Writing Analysis
1.
2. The writing on a front cover of Kerrang! Always promotes atleast
one band in every issue. These can vary from Bring Me The
Horizon to softer rock bands like Paramore. It uses promotive
language such as “NEW GOD OF ROCK?”, this suits the audience
because it entices them and suits the stereotypical audience of
young males that listen to music a lot and are very involved and
interested in the music they listen to, we know this as they relate
the band member as a “god”. All of the covers include previews
of posters that are included in the magazine. The text is quite
angry and aggressive, “NORTHERN UPROAR!” and “HAYLEY
WILLIAMS DOING IT HER WAY!” make the magazine appear
rebellious and suits the stereotype that rock is a hardcore and
aggressive genre that is about breaking the rules. “GERARD WAY
GOES J-ROCK!” the writing is person to people who only know
about the rock genre and know what J-rock is. This gives the
impression that people who listen to rock are grouped together
and rock is something that is personal and in common with all
the fans of the genre. The text is also quite informal, including
no complex language, “THE BEST IN TOWN GO GLOBAL!” is an
example of this. Instead of mentioning that The Blackout are
beginning their tour across the world, they instead use the
phrase “GO GLOBAL!” because it’s quicker to read and less
informal and suits the target audience more than something of a
more complex and formal language would.
3. Again, all Kerrang! articles are similar because within the
contents they all include the same subheadings in every
issue. This is useful because it makes the magazine more
familiar in every issue and easier to find certain things.
Instead of giving actual names for each article, the
magazine uses the names of bands. The audience can use
this to look at the articles including bands that they are
familiar with and ones that they’ve not yet heard of. This
page uses slang such as “SWAG”. “Swag” can be described
as something impressive such as the appearance of
someone or something. The use of this word again makes
the magazine seem more personal to fans of the rock
genre. “Gig Guide” is also interesting because the use of
the word “gig” is more stereotypical to the audience of
Kerrang! than one of a classical magazine, which would
probably prefer to use the word “Orchestra” or “Concert”.
The article also includes a snippet of text that the editor
writes about some of the bands. This makes the people
who make the magazine have a relationship with the fans
of the magazine and shows that they’re all fans of the
same band/style of music. In some issues, on the contents
page there is a joke or a humorous quote to create an
informal and entertaining tone to the magazine. This builds
a relationship between the editors and producers of the
magazine and the fans who read it.
4. The writing in articles in Kerrang! Can either be in the
form of an interview or an article. I have chosen to do an
interview as it is on a more personal level. In the articles,
there is a lot of description of the lifestyles the band
members lead and the choices of different words are
very important. “Teen Spirit” groups together teenagers
and gives a happy, entertaining feel. This is contrasted to
the title “Wild Child” in an interview with Taylor
Momsen. The writing is personal and lets the fans know
more about the artist that is being interviewed. It also
has the ability of promoting the artists’ upcoming
album/track by mentioning the album in some interview
questions. The answers are often very informal and
contain profanities to let the reader build a relationship
with the artist and make them feel like they know them. I
plan to feature questions that fans have asked, this
answers their questions about gossip that has been
featured on the internet and also builds a stronger
relationship with the artist.
