ALL ABOUT THE BASS – MEGHAN TRAINOR
MISE-EN-SCENE
 Bright coloured backgrounds are used in this music video, this is conventional for a pop music video
as it highlights the positive message behind it. It correlates with the upbeat melody of the song –
drawing the listener & watcher in as the colours are eye catching & memorable.
 The costume choices are quite revealing – as in they show a lot of skin. This is conventional for pop
music videos as they are trying to appeal to a younger demographic by being fashionable. The
costume choices also provide a narrative correlation with the lyrics – as the artist is singing about
feeling comfortable in any types of clothing, talking about body positivity.
 The colour choices of the costumes are conventional for a music video as they are vibrant & exciting
– creating a happy vibe. The target audience will find these colours eye-catching & exciting to look
at. It’s also attractive to look at against the pastel theme of the background – as they stand out.
 Props used such as various food items provide a narration to the song, as she is talking about body
image: saying that ‘You know I won't be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll’ Then showing her with lots
of cake. This links to the lyrics in regard to women not eating enough?
 The setting being a real life dolls house connotes that women are made to feel as though they have
to be like dolls – that their appearance has to be what is considered perfect by the medias
inaccurate portrayals of body types. This is narrated by the lyrics: I see the magazine workin' that
Photoshop, We know that shit ain't real, come on now, make it stop. She is addressing this with the
use of setting choice – highlighting the reality of women's oppression. By talking about ‘shit aint real’
she is referring to women being barbie dolls – which are plastic & fake. She also expresses this by
dressing the black women up as dolls, making them look as fake as possible, again, like dolls.
