American Jazz Artist Miles Davis Essay
Kind of Blue. This studio album released by American jazz artist Miles Davis is heavily regarded as
the quintessential and definitive jazz album. Many critics regard it as "jazz's greatest record" and
one of the best albums of all time. Along with redefining and revolutionizing jazz, its influence on
music has been unprecedented. The music theory, style, and organization of Kind of Blue has been
one of the biggest influences on several genres since its creation; including but not limited to rock,
funk, fusion, indie, and hip–hop. The culture of jazz is extremely unique in music, and Davis's
album changed that culture and changed the culture of several different genres and music itself. To
truly understand the massive legacy and influence created by Kind of Blue, one would have go back
to the beginning of jazz all the way to modern music. Jazz might just be the most unique genre of
music in the world. Pairing true artistry and creativity with immense technicality and skill creates
music that is simply incomparable. Originating from the African–American communities of New
Orleans in the 1910's, jazz was a fresh new creation heavily predominated by African–Americans.
Early forms featured brass–bands playing a ragtime and swing style of music, with improvisation,
and unique and syncopated rhythm and blues. Within music, syncopated means offbeat rhythm.

Jazz Influence On African American Culture
Jazz music was born from the creative hands of black people who experienced oppression and
slavery in America in the late 18th century. Expression of a resistance against the racist and
oppressive political system was manifested in the way of black Americans to play their music.
History has recorded that slavery and racial discrimination in America gave birth precisely to the
music of resistance, such as the Spiritual, gospel and blues. This phenomenon could be interpreted
as a cultural resistance of black people to Westernization, in terms of religion, culture, politics, and
how to make music. It was because before they were brought to America, they have a distinctive
culture of Africa.

As a result of the spirit of Jazz that was dialectical, liberal and deconstructive, an old style of
playing music was negated by the ideas of new music. Then, the ideas led into the new styles of
playing music. In this case, the chronology of the development of jazz was divided in three time
periods where each period gave birth to a specific style of playing music.
The first period was traditional jazz period (1890–1940) that gave birth to Ragtime, New Orleans,
Dixieland, New Orleans in Chicago and Kansas City, and Swing. The second one is modern jazz

Harvey Mason And The Canopus Drums
"Harvey Mason is probably the most recorded and most influential drummer /percussionist in this
genre." proclaims Nathan East, member of fOURPLAY, prominent Jazz, R&B, and Rock artist. Mr.
Mason was born February 22nd, 1947 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He is international known as a
drummer. Harvey Mason can play the Canopus Drums, Sabian cymbals, Remo drumheads, DW
pedals, Vic Firth drumsticks, and Roc N Soc drum thrones. To add to that astonishing list, he even
has his own signature drumstick and Vic Firth Harvey Mason Chameleon signature drumstick. In
past years, he used various instruments such as Gretsch Drums, Premier drums, Rogers Drums, Tana
Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Toca percussion and Gibraltar Hardware. I do not know what those are
but Harvey Mason had to be a great musician to master all those instruments.
Since a young age Harvey Mason never had a problem picking up beats. He remembers lying in bed
at night, locking into the rolling groove of his mother's washing machine, fluffing his pillow into a
ball and playing along to it with his fingers. Harvey started taking formal drum lessons at age 7,
playing in school groups eventually purchasing his first drum set at 16 years old. He played so
amazingly well that Atlantic City 's Wonder Gardens Club proprietor, Sonny McCall, got a unique

Modern 4–string, fretted, horizontally played electric bass was first introduced by Paul Tutmarc in
the 1930s. Later in 1950s Leo Fender developed this idea so it could be mass–produced and finally
introducing the Fender Precision bass in 1951. Electric bass then started to coexist with the double
basses in jazz, since there were bassists starting to use electric bass as they are easier to be played,
could be easily transported, and were able to be amplified to any volume without feeding back

Maum Café agreed to arrange a formal jazz concert for the first time. The main theme of this concert
was "Smooth Jazz with Zino Park at Maum". Before the concert began, the band members
introduced themselves to the audience. The names of players were:

Zino Park used keyboard instead of piano because keyboard could play with many different sound
effects. The title of the fourth song was called, "Let's get away from it all". In their fourth song

Miles Davis a songwriter and an influential jazz musician. Miles Davis is considered one of the top
jazz musicians of his era. Miles Dewey Davis III was born May 25, 1926, in Alton, IIinois. With his
mother being a Musician and his father being a Dental surgeon Davis grew up in a supportive
middle–class household. Since his mother was a musician she encouraged her son to play the
trumpet. Davis took many music lessons privately and in school, when free he would experiment
with modern jazz. Miles then dropped out of school and became a full–time jazz musician. Since
then Miles Davis worked on developing his style that defined his trumpet playing. Davis soon felt a
need to rid his music of bebop's style and to restore jazz's more melodic elements. The result was the
influential recording Birth of the Cool, which gave "birth" to the so–called "cool," or West Coast,
jazz school. This recording established Davis' musical identity. Miles Davis then recorded and

The Sound Of Upright String Bass Performance
Upright string bass performance is an ever–changing profession that has played a vital role to the
history of the jazz ensemble. The bass has evolved more through jazz in the past one hundred years
than since the instrument's conception in the 15th century. In early jazz bands, the bass had a simple
and extremely conscientious style, which limited itself to furnishing fundamental harmonic tones.
One of the greatest bass players in this style is Pops Foster, known for the extraordinary power and
attack of his playing. Later on in the mid–20th century, bassists like Jimmy Blanton and Oscar
Pettiford pushed the string bass into a new light where the instrument's unsuspected potential as a
solo instrument would be realized. The bass also underwent a radical change from entirely acoustic
to entirely electric which has changed modern music forever. Electric bassists like Stanley Clarke
and Jaco Pastorius could now play many notes at once and utilize the fusion aspect of the music and
the instrument. The role of the bass in jazz has been constantly undervalued and misunderstood.

Awakening, after getting very little sleep that night, I knew today was not going to go well. My
mom had dreaded this day for weeks now. The thought of my sister leaving was destroying her. My
dad and I didn't think about it that much, because we knew she would be home to visit often.
Loading the car with my sister's clothes and other essentials, the only thing anyone said to me was,
"Bryce can you grab this for your sister?" and "Bryce hold this so your sister doesn't have to." It
took about an hour to get everything loaded into both cars. My mom spent a couple minutes to look
at my sister's hollow room before we left, reliving her favorite memories. Realizing that my sister
has grown up and it's time to move on, she looked as if she might start to cry. "Mom are you ready?"
I asked. "Ready as I'll ever be", she whispered with her head down.
The drive to Magnolia, Arkansas was not at all entertaining. There were few words spoken, and it
was storming all the way there which just made it worse. There was the occasional, "Does anyone
need to use the bathroom?" or "Does anyone want something to eat?" My mom never once mumbled
a word. Since she couldn't stop what was about happen, she sat in her seat reliving the past.
When we arrived at SAU, I was quite pleased with the college my sister had chosen to attend. The
storms had cleared, letting the sun shine on the freshly cut, bright green grass. There were intriguing
flowers neighboring the dorms and little kids fishing with their parents in the beautiful pond. This
was a great environment for my sister, and I felt she would be capable of accomplishing her goals
here.
"Do you need help unpacking your cars?" asked young gentlemen positioned outside the
dormitories. "Yes thank you, and where could we find check–in?" my mother replied. The men
answered, "Freshman dorms and apartments will be the small building on the left." The next part
was the most challenging. We had discovered that Michaela would be living on the third floor of her
building. Thankfully, we had several college students who helped us unpack and take two carloads

There were four instrument used but only 3 people playing them in this event. One person was
playing the drums, one was playing the bass, and one was playing both the keyboard and some tech
machine. They also had someone running a computer that was projecting a video on a screen that
went with the music. There were technically 8 songs but they never ended. It was just nonstop music
for about 30–45 minutes. It was kind of hard to tell when a song was somewhat ending and a new
one was starting. Some beats and melodies were repeating which was helpful to tell that they were
still playing the same song.

more towards the front. With that, you could tell that this was suppose to be a jazz show. Now there
were not any brass instruments, but this was also a jazz fusion show so it was not going to be 100%

The composers were Brad Townsend, Nick Zielinski, and Mark Siegenthaler. They all worked
together on the songs and it was a joint work. I am not completely sure if there was an implied

Each semester, the bands host a concert or two to play for the public. I had the chance to attend the
first one of the Spring semester and analyze it. Within this review I will cover one prominent piece
per band that really stuck out in the whole event. The LSU Spring Jazz Showcase demonstrated the

First, the Jazz Lab Band's take on "Shiny Stockings" was particularly enjoyable for its calm but

saxophone player just announced each name. All their songs had melody theme which stay in the
chorus of them. The saxophone, flugelhorn and trumpet phrases were all legato during their solos

each person did their solo they crescendo leading to the end of them. I really enjoyed that the lead of
the band explained the background information of every piece that was played I tried to take that
into consideration while listening. If he didn't put his explanation in before each song I wouldn't be
able to understand the main concept. The song that stood out to me the most was Dance Cadaverous,
which is a mood piece. Dance Cadaverous song connected with me more than the others simply

On the evening of October 18th, 2015 I attended the live Jazz music performance of Nilson Matta's
"Brazilian Voyage". The performance was held at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, located in the Jazz
Lincoln Center, in New York City. Nilson Matta is a Brazilian bassist, composer, and producer.
Matta is considered to be one of the greatest bass musicians in the world, and has earned great
reputation for his unique sounds (Nilson). The staff members were very welcoming, and were all
dressed in black attire. The venue had dim lighting, and each table had a lighted candle; which
created a nice romantic and intimate atmosphere. Behind the stage, there is a spectacular scene that
overlooks Central Park, and the city. At the beginning of the performance, Nilson Matta, and three
other musicians walked up on stage, and introduced themselves. The musicians were, Mauricio
Zottarelli (drummist), Craig Handy (saxophonist/flautist), Helen Sung (pianist), and of course
Nilson Matta (bassist). Matta commenced the performance with a piece called "Para Ti" (For You),
which he dedicated to Rio de Jainero. Matta began to play the double–bass instrument. Although, it
was huge in size, the timbre was dull. Following this, the rest of the musicians played along,

originally considered its influences re–imagined themselves through Rock and Roll's prism –

twentieth century composers and artists, Davis grappled throughout his career with drug abuse,
however, his music is still inspirational today and will impact and influence future generations and
push them to their creative boundaries. Miles Dewey Davis III was born in Alton, Illinois on 26 May
1926, and was raised in an upper middle class home in East St. Louis. His father was a dentist and
music teacher who introduced his son the trumpet at thirteen years old. "Davis quickly developed a
talent for playing the trumpet under the private tutelage of Elwood Buchanan. Buchanan emphasized
playing the trumpet without vibrato, which was contrary to the common style used by trumpeters
such as Louis Armstrong, and which would come to influence and help develop the Miles Davis
style." While he was in high school Davis played his music professionally. When he was seventeen,
Davis was invited by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker to join them to replace a sick member of
their band. In 1944 he followed Parker to New York where he enrolled in the Julliard school of

Bebop was developed during the 1940's and is one of the most artistic styles of jazz music. The
word Bebop focused more of the freedom of creativity rather than rhythmic aspects. The word
bebop is an onomatopoeic of a staccato two–tone phrase distinctive in this kind of music. Bebop
also gave soloists more room for improvisation. Bebop differs from the composition of the swing
era and is characterized by fast tempos, asymmetrical phrasing, intricate melodies, and rhythm
sections that expand on their role as tempo–keepers. It appeared to sound racing, nervous, erratic,
and fragmented. To jazz musicians and music lovers, bebop was a beautiful revolution in the art of
jazz. Much of a song in bebop style would be improvising, which is when the only threads holding
the work together are underlying harmonies played by the rhythm section. Bebop tunes were usually
taken from poplar swing–era songs and reused with new and more complex melodies forming new

  • 1. American Jazz Artist Miles Davis Essay Kind of Blue. This studio album released by American jazz artist Miles Davis is heavily regarded as the quintessential and definitive jazz album. Many critics regard it as "jazz's greatest record" and one of the best albums of all time. Along with redefining and revolutionizing jazz, its influence on music has been unprecedented. The music theory, style, and organization of Kind of Blue has been one of the biggest influences on several genres since its creation; including but not limited to rock, funk, fusion, indie, and hip–hop. The culture of jazz is extremely unique in music, and Davis's album changed that culture and changed the culture of several different genres and music itself. The performance was held at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, located in the Jazz Lincoln Center, in New York City. Nilson Matta is a Brazilian bassist, composer, and producer. Matta is considered to be one of the greatest bass musicians in the world, and has earned great reputation for his unique sounds (Nilson). The staff members were very welcoming, and were all dressed in black attire. The venue had dim lighting, and each table had a lighted candle; which created a nice romantic and intimate atmosphere. Behind the stage, there is a spectacular scene that overlooks Central Park, and the city. At the beginning of the performance, Nilson Matta, and three other musicians walked up on stage, and introduced themselves. The musicians were, Mauricio Zottarelli (drummist), Craig Handy (saxophonist/flautist), Helen Sung (pianist), and of course Nilson Matta (bassist). Matta commenced the performance with a piece called "Para Ti" (For You), which he dedicated to Rio de Jainero. Matta began to play the double–bass instrument. Although, it was huge in size, the timbre was dull. Following this, the rest of the musicians played along, creating beautiful harmonies, and Brazilian rhythms.
