claims, which are to be expected since he is mulatto. Manly responded stating that African American men are not rapist and push for these relations. Realistically we know this is not the only cause. Wilmington was a city on the rise, having the ability to be the biggest, richest urban city in America; Today's Atlanta. The population consisted of strong middle class, and professionals; contrary to many people thoughts, All African Americans were not enslaved, poor or illiterate. Many former slaves moved to Wilmington following the war; to make certain that they could remain, there was a Freedmen's Bureau office set up. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Springfield 1908 Race Riots Springfield 's history is a long and eventful one. Although there was one event that has seemed to haunt the citizens of Springfield for generations upon generations. This event is commonly referred to as the Springfield 1908 race riots. The race riots are remembered as a dark and painful part of springfield's history. On June first, a single black man named Joe James jumped off a freight train entering springfield, and began a streak of partying. He had been arrested soon after, and was sentenced for 50 days in the jail, but was allowed to run errands while on parole. WHile on parole on June 3rd, he left and didn't come back. While drunk, he had entered Clergy Ballard's house the night before, and had slashed the neck of Clergy after attempting to sexually assault his daughter. The next day, after waking up on a park bench, multiple of Clergy's relatives and neighbors ganged up on James and beat him senseless until police arrived to arrest James. They hauled him off to the town jail until shipped off to a court case. On August 14, over a month later, a newspaper reported that Mabel Hallam had been raped by George Richardson. She claimed that in the middle of the night while in her backyard, a black man came to her and allegedly raped her. There was no evidence, but George was convicted anyway. Sadly, this isn't the first instance of racism in springfield. Racial tensions had long been an issue in the midwest, and even in the rest of the country. Springfield was an ... • 29. Chicago Race Riots 1919 The Aftermath By the end, thirty–eight were dead (twenty–three blacks, fifteen whites), five hundred and thirty–seven injured, and one thousand black families made homeless. Thousands and thousands suffered from just one case. Many horrible things were done in the five months of rioting. If the police arrested the white man from the beginning, those thirty–eight people would be living today. Our society saw nothing wrong in fighting for equal rights with violence. The entire U.S. society is part of the blame for all the crucial events that occurred. After the riots of 1919 many of us learned from our mistakes, but it can not be taken back. There was no need to have a separate group of white people and a separate group of black people. We ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although it is nothing like the riots in Chicago years ago, racism is still common. Racism can be discreet, but hurtful. In the past few years, there have been many violent situations that have been considered racism. The shooting of Michael Brown, which caused riots very similar to the ones in Chicago. These riots that occurred in Missouri were scarily similar to the riots in the early 1900s. The destruction not only caused physical pain, but emotional pain as well. These actions made African Americans look like they did many years ago, and that is not the reality of the situation. This particular shooting was not the first, and probably not the last, that was driven by racism, or is said to be. Racism and segregation happen everyday. Is it ignored or simply overlooked because the foundation of our country is built upon this. As much as America has grown in racism, such as having an African American man as our president for many years now, there is still a lot of growing to be done. We, the people of the United States, need to look back on these mistakes, and the mistakes of others, and work to our best ability to change them and prevent them from ever happening again. • 33. Summary Of The Columbia Race Riot The Columbia Race Riot was best known for being the first major confrontation following World War II. It's a story of anger, fear, violence, and the law in a Tennessee town. The riot began with a 19 year old black navy veteran, James Stephenson and a white repairman. Their fight was over a botched radio repair. James Stephenson escaped being lynched in Columbia, Tennessee. The story had articles that were publish by Africans American and all white publishers. The newspaper articles from the publishers had many differences, but also had many similarities. The Nashville Globe by African Americans publishers and the Columbia Daily Herald by White Publishers caught my eye first. What similarities did both articles have? What differences did both articles have? After extensive research The Columbia Riot played a big role in the fight to freedom for African Americans. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Nashville Globe stated that part of the story, but also mentioned the riot. In the Columbia Daily there was one difference between each article. Columbia Daily stated that there were witness at the attack on Fleming. In the Columbia Daily they alleged that Negros slashed Fleming with glass, but in The Nashville Globe didn't mention anything about witnesses. • 37. Race Riot Essay This book review was on the book of Race Riot: Chicago in the Red Summer of 1919. It was a long–term study done by William M. Tuttle, Jr. Its objective was to make a comprehensive documentation of the events of 1919 in Chicago. The book dealt with all aspects and perspectives of the event. The author's objective was to leave no stone uncovered. That every aspect would be talked about in detail. Some important aspects that he arose throughout the book are going to be the focal point of this book review. I think that it would be proper to give a little history about the author. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many instances Tuttle states that the police not only condoned the beatings and killings but also participated in many of them. He often made the point of police involvement. Like when the two black officers came to arrest the suspected stoners the other white officers did not allow them to arrest them and let them go free. These actions put fear into blacks. Tuttle states, "They had expected little else of a police force which they had come to view as the armed representative of white hostility"(Tuttle, 33). These actions may explain the resentment and hatred of police today by many blacks. There was also a big influx of blacks to Chicago. The numbers of blacks migrating to Chicago was tremendous. Many reasons Tuttle states are the cause for this. The major one is just blacks wanting to leave the south. They wanted to leave the segregated south in hope of a better future. They were tired of the Jim Crow laws, lynching, poor school, and constant harassment. A black said, "Anywhere north will do us"(Tuttle, 79). Another reason was jobs. In the time of war, the big manufactories trying to keep up with the needs of the military were in dire needs of people to work. There were actual labor recruiters whose job was to go out and recruit blacks to work in the factories. Moreover, when the opportunity to work opened up blacks took them in full demand. The Controversy: The Elaine Race Riot Of 1919 Imagine forbidden to eat in the same restaurant, study in the same school, pray in the same church, or seek medical treatment in the same hospital as a white. This was Black America in the South during the Jim Crow era. Living under a code of laws created to separate the races and maintain a segregated society. The end of World War I brought a lot of change. Black troops were returning home from Western Europe determined to claim the same democracy for which they had fought. The continuous migration of blacks to the north led to labor conflicts. For the first time, whites had to compete with blacks for jobs. Whites turned their anger and frustration on black neighborhoods spurring racial conflict and spreading terror and fear nationwide. The Red Summer of 1919 featured riots occurring in numerous cities including Washington, DC; Chicago, Illinois; Knoxville, Tennessee; and Indianapolis, Indiana. There have been many race riots throughout history that have influenced future actions towards African Americans. The anti–African American was a process of assimilation for immigrants who felt that being against African Americans was a way to adopt the values of the dominant American culture and to be seen as American and not as an immigrant. One way to adopt the values of the dominant culture was to believe in racial segregation. The other officer on the scene, Officer Bennett, pushed back the crowed with his shotgun and the crowd moved back as Minikus and Frye struggled for control of the baton. In a few short moments, more officers responded to the 1199 call and Officer Wayne Wilson reacted immediately by dispatching baton blows to the stomach and ribs of Frye's brother Ronald and his mother who were fighting back against the officers. A Short Note On Oklahoma Race Riots And The Black Wall Street Tu Tulsa Race Riots On May 31–June 1, 1921, a series of actions occurred in Greenwood, a small district in the northern parts of Tulsa, Oklahoma, which are now called the Tulsa race Riots. Being a segregated city like the rest of Oklahoma, many of Tulsa's African American citizens resided in Greenwood– an area composed of predominately African American communities and business locations. The discovery of oil is the number one reason why Tulsa's economy flourished. There was an abundance of wealthy African Americans due to of this discovery. Because of the affluence and success within the African American community going on in this one particular area, it became known as the Black Wall Street. The whole chain of events began on May 30, 1921 when Dick Rowland, a young black man, allegedly assaulted a white elevator operator. Rowland was arrested the next day. However, outside the courthouse a group of raging whites gathered to attempt to lynch Rowland while a group of African Americans were protecting him to prevent the hanging. With the signal of one unintentional gunshot, many others rang out leaving some from both groups dead. With word getting around town of the riot, many angered whites stormed into the Greenwood District. Residencies were set on fire and many businesses were looted and burned to the ground. Planes also flew by dropping bombs in the area. With law enforcement on the whites' side, the officers were also a part of the riot. The National Guard was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For five straight days civilians fought the police, resulting in 43 deaths, 1,189 injuries, 7,200 arrests, and over 2,500 lootings. Fifty years later there are still visible results of the riot, and the event remains a source of reflection for Detroit citizens. Asides from the building damage and violence, the riots affected various aspects of Detroit's culture, including the Motown enterprise, which was producing chart–topping music that influenced listeners across the globe. As a genre of music that was known as "The Sound of Young America" in the 1960s, studying the Motown sound before and after the riots can provide insight into Detroit citizens' mindset. Between 1964 and 1967 Motown recorded sixty top fifteen pop chart hits, fourteen of which were number ones. But Motown's success was almost unfathomable to the music industry as a record label ran by an African American with African American musicians and producers. Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, managed to create black music and commercialize it directly to a white American audience that was often times only willing to consume music that was at least covered by a white musician. This all occurred in the wake of the "British Invasion", from 1964 to 1966, where young white Americans became drawn to male–dominated guitar–based groups. With Billboard's decision to combine ... A Media Controlled Race Riot A Media Controlled Race Riot The very first thing millions of people do when they wake up is check their phones, and log into whatever social media sites that they are a part of, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, and many more. On these sites, there are several ads or newspaper articles depicting different political messages or views. These advertisements and news articles can easily influence our thoughts on different aspects of life, such as religious view or racial identity. During the era of the race riot, the people of this time had their own version of media: the newspaper. More often than not, the first thing people did in the morning was read the newspaper. The image that comes to mind is businessmen sitting on trains or families gathered together in the morning reading the newspaper. In 1908, Springfield, Illinois experienced a race riot that was mainly controlled by the opinion they were receiving from the material from the media that they read and viewed. Material that was available to the people of Springfield were newspapers and occasionally plays. The Tulsa Race Riot Of 1921 The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 was the culmination of racial tensions both endemic in American society as a whole in the period, and certain tensions peculiar to Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1921, Greenwood and its African American population became the outlet for these often violent tensions seething among Tulsa's white population. The following paper seeks to shed some further understanding on what motivated and pushed the whites of Tulsa, Oklahoma to such a violent, extreme reaction during the riot. To answer the question, 'Why were the whites so mean?' it is necessary to understand the pre– existing conditions that existed in Tulsa, Oklahoma before the actual riot took place in 1921. Pre–existing racism in Tulsa was the foundation on which all the other causes of the riot were built upon. Wide–spread segregation was still common in America at that time and it was accepted by many in the North and South that whites were inherently superior to blacks. These views were particularly strong in the South, where emancipated blacks were seen as a threat and scourge to white Southern culture, a culture which was utterly dominated by whites and where blacks were oppressed with no hope of equal protection under the law, equal representation, etc. This was also the case in Tulsa in the early 1900s. Blacks were segregated against by the white residents and as a consequence formed their own community, called Greenwood, on the north side of the Frisco Railroad tracks, which was heralded by ... The Elaine Race Riots ' The Elaine Race Riots The Elaine Race Riot can be even said as the Elaine massacre that had taken place on September 30, 1919, in Elaine in Phillips County, Arkansas, in the Arkansas Delta. The fight started when around 100 African Americans, commonly black farmers on the farms of white landlords joined a consultation of the Progressive Farmers and the Household Union of America at a church in Hoop Spur, the Phillips County that was three miles north of Elaine. The assembly was managed by Robert Hill; he was the organizer of the Progressive Farmers and the Household Union of America. The main goal of the meeting was that one of the numerous black sharecroppers in the Elaine area during the former months was achieving better payments for their cotton crops from the white farm owners who conquered the area during the Jim Crow's era. The poor Black sharecroppers were frequently browbeaten in their hard work to collect payment for their cotton crops. The whites didn't like that the blacks were receiving a higher amount of wages than them, so the whites attacked such consolidation that was done by blacks, and the two groups swapped firing into the night. The two white men procured it upon themselves to show up, one was a deputy sheriff, and the other was a railroad employee who attended it. It was all after that, that the combat had taken place. Wilmington Race Riots: The American Civil Rights Movement Almost no event had such a singularly negative effect on the American Civil Rights movement as the Wilmington Race Riots of 1898, a white–supremacist coup d'état that occurred here in North Carolina shortly after the end of Reconstruction. On November 10, 1898, racial tension that had been clouding in the South ever since the end of the Civil War and the election of Republicans during Reconstruction broke in a destructive thunderclap of mob violence. The Wilmington race riots set back civil rights progress not only in Wilmington, but all across the nation. Only as recently as 2006 has the state legislature formally apologized for the event, which was responsible for turning Wilmington into a white–majority city and marking the end of several decades of progress in the state. First and foremost, the uprising had an immediate and catastrophic effect on the city's cultural diversity, driving African–Americans out of the city and cementing political power in the hands of white supremacists. In the 1900 gubernatorial election, for example, which was exactly one year after the riots, over 99.9 percent of the votes cast were for the Democratic candidate, notable white supremacist Charles Aycock; in the preceding 1896 gubernatorial election, the Democrats only garnered 40.8 percent of the votes. During the 1960s, racism was on a high among the American people, with a particular focus on the African American race that was trying to pass the American Civil Rights Movement. The art piece addresses not only Warhol's political views, but also the inequality people faced in a land that was meant to be "free". Regarding the piece and the traditional roles of artists, in my opinion, the role that is most important is "artists help us to see the world in new or innovative ways". Causes And Effects Of Race Riots In America The working conditions were very difficult, tiring, and dangerous but the workers were fine with that considering they were getting paid three times more than they were in the south. Female migrants also searched for work but found it much more of a challenge due to competition for domestic labor positions. There was a large amount of competition for jobs but considering the increasing population percentage in crowded cities, living space was also a competition many African Americans were faced with. The North offered more food and better housing, but also some unhealthy and overcrowded accommodations that helped spread tuberculosis . Segregation was not legal in the North like it was in the South but racism and prejudice were wide spread through the United States. The official death toll was 35(Patrick, 1999) but it is believed that many more hundreds were killed, because many bodies were dumped into the river of coal mines or burned (Patrick, 1999). Here are other numbers that Mr. Patrick writes in his article, 1500 African American homes destroyed, 600 businesses destroyed, 21 churches, 21 restaurants, 30 stores, 2 movie theaters, a hospital, a bank, a post office, libraries, and schools. It was where they were free to prosper after a long history of slavery and discrimination. Lives Changed Many people had their lives destroyed, fortunes lost, and names tarnished. • 122. Causes Of The Oklahoma Race Riot Greenwood was an African American community that thrived in Tulsa, Oklahoma and was well flourished with limitless opportunities. It was separated from white Tulsa by railroad tracks but was under white Tulsa's political and police authorities. The Tulsa Race Riot happened in 1921. The residents and businesses of the African American community of Greenwood were attacked by a white mob killing many and bringing the whole community to ashes. There were many deeply rooted social causes that contributed to the horrendous action, as the elements fueling the riot were there long before. The trigger for the Tulsa riot was the arrest of a black man for allegedly assaulting a white female in an elevator and an inflammatory article that was published in a white newspaper. Greenwood residents feared a lynching and so gathered in front of the courthouse where he was held, to protect him from a lynch mob. While a deputy was trying to disarm an armed black man, a shot was fired, and this triggered the riot. The National Guard units, the law enforcement officers and the men deputized by Tulsa officials worked together to control what they termed as a Negro uprising. The whites invaded the black Tulsa community, looting and burning their properties and preventing any rescue operations because they saw that such behavior had been legitimized. The black Tulsa was turned into a mass of black clouds of smoke. The aftermath of WW1 was a time of racial violence in America because whites reacted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Chicago Race Riots Of 1919 Chicago Race of Riots of 1919 The Chicago Race Riots of 1919 helped to further show how African Americans are looked as inferior, not just within the citizens of the United States, but the Congress and criminal justice system. White and black beaches were separated by an invisible line; the black beach on 25th street and whites on 29th street. The story of Eugene Williams swimming on the beach worsened after a white police officer, Dan Callahan, refused to intervene or arrest the group of white men responsible for his death, in turn starting the deadliest racial violence in Chicago history. The riot lasted a week with protestors full of rage mostly on the South side with white gangs attacking isolated blacks and blacks attacking isolated whites. In "City of Courts" by Michael Willrich he talks about how the social causes of crime, specifically about the criminal justice system of Chicago. Michael Willrich goes into great detail about whether crime should be an individual failing or a social failing. He claimed that because of the "social" conditions, such as heredity and the environment, it drove individuals to commit crime. This relates to racially motivated crimes or riots, which was motivated by heightened tensions because of promise of employment and dignity for blacks, since the black population doubled from 1916 to 1918. Blacks have always talked about joining white–controlled unions, and "in the face of violence, black leaders had begun preaching self defense ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 130. Race Riots Of The Civil Rights Movement In 1965, people has sunk back into complacency with the relatively few gains they had achieved in the civil rights movement. A new development also appeared in the form of President Lyndon Johnson's voting–rights act but before this would happen the greatest race riot of that time exploded in Watts, Los Angeles. The riot was a culmination of racial tension and anger that came with the lower class black experience. The riot paved the way for more separatism in American society; notions of racial unity had been drowned out. Another similar explosion of black outrage happened in West Chicago and also then followed in other major cities like Boston, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Newark, Detroit etc. Massive property damage and numerous black lives were ... • 134. The Wilmington Race Riot Currently, there has been a major event occurring in the town of Wilmington, North Carolina between citizens of many races, and many political parties, including the Republican Party, Democratic Party, and the Populist Party. These parties had different political and racial views on government policies, and who should rule. Wilmington is a strong religious community, and is the center of African American political and economic success. After the end of the Civil War, laws allowed blacks to get an education and were able to manage their own businesses. Since the government created laws that allowed blacks to vote, there has been some controversy between whites and blacks. A major event occurred called the Fusion Coalition. When it was time to vote, people "fused" their voters and hoped to defeat the Democratic Party by doing this. Propaganda and media is put up all over town to intimidate people and make people believe certain things, based on what type of propaganda it is. People have started to fall for these propaganda posters, and it causes people to believe whatever they see. This sparked the current Race Riot because it actually led people to believe that blacks are bad and that they should not have a say. • 138. Causes Of The Chicago Race Riot When most people here the topic of the Chicago Race Riot they usually do not know a lot of information about it. The Chicago Race Riot was an important part of history for the state of Illinois and America as a country. This paper will discuss the causes of the Chicago Race Riot, violence between Americans, and how is important to Illinois's history. The main causes of the Chicago Race Riot are very significant to how it all started. According to Tuttle's book, Race Riot: Chicago in the Red Summer of 1919 there are three main causes that all relate to the starting of the violent outbreak. The first cause all started at 29th street beach. There at the beach, the blacks tried to join the whites, but just the opposite happened (pp.5). The whites did everything in their power to expel the blacks from their beach (pp.5). They did just that until the blacks came back with reinforcement in their numbers causing the whites to leave their beach temporarily (pp.5). This cause basically shows that ever since the blacks fought for their way out of slavery that they were not looked at as equals. The whites still looked at themselves as superiors. They did not show it unless one of the blacks stepped out of line. For example, the incident at the 29th street beach when the blacks tried to swim at the white's beach. Just by how Tuttle explained that the law was unwritten showed that whites mostly kept it not very public about their feelings until the race riot erupted. The incident at ... • 142. The Impact Of The Tulsa Race Riot On The Greenwood District How did the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 impact the Greenwood District The Tulsa Race Riot impacted so many people and all it gets is a paragraph or one page in an Oklahoma history textbook. This event put Tulsa on the map and it barely gets any recognition. How are people supposed to change the world if information is constantly hidden? The riot didn't completely leave a negative impact. Don't be fooled, it was terrible and extremely destructive, but some good came out of it. For example, in my case I swell with pride when I hear about how successful and booming the black community was in Tulsa. It makes me appreciate my hometown and what it has to offer. The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 impacted the Greenwood District by creating more roots in Tulsa, destroying the lives and homes of families, and hiding the significance of Greenwood and how prosperous it was. Where does someone get their views, traditions, and fears from if they don't identify with a culture? There is literally a culture for everything. There's a millennial culture, gaming culture, food culture, etc.–you name it! Culture itself is the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively. Whether one knows it or not, they identify with something. In the book "Tulsa's Historic Greenwood District" by Hannibal B. Johnson it states "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots–Marcus Garvey." (Johnson Page 9). This quote ... As World War I was beginning for the United States things were heating up in East St. Louis, Illinois. Anti–black riots killed or injured over one hundred black civilians. Then a Silent Parade of over ten thousand black citizens from New York broke out. The creation of the NAACP also influenced the Little Rock, Arkansas incident, Martin L. King's "I Have a Dream" Speech, and many other things which eventually led to equal rights for everyone with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This paper will explain the riots and how it shaped our government into providing equal jobs for all races. The East St. Louis Race Riots As stated in a YouTube video from Nine Network, St. Louis back in 1917 was a place of many jobs and it was often said that if you couldn't find work anywhere in St. Louis then you wouldn't be able to find work anywhere else. However, they failed and became involved in a standoff which evolved into a shootout. MOVE had turned the row house into a fortified compound complete with weapons. After the standoff had gone on for several hours Philadelphia's police commissioner Gregore J. Sambor, with the mayor W. Wilson Goode's approval, bombed the compound which was in a residential area. The ensuing flame eventually burned down 61 homes and severly damaged more homes in the area. The bombing killed six adults and five children who were inside the house. • 154. The Causes And Effects Of The Detroit Race Riot Of 1967 Law and Disorder White Americans have discriminated against African Americans ever since the first white men–bringing with them their slaves–set foot in what would become the continental United States. America's roots lie in imperialistic expansionism during which white men took advantage of those with a darker skin color whom they deemed unequal. The photograph of the devastating aftermath of the Detroit Race Riot of 1967 vividly captures the white Americans sense of dominance towards the disenfranchised African Americans. Though the photo lacks an easily identifiable original source, it has circulated around the internet and now serves as an epitome of the voiceless black American community's stance in the wake of destruction against the rest of America; it signifies what is still known as "The Great Rebellion" in Detroit, as the black Americans expressed their rage against the failure of American institutions (Flock). The picture's illustration of the rubble among the street, pillaged stores, and thick black clouds of smoke billowing into the sky conveys the ruins that not only Detroit suffered, but also African Americans across America. The graphic image depicts the inequality and oppression black Americans endured in the face of the unscrupulous, corrupt white American empire. Ultimately, the photo represents United States as an imperial country founded on racial hierarchy. Racial divisions have plagued America throughout history. For example, during the 1960s, the ...
