Similarities And Differences Between Sherlock And Watson
Sherlock Holmes and Watson the most iconic duo from a novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that have been reimagined many times over the
years. Watson and Sherlock are both well rounded characters with large differences that depend on each other in their quests to solve many murder
mysteries.
Dr. Watson the narrator for sherlock stories is a calm down to earth military doctor who works with Sherlock throughout his investigations his character
is dependent on Sherlock for many reasons. In the live action television series Sherlock they made John Watson's dependence on sherlock very apparent.

This builds their friendship since watson is the only person to not treat Sherlock like a freak. Watson will often save Sherlock from dangers he put
himself into. In the live action television series Sherlock willingly got in the cab with the murderer and almost took the poison out of desperation
to outsmart the murder. If watson didn't follow them and kill the murder he could have most likely died. We will never really know if Sherlock
was in control of that situation but watson showed up in time to make sure nothing bad happened to Sherlock and got more clues off the murderer.
Sherlock has Watson move in for a reason and it is obviously to help Sherlock where he is weak. With watson being more humane than sherlock he
can provide a different perspective for cases and clues that sherlock can not easily see. In the television series sherlock, Sherlock and Watson were
inspecting a shoe left at a crime scene, Sherlock asked Watson of his opinion about the shoe Watson can only say it has been used, and the size was
large, therefore it belongs to a male. Sherlock then commented on Watson's observation skills "An outside eye, a second opinion. It's very useful to
me.". To Sherlock Watson was like and external piece of his mind helping him think up the rest he could not. Watson works as a counterbalance,
softening out the hard edges of Holmes' complex personality. in The Hounds of Baskerville 'some people see the light,

How To Write An Essay On The Hound Of The Baskervilles
The Hound of the Baskervilles On March 25, 1902, publisher George Newnes first issued Sir Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, an
exhilarating novel filled with mystery, romance, and incessant suspense.
As Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson discussed the origin of a strange walking stick that a stranger left at their door, the owner of the stick, Doctor
James Mortimer, knocked on their door and told the dynamic duo his strange story of the Baskerville family's horrifying curse. His story told of a
man named Sir Charles Baskerville (the next heir), who recently came to claim the Baskerville estate and had died from a heart attack a few months
after living on the estate in the moors of Devonshire. Upon the Doctor's examination of both the body and the crime scene, Dr. Mortimer found
footprints of a large beast a distance away from the victim. In reference to this monstrous beast, he states, "I find that before the terrible event occurred
several people had seen a creature upon the moor which corresponds with this Baskerville demon, and which could not possibly be any animal known
to science. They all agreed that it was a huge creature, luminous, ghastly, and spectral" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sherlock Holmes sent Dr. Watson to accompany Sir Henry Baskerville to his estate to investigate the case and keep Sir Henry safe from any potential
danger. By living with Sir Henry and acting as his protector, Watson and Sir Henry became friends. When Sir Henry travel alone in the moor, Watson
always accompanied him, even when he sometimes felt uncomfortable doing so. Sir Henry openly shared his concerns and his feelings toward Ms.
Stapleton with Dr. Watson, and Dr. Watson listened and responded to him. Sharing feelings and concerns demonstrates that friends must be honest and
open toward one another and always be ready to listen or give

Queenie Volupedis Murder
We believe Queenie Volupedis staged an accident to cover up for her murder. We arrived at the Volupedis home at 1:30 AM to find Queenie
standing with a shocked face in front of her dead husband lying at the bottom of the stairs, glass still in hand. Food was cooking on the stove when
we arrived, and everything besides Queenie's husband was still intact. Queenie reported Arthur slipped and fell down the stairs. The autopsy reported
Arthur died from a head wound and had been intoxicated. To begin with, Queenie still had a shocked face when the investigating team arrived, even
after speaking to her friends and staying that way for 30 minutes. As a rule, people do not go back into shock after coming out of shock. This shows
that Queenie had tried

A Tale Of Two Cities Chapter 3 Essay
The following extract from chapter three is an example of how the supernatural and the scientific are continuously contrasting in the novel:
'In your opinion there is a diabolical agency which makes Dartmoor an unsafe abode for a Baskerville–that is your opinion?' 'At least I might go the
length of saying that there is some evidence that this may be so.' 'Exactly. But surely, if your supernatural theory be correct, it could work the young
man evil in London as easily as in Devonshire. A devil... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this part, he shows incredulity and thinks that such thing must be the work of something supernatural. Watson's comparison of Holmes and the
people living in the Dartmoor enhances again this contrast between the city detective who appeals more to science and the superstitious servants that
give paranormal meanings to the howl of a dog. A contradiction with Watson's ideas can also be seen in this extract. He first claims to have common
sense and that is what makes him deny the existence of the hound, but then after reflecting on what he had heard, he justifies this saying that 'facts are
facts' and this generates doubts and confusion in his mind. It is important to notice how Doyle develops a mysterious and frightening scene in our
minds the moment we imagine how terrifying must be to hear such sound that even Watson, another man of science, starts to doubt about the existence
of this enigmatic and evil

To Kill A Mockingbird Summary Chapter 14
In chapter five Holmes and watson go to sir henry's hotel, holmes thinks that the other people at the hotel can be connected to the man watching
him because the man watching him is keeping his distance when they get to his room sir henry is angry because someone stoles an old black boot
leaving one brown one and one black one. He apologizes for getting angry over something so small but the boots mean a lot more to holmes than
the rest of them. Holmes ask sir henry if he knows anyone with a black beard and that matches the description of a butler at the manner that's

Analysis Of Sherlock Holmes In The Hound Of Baskervilles
Throughout The Hound of Baskervilles, Holmes is very detailed and factual with his information that comes across to him. Holmes is a great
investigator in this novel, and is really motivated to find the clues and evidence to conclude the case with Watson. With Holmes being a big role in
this novel, it gives the reader what all to look for being small details and obvious details. The usage of deduction is very well informed, especially by
Sherlock Holmes giving him the ability to solve this mystery. I choose to write about Holmes and the way he uses deduction, and how important his
quotes and solutions are to solving the mystery. At the beginning of the novel we found out very quickly how good Holmes is at judging clues.
Holmes and Watson never seeing the walking stick that was left outside the house Holmes concluded lots from it. Holmes showed that the owner of
the walking stick had a spaniel, and walked a lot using the stick. These observations Holmes discovered set a tremendous tone early at the novel
showing how the little things are just as needed as the big ones in investigating. Two quotes from the book that really fall into Holmes judging clues
are "presume nothing", and "the world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observe". These two quotes both tell not to look over
things that are right in front of you, because sometimes the small things could answer your solution to problems. Holmes' quotes show the reader how
intelligent he is,

Dr. Watson
In the episode, A Study in Pink from the television show Sherlock one of the main secondary characters are Dr. John Watson. Dr. Watson unlike most
of the other characters actually shows his appreciation for Sherlock Holmes brilliant findings. He complements Holmes on how he pays close attention
to the markings on his cellular phone that gave evidence that the previous owner had a drinking problem. Dr. John Watson said, "How can you possibly
know about the drinking?" Sherlock Holmes then responds by saying "Shot in the dark. Good one, though. Power connection – tiny little scuff marks

When Sgt Sally Donovan says to Watson "You know why he's here? He's not paid or anything. He likes it. He gets off on it. The weirder the crime,
the more he gets off. And you know what?... One day just showing up won't be enough. One day we'll be standing around a body, andSherlock Holmes
will be the one that put it there" when Watson questions her about her statement she responds by calling him a psychopath "Because he's a
psychopath... Psychopaths get bored". Anderson is another character who can be seen as questioning the mental state of the protagonist or to cause
the viewer doubt about how smart and clever Sherlock is such as in the scene when the team raids Holmes flat and finds the lady in pink's case that
was missing Anderson says" We found the case. According to "someone", the murderer has the case, and we found it in the hands of our favorite
psychopath". However, Sherlock Holmes responds in a witty fashion ensuring the viewers and Watson of his cleverness and displays a humorous side
"I'm not a psychopath, Anderson. I'm a high–functioning sociopath. Do your research". Secondary characters similar to Sgt Sally Donovan and

Avery was normally good at reading people but she got nothing from the Director other than mistrust and maybe a hint of respect if she was reading

ability to... extract information from any electronic device in her line of sight with her mind. And since her brain is physically different than any
normal human's, super powered humans included, any attempt to penetrate her mind and affect it in anyway is futile. It just simply won't work,"
Professor Xavier said. 'That must have been why Professor Xavier couldn't find me but that doesn't explain how he knows my name', Avery thought
to herself. Any evidence of herself and her existence she made sure to delete years ago, when Avery ran away from the orphanage where she grew
up. Although Avery had never tried to hack into electronic devices mentally before, she would have to test that later. She also wondered how the
Professor figured out she could do that when Avery hadn't even known herself. "Her mind also interprets computer code the same way it does
English, so she can hack into virtually anything that requires coding as long as she's physically using a computer or something of the like. The gist of
it is that Avery's mind works more like a computer than a human brain," he concluded. While the Fury gave her a considering look at the Professor's
explanation Avery froze. "If

Sherlock Holmes Anti Hero Essay
The age of the anti–hero is upon us. Historically, the stories are only told about heroes–Captain America, Superman, etc.–but the anti–hero has been
gaining more traction, more light, in popular culture and social media. Anti–heroes have begun to grace the screens of primetime television or earning
their own series on Netflix. When looking into anti–heroes plenty come to mind: Daredevil, Walter White, Lestat to name a few. But what if a famous
literature character who came back due to popular demand–the kind who saves the day–as an anti–hero? This character is Sherlock Holmes. Steven

This is the addiction and vice of Sherlock Holmes in the modern era–knowledge. And, despite these crippling, underlying and nearly destructive traits,
Sherlock does show promising, good qualities. He cares for Mrs. Hudson, Lestrade, and John Watson and these relationships keep him tethered to
humanity, to the world he's alienated from by his addiction. However, the redemptive qualities offer no salvation for Sherlock Holmes. He sees only his
harmful, anti–hero qualities, rebuking any praise he receives. "Don't make people into heroes, John. Heroes don't exist, and if they did I wouldn't be
one of them" (The Great Game). Sherlock is eternally locked in limbo, damnation, recognizing himself as playing "on the side of angels" but denied a
place amongst their ranks–"Don't think for a second that I am one of them" (Reichenbach Fall). Sherlock, even in the face of absolving traits and
actions that would guarantee even the worst of sinners a place even heaven, sees himself for what he truly is; not an angel with immense wings but
one whose wings were torn from him by his sins as he was cast down,

Blackwood Vs Holmes
ВЁ'You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear." this quote from A Scandal in Bohemia shows that some people do not observe, they just
look at the obvious. All the clues and hint that are in the movies and stories that the villains have left , Watson just looks at everything around him unlike
Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is able to identify who the culprit is throughout the short stories and the films that we watched in class. Both of
these movies, Sherlock Holmes and The Great Mouse Detective, have antagonists that are represented in different ways.
In the movie Sherlock Holmes the villain is named Blackwood and in The Great Mouse Detective the villain is Professor Ratigan. In all of the Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle's stories there is always a villain or a suspect. Blackwood in the film Sherlock Holmes and Professor Ratigan in The Great
Mouse Detective were both out to achieve a similar goal . Both of the characters in these movies have similarities, but both of the characters also have
differences as well. While Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes is a human, Ratigan is a rat in The Great Mouse Detective. The two characters have goals

Agatha was sitting in Queen Vera's parlor trying not to appear apprehensive. She noticed the wonderfully, exquisite, porcelain china that was
strategically placed on the table, and Agatha felt as if the single movement of an elbow or a foot might knock something out of place. While awaiting
her interview with the queen for the position of princess, Agatha studied the many fantastic embellishments of the room. She had decided, having sat
in the parlor for quite some time, that she fancied the d?cor, which was obviously arranged to bear a distinct and direct representation of Franz

What Is The Hound Of The Baskervilles?
"The Hound of the Baskervilles" is the most famous Sherlock Holmes book there is. The author of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle. There are also some important characters in "The Hound of the Baskervilles". Then I will summarize "The Hound of the Baskervilles".
The author of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's full name is Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle. He
lived from May 22, 1859 through July 7, 1930. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a British physician and writer.
There are also some important characters in "The Hound of the Baskervilles". The important characters in "The Hound of the Baskervilles" Sherlock
Holmes, who was thought to be dead for the first part of the book. There is Doctor Watson, who is a Doctor for his career and the literary assistant
/friend of Sherlock Holmes. Another important character is Sir Henry Baskerville, because Dr. Watson is trying to save Sir Henry Baskerville from
being killed by a ghost hound called the Hound of the Baskervilles.
This is my summary of "The Hound of the Baskervilles". Dr. James Mortimer asks Sherlock Holmes to investigate the death of his friend, Sir
Charles Baskerville. Sir Charles died at his Devonshire estate, Baskerville Hall, and Mortimer now fears for Sir Charles's nephew and sole heir, Sir
Henry Baskerville. The death was attributed to a heart attack, but Mortimer is suspicious because Sir Charles died with an expression of horror on
his face and Mortimer noticed "the footprints of a gigantic hound" nearby. The Baskerville family has supposedly been under a curse since the era of
the English Civil War, when Hugo Baskerville offered his soul to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Kat Vs Watson Essay
In most stories the protagonist receives all the glory for their hard work in saving the day or solving the case. The sidekick just fades into the
background receiving no recognition for the work they contributed and let's face it without the help from great sidekicks such as Watson and Kat,
Sherlock and Vic would not have been as successful as they are. These two sidekicks have some similar characteristics that make them so
wonderful for instance Kat and Watson are both clever they think fast on their feet. However, they both get used like a chess piece pawn by the
detectives. Also, Watson and Kat both have abandoned issues and end up living with their counterparts which makes their relationships stronger. Kat
and Watson are extremely clever and think fast on their feet to assist the detectives in any way they can regarding the case they were working on.

Sherlock Holmes Reasoning
"The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes." The world changes and new cases appear every day like in the
novel series of the The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Many readers have been very much interested in Doyle's stories and how he has fabricated
Sherlock's form of reasoning or understanding in cases. These people have created many films depicting Doyle's stories. In some films such as The
Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, the story line is the same as Doyle's original but some names and characters have been changed. In the
films, The Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, the story proceeds the same as a detective solving a seemingly impossible case. In
Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock uses his deductive reasoning to solve a case that has been brought up that no one knows how to solve. The same follows
in The Great Mouse Detective as Basil has a case brought to him about a missing father. The difference between the two though is that Sherlock in
Sherlock Holmes does proceed his cases sometimes with much rudeness or is willing to fight his way, physically, through any of his problems.... Show

In The Great Mouse Detective, Basil of Baker Street is the lead detective that uses the help of an assistant named Dawson to solve a mystery. In
this same way Sherlock in Sherlock Holmes is also a detective that uses the help of an assistant named Watson to solve cases. The difference
however is not the same characters are pulled from the stories. For example, in The Great Mouse Detective the peg legged man makes an
appearance, but in Sherlock Holmes he does not. The opposite is for Irene Adler, she is in Sherlock Holmes, but not The Great Mouse Detective. The
characters in both stories are idealized from the original story of Sherlock Holmes but are made to be different because of the audience the characters

How Does Sherlock Holme Use Deductive Reasoning
Compare/Contrast Essay
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character, Sherlock Holmes, once said "I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to
stock it with such furniture as you choose." This quote can be found in A Study in Scarlet and relates to how Sherlock feels about knowledge.
Sherlock even seems to use this to help him reason and understand the characteristics of people who cross paths with him. Both The Great Mouse
Detective (GMD) and Sherlock Holmes (SH) use characteristics, from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories, but they are depicted and intertwined into
the stories very differently.
In the movies The Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, deductive reasoning is the main tool used to solve cases. Sherlock Holmes, the
lead detective in SH, uses deductive reasoning to decipher how the antagonist pulls off the illusions. Basil of Baker Street, the lead detective in
GMD, uses deductive reasoning in a similar way to figure out the antagonist's evil scheme. While deductive reasoning is used in both films, Sherlock
Holmes seems to use it more uniformly, as opposed to Basil who appears to use deductive reasoning more sporadically. Sherlock also tends to rely less
on others own reasoning, and more on their abilities to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Holmes' precise and accurate conclusions are processed through an intricate and thorough method.
When Conan Doyle introduces a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all Holmes mental abilities we see that Holmes is so involved in
his methods that the slightest emotional change could tip him over to the wrong conclusion.
Holmes' highly tuned and accurate mind is such that if anything dramatically changed, or was altered, it would change the entire outlook upon the crime.
'grit in a sensitive instrument, or crack in one of his high power lenses would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a narrative such as his'
This gives a sense that if anything were to alter, the whole case could be solved, or go terribly wrong.

"The Hound of The Baskervilles" "The Hound of The Baskervilles" by Arthur Conan Doyle is part of the 'Classic Children's Book Collection'. The
book starts out with Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson with a case for Dr.Mortimer about the Baskerville family, and a mysterious death. It is a
mystery trying to find out how Sir Charles was killed. Holmes was unable to go to the case so he sends his assistant Dr.Watson. Watson has to find
out who murdered Sir Charles and protect the new heir. Doyle's novel was placed in the late 1800's so there was not much technology invented yet.
Modern technology would have changed the story because Watson and Holmes could phone each other, set up cameras, and use lie detectors. If
Holmes and Watson used modern technology, they would be able to use phones. When Holmes and Watson received the case, Holmes could not make
it so Watson went alone only delivering letters back and forth. They would have both been able to ask and answer questions quite instantaneously.
Because of not having phones they could have misinterpreted what the other said. Mistakes and blaming the innocent could have happened... Show

The potential murderers for the death of Sir Charles were Barrymore, the butler with many secrets, and Stapleton, the one who chases butterflies.
Also Mr.Frankland, from Lafter Hall with knowledge of history, Seldon, an escaped murderer, and even a demon hound in legends. Many did believe
it was a supernatural hound because they didnt believe someone would get their hands dirty just to kill Sir Charles. The story began and finished in
London at 221b Baker Street. Most of the story, however, took place in Devonshire. Throughout the story, the reader would get subtle hints on how he
got killed, but it is very challenging to stick to one character. Who do you think killed Sir

The Bohemian Scandal
In Conan Doyle's short story "A Scandal in Bohemia" (1888), Sherlock Holmes can tell that the stranger possess great wealth before he speaks a
single word. Sherlock Holmes analyzes everything when it comes to people. He uses their appearance, how they carry themselves, and what kind of
objects they have on them. The author uses descriptive words to describe the way the stranger looked. This essay will prove that Sherlock Holmes is so
observant of everyone, that he can tell who you are before speaking to you. In the short story "A Scandal in Bohemia" Mr. Sherlock Holmes receives a

A man with luxury would have an area where he can get exercise regularly and would be well nourished. Watson describes his clothing as rich but bad
in taste. In many countries being gaudy is a sign of having wealth. It is a way of expressing that they have more money than everyone else. The
stranger has bands of astrakhan on his sleeves. Astrakhan is fur from a young lambs coat. People with money tend to wear fur that no one else can
afford. He was wearing a cloak with flame–coloured silk. Silk is a precious material that only the rich could trade for. His brooch had a single flaming
beryl. A beryl is a gem, and gems were used as jewelry. The beryl was most likely a rare gem because Watson described it as a flaming beryl. It was
intensely passionate to the eye. The boots were trimmed with rich brown fur. Notice that he did not describe the fur as just fur. He stated that it
was a rich brown fur. As stated before, most likely an animal's fur that is rare. The man had his face covered with a black vizard. The man was
trying to hide his identity with a black vizard. Only someone who would be recognized would wear a mask. The man made sure that Holmes could

Superstition On The Face Of Logic By Dr. Mortimer
Theme The most prevalent theme of this book is superstition in the face of logic. Throughout the novel the logician, Sherlock Holmes, is faced with
something quite the opposite of logic: a supernatural hound. The reader can see in many places that the supernatural beliefs of the townsfolk and
neighbours of the Hall swayed the reasoning of those trying to unravel the layers of mystery surrounding the investigation. This intersection of
rational thought and irrational belief is first presented by Dr. Mortimer at the beginning of the novel. Dr. Mortimer' introduction as a "man of
science" sets a tone of intellectuality; Holmes and Mortimer make small talk of his medical practice, Holmes' deductions, and the intricacies of
Holmes' skull structure. This is immediately skewed by the telling of the legend of the hound. The reading of this unworldly myth promptly makes
the atmosphere eerie and mystical. These two undercurrents mix together for the first time in this scene, when Mortimer makes it clear he believes
the supernatural explanation for the crime committed. Another clear indicator of the theme appears in evidence of the hound. There are several
indicators throughout the novel that the there is a real dog in play. However, instead of being interpreted as evidence of a real dog, they are
dismissed as superstition or insignificant by most; it is these pieces of evidence that Holmes uses to determine that the dog is of the corporeal world.
The first piece of evidence set

Speckled Band Conflict
In "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes uses his inquisitive skills to solve a mystery. Along with
Sherlock is his companion, Dr. Watson, who works with Sherlock to protect Helen Stoner from Dr. Roylott. To begin, the story takes place in April,
1883, at the Roylott Stoke Maron Manor. Troubled, Helen Stoner explains her case in vast detail to Sherlock and Dr. Watson. The main conflict of the
story is that Helen feared for her life and was suspicious about Julia's death on the eve of Julia's wedding. After that, Sherlock and Dr. Watson begin
their investigation at the Roylott Stoke Maron Manor.

Sherlock took account of Dr. Roylott's worn down chair, the small saucer of milk in Dr. Roylott's room, the mysterious metal safe, as well as the
bell string in Julia's room. This case was a foul play mystery because the author led the audience to believe a variety of red herrings throughout the
story. Firstly, Helen Stoner suggested that the Gypsies outside had something to do with the death of Julia. Additionally, Helen told Sherlock that
the metal clang she heard could have been the creaking of the timeworn building. Lastly, the fact that Dr. Roylott owned a baboon and a cheetah
had nothing to do with the death of Julia Stoner. The last mood shift of the story is happy because Helen could go in life and marry the man she
desired. Furthermore, the final tone of the story is uplifting because Helen was relieved to be able to live without fear in her life again. Most likely,
Helen would leave her current area to marry her lover in peace. All in all, due to Sherlock, the mystery of Julia's death had been solved and Helen
Stoner would no longer live in fear

Who Is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Adventure Of The Speckled...
Sherlock Holmes was one of the best detectives ever. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote stories about Holmes and his apprentice, Watson. One of these
stories was "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", in it Holmes is tasked with solving the murder mystery of Julia Stoner, Helen Stoner's sister, who
was murdered two years prior. Stoke Moran, the place of the murder, was home to Dr. Roylott, Helen's stepfather. Dr. Roylott was a psychotic
criminal who took interest in exotic, foreign pets. Dr. Roylott made it clear to Holmes that he did not want Sherlock anywhere near Stoke Moran.
Later that same day, Holmes and Watson arranged to meet Helen at Stoke Moran, because Helen feared for her life. During their meeting at Stoke
Moran, Holmes and Watson devised a plan to infiltrate Stoke Moran later that night. While waiting for Helen's signal that it was safe to arrive,
Holmes and Watson stayed at a nearby hotel. Since Holmes was able to construct a plan so quickly, we can confirm that he is indeed a magnificent,
experienced detective. Knowing that Helen fears for her life, Holmes knows she is willing to do anything to insure her safety. Holmes, being an
amazing detective, suspected Dr. Roylott of committing the murder, as he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

marry her fiancГ©. Without the constant fear of being killed, bestowed to her by Dr. Roylott, she will once again be able to live a normal life. Holmes

This passage comes from Sherlock Holmes's article on deduction, the unique process to which he ascribes his success as a detective. He argues that
through the power of deduction, or otherwise the process of using clues and details to explain a hypothesis or argument. This passage shows a flaw in
Holmes's reasoning since the method being described is not that of deduction, but induction; the process of making an argument to explain small clues
or details. Nevertheless, Holme's reasoning shows an important ideal in detective fiction of this era, where mundane objects are clues used to aid the
detective in solving the mystery. The detective is able to observe the ordinary object and pieces of the scene and from there draw a conclusion based ...

important characters, Sherlock Holmes, solved the mysterious case of Julia Stoner's death. This all took place in April of 1883 at the Roylott estate
of Stoke Moran. He would have not succeeded without the aid of Dr. Watson, Holmes partner in crime and Helen Stoner, the twin sister of Julia. The
investigation began when Helen visited Holmes to unravel the unexpected death of Julia Stoner, which had occurred close to her wedding day. Helen
feared odd phases have been happening to her, now that she is engaged. Referring to these suspicious thoughts, eyes are on Dr. Roylott, the stepfather
of the two twins. When Helen arrived to see Sherlock Holmes, she appeared to be awfully anxious. She slowly sat down and asked Holmes to solve

fright of something terrible happening to her. She told Sherlock that she's been hearing whistling noises at night, but occurred when she was engaged to

Shelmes And Watson Comparison
The stories of Sherlock Holmes provide us with two fictional characters that are virtually polar opposites: Holmes and Watson. Holmes is the
observant, deceptive, know–it–all detective, and Watson is his somewhat unobservant, quiet, and intelligent assistant. Many may discover that one of
the two are somewhat relatable. In my case, that relatable character would be Watson. Therefore, my personality and actions are more similar to
Watson's than they are to Holmes's. I am more like Watson considering as I am a loyal companion, I have emotions, and I accept that I do not know
everything. One way that I am similar to Watson is that I have been a loyal comrade to several people. The prime example of this would be his

This reveals that Watson has been absorbed in his marriage, which is an union full of emotion and care, while Holmes does drugs and sits in his

school early to visit my father and grandmother (at different times) when they were in the hospital. Their lives are more important. To put family
over profession is to put love over greed, and I believe that I do that well. Watson, like me, does not become upset when reminded that there are
many concepts that he does not know or observe. He is reminded of this by Holmes in The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle. "'I can see nothing,' said
I, handing it back to my friend. 'On the contrary, Watson, you can see everything. You fail, however, to reason from what you see. You are too timid in
drawing inferences.' 'Then pray, tell me, what is it that you can infer from this hat?" (Doyle 2).This shows Watson being reminded that he is not
all–knowing and not lashing out. He takes it, knowing it is true. Although I am a terrible perfectionist, I understand that I am far from perfect and
all–knowing. I, too, am well aware of my own ignorance and the ignorance of humankind

How Did Sherlock Holmes Get From The Show
Sherlock Holmes was overall a decent show. It was not very exciting. It did not take long to figure out who the killer was, he appeared too soon.
And the best part, trying to figure out who or why. Benedict Cumberbatch made a good Sherlock Holmes. He talked and acted just like a detective.
He came off as smart and determined. He made for a good Sherlock. I thought that Martin Freeman was alright. He was not really a whole lot of help,
but him and Sherlock worked well together. They balanced out each other's personalities. It was also confusing about Dr. Watson's cane. Did he really
need it? Was he faking it? That part was confusing. But overall the show was decent.
The plot of Sherlock Holmes was figuring out the murders. Sherlock and Watson worked together to figure out who the murderer was and why he
was doing the murders. There were 4 murders that happened by the victims having to choose a pill. One being bad, one being good and if they did
not wanna choose, they were held at gunpoint. Sherlock, with how smart he is, was able to figure it out pretty quickly and was able to find out the
murderer and stall him in a room till help came. Sherlock Holmes had a lot of characteristics and two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

personalities were both different. He seemed nicer in the story. He did not downgrade anyone or have hostility towards anyone or their ideas. In the

else than his own mind and the science of deduction. I absolutely love BBC modern take (has started watching lots of episodes), one of the main
reasons is that they include a humorous. They include some smaller jokes here and there, which I believe was a right decision. In the book there are

The passage, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", Sir Arthur Conan Doyle mentioned Sherlock Holmes as a detective, solving a mysterious, yet

There are a string of dynamic duos that fight crime throughout history, from Batman and Robin to Starsky and Hutch, and somewhere along the list
is the pairing of Sherlock Holmes and Watson and there is no doubt that this pairing is an interesting one. They seem like such opposites but that is a
big factor in why they work so well together. It works because it embodies the old time saying: "opposites attract". Sherlock is this detective genius
that does not feel things or really understand the people around him so he has Watson to fall back on. In a way they teach each other. Holmes helps

means that the risk of the stories fading out and never being remembered is a very real possibility. On the other side of the coin, if everything was
only seen and told from Watson's point of view there would not be a very mysterious element about it. For example, when he is staying with Sir
Henry at the moor the story seems to drag because he only notices the obvious things that seem to be odd. If this was all the story had to offer the

In the story Adventures of the Cardboard Box, I chose Dr. John H. Watson to do a character analysis. Dr. Watson provides a foil and minor character
to compare to his partner Holmes. Watson's simplistic role often minimizes him to being a plot device to move the plot along. Watson's narration

Similarities And Differences Between Sherlock And Watson

  • 1. Similarities And Differences Between Sherlock And Watson Sherlock Holmes and Watson the most iconic duo from a novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that have been reimagined many times over the years. Watson and Sherlock are both well rounded characters with large differences that depend on each other in their quests to solve many murder mysteries. Dr. Watson the narrator for sherlock stories is a calm down to earth military doctor who works with Sherlock throughout his investigations his character is dependent on Sherlock for many reasons. In the live action television series Sherlock they made John Watson's dependence on sherlock very apparent. Watson's therapist thinks he's traumatized from his war in afghanistan after getting shot in the leg. Watson instead very excitedly follows... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This builds their friendship since watson is the only person to not treat Sherlock like a freak. Watson will often save Sherlock from dangers he put himself into. In the live action television series Sherlock willingly got in the cab with the murderer and almost took the poison out of desperation to outsmart the murder. If watson didn't follow them and kill the murder he could have most likely died. We will never really know if Sherlock was in control of that situation but watson showed up in time to make sure nothing bad happened to Sherlock and got more clues off the murderer. Sherlock has Watson move in for a reason and it is obviously to help Sherlock where he is weak. With watson being more humane than sherlock he can provide a different perspective for cases and clues that sherlock can not easily see. In the television series sherlock, Sherlock and Watson were inspecting a shoe left at a crime scene, Sherlock asked Watson of his opinion about the shoe Watson can only say it has been used, and the size was large, therefore it belongs to a male. Sherlock then commented on Watson's observation skills "An outside eye, a second opinion. It's very useful to me.". To Sherlock Watson was like and external piece of his mind helping him think up the rest he could not. Watson works as a counterbalance, softening out the hard edges of Holmes' complex personality. in The Hounds of Baskerville 'some people see the light, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. How To Write An Essay On The Hound Of The Baskervilles The Hound of the Baskervilles On March 25, 1902, publisher George Newnes first issued Sir Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles, an exhilarating novel filled with mystery, romance, and incessant suspense. As Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson discussed the origin of a strange walking stick that a stranger left at their door, the owner of the stick, Doctor James Mortimer, knocked on their door and told the dynamic duo his strange story of the Baskerville family's horrifying curse. His story told of a man named Sir Charles Baskerville (the next heir), who recently came to claim the Baskerville estate and had died from a heart attack a few months after living on the estate in the moors of Devonshire. Upon the Doctor's examination of both the body and the crime scene, Dr. Mortimer found footprints of a large beast a distance away from the victim. In reference to this monstrous beast, he states, "I find that before the terrible event occurred several people had seen a creature upon the moor which corresponds with this Baskerville demon, and which could not possibly be any animal known to science. They all agreed that it was a huge creature, luminous, ghastly, and spectral" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sherlock Holmes sent Dr. Watson to accompany Sir Henry Baskerville to his estate to investigate the case and keep Sir Henry safe from any potential danger. By living with Sir Henry and acting as his protector, Watson and Sir Henry became friends. When Sir Henry travel alone in the moor, Watson always accompanied him, even when he sometimes felt uncomfortable doing so. Sir Henry openly shared his concerns and his feelings toward Ms. Stapleton with Dr. Watson, and Dr. Watson listened and responded to him. Sharing feelings and concerns demonstrates that friends must be honest and open toward one another and always be ready to listen or give ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Queenie Volupedis Murder We believe Queenie Volupedis staged an accident to cover up for her murder. We arrived at the Volupedis home at 1:30 AM to find Queenie standing with a shocked face in front of her dead husband lying at the bottom of the stairs, glass still in hand. Food was cooking on the stove when we arrived, and everything besides Queenie's husband was still intact. Queenie reported Arthur slipped and fell down the stairs. The autopsy reported Arthur died from a head wound and had been intoxicated. To begin with, Queenie still had a shocked face when the investigating team arrived, even after speaking to her friends and staying that way for 30 minutes. As a rule, people do not go back into shock after coming out of shock. This shows that Queenie had tried ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Tale Of Two Cities Chapter 3 Essay The following extract from chapter three is an example of how the supernatural and the scientific are continuously contrasting in the novel: 'In your opinion there is a diabolical agency which makes Dartmoor an unsafe abode for a Baskerville–that is your opinion?' 'At least I might go the length of saying that there is some evidence that this may be so.' 'Exactly. But surely, if your supernatural theory be correct, it could work the young man evil in London as easily as in Devonshire. A devil... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this part, he shows incredulity and thinks that such thing must be the work of something supernatural. Watson's comparison of Holmes and the people living in the Dartmoor enhances again this contrast between the city detective who appeals more to science and the superstitious servants that give paranormal meanings to the howl of a dog. A contradiction with Watson's ideas can also be seen in this extract. He first claims to have common sense and that is what makes him deny the existence of the hound, but then after reflecting on what he had heard, he justifies this saying that 'facts are facts' and this generates doubts and confusion in his mind. It is important to notice how Doyle develops a mysterious and frightening scene in our minds the moment we imagine how terrifying must be to hear such sound that even Watson, another man of science, starts to doubt about the existence of this enigmatic and evil ... • 5. To Kill A Mockingbird Summary Chapter 14 In chapter five Holmes and watson go to sir henry's hotel, holmes thinks that the other people at the hotel can be connected to the man watching him because the man watching him is keeping his distance when they get to his room sir henry is angry because someone stoles an old black boot leaving one brown one and one black one. He apologizes for getting angry over something so small but the boots mean a lot more to holmes than the rest of them. Holmes ask sir henry if he knows anyone with a black beard and that matches the description of a butler at the manner that's receiving money from sir charles will. Dr. Mortimer also admits to receiving money from sir charles will, but the rest of his 740000 pounds is going to sire henry. They all agree that that much money is good motive. If sir henry were to die the next in line is a cousin named james desmond... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When dr m and sir henry get the the train station holmes tells sir henry it's not safe for him to be by himself, they take the train to devonshire. • 6. Analysis Of Sherlock Holmes In The Hound Of Baskervilles Throughout The Hound of Baskervilles, Holmes is very detailed and factual with his information that comes across to him. Holmes is a great investigator in this novel, and is really motivated to find the clues and evidence to conclude the case with Watson. With Holmes being a big role in this novel, it gives the reader what all to look for being small details and obvious details. The usage of deduction is very well informed, especially by Sherlock Holmes giving him the ability to solve this mystery. I choose to write about Holmes and the way he uses deduction, and how important his quotes and solutions are to solving the mystery. At the beginning of the novel we found out very quickly how good Holmes is at judging clues. Holmes and Watson never seeing the walking stick that was left outside the house Holmes concluded lots from it. Holmes showed that the owner of the walking stick had a spaniel, and walked a lot using the stick. These observations Holmes discovered set a tremendous tone early at the novel showing how the little things are just as needed as the big ones in investigating. Two quotes from the book that really fall into Holmes judging clues are "presume nothing", and "the world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observe". These two quotes both tell not to look over things that are right in front of you, because sometimes the small things could answer your solution to problems. Holmes' quotes show the reader how intelligent he is, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Dr. Watson In the episode, A Study in Pink from the television show Sherlock one of the main secondary characters are Dr. John Watson. Dr. Watson unlike most of the other characters actually shows his appreciation for Sherlock Holmes brilliant findings. He complements Holmes on how he pays close attention to the markings on his cellular phone that gave evidence that the previous owner had a drinking problem. Dr. John Watson said, "How can you possibly know about the drinking?" Sherlock Holmes then responds by saying "Shot in the dark. Good one, though. Power connection – tiny little scuff marks around the edge. Every night he goes to plug it in and charge but his hands are shaky. He's not paid or anything. He likes it. He gets off on it. The weirder the crime, the more he gets off. And you know what?... One day just showing up won't be enough. One day we'll be standing around a body, andSherlock Holmes will be the one that put it there" when Watson questions her about her statement she responds by calling him a psychopath "Because he's a psychopath... Psychopaths get bored". Anderson is another character who can be seen as questioning the mental state of the protagonist or to cause the viewer doubt about how smart and clever Sherlock is such as in the scene when the team raids Holmes flat and finds the lady in pink's case that was missing Anderson says" We found the case. According to "someone", the murderer has the case, and we found it in the hands of our favorite psychopath". However, Sherlock Holmes responds in a witty fashion ensuring the viewers and Watson of his cleverness and displays a humorous side "I'm not a psychopath, Anderson. I'm a high–functioning sociopath. Do your research". Secondary characters similar to Sgt Sally Donovan and Anderson help bring the main character to life, adds more depth and dimension to the character to make him more relatable or ... • 8. Short Story "So you're the infamous Cipher who managed to hack into Shield's database," the man with the eye patch and long black coat said – Avery immediately recognized who was standing on the doorstep. "That's an interesting code name but then again if the shoe fits..." she replied. "I know who you both are of course, Director, Professor," Avery continued, nodding to them respectively, hiding her surprise with a self satisfied smirk. Now, Avery was normally good at reading people but she got nothing from the Director other than mistrust and maybe a hint of respect if she was reading him right. But she wasn't surprised with him being a super spy and all. "Yes, well you have been quite a thorn in the side for Shield, trying to figure who you are,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There was no way Fury could know about her mutant powers when she had never breathed a word about them to anyone. But somehow and some way, he did. "She is Cybernetic – a phrase we invented because of her, for I have honestly never seen anything quite like this before. Avery here has the ability to... extract information from any electronic device in her line of sight with her mind. And since her brain is physically different than any normal human's, super powered humans included, any attempt to penetrate her mind and affect it in anyway is futile. It just simply won't work," Professor Xavier said. 'That must have been why Professor Xavier couldn't find me but that doesn't explain how he knows my name', Avery thought to herself. Any evidence of herself and her existence she made sure to delete years ago, when Avery ran away from the orphanage where she grew up. Although Avery had never tried to hack into electronic devices mentally before, she would have to test that later. She also wondered how the Professor figured out she could do that when Avery hadn't even known herself. "Her mind also interprets computer code the same way it does English, so she can hack into virtually anything that requires coding as long as she's physically using a computer or something of the like. The gist of it is that Avery's mind works more like a computer than a human brain," he concluded. While the Fury gave her a considering look at the Professor's explanation Avery froze. "If ... • 9. Sherlock Holmes Anti Hero Essay The age of the anti–hero is upon us. Historically, the stories are only told about heroes–Captain America, Superman, etc.–but the anti–hero has been gaining more traction, more light, in popular culture and social media. Anti–heroes have begun to grace the screens of primetime television or earning their own series on Netflix. When looking into anti–heroes plenty come to mind: Daredevil, Walter White, Lestat to name a few. But what if a famous literature character who came back due to popular demand–the kind who saves the day–as an anti–hero? This character is Sherlock Holmes. Steven Moffat brought the famous detective back from the dead for a modern twist. Sherlock became the sociopath, the drug addict, the man with no morals, the man without ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the addiction and vice of Sherlock Holmes in the modern era–knowledge. And, despite these crippling, underlying and nearly destructive traits, Sherlock does show promising, good qualities. He cares for Mrs. Hudson, Lestrade, and John Watson and these relationships keep him tethered to humanity, to the world he's alienated from by his addiction. However, the redemptive qualities offer no salvation for Sherlock Holmes. He sees only his harmful, anti–hero qualities, rebuking any praise he receives. "Don't make people into heroes, John. Heroes don't exist, and if they did I wouldn't be one of them" (The Great Game). Sherlock is eternally locked in limbo, damnation, recognizing himself as playing "on the side of angels" but denied a place amongst their ranks–"Don't think for a second that I am one of them" (Reichenbach Fall). Sherlock, even in the face of absolving traits and actions that would guarantee even the worst of sinners a place even heaven, sees himself for what he truly is; not an angel with immense wings but one whose wings were torn from him by his sins as he was cast down, ... • 10. Blackwood Vs Holmes ВЁ'You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear." this quote from A Scandal in Bohemia shows that some people do not observe, they just look at the obvious. All the clues and hint that are in the movies and stories that the villains have left , Watson just looks at everything around him unlike Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is able to identify who the culprit is throughout the short stories and the films that we watched in class. Both of these movies, Sherlock Holmes and The Great Mouse Detective, have antagonists that are represented in different ways. In the movie Sherlock Holmes the villain is named Blackwood and in The Great Mouse Detective the villain is Professor Ratigan. In all of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories there is always a villain or a suspect. The world changes and new cases appear every day like in the novel series of the The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Many readers have been very much interested in Doyle's stories and how he has fabricated Sherlock's form of reasoning or understanding in cases. These people have created many films depicting Doyle's stories. In some films such as The Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, the story line is the same as Doyle's original but some names and characters have been changed. In the films, The Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, the story proceeds the same as a detective solving a seemingly impossible case. In Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock uses his deductive reasoning to solve a case that has been brought up that no one knows how to solve. The same follows in The Great Mouse Detective as Basil has a case brought to him about a missing father. The difference between the two though is that Sherlock in Sherlock Holmes does proceed his cases sometimes with much rudeness or is willing to fight his way, physically, through any of his problems.... How Does Sherlock Holme Use Deductive Reasoning Compare/Contrast Essay Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character, Sherlock Holmes, once said "I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose." This quote can be found in A Study in Scarlet and relates to how Sherlock feels about knowledge. Sherlock even seems to use this to help him reason and understand the characteristics of people who cross paths with him. Both The Great Mouse Detective (GMD) and Sherlock Holmes (SH) use characteristics, from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short stories, but they are depicted and intertwined into the stories very differently. In the movies The Great Mouse Detective and Sherlock Holmes, deductive reasoning is the main tool used to solve cases. Sherlock Holmes, the lead detective in SH, uses deductive reasoning to decipher how the antagonist pulls off the illusions. Basil of Baker Street, the lead detective in GMD, uses deductive reasoning in a similar way to figure out the antagonist's evil scheme. While deductive reasoning is used in both films, Sherlock Holmes seems to use it more uniformly, as opposed to Basil who appears to use deductive reasoning more sporadically. Throughout the novel the logician, Sherlock Holmes, is faced with something quite the opposite of logic: a supernatural hound. The reader can see in many places that the supernatural beliefs of the townsfolk and neighbours of the Hall swayed the reasoning of those trying to unravel the layers of mystery surrounding the investigation. This intersection of rational thought and irrational belief is first presented by Dr. Mortimer at the beginning of the novel. Dr. Mortimer' introduction as a "man of science" sets a tone of intellectuality; Holmes and Mortimer make small talk of his medical practice, Holmes' deductions, and the intricacies of Holmes' skull structure. This is immediately skewed by the telling of the legend of the hound. The reading of this unworldly myth promptly makes the atmosphere eerie and mystical. These two undercurrents mix together for the first time in this scene, when Mortimer makes it clear he believes the supernatural explanation for the crime committed. Another clear indicator of the theme appears in evidence of the hound. There are several indicators throughout the novel that the there is a real dog in play. She told Sherlock that she's been hearing whistling noises at night, but occurred when she was engaged to marry her fiancГ©, just as her sister had mentioned. She suspected that her greedy stepfather, Dr. Roylott, had to do something with it. Throughout the whole conversation, Holmes was serious about this situation and agreed to investigate, including with Dr. Watson, a medical doctor compassionate for his career. The ... • 33. Shelmes And Watson Comparison The stories of Sherlock Holmes provide us with two fictional characters that are virtually polar opposites: Holmes and Watson. Holmes is the observant, deceptive, know–it–all detective, and Watson is his somewhat unobservant, quiet, and intelligent assistant. Many may discover that one of the two are somewhat relatable. In my case, that relatable character would be Watson. Therefore, my personality and actions are more similar to Watson's than they are to Holmes's. I am more like Watson considering as I am a loyal companion, I have emotions, and I accept that I do not know everything. One way that I am similar to Watson is that I have been a loyal comrade to several people. The prime example of this would be his submissive actions in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This reveals that Watson has been absorbed in his marriage, which is an union full of emotion and care, while Holmes does drugs and sits in his office chasing down criminals. I myself am rather sensitive and feel many different emotions. I also put people before profession when I left school early to visit my father and grandmother (at different times) when they were in the hospital. Their lives are more important. To put family over profession is to put love over greed, and I believe that I do that well. Watson, like me, does not become upset when reminded that there are many concepts that he does not know or observe. He is reminded of this by Holmes in The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle. "'I can see nothing,' said I, handing it back to my friend. 'On the contrary, Watson, you can see everything. You fail, however, to reason from what you see. You are too timid in drawing inferences.' 'Then pray, tell me, what is it that you can infer from this hat?" (Doyle 2).This shows Watson being reminded that he is not all–knowing and not lashing out. He takes it, knowing it is true. Although I am a terrible perfectionist, I understand that I am far from perfect and all–knowing. I, too, am well aware of my own ignorance and the ignorance of humankind ... • 34. How Did Sherlock Holmes Get From The Show Sherlock Holmes was overall a decent show. He was not really a whole lot of help, but him and Sherlock worked well together. They balanced out each other's personalities. It was also confusing about Dr. Watson's cane. Did he really need it? Was he faking it? That part was confusing. But overall the show was decent. The plot of Sherlock Holmes was figuring out the murders. Sherlock and Watson worked together to figure out who the murderer was and why he was doing the murders. There were 4 murders that happened by the victims having to choose a pill. One being bad, one being good and if they did not wanna choose, they were held at gunpoint. Sherlock, with how smart he is, was able to figure it out pretty quickly and was able to find out the murderer and stall him in a room till help came. He seemed nicer in the story. He did not downgrade anyone or have hostility towards anyone or their ideas. In the story, he seemed more open and caring. He was a nice to everyone. Instead of just saying that he bought a sword he needs to say that he is good with the sword. You can clearly tell that Watson is admiring and being jealous of what Sherlock has a capacity of. Watson even has a list of stuff that Sherlock is good at. "....7. Chemistry.–– Profound. 8. Anatomy.–– Accurate, but unsystematic. 9. Sensational Literature. –– Immense. He appears to know every detail of every horror perpetrated in the century. 10. Plays the violin well. 11. Is an expert singlestick player, boxer, and swordsman. 12. One of those is that Holmes uses mobile phones to solve crimes. For example, in the first episode he uses his phone to look up in which areas where it rained the last few hours, he uses this information to know where she has come from. In the original book he has never relied on anything else than his own mind and the science of deduction. I absolutely love BBC modern take (has started watching lots of episodes), one of the main reasons is that they include a humorous. They include some smaller jokes here and there, which I believe was a right decision. In the book there are barely any jokes at all if I can remember. Essay: The Adventure Of The Speckled Band "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" Essay The passage, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", Sir Arthur Conan Doyle mentioned Sherlock Holmes as a detective, solving a mysterious, yet engaging case. Sherlock Holmes had multiple people involved in this investigation, including, Dr. Watson, himself, Dr. Roylott, and importantly Helen Stoner. In April of 1883, Helen Stoner sought the assistance ofSherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson after the circumstances surrounding her dual sister, Julia's, death stand to put her life in a crisis. Although Helen was frightened, she was undeniably thorough with the information she conveyed to Sherlock Holmes. Helen was extremely anxious to know what happened to her sister the night she died. Sherlock noted the most bizarre fact was how the ventilator was between rooms; the false bell pull was near the ventilator, and it hung over the bolted bed in which Julia Stoner slept. When the signal appeared in Helen's window, Sherlock and Dr. Watson had little difficulty making their way to the house; however, they had a near brush with a baboon from the strange collection of Indian animal Dr. Roylott possessed. Once inside, they made their way to Helen's chambers and prepared to let the events of the night unfold. After hours of waiting there was a brief light from the ventilator and the smell of burning oil and heated metal. A whistle sounds became apparent and, as Sherlock reacted with an instant of light and jolt from his chair, he struck the bell pull with his cane. A terrified hoarse scream came from Dr. Roylott's room. Sherlock and Dr. Watson went to the chambers only to find Dr. Roylott had a speckled band, a swamp adder, was about his head and was dead. Sherlock explained his findings to Helen. Dr. Roylott's arrogance of trying to keep Helen from receiving her inheritance and getting married was dissolved by his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He was defending his own life, he could not have possibly known exactly where Dr.Roylott was, and lastly, Dr.Roylott knew the severities of owning a vicious, lethal swamp adder; he should have been more careful. Sherlock had to act swiftly in order to save his own life from a threatening serpent; he had no choice but to try to frighten it off back to where it slithered from, thus killing Dr.Roylott in the process. Sherlock has evidence to prove his innocence due to the fact that he was clearly protecting his own existence; he was not about to wait around for a highly lethal cold–blooded killer to feast upon him. The frightened detective recused his own fate by instinctively pushed the snake harshly away from his space in order to prevent a disastrous outcome. • 39. Holmes And Watson Research Paper There are a string of dynamic duos that fight crime throughout history, from Batman and Robin to Starsky and Hutch, and somewhere along the list is the pairing of Sherlock Holmes and Watson and there is no doubt that this pairing is an interesting one. They seem like such opposites but that is a big factor in why they work so well together. It works because it embodies the old time saying: "opposites attract". Sherlock is this detective genius that does not feel things or really understand the people around him so he has Watson to fall back on. In a way they teach each other. Holmes helps Watson become a better detective while Watson teaches Holmes how to interact with the outside world. It is said that this pairing was one of Doyle's greatest... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It would only take a few pages for the brilliant Sherlock Holmes to solve the mystery and tell his readers his decision. Also with the way he speaks and his mannerisms most people might not even be able to translate Holmes's language into something the everyday populous can understand. This means that the risk of the stories fading out and never being remembered is a very real possibility. On the other side of the coin, if everything was only seen and told from Watson's point of view there would not be a very mysterious element about it. For example, when he is staying with Sir Henry at the moor the story seems to drag because he only notices the obvious things that seem to be odd. If this was all the story had to offer the audience might dislike Watson just as much as they would a solo Holmes. Some things that work well together do not work very well apart. • 40. John H. Watson Foil In the story Adventures of the Cardboard Box, I chose Dr. John H. Watson to do a character analysis. Dr. Watson provides a foil and minor character to compare to his partner Holmes. Watson's simplistic role often minimizes him to being a plot device to move the plot along. Watson's narration through out the series is constantly building up Holmes's glamor at the expense of his own. Dr. Watson provides a foil for Holmes' character.
