Learning Value of Visual Arts
This paper will present my point of view on the learning value of the visual arts using Gardner's
Multiple Intelligences, Piaget's Constructivism and Vygotsky's Social Learning Theory.
Art as mere creative expression has been the dominant theme for much of the twentieth century.
However, researchers have been finding connections between learning in the visual arts and the
acquisition of knowledge and skills in other areas. Art like text can be used as a source to practice
critical thinking. Art can also be used to teach children about culture, traditions, history and even

They also later could solve problems by controlling their bodily motions and handle objects skilfully
using both fine motor movements of fingers and hands and gross motor movements of the body
(Wright, 2003). Art making activities also supports Piaget's age and stage theory of children's
development especially when they start to experience the world through their senses and they start
acquiring motor skills.
Toddlers develop control of large and small muscle groups through making art. Painting with
brushes, crayons, kneading clay or cutting and tearing paper help them develop co–ordination and
strength in their arms and fingers. This will help them gain confidence in using tools for making art
and later for writing. Making art also helps children develop eye–hand co–ordination. As children
decide how to make parts fit together into a whole, where to place objects, and what details to
include, they learn to coordinate what they see with the movements of their hands and fingers. This
eye–hand coordination is essential for many activities, including forming letters and spacing words
in formal writing.

M3 Learning Styles
There are three main learning styles which are Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic. The three of these
are different ways of how you prefer to learn, and how you consume information efficiently.
Visual Learning
This style uses images, pictures, colours and maps to let the learner see, so they are able to consume
the information and communicate with other people. You able to visualize objects and the outcomes
in your mind's eye. The learner has a good spatial sense, which enables you to have a good sense of
direction. This means that you can easily find your way around maps and hardly get lost. If you're a
visual learner then you use other visual media to help to learn. This will allow you to make your
visualizations stand out more and make sure that new material among others are able to float inside
your head.
The main characteristics of a visual learner are that they remember what they see, instead of what
they hear. They also prefer diagrams, pictures and to read and write rather than listening. This
learner is usually good at spelling, but forgets names, and needs to study in quite. Also, they would
tune out when they try to pay attention and they would need an overall new and purpose beginning a
project.
Auditory Learning
This style involves the learner to consume information through listening. They depend on hearing

My learning style is a visual learner. I am able to comprehend and work to the best of my ability
when I am able to see the problem and the work written to solve it. Seeing/taking detailed notes is
easier for me to learn a lesson than listening to a discussion because I can see the work and word
terms without worrying about forgetting them. I learn best as a visual learner because I am able to
see all the steps to solve a problem and I am able to figure out where I might need to fix a mistake.
During math class in eighth grade, I was able to completely understand a lesson that I considered

A successful reader is someone who is able to determine the differences between their letters and
location of how the letters are placed together. For example, the ability required for being able to
recognize if a letter is a 'p', 'q', 'b' or 'd'. When a student is learning to read, and if they are unable to
see the differences between the letter "b" from the letter "p," they will incorrectly read the word
"bat" as "pat." This stumbling block may allow insecurities to creep in while they are beginning
readers. When learning mathematics, students need to be able to differentiate between the symbols
used for numbers. Such numbers as '2' and '5' or '6' and '9', have significant differences. Children
may be able to give the answer orally for "What is five plus three", but if they see it on a worksheet,
they may not be able to complete the task correctly. This is because they are not able to distinguish
between different symbols. Some students may also struggle with multiple numbers given at a time
and needing to see them in a certain order as well as read them in the correct order. One example is
27 and 72. Transposing numbers may be an issue with visual discrimination, or something more

I have discovered some interesting things I have noticed in myself before taking this course. For
example, my learning style I have noticed is the visual learning style.
With this, I prefer to see and read information to full gain comprehension. If I forget the data, or not
clearly understand it the first time read, I have the option of reading it over. I do not always trust
myself to absorb all information the first time around. I take a lot of notes to look at. Notes help me
remember even though I may not read the again, I can refer to them in my mind after writing them
down. I am not sure if just anyone reading them would get anything out of it, but at least I know
what they mean.
I like to take my time with material, but am not always given the allotted time to do so. I also like to
keep a written list of things to do to refer to. I am comfortable with my learning style, accepted it as
my very own. I am not sure if changing it this late in life is such a good idea. I have got by this far, it
must work out for me.
I have identified my personality style as being extroverted, one who becomes easily energized by
others, and outwardly expressing thoughts as long as I am fully understanding context and material

Learning styles is a term used to refer to the methods of gathering, processing, interpreting,
organizing, and thinking about information. (Marcy, 2001) In 1987 Dr. Neil D. Fleming, an educator

evaluate any changes needed to this writers' study habits.

After taking the VARK questionnaire this writer had the following results: Visual–1, Aural–3,
Read/write–6, Kinesthetic–6. The highest score is equal between read/write and kinesthetic followed

Visual learners are those who learn things best through seeing them. Visual learners often prefer to
sit in the front of the class and watch the lecture closely, because in this manner they see visual
clearly so they understand and remember lessons.
Visual aids such as maps, graph, pictures and colorful outline are the effective tools that can be used
by teacher to accommodate students that are visual learners. Often, these students will find that
confusing information makes more sense when it is explained with the aid of a chart or picture.
These types of learners learn best with visual aid when studying, like a colorful outline of test
materials, he or she may retain more information. For this type of learner, visual tools improve the
ability to recall information more completely; these tools have a big impact to a visual learner. (G

There are various learning techniques such as visual, hearing, and hands on. We all have a specific
niche that suits us best. As an enrolled student, I believe it is of great significance to find which
strategy we can benefit from the most. I want to walk away from a course knowing I gained the
knowledge I need to suffice in life. I have begun to realize this is not a step that happens overnight. I
have both strengths and weaknesses in all three categories. Though, I can retain the most

Although I have had the opportunity to learn in a variety of setting, I believe that my most efficient
way of learning and retaining material is through the auditory, visual and tactile learning experience.
As I reviewed my list of things I have learned I reflect on my time in nursing school. Therefore, I
will use nursing school to display my preferred styles of learning.
I have never had great study habits but always managed to earn good grades. In grade school I
would find it difficult to concentrate while reading a book. My study habits included retyping hand
written notes and creating flash cards. Unfortunately, I would become bored by my efforts and resort
to a cramming session. After graduating from high school I attended a local community college to
purse my nursing degree. I quickly realized that my old study methods would not aid me in my
quest to become nurse. As part of my nursing curriculum I participated in an eight hour class session
which entailed two lectures section both totaling four hours each. I was assigned an A.M. and P.M.
instructor to cover my theory and practical learning. During instruction time with the A.M. teacher
she would sit in a tall high back chair in front of the class with a large medical book. She would
began her lecture by reading the highlighted definition within the chapter. Majority of the lecture
time was spent flipping pages and reciting different passage from the medical book. Often times I

Learning Value of Visual Arts -Ece Learning Value of Visual Arts This paper will present my point of view on the learning value of the visual arts using Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, Piaget's Constructivism and Vygotsky's Social Learning Theory. Art as mere creative expression has been the dominant theme for much of the twentieth century. However, researchers have been finding connections between learning in the visual arts and the acquisition of knowledge and skills in other areas. Art like text can be used as a source to practice critical thinking. Art can also be used to teach children about culture, traditions, history and even social issues. They also later could solve problems by controlling their bodily motions and handle objects skilfully using both fine motor movements of fingers and hands and gross motor movements of the body (Wright, 2003). Art making activities also supports Piaget's age and stage theory of children's development especially when they start to experience the world through their senses and they start acquiring motor skills. Toddlers develop control of large and small muscle groups through making art. Painting with brushes, crayons, kneading clay or cutting and tearing paper help them develop co–ordination and strength in their arms and fingers. This will help them gain confidence in using tools for making art and later for writing. Making art also helps children develop eye–hand co–ordination. As children decide how to make parts fit together into a whole, where to place objects, and what details to include, they learn to coordinate what they see with the movements of their hands and fingers.
