PART A: INTRODUCTION
1. Rationale
Language is facility to commute information and help us understand each other better.
As globalization and population movements are increasing, different cultures inevitably
come into more contact with each other resulting in growing numbers of multicultural
societies (Hamers & Blanc, 2000). These mixed communities lead to multilingual families
and children who identify themselves with more than one culture and in many instances use
different languages for each parent; that is they become bilingual. Skutnabb-Kangas and
McCarty (2008) maintain that a bilingual possesses “proficiency in and use of two or more
languages by an individual; the term does not always imply an equally high level of
proficiency in all the relevant languages” (p. 2). Although there appear to be various
definitions of the concept, the one given by Skutnabb – Kangass and McCarty will be
applied here in instances where
Speaking two languages instead of just one has many clear and pratical benefits in
increasingly globalized world. However, in the recent years, scientists have begun to poin
out that the benefit of bilingualism are even more important than the ability to communicate
with many people. Using bilingualism makes us smarter. Bilingualism can profoundly affect
the brain, improve non-linguistic cognitive skills, and even protect against dementia in old
age.

CHAPTER 1: DEFINITION
Concepts of Bilingualism:
Bilingualism is the use of two languages in everyday life, either by an
individual speaker or by a community of speakers. Bilingualism is common and is
on the rise in many parts of the world, with perhaps one in three people being
bilingual or multilingual.[2] Bilingualism is the ability of an individual or the
members of a community to use two languages effectively" by Richard Nordquist .
Role of Bilingualism:
Nowadays, Globalization has long been a feature of life. Speaking and using two
languages is an advantage in developing oneself, you can find many opportunities in
studying, working in the global community. Knowing many languages will give you the
opportunities to access rich sources of knowledge from famous authors and scientists
around the world in different fields.
Knowing 2 languages, it does make your brain more healthy, complex and
actively engaged, and even if you didn't have the good fortune of learning a second
language as a child, it's never too late to do yourself a favor and make the linguistic leap
from, "Hello," to, "Hola," "Bonjour" or "你好’s" because when it comes to our brains a little
exercise can go a long way.

Adzuna claims that Japanese and Chinese
are the most lucrative tongues for jobseekers
in the United Kingdom, with Japanese
ranking as the top-paying language for the
year at an average salary of £32,355. Both
languages saw average salaries rise by more
than 15% compared with 2016 levels.

expansion, communication skills are

“A second language is important due to the

business director at the recruitment agency
Hays Japan.
But learning a language is a significant
undertaking. When it comes to Japanese,
just understanding the three independent
writing systems—kanji, hiragana and
katakana—is challenge enough, even before
learning to read and write at a level that is
sufficient for business purposes. But given
the time and effort it takes to learn a
language, one might well ask whether the
benefits are always assured.
Bilingual benefits
Speaking a second language opens up a
number of new roles and occupations for
those seeking employment outside their
home country.
“Speaking business-level Japanese greatly
increases your employability as many jobs
and industries focused on the domestic
market are closed to you without it”, said
Kris Kullengren, academic director at
Education First Japan K.K.
But the benefits can go beyond greater
compensation and wider job opportunities
for employees. They can offer something for
firms, too.
Understanding a second language is also a

is considered complex, highly nuanced and
difficult to understand without knowledge of
the language. That familiarity, in turn, can
lead to greater adaptability, and on a
cognitive level, bilingual abilities also lend
themselves to a different and more flexible
approach to work.
“Bilingual staff tend to approach problems
in a more creative and flexible way than
people who only speak one language”,
Kullengren explained. “This is most likely
related to having a wider range of
experiences to draw from and having
spoken with people from very different
backgrounds and outlooks on life”.
According to an article by Swiss non-profit
foundation the World Economic Forum, a
study involving bilingual and monolingual
children showed that those with bilingual
skills had an increased ability to switch
between tasks and empathise with different
people. And a Princeton University study
published in August indicated that bilingual
infants enjoyed cognitive benefits
throughout their life.
Business needs
The increasingly online and tech-orientated
business environment is another aspect to
consider when it comes to the benefits of
being bilingual. In this regard, Kullengren
argues that English in particular has
unrivalled importance.
“Your customer base is now not limited
to geography, and I would put forward the
fact that more than 50% of all content on the
Internet is in English”, he said. “With a

“I have seen many people fail in their roles
when their employers have realised, after
some time, that the candidate only had
bilingual skills, and the other skills needed
were not present”, he said.
It is a point Kullengren echoed.

experience, based heavily on performance”.

PART C: COMMENT ON TRANSLATION
1. Genre of texts:
The articles discuss the roles and benefits of bilingualism, giving examples
of successful people in the world in order to show the benefits of bilingualism for
children and everybody in general.
2. The difficulties and convenience met during thetranslation
During the translating process, many problem could arise, such as grammar,
culture aspect, the length of the sentences and the qualification of the translator.
Grammar and vocabulary:
In the basic structure of English, a verb comes after the subject and stands in
front of other factors such as object, adjective, adverb. But it is different in Vietnamese,
there are many cases where factors other than verb directly come after the subject. For
example, comparing 2 sentences with the same meaning in English and Vietnamese:
She is pretty - Cô ấy đẹp.
We can see: English structure : S (She)+ tobe(is) + Adj (pretty)
Vietnamese structure : S (Cô ấy) + Adj (đẹp)
In addition, English has complicated verb tenses and has to be used precisely in order to
clearly express one’s idea
Culture aspect:
In the famous work And the mountain Echoed, Afgannistan-American pharmacist Khaled
Hossein wrote, "If culture was a house, than language was the key to the front door, to all
the room inside." This shows language and culture as a close relationship and English and
Vietnamese is no exception. These two languages reflects two different culture. In order
to translate well and correctly, a translator needs must understand the culture of each
nation. There are idioms in Vietnamese that cannot be literally translated but instead
should be explained clearly to avoid confusion.
Good translation will help you understand more about the life and culture of the
countries that use the language and has many benefits for the brain such as increasing

memory, while also help you seize many opportunities in work and in life
PART D: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
During the process of officially translating four articles from English into
Vietnamese and Vietnamese into English and practicing at KBI Cosmolink Vina
Cable Company, I learned a lot of practical experience and apply well the
knowledge and methods of translation learned in the translation.
I’ve come to realize the importance of bilingualism. Asides from your
mother tongue, everyone should try to learn another language if they have the
ability and opportunity to do so. Knowing multiple languages can improve your
knowledge. An example is in the company I did my internship, asides from
English being used in everyday life and work, some people can speak Korean,
which is very convenient when they need to communicate with Korean clients.
In the translating process, I feel that no matter what method is used, we still
need to study and practice everyday. Each person must develop their own
method that suits their ability to learn and translate better.
The nature of translators is highly academic and specialized, so every
student should also have a good attitude and be willing to cooperate with
lecturers to be able to study well.
Finally, this is my first complete translation , there are many limitations in
terms of time, level as well as tools and documents so mistakes are inevitable, I
hope to receive comments and suggestions from teachers and friends to improve
in the future.
